{thoughts from the editor}

Love ... and a Little Luck It has been a busy year at Lakes Region Bride. We have had the honor to work with some new - and some longtime - wedding professionals on style photo shoots and at bridal shows. Speaking of bridal shows, our second annual Fall Bridal Show at Church Landing in Meredith offered a busy day full of beautiful decor, wedding ideas, gowns and much more. The 2017 show will be Sunday, November 12, at the same Mill Falls venue. We saw new gown styles and colors this year, but it seems the things brides have come to love about Lakes Region weddings are the same as in past years: the lake as a backdrop, the peace and privacy of wooded settings, rustic barns and decor and of Marina Zinovyeva Photography course, lace in all its forms. Lakes Region Bride style photo sessions brought us to the country setting of Locke Falls Farm, and also to Castle in the Clouds for a dramatic, elegant Halloween themed wedding photo shoot, among other locations. Luck certainly was with us as the day ended at the Castle and the sun began to set. The lake turned to orange and gold and the sky flamed. The result was some incredible images; the photo above is just one from this group; see the entire story starting on page 22. Please keep Lakes Region Bride magazine handy as you plan your wedding. Brides often tell us the magazine is a valuable, unrivaled resource to find wedding professionals and to gather ideas and inspiration as they plan their wedding day. All our best and congratulations on your Lakes Region wedding. Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Editor Lakes Region Bride

“I’ve been baking for as long as I can remember,” says Sharon Lewis, owner of Sherry’s Cakes by the Lake. “My paternal grandmother spent summers with us when I was growing up, and she was always baking. And, as a child, my mother made all our birthday cakes. When I became a parent, I carried on the tradition. I found I had a knack for creating cakes and each year, the designs would become a little more challenging. People began to take notice of my cakes and with the encouragement of my husband and other family members, both immediate and extended, I turned my hobby into a business.”

Sherry’s Cakes by the Lake became a full-fledged business in March of 2015, but Sherry is no newcomer to the food service industry. As a waitress, she says she “loved meeting new people” and her other career choices are diverse (she worked as a private investigator, a manager at a rent-to-own store and in a chiropractor’s office). She adds, when asked about her training as a baker, “My paternal grandmother was an unbelievable baker. When she was in the kitchen, so was I. I still have her recipes.” Cake techniques have been learned by trial-and-error or from paid tutorials and the advice of other decorators. Out of all the cakes she creates, Sherry says, “My favorite cake to make is a gravity defying cake. Creating a piece of ‘cake art’ that is visually unbelievable is so much fun. When people ask, ‘How did you do that?’ it is the best compliment!” Sherry loves to experiment with new designs and styles. “I consider it a challenge to see if I can accomplish something I have never done,” she says. Her delicious chocolate chip cookie cake is a customer favorite. As far as shape and style, a traditional round-tiered continued on page 14

2017 Wedding Linen Trends by Michele Morrissette Wiggs

And another bridal season begins! Holiday engagements brought a new group of brides who are excited to start their planning. They are exploring Pinterest, attending bridal shows and reading magazines to design their perfect day, and the linen trends for this year provide something for everybody. Pantone’s color of the year, and one of our favorites, is “greenery” which is a natural for our beautiful New Hampshire background, and a great basic in shades from celery to kiwi to moss greens to mix with beiges, taupes or your favorite pastel flower colors. The trending terrarium look, which can combine metallic like copper, or Mason jar centerpieces, works great with all of the green shades too. Another popular look for this year is boho, or bohemian which is wonderful for the free-spirited bride, and mixes eclectic color and fabrics reminiscent of the 1970’s – unexpected bold colors and patterns mixed with vintage lace and details for a unique effect – a great way to update the vintage look and make it your own. Throw in some fancy details like big paper flowers and give it some hippie chic! It IS New Hampshire, and rustic elegance will always be with us, but this year it is a cleaner look and we are calling it farmhouse instead of rustic – long farm tables are very popular, with runners and homespun napkins rather than tablecloths – linen and pillowcase ticking are much less abrasive to the touch and offer a fresh update while keeping the natural theme. Bling is still with us and promises to be for a while, but in smaller amounts and neutral colors – try a champagne sequin runner over an ivory or champagne tablecloth, and mix it up with doupionni or satin napkins for a classic look that is not overdone. Draping and backdrops are more popular than ever, and can change the look of a venue, barn or tent to make it especially romantic, whether a dramatic backdrop behind a sweetheart table, or side drapes on a wall or tent, or pole covers and swagging in a tent or barn doorway. They can be done in white or any color and chiffon is the fabric of choice. So as you can see, the choices are exciting and of course, the best choice is what makes YOU feel special and shows your own personality – after all is said and done, it is YOUR day, YOUR way! Congratulations and have fun planning. (Michele Morrissette Wiggs is the owner of divine inspirations design studio, Meredith, NH. For more information, visit www.mydivineinspirations.com.)

