Water Fitness in Lake of the Woods
The benefits of exercising in the water are many— the resistance from the water enhances each and every move, there is very little impact on one’s joints and the water keeps one cool and comfortable during the work-out. If you have never tried water exercise, this is a great time to start! This is a high energy, full body workout, but, as with all water fitness programs, one can work at his or her own pace. Each class is an hour and starts with warm-up movements, followed by stretching, 20-25 minutes of cardio and a strengthening component using various equipment which is provided. The final segment of the class is a relaxing cool-down. All classes are choreographed to music and, yes, singing along is encouraged. The LOW Water Fitness Program will begin Monday, June 12 through Friday, August 25. All classes are held at the Clubhouse Pool on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 AM and 10 AM. The cost of a season pass is $125 and the daily drop-in fee is $7. Registration will take place at the Clubhouse Pool on the first day of class, June 12 at 8:30 AM. please bring a check for $125 made payable to Carol Greeney with “water fitness” on the memo line. For questions regarding the program please contact instructor, Carol Greeney at 540-972-6739 or rcgreeney@ comcast.net.
Ongoing Activities in LOW Crocheting and Knitting: If you are interested in learning a new craft and always wanted to try your hand at knitting or crocheting, why don’t you try this class? Knitting— you will learn how to cast on, knit, purl and bind off. Crocheting— you will learn how to make a basic chain, single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. If you need help with a project, new or something you are stuck with let’s see if we can figure it out together! We will meet In the Community Center on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 AM-12 PM. Each class is $5, but if you want to commit to five classes, the cost is $20. For questions, or to sign-up and what materials are needed, contact the instructor, Sylvia at 540-972-9680, or email at szelinsky@lowa.org. Exercising for Health: Did you know adding resistance exercise leads to lowering blood pressure? Did you know slow deeper breaths can shave 3 to 4 points off systolic blood pressure? Did you know isometric exercise can lower your blood pressure from10 to 12 points (even if you don’t have high blood pressure)? This class offers a variety of movements and use of props with a goal of staying healthy, gaining strength, flexibility, and balance. The use of dynaband straps, weights, and mats for Yoga moves help us reach our goals. Tai Chi is offered on Mondays from 9:30-10:15 AM. Exercising for Health Class is offered on Monday and Thursday from 10:30-11:30 AM. For more details, please contact Donna at 540-972-1977 or Yoga4you_low@comcast.net. Donna is a certified Yoga, Tai Chi and Arthritis Foundation Exercise instructor. She understands knee, back and Arthritis problems so don’t let that stop you from exercising. Registration is completed at the first class. Fun Bunch 55+: Come and have some fun! Join us for socializing card games, table games and pool. Snacks and coffee will be provided! For information call John or Aggie at 540-972-5611, or the Community Center at 540-972-9680. Picklball: Join us for a great game that includes both tennis and paddleball skills. We meet Monday through Friday in the Multipurpose Room at the Community Center. When weather permits, we play on our outdoor courts in the morning. For information and how to sign up, call John at 540-229-7940. There are different levels of play and times: Advanced Level 9:30 AM-12 PM Novice Level 12-2:30 PM Intermediate Level 2:30-5 PM LOW Senior Softball: We play from 9 AM-12 PM on Friday’s (weather permitting). It is basically batting practice. One player hits, one pitches and everyone else is in the field shagging fly balls. No base running involved! Join us for some fun. Play ball! Questions or concerns, call John Cavanaugh540-229-7940. Tae-Kwon-Do: The Lake of the Woods Tae-Kwon-Do Lake Tigers practice at the Community Center every Tuesday and Thursday at: 7 PM for ages 8-11; and 7:45 PM for ages 12 through adult. There is no yearly contract to take lessons. The classes are taught in eight 9-week sessions and paid for when taken. This provides more flexibility to participate in other activities and resume study at the next session if needed. The cost is $99 per 8-10 week session with a discount for multiple family members. Uniform cost is extra, but first session is discounted. If you are interested in beginning classes or just want to drop by to watch and meet the instructors, please feel free to stop by the Community Center any Tuesday or Thursday at the times above, or call the Head Instructor, 4th Dan Master Mike Murphy at 540-710-3318, or email lowtkd@comcast.net. Visit the website at http://seongsmartialarts.com/lowtkd/. Intermediate/Advanced Open Play Volleyball: Are you ready to play? Our group is for those who have developed their skills enough to play at more of an advanced level, able to consistently serve, pass, set, spike/hit, dig, and/or block during a volley. Yet we still focus on having fun and getting exercise. Participants range in age from teens to 50+ and the crucial requisite is skill level. This is not league play, team members vary from week to week or even game to game. Official rules are applied during play. There is no cost to participate. Anyone interested in participating or for more information, please call via voice or text message at 540809-7406. Free skill clinics might be organized if there is sufficient interest.
