LOW Vets Memorial Day Ceremony

Memorial Day is one of the most important dates on the calendar for Americans, as it remembers those who gave their lives in the service of their country.

The Lake of the Woods Veterans Club will hold the Memorial Day Ceremony on May 29 beginning at 11 AM at the Clubhouse Portico. There will be a flag detail with w service flags representing the Army, Navy, Marines, Marines Air Force and Coast Guard. The American flag will be raised to the top position of the Clubhouse flag pole.

Clubhouse Area and Recreation Project Update

The LOWA Board of Directors voted May 17 to approve the conceptual site plan for the Clubhouse Area Recreation Complex and to authorize the RRMM Lukmire Architect/Engineering team to proceed to the next phase of detailed design, permitting, and construction documents preparation.

Before approval, the Board reviewed the plans and $5 million project cost estimate to replace the current 1967 pool and pool bathhouse/fitness center, and modified the specifications to read:  The lap pool portion of the pool will have six-lanes rather than five lanes  The lap pool will be 3 feet six inches deep on the shallow end to nine feet on the deep end rather than 10 feet.  The parking lot will be reduced in size to 25 accessible parking spaces rather than 32 spaces.  True zero entry pool so that the lap pool can also be accessed without a chair lift. The desire is to totally remove the chair lift.

Sweetbriar Pool For many people, Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer. Both the Clubhouse and the Sweetbriar pools will be open starting May 27. Sweetbriar pool brings some new and exciting features that will bring enjoyment to the youth in our community; here are some of the new rules for the equipment. LOWA residents are encouraged to visit both pools throughout the summer during their hours of operation.

Please be advised of possible delays Sunday, June 4, entering the Lake through either barcode entry point as those barcodes relating to family guests, blood relatives and co-habits that have not been renewed for the 2017-2018 year will be deactivated.

Barcodes for these individuals need to be renewed every year with Member Services by completing the proper forms by May 1.

If you have completed all of these related forms during the Assessment period, you have nothing further to do and are ready for the 2017-2018 year.

President’s Letter

“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal” (H. Ford) What a great feeling, as I look out my window this morning, to see a bright sun and realize how lucky I am to be alive and to be living in Lake of the Woods.

I hope everyone can take a moment today to reflect on the beauty of this time.

The Board continues to work on many of the issues that are facing Lake of the Woods. Most immediate is the Clubhouse Area Recreation Complex Project. We are moving toward the design plan phase so that work can begin in earnest on the financial questions surrounding the project. Needless to say, there is much discussion that will be held before any real answers are reached. Assessment, special assessment, bank loan, or some combination thereof, seem to be the most logical choices, but time will tell. A special subgroup will be appointed by the Board to make recommendations among all the choices. I am sure I will have more to say on that in future letters.

The Board has also once again picked up the task of finishing development of a new Vision/Mission Statement for Lake of the Woods, with the accompanying required goals and objectives. This project was started a couple of Boards back, but was stalled with all the referendums and other issues that popped up along the way. Serge Ogranovitch and Tom Sheridan are co-leading this effort which is scheduled to happen over the course of seven hours. This is done in an open-meeting format, but is limited to participation by Board members. It will make for a couple of long days (as we throw in a Board meeting after one of the sessions), but we hope the exercise will result in direction for years to come. JoAnn is the only Board member who has been involved with this from the start and will really be pushing us to finish it this time.

Sweetbriar Pool is ready. Great weather throughout the winter enabled the project to be completed on time. Winkler Pools, our new pool management company, has been training guards and preparing both pools for the upcoming season. We are looking for a spectacular swim season and I know the Barracudas are happy to have the new facility and appropriate practice time to excel in competition. Thanks, once again, to all the groups that cooperated so well in sharing the one pool at Clubhouse Point while Sweetbriar was being built.

The Equestrian Center is in full operation for the summer schedule.

Many of the Pony Camps are sold out and you need to give them a call for the final few spots if you have an interest in the Pony Camp. The summer also has a full schedule of competitions set, so watch for those if you like to see our horses and students in action.

In closing this letter, I thank all the current employees of Lake of the Woods for their dedication and hard work. I do not think the Lake has ever looked better. Also, once again I welcome our new employees; Bridget Hutchens at the Equestrian Center, Ryan Richardson at the Clubhouse, and Carolyn Brodeur in Communications. These folks are fine additions to our family and they will bring further excellence to our overall programs.

Correction Minutes of the May 6, 2017 Board of Directors Meeting showed William Goetz as “resigned” from the Environmental Control Committee. It should have read, “Term of Service.”

EXECUTIVE SESSION Motion by Hoh, passed unanimously, to enter into Executive Session at 1 PM for the purpose of discussing matters involving violations of the Declaration of Restrictions and Regulations for which a member, his family members, tenants, guests or other invitees are responsible.

