It’s All in the Details

As we gathered wedding stories and photographs for this issue, one thing came to mind above all else: details count. Without the table napkins colors, the right chairs, the flowers to embellish the wedding cake, the guest seating chart, and so much more, the wedding will not be as memorable and beautiful.

Brides and wedding planners have many details to remember and choose in the months leading up to the big day. The weather is a consideration; if it rains, you need umbrellas. If you are planning an outdoor fall wedding, you might expect the weather to be steady, but unexpectedly, the temperature could soar, similar to a hot summer’s day or become chilly. Thus, the bride must think about air conditioning or heaters for an autumn wedding.

These are just a few of the things to keep on a checklist, or rely upon your wedding planner to handle. Details are the important, moving parts for a wedding.

It can be overwhelming, but even if you forget a few things, your guests are unlikely to know. All that really matters is your joyful wedding day, surrounded by family and friends.

Remember the details, but don’t stress if a few things are forgotten. Have fun choosing colors, florals, a wedding venue, food, cake and of course, your glorious gown.

Happy wedding planning,

SIMPLY ELEGANT

Campers, Cups and Craft Cocktails

On the Rocks Bartending is seeing lots of new trends for weddings. These include Mobile Camper Bars, Custom Cups, and Custom Craft Cocktails. Says owner Amanda Thomas, “We are seeing a lot of custom cups from Tossware. Eco-friendly, sustainable cups are huge right now and as a wholesaler, we have been able to put people’s pets, dates and names and even their custom wedding logo onto these cups. It gives a special touch and guests love to take them home! We have been able to create some really special cocktails for couples this year. It shouldn’t just be a crowd pleaser; it should be a direct reflection of the couple. We’ve been procuring a variety of cold pressed juices and bitters and things out of the norm for the standard wedding bar. Any time we can use our mixology background is a good day for us!”

Rustic weddings are on the rise, according to Sheryl of 603 Barrels. “We have seen an increase in rustic decor rentals, such as our whiskey barrels, and whiskey barrel products to complete the country look of any wedding or event. Our most popular items are barrels, barrel bars and barrel coolers.”

Katie & Charlie

Date of engagement: April 4, 2021

Date of wedding: July 30, 2022 at Timber Hill Farm, Gilford, NH

“My vision, above all, was to have color, love, beautiful wildflowers, and local NH ferns,” says bride, Katie, of her wedding. “Charlie and I are hippie/earth children at heart (I am also an herbalist), and the inspiration behind the colors and flowers I chose came from a magazine cover (Origin) that I saw with a colorful flower-power/60’s/70’s vibe. I tracked down the artist (Michelle Parascandolo) and asked for her permission to use her art. I then personally designed our wedding invitations, save the dates, and table number cards using the pattern artwork. I even got fabric printed (on Spoonflower) and used the fabric for Charlie’s pocket square. I knew I wanted to use all of those colors throughout my wedding, so I shared the artwork with Susan at Lakes Region Floral. Susan brought the printed flowers to life with her beautiful arrangements for my bouquet, the bridesmaid’s hoops, the groomsmen’s lapel pieces, and the table and aisle arrangements.”

Katie continued the hippie/bohemian style with an off-shoulder prairie dress (with a slight daisy eyelet pattern) for her bridal look, “but since I love to accessorize, I knew I had to add a pop of color. I found a teal (peacock) velvet ribbon on Etsy and had it made into a belt for my gown. That ribbon also inspired much of my wedding theme. I also used it for a hat sash for Charlie and our son, Levon (they wore matching teal ties). I also wore teal velvet shoes handmade by Spanish designer Flor de Asoka.”

The couple are music lovers, and wanted to not only have fun music at their wedding, but decided to name each table after songs that represent them as a couple, where they are from, where they live now, and their friends, family, and their love. (Think: California Dreamin’, Wildflowers, All You Need is Love, Harvest Moon). Other details were a custom mirrored seating chart made by Handmade by Heidi; tables with mustard yellow table runners; hand-dyed teal napkins (by Event Home Decor of the Ukraine) with hand-picked ferns from Governor’s Island tucked in each napkin; bud vases filled with colorful wildflowers; natural herbs; local NH ferns, and multi-colored vintage water goblets from Inspiration Rentals.

Katie says, about their wedding venue, “When we found Timber Hill Farm, we knew it was our dream location. Being close to our family in Gilford made a lot of sense for people traveling to the area as well. We love nature, and Charlie is a chef, so the idea of being on a family-run farm and having a farm-to-table meal while overlooking the lake and the mountains was perfect for us. The barn is a complete work of art, and the fact that the Howe family built it themselves makes it even more impressive and unique. I think many couples can attest to the beauty and specialness of this venue, and owners Isaac and Jennifer were so helpful and caring. They truly made us feel like part of their family - and became instant friends. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.” continued on page 42

Monte and Megan

Date of wedding: August, 26, 2022 at the Margate Resort, Laconia, NH

by

Living in Boston, but loving the Lakes Region (the bride grew up in the area), Megan and Monte chose the Margate Resort in Laconia for their wedding because it offered an all-inclusive location. “We wanted a convenient, yet beautiful wedding venue,” says Megan. “Our rehearsal dinner was in the dining room at the Margate; there was hotel lodging for guests who traveled to be at our wedding; an incredible pavilion area for our ceremony; a roomy tent overlooking the lake for our reception just steps away from the pavilion, and an indoor pool for our after-party.”

