{thoughts from the editor} A castle. Beautiful horses. Brilliant October foliage. These elements worked together to create an inspirational style shoot (pg. 21) for the 2016 edition of Lakes Region Bride magazine. A talented group of wedding vendors gathered at Castle in the Clouds and Riding in the Clouds stables on a sunny autumn afternoon; the images created by Philbrick Photography made the day complete. If there is any theme to this year’s weddings, it seems to be having fun. We are featuring a number of real weddings that offer unique celebrations in a variety of settings. We are very happy to see that couples are having fun with their special day, as well as honoring their commitment to family, faith and togetherness. This issue is jam-packed full of beautiful weddings, inspiring ideas...and of course, the area’s best and most talented wedding vendors. Dive in and find ideas for your wedding - the advertisers herein are pros and very willing to make your wedding day all you dreamed it could be! It started with a couple unafraid to put themselves out there - on a ledge, as a matter of fact. Says Jay Philbrick of Philbrick Photography, “I started doing these adventure-based bridal sessions in 2007. I came up with the idea of putting a couple on the side of a cliff because before I started my photography business, I was a full-time climbing guide. When we began our wedding photography business I had a couple of places in mind from my guiding days I thought would make great backdrops for a bride and groom. In my photography I had always been attracted to contrasts of a beautiful subject in a stark or unlikely location, and the cliff ledges I had in mind seemed perfect for this. In 2008, a couple who had just hired us to cover their wedding mentioned they were climbers and that got the ball rolling. I asked them if they were up for it and they were. This first couple were the only climbers in any of these sessions. We have done four or five couples on the cliff and have another booked for next season. While many have seen the images (the photos have recently received worldwide attention in the media), few know how Philbrick Photography achieves the dramatic end results. “These sessions usually begin well before sunrise so we can have the couple in place before the sun comes up to catch some beautiful light and to catch the sun rise, if there is one. Some days we have had a lot of fog and mists which we weren’t hoping for but made for some dramatic images. We always use a highly trained mountain guide who is certified to an international standard for the rigging and safety work-Marc Chauvin of Chauvin Guides International. He and I may start as early as 3:30 am, building the anchors and raising and lowering systems we’ll need for cont. on pg. 13

the couple and myself and Marc. Vicki (Philbrick) and our assistant, Justin Macomber, arrive next to photograph different angles and behind-the-scenes images. I photograph from both the top of the cliff and over the edge hanging from a rope. “We approach the ledge from the top of the cliff. The ledge is about 30 feet below the top and 350 feet above the valley floor. We lower the bride and groom down to the ledge on one rope while they are belayed with another. The systems and back-ups Marc builds are quite advanced, redundant, and safe. In fact, we are all probably at greater risk driving to and from the session than we are when cliff side. The bride and groom are lowered one at a time and tied into a hidden anchor on the ledge. Depending on the bride’s gown, she may wear it down during the lower or put it on while on the ledge with Marc’s help. He brings it down to her. Once the couple is in place, I direct them into different poses and Vicki, Justin, and I are all shooting from different locations and angles with different lenses to get a variety of looks. I am often hanging off the side of the cliff and am sometimes to the side, right above, or even on the same ledge with them. For most of the images we try to use posing and camera angle to hide the ropes and anchors; there is no Photoshop whenever possible.”

The sessions take about 90 minutes, says Jay. “We reverse the process and haul the bride and groom back up to the top and clean off our anchors. We are usually done an hour or so after sunrise. Since most of our clients are not climbers we use techniques so that they never have to be responsible for ever touching anything. We handle all the raises, lowers and anchoring. It really is a lot safer than it looks the way we do it, especially with the incredible skill and experience Marc has.” Although it seems unbelievable, the only issue that has arisen has been the weather. Laughs Jay, “Unfortunately we don’t have much control over that!”

A Perfect Match Finding Your Wedding Officiant

S

Beautiful Today ...

