some effort on my part and I’ve found myself skinning up Coronet Peak or The Remarkables in May connecting small patches of snow or dodging mud on the way down.

But, every time I’ve doubted the reasons for going up, I’ve enjoyed skiing back down.

I don’t know if skiing will be your thing, but Queenstown has so much more to offer everyone who visits here.

“You’re back! I guess that means its winter.” I’ve heard Perhaps the best thing it can offer is a community of that a lot these last twelve years. Going back and forth good people from all around the world. Twelve years from Queenstown to Colorado I’m now on my 24th winter in a row, and although I’m not very tan, I have met at Browns means I have probably worked with close to 200 different people over the years. Some were only quite a few good friends along the way. I first came to here for a season. Some came back for several. I’ve Queenstown in 2006, back before the World Bar burnt seen some of my ski shop buddies get married, buy a down and both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables had house and start a family here. And that is what is great their old sweaty base buildings. To say that town has changed a lot might be an understatement, but one thing about Queenstown. You can make what you want of it.

I came for one winter, 12 years ago, and I come back for has always been true of Queenstown: wherever you’ve come from, you’ve picked a place that is exciting, fun, fast the skiing still, but the skiing is just a small part. It’s the paced, busy, international, young, historic, and beautiful. town, it’s the people, its home.

This June will be my 127th consecutive month of skiing, not having missed a month since I stayed home for Thanksgiving in 2006. I grew up skiing in Michigan, on ski fields smaller and icier than here, but it wasn’t until after university and moving to Steamboat Springs in Colorado that I really fell in love with skiing. FINDING A ROOM/BED

Be VERY aware that there is a short term and long term housing crisis in Queenstown at the moment. ‘Hot-bedding (12 hour shifts for bed use)’ is an actual thing, so planning and researching options and securing accommodation before you get here is a really good idea - a google search of ‘homeless shelters in Queenstown’ returns no results and Queenstown doesn’t have a high tolerance for ‘freedom campers’.

Finding a job in Queenstown The very beginning of your job search starts with a work visa – if you don’t have one of these in New Zealand then you are not employable. Secondly, you’ll need an IRD number (ird. govt.nz) and a New Zealand bank account. If you’re missing these then your employer legally can’t pay you. GETTING AROUND

Although Queenstown Central is about 5km squared you’ll want to be able to go on journeys to Lake Hayes, Arrowtown or Frankton then you’ll need to know how to mobilise yourself.

Keep in mind that at the moment Queenstown is literally bursting at the seams in terms of infrastructure so plan ahead when driving and check the Queenstown app for traffic updates.

Did you know that local Taxi companies have local rates?

You can get it either by asking sweetly for local’s rates, by obtaining a loyalty card from a driver or by dropping not so subtle hints that you live and work here.

The bus company offers unlimited weekly bus rides for $45 a week. Taxi companies offer local rates – you’ll need to secure a locals card from one their drivers.

Lots of people will buy a cheap car at the beginning of the season and then sell it to a summer traveller at the end of the season.

TIPS

New Zealand is one of the only countries in the world where it is still acceptable to hitch-hike. This doesn’t mean that hitchhiking is without risk – you still have keep your wits about you.

RAINY DAY ACTIVITIES

Even those who have come to ski will find that there are days when the weather doesn’t permit it. As unfortunate as this is, it will give you the opportunity to sample some of Queenstown’s indoor activities, especially good if you’re travelling with children or, are in fact an over grown child yourself. These include Darkride, the 12D motion cinema. Game Over where you can go kart and play laser tag and my personal favorite “Escape Quest” best enjoyed if you like to problem solve. You could also venture to the “Fear Factory”, the anxiety inducing haunted house. Personally I find life scary enough but it is a well known, inexpensive and fun way to spend a rainy day.

If you’re an avid thrill seeker you can also Sky Dive, Paraglide, bungy or do the famous Nevis swing every day of the year. Or you could stick to the ultimate rainy day activity and head

to the good old fashioned movies, best enjoyed with copious amounts of junk food and a cute date.

If you’re too broke to spend any money at all but still feeling bored then why not head to Searle Lane where you can play pool for free!

If you go between 9 and 10pm you can also buy a pint of quite acceptable beer for 3 dollars.

If you are thinking of heading to the movies then best doing so on a Tuesday when the price is considerably lower. Every penny counts when you’ve got as little pennies as I do.

capped mountains around the Cromwell Basin, quiet roads and valleys and in our calm, crisp days, still great for walking and exploring.

There are too many track options to list where you can gain great views and enjoy a walk – best reference is the website or i-site – but for a few starters try Stewart Town at Bannockburn or the 45th Parallel near Lowburn.

The first is accessed off Felton Road and takes you up through old gold mining tailings past caves and sluiced cliffs. There’s lovely stone ruins and 100 year old still-fruiting trees, plus fabulous views of the vineyards on the homeward loop. It’s an easy hour and dogs are welcome.

Along the left shore of Lake Dunstan the 45th Parallel is marked by a roadside monument. Cross the highway and ascend 400 - plus steps onto a glacial terrace. This serves as a grandstand to vast vistas up and down the valley. The track follows the terrace top then down through a gully, - slippery underfoot –to the

For cyclists too, tracks link to here from Cromwell and continue right to Bannockburn and beyond.

With the late harvests just finishing, stalls have apples and pears as well as nuts, olive oil, saffron and more.

The season’s new wines are still being made but there’s plenty of earlier vintages to try.

Year round activities to enjoy which are unique to this area include a visit to the Cromwell Heritage Precinct, built by volunteers about 27 years ago.

The re-created village oozes schistclad charm from every stone wall.

It’s home to cafes, galleries and craftspeople and has historic displays in most buildings –all free to visit.

There’s also white-knuckle action in the form of jetboating the Kawarau River, tandem hang-gliding, helisightseeing and the famous Highlands Motor Sport Park.