She adds that the rustic look, birch tree and nake cakes are very popular right now. “The new trends for 2017 are leaning toward the ‘Geode’ cakes, drip cakes and mirror glazed cakes. Cupcakes are very popular within my business. They are a great visual addition to a smaller cake. Some brides choose to have a cutting cake and serve their guests individual cupcakes.”

In the future, Sherry says she would love to teach her children the art of cake decorating. “They are, of course, my biggest fans.” Visit www.sharonlewis0522.wixsite. com/cakesbythelake or call 603-522-5068. Sherry’s Cakes by the Lake is located in Brookfield, NH.

The table decor (and linens) was the work of Michele Wiggs, owner of divine inspirations design studio, located in Meredith, New Hampshire. White vintage hand-embroidered cotton napkins were collected by a bride over several years. The silver gray and pink Dupioni napkins offered a perfect light style along with the pale pink Dupioni table covering. It all fit seamlessly in a garden setting. The white high-top tafetta leaf linen caught an afternoon breeze. The old-fashioned flowers were the finishing touch for the centerpiece and bride’s bouquet, created by Mountain Laurel Flowers of Ashland, New Hampshire. Mountain Laurel Flowers also provided the antique easy chair. The lacy and romantic Maggie Sottero gown looks just right on bridal model Erin. The gown was provided by Inspirations Bridal Boutique in North Conway, New Hampshire. The comfortable white folding garden chairs were provided by Taylor Rental of Laconia, New Hampshire. The beautiful vintage floral cake was hand painted and fondanted. Intricate, unique and artsy wedding cakes are true works of art. Hand-painted cakes are a great way to reflect your theme, the season (spring, fall etc.) or even match your invitations and stationary. Cake created by Ooo La La Creative Cakes, LLC. Erika Follansbee Photography captured the day of romance in the garden.

All images by Marina Zinovyeva Photography A late-autumn, Halloween wedding can be atmospheric, romantic and slightly Gothic if the location and decor are just right. Pick a deeply rich color palette, add gowns of lace and flowers in keeping with the time of year, and you have a memorable, Halloween wedding that replaces traditional orange and black with an upscale and emotional day of dramatic romance. LAKES REGION BRIDE 25