REPORTS 3.1 Reports of Officers: None.

3.2 Report of the General Manager Sweetbriar Pool: The pool is currently being filled to prepare for opening by May 27. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on May 24.

Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Fred Ripley is retiring, and LOWA will be looking for a new inspector to replace him.

Excavation work and electrical installations for the Clubhouse point outdoor sound system have been completed. Live Audio Academy will complete the remaining equipment installation. As of May 10, the project is on budget and on schedule to be ready for the May 26 Concert on the Point.

Club chairs at Fareways, which had been repurposed from the Clubhouse, are deteriorating and will need to be replaced. AGM Chester Guzek is gathering pricing information to present to the Board at their June 3 meeting.

A member photo ID card system is being implemented by LOWA,

Summertime is near and LOW is coming alive with outdoor activity on the beaches and in the lakes. One telling sign I see from my Holcomb Building window is the various boats being towed through the gate on their way to the lakes. Security is reminding members that Lake Patrol is enforcing this year’s orange (powered) and black (non-powered) watercraft decals. Please display your decals and enjoy your boating time!

In anticipation of Board of Directors elections in late summer, LOWA tested our new electronic voting capability. The convenience of electronic voting will likely increase member participation in elections. A total of 107 out of 175 members (61 percent) from the Board and Committees participated in the Mock Election for the Board of Directors using some well-known persons from Orange County history. The voting came to an end on May 10 at a Mock Membership Meeting (aka Elections Committee meeting) when President Larry Morlan gaveled voting closed. President Morlan, Secretary Jennifer Zukowski, the Elections Committee, and Management then reviewed the results with our electronic voting vendor from Vote-Now.com. The lessons learned will help LOWA run a smooth “hybrid’ voting system so that members have a choice between the traditional paper proxy ballot and the new electronic ballot. Watch for discussion of rules and procedures at June Board meetings. Trespassing: Private lot owners are experiencing trespassing across their lots in the 400 block of Wilderness Drive to Sailboat Beach near the Clubhouse area. Private lot trespassing, which is the responsibility of the lot owner rather than LOWA, can result in a Class 1 misdemeanor charge.

Please be kind and not cut across private lots on Wilderness or streets to reach LOWA beaches and parks.

Fred Ripley is our erosion and sediment inspector in the Maintenance Department. Fred is retiring June 3 after seven years with LOWA. He was hired in June 2010 as the Covenants and Site Inspector. He became the Erosion & Sediment Inspector in March 2014. As E&S Inspector, Fred oversaw the reconstruction of several miles of roadside ditches to protect our lakes from sediments and pollutants. One attribute I truly appreciate about Fred is his even temperament. Erosion issues on private lots can be very upsetting to members. When meeting lotside with members, Fred would always make sure the member’s concerns were heard and understood. We wish Fred well as he retires to spend more time with his wife Abbie!

The names of veterans, who lived at Lake of the Woods and deceased since last year’s Memorial Day, will be read according to the service in which they served. There will then be an opportunity for attendees to call to remembrance the name of any veteran they knew who has deceased. The veteran remembered need not have lived at LOW. The American flag will then be lowered to half-mast and taps will be played.

The speaker at the ceremony will be Lieutenant General Tom Rhame, USA (Ret.). General Rhame is a member of the LOW Association. He served two combat tours in Vietnam. During Operation Desert Storm, Gen. Rhame commanded the 1st Infantry Division (“The Big Red One”) that successfully conducted the initial attack to penetrate Iraqi defensive positions. His units conducted an interdiction attack into Kuwait to cut off Iraqi units attempting to escape from Kuwait. He also hosted the cease fire talks in Safwan, Iraq.

General Rhame also served in positions in Washington, DC, Germany and California.

Memorial Day was started on May 30, 1868 to honor Union soldiers killed in the Civil War. By the 1900s, it had become a day to celebrate all American soldiers who died while serving in the military.

Here are the casualty figures from each U.S. war: Civil War: Approximately 620,000 Americans died. The Union lost almost 365,000 troops and the Confederacy about 260,000. More than half of these deaths were caused by disease.

World War I: 116,516 Americans died, more than half from disease.

World War II: 405,399 Americans died.

Korean War: 36,574 Americans died.

Vietnam Conflict: 58,220 Americans died. More than 47,000 Americans were killed in action and nearly 11,000 died of other causes.

Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm:148 U.S. battle deaths and 145 non-battle deaths.

Operation Iraqi Freedom: 4,422 U.S. service members died.

Operation New Dawn: 66 U.S. service members died. More have died in Afghanistan.

The Memorial Day Ceremony is an opportunity for parents to bring children to better understand the sacrifices made for the freedoms of all Americans.