By Jo Maden, LifeCycle Celebrant™

electing that just-right officiant for your wedding day is a task worthy of some moments of careful consideration. Your wedding officiant is someone you are placing your trust in and the person who will set the tone for your ceremony. Wedding officiants vary as much in style, skill, experience and personality as each couple planning their wedding and embarking on the wonderful adventure of marriage. Many articles have been written and blogs posted about choosing an officiant and any couple seeking a list of interview questions can find one. However, I would encourage you to ask yourself some important questions. This will help guide you toward the best match for your wedding officiant. ~ Are we casual or formal people? Hugs or Handshakes? How do we want to connect with our officiant? ~ There is no checklist for chemistry. Read reviews and gather testimonials as much as you can, but the best measure of whether your officiant is the perfect match for you is your own instincts. ~ Do we expect regular check-ins from our officiant or do we plan to just see them on the wedding day? Are we super organized or pretty relaxed? ~ Prior to your interview, seek out information on an officiant’s professional practices: credentials, client reviews, reliability, experience, venue referrals, signed contract, rehearsal or no rehearsal. ~ Do we want to collaborate and have input on the tone or specific elements of our ceremony or would we rather be presented with a ceremony and given a few choices to select? ~ Some ceremony professionals such as Certified LifeCycle Celebrants™ create an original ceremony for and with you. ~ Some professional officiants and clergy will integrate personal details and offer options for you to choose ~ others offer a standard template with limited options. ~ Are we religious? Spiritual? Do we know? Is it important to either or both of us that our beliefs or practices be reflected in the ceremony? ~ If you are a religious person getting married in a setting that precludes your clergy from performing the ceremony or if you would like to integrate faith-based language from multiple traditions into your ceremony, then look for an ordained interfaith minister or celebrant with client reviews that speak to this concern. ~ Quirky? Outdoorsy? Themed or costumed wedding? Pets in the wedding party? Chair lift to the ceremony? Do we want to incorporate any of our hobbies, interests or favorite place into our ceremony? ~ Most LifeCycle Celebrants™ and other professional officiants will work within your desired themes and special requests. If you have a ceremony location that requires unique access (e.g. chair lift, horseback) or you require specific attire (e.g. costume rental) be sure to share that information in your initial inquiry. Whether you work from a list of interview questions or speak from the heart, what is most important is to trust yourself and your partner; together you will find the right wedding officiant for your special day and it will be another perfect match.

Kaitlynn & Reed

Date of engagement: 5/12/12; Date of wedding: 10/2/15 Getting married lakeside in October can be warm and sunny...or a bit chilly. Says bride Kaitlynn, “As New Englanders, we knew there was a possibility that it could be unusually warm, a typical fall day, or even snowing on our wedding day. On our wedding day it was a cool 55º, but we couldn’t have been happier with how the beach, lake and sky looked that day. “The ceremony took place at Ellacoya State Park (beach) in Gilford. We wanted to incorporate the lake into our wedding venue, and have always enjoyed Ellacoya beach. It was an easy decision to reserve the beach for an intimate lakeside ceremony. We were as close to the water as you could get without swimming in it!” The couple reserved the on-site pavilion in case of rain. “The park staff were easy to work with, especially considering we were using the park two days before it closed for the season. “An unusually strong storm happened two nights before, and left debris along the beach and sand washed away where we planned to do the cermony,” Kaitlynn recalls. Her brother and Dad raked the sand back into place. (Lesson learned from that curve ball is to embrace the unexpected and have help on standby near the big day.) The wedding guest list was small, and Kaitlynn explains, “Neither of us envisioned or desired having a large affair. We wanted the day to be an intimate one that felt like we were able to truly connect with each other, while still sharing it with our families. That sense of romance was achieved, while still feeling like we had a traditional wedding.” The couple planned the wedding together, choosing Ellacoya Barn and Grille (right down the road from the beach) as the reception site. “We love the restaurant for its cozy, rustic atmosphere, and delicious food and drinks,” Kaitlynn adds. Ellacoya Barn and Grille catered, with the menu including a barn salad and option of filet mignon, Gorgonzola chicken, walnut encrusted salmon, Tuscan linguini, and seafood fra Diablo. Appetizers were crab cakes, pulled pork flatbread, spinach and artichoke dip, vegetable crudités and bacon wrapped scallops. The birch tree designed wedding cake had a top layer of chocolate and chocolate with raspberry on the bottom layer with white butter cream frosting throughout. Choosing Eric McCallister Photography was an easy decision for the couple. Kaitlynn explains, “The photographer is what makes a wedding come to life for those not in attendance, and the memories last forever. Eric is the kind of photographer who can capture more than an image. He emphasizes all the greatest points from the wedding day by capturing the details and he makes you feel at ease during the photography session.” The Wedding Professionals Florist: Heaven Scent Design, Laconia, NH

