Meet Communications Manager Carolyn Brodeur by Dan McFarland, Lake Currents Copy Editor

LOWA’s new Communications Manager, Carolyn Brodeur, has been fascinated with communication and graphic design since high school. She obtained a version of Microsoft Publisher on her first computer some 20 years ago and, in her own words, then “began playing with clip art.” After earning a BA in English from Bridgewater State College (now Bridgewater State University) in Massachusetts, she went to work for the Boys & Girls Clubs, moving between several different chapters of that organization. She settled into the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington in 2005, and spent the last 12 years with them, most recently as their Interim Regional Vice President. The chance to take over the LOWA Communications Department, following the departure of long-time Communications Coordinator Melanie Parmelee, provided Brodeur with “an exciting opportunity, close to home.” She lives in Spotsylvania with husband Jeffrey, a federal government employee in DC, and 5-year-old son Elliot. The new job will also allow her to specialize in the part of her previous position that she enjoyed most. “The creative side. It’s nice to be able to focus on one duty, one task, one department, rather than being ‘queen of all trades,’” she says, with a grin. “This is something I am very excited about.”

LOW Celebrates Proclamation Weekend by Jon Anderson, Chair, 50th Anniversary Ad Hoc Committee

Fifty years after the Virginia General Assembly proclaimed Lake of the Woods an official Home Owner’s Association, LOW members celebrated the Lake’s 50th Anniversary beginning on April 21 with a weekend of celebratory events. Starting with a sold-out, semiformal dinner/dance at the Clubhouse on Friday, the fun continued Saturday with a second soldout casual dance at Fareways Café; and another free-for-all, family-oriented Retro Dance at the Community Center. Friday’s dinner dance featured special Photo by Stu King guest appearances by our United States Delegate Nick Frietas (L) and Congressman, Dave Brat; our 17th District Virginia Senator, Bryce Reeves, and our 30th State Senator Bryce Reeves(R) District Virginia Delegate, Nick Frietas. These present LOWA 50th anniversalegislators were instrumental in having a ry congratulatory proclamation congratulatory proclamation inserted into both to LOWA representative the United States Congressional Record, and Jon Anderson. the record of the Virginia General Assembly. The guests presented copies of each to the Association, and they are now available for viewing at the Holcomb Building. Saturday’s events kept both the Fareways and the Community Center dancing to DJ music of the past five decades, with many LOW members asking, “When can we do this again?” Congratulations, LOW, for 50 years of wonderful community living!

LOWA Launching Photo ID Card System Pool and Fitness Patrons to Get First Cards

by Patrick O’Loughlin, LOWA Information Technology Coordinator LOWA is proud to announce that we will be transitioning to a photo ID card system for the LOWA-issued IDs used by members, registered tenants, and other LOWA cardholders. Beginning Monday, May 22, we ask that all members, registered tenants and their households ages 5 and above who plan to use the pools and the fitness center this summer come in to the Holcomb Building to get the new cards. The new card will include a picture of the cardholder on the front. The cards will also display the date of birth (DOB) of children age 5-15. Eventually we want all card holders to transition to the photo ID. The current magnetic stripe on the back of the card will be replaced with a barcode, which is more dependable than the magnetic stripe. We will have a grace period from May 27 to July 10 to allow pool and fitness center patrons to get new cards. The new ID card will be required to enter the

pools and fitness center starting July 10. Current LOWA ID cards will be honored until then. The new photo ID cards will allow the lifeguards to verify the cardholder’s pool privilege, and allow authorized entry for fitness center members. We ask that those who use the pool and fitness center come to the Holcomb building beginning May 22. Holcomb Building Member Services hours are 8:30 AM to 5 PM, Monday-Friday, and 9 AM to 1 PM Saturdays. The Member Services area is located on the Fire & Rescue side of the Holcomb Building. There will be a dedicated station for issuing the new cards. There is no charge for the new ID card. When you come in, you will have your picture taken and receive your new card. LOWA does not issue photo IDs for guests. Member Services sells Guest Passes for the pools. The daily guest fee is $3. Guest pass cards are: 10 visits for $25, 20 visits for $40 and 30 visits for $45.