The couple spent 1 1/2 years planning the wedding, with 100 guests attending. The color scheme was light blue, white and a summery pinkish. This was reflected in the maids’ gowns (blue) and the florals throughout the wedding (pinkish and cream). The groomsmen wore suits in a subdued blue and the groom had a stand-out blue colored suit. All together, everything worked seamlessly.

The morning of the wedding dawned warm and sunny, but rain was forecast for mid-day, so the staff at the Margate accommodated by switching the time of a scheduled boat ride (the bride had her heart set on a ride and photos in the bay area near the Margate in a vintage wooden boat.) The ride was to have taken place during the reception, but with rain in the forecast, it was rescheduled to mid morning. (The vintage boat was from the Ekal Activity Center.)

By the 3 pm ceremony, the skies opened and a rain storm moved through the area. Guests were seated in the pavilion for the ceremony, but the nuptials were held off until the rain ended a half hour later.

The ceremony was romantic and emotional with the backdrop of Lake Winnipesaukee and the lush florals. Guests watched as the couple exchanged vows and began their new life as husband and wife.

Following the ceremony, there was a cocktail hour in the nearby tent, where guests mingled and took in the lake views. The reception was catered by Hart’s Turkey Farm with a menu chosen by the couple. The three-tiered wedding cake was from Jacques Fine European Pastries, and each layer was a different flavor.

After dinner, guests took to the dance floor with music by Ramu and the Crew.

Says bride, Megan, “My most memorable parts of the day were being with family and friends, dancing and the pool party following the reception.”

Megan and Monte offer advice for couples in the midst of planning their wedding, “Get a binder when you start planning. Also, get a separate calendar so you can keep track of when deposits and deadlines are due. This was very helpful for us, because planning a wedding can be overwhelming. There are a lot of details.”

The bride also suggests couples watch the weather and be flexible with the plans for the wedding day.

After the memorable and fun wedding, the couple traveled to Greece and Italy for a two-week whirlwind honeymoon.

at Owl’s Nest Resort & Golf Club

all images by June and Louise Photography

With a guest list of 200 people, Deshanthi and Ryan needed a wedding venue that provided enough space, but was memorable and unique. “We researched a lot of venues online. We wanted lakefront or mountains and we found both at Owl’s Nest. We loved that our guests could stay onsite and we could have all the events in one place; we had our rehearsal dinner / welcome party at the tent and the wedding at the lakehouse. We had our ceremony on the deck of the lakehouse and the ºreception inside the lakehouse.”

The couple say, “The ceremony and our first dance were our two favorite parts of the night. It was so great to finally get married and see our vision come to life in a room filled with our closest friends and family.” continued on pg. 54

Their advice to couples in the wedding-planning process is, “Stay focused on what the day is about: the commitment and love between you and your partner. That is what everyone is there forall the other ‘stuff’ will get figured out and isn’t what you reflect on or remember - everything is elevated when you feel the love in the room. Don’t sweat the small stuff.”

The planning took about a year. “After getting engaged, we started looking at venues when visiting the Lakes Region in the summer of 2021,” says Katie.

“Since we were planning most of the wedding from across the country, we knew we would need some help, so we hired Megan from Willow Tree Events for a partial wedding planning/day-of-coordination package in July of 2021. Megan answered my many questions with patience and care, introduced me to among the best vendor team a bride could ask for, and created a flawless timeline, which her outstanding team executed the day-of without a hitch.

“The wedding ceremony was in the field with a gorgeous aisle and moon gate arbor decorated with flowers by Susan of Lakes Region Floral Studio. I walked down the aisle with my Dad to ‘Here Comes the Sun’ (acoustic guitar and singing by Lakes Region musician, Paul Warnick). The cocktail hour was on the patio outside the barn, and the reception was in the barn, and guests enjoyed mingling and exploring the entire Timber Hill property. It was fun to see the children running around, swinging on the swing, and visiting the photobooth bus.

“We wanted a big, colorful wedding to reunite family and friends from all periods of our lives - and from both coasts. A traditional wedding didn’t seem to fit who we are and our vision of love and unity. We consider our love to be free-flowing, not formal or constrained. We give ourselves and each other the freedom of expression, to be who we are in our souls and to love and be loved. Creativity plays a big role in our lives, and we wanted to show our loved ones who we are today with a beautiful, free, fun, and sunshiney-event to bring us together and celebrate love.

The bridesmaids were in an array of colors. The main colors for the wedding theme were Mustard Yellow and Teal/Peacock (to match the ribbon on Katie’s dress and the groom’s and ring security’s hat ribbon). “My sister, the Maid of Honor, wore a Peacock gown from Azazie. The bridesmaids wore Marigold, Blush Pink, Larkspur, Paprika, and Fuschia colored dresses. I presented them with my color palette, inspiration artwork, and color swatches and let them decide which colors they felt best suited their style or taste, and let them shop around for where they wanted to purchase their dresses. Some wore dresses from Azazie, and others were Dessy and Hayley Paige.”

The groom wore a light blue linen Lusso suit from Studio Suits with a Teal/Peacock tie from Azazie, and the Ring Security wore a Teal/Peacock pocket square, while the groom wore the satin custom-made pocket square with the floral artwork inspiration. The groomsmen wore light grey (white/black) linen summer suits from Studio Suits with Marigold Ties and Marigold Pocket Squares.

There were 102 guests from New England, Florida, California, and even Canada. “We chose not to have a honeymoon. Since many of our friends and family traveled far to spend time with us and vacation in the area after the wedding, we decided to stay at the lake and enjoy time with them,” Katie adds.

“We had a farewell breakfast the morning following the wedding at Camp in Meredith. One other fun part of our wedding was the vintage VW bus photobooth from Maine Photo Booth.”
