Lake of the Woods resident and Teacher of the Year Heidi Pettyjohn is a Library Media Specialist at Locust Grove Elementary School. Lake of the Woods resident and Locust Grove Elementary School Library Media Specialist Heidi Pettyjohn was honored as 2020 Teacher of the Year for her school by the Orange County Public School System. Her selection was announced May 28 by Schools Superintendent Dr. Cecil Snead. Pettyjohn and husband Brent, son Ethan, and daughters Natalie and Charlotte, have lived in Lake of the Woods since 2004 and have been active in the LOW Water Ski Club. “The kids grew up in the Ski Club, learning to ski at ages four and five,” Pettyjon said. “They really loved it. Now the older two are moving into new things, like girlfriends and working. Natalie and her friend Sage just went out to practice swiveling, so they are still loving ski time. I doubt she’ll have too much time for skiing, since she starts lifeguarding this week.” Other OCPS teachers named as Teacher of the Year for their schools are: Stacy Rublee; Grade 5, Lightfoot Elementary Meredith Elliott, Grade 1, Unionville Elementary Mike Allers, Grade 4, Gordon-Barbour Elementary Holli Handford, Special Education, Locust Grove Primary Suzanne Jarrell, Library Media Specialist, Orange Elementary Tanya Hall, Language Arts, Locust Grove Middle Rod Hawkins, Social Studies, Prospect Heights Middle Whitney Milbourne, CTE, Orange County High

Thirty antique and classic cars and one tri-motorcycle gathered on a beautiful, sunny Sunday June 7, to honor and thank the many organizations at Lake of the Woods that have helped others throughout the Coronavirus pandemic. The cavalcade began in the clubhouse lower level parking lot, circled the LOW Fire Station, and then proceeded past the LOW main entrance around Lakeview Parkway and back to the clubhouse parking lot. Those honored include first responders, medical personnel, caregivers, food pantry workers, LOW employees, and others. Ahead of the cavalcade, led by Mike Mote’s 1937 LaSalle, was a fire truck from LOW’s Engine Company 29 with siren alerting people of the coming parade of cars. A LOW Security vehicle followed the cavalcade. Along the way, LOW residents and guests cheered and thanked the show of support, some with their own signs of thanks. The participating antique and classic cars then parked for a time in the lower level parking lot for those wishing a closer look to see them. The cavalcade was one way to honor and show thanks to those who have helped LOW residents and others so much.