s a native of the Lakes Region, Brandy kept her wedding close to home, featuring the places and things that are special to her. The couple (Brandy and Michael) had the epitome of a rustic country wedding so popular these days. Their ceremony was held at the Maple Street Church in the village of Barnstead. (“My grandmother drove me to the church,” Brandy recalls.) Seventy-five guests helped the couple celebrate at the Inn on Main Street in Wolfeboro in the barn-like function space. Says Brandy, “The building itself has some beautiful features; a rock bar, a beautiful fireplace, exposed beams, and it matched our vintage theme.” Magic Foods Catering offered Mini Quiches, Greek Spanakopita, asparagus tips wrapped in asiago cheese puff pastry, and mini crab cakes. Dinner was buffet style with herb roasted chicken, grilled steak tips and baked haddock. Side options were Red Bliss mashed potatoes, rice pilaf and green beans and a traditional Caesar salad and spinach salad. Guests dined and danced and helped make the couple’s wedding the perfect country, rustic day they had envisioned. “My favorite parts of the day were kissing my groom and finally walking down the aisle and holding my Dad’s arm and getting to feel so much love from friends and family - I felt the most beautiful at those two points,” recalls Brandy. Brandy’s advice to other brides-to-be: “Do what you want, no matter how crazy it seems. Your style and decorations and food options all should be what you and your spouse love most! Your friends and family will love how much of yourselves you put into it. If anything seems like it might be wrong, don’t stress about it because it’s the best day of your life no matter what!”

Amanda and Nick Date of engagement: June 12, 2013 Date of wedding: October 3, 2015 It’s a wonderful Lakes Region wedding story: the bride-to-be summered in the area and loved it. She went to college in NH (UNH) and the groom-to-be, when introduced to the area by his fiancee, fell in love with the beauty of the region. They had to get married in this special place, and as Amanda explains, “We were very excited for our friends and family to experience the autumn beauty of the Lakes Region.” One of the prettiest places in the Lakes Region is the summit of Gunstock in Gilford. “Gunstock has a great outdoor adventure vibe that we wanted to share with our friends and family. We took our bridal party zip-lining on Gunstock’s 1.6 mile zip line the day before the wedding (so much fun!). And, we used running trails around the base for the Wedding Day 5K. We also liked the adventure of all the guests riding the chair lift for the summit ceremony.”

Coppertoppe hosts intimate weddings or elopements indoors year

A mountaintop wedding in the fall can be chilly, but the couple had that covered too. “When we saw the weather was going to be chilly, my sister (matron of honor) went out to find blankets for the chair lift ride up the mountain… she found them at Walmart and knew we would appreciate the camo pattern!” (The couple are both Army officers - Nick is a Major; Amanda is a Captain in the Army National Guard.)

The Wedding Day 5K was a fun part of the wedding. “On the morning of the wedding we held a Wedding Day 5K on trails around the base of Gunstock Mountain and invited our guests to join us. We enjoy running together and with our dog ‘Brooks.’ We thought a morning fun run with some friendly competition would be a great way to get energized for the day!” (These fun and unique races are becoming a wedding trend.) Guests rode the chairlift to the Summit and watched the couple exchange vows in the breathtaking setting. The reception was held in the lodge at Gunstock. The menu consisted of “Black-Diamond” Salad, Butternut Squash and Apple Soup, Oven Roasted Chicken Breast with Cranberry Stuffing, Spinach and Feta Ravioli, Carved Prime Rib of Beef with Au Jus, Roasted Red Bliss Potatoes and Seasonal Mixed Vegetables. cont. on pg. 49

Wintery Wedding Elegance

Winter weddings are cozy with indoor fireplaces to ward off the chill, elegant and heavier table linens in sumptuous fabrics and colors and florals that combine natural and rustic with elegant. This is the season for deeper colors of gold, shimmery fabrics and woodsy green hues. Gowns sparkle and hairstyles and makeup are more dramatic.