Board Votes to Prohibit Above Ground Swimming Pools

The Board of Directors approved the amendment to regulation XVI.K.8., Environmental Control and Construction Procedures, Regarding Above Ground Swimming Pools and Regulation V.F., regarding portable children’s wading pools at its May 17, 2017 meeting. The amendments are effective immediately.

The result is above ground swimming pools are prohibited on the private lots.

WHEREAS, Article VIII., of the Bylaws gives the Board of Directors the authority to amend and adopt association Rules and Regulations; and WHEREAS, there is a need for clear, concise and consistent regulations on the matters of above ground swimming pools and portable children’s wading pools.

THEREFORE, RESOLVED, the Board of Directors hereby adopts the following amendments to Regulations XVI.K.8., and V.F.1f.

XVI. ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL AND CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES K. OTHER CONSTRUCTION 8.

Only an in-ground swimming pool is permitted. In-ground pools, hot tubs, and spas are restricted to the area behind and within the side planes of the house, and shall comply with all laws, ordinances, and regulations of the Commonwealth of Virginia and Orange County. Only black aluminum fencing may be used around a pool area which is consistently no taller than 54 inches in height.

They range from, “You are pricing us out of our home.� to “Our household feels that LOW is a living, breathing community. We must keep up with amenities to keep up with the times.� Another says, “I strongly oppose a special assessment for something I do not use.� And another says, “I think the Board should consider covering one of the pools now. More people would support a new pool if they could use it year-round.� Yet another says, “NO NEW ASSESSMENTS AT ALL.� The comments are almost evenly divided between members who are for and against the project.

Why is the Board moving forward on this project? We are tasked with making decisions that are in the best interests of the Association. We are responsible for protecting LOWA property values and investing in the future, while exercising our fiduciary responsibility on behalf of the members. It is easy for aging HOAs to fall into decline if their Boards do not take care of the common areas. At the same time, we understand and respect the financial positions of all members, including those who are less well off than others.

Please be assured, the Board does not want to price anyone out of their home. There are many ways to finance this project. The Board is evaluating multiple approaches, from a one-time assessment to a long-term loan, or a combination of options. My hope is that enough of us are willing to pay a one-time assessment up front, which would lower the amount of the loan, and thereby reduce the size of installments for the rest of the members. We are a community. Everyone matters.

While we could keep patching up the 1967 recreation area at Clubhouse Point to keep assessments down for a little while longer, at some point we will need to act to prevent the community from going into decline. It is difficult for a community to pull out of a downward spiral.

This Board is looking at every option for keeping our investment in the project at a reasonable level. We may not be able to build every feature members want at this time. Our goal is to build the project in such a way that more features could be added in the future.

Use Lap Swim Time to Your Advantage

by Julie Phend, Member, Pools Committee Everybody is looking forward to summer, and summer E m means swimming. This year, we’re excited to have two pools open, with lots of opportunities for fun and exercise.

Again this year, there will be a 15-minute lap swim during the last 15 minutes of every hour at both pools.

This lap swim time was instituted two years ago when it was discovered that our former adult swim time violated the Fair Housing Act. While the adult swim was popular with many of our members, some HOAs have been sued for age discrimination. Therefore, in an effort to provide a splash-free time for swimmers of all ages, the adult swim was replaced with lap swimming/water walking time. This time allows serious swimmers to get their exercise without worrying about being jumped on or hit by a water ball.

Children may be in the pool during this time only if they are swimming laps. What if your child is not able or inclined to swim laps? This 15-minute period is an excellent time for children to take a break, re-apply sunscreen, drink some water, and have a snack. The concession stands at both pools will be open only during lap swim periods. Before you know it, the whistle will blow, and everyone can get back in the pool.

Guidelines for lap swim time are listed below, and will be posted at both pools. Please help us keep the pools fun for folks of all ages and swim levels by listening to the lifeguards and following the guidelines.

As a reminder, all members, registered tenants and their households ages 5 and above who wish to use the pool and fitness center need a photo ID card to enter the facilities.

There is no charge for the new ID card. When you come in, you will have your picture taken and receive your new card. LOWA does not issue photo IDs for guests.

Holcomb Building Member Services hours are 8:30 AM to 5 PM, Monday-Friday, and 9 AM to 1 PM Saturdays.

Honor Awards Committee Seeks Nominees

Lap Swim Guidelines Revised January 2017 Lap swimmers range in their abilities and fitness levels from beginners to serious competitive swimmers. Please follow these guidelines to make aquatic workouts safe and pleasurable for all swimmers.

Reminder: The permanent lap lane at each pool is reserved for lap swimmers whenever the pool is open.

