Editor’s Letter

25 years, lots of love and great weddings

Twenty-five years ago, Lakes Region Bride was born out of a need for a magazine to serve couples in the wedding-planning process. Weddings were a bit different then, and not everyone knew the Lakes Region was a great place to get married. Over the past 25 years, the area has become a sought-after wedding location, and Lakes Region Bride has grown as well. This year we celebrate 25 years of bringing wedding planning ideas and style to brides-to-be; here’s to the next 25 years! For the 2019 issue, we planned a styled shoot at a Wolfeboro location. It took weeks of design planning and we depended upon the wedding professionals involved; as always, they did not disappoint. The upscale country wedding shoot took place in the newly renovated barn setting of the Pickering House Inn in late summer. Our models were a real couple (and scheduled to actually get married a few weeks after the shoot!). With flowers, table design, gowns, makeup, and all details in place, we decided a vintage sports car would be a wonderful, fun addition. A call to Chuck Sutton of Sutton Luxury Limousines provided just the vintage car we wanted. Because the Pickering House Inn is on Main Street in Wolfeboro, the car and happy couple certainly caught the eye of many passersby. Another styled photo shoot found us in the rural and gorgeous setting of Whiteface Hollow in Tamworth during foliage season. Our wedding vendors created all the special touches one could hope to have at a wedding. Again, a real-life engaged couple were our bride and groom models. We have some fun things planned to celebrate Lakes Region Bride’s 25th anniversary year and a wedding contest will be announced at lakesregionbride.com, so be sure to watch for details. As we recall the weddings of the past: from ruffly headpieces and puffed sleeve wedding gowns to a few years of ultra simple gowns to wedding attire heavy with ruffles and the strapless gown era to today’s styles that allow for personalized weddings, each year has brought new colors and fabrics and trends. One thing remains very important: planning. We suggest you start as soon as possible to plan your perfect wedding day. Congratulations and happy wedding planning!

In planning the style for the table, a luxe combination of food, fabric, china, flatware and florals honored the upscale renovations at the Pickering House Inn, yet had an approachable style that couples could envision for themselves in the barn area. The colors played together with rich autumn jewel tones as the root for the flowers, fruit and some of the place settings (glassware, etc). The cake designer’s inspiration was to emulate the beautiful patterned china dinner plate and the blue cut glasses on the table. The combination of flowers and fruit created textural color and perfection.

According to Nicole Ayers, designer at Little Dog Paper Company on Main Street in Meredith, NH, there is a lot going on at her business. “We print most of our work digitally in-house on large printers that can handle the weight of paper we use. Most modern stationery is printed this way. We recently acquired a vintage Kelsey Excelsior letterpress which we will be integrating into our wedding suites as well. Letterpress and foil press are, by far, our favorite ways to print stationery and are also a lost art. We cannot wait to have the letterpress up and running!” Little Dog prints wedding suites on thick, bright white, 110# cover stock. Says Nicole, “We are able to incorporate color into our designs by using a white paper. We are able to use any color that a bride may want as well.”

What are some current wedding trends and ideas at Little Dog? According to Nicole, “Our favorite is mixed media. We love to print digitally and also incorporate letterpress or hot foil press into designs. This process gives the stationery dimension and interest. We also love seeing mixed metals within the same wedding suite. We are able to die cut our designs, which brings a unique aspect to any wedding suite. Garlands and wreaths incorporated into the designs is a modern yet elegant approach to wedding invitations. Another favorite trend we are seeing is printing on clear backgrounds like plastic paper, vellum or even acrylic. It is a different and fresh approach that we think we will continue seeing in years to come.” cont. on pg. 52

A country wedding can be rustic and stylish if the location is right. Whiteface Hollow Farm in South Tamworth offers 25 acres of rolling countryside. The wine vineyard estate also serves as a wedding venue. The barn and farmhouse date to the 1820s and have been completely modernized. When the barn doors are open, guests are treated to wonderful mountain views, especially stunning on a bright autumn day. The long table has an elegant table covering and a fun, classy table runner. Florals in a variety of hues complement the linens. The wedding cake is equally elegant, with fondant draping.