Alissa & Matt Date of engagement: November, 2013 Date of wedding: June 6, 2015

Alissa and Matt had a glorious lakeside wedding in Wolfeboro, NH and with the help of Signature Events (and owner Amy Piper), the day was perfect. Says Alissa, “I planned the wedding from Massachusetts, so I was only a few hours away. The main reason I worked with Amy was because it was a tented event, that would have to have everything brought in, and that isn’t something I felt capable of planning without help from an expert! When I decided on getting married in Wolfeboro, my parents suggested Signature Events because of Amy’s knowledge, expertise and experience in planning events in the area.” The style of the wedding, according to Alissa, was “country chic” with colors of navy and blush. Special touches included a fun vintage Chevy truck. Alissa explains, “My husband has always wanted a vintage Chevy truck. When I was planning the wedding, I told Amy that I would love to surprise him with a truck that he could drive to the reception or that we could use at some point during the day. Amy knew of someone who would let us borrow his vintage truck for pictures and they came out pretty awesome.” cont. on pg. 57

cont. from pg. 41 To help bring the wedding together seamlessly, the couple enlisted the help of Private Wedding and Events. Says owner/lead planner Mindy Rossignol, “Amanda and Nick choose a Navy blue and yellow color palette for their fall wedding at Gunstock. When designing the wedding we wanted to keep with the rustic feel of the lodge and add vintage elements. When I saw the Navy blue lace dresses Amanda chose for her bridesmaids, I knew lace runners would be the perfect addition to the dining tables along with silver mercury glass votives and vases. We brought in rustic farm tables and dark chairs to enrich the wood elements of the lodge. Faux burlap napkins, real tree slices, wildflower bouquets and centerpieces by Lotus Floral Designs added the perfect rustic touches, bringing everything together! Adding in the couples personal favorites of pies, Moscow Mules and mountains to the desserts, drinks and wedding stationary helped make this wedding truly theirs!

Emily and Eric Date of Engagement: June 13, 2014 Date of Wedding: August 1, 2015

Eric and Emily grew up in New England. “New Hampshire for me, and Maine for Eric,” says Emily. “From the start of our relationship, we have loved spending time outdoors together: hiking, skiing, the beach. On one of our first dates we hiked Cardigan Mountain in the dead of winter. I think that’s when I knew we’d make a good team. Outdoors is where you’ll find us anytime of year; it was important to us to pick a venue that reflected our passions. The Fells (in the Sunapee region) was a location my Mom heard about from a friend. The house, grounds and gardens have amazing history and were the perfect fit for us.” The couple planned the wedding together, with the help of “our amazing family and friends, Pinterest research, and lots of luck!” Emily adds. There was no set wedding theme, “though one of our guests described it as the ‘perfect garden party,’ which seemed like a good fit! Our colors were mint, gold and neutrals.” The guest count was 125 and the dinner was prepared by Duck Soup Catering. Emily says, “Our menu was Mediterranean white fish, cumin crusted pork, and a vegetable lasagna. We kept it simple for appetizers with local cheese, bruschetta, and fresh fruits. We chose to have a small cutting cake for us and cupcakes for our guests. We like the more relaxed feel of the cupcakes; we had salted caramel, double chocolate and a chocolate raspberry.” Concerning an outdoor wedding, Emily says, “Choosing an outdoor venue was a bit stressful at times. I certainly checked the weather forecast obsessively as the tent was our only back-up plan! Little did we know, the light rain on our day made for some amazing photographs.” The bride’s advice for others planning a wedding: “Though everyone will tell you this, I can’t say it enough—DON’T stress. There will be many things that are in your control—plan for those. There will be many things that are out of your control— don’t let these consume your excitement and joy. Be flexible, let others help you, and remember that at the end of the day this day is about starting a wonderful journey together.” The Wedding Vendors Tent/chairs/table rentals: Lakes Region Tent & Event Cupcakes: Dazzle Cupcakes DJ: Get Down Tonight Entertainment Flowers: “We chose to do our own floral arrangements for our wedding. My brother-in-law handmade flower boxes for each table. They were beautiful, and we wanted the flowers inside to reflect his creativity. My family and closest girlfriends drove to Cedar Hill Farm in Vermont and did a pick-your-own.” Caterer: Duck Soup Francine Gown: BHLDN Hair and makeup: Just Paradise, Lebanon NH Make-Up: done with the help of Emily’s brother’s girlfriend, Katie Photography: Clifford Photography. “We heard about Clifford Photography from a friend and after looking through their work fell in love with their creativity and style!” Officiant: Alex Grintsvayg

