Officer's Message

Dear Lakeside Members,

Spring is always a busy and exciting time around Lakeside and I’d like to highlight a few recent notable events while thanking the incredible teams across the Club— including Golf & Grounds, Tennis, Fitness, Pool & Youth, Catering, Dining, Banquets, Kitchen staff, and Communications— for their dedication in making each event a success: a Lakeside favorite, the Easter Egg Hunt and Brunch, Wine Walk, Round Top trip, Member Member Tournament (congrats Vann Vandervoort and Eric Otness), Lakeside Cup (congrats David Butts and his son-in-law partner Chuck Helms), and the popular Crawfish Boil at the pool

May continues the momentum with a full calendar, including the Ladies Tee Cup, Mother’s Day Brunch, Graduation Brunch, and our Memorial Day Celebration at the pool . With the school year coming to a close, summer is upon us so get your young ones registered for Swim Team, sign up for Summer Youth Camp beginning June 9th and keep an eye out for our Wednesday night Summer Bingo games and more

It is an honor and privilege to serve Lakeside as a board member I’d like to thank fellow board members Jim Allred and Mike Allen for their time, effort, dedication and insight over the past few years . Please see below for some words from each of them .

As I conclude my term on the Board of Directors this August, I want to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for the opportunity to serve this great Club and its Membership It has been a privilege to work alongside such a dedicated group of fellow Board members, all committed to preserving and enhancing the traditions, character, and future of our Club . The experience has given me a deeper appreciation for what makes this place so special—not just the facilities or amenities, but the people who bring it to life

I want to express my sincere appreciation to each of you for your support, engagement, and dedication to making Lakeside the outstanding community it is . Whether through your participation in Club events, your valuable feedback, or simply by being the welcoming and spirited members that define our Club, you have made this journey both meaningful and enjoyable .

CLUB NEWS

The camaraderie and shared commitment to our Club’s traditions and future have been truly inspiring .

I would also like to extend my heartfelt compliments to our exceptional staff, led by Casey Newman . From the moment you arrive on the grounds, their professionalism, warmth, and attention to detail are evident The golf and maintenance teams keep our course running smoothly and our facilities in impeccable condition, the Clubhouse and Dining Staff consistently deliver outstanding service with genuine care, and every department works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our Club runs smoothly and feels like a true home away from home . Their dedication, expertise, and positive attitudes greatly enhance the experience for all of us, and they deserve our sincere thanks and recognition .

Serving on the Board has been both rewarding and enlightening . I am confident that the Club is well-positioned for continued success, and I look forward to enjoying all that it offers as a member in the years ahead

Jim Allred, Treasurer

As my time on the Board of Directors comes to an end, I am filled with gratitude for the incredibly meaningful experience it has been . Serving on the Board was truly an honor, and one that I will always cherish . It allowed me to give back to a place that has been such an important part of my life and my family’s story for many years .

The importance of the Board’s role cannot be overstated, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have served alongside such a thoughtful, committed group of individuals Beyond the work itself, what I will miss most is the camaraderie—the honest conversations, the shared laughter, and the collective desire to do what is right for the Club Even during challenging discussions, there was always a common thread: a genuine love for Lakeside . That mutual respect and shared commitment give me great confidence in the Club’s leadership and its future .

I also want to personally thank the incredible team that brings Lakeside to life every day . Under Casey’s steady, thoughtful leadership as General Manager, excellence is not just a goal—it is a daily standard felt throughout the Club . To the Golf Staff, thank you for creating a welcoming, first class experience on the course and fostering a love of the game for members of all ages To the Dining Team, thank you for the countless meals, celebrations, and moments you make special through your care, hospitality, and attention to detail . To the Fitness Staff, thank you for helping members stay healthy, motivated, and connected through every stage of life . To the Facilities and Maintenance teams, your tireless work—often done early mornings, late nights, and behind the scenes—ensures that our Club is safe, beautiful, and something we are always proud to call our home away from home And to every staff member whose work may not always be visible, please know that your dedication, professionalism, and commitment are deeply appreciated . Lakeside simply would not be what it is without each of you .

Being a member of Lakeside for 25 years has allowed me to witness not just change, but progress built on resilience . I’ve watched the Club evolve with a new clubhouse, pool, fitness center, and a beautifully transformed golf course—each improvement reflecting thoughtful investment in the member experience . The moment that stands out most, however, was Hurricane Harvey . At the time, the flooding felt devastating, and it was hard to imagine sitting in the "Tent" how the Club could recover Yet in true Lakeside fashion, the unimaginable became possible What emerged from that difficult chapter was a stronger, better Club and a powerful reminder of just how resilient this community truly is .

