The Coalition Government and Immigration Policy in 2018: A pain in the pocket for employers. The formation of the Labour/NZ First coalition was a cause for concern for many employers who feared the new government would be ‘closing the doors’ to overseas workers. Whilst no major policy changes have been introduced, we have seen subtle tweaks to the system which have made it more challenging for employers who rely on migrant labour – both in terms of the direct cost of employing migrant workers and the ease (or lack) of getting work visas. These challenges will be more difficult for those who employ migrant workers in roles at the lower end of the skills spectrum, in sectors such as retail, hospitality and tourism. The subtle movement here by the government is to increase the cost of migrant workers to New Zealand employers, with a hope that this will passively move employers away from reliance on offshore labour and invest in training New Zealanders instead. A similar approach is being taken by the Australian government. Everyone agrees that we should operate a ‘New Zealanders first’ policy, but this only works if there are enough Kiwis available, who are suitably skilled and/ or willing to be trained. There are not enough in both counts in the Southern Lakes region. Since the introduction of the low/mid/highly skilled classification system in August 2017, the minimum pay rates for classifying the skill level of employment have been raised twice, representing a 6% increase.

The required wage for maintaining staff in the mid-skilled classification is now $21.25 per hour (up from $20.65 per hour) and this upward trend will continue. For many employers, staff that are in the mid-skilled classification are employees that have been trained and upskilled over 2-3 years, or have completed their apprenticeships. Therefore, they are important to retain and often difficult to replace. The impact of the skill-level classifications is even greater when combined with the significant increases in visa application fees. The fee for an Essential Skills work visa application is now $495, up a whopping 60%. The impact of this price increase is greater for those applying for a low-skilled Essential Skills visa, which now must be renewed every 12 months. It’s clear that the intention is to encourage employers to make considered decisions before employing a migrant worker in to both low and mid-skilled roles (many of which are entry level or ‘second job’ positions). In addition, putting pressure on employers to increase hourly rates to make it more attractive (possible) for Kiwis to work in the region fits with their agenda too. This is especially relevant for the Southern Lakes region where 60% of workers are on a visa. This outcome is being driven largely by these changes hitting employers where it hurts most: in the pocket.

I was out shopping in Arrowtown on the weekend and it was brought to my attention that in a couple of shops, their sizing was… well, it was minimal. 6’s, 8’s and 10’s! It made me think, are they only stocking these sizes to “attract” a certain crowd? Or was it that all the curvy girls just beat me too it? As I looked around, I could tell it was the former, which is upsetting. We live in 2018 - a modern day where we should be allowed to shop wherever we want, and not be judged. Marilyn Monroe, after all was a size 14-16 and she rocked it. She was not judged and she was a fashion icon for her
era – why change that? Why make curvy and proud women feel lesser than they should? Needless to say, I won’t be making my way back in a rush. I support shopping local – but only if that shop supports woman (and men of course) of any gender, race or size! Empowered women, empower women – set a good example for our future, lead by example and stock a size that fits all.

Day here. But why are we following suit, when Thanksgiving has no meaning to us what so ever??
I love a good sale as much as the next person, but it seems very strange that Kiwi businesses far and wide are all partaking in a very American sales day.
It seems business here will try anything just to get us through the door. Even if it’s a random sales day at the end of November.
Black Friday follows Thanksgiving, something which is not celebrated here in New Zealand, it’s a massive shopping day much like Boxing

Outdoor Nation As New Zealanders we are proud of our country and are a very active nation. Almost everybody is into something active and what is more impressive is the variety of whats always been available here. What sport are you into? Kayaking, Climbing, Fishing, Sailing, Hiking, Mountaineering, Skiing, Snowboarding, Mountainbiking, Paddleboarding, Paragliding, Surfing, Ski touring, Team sports: Soccer, RUGBY. At what point is Health and Safety going to stop us from getting out and enjoying our backyard (Aotearoa)? Queenstown was built on adventure not because of anything but the mountains, lakes and rivers we love so much. So, when health and safety shut’s the door on these resources for recreational users, these resources which are worth more than any business in New Zealand, it’s a sad day every time. I would like to ask where the support for the active kiwi is? The active kiwi that wants to get out and enjoy the
sport he’s always done in the place he always did it, before the gate was shut by H&S. From my experience the time and effort that people are forced to put in to keeping access to our backyard is exhausting and wasteful. If it’s crossing a paddock to get to your favourite fishing hole. Going Rock climbing within DOC Leased land, ski touring on a station or DOC lease, practicing soccer in the neighbour’s empty section, driving up an access road to go paragliding or getting to your favourite surf spot. If you are a member of a club or enjoy a sport without being a member stop and think about how much it takes to keep recreational activity happening in NZ. Don’t ignore their efforts and pitch in everywhere you can because it will take everyone and everything to keep our country open to be enjoyed.