Gown Guide

(above) Gown by Maggie Sottero available at Country Bridals

Bohemian? Ballgown? A-line? Lace? Get ready to have the shopping trip of a lifetime when you step into NH’s bridal shops. You will find a huge variety of gowns in different styles and fabrics. One tip before shopping for your gown - call ahead to make an appointment at bridal shops. It will allow the shop staff to set aside a time that is just for you and to devote to helping you find your perfect wedding gown.

It seems the choices have never been greater when it comes to wedding gowns. Says Helen Dionne, owner of A Day to Remember Bridal Boutique in Concord, NH and Uniquely Couture in Bedford, NH, “A-line and trumpet style silhouettes still remain the most popular styles. We still see a lot of lace, but satin is making a comeback.” She adds, “We are seeing more brides opt for some color. Blush is HUGE! We are also seeing ivory lace over champagne or gold satin, which really makes the lace ‘pop.’ ” At Country Bridals and Formal Wear in Jaffrey, NH, gowns are offered in many styles. (above) Gown by Maggie Sottero available at Country Bridals Says shop owner Cathy Furze, “There has been a turn this year where brides are looking for straps. Lace with a vintage feel and light and airy tulle with a bohemian flair. Brides are searching for fun styling in the gown they are choosing. Bridal gowns with champagne and blush colors are becoming very trendy. Combinations of ivory over light gold or champagne.” “We have actually been seeing a rise in ball gowns again with our brides,” says Caitlin Baldwin, owner of Inspirations Bridal and Formal Wear in North Conway, NH. “While A-line is always a favorite no matter the trend, fuller, tulle skirts have started to catch bride’s eyes. We’ve also started seeing more fun, textured bottoms. Lace continues to be hugely popular with our girls. Our designers have been coming out with some very different and intricate lace patterns, giving girls more options to choose from. Champagnes, nudes and other off-white colors continue to gain popularity.” And what about the seemingly timeless style of the strapless gown? Is that trend changing? According to Caitlin of Inspirations Bridal, “While strapless will always be a timeless classic, we have seen brides wanting a little more. Whether it’s a low, unique back or an illusion neckline, girls are wanting their wedding gown to show off their personality.” A veil or no veil? A BoHo floral crown vs. a traditional headpiece? Choices in headpieces also are many. Says Helen Dionne of A Day to Remember and Uniquely Couture, “Birdcages seem to have lost a bit of their flair, and most brides are opting for the more traditional veil.” At Country Bridals, owner Cathy Furze offers, “We find that decorative clips that accent the gown are the choice of most brides; veils are mostly single layers.” “Veils continue to remain a staple for our brides and they are really favoring cathedral length to accent the details on the backs of their dresses. Adding a pop of sparkle with a beaded headband is popular to pull off any look. Flowers and tulle hair pieces are coming out in the champagnes, blushes and nudes to help match the variations in gown colors we’re seeing,” adds Caitlin of Inspirations Bridal. 54 LAKES REGION BRIDE

Bridesmaid’s gowns are full of style and sparkle in 2016. Helen Dionne explains, “The biggest new trend in bridesmaids is all-over sequin dresses. Sorella Vita (a division of Essense of Australia) introduced these dresses last season and they have been a huge hit. Not everyone is copying them.”