Rustic & Romantic in the Lakes Region

Kayla y PJ

All photos this story by Ron Kolias/ NLighten Photography LAKES REGION BRIDE 35

Engagement date: June 25, 2017 Wedding date: July 7, 2018 Although the couple live out of state, they chose the Lakes Region for their wedding because, as Kayla says, “We love visiting the White Mountains. My family had a vacation house in Campton, NH, so all throughout our relationship, we would go up and spend weekends hiking or at the river. We still go camping in NH and love the views.” Birch Hill Farm in Gilford, NH was suggested by a family friend. Wedding colors were navy blue and burlap. Mary Anne, the owner of Birch Hill Farm, was instrumental in helping the couple plan the wedding. When they saw Birch Hill Farm’s vintage green truck, Kayla and PJ asked if it could be parked front and center for photos. Says Kayla, “I knew I wanted a picture with it at some point! I made sure to tell our photographer so we could guarantee the picture, which he loved as well. My best friend helped make signs to decorate. My biggest thing was to have an unplugged ceremony so that guests were watching us and not just looking at cameras/phones. I wanted our sweetheart table to be a high top table so we could see all our guests.” Kayla’s advice for others plannnig a wedding is, “As soon as possible start planning, especially if you want a summer wedding. Venues book up very quickly. We had the most trouble for dates and we were doing a year in advance and a lot of dates were already taken! I highly suggest booking venue, photographer and catering first. Do your research on photographers, as those photos will be the only thing you have to look back at your wedding. For brides, I would say go with your gut for your ideas/dress, don’t let other people make decisions for you or try to change your thoughts. Yes, of course take other people’s ideas into consideration, but don’t let them change 36 LAKES REGION BRIDE

REAL WEDDING STORY

A Perfect Wedding Day Teddy y Christa

all photos this story by Tamara Kohno Photography

LAKES REGION BRIDE 39

A wedding weekend at the Highland Lake Inn/Andover Barn was everything this couple wanted. With family and friends close by, the couple exchanged vows (with their beloved dogs as attendants, of course!) then dined and danced the night away in the tranquil setting of Andover, a picturesque village in central NH.

40 LAKES REGION BRIDE

Real Wedding Story - A Perfect Wedding Day Teddy & Christa Date of engagement: July 30, 2017; date of wedding: July 14, 2018 Putting your personal signature on your wedding is an important way to make the day all your own. Says Christa of her wedding at the Andover Barn at Highland Lake Inn in Andover, NH, “I wanted our wedding to be different than my sisters’, who both got married in tropical climates. It was important for us to have our wedding on the East Coast closer to our friends and family. What better place to celebrate than at my then fiance’s family bed and breakfast? The Highland Lake Inn is perfect for us because of the charm, comfort of home, and rustic farm style New England vibe we wanted. The wedding was fairytale and forest themed. Christa explains, “We decorated the barn beams with ivy, hung Edison lights, used pillar candles throughout, had the big bright stars (Highland Lake Inn décor), antique looking lanterns and ivy on the tables, Mason jars with ribbon and flowers as centerpieces, and Mason jars with sparkle fairy lights leading up to the tent. The altar was made of sticks covered in greenery and sunflowers. We used tall milk jugs for flowers outside the barn doors, and made our own direction sign to include all the places our guests had traveled from as a special appreciation. The colors we used were navy, blush and gray.” The couple live out-of-state and had to do their planning from a distance. Christa offers this advice for others plannning a wedding, “It is important to do your research, read the reviews, and be in communication with your vendors. Gail and Pecco (the owners of Highland Lake Inn) assisted us in getting in contact with the local bartenders, the rental company, florist, photographer and caterers. Ask your venue for recommendations on vendors. Being from NH and knowing the area and having been there beforehand helped. Arrive a few days before the wedding for set up. I know it can be nerve-racking planning from a distance - but don’t worry, everything falls into place.” Favorite parts of the wedding for Christa were when her father walked her down to the altar (as one of Christa and Teddy’s favorite bands - Bonobo - was playing) and “when my husband saw me for the first time, having our friend officiate the wedding, having our dogs included in everything, our special and heartfelt vows, my 93-year-old grandmother’s speech during the ceremony (she flew from Florida to be there), being surrounded by friends and family, the phenomenal dinner, and ending our night with an impressive fireworks display. Getting married at Teddy’s family’s beautiful barn venue; it is such an important place to us. It was romantic, intimate, and always will be memorable.” cont. on pg. 53