During the 15-minute lap swim (the last 15 minutes of every hour):  Do not occupy the pool for socializing.  The entire pool will be used for lap swimming.  Lane 1 is reserved for aquatic walking/jogging.  Enter the lap swimming lane at the shallow end only.  Use the black lines on the bottom of the pool as lane guides.  Be prepared to share lanes.  Swimmers already in the lane always have the right of way.  Swim with people of similar ability.  If you are resting or waiting at the end of the lane, move out of the way to allow other swimmers full use of the wall for turning.  Exit the pool after your workout.  Be cautious, courteous and respect other people’s efforts.

A total of 70 Lake of the Woods residents entered the 50th Anniversary 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, May 6 held at the Golf Course. The weather started out in the low 60’s and overcast, a perfect day to enjoy a run/walk over our beautiful LOWA golf amenity and to celebrate fifty years of superb activities for our community. The most competitive categories were in the Female and Male “41 and Over� groups, where almost 80 percent of the runner/walkers participated.

The winners in individual categories were: ď‚ˇď€ Female 15 and Under: Kaylan Fleming; Male 15 and Under: Jonah Linker; ď‚ˇď€ Female 16 to 25: Mallory Davis; Male 16 to 25 Luke Wilson; ď‚ˇď€ Female 26 to 40: Katie Abel; Male 26 to 40: Eric Fieser; ď‚ˇď€ Female 41 and Over: Devora Zack; Male 41 and Over: Dan Pope.

(A special category was added due to the large number of runners in the 41 and Over category.) ď‚ˇď€ Female Over 70: Bonnie Snoddy; Male Over 70: Bob Hoh. Almost 20 volunteers gave up their Saturday morning to help out with security and safety on the course, timing and registration. The 5K course was both hilly and challenging (who can forget making their way up that final “Heartbreak Hillâ€? on Hole Number 10?) Luke Wilson, an Orange County High School runner, was the overall winner of the event with a superb time of 21:41, followed closely by U.S. Navy sailor Connor Ballenger in the same age group.

Congratulations and thank you, to Luke and to all who both participated in and supported this fun event!

On May 20 and 21, LOWA held the 2017 Spring Two Person Team Tournament. This tournament was three events in one; Ladies Division, Senior Men Division, and Men’s Division. The weather was super for the weekend and everyone had a great time!  Ladies Division -Gross Winners were Nancy King and Jeanne Woodward, they shot a 79-87=166  Net Winners were Loretta Yurkus and Janice Mincey, they shot a 6465=129.  Senior Men’s Division Gross Winners were Leo Maruschak and Bernie Hamilton, they shot a 69-75=144.  Net Winners were Jim Hoffmann and Bill McClellan 61-59=120.  Men’s Division Gross winners were Paul Hibbs lll and Matt Hibbs, they shot 70-69=139.  Net Winners were Dave Baker and Dave Lloyd, they shot a 64-72=136.

Through the efforts of Bev and Jim Arnold, our LOW Bluebird Trail is now certified by the Virginia Bluebird Society and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. It is a state and federal offense to abuse the birdhouses, and all the houses have now been posted. During a recent inspection, we found several houses that had five fledglings in them.

Continuing a tradition, Civil War Study Group (CWSG) members judged posters created by fourth graders at Lightfoot and Locust Grove Elementary Schools. In a project to end their year of studies, the students chose a person or topic having to do with Virginia history, even if not directly addressed in class, and produced a poster.

The following CWSG members judged a total of 140 posters at the schools on May 3: Charles Brewer; Anne Felder; Allie Felder; Peg Grella; Jack Phend; Elaine Pratt; and Pete Rainey.

On May 11, the CWSG hosted a reception in the Clubhouse attended by 40 students and their families. The studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; posters had been hung on the walls for all to see. After opening remarks by CWSG President Charles Brewer, teachers Andrea Dinger (LES) and Faithe Foster (LGES) presented award certificates and blue ribbons to the students. Principals Jewel Williams (LES) and Renee Wooten (LGES) were also present.

Refreshments were set up and served by Wilderness â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Tiques members Helen Brewer, Georgianne Cedarblade, and Carolyn Graham.

Democratic Committees Host McEachin

LOWLINC Speaker Series: Nutrition As We Age

The Democratic Committees of Orange, Culpeper and Madison Counties will host a “Take Back the House!” dinner on May 31 at the Lake of the Woods Clubhouse.

U.S. Rep. Don McEachin, of Virginia’s 4th Congressional District, will speak at the dinner at 6 PM. Ben Hixon, candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates from Virginia’s 30th District, will also be a guest.

Tickets are $50 per person, with proceeds going to Hixon’s campaign.

The event begins at 6 PM with a cash bar.

Dinner will be served at 6:45 PM, and will include Virginia ham, Atlantic cod, red bliss potatoes, U. vegetable medley and apple pie. Vegetarian or S. vegan choices will be available on request.