“We continue to see brides having a little more fun with their bridal party by having girls pick their own styles or mixing up colors among the maids. Sequins hit the racks last year and continue to be popular. Lace accented bridesmaids have been great for girls wanting to tie the style in with their gown.” — Caitlin Baldwin, Inspirations Bridal “We continue to see brides having a little more fun with their bridal party by having girls pick their own styles or mixing up colors among the maids. Sequins hit the racks last year and continue to be popular. Lace accented bridesmaids have been great for girls wanting to tie the style in with their gown,” says Caitlin of Inspirations Bridal. “Blush shades and grey shades are still trending,” adds Cathy Furze of Country Bridals, speaking of bridesmaid’s gowns.

cont. from pg. 48 Alissa’s advice for others planning a wedding: “If you have room in your budget, I would highly recommend using a wedding planner. It was very helpful to have a pre-established timeline and checklist provided by Amy (of Signature Events) to be sure nothing was missed. While parents, family and friends are always very helpful, I never would have been able to juggle all of the moving parts without a planner. There are hundreds of decisions that need to be made for any wedding. If you choose an outdoor tented wedding, those decisions multiply and it was helpful to have an expert to provide suggestions while allowing me to focus on the final choices. I don’t think I realized how many decisions I would actually have to make since our wedding wasn’t a package that a traditional wedding venue offers. Everything from the style of tent all the way down to the flatware/glasses were final decisions I had to make.” The food was an important part of the celebration,

and Alissa explains, “The day after we got engaged, we went out for celebratory drinks with some friends who were married. They told us to each pick three things to focus on that we cared about the most for our wedding. We both ended up picking the same three things – food, music and an open bar. Since food was one of the main things we focused on for the wedding day, we wanted to make sure it was really good and there was a lot of it! We are really into farm-to-table dining, and my husband is a big foodie, so we ended up going with Flavor Concepts Catering from Dover, NH. The food was amazing! Our friends (140 guests) are still raving about our cocktail hour options. We had a huge Tapas station, a Regional Artisanal Cheese and Charcuterie station, and a lot of passed appetizers. Once seated, we had a Caprese Salad of heirloom tomatoes and burrata cheese to start, and then guests had the option of HoneyGlazed Roasted Chicken or Pan-Roasted Seared cont. on pg. 58

Focus on Flowers

with Sara Severance, CFD

Your Boho-Chic Bouquet: The Look vs. The Price When I think of a trending bridal bouquet, I immediately think of the loose, full, flowing, sometimes cascading look of the hand-tied bouquet most commonly described by brides as Victorian or Bohemian. Although these two historic design concepts and ways of life mean somewhat opposite things in many senses, both of these as current wedding style ideas lead me to think of voluminous garden blooms combined with lush foliages tied with ribbon in a way that is soft and romantic. These bouquets tend to feel less planned and structured; they seem as if fresh picked and assembled at the spur of the moment. The idea of such a large bouquet defines Victorian era weddings as a sign of opulence, wealth and elaborate ornamentation—I think of photos from my grandmother’s wedding. With the traditional Bohemian bride, it represents freedom, eclectic beauty, devotion and overflowing romance more than anything else. Today’s bride takes from both concepts combining the traditional Victorian garden style in a collection that is spontaneous, fresh and seasonal. Flowers are a big part of your bridal style, and I love creating the perfect bouquet for my bride. When couples show me inspirational photos from their online boards, I know that capturing the look is always the most important thing! This wonderful style of bouquet can incorporate many different varieties of flowers. Take both of the bouquets shown here; both feature popular wedding flowers, some of which you may know and some that are new to you. Both capture the look, but one is significantly more expensive than the other. If you’re considering this lush, large style bouquet, being open to a wide variety of flowers may help you with cost. Every couple has a budget no matter how big or small, and with some thought, it is very possible to keep a budget that seems appropriate to your unique event and get the look! Always ask your florist for suggestions of alternate flowers that best suit your individual style. You never know which you may prefer!