On a personal level, Lakeside has been woven into the fabric of my family’s life . Some of my closest friendships were formed here, and many of our favorite memories were made on these grounds . Watching my children grow up through swim team and summer camps—forming friendships of their own—has been incredibly special . Those experiences are part of who they are today, and they are memories our family will always treasure

Thank you to the membership for the trust you placed in me, to the staff for the heart you pour into this Club, and to my fellow Board members for the friendships and shared sense of purpose . Lakeside Country Club is not just a Club—it is a community, a tradition and a constant in our lives . I am deeply grateful for the past 25 years and look forward to being part of this special place for many years to come .

The Lakeside Youth Program

Since its earliest days, Lakeside Country Club has been more than a place to gather—it has been a place to grow up For generations of families, the Lakeside Youth Program has served as a cornerstone of summer memories, friendships, and traditions that continue to shape the Club’s identity today .

Even before the program’s formal founding, youth activities were already taking shape . As early as 1952, Lakeside boasted a junior swim team, setting a standard of excellence that continues today .

The program officially began in 1955, when the Women’s Association recognized an opportunity to create something truly special for the children of Lakeside . Under the leadership of Mrs . Melvin Langridge, and with Mae Bourgois as the first director, the Youth Program launched with 94 enthusiastic campers From the very beginning, it was clear this was no ordinary camp—it was a thoughtfully designed experience built with intention, care, and a deep love for children

Mrs Langridge, a trained physical education teacher with a background in psychology, poured her heart into the program . With a dedicated staff and the support of mothers who volunteered as hostesses, the camp quickly flourished Early activities ranged from tennis, golf, and swimming to archery, canoeing, horseback riding, and even skeet shooting . While times have changed, the spirit of adventure and well-rounded programming remains at the core of the Lakeside experience

Throughout the decades, the program evolved alongside the Club itself . Daily traditions also took root early on, with each morning at camp beginning with a flag raising and the Pledge of Allegiance—a ritual that carried on for decades, instilling a sense of unity and pride in generations of campers .

By the 1970s, participation had surpassed 100 campers, and the Swim Team had become a defining feature of summer at Lakeside The program entered a period of remarkable athletic success, highlighted by an undefeated season in 1972 and sustained dominance throughout the 1980s and 1990s Today, more than 185 families take part in the Lakeside Summer Youth Program and Swim Team, carrying forward a tradition that continues to define summer at the Club

One thing has remained constant: the Lakeside Youth Program is about more than activities . It is about connection—to the Club, to one another, and to a shared legacy . It is where lifelong friendships are formed, confidence is built, and traditions are passed down from one generation to the next

Today, the Lakeside Youth Program remains a defining part of the Club experience—bridging generations through tradition, connection, and the shared joy of growing up at Lakeside

RACQUETS From the Courts

Where are you trying to place the ball?

So often in club tennis, players have no idea about their shot groupings . Shot grouping is the collective pattern of multiple consecutive shots aimed at a target, used to measure a hitter’s consistency (precision) . It helps you understand how wide your shots can be when aiming at something as simple as a cone on the court

As an example, I had Max Lawrence, one of our pros, hit 20 balls at a cone . I allowed Max to choose his most consistent shot (backhand slice), and I let him dictate how and where he wanted the feed I wanted him to be as comfortable and confident as possible . It’s important to understand that Max is an ex-D1 college tennis player who is elite at the sport and a very consistent hitter

The target I placed was about 6½ feet from the alley line and halfway between the baseline and service line . This is a large, high-percentage target

Max’s results:

Balls that landed within 1 foot or less: 0

Balls that landed within 3 feet or less: 6

Balls that landed within 4½ feet or less: 14

Balls that landed outside 4½ feet: 6

(Photo to the right)

If Max—an ex-D1 player—is keeping most of his shots within 4½ feet of his intended target, how far off is your shot grouping?

I see far too many club players aiming way too close to the lines, then wondering why some days their shots are amazing and other days everything goes out

RACQUETS

From the Courts continued...

If I moved Max’s target just 3 feet closer to the alley line, based on his grouping, about half of his shots would have gone out .

That’s why having a large, high-percentage target is key—it gives you room for error .