Gothic Halloween Romance continued from page 25 Castle in the Clouds in Moultonboro, New Hampshire has unique beauty. The property’s mountaintop location has stunning views of Lake Winnipesaukee. It is the perfect place for a wedding, and where better to stage a Halloween-themed Gothic romance style photo shoot? For a Halloween wedding, forego the typical bright-orange and black decorations and instead pick a color palette of deep crimson, fuchsia and other colors for drama. You will feel like you stepped into the pages of a Gothic romance novel set on the windswept English moors. The late-fall Halloween themed style shoot was photographed by Marina Zinovyeva Photography, who got into the spirit by capturing every detail of the day...including a blazing sunset. The gowns, provided by A Day to Remember Bridal Boutique and Uniquely Couture, were coordinated by the owner of both shops, Helen Dionne. She says of the gown (page 22), “The all over lace, long sleeve gown is ‘Amor’ by Pronovias (available at Uniquely Couture Bridal). Features of the gown are a Bateau neckline, scoop back, and trumpet style. The gown (shown on page 25 and available at A Day to Remember Bridal Boutique) of the bride seated by the fireplace is made by Sincerity Bridal, style #3889, shown in Sand/Silver. It is also available in Ivory/Silver and White/Silver. This gown really represents what is trending right now: A lace bodice with a drapey tulle skirt. Off the shoulder is very romantic and is being seen more on the runway.” Ivy and Aster Floral Design filled the photo shoot with flowers in colors and shapes in keeping with the theme. Says Ivy and Aster owner Sara Severance, “To create dark romance, I used a jewel toned palette of deep crimson accented with plum, fuchsia and blue florals to add depth and contrast to the fall backdrop. Textural thistle, mixed eucalyptuses and dried pods lent themselves to the season and accentuated the soft petaled roses and romantic vanda orchids. Large composite roses, handmade from the petals of several individual roses assembled together, are the perfect choice for those seeking unique, overflowing, romantic texture.” (For more on composite roses, see the ‘Focus on Flowers’ feature on page 52.) The dusky gray/black tiered wedding cake from Sherry’s Cakes by the Lake is simple enough to handle fresh flowers for decoration. The candy apples, sugar donuts and black macaroons keep to the theme without being over-the-top Halloweeny. Beautiful handmade invitations and table/menu cards were created by Impress Me Designs with the rich colors and script typeface matching the decor. The details in a themed wedding are all-important. Watch the color palette and use textured fabrics in a special location to create an upscale, Gothic day of romance.

Cassie and Mike continued from page 31 Cassie and Mike met through mutual friends and got engaged in November of 2015. Their wedding took place on October 15, 2016 at the Sanbornton Congregational Church with a reception following at Steele Hill Resort, also in Sanbornton. Cassie says her mother visited Steele Hill and “fell in love with it.” Once they were engaged, Mike and Cassie contacted the facility to inquire if their wedding date was available. She recalls, “In December, we met with Penny (wedding coordinator) at Steele Hill, and we immediately fell in love the resort; the views were breathtaking even in the wintertime. Since they had our wedding date available; we didn’t need time to think about it - we immediately decided it was where our wedding reception was going to be and everything literally fell into place! Penny (and everyone at Steele Hill Resort) was absolutely amazing to work with. The Hilltop Room, where our cocktail hour and reception was held, has beautiful views.” The ceremony site, Sanbornton Congregational Church, was also a recommendation of a friend. “I always knew I wanted to get married in a church. I joked with Mike that it would rain on our wedding day so we needed to be indoors, but I really wanted it indoors in a church setting anyway. We had a good sized guest list, since we both come from large families. Once we met Rev. Ruth Martz and saw the church from the inside, we knew immediately it was the perfect location. Rev. Ruth was so easy to open up to and talk with. The country setting of the church, along with the amazing stained glass windows is absolutely beautiful.” The autumn season came into play as to where the couple would get married: the Lakes Region. They both like the color navy (along with dark gray and champagne) and incorported it into their color scheme. Cassie adds, “We had a bench handmade to use instead of guest book. It is now displayed in our home.” Centerpieces were simple: candles with hurricane vases and a floral centerpiece on the head table that matched the bouquets. Traditional placecards were printed on ivory paper with guests’ names printed in navy. “Since we knew there would be children coming to our wedding, we wanted to do something fun that everyone would enjoy while dancing. We had glow stick bracelets and necklaces, which were a huge hit. The adults loved them, too,” says Cassie. Family and friends traveled to the wedding from all over the country and the couple wanted the thank-you gifts to be unique to NH and they also wanted to give something people would use and enjoy. “We decided to use maple leaf-shaped bottles of NH maple syrup, which we ordered from Ben’s Sugar Shack in Temple, NH. We added a simple ‘Thank You’ tag to each bottle,” Cassie says. When asked what her favorite part of the day was, Cassie reflects, “It truly was one of the best days of our lives. We were so fortunate to have family and friends travel from all over the country to share the day with us; it was a picture-perfect NH fall day. The weather was gorgeous, the leaves were at peak foliage and we were surrounded by 160 of our closest family and friends. “One of my favorite parts of the day was seeing Mike at the altar for the first time, the speeches and the surprise fireworks display my mom worked hard (with Penny) to make happen. I have to add too, our sons made the day so special. Seeing the love, happiness and excitement on their faces was wonderful. “They watch our wedding video more than we have and ask if we can get married again because they had such a fun time and that it was the best party they have ever been to. One of my favorite memories is when my 5 year old first saw me in my dress and said “mom you look beautiful. You look like a princess” as well as