Wedding Decorating with Rentals courtesy Lakes Region Tent

Today, when decorating a wedding, selecting from the myriad of rental items can be almost as overwhelming as finding “the” wedding dress. From rustic to traditional, there are more styles and choices of rental items than ever before. Here are some helpful tips to determine what you need and what will work best. Assess Your Needs Depending on where you are hosting your wedding, you may need to supply everything—chairs, tables, linens, generator, tent, etc. If you are working with a full-service venue, they may supply all the basics; however, you may decide their items do not fit your wedding style. If this is the case, find out first if your venue will charge you for replacing their items and if so, determine if it is worth the extra cost. Websites and wedding planning magazines are great resources for finding rental checklists. If you are working with an experienced rental vendor, they will mention rental items you may not have thought of, such as tent sidewalls in case it is cold or rains. cont. from pg. 60 Determine Your Style With Pinterest and numerous wedding websites, you have an almost endless supply of decorating ideas to fuel your own wedding design. Whatever theme you set your sights on, from rustic chic to beachy to vintage romantic, you can enhance the setting with the rentals you choose. For example, rustic chic continues to be a popular theme and many rental providers are responding with rustic farm tables, complimentary wood chairs and wine barrel bars. Even the popular ballroom chairs (often referred to as Chiavari chairs) are available in a wide range of colors, including white, gold, fruitwood and even black. Keep in mind that most rental companies will not carry every color variation of a particular chair and may have a limited variety of rental item styles. While you can always get the look you want by renting from numerous rental companies, each will charge you for delivery—an added expense that may not be worth it. Go Basic for Big, Get Creative with Small

Bharat Parmar Photography

There are now specialty rental companies offering a variety of eclectic items, such as vintage china, colored glassware and specialty linens. Even Adirondack chairs and leather sofas can be rented for events. While these items will be less expensive to rent than to buy, the number of specialty items available can make it easy to get carried away—and blow your budget. A good rule of thumb is less is more. A few well-chosen specialty items your guests will actually touch may be worth the dollars, rather than splurging on making every item unique.

Spend Wisely

62 LAKES REGION BRIDE

It is important to keep to a budget, but equally important you do not scrimp on items that matter most. For example, trying to save a few bucks by renting a too small tent or dance floor usually results in guests being uncomfortable— a mood that will overshadow those beautiful details you felt you had to have. If you anticipate a cool night or rain, make sure you heed your rental company’s advice and reserve a heater and sidewalls—these are items rarely available the day of an event. If you do find your budget strained, do not hesitate to ask your rental provider for advice on ways to cut costs—they want your wedding day to be perfect and are always happy to help you get creative.

Cake/Cupcakes: La Boca Bakery Band: Eye 2 Eye A word on the eclectic, antique china that adorned the tables: “I wanted the wedding to be simple. At first I didn’t like the idea of vintage china, but as things started to come together, I worried there wasn’t enough color and the tables could be boring if I used white china. Boston Rustic Wedding Rentals actually has mismatched china and I thought the Rosewood Flatware they rent was perfect with it,” Alissa explains. Ceremony site/officiant: Says Alissa, “We decided to get married in my parents’ backyard. It was a lastminute decision; my parents spent all spring preparing the yard for the event. We prayed for no rain – and buried a bottle of bourbon – and it worked! I’m so happy we made that decision! Getting married under the old apple tree, where I played when I was little, was so meaningful. Matt’s cousin, Karen, married us.” A wedding ceremony in a personal setting, such as a special spot at a private home, is very meaningful. Alissa and Matt truly had the best of both worlds - a joyous ceremony at the bride’s childhood home and a memorable reception by the lake.

