Richardson to Manage Clubhouse
by Dan McFarland, Lake Currents Copy Editor Ryan Richardson was 12 years old when he started bussing tables in 1980. Richardson, who takes over as clubhouse manager May 1 following Joey Welsh’s retirement, says he took that first job because “I needed to earn some money so I could buy a car when I turned 16.” In the intervening 37 years, Richardson has built an extensive resume in the food services industry, most recently serving for 10 years as Director of Food and Beverages at the Fredericksburg Expo Center. Prior to that, he worked for Aramark in their sports and entertainment division, primarily responsible for food and beverage operations at football stadiums and arenas, Ryan Richardson including the University of Virginia’s Scott Stadium and at Old Dominion University, plus Citizens Bank Ball Park in Philadelphia, and Coors Field in Denver. He chose the job at Lake of the Woods because, he said, “I was looking for something that would give me more time with my family, to be closer to my family.” The new clubhouse manager lives in nearby Wilderness Shores with his wife, Justine, and daughters Kaitlin, 8, and Lillian, 3. The opportunity to spend several weeks shadowing Joey Welsh has given him a positive impression of the clubhouse operation, and he says it played a very strong role in his decision to take the job. “The people are great,” he said. “Everybody is smiling, very sad to see Joey go, but welcoming me with open arms. The core crew of servers we have are definitely a plus, and our bartenders that have been here a number of years are a very strong crew back there, and the kitchen is strong also.” He remains well aware of the challenges facing him here. “Going into the summer season, we have our work cut out for us, with the deck opening, 50th Anniversary events and the Fourth of July.” The biggest personal challenge he sees, though, is “learning everybody’s name. There are some 4,300 people here that I want to be on a first name basis with.” Another challenge will be recognizing, and responding to, the diversity within our community. See Clubhouse on p. 11
