We’ve all heard of Oscar Wilde, William Shakespeare and Anton Chekhov. Closer to home, local drama group, Remarkable Theatre’s Pint-Sized Plays competition has unearthed several talented local playwrights. The PintSized Play idea started in Wales in 2007. The project aimed to introduce new plays and playwrights to a wider audience in a non-traditional theatre environment. It has since become one of the world’s leading international short playwriting competitions. In 2013, Remarkable Theatre committee member David Cantwell, suggested that the group run a New Zealand version of Pint-Sized Plays and the competition was launched. Playwrights are restricted to a play of up to 10 minutes in duration, with up to three actors. Only minimal use of props and costumes is allowed, all of which could be easily assembled in a pub environment. The audience votes for their favourite play and the names of the authors are not revealed until votes are cast. The inaugural winner of ‘’Pint-Sized Plays New Zealand” in 2013 was Dinosaur, written by local actor, writer and comedian Mike Legge and was performed by Mike Legge, Jo Blick and Fiona Stephenson and told the tale of one middle-aged man’s struggle against technology. The audience loved it. Second place went to David Cantwell’s Howzat? with third place going to The Visionaries, by Barbara Glass. Since this time, over 300 plays have been submitted for consideration in Pint-Sized Plays New Zealand with over 50 plays selected for performance including those by current and former locals Phena Byrne and Myles Lind. The shows have involved over 100 actors and numerous backstage crew. It has been an ideal opportunity for first time writers, directors and actors to try their luck alongside old hands. In line with the concept of taking live theatre to a wider audience PintSized Plays have been performed in various venues in Queenstown, Arrowtown and Wanaka. This year the Remarkable Theatre crew will be joined by students from the Wakatipu High School’s performing arts course who will provide technical support under the supervision of drama teacher, Jake Hansen. After a hiatus in 2018, Pint-Sized Plays NZ will return to Queenstown and Wanaka on the first weekend of May with shows at The Sherwood (3 May), Gin and Raspberry (4 May) in Wanaka and at Clancy’s Bar in the Rydges Hotel, (4 May). Tickets are available at Eventfinda.com, with limited numbers on the door. While comedy has always been a staple of Pint-Sized Plays this year’s selection is a mix of comedy, drama and mystery. Come along and support local theatre. Maybe you’ll even be inspired to write your own masterpiece to rival the works of Oscar, William and Anton.

Arrowtown-based Kate Campbell is leading the research initiative. “QLDC wants to determine whether those generating an income from outside the district are satisfied with their status quo and whether they are keen to explore opportunities to have a stronger local connection.” Campbell has interviewed dozens of residents from across the district including remote workers, directors, investors, and freelancers who call the Queenstown Lakes District home. Countless more have answered the online survey. “It has been fascinating to find such a wide range of professionals living here who are making an impact around the globe,” she said. “Early results indicate there are many ways the QLDC Economic Development team could look to engage with these individuals who want to have stronger ties to the place they call home.” For QLDC’s Economic Development Manager Peter Harris, diversifying and building more resilience in an economy is at the core of his team’s work. “We know there is a significant percentage of our economy made up of remote income earners. For those looking for change we are keen to know what this would look like for them,” he said. “Ideally it will become clear what is holding these individuals back from making the change, what support they would benefit from, and how QLDC can assist in facilitating that,” Harris said. For local startup and innovation ecosystem organizer, Startup Queenstown Lakes, this study could lead to more recommendations that help to prompt new business in the community noted local leader James Burnes. “There is an incredible amount of talent based here that could be more locally active in creating companies and jobs,” said Burnes. “For individuals who are finding success outside the district, we want to help pave the way for them to get involved with existing startups or pursue an ancillary idea that leverages their current expertise to start something new,” said Burnes.

