10th Year of Queenstown Garden Shows. Queenstown’s yearly Garden Show, performed by the actors of local community group Remarkable Theatre, roars into action shortly (25–27 January). The format is promenade theatre which comprises several short scenes with the audience ‘promenading’ from one scene to the next, starting at the Band Rotunda and moving mainly around the pond. There’s acting, some singing, some dance moves with a touch of slapstick comedy. Backdropped by the idyllic and serene Gardens, it’s a lovely way to while away an afternoon. Shows are suitable for all ages; children are very welcome and audience members can also bring camping chairs and picnic blankets if they desire. This year’s show is a milestone for Remarkable Theatre as it marks 10 years of Garden shows and is directed by Remarkable Theatre stalwart Melanie Grindell, who has also been involved in many of the shows. We see a pick of some of the best scenes from previous shows which celebrate locally-written sketches, British comedy, pantomime, fairy tales, Shakespeare and local gold-mining. The idea first originated out of former Queenstown Shakespeare’s plays, which were at times set in the Gardens. Kate Blackhurst was one of the initial catalysts with the first Garden Show named ‘Shakespeare on Location’ in 2010, followed by ‘A funny thing happened in the Gardens’ in 2011. ‘Tales of Gold’ about local goldminers was directed by Tiffany Menzies helped by Andrew Edgar in 2012 after which Victoria Keating became a major driving force directing ‘Twisted Tales’ in 2013’, ‘A Jolly Good Stroll in the Gardens’ in 2014 and ‘Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits’ in 2016. Previously, Lisa Clough had directed Cinderella in 2015. Deborah Lind then directed ‘Oh No, it isn’t’ in 2017 and ‘Local Writes’ was produced by Tanya Surrey last year. The Remarkable Theatre committee members are always very involved in helping to bring the shows to fruition and a huge thanks goes out to all those that have been involved both ‘on’ and ‘back’ stage over the years. We also need to acknowledge the support of the local council and community groups, without whose help we wouldn’t be able to provide these shows for the public.

For those interested in getting involved in local community theatre, the Garden Show is an excellent way in, as there are various small and larger roles. We usually have a large cast of 20-30 actors, as well as many people helping backstage. It’s also a great place to ‘hone’ your acting skills as so many unexpected things can happen in live outdoor theatre (a ‘waddle’ of ducklings are always a scene stealer!) If you want to get involved in any of our shows, both Remarkable Theatre and Showbiz Queenstown are also hosting courses and workshops for adults and children early this year (get in touch via remarkabletheatre.org.nz to find out more). Salvation From The Greed.
Too much is too much. It is now the third time that I go to one of the Salvation Army shops around town and have the unpleasant surprise of finding higher prices for second hand items than brand new at the shop. At first I thought it was a mistake, the Salvation Army always helped people around since more than a century now and do a great job for everyone. But sadly it seems that the Queenstown greed contaminated until the most honest and helpful business in town. Please Salvation Army, remember that you are not only helping people with the money you
make from your shops but you are also helping people that come to buy items in your shop. We all have a conscience and want the same at the end, helping our community, the planet and our own wallet by buying second hand.

I totally agree with you with regards to the large volume of traffic on the roads at this time of year hence why we contract a professional traffic management company to oversee the safety of all participants and other road users during the event. We also have marshals and signage around the course assisting the traffic management company monitoring the event. It is not so simple to close roads as per your suggestion whilst at the same time there is no need to as all cyclists are not crossing any road - simply taking left marked turns and following normal road rules as all other users do. At the same time, as I’m sure you are fully aware, traffic volumes have increased dramatically over the year’s, however it’s not just this time of year