REAL WEDDING STORY

Love at the Lake Lance y Alison

photos this story by Garone Photography LAKES REGION BRIDE 43

Love at the Lake Lance & Alison Date of engagement: Sept. 12, 2017 Date of wedding: Sept. 14, 2018 Lake Winnipesaukee has always held a special place in Alison’s heart. Since childhood, she has vacationed with family and friends at the lake. “I wanted to share the same experience of the lake and to create new memories with my then-fiance, Lance. We came to the Lakes Region on weekends and spent time on my brother’s boat and I would show Lance my favorite spots on the lake,” says Alison. “I’ve always admired Church Landing’s beauty from afar while boating on Meredith Bay. When we toured Church Landing it was on a beautiful September day. The water was quiet and peaceful and the mountains a majestic backdrop. We jokingly told the Church Landing staff if they could guarantee us a day like that, we would book it right away! Sure enough, with a little luck, they delivered. We had the perfect wedding day.” The couple planned an entire wedding weekend so friends and family who traveled from afar could really enjoy the area. With that in mind, the wedding planning motto was “fun and memories.” Alison explains, “We wanted to give our guests an unforgettable wedding weekend experience that was both fun and memorable. This was our wedding planning motto and if something didn’t adhere to these two simple rules, we didn’t waste our time with it. To give our guests the chance to experience the lake, after our rehearsal, we privately chartered the M/V Doris, one of the smaller of the M/S Mount Washington’s boats. We boarded from the docks in Meredith and took a sunset cocktail cruise (with appetizers). This was the highlight of the weekend for some of our guests, and they took in all the scenery and the beauty of boating on the lake and got to meet and socialize with others before the actual wedding. cont. from pg. 44 shared stories and gave a wide range of lake history to our guests. Afterwards, we headed to the Lakeside Grill at Church Landing at Mill Falls for the actual rehearsal dinner.” Lance and Alison wanted to have a live band for their wedding reception, and they say that “nothing will get your guests dancing through the night like a great band.” After lots of searching, Lance found a band he liked, called Radiance. “We hired them and got all that we bargained for and more because from the time we booked our band to the day of our wedding, one singer was on that season of American Idol and the other was on that season of the Voice! The whole band was fabulous and talented. Even months later, our guests still keep talking about the fun they had and how great the band was!” says Alison. “Since we wanted to make a weekend out of our big day, we invited our guests to join us the day after the wedding for a ‘Just Maui’d’ Hawaiian themed honeymoon bbq send-off at the Naswa Beach Bar and Grill. We recapped stories from the night before and had a few more toasts as newlyweds. We had a surprise turnout, since so many guests stayed the night at the lake!” Alison is a true Lakes Region bride and even drew inspiration from the cover of Lakes Region Bride magazine’s 2018 cover photo! She says, “I had always envisioned an outdoor wedding on a beautiful, sunny day. This drew me to the Lakes Region Bride magazine cover. Not only that, but the color scheme, the bride’s vibrant pink bouquet, and how much love appeared to be felt in that moment (‘lake love!’) and of course, with the beautiful lake as the backdrop. We definitely were inspired and took many of the ideas from the cover and made them our own.” Wedding colors were blush pink, navy and rose gold accents. Alison says, “The pink matched my pink diamond engagement ring and the blush undertones of my dream wedding dress. And because of our wedding theme, Lance ended up getting a rose gold wedding ring himself when we went to pick out our wedding bands.” Seven of Alison’s favorite people were her bridal attendants and Lance had seven attendants as well. “I had a ‘Man of Honor’ on my side and Lance had a ‘Best Woman’ on his side. We also had his 12-year-old son as the Junior Best Man, my niece as the Flower Girl and my Matron of Honor’s son as the Ring Bearer,” Alison says. Her advice for others in the wedding-planning process: “Remember when making any decisions, the best decision is your decision together. Don’t be influenced by others for what you envisioned and dreamed your day to be. Enjoy every moment. Stop, breathe, and look around from time to time on your day to take in the moments. It will fly by really fast, but if you do it right, you and your guests will have memories of your special day! REAL WEDDING STORY