A Family Affair Cathleen and Ajay Engaged in November of 2015, Cathleen and Ajay met while playing touch football. They were married on July 30, 2016 in the charming village of Hebron, NH. The day was also an annual event in the village - the Hebron Fair. (On Fair day, the town’s population swells, and the village green has all sorts of events.) The couple’s wedding was within view of the fair, and it added to the festivity of the day. Cathleen’s mother helped a great deal with the wedding planning. “It was a true family effort! The bulk of the credit goes to my mom, especially, for pulling all of our fantastic vendors together,” Cathleen says. The ceremony was held at the Newfound Audbon Center property and the reception took place nearby at Meadow Wind Bed and Breakfast. Cathleen explains the ceremony and customs, “It was extremely important for us and our families to blend our cultures (Christian and Hindu) into our wedding. We wanted our wedding to symbolize how we planned to live our lives together, integrating our backgrounds and family traditions. We created a blended Christian-Hindu wedding ceremony in which we wove traditions from both faiths into one ceremony. We were blessed to find two wonderful priests, one Christian (Rev. Paulo Franca from Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ) and one Hindu (Kaustubh Lele from Ohio), willing to work together to co-perform the ceremony. Ajay created a step-by-step program to help guide our guests through the ceremony. It was certainly challenging to blend the two ceremonies together, but in the end, it was well worth the challenge. We’re thrilled with how our ceremony represented us.” Cathleen’s family band, the Clarkridge Boys, performed the ceremony music and Cathleen’s cousin, Amy Feldman, Associate Pastor for Youth and Families, The Union Church in Waban, performed a welcome and set a wonderful tone for the ceremony. Because the wedding was in NH, where Cathleen is from, the couple also wanted to find ways to represent Ajay’s background during the reception. The lake, just 15 feet from the house, can be seen from every room in the home and spectacular sunrises and sunsets can be

enjoyed from indoors or from the screened porches. Durgin Estate is a special place for guests to stay - it is available for lodging. Offering a great room, a parlor, six bedrooms and three full baths, the estate can comfortably lodge up to 12 guests. Enjoy the conveniences of home, including a fully equipped and updated kitchen and laundry room. Over the years, the property owners have cultivated 12 perennial and annual gardens, planned for sequential bloom from spring through fall. Guests who stay at Durgin Estate love its beautiful location, detailed restoration and many opportunities for relaxation and recreation. A Theatrical Love Story - Katelyn and Casey continued from page 37 Casey and Katelyn met in high school, but did not start dating until college. Their first date? To the movies, of course! They were engaged in August of 2014 and married in August of 2016; the ceremony and reception were held at a place very fitting for a couple involved in theatre: the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord, NH. Recalls Katelyn, “We had two years to plan our wedding, but really only needed a year. We were living in NYC during the first year of our engagement so we spent time putting all our ideas together and coming up with our venue location and theme. “We discussed, even before our engagement, that we wanted to do some sort of theatrical wedding because it fits both our careers, our background and our lifestyle perfectly. I grew up as a dancer and Casey was an actor. We now both still work in the arts and entertainment industry, Casey in film production and myself in fashion. Finding the right location was the question. After researching many venues (theatre and non) I discovered Capitol Center. Their website stated that they rent out their venue for events, including weddings, so I contacted them for a showing. We met Steve Martin of the Capitol Center, for a tour in December while we were home for the holidays. The Capitol Center was decorated for Christmas and looked breathtaking! (We knew we wanted a summer wedding but just loved the look of everything.) Steve was so knowledgeable about the space and supportive of our ideas to host our wedding on stage but still keep it convenient for our guests by having a cocktail hour and dinner reception on site as well.” After finalizing the venue, the couple worked on the remaining details: catering, florist, decor, etc. “Steve was so helpful and allowed us to choose whoever we wanted for vendors and was always available if we needed help. As far as color and theme, we wanted it to be ‘Old Hollywood’ and super neutral. After finding my dress, I found that light gray, pink and silver matched perfectly and flowed with the dark and vintage decor of the Capitol Center.” With both Katelyn and Casey having drama and dance backgrounds, they knew having a stage to work with meant hosting a full production, because, why not? She says, “The music we selected for our wedding was from our favorite movies, but also a movie we saw on a date together, The Lord of the Rings. We wanted to keep the music soft and romantic, but also incorporate our Irish background as well. Prior to the bridal party entrance we thought we need something to play on the projectors on both sides of the stage. Casey, being a video editor, came up with the best idea of combining our favorite movie scenes along with iconic love scenes for guests to enjoy while taking their seats, with of course complimentary popcorn on the side. We had scenes from Titanic to the Notebook, to 500 Days of Summer to Wall-E playing with light jazz music as guests entered the theatre. Once everyone took their seats and after both moms had their entrance, we had a short montage film play before the bridal party entered. Casey created and edited this as well. This short film included old pictures from when we first started dating, snippets of film from various vacations and scenes and photos from our engagement shoot. With our wedding party being slightly large, Steve lent us risers so we could continued on page 56