The LOW Democratic Club will also celebrate Flag Day at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, at its annual picnic at the LOW Community Center. Ben Hixon, the Democratic candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates from the 30th District, will be special guest speaker. Everyone is welcome at the picnic without regard to political affiliation.

There will be fried chicken and a variety of homemade side dishes, desserts and beverages. Tickets are $7 per person and are available at the door. Children under the age of 12 are admitted without charge.

As we get older our lifestyles often change. A presentation by Registered Dietitian Maureen Watts, Thursday June 1, at the LOW Community Center will help us understand that our nutrition needs also change with age. Maureen will include information on what our bodies require as we get older and the nutrients of special concern. She will focus on food groups, healthy meal patterns, serving sizes, and how to deal with life changes that create challenges with nutrition. In addition, she will discuss the benefits of regular activity, with information about how much and what kinds of activity are required to keep us healthy.

Maureen emphasizes that even small changes in daily habits can go a long way toward better health.

She works individually with clients to assess nutrition needs and to assist them in reaching specific nutrition-related goals, whether those goals include weight loss, improved heart health, diabetes control, normalized eating patterns, or general healthy eating. Maureen works with clients to develop lifelong habits for lasting results.

How Lions Carry Out “We Serve” Mission: LOW Lions Club Marks 35th Anniversary of Community Service

There are a lot of major anniversaries this year: Lake of the Woods is celebrating our 50th; Lions Clubs International is turning 100; and the LOW Lions Club is marking its 35th year of serving the community.

Since its founding in 1982, members of the LOW Lions Club have taken the motto of Lions International “We Serve” very seriously, with energetic enthusiasm for all that we do.

Through a series of periodic articles in Lake Currents over the next few months, we’ll attempt to refresh your understanding of how we serve our community, our county, and even many people in third-world countries. The articles will give detailed information on all of the services we have provided throughout our history.

You’ll learn more about our youth scholarship program, the Wilderness Food Pantry, the sight and hearing programs and support groups, the medical equipment loan program, the center that processes over 40,000 pairs of recycled eyeglasses every year, the support activities for the American Red Cross blood drives, sponsorship of youth programs and LEO Clubs in the middle school and high school, the grants to teachers to help them finance special programs in our schools, the Bland Music competition for area youth. We Serve in many ways.

Follow-up articles will describe how funds are raised from residents of LOW and the surrounding area to enable the LOW Lions Club to carry out its “We Serve” mission. These fundraising events include the weekly yard sale at the Velona Building where everybody wins (donors, buyers and the Lions); the White Cane Days to support sight programs (held May 12 and 13 this year); the annual Golf Tournament in September; and the Tree of Love program each December to provide financial help for selected needy families in the area.

The next article in the series will feature the Youth Scholarships the LOW Lions are presenting this month. Please stay tuned.

On July 9, at Lake of the Woods Clubhouse Point, Corinne Marr will be directing the SmileS Adaptive Carnival for differently-abled adults, teens, veterans and their families. Corinne will be working in conjunction with the Lake of the Woods Ski Club and the Lake of the Woods Adaptive Watersports Foundation who will be contributing volunteers as well as equipment.

This FREE day of water fun (adaptive skiing, fishing, tubing, paddle boarding, kayaking, pontoon rides) and land activities (carnival games, lawn games, live music, face painting, hair feathers) will include lunch and a ski show for all participants and their families as well as volunteers.

The Lake of the Woods Lions and Lioness Clubs would like to thank everyone who donated during our recent White Cane Fund Drive. Over $3,000 was raised to help the various programs that these clubs support.

These funds support traditional Lions activities that help citizens of Orange County, such as helping sight and hearing impaired people, sight and hearing screening of Orange County school children, and provision of eyeglasses to children whose families cannot afford them. The funds also support the Wilderness Food Pantry, the volunteer fire and rescue company, a medical equipment loan program, grants to Orange County teachers for educational support, local scholarships, music competitions and emergency financial assistance. LOW Coloring Book Available at LOWVAC Art Show

Thanks to watercolor artist Ellie Baughman for finding a perfect copy of the Original LOW Coloring Book. This book was sold at the first LOWVACsponsored art show in 1982. It was created by Jean Dundas, a founding member and chair of LOWVAC for the first two years. The book included 14 pictures of LOW scenes and amenities as they were in 1982, and was sold for $3. Proceeds benefited the LOW Lion’s Club Community Service/Charity Fund and was sold at LOWVAC art shows through 1989 To celebrate the LOWA 50th and LOWVAC 35-year anniversaries, a new LOW coloring book will be sold at our yearly art show. Our new coloring book will be composed of art showing highlights of our beautiful community as it is today. The Longest Day is a spring team event to increase awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association. This unique event is held annually, on or near the summer solstice. The longest day is chosen to honor those who are living with dementia and their caregivers for whom every day is the longest day.