A Creative and Special Wedding Tim y Chloë Photos by Erika Follansbee Photography

Story starts on next page

48 LAKES REGION BRIDE

Tim & Chloë Date of engagement: July 2017 Date of wedding: July 28, 2018 Chloë was a bride with a vision for her wedding, and she says, “As many brides know, it all starts with the dress! “At first, I bought a beautiful dress, but once I had it hanging in my closet, something felt off. I couldn’t imagine the day in that dress or the style and it felt like an uphill battle to coordinate the details. Impulsively, while I was on the slopes in January, I called about a Rue De Seine gown I had tried on in Boston, I reminded me of macrame and the colorful freedom of the early 1970s. I had only tried it on once for about five minutes, but suddenly with this inspiration, I could see the rest of the details fitting into place. The boutique agreed to sell me the sample gown, and the vision was born!” With a revised, more free-form wedding style, Chloë says, “at first my family thought I was crazy. I remember there being concern when I announced my color palate would be orange, but I was confident it would come together.” With that confidence and a vision, she sent a few photos of dresses and 1960s-70s counter culture paintings to a family member who is an artist and she used that inspiration to create a beautiful handcut print for the wedding invitations. “Her design fueled the overall vision,” Chloë says. cont. on pg. 51

cont. from pg. 49 Chloë and her mother planned the wedding, although they were living a few thousand miles apart. She credits her mother with being her most “trusted agent on location to meet with vendors and plan in-person. A lot of trust, phone calls and text messages went into the details. I focused on the fun stuff: photos, music, invitations, dresses and overall vibe. My mom made all the other arrangements, from food, flowers and chiavari chairs right down to tablecloths and tent rentals.” It could be assumed it would be difficult to plan such a beautifully themed wedding. “Planning a non-traditional wedding, in fact, felt like the easier path. It was a blank canvas. When something is new, you aren’t limited by expectations. Your wedding day shouldn’t feel like a competition, so don’t enter the race!” Chloë advises. The eye catching arch where the couple were married in an outdoor ceremony was created by Chloë and her father. “We built the arch together the week before the wedding. I have always relished helping my Dad with projects and get great satisfaction seeing something new and permanent built by our own hands. It was a poetic moment, and though my Dad and I will always be close, there was something symbolic about building an arch, or bridge, between my childhood and my life with Tim.” cont. on pg. 60

It is different for each bride, depending on their needs, budget and vision. Our wedding suites can include Save the Dates, Invitations, RSVP Cards, Envelope Liners, Place Cards, Menus, Seating Charts, Ceremony and Celebration Cards and Thank You Cards. We also have many add-ons such as stickers, foil-printed cocktail napkins, gift tags, napkin rings, treat bags, pencils, matchbooks, favor boxes and paper floral bouquets. “We definitely have a brand signature style in our greeting card line and the products we make, but when it comes to wedding invitation suites, we want the designer to be invisible. This means we want the couple’s style and inspiration behind their wedding to shine through. We live for adding little details that make every wedding unique.”