Council Referendum
I W The way the council are wording the upcoming
referendum so far makes you think it will just be coming from the pockets of the tourists, think about how it will get from the tourists pocket to the council, if it is collected by a government agency, will they take a fee? Also what happens when the occupancy levels in commercial accommodation providers drop like they have been over the past 18 months, will there be a new levy on top of the accommodation, on top of 15% tax everyone already pays and the new $35 arrival tax at airports. It will only be on commercial accommodation in QLDC area (including peer to peer, so look out all the Air BnB’s) so people will choose to stay in Cromwell and not pay the fee but still use our facilities during the daytime and hopefully still partake in activities but will they still eat and drink here or choose to dine in Cromwell, closer to their beds and save the late night drive through the gorge. What will Wanaka, Kinloch, Glenorchy & Kingston gain from this levy, except extra work to collect the levy? They won’t benefit from our new water scheme, sewer system upgrade and why should they pay when they aren’t getting
anything in return except a downturn in their businesses? A smaller percentage on a broader group (especially as accommodation is third on the tourist spend list and only a small 14%) may actually be able to decrease local housing rates. An easy way to make certain locals aren’t targeted is to have a locals card. Most people either carry loyalty cards or a phone on them, apps allow you to scan your membership cards, the same could be done on a proven locals card. Smaller percentage across the board would be less likely to turn visitors away. The Council needs to be transparent with their proposal, leaving it to the last minute to say how the actual referendum will be worded makes you wonder... how do they expect people to have an informed decision or is this their tactic? Just keep telling the masses that it will be the tourist that pays, Wake up!!! Less people in hostel and backpackers mean less working force for restaurants, retail, activity providers and the list goes on. Get educated before you make your vote. Anon.
Cinema Con Queues! Queues! Queues! I recently went to watch the newest Avengers in the local cinema and had to queue up an hour and half before the show started to be the second in line!!! Someone had beat me by 10 mins. As a selfconfessed movie buff, every time a blockbuster is released I sacrifice at least an hour of my time queuing up to get decent seats. Queenstown is not a small town anymore and with the population growing, why can’t the cinema follow the example of other major cinemas around the country and invest into making pre-assigned seating a reality? Imagine so many people just standing in the queue wasting all that
time away!! With so many shift workers on an hourly wage, why can’t we have the privilege of watching these blockbusters on the first day at a time convenient to us without having to worry about being on the early/right shift because we have to queue up or worse; having to watch on our days off and risk spoilers! In this day an age of technology, is it too much to ask for the convenience of booking my seats in advance so I am not stressed and hassled but instead relaxed so I can actually focus on the main goal of enjoying my movie? ‘nuff said. So it’s either charge extra or not open at all it seems. Also the ones that do not charge extra are from big overseas chains like Starbucks and McDonald’s as they can afford that and local businesses probably can’t. And there is always a rant about supporting our local businesses but when we have to pay extra for them to be open there goes the rage against the 15%... As you say no other industry charges extra on public holidays but some restaurants and bars get away with it. People should vote with their feet and refuse to go to places with a surcharge. I’ve stopped doing it now but years ago I used to love walking into places with a group of friends then as soon as we saw the surcharge sign would make a comment to the staff that we were walking out because of it and leave. Support the bars and restaurants who don’t have a surcharge - bar and restaurant owners should easily recoup the extra staff wage cost with larger overall turnover. Why they’re making a quiet comeback is something the owners of Queenstown’s only independent bookshop, Bound Books and Records on Church Street, know all about. When the bookshop’s owners, Jade Becker and Ollie Bombard, moved to Queenstown from Australia, an incident with a shipping container helped them notice the gap in the market: “When we first moved here, we were told it would take 10 days for our stuff to be shipped over, what they actually meant was 10 days from when the entire container was full and was being sent to Queenstown… it didn’t arrive until three and a half months later,” says Jade.

