Thursday was an historic day for our district. You may have heard that Council announced it is holding a non-binding district-wide referendum, the first step in delivering a local visitor levy. And it literally was the first step. It takes 90 days to hold an independent referendum and it will take a referendum for Government to consider a law change. We are now finalising the detail because the next critical step is honing how it will work. What’s great is the incredible support this announcement has engendered. Thanks to all who have been in touch. We’ll all get our chance to have a vote on this (voting forms will go out mid-May and close the first week of June), and my hope is we do so being absolutely clear about what’s on the table. When we land on the model and all the machinations of how it will work, you will be the first to know. It’s critical we give our communities ample opportunity to get informed. If the community supports the levy, Central Government has undertaken to consider the law changes that will mean that the three million people who visit the district each year will contribute. They will pay a small but fair contribution to the enormous cost of roads, water supply, wastewater systems, parks and reserves and other infrastructure an enjoyable visit here relies on. This levy would be unique to our district, given the distinct challenges we face as the number one tourism destination in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our ratio of 1:34 residents to international visitors is one of the highest in the world and the burden on the district’s ratepayers to keep up with the investment required to facilitate them, is impossible to carry for 24,000 ratepayers. We are a relatively small population but our importance to the national economy is immense. Tourism employs around ten percent of the country’s workforce. Visitors, are sold on this country by images of the Queenstown Lakes. ‘That’ Wanaka tree, our adventure tourism offering, our fine dining and wine, our pristine wilderness and spectacular alpine environment – Google New Zealand and that’s what you see. After lobbying (two) governments since my election in 2016, it’s a huge relief to have gained the recognition that our district’s challenges are unique, and that a commitment to investment here is vital for a sustainable tourism industry. What we are not asking for is a handout. We have submitted a strong case for a funding model that supports infrastructure investment without further burdening our residents and rate payers, many of whom already face higher costs of living than other kiwis. Quite simply, we can’t do this without your support. Thanks very much to everyone who has reached out to say you’re behind it one hundred percent. I strongly encourage all residents and ratepayers to get involved and be part of this historic solution.

Sharing House With A Lazy Bastard
We all know that rent in Queenstown is expensive and this is one of the reasons why most people share the house with flatmates. Here is when the problem starts. We may get to know some bad habits coming from people. I know that this town is multicultural and each person is unique, but some basics about living with other people and sharing a house are expected. Do I need to say to grown man around 30 that he needs to stop peeing all around and on the toilet seat? Or that he needs to check after flushing if everything is really gone? Should I say that after cooking he needs to wash his dishes and wipe the kitchen counter? Do I
need to explain that some vacuuming is also necessary? Bills like buying toilet paper and cleaning products are also expected someone to contribute. Do I need to remind him that he is not living with his parents anymore, and now he got responsibilities? We all work hard all day long and like to rest whenever we get home, but people need to understand that your flatmate is not your personal housekeeper or baby sitter to clean up your shit! Being respectful with people you live is mandatory, please don’t be a lazy bastard.

Big Friggin’ Fail My whinge is simple. We try to live in a plastic free/sustainable world, but when given the chance to live a ‘sustainable life’ by taking your own container to a ‘take away’ establishment they deny you of a discount.
I would say the person could have been new but having been to Big Fig almost weekly since it opened, I know she has been there since day one – and not to mention, never a smile on her face.
Three of my colleagues in that same day received a ‘gold star’ discount for BYO’ing their container but when I specifically asked, she said no, they don’t offer a discount and then charged me $18 for a small meal.
It may sound petty, but we try to be good saving the environment, saving them money on containers and ourselves a penny in our pocket – but being inconsistent with a great scheme that works elsewhere in town is quite poor.