cont. from pg. 51 For those dreaming of a home setting for the ceremony, Chloë gives an enthusiastic, “Do it!” advice. She says she will never regret starting her married life in the place where it all began for both her and Tim, at home in NH. “Of course, there were heightened emotions and stress to get our backyard ready for guests. We worked as a family for two months, sawing, painting, furnishing and gardening, finishing just as the wedding party arrived for the rehearsal.” (Her parents’ home was also under construction at the time!) The wedding reception was held at Waukewan Golf Club in Meredith, and Chloë says they chose that venue because, “it has everything a bride could want: rustic woodwork, a high ceiling, open floor plan and a beautiful setting. It has conveniences such as bathrooms, air conditioning and paved parking. My parents held their reception at Waukewan 35 years ago, and that made it even more special.” The reception decor focused on pops of color and texture. The focal points were hundreds of colored glass vases, each one unique, filled with bright, natural blooms. Layered white and cream macrame and lace added to the organic feel. Garland and macrame hanging from the ceremony arch were used later in the day on the mantel at the reception.

Seating was long, family-style tables, which saved space and created a cordial environment. Finally, a long silk ribbon garland added height and visual interest above the tables, making the space feel larger. “The majority of the decor, from the vintage orange couch to the vases and bride and groom chairs, were purchased at thrift stores,” Chloë adds. The bridesmaid’s dresses were anything but traditional. This bride with a unique style wanted the dresses to be mismatched in keeping with the overall wedding decor. “My bridesmaids are beautiful, and I knew they each could bring something unique and radiant to the feeling of the day. Two of the dresses, a white angel-sleeve dress with colored embroidery and and orange drop waist dress with orange and blue embroidery, were central to my inspiration. I wondered, ‘what would a wedding with these bridesmaid’s dresses look like?’ It was the right choice and we started getting compliments on the dresses from male wedding guests. It’s not common for bridesmaids’ dresses to garner so much attention, let alone from the gentlemen!” Chloë’s advice for others planning a wedding? “Think about what wedding traditions are important to you, and which seem frivolous or limiting. Choose your favorite parts. For me, I wanted a white gown with a train, wedding speeches and an awesome band for dancing. And forget such things as long ceremonies, engraved cake cutters, ties and matching dresses!” Where did Tim and Chloë honeymoon? “We traveled to paradise for our honeymoon, to the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. We both grew up in Meredith, NH and no matter where we go, the crystal clear water of the lakes in NH claim our hearts. We had our first date on Tim’s sailboat in Meredith Bay, and got engaged standing knee-deep in the water of Sachem’s Cove, so honeymooning in the Lakes Region seemed fitting. We planned to waterski on the morning of our wedding, but our parents were worried if we happened to injure ourselves, we would be wobbling down the aisle. We decided they were probably right, so we left the waterskiing for the day after!” The Wedding Vendors Ceremony officiant: JP Frank Michel (a friend of Tim’s family) Ceremony music: Dan Walker Hair: Kim Guisti Makeup from Beauty Counter/Chloë Floral headpiece: handmade by Spanish designer Lena Rom, located in Phuket, Thailand Florist: Lakes Region Floral Studio Caterer: Marie Gerlie of Marie’s Catering, menu was created with the couple’s vegetarian/vegan diets in mind Cake baker: Ooo La La Creative Cakes, cake & cupcakes were chocolate with vanilla frosting Photographer: Erika Follansbee Photography Reception Venue: Waukewan Golf Club Reception Band: Dan Walker & band LAKES REGION BRIDE 61

Clearly Coral

62 LAKES REGION BRIDE

The Pantone color for 2019 is Living Coral and it will be center stage for weddings all over the Lakes Region. With a range of tonalities, coral is so versatile and so very pretty. The Belknap Mill in Laconia, NH is an 1823 brick building that exudes history and beauty. The mellow brick walls, the wooden floors and setting make this a perfect place to show coral in all its beauty. The sweetheart table pictured here offers a range of coral colors and textures and make a romantic, yet eyecatching statement. Lush florals echo the coral tones. The elegant white table cover gives added style.