Too many times I hear players say, “Oh, he/she didn’t mean to hit there— they just got lucky ” In reality, we can assume most club players have about a 6-foot spread around their intended target If you aim at a safer target— say 6½ feet from the alley—you’ll miss less, and your mishits will often turn into winners

I challenge all of you to learn your shot groupings and base your targets on that . When you play higher-percentage tennis, your errors start turning into opportunities .

FITNESS

Fitness Tip of the Month

So what do YOU do?

As Director of Fitness, I am routinely asked questions about exercise, nutrition, lifestyle, supplements etc . This is sometimes followed by, “So what do you do?” This article will serve as a general account of my daily activities and lifestyle habits as they pertain to health and wellness .

During the week, my alarm goes off between 345-415am . On the weekend this can range from 5-7am Gratitude journaling and the word of the day are done before my morning supplements The morning supplements are fish oil, turmeric/curcumin, DHEA, pregnenolone, lower dose of magnesium bisglycinate, Vitamin D3/K2 and a daily essentials supplement from Thorne that I use for a variety of reasons The majority of these are used based on bloodwork results . Monday through Friday I lift weights and will consume a whey protein drink about 90 min before that contains 30g of protein, ~5g creatine monohydrate, ~5g glutamine and 1 TBSP of chia seeds . Along with this I have 2 bananas . This is to help fuel the workout, bananas are just my personal preference Before I begin the workout, I consume another drink that contains citrulline malate, beta alanine and caffeine . This is a very simplified version of a “pre-workout” that helps promote blood flow, muscle fiber recruitment and energy The workouts typically last around 60-90 min depending on the day and target different muscles groups, planes of movement and movement styles to help keep myself well rounded Most days I also consume a packet of LMNT electrolytes during my workout to hydrate and help replace what I lose through sweat . Post workout another drink is consumed that contains 40g whey protein, ~50g carbohydrate, ~5g creatine monohydrate, ~5g glutamine and 1 TBSP of chia seeds The chia seeds are used to increase my overall daily fiber intake .

Meals during the week are standard . I will bring either 16 oz grilled chicken breast or beef patties along with a bowl full of plain baked

FITNESS

Fitness Tip of the Month continued...

potatoes for my lunch(es) The majority of this is prepped on Sunday This will provide mainly protein and carbohydrate, and another fish oil gel will be consumed with it Last year I had a reverse osmosis water system installed at my house and I bring a gallon of that water in a stainless-steel vessel with me to work to stay hydrated .

Dinner is typically chicken, beef, fish or eggs, and my current vegetable is broccoli florets with some olive oil and salt There is usually a side of fermented food such as sauerkraut or kim chi as well . If I am still hungry, as I often am, “Too Good” Greek yogurt will be my after-dinner option . A higher dose of magnesium bisglycinate is taken ideally 1 hour before bed I will sometimes use other supplements to enhance sleep such as glycine, inositol, L-theanine and apigenin . Around 6pm we turn off bright lights, and I have put red light bulbs in our lamps downstairs as they are much less stimulating This may not be practical for most, blue light blocking glasses are another alternative . Bedtime is about 8pm during the week so that I can get 8 hours of sleep This is absolutely one of my top priorities Without adequate sleep, everything else loses its potency .

On the weekends my routine is different, but the overarching nutritional framework is typically the same This is where I will get my cardio in, in the form of riding the spin bike . I also try to get outside more, take walks and go to the park with Tiffany and Olympia . Getting outside and being exposed to sunlight is very important and is best to be done in the morning and evening when the UV index is lower .

Other notes: we use standalone air filters upstairs, downstairs and in the bedroom, I like the Coway brand We also have a whole home water filter that removes most toxins, chlorines and softens our water We are trying to eliminate plastic where possible, mainly using glass to store food and stainless steel and glass for drinking We use non-toxic cookware and wooden cutting boards I use a salt bar for deodorant and a non-plastic toothbrush For sleep hygiene, we have blackout curtains in the bedroom, tape over any lights showing (smoke detector, adjustable bedframe plug etc ) and lower the thermostat a few degrees Caffeine is avoided in the afternoon Artificial food dyes and sugar are avoided; stevia and monk fruit are preferred . We stay away from scented things aside from natural oils as much as we can (soap, detergent, candles etc )

This may seem like a lot, but these habits have been built in over years . If you are just getting started, focus on sleep, food and water quality . Keep in mind, you also must live your life and cannot focus on perfection but do what you can . If you have questions regarding anything written about here, please contact me, I am happy to assist .