Here at Lake of the Woods we have two events planned: The first is a Memory Cafe Luncheon at Lake of the Woods Church on Wednesday, June 14. This is for those with a problem with memory and their caregivers or friends. The free lunch will begin at noon and will be followed by games and a chance to become acquainted with each other. A call to 9720652 would be helpful, but is not necessary if you plan to attend.

The second event is our Fourth Annual Poker Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease. This will be held on Saturday June 17 at 9 AM, starting at Clubhouse Beach. This event is to help raise funds for dementia and Alzheimer’s through research. This disease is the sixth- leading cause of death in the United States.

This is an easy walk around the clubhouse point, down around the walkway in front of dam and to the top of the dam. Along the way you will collect cards. On your return back to the beach, winners will be determined by our judges. A $10 donation is requested to walk or you may come and donate any amount you wish and cheer the walkers on. Children and dogs walk for free. The walk will be canceled for heavy rain or thunderstorms. Call Norma at 972-0652 with any questions.

The group’s purpose is to encourage new golfers to come out and play with more experienced players, build confidence and become familiar with our beautiful course. The Farm Team held its first session of the 2017 season on Wednesday, May 3. Started 10 years ago, the Farm Team meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month throughout the summer and strives to teach new and returning golfers the basics of the game in a fun, non-threatening way.

The Men’s Golf Association is proudly announcing a golf tournament to Support Our Warriors. This year’s tournament will be held on Saturday June 3.

Last year, through the generous support of our sponsors and participants, the MGA raised over $10,000 for the benefit of the Virginia Veterans and Family Support organization of the Virginia Department of Veterans Affairs.

This year’s tournament will benefit The Fisher House Foundation. This foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes where active military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide, close to the medical center or hospital they serve. Fisher Houses have up to 21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths.

Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, dining areas, and a living room. Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is never a lodging fee.

Since inception, the program has saved military and veterans families an estimated $320 million in out-of-pocket costs for lodging and transportation.

The event will start with registration beginning at 7:30 AM. The tournament will have a shotgun start at 9 AM. There will be special on-course events and door prizes. The entry fee is $75 per player or $300 per team for non annual golf members. LOW annual golf member’s entry fee is $50. Sign up sheets are available at the Pro Shop.

The MGA is seeking donations to support this worthy cause. Monetary donations in the amount of $100 or more will receive special recognition in the form of a “Sponsorship Sign” placed at the Lake of the Woods Country Club during the period of the tournament.

Business and individual sponsorships are equally encouraged as they provide alternative benefits, which can be discussed in detail by contacting Don Smith, President, MGA at 972-3093. Preliminary conceptual studies have been done to evaluate a proposal to reduce two sharp curves on Route 601 (Flat Run Road). No definite source of funding has been approved and no decision has been made regarding any proposed work.

The total cost of the flashing yellow arrow light and lane revisions on Route 3 at the front gate has not yet been determined, but we will be informed if there are any funds left over from the $150k donated

by Walmart.

The county is still waiting to hear if the FCC approves our fiber-optic project. If they approve it, the county is ready to implement the technical work needed to bring Broadband to our area.

Member Comments on Business Agenda One member provided several suggestions supporting the need for a 6-lane pool at the Clubhouse and the advantages of building for the future and considering both pools be able to accommodate similar activities. Finance Committee Chair Olive Kelly requested the Board include the Finance Committee in discussions of any business loans needed for the new Clubhouse pool complex project.

The mock election of Directors using electronic voting came to a close on May 10. Results were reviewed with VoteNow representative James Claiborne, and lessons learned will provide a basis for considering changes to our voting rules and procedures.

Committee Liaison Reports Finance Committee: President Morlan reported that new issues have come up pertaining to the proposed Procurement Policy Amendments, and discussion will take place at a later Board meeting. Consideration of Membership Mailing/Advisory Vote on the Clubhouse Pool/Fitness Center/Outdoor Recreation Complex project is on hold for now because of pending vote on the conceptual design plan.

Fitness Committee: The Board has taken the request for Fitness Center treadmill replacements under advisement and will be addressing it at a later date.

Planning Committee: The Non-emergency Capital Expenditures Review Process needs more study, and is being taken under advisement for consideration.

Committee Reports Pools Committee Chair Marty Caldwell reported the Committee has studied possible rule changes for the new slide and diving board at Sweetbriar and reviewed the contract with Winkler Pool Management, Inc. Planned summer social events include an adult pool party at Sweetbriar on July 17, a youth pool/pizza party on July 22, and a Doggie Swim in September. Several articles are being planned for Lake Currents.

Sweetbriar pool will stay open for two weekends following Labor Day as a test to see if there is community support for the idea.