Organize Your Wedding - the All-Important Timeline 9-12 Months (or longer) Before the Wedding Choose the date, talking with key players (family and those you want to be in the wedding) to make sure they are available. Tell family and friends about your engagement. Set a budget, taking into consideration what kind of wedding you want and can afford. (Big, intimate, country, modern, outdoor, tented? Color scheme?) Who will pay for what? Your parents, parents-in-law, you and your partner, or a mixture of all? Start a guest list and get guests’ addresses, asking your parents (if they are involved in the planning/contributing financially) for their lists of must-be-invited guests. Begin to shop for vendors: Caterer, reception venue, photographer - the most popular choices are booked over a year in advance, so don’t wait! Browse your potential choices in Lakes Region Bride magazine and online. Make appointments to view venues, talk with caterers and other vendors. As soon as possible, book caterer, venue, photographer, videographer, tent and other vendors and send deposits. Attend bridal shows in the region where your wedding will be held; sample foods/cakes, talk with vendors, get inspiration ideas. Get organized with a dedicated space for all your wedding appointments, receipts, etc. Use a binder, file folders or desk space. Discuss who will officiate your ceremony: family clergy, rabbi, JP or other and book that person. Ask wedding attendants to be in the wedding. Make appointments with bridal shop to try on gowns; decide who will go to the fittings with you. Meet with florists and sign contract with the one that suits your style and needs. Audition bands and DJs and book your choice. Make a list of what you will need for rentals: tables, chairs, tent, lighting if outdoors. Do you want/need a wedding coordinator? This can be helpful if you have a big wedding with big decor plans or if you live far away from the wedding location or have little time to plan a wedding. Talk to your insurance agent about wedding insurance. 9 Months Before the Wedding Purchase your wedding gown to allow time for alterations. Give bridesmaids the color scheme and any style you have in mind for the maids’ gowns. Set up gift registries online and in stores. Shop for your wedding cake; meet with bakers and sample flavors. Book any remaining wedding vendors. 6-8 Months Before the Wedding Who will host rehearsal dinner and where will it be? FInalize wedding dinner with caterer. Meet with invitation specialists, determine typeface, wording, envelopes, and place your order. 78 LAKES REGION BRIDE

Shop for tuxedos, suits or other groom and groomsmen attire. Discuss where you will honeymoon and book flight, hotel, etc. 4-5 Months Before the Wedding Compose a day-of timeline (this will likely change somewhat in the weeks ahead). Check out marriage license requirements. Buy attendants’ gifts. Invite guests to rehearsal dinner. 4-6 Weeks Before the Wedding Book appointments for wedding-day hair/makeup. Print ceremony programs. Get marriage license. Talk with ceremony musicians and make sure they have songs you want played and when music will be played. Confirm guest count and all details with caterer, baker, officiant, reception venue. Purchase and wrap gifts for wedding party, future husband/wife, parents. Write thank-you notes for gifts you have received. Pick up all wedding attire and try everything on to make sure all fits well. Break in your wedding shoes. 2 Weeks Before the Wedding Create seating charts for reception, give to caterer/reception facility coordinator/wedding coordinator. Confirm details with officiant, all deliveries such as flowers, create a list of must-have photos and give to photographer. Go over all payments and keep organized! Send any final payments that are due. Confirm all details, timing with all vendors. Invite and confirm a person to be in charge of guest book and gift table at the reception. Prepare toasts if necessary. Give wedding party personal info. packets with list of phone numbers, emails, the weekend’s schedule, directions, etc. The Day Before the Wedding Pack for the honeymoon. Make sure someone knows your travel plans for honeymoon. Check in with reception venue coordinator for final details. The Wedding Day Write a special message for your partner and ask someone to deliver it with a gift before the wedding. Eat something before the ceremony even if you aren’t hungry! Stay hydrated with water. Enjoy the big day! After the Wedding Day Ask a few members of the wedding party to check in with reception venue and make sure all gifts were picked up after the reception, any coats, etc. left behind. Ask someone to be in charge of getting your wedding gown to the dry cleaners for cleaning and preservation. Preserve some special things from your wedding day: Have your bouquet dried/professionally preserved, have the cake top layer frozen and eat it on your first anniversary.