Making Dollars Not Sense! - 678 QLDC, What a truly (and typically) pathetic response. You have offered no solution, essentially, if there is no parking available, these businesses do not get serviced. If they don’t get serviced, they don’t operate as a business. I’m sure even the local council understands where the rest of this goes... myself and my colleagues, along with other drivers I have spoken to around town, are so frustrated that instead of allowing us to do our jobs, you have made almost impossible. If you think I’m paying $60 for the privilege of making money for my company, you are very much mistaken. The loading zone at the bottom end of Cow Lane is not feasible when you think we have to hum stuff back up the hill to make any delivery. But don’t worry, this loading zone is usually taken up by local drivers, tourist rental cars and tradie vans who park there all day. Your parking attendants do NOTHING about them and walk on past. So you ticket the people trying to do their jobs, but walk on by the people forcing us to park illegally?! It sounds like this “masterplan” of yours is a long way off, as you haven’t even mentioned a completion date yet, let alone the actual date of when anything comes into force because let face it, it will be a long time delayed like any other one of your current projects again. So what will you do about the good people of Queenstown trying to do their jobs and supplying all kinds of goods and services to the businesses of Queenstown and getting fined for it? We will keep asking these questions until you ACTUALLY respond with a proper answer.

Arts+Culture The Perfect Match Lynda says that though they work in different artistic disciplines, they’re both “grunty, original creators” with a similar style and approach. “We both love to design pieces that are unique, beautiful and out-of-theordinary. Jane is a very modest person, she creates incredible designs that are high fashion with the wow factor, but very wearable. They’re Gothic and timeless – the kind of item you’d enjoy wearing for a very long time. “I think my art is timeless too and I also have Gothic influences. Most recently, I’ve been working on a moth series, inspired by my recent travels in Croatia and Bosnia, in Sarajevo and Montenegro. The walls there were fascinating – they had many layers and some were riddled with bullet holes telling stories of what has happened there. For me, the moth represents a new beginning, a new life, so that’s what my latest series is about.” Two prominent local artists will exhibit their work together in a special exhibition, hosted by The Ivy Box art gallery. Designer Jane Sutherland is exhibiting her new, limited edition fashion alongside the work of artist Lynda Hensman. Blessed Be the Sequel Novelist Margaret Atwood last week announced a sequel to her best-selling dystopian fiction, The Handmaid’s Tale. The tale was first published in 1985 and is set in Gilead, a theonomic military dictatorship in part of what was once the USA. The story is narrated by Offred, who, in a series of recorded tapes, describes her life as a handmaid who is forced to ‘breed’ and perform domestic duties for her master. The new book, The Testaments, is set 15 years after Offred’s final scene, the moment when she’s forced into a van and driven off to an uncertain future. Since the election of Donald Trump as US President, the fictional handmaids have become a symbol of women’s rights, standing against misogyny. A 2017 television series produced by Hulu has also boosted the original book’s popularity and tongues had been wagging about an impending sequel. Talking about the new book, Margaret Atwood said, “Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.” The Testaments will be published worldwide on 10 September 2019.

Huge Saloon Finale at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway Plus V8 Modifieds Opportunities to pit talent and skills against challenging competitors is key to improvement in any sport. Generally this results in more participants getting involved and increased gate takings through revitalised spectator interest and support. Speedway is no exception, as will be fast and furiously demonstrated at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway on Saturday, Dec 8 with the finale of the Holden Trade Club Saloon Speedweek presented by Valvoline. The series began in the 2002-3 season to increase driver and spectator interest in the saloon class through evening the gap between the two islands. From only a few class compliant saloons when the series started, there are now some 40 in the South Island alone with driver skills between the islands pretty much equal, as it should be with a national class. Although this is the first time in quite a few seasons the one week-six meeting series has played out in the South Island, organiser Steve Williams suggested the future format will be two consecutive seasons in the South and two in the North. From 36 applicants, the final number was whittled down to 24 with eight from the North and 16 from the South, including Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway drivers Ivan Murdoch(7t), Phil Burgess(15t), Graham Williamson(21t) and Barry Taylor(28t). This order reverses when the series is in the North Island. According to Steve, the selection criteria has nothing to do with performance but reliability, good presentation, the ability to get on with fellow competitors and teams and a commitment to put on a great show. Like so many speedway classes, saloons are thoroughbred race cars. Hidden by the lightweight fibreglass body panels replicating such American muscle cars as Corvettes, Mustangs, Trans-Ams and Camaros is a highly sophisticated space frame chassis. Up front a carburetted, petrol fuelled V8 motor churns out around 400hp. One small mistake and they’ll roll along the dirt like tumbleweed As if the prospect of being trackside at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway in Sandflat Road, Cromwell from 6pm (gate 4pm) on Saturday, December 8, for the finale of the Holden Trade Club Saloon Speedweek presented by Valvoline isn’t enough, club promoter Jason Scott has pulled another huge one out of the hat with an invasion of some nine top performing V8 Modifieds – across between a saloon and a sprintcar. Saturday’s racing will be the first round of the 2018-19 Mainland Modifieds Series. These winged beasts were introduced to New Zealand in the 1970s and despite competition from sprintcars are considered to have held their own. One small mistake and they can roll along the dirt like metal tumbleweed.

SIT offers a short course in barista training and coffee appreciation at our Queenstown campus. Our current tutor is leaving town so we are looking for an experienced barista whom could continue teaching the successful course and share their skills with learners and new people to the industry.