Committee vacancies have been filled but they could use some alternates.

Tennis Committee Chair Miff Devens reported the Committee has seven voting members plus alternates and advisors. Tennis socials are scheduled for the second Saturday of the month. There are men’s and women’s groups.

Tennis clinics are planned for children this year in June. Court surface maintenance is needed due to cracks and fencing could use some repairs. Mr. Devens will initiate discussions with the Committee and the Pickleball group on the advisability of merging the Pickleball group with the Tennis Committee, versus remaining as separate entities.

Mr. David reported that the F1 tornado in the County a couple of weeks ago resulted in two homes being condemned. The cooperation of neighbors, emergency personnel, law enforcement and non-profits was commendable in responding to the event.

Tennis Social Rescheduled

by MiďŹ&#x20AC; Devens, Chair, Tennis Committee The first Open Tennis Social of the year has been rescheduled to Saturday, June 10 at 9 AM. Tennis socials are held on the second Saturday of the month through September. Octoberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s social is generally an afternoon affair followed by the Annual Tennis Picnic.

Tennis socials are structured around open tennis play in a Round Robin format. Play starts at 9 AM and continues until about 11 AM. Partners are changed at 30 minute intervals. All levels of play are welcome, Tennis social play bears no resemblance to Davis Cup, or USTA tournament play. Water is provided if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bring your own.

Lions Club International (LCI) is proud to be fighting measles by providing low cost immunizations to individuals all around the world. LCI reports that â&#x20AC;&#x153;400 people die from measles each day; 16 deaths every hour.â&#x20AC;? Most measles deaths occur in unvaccinated children under the age of five. The good news is that for $1, a child can be vaccinated against measles.

This year, LCI, in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other groups, plans to raise $60 million, including matching funds, for immunizations, social mobilization, and advocacy.

Measles has largely been eradicated in Orange County because our citizens have been conscientious. However, we are still faced with continuing outbreaks of pertussis (whooping cough) and meningitis. Pertussis is highly contagious and causes uncontrollable, violent coughing. It can be fatal to infants.

Meningitis is an inflammation of membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. Fortunately effective vaccines are available and vaccination is recommended for adolescents between 11-18 years old.

Vaccinations are safe and effective. Studies which claimed to show significant health risks attributable to immunizations have been discredited.

There is broad agreement in the scientific and medical communities about the importance and safety of vaccinations for childhood diseases.

When you get your child vaccinated, you are also protecting the children of others throughout your community.

Those who qualify financially may receive free vaccinations at the Orange County Health Department or in area free clinics.

What can you do to protect your children and your family? ď&#x201A;ˇď&#x20AC; Contribute to the Lions â&#x20AC;&#x153;One shot â&#x20AC;&#x201C; One Lifeâ&#x20AC;? measles vaccination campaign by donating to LCI which will result in matching funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. ď&#x201A;ˇď&#x20AC; Make sure that your children and grandchildren have all of their vaccinations up to date including those for measles, pertussis, meningitis, and HPV. ď&#x201A;ˇď&#x20AC; Ask a Lion or a public health professional to come and speak about the importance of vaccinations to your organization.

Thursday, June 8 (7:30 PM) A Global Affair (MGM, 1964) Bob Hope stars as Frank Larrimore, an official at the United Nations in New York, who finds himself in charge of an infant that was abandoned in the building. Besides being an inexperienced bachelor having to cope with a baby, he has to determine what nationality the child is to have since he was abandoned on international territory. Directed and co-written by Jack Arnold, the cast of the comedy features Liselotte Pulver, who received a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe nomination for her performance, Yvonne DeCarlo, Michele Mercier and John McGiver.

Friday, June 9 (7:30 PM) Casino (Universal, 1995 – R-rated*) Martin Scorsese directed this epic crime drama about a corrupt Las Vegas casino. Robert De Niro stars as world-class gambling handicapper Sam “Ace” Rothstein; Joe Pesci as Mafia underboss Nicky Santoro, and Sharon Stone as Ace’s scheming, self-absorbed wife Ginger. The film is based on the non-fiction book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scorsese. Stone received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her performance. *No one under the age of 17 will be admitted without a parent or guardian.

The swimming season is upon us. Our pools will be opening Memorial Day weekend and, after the water warms up a bit, we will begin our water fitness program on Monday, June 12. If you have never tried water exercise, now is your chance! It is a fun and effective way in which to improve your health, flexibility and agility without harming the joints. And there is no sweating!

Registration for the classes will take place starting at 8:30 AM on Monday, June 12 at the Clubhouse Pool. The cost for a season pass is $125. Please bring a check made out to Carol Greeney, with Water Fitness on the memo line. Pay as you go is also an option: $7 a class, but even if you miss a week or two due to vacation, the season pass is still the most economical choice.

