Community Connections

We are proud to connect with a wide variety of people, organizations, schools, and businesses in our communities. COVID had a huge impact on one of our newest partnerships, College Here & Now, and moved us to connect in new ways with new partners. Thanks to our community partners we were able to overcome the challenges we faced this past year, achieve success in new forms, and return to an old tradition.

Gala on the Go

What could HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital Foundation do when its longtime fundraising gala could not be held in person as usual due to COVID-19? What could Lakeshore Technical College do to help showcase a new state-of-the-art facility constructed for Culinary Arts students? The answer: Connect and create “Gala on the Go” – a new, mutually beneficial fundraising event that was innovative, interactive, and virtual. Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management students and instructors shared their gourmet recipes, prepped ingredients, and boxed up 1,000 meals for distribution and home preparation. Entertaining video instructions and printed materials highlighting the students were also provided. Donors safely prepared the meals they received at home and learned about the students. They gained experience with new ingredients and cooking techniques while viewing the instructional video recorded in our new facility and placed on our YouTube channel. Funds raised, which were well beyond expectations, supported underinsured HSHS St. Nicholas patients and scholarships for our students impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Amuse Bouche

Mousse – Creamy Sartori Fontina Cheese, blended with fresh herbs layered onto a crostini topped with blackberry jam.

Soup

Wild Mushroom Soup – A house-made vegetable broth complements hearty wild mushrooms and aromatics to create this flavorful soup with garlic croutons.

Entrée Course

Salmon en Papillote – Salmon filets steamed in parchment with citrus and herbs. Served with a mustard dill sauce. Or Tenderloin Roast for Two – Sage and garlic rubbed tenderloin roasted to your desired doneness and served with cranberry orange compote.

Entrée Accompaniments

Spaetzle – German egg and herb dumplings tossed in a quick butter sauce. Braised Red Cabbage – Red Cabbage and Apples simmered in sweet and tangy sauce.

Dessert Course

Raspberry Linzer Cookies – Almond cookie dough rolled, cut, and filled with a fresh raspberry jam. Provided by The Kitchens of Kohler

Dairyland Festival Parade

Staff and family members enjoyed participating in the Dairyland Festival Parade, held annually in the Village of Cleveland, home of our main campus. Families look forward to seeing us each year as we showcase our Advanced Manufacturing Mobile Lab, fire truck, ambulance, and other vehicles and equipment used for training first responders in our community.

College Here & Now

College Here & Now allows high school students to earn a college-level credential in Information Technology at their high school, while earning their high school diploma. We completed our second year at Sheboygan North and Sheboygan South, and our first year at Kiel High School. Since the program began, we have provided 23 college courses that 241 students enrolled in. When COVID-19 hit, we transitioned to online instruction for Sheboygan students. In fall 2020 we continued online instruction in Sheboygan and launched online courses in Kiel. Students adapted well overall, showing their determination to succeed. After completing two years of College Here & Now courses in Sheboygan, seven students became the first in this program to graduate with their technical diplomas in the IT-Web Development Specialist program. This technical diploma is a 22-credit program encompassing the first full year of the associate degree IT-Web & Software Developer program. In fall 2021, we will see two of these seven students attend Lakeshore Technical College to complete their associate degrees. The others were prepared to help fill the IT skills gap in our community by entering the workforce. Looking ahead to fall 2021, we are beyond excited to launch College Here & Now at Manitowoc McKinley and Lincoln High Schools, Mishicot High School, and Elkhart Lake High School.