Cassie & Mike continued from page 33 the look on my 8 year old son’s face when he first saw me too and came over smiling to give me a hug!” Cassie adds, “Mike’s favorite parts of the day, if he had to narrow it down, were seeing me enter the church, seeing our son’s smiling as they walked down the aisle proudly, hearing the speeches at our reception and being announced for the first time as husband and wife and also as Mr. and Mrs.” Cassie’s advice for others planning a wedding would be, first, to stay organized. “I kept everything in a binder. When I needed to refer to something or look back it was all in one spot (I also had a folder in my email where I saved all wedding-related emails). In my binder I had a spreadsheet with vendors, the total we owed, what we had put down for a deposit. I kept it updated as we would pay for things. Secondly, I would say to keep on top of things, do a little bit at a time. Even if it seems like you have several months until your wedding, don’t wait. Even if it’s little things. For example, a friend helped me put the thankyou tags on the maple syrup bottles a few months before the wedding and my mom helped me stuff the welcome bags a few weeks before the wedding. I even wrapped all the groomsmen and bridesmaid’s gifts two weeks before the wedding. This made for a relaxing week leading up to our wedding; everything was really ready to go! “Lastly, Mike and I can’t stress enough that your wedding day is about the two of you; make the decisions you want to make about your wedding day. Planning a wedding can be stressful but be a team. It’s your day, so plan it exactly how you want.” She continues, “I highly suggest that if you are going to splurge in any area of your wedding budget, let it be your photographer. Your wedding day will go by so quickly; other than the memories you have, you will want to have amazing pictures to look back on to capture your day. Your wedding day is not a day you want to cut corners and later regret not going with a great photographer. I would also hire someone to do a video. There is so much you miss on your wedding day; it’s amazing to watch everything you missed and piece together the stories you are told to see what everyone else saw. “The third place I would splurge on would be the DJ. Our DJ, Chris Ialuna, was absolutely spectacular. I have never been to a wedding where literally the dance floor was packed the entire night. “Take time to enjoy your day; make sure to look around and take everything in because it truly goes by in the blink of an eye! I wish we could do it over and over again because it truly was one of the best day of our lives!” Cassie says. Focus on Flowers with Sara Severance, CFD The Composite Rose: Are you planning a romantic, summer or fall, elegant, garden party wedding? Love peonies? Composite roses could be your new best flower friend. For me, roses represent all that is love, beauty and tradition. Their classic soft petals and fragrance lend themselves well for a wedding bouquet. It’s rare that I meet a bride who doesn’t hope to use them as a part of her wedding flower design. Roses come in a multitude of colors, and there are several popular varieties of roses to choose from including standard, spray and garden. Spray roses are made up of several smaller blooms on a single stem. These blooms are perfect for those wanting a look that is local and organically styled. Garden roses are fragrant, larger blooms with soft, swirling This blush composite rose is hand-made from the petals of three standard roses. centers and are often mistaken for peonies—they are a great substitute for the short-seasoned beauty! The standard rose is the one we all recognize with its traditional shape and petal structure. (If I’m to find a bride who’d rather not use roses, it’s the standard rose that she’s bored with.) Enter the composite rose. A composite flower is created by taking the petals from several individual flowers of the same variety, in this case using the standard rose, and combining them into one single oversized bloom. To do so, I start by building a stiff base around one central flower to use for (photo right with table: One composite rose goes a long way for visual impact! Consider using 1-3 of these large, focal flowers in a low centerpiece or bouquet.)