All classes are held at the Clubhouse Pool at 9 AM and 10 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from June 12 until September 1. Please note: there will be NO classes on August 7, 9 and 11.

Lake Currents May 26, 2017

In September 2013, Orange County began a process for planning development in the eastern end of the county now referred to as the Germanna-Wilderness Area. A Route 3 Steering Committee consisting of members of the Board of Supervisors, the Planning Commission and the Economic Development Authority began developing the plan for this area which eventually was called the GermannaWilderness Area Plan or GWAP. Throughout 2013 and 2014, the Steering Committee visited other well-developed areas in the state, sought the input of private sector developers, financial analysts and engineers and drafted the GWAP. GWAP is a long-term growth management plan for the next 50 years that creates the atmosphere for a competitive local economy; plans for adequate and appropriate public facilities and services; promotes and protects local historic and environmental assets; and, guides public and private investments to create an attractive and livable community. In December 2014, the GWAP was briefed at a town hall type meeting and public comments were received. After incorporating comments, the GWAP was formally presented at a public hearing and adopted as part of the Orange County Comprehensive Plan.

Since the GWAP was adopted, the Steering Committee has continued work to make this plan a reality. We have identified significant historical and cultural assets, made progress on water and sewer infrastructure planning, identified transportation issues, prepared economic incentives and drafted planning and zoning ordinance changes. At this point, we feel that it is appropriate to conduct another town hall meeting to let citizens know what has been done so far. It will also provide an opportunity to get more public input on issues of importance to citizens. The town hall meeting is planned for June 29 at Locust Grove Middle School. More information and public notices will be forthcoming.

As some of you may know, I am the Orange County Supervisor’s representative on the Dogwood Village Health Center Commission. A number of Lake of the Woods residents volunteer at Dogwood and some have also been patients or residents there. After many years, Vernon Baker, Dogwood’s Executive Director, has resigned to move on to bigger and better opportunities. During his tenure, Dogwood has maintained a fine reputation for excellent patient and resident care. Mr. Baker will be missed, but due to Dogwood’s excellent reputation, some very outstanding candidates applied to be his replacement.

The Commission has just hired Mr. Mark Morriss as the new Executive Director. His reputation and credentials are superb and we look forward to a continued standard of excellence at Dogwood.

I have recently tasted the following wines. They are not necessarily grouped in any sort of order, but are ones I really liked.

Clos Chapon, Vouvray Sec (dry), Loire Valley, France, Vintage 2016 – The Loire Valley produces such wonderful wines, dry whites, off-dry whites (slightly sweet), sparkling whites, and dry reds. This one is intriguing, with a fresh mouth-feel and a very pungent and fruity nose. Made from the Chenin Blanc grape, the flavors of quince and citrus make this wine outstanding.

Serve it with roasted chicken, baked fish, or grilled pork chops. Price: About $15 a bottle.

Quinta das Carvalhas Tinto Douro, Douro Valley, Portugal, Vintage 2013 - This dry red wine is a great example of the master winemaker’s art. Loads of very ripe black fruits are apparent in the aromas and on the palate. If you are looking for a wine to serve with grilled meats, this is a great choice. The flavors of ripe black plum and vanilla are very appealing! There are plenty of rich tannins and intensity in this beauty. This wine has been rated at 91 points in overall quality! Price: $15 a bottle.

Domaine Curniere Vacqueyras, Vacqueyras Village, Cȏte du Rhone, France, Vintage 2015 – The latest vintage from the Rhone Valley is incredible. The growing season was nearly perfect, producing outstanding wines at reasonable prices. Ripe and jammy aromas of lavender, black plum, blackberry, smooth oak, and even citrus gush from this wine. Intense flavors of pepper, spice, black fruit, smooth oak, and even hints of leather make it a sure bet for serving with grilled meats, steak, or stews. Aeration is definitely required. I was very impressed with this one! Price: About $20 a bottle.

Carson Ridge, Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles, Central Coast, California, Vintage 2016 – Another outstanding wine at a very affordable price.

This richly dark-red dry red is loaded with aromas of berries, followed by a fullflavored taste of ripe black fruit. The mouth-feel is on the creamy side, which is perfect for grilled meats, stews, and medium to heavy cheeses. Price: About $12 a bottle.

Black Box, Chardonnay, Monterey, California, Non-Vintage – There are a couple of reasons why I chose this gem. The first is that it is a very decent dry white wine, in a box that holds the equivalent of four regular-sized bottles!

The second reason is that it really is a very good wine – creamy in texture, with aromas and flavors of pears and pineapple, with a hint of citrus. The finish is smooth with a hint of oak. If you are looking for a great party wine that will please a crowd, this is the one for you. Price: About $15.50.