As a wedding DJ for over 25 years, I find it disappointing that there is so much misinformation on the web about hiring a qualified wedding disc jockey. Your DJ touches at least 80% of your day. He/she will be the reason your guests leave early or rage all night. They are the voice, music and attitude of your wedding. Be prepared to hire the best one that you can afford for your once-in-a-lifetime experience. A great one will completely care about you, your family and guests and make memories for years to come. An “OK” DJ will do none of that. A bad wedding DJ could end up in a YouTube parody. Here is some advice to make it easier to find the right match of talent, experience and professionalism to ensure a memorable event for all. 1) Do your research. All DJs are NOT the same. Some couples hire all their vendors in one week to get it out of the way. Take your time to research your DJ. There is no license needed to do this. Back in the day, a DJ had to invest $2,000+ in records to play out at a gig. Now people can be up and running in a weekend with a copied hard drive to play music. Someone dropping off something you bought or rented for the wedding holds a different level of importance than the person that is going to execute your event from start to finish ‘live’ on your big day. The best way to find a great DJ for your wedding (and you need a great one) is to ask friends, venues and vendors. Don’t be fooled by people that say their DJ is “a great guy!” Most people in this business are pleasant. Not all of them can rock a crowd with five generations of people and 20 different genres of music. Research them, check their sites, their social media posts and their review sites. When you are checking reviews, be sure to check WeddingWire.com. It’s a respected national site with great tools, very reputable and has great screening features. DJ’s Tip – Click the drop down labeled “sort by.” Select “rating lowest.” This will show you their worst experiences out there, and how they handled them. Some DJs will have videos of themselves here or on their website. These are very important, as you get to see who they really are in videos, instead of who they portray themselves to be. Add all the DJs you like to your list to reach out to. 2) Don’t get caught up on price. You are probably going to spend north of $25,000 when it is all said and done on your wedding no matter what you skimp on. If you have family helping with that, you are in great shape. Don’t skimp on the DJ. As mentioned above, a great DJ does not show

up with a laptop full of music and just play your favorite songs from the radio. They get to know you, your fiancé, the type of people you are inviting to the wedding, and they build a script with music that takes you through a few different journeys during your day. If you hire the right one, there will still be plenty of cont. on pg. 70

people at the end of the night dancing with you until your last dance. Often I hear couples saying that they are paying for things themselves and they have a budget of “$XXX”. Some blogs and wedding magazines will give you advice on what to spend on a DJ, but only you can figure out what you can afford. Some couples will skimp on other things to have a great DJ. After it’s all said and done, when you are spending $25k, don’t get caught up over trying to save a few hundred dollars. Your guests will thank you for it. One more important note - use your “venue recommended” list very cautiously. Some venues put their best vendors on this list at no charge, because they consistently make the venue and staff look good by doing a great job. Other venues institute a “pay to play” list and sacrifice quality for profit when they are making their recommendations.

great DJ

The best way to find a for your wedding (and you need a great one) is to

ask friends, venues and vendors.

3) Schedule a visit to meet your DJ at their office. In my opinion, every professional wedding DJ worthy of your consideration should offer their couples an honest, detailed conversation. I can’t stress how important a face to face, or face to video meeting is. Not every DJ is a match for every couple. Talent and professionalism is most important. Business acumen, getting along with other vendors, the responsiveness of their emails – all these factors should play a role in your decision. You find out a lot from a conversation and a meeting. If you cannot meet in person, (if you live in another state, etc.) your DJ should have some professional (i.e. not free, like Skype) video conferencing tools to make it easy on you. Ask a lot of questions about different parts of the wedding that are important to you. Do you want an MC that sounds like a pro wrestling announcer? Does he/she get anxious when they talk to you? Are they trying to be too funny? All of these attributes will be magnified when you let them loose with a microphone in front of your friends and family. Make sure they ask a lot of questions too. That proves they care about you and your wishes, and are not there to just brag about how great they are. Some DJs do 50 unique wedding celebrations a year, and other DJs do the same wedding 50 times a year. Meeting face to face will help you decide who is going to be your advocate for your day, because you need one! 4) Ensure a contract is in place. Is the feeling there that you have a great match of personality, experience and that

the DJ understands your needs? Great; secure the deal. You can take your time to decide, but be aware there are over 8,000 weddings a year in NH and good DJ companies get inquiries almost every day. Most Djs will not hold a date without a contract and deposit. If you’ve made your decision, you don’t want to risk that your DJ gets booked for the same date by another couple that pulls the trigger immediately. Let them know you’ve chosen them and are ready to move forward. Also, ensure the DJ you want is named specifically on the contract to avoid a bait and switch move. Ok, now exhale, you’re done! Hopefully you’ve taken some of my advice and found the perfect wedding DJ for your big day. Your wedding DJ is one of the most important decisions you’ll make, and now you can start to envision a rocking, full dance floor!