The Lake Hayes Triathlon is a lot smaller event than others in the area and only on for a small duration of time in comparison to other events that attract thousands of participants and spectators and there is more likelyhood of a someone being shocked or injured walking across a Zebra Crossing in town texting on their phone and someone behind the wheel not acknowledging that they need to Stop to allow walkers to cross! We have never had an incident during the event and hopefully never will, however I do appreciate your comments and concerns and it’s great that you are supportive of events in the area. Nestled between the historical buildings, the Cromwell Farmers and Craft Market gives visitors a glimpse of times gone by. Fresh fare Many Cromwellians use the market as the spot for their weekly shop, and it is not hard to see why. What’s around 35,000 horsepower and has 78 wings? A riddle easily answered by heading through the Kawarau Gorge on Friday or Saturday, February 1/2nd to Central Motor Speedway in Cromwell, featuring the Civil Construction 2019 New Zealand Sprintcar Title. The highlight of the sprintcar national calendar, the Title has attracted some 39 sprintcars for all over the country – each with two wings; a small one between the front wheels and a larger wing over the cockpit and powered by an 850 to 900 horse power high octane methanol-burning V8 motor. There you have it, 78 wings and around 35,000 horsepower! Of course, 39 possibly more, sprintcars, equates to outstanding drivers and crews and plenty of action. There’s even an international driver determined to take the title back to the USA. Buddy Kofoid (just 17) has been winning races in these winged demons from when he was 13. Since arriving in New Zealand late December he has quickly made a name for himself for his blistering pace and wins in Cromwell and also Ruapuna. While, Buddy’s in with a chance, he’s up against tough competition and speedway is a very ruthless mistress. Mark, Feb 1/2 in your calendar, as Central Motor Speedway will be hosting the who’s who of sprintcar racing. On both days, lots of classes will be racing including six-shooters, saloons, super saloons, productions and youth ministocks. For a real family day out, gates open at 4pm, there will be food concessions and plenty of easy parking. A meeting as huge as this would not be possible without sponsorship with special mention of Civil Construction who are supporting the 2019 NZ Sprintcar Title. Civil have built an enviable reputation throughout Central Otago in earthworks, civil works and general contracting. Arts+Culture Remarkable Theatre in the Gardens Remarkable Theatre are celebrating their 10th annual show in the Queenstown Gardens this weekend. From 25th – 27th January, the Gardens will become the stage for some of Remarkable Theatre’s favourite scenes from performances over the years. Director Melanie Grindell promises, “something for everyone; comedy, drama, singing, bright costumes and fairy tales… from Monty Python to scenes from Absolutely Fabulous. “It’s a real smorgasbord,” she says. Remarkable Theatre was established in 2009, out of Queenstown Shakespeare. The community theatre group is a volunteer-run registered charity and performs a colourful range of contemporary plays and old favourites throughout the year. Their aim is to encourage the development of acting and performance skills of people in the Queenstown Lakes District. The troupe includes a mix of seasoned pros and new talent. Melanie has been involved with the group for more than eight years and developed her directing skills through the group’s regular workshops and performances.
Melanie insists that Remarkable Theatre’s Garden Show is not ‘Shakespeare in the Park’ (a popular event held overseas) – the show is a more varied mix that’s made even more entertaining by the unpredictability of performing in an open space. “Kids love to get involved – we once had a kid trying to look into the panto cow costume to see who was in there, mid-performance. There’s usually a few hen and stag dos in the Gardens and they’re joined in before… it’s a very different experience for the actors to not be on stage. “Part of the show is performed in a tent under a large monkey tree, if it’s a hot day, the seed pods crack showering everyone with seeds! “We really enjoy being in the gardens and we’re looking forward to performing our tenth annual show.” The event begins at the Band Rotunda and audience members are invited to follow as the performance roams around the Gardens. The Long Way Home One of New Zealand’s favourite buskers is set to release a brand new album this week. Graeme James’ ‘The Long Way Home’ is the multiinstrumentalist’s first album published with Nettwerk Music Group – it’s set to be a milestone in the former busker’s musical career. Graeme James developed his skills on the streets of Wellington before travelling New Zealand with his folksy interpretations of popular music. His original music is steeped in the story telling and musical traditions of folk music, but with a contemporary twist. Utilising a loop pedal, he weaves violin, electric violin, guitar, bass, baritone ukulele, mandolin, harmonica, percussion and beatboxing, live and in real time. He’s the very modern version of a one-man-band. Popular on Queenstown’s streets and bars, Graeme James also featured in an inspirational talk as part of a TEDxQueenstown event in 2015. ‘A Long Way Home’ will be released on Spotify and other digital channels on 25th January.

Plunket wins BIG with MINUS 5º ICE BAR’s 2018 SANTA’S GROTTO Hundreds of families braved the cold in December to help make the 8th Annual Santa's Grotto at Minus 5º ICE BAR a big success for Wakatipu Plunket! Over the three days at the Steamer Wharf over 400 children visited Santa in his ICE wonderland, and from the proceeds of entrance fees and photo sales $2,330 was raised, all of which will be donated to support Wakatipu Plunket services in the Queenstown area. Over 8 years this event has now raised over $14,000.
The event also gave children the chance to win a party in Minus 5º ICE BAR on Steamer Wharf for themselves and up to fifteen friends. The coloring competition winner was Lily Haugh. The funds raised will contribute towards the ongoing running costs of the Plunket rooms, education and support for new parents and a safe environment for young families to meet for peer support and socializing. Congratulations Plunket and thanks Minus 5º ICE BAR / Future Bars Ltd. for organizing and hosting the event. Santa's Grotto will be back again next year.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra were the support act to Fat Freddy’s Drop at the Jon Davis Oval on Monday 14th and fair to say, Fat Freddy’s weren’t the only draw card to get people out on a school night. ‘Unknown Mortal Orchestra’ (UMO) had a mix contingent of psyh rock fans flocking to front of stage. Ruban Nielson (lead singer and guitarist) opened with the first track from the album II “Iiiisoolaatttionnn can put a gun to your head.” His guitar strap placement flaunts that he’s got his own weird style. All in comfort black attire, he looks like a waster but he’s really a genius music insomniac. He enters into the crowd, stopping gossiping Queenstowners in their place! “I wish that I could swim and sleep like a shark does” The line of Wakatipu Highschool leavers up front knew all the words to this one. “Life.. Life… All of my Life.. I found.. Ffunny Ffriends”
It was mmmk. Totally worth it. A gig to remember! I knew all the words to this one. An Aucklander now Portlander, it was Ruban and his brother (Kody Nielson) who started the legendry NZ pop punk band ‘The Mint Chicks’. Although this is Ruban’s own musical journey, it was special to see members of the family had joined him for this gig – Kody on drums and his Dad (in the yellow shade specs), really rocking the synth. “Mullllllllltiiiiiiii lOVe” The titled album track was definitely a crowd pleaser! Tradies in arms, double parked with Speights singing the words of his polyamory relationship from 2015. As dusk disappears and the cold creeps up – UMO tap into new stuff from their 2018 album ‘Sex & Food’ and got the drunk crowd happily bopping to ‘Hunnybee’. I’ll admit, the last time I saw UMO at Tuki Fest I was unimpressed. This time, they were tight and it sounded good. FINALLY, some of the crowd will start to know what they’ve been missing out on.