“You did an amazing job! We can’t thank you enough!”

attaching the additional petals. From there, it’s a combination of glue, tenacity and a bit of magic to bring it all together gracefully! The end result is a lush statement piece of fine flower art.

Gilford Community Church

Romantic Tranquil Picturesque

Composite flowers were quite popular in Mid-Century wedding design. A stylish bride in the 1940’s or 50’s would choose to use a single, massive composite flower as her bridal bouquet. A quick internet search for composite flower will show you a few different popular options—cymbidium orchids, oriental lilies, gladiolas and roses all make striking composite flowers. I love the retro vibe of the technique, but I also love the current trend of loose, mixed flower bouquets in all their natural, fresh-picked glory. So why not combine the two? The look of smaller, yet still statement worthy, composite rose blooms arranged into loose, organic, mixed flower bouquets is innovative and authentic all in the same clutch. With the romantic look of a large peony or dahlia and the intrigue of a new flower that none of your BFF’s will use at their wedding, composite roses could be your newest obsess-worthy wedding flower board. These unique beauties are sure to be ooo’ed and aahhh’ed by your guests and memorable in all your wedding photographs. Katelyn and Casey continued from page 49 evenly split the groomsmen on both sides of the stage with the bridesmaids standing in front on both sides. Reason being, we are a bridal party and not separate; we wanted it to feel like we were all one big group supporting each other. Of course we had the Maid of Honor and Best Man stand slightly in front and beside us, which meant the world because they are our siblings.” Casey and Katelyn, and Katelyn’s mother (Lisa Schott), and close family friend (Alexis Hartnett) helped plan every detail of the wedding. “Alexis had a great role in coordinating decor deliveries and setting up the day of, which was a weight off our shoulders,” Katelyn says. With about 160 guests, eight Bridesmaids including the Maid of Honor, one junior bridesmaid, 11 groomsmen including the Best Man, and two junior groomsmen, it was a full house. Katelyn says getting married on stage was “amazing! It brought us back to our roots. I felt like I was on stage for a dance recital and he was on stage to perform his first lead role. It was us. We looked out to see our loved ones in the audience and could tell they enjoyed the atmosphere and also could see us very well! It also felt like we were slightly secluded from everyone and able to be in our own moment. It felt so magical with the lights shining down on us!” Katelyn’s advice to others in the wedding-planning process is to Google the venues, go in person, and sample food. That’s truly the best way you will find out if vendors meet your expectations, she advises. “The fact that we scheduled many in-person meetings and kept in constant communication with the Capitol Center is truly what made the whole experience smooth and stress-free. Find a venue that speaks to you and your fiance. It is so much more special to create a memory where it means the most to you! Your guests want to feel the love you both have for each other, eat a great meal and dance a lot to celebrate with both of you.” Katelyn and Casey’s Wedding Professionals: Officiant: Lindsay Harrington, who was also a bridesmaid and close family friend of the groom Ceremony & Reception: Capitol Center for the Arts, Concord, NH Flowers: PJ Flowers Photography: A&M Tetrault Photography Bride’s gown: Maggie Sottero Tuxedos: Men’s Warehouse Cake: Frederick’s Pastries Catering: Celebrations Catering Decor rental: Special Events of New England (red carpet and chairs) DJ- DJ Dispatch (also did uplighting and photo booth)