“All we had was a couch, a bed, a dining room table and not much else. It was cold and we didn’t have any friends yet. We had no TV and were waiting to get fibre internet put in. We were so used to all of Sydney’s amazing bookshops and we read through Whitcoulls’ selection so fast – we ran out of books and realised that if cities can support multiple independent bookshops, then somewhere like Queenstown could use one.” They opted to sell new books only, to ensure they weren’t in competition with the much-loved second hand bookshop, Black Cat Books in O’Connell’s. The pair had little support at first from distributors, many of whom seemed to presume that Queenstown would not be interested in an independent bookshop.

The former stripper wrote the poems through tough times and good times, culminating in a collection that’s raw and bold. It’s a tear-jerker, but also funny – whatever your background, you’re likely to find a myriad of common feelings which Hadassah expresses plainly and poetically.
“Most distributors had us on cash accounts at first, only a few were with us right from the start. After about a year, more reps started to visit and now, four and a half years later, we’ve got access to all sorts of publishers and books. “It was nerve-wracking at first, designing and choosing all of the books. When we first opened, it was a bit like ‘welcome to my brain’, it was just all the books we liked, but now it’s more a reflection of the community as well as interesting things from the reps.” Jade reckons the global rise in independent bookshops is in part due to this ‘discovery’ element – online book shops push the most popular books automatically so we’re less likely to stumble across a new genre or develop a new reading habit. Research has shown we have short attention spans when reading on a screen – we’re more likely to flick from article to article than to get lost in a longer narrative. “Indie is on the rise again because it’s more personal – the big chains offer the same, top-100-in-US titles; Amazon is done by recommendation of books similar to what you’ve already read. At an indie bookshop, by browsing or talking to others in the shop, you discover new things. The best compliment we’ve ever had is from one of our regulars who told us she’d totally changed her reading habits and had started to enjoy reading so much more. That’s the biggest compliment for us, it makes me so happy.”

Rating: That was a waste of time. I talked during the performance.
Who: Norah Jones Where: Regent Theatre, Dunedin When: Friday 26th April Reviewer: Ch’i Bangs ‘Broken Little Hearts’ Norah Jones’s 5th solo album, converted me to an unwavering fan. She proved to be much more than her droozy hit ‘Come away with me’ which propelled her into fame, even scored her five Grammys! Her ‘Features’ album is a good representation of the variety of songs and artists she can pair her velvety voice to, like QTip! ‘Life is.... better... now that... now that I found you’ She’s a very adaptable musician, so, I didn’t know quite what to expect when the chance came to see her live. All I knew is that I far preferred the romantic theatre in Dunedin than the stink stage in Queenstown. The Regent Theatre was all glamour! Marble stairs, staff in suits, low lit and super comfy. On the stage teased a cello, side guitar, acoustic guitar, organ, a nerdy leslie keyboard ampiflier, drums, bass and grand piano. 8.30 sharp, she walks out in a silky lacy dress, her hair wild with volume. She sits down at the piano and starts playing, her long fingers effortlessly dancing on the ivory – she’s skilled on the keys and stays there, bouncing on the seat most of the night. The audience stooped into recline, some pulling out chocolate
It was mmmk. Totally worth it. A gig to remember! treats as Norah seduced the atmosphere with a warm husky hum. She didn’t say much but you got a sense of her lovely nature, at the end of each song she turned to the crowd and smiled. She grabs a guitar and breaks into ‘Sunriseee, sunriseee, looks like morning in your eyeees’ ... ‘Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh’ the song is still stuck in my head! She sang it beautifully. There were definitely moments of lag, ‘Black’ from the Danger Mouse album ‘Rome’ was a little unpolished and some of that country stuff gets boring for me. I enjoy Norah’s more, experimental stuff. The bass changed tempo, the drummer pats the kit like a sloth, Jones delved into ‘Begin Again’ off her new 2019 album. If I caught the Queenstown show, it would’ve been a completely different set. She’s got so much music, in all styles! Any given night you don’t know where she’ll take it, she’s an artist that’ll stand the test of time and although she didn’t perform much off ‘Broken Little Hearts’ that honey tone will always leave me happy and full.