Cancer is a rubbish Christmas Present by Miranda Spary
I got a pretty rubbish present last Christmas. I got out of the shower and saw a big, red blotch on my boob. Did you know breast cancer isn’t always a lump? I didn’t. I looked up my symptoms online (which was a bad idea) and read that I had a 4% chance of survival. I thought it was going to be my last Christmas and I wanted my family and friends to think lovely things about me once I died so I was super nice, and didn’t even snipe at my husband. (That nearly killed me!) I’m just not the sort of person to get cancer, or so I thought – I am reasonably fit and healthy and eat well, don’t drink too much, don’t smoke. But cancer is very democratic. It likes to spread itself around all ages, shapes, sizes and some people get chosen more than once. Women between 50 and 70 have a 1 in 8 chance of getting breast cancer and by the time we’re 90, we nearly all die with cancer (not of it). It all sounds very scary until you enter the cancer world. Cancer specialists have a tough job and they don’t mince words, but it is very soothing to have all the facts. One look at my blotchy boob and my specialist said it looked like inflammatory breast cancer. She did some tests and a detailed confirmation came back. I felt like a proud mother with a child’s good school report when I was told mine was ‘triple A positive’ which means it responds to all the big drugs. The public health service in New Zealand is fantastic – it gets a lot of bad press, but we are SO lucky. I’m halfway through my chemo and have done an extensive tour of private and public chemo wards in the South Island. The staff at all of them have been equally fabulous – funny and kind and so caring. In Queenstown, we don’t have a cancer treatment facility but we do have the Cancer Society who provide massive support to anyone who wants it. How they manage to do all they do on their tiny budget, I just can’t imagine. Locally they make home visits – these cheery Cancer Society people turn up armed with things you didn’t even know you needed like silky doughnut cushions for after a mastectomy and cosy handmade patchwork quilts donated by the quilting society. They answer all your questions and can organise transport to and from the hospitals, plus much, much more. At the governmental level, they lobby for all the brilliant (and very expensive) new drugs to be funded for all New Zealanders needing them – not like other countries where only the rich can have them. Please come along to the Relay for Life at Lake Hayes Pavillion on 16th March and support the Cancer Society. You or someone you love may well need their help sometime.

“We put it outside and loads of people loved it and stopped to take images of it so we thought we’d get some more going,” says Paul. The decorated hives will be sold to raise money to promote the bee population, with some funds going towards the Tasman district’s Wasp Wipe Out scheme – wasps are an introduced species which are detrimental to the South Island’s bee population. Paul’s hoping to have the hives ready in time for the Arrowtown Autumn Festival, where they’ll be put on display before being sold. “We’ve had a great response, there’s eight artists with all different styles from all around the region painting the hives. The response has been awesome,” he says. “Some will be art pieces, some will be working hives. We’ve paid for all of the materials, but it’s up to the artists what they’d like to do with them. Some will be used for a school programme and the others we’ll try to get somewhere where the public can see them. […] They’ll be 3D public art that raises awareness about bees and the different roles they play – there will be information on them, a bit of education as well as being art.” Paul is also hoping that the hives will raise more awareness and encourage the burgeoning interest in bees across the region. Melbourne Artist Transforms Abandoned Mansion Melbourne-based artist Rone has transformed an abandoned mansion with a series of dramatic art installations. Rone is best known for his stylised paintings of women on walls around the world. His latest exhibition, EMPIRE, takes his street art indoors. Rone has emblazoned his muses on the internal walls of an abandoned and decaying 1930s mansion in Melbourne’s Dandenong Ranges. The exhibition combines art, vision, light, sound, AR and VR to create an immersive and haunting multi-sensory experience. Art lovers have until 22nd March to visit the mansion and experience Rone’s creation before it is dismantled and returned to its former state of disrepair. This weekend at Lake Hayes Pavilion, Relay for Life is coming to Queenstown for the first time. The most beautiful venue in New Zealand will come to life! Over 450 people will camp out overnight and walk relay style around a track for 24 hours from 12 noon on Saturday to 12 noon on Sunday. There will be a festival atmosphere with a back-to-back line up of live entertainment and activities for everyone to enjoy. We have felt so proud of the way Queenstown has already come together for this cause, and have been blown away by the generosity of everyone supporting this event, including local businesses and the many teams who have registered. To date, participants have already raised over $50,000! These funds will help the Cancer Society continue to provide personalised support and care for those affected by cancer in our region, support health promotion to reduce the risk of cancer (like SunSmart programmes in schools), fund vital research and keep Daffodil House operating (a home away from home for people travelling to Dunedin for treatment). If you’d like to join a team get in touch, but even if you’re not in a team, you can be a part of what will be a very special community event. Drug Testing Technician Queenstown/Central Otago The Drug Detection Agency (TDDA) is the largest provider of workplace drug testing services in New Zealand, performing health and safety focused collection and screening of urine, oral fluid and hair samples from workforce personnel. No formal qualifications are required from applicants as full training and assessment in required NZ standards will be completed before the commencement of work. The required qualification is completed in a four day course run by TDDA held in Auckland 1821 March. The main requirement of this position is the collection of samples to detect the presence of illicit and prescription drugs. The applicant must be honest, reliable and not afraid of hard work and sometimes long hours. The hours change on a daily basis due to testing requirements so we cannot provide a set start or finish time each day - weekly hours vary between 18-30 hours.