Cathleen and Ajay continued from page 41 a delicious, Indian-inspired menu and the band, Cover Story, integrated Indian music during the reception. Ajay’s family also hosted a second reception in Cleveland two weeks later, which allowed even more family and friends to celebrate the marriage. The wedding theme was natural/rustc, with colors of burlap, cream, forest green and some red. Rather than be nervous about a big event like Hebron Fair (just across the street) on their wedding day, the couple embraced it. Cathleen recalls, “We did know that the fair was the same day and we were excited that this wonderful little town would be bustling on our wedding day. We were concerned about parking and noise, but neither were an issue. In fact, there were a few horses behind our venue while we were getting ready, which made for some fun photos!” Eric Foster from Lakes Region Tent & Event recommended Meadow Wind to Cathleen’s mom. “We visited and knew right away it was the perfect location. We wanted a quiet outdoor location with a beautiful backdrop near Plymouth and couldn’t have found a better spot,” says Cathleen. Missy, the owner of Renaissance Floral in Bristol, created the beautiful wedding bouquets and centerpieces. “Missy was wonderful to work with,” Cathleen explains. “She understood our vision after only a short conversation and a sharing of a few pictures. She went above and beyond to give us the look we wanted and helped us execute on our wedding day. Missy’s work is high quality.” The couple’s advice for those in the wedding planning process is to “focus on the few things that matter most to you about the wedding. In our case it was incorporating our family, friends, and our backgrounds into our ceremony, having delicious food and drinks and a fun band, and finding a naturally beautiful location in New Hampshire. It’s easy to get caught up in the details, but ultimately continued on page 68

9 things to ask when booking a Barn/Farm or private estate wedding by Terry Moran

So, you’re dreaming of getting married on a farm? You’ve seen the blogs and wedding photos: a heavenly display of rustic picture frames, recycled pallets, old cars, Mason jars, string lighting, wagon rides, bales of hay and whiskey barrels. The trend of hosting your wedding on a farm, complete with a barn or tent for your reception, continues to be the primary choice in NH. I personally love the trend and how it has changed and morphed over the years. As someone who DJs many barn/farm weddings, I have some suggestions (9 to be exact) to make your barn wedding a great experience. 1. Consider hiring a professional wedding planner They will help navigate the unknowns, and save you more money than you will ever pay them. They have done this many times over and will ensure a stress-free wedding weekend for you, and recommend vendors that have a great reputation and are easy to work with. 2. Some barns don’t have bathrooms or electrical setups for a large gathering. Most of the farms you will fall in love with were not originally built for 100+ people partying! The option is to rent porta-potty units or bathroom trailers. The new trailers are really nice; they are not the portable bathrooms you see at football games, but rather, luxury trailers that remind you of a nice hotel room. Porta potty placement will depend on where the water/electrical hook ups are and the location of parking. Make sure to plan on this expense-it is worth it. There are many reputable companies in NH that do it right. Be aware of electrical needs – work with the property owner to determine the electrical capacity and if necessary, hire a licensed electrician to ensure the DJ/band, caterer, lights, etc. are all on different, modern circuits with plenty of extension cords to reach their designated spots. Keep in mind every section of the farm that you will be using for your wedding, and check on the electricity that is available (or needed) in each spot for ceremony, cocktails, dinner, reception, etc. 3. Fully understand your budget to create a complete wedding. Thanks to blogs and websites that showcase rustic properties, it might seem this is the more budget-friendly way to have a wedding. This is why it would be helpful to hire a professional wedding planner or do the research yourself to understand the Total Cost of Ownership (Or TCO) for the wedding. Ask the property owner what is included in the rental fee. Barn rentals vary from place to place; don’t assume you are also getting an onsite wedding coordinator, chairs (2 sets, for ceremony and reception!), tables, plates, linens, ceremony setup, venue clean up, trash and so forth. You may need to rent items (including labor & delivery) and quarterback delivery and pickup times, as well as set up times. It is your job to understand what the expectations are, and what your barn/farm fee includes. 4. Pick vendors that are familiar with farms/barns/rustic vibe and can blend in. The rustic look is popular, and you want everything that you buy/rent for the day to match your intended look. For example, ensure your caterer can assist with a bar that does NOT resemble a NYC nightclub. Your DJ should have a setup in keeping with the rustic décor, vs. a high-tech, modern look. Your photo booth would look out of place if it were super modern. (For example, we have built a barn door to put in front of the DJ setup, a photo booth that looks like a barn, a rustic microphone from 1953, a suitcase from the 1930s that is rebuilt into a cell phone charging station for your guests, etc. (Everything should blend or it will seem out of place to guests.) 5. The party ends at 9 or 10 pm. While it differs from town to town in NH, some properties are restricted with noise ordinance rules for both outside and inside receptions. While the idea of rocking it out until midnight is something you have always expected, it may be that a late night bonfire with your friends is how your wedding concludes, rather than on the dance floor. Ask each venue what time the music has to end, and especially what time people have to be off the property. Validate that nothing has changed a few weeks before your wedding, when final plans are in place. 6. Booked it? Great! Where is everyone staying? Some farms in NH have onsite accommodations or allow camping, which are clutch. Others do not have overnight accommodations and are in very rural locations. You may find a spot 2 or 3 hours from your home that is exactly what you want; make sure there are hotels reasonably close that can accommodate your guests. 7. Who do you love? Consider your guest list. If your dream wedding includes partying with 300 of your family and friends, you might have to plan to rent a tent to accommodate a larger guest list. Many barns allow for this and have designated areas for tent placement. 8. Rules, restrictions, and “certainly not.” Some farms are still working farms during the week, and then transform into a venue on the weekend. They may have a list of rules that you and all guests will need to follow about parking, smoking, tiki torches where you can drink on the property, using ladders, hanging Rustic cell phone courtesy Crown Special Events décor, setting up corn hole or other games, 66 LAKES REGION BRIDE

campfires, sparklers, trash removal, etc. If you have a cool idea, always double check! 9. How do we get there from here? Walk it out. You are choosing the entire property for the ambiance you want. Ideally, the ceremony will be in one spot, cocktail hour in another, and the reception taking place either in the barn or under a tent. When deciding where things are located, understand how far your guests are going to have to walk from point “a” to “b” to “c”. How far from where they park their cars is the wedding location? Are there wagons or golf carts that can transport them from spot to spot? Are there uneven spots or hilly areas they will have to walk across? What option is there for those that can’t make the walk? These are all really important things to consider, especially for older guests or those with physical challenges. I adore farm and barn weddings. In fact, they are my favorite to spin! It is important to know what questions to ask as you start shopping for your dream location. There are many things to keep in mind; researching each property will help. I believe, if you keep in mind these 9 important facts before you start searching for your unique rustic venue, you will be better equipped to have a wonderful barn wedding. Megan and Mike Date of engagement: June 14, 2014 Date of Wedding: June 25, 2016 When planning a wedding, it is important to take all the help that is offered. That is what Megan did as she began to plan her Lakes Region wedding. She says, “I knew I would need a wedding planner because I don’t live in the area and we were getting married at a non traditional wedding venue. My number-one priority was to have our wedding in a beautiful setting on the lake. Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro was one of the few locations that was directly on the water.” The couple worked with Private Weddings and Events, and counted on the knowledge of owner Mindy Rossignol. (Mindy is known for designing beautiful, creative weddings in all sorts of locations.) In planning the wedding, driftwood came into play. “I found an inspiration picture and shared this picture with Mindy. I also knew I wanted to use driftwood; Mike and I go for walks on the beach every weekend with our dog and collect driftwood. so this was an important and sentimental part of the decor. Mindy took my inspiration picture and the driftwood and created my dream day. It was exactly what I wanted. I wouldn’t have changed a thing about the decor,” Megan explains. The bride’s in-laws have a house on the lake and Mike has wonderful childhood memories of the area. Megan says, “Brewster is on the water and I loved driving down the hill towards the lake and seeing the picturesque view. I knew I wanted to get married in this magical location.” About her gorgeous wedding gown, Megan says, “I didn’t imagine myself in a ball gown; however, when I tried one on, I felt like a bride. I also wanted a dress that was unique and fun. I loved the fabric and the different layers of this dress.” (Gown designed by Haley Paige.) “I would highly recommend hiring a wedding planner,” Megan says. “Mindy allowed me to enjoy planning my wedding and enabled me to have fun the day of, because I wasn’t worried about a thing! I would also recommend having decor pieces that are sentimental and have a story behind them, as we did with the driftwood. It makes it more personal. If you are planning an outdoor wedding, plan a backup location in case weather doesn’t work out, then don’t worry about it! It was hard not to worry about weather but it’s out of anyone’s control. (Easier said than done, I know.)”
