LOW to Celebrate National Night Out – Bring the Kids! by Randy Schwabenbauer, Member, NNO Planning Group
On Tuesday, August 1, residents are invited to the Sweetbriar pavilion from 6 to 9 PM for LOW’s first National Night Out event. Representatives from local and state public safety agencies will be on hand to greet residents, display vehicles and equipment, and conduct demonstrations. Free hot dogs, popcorn and water will be provided. No pets are permitted at the event. Nationally, this will be the 34th National Night Out (NNO) crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out is a program of the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and currently involves over 16,500 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. National Night Out is designed to: heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and vigilant. More than 38 million people are expected to participate in “America’s Night Out Against Crime.” The LOW event will feature: • Sheriff Mark Amos and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office - a motorcycle, police cruiser and SUV. There will be a bloodhound tracking demonstration in which the dog will locate a “lost child” in the woods adjacent to the park. • Virginia State Police - two troopers and vehicles, as well as the Arson/Bomb Unit and robot. There will also be a VSP K-9 demonstration. • Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries, Law Enforcement Division – two officers, vehicles and a 30-foot patrol boat. • Chief Scott Walker and LOW Security – officers, a police vehicle and a patrol boat. • LOW Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company will display an engine and an ambulance. The K-9 demonstrations will begin at 7 PM. All demonstrations will take place on the soccer field behind the Community Center.

Junior Sailing Program campers learn to right a capsized sailboat during a capsize drill.
The LOW Sailing Club Junior Sailing Program recently completed training another round of young sailors at its two summer Sailing Camp sessions in late June and early July. Each week-long camp session gave 14 campers instruction in parts of the boat, rigging, boat safety, seamanship, boat handling and teamwork. The young sailors demonstrated their newly acquired skills in Optimist Pram, Sunfish, Laser and Zuma sailboats. In addition to basic sailing maneuvers like tacking and gybing, the campers were taught safety-related skills such as the safety position and getting out of irons, a condition that exists when attempting to sail too close to the wind results in loss of boat speed and steering control. In more than a dozen years operating the sailing camps, the Junior Sailing Program has trained several hundred young campers in the sport of sailing.
dwellingLIVE Visitor Management: Tips and Tricks #1 Q: What does “Verbal Confirmation Code” mean on my dwellingLIVE home page? Do I have to put something in there? A: The Verbal Confirmation Code is meant to be used as an additional layer of security and control on your dwellingLIVE account to ensure you have authorized someone to call in a guest. Security will request this code when receiving a phone call to add a guest to make sure that the individual on the phone is in fact authorized to call in a guest. This code should not simply be your name or address - it should be a unique word, phrase or number that only you know. This will help ensure guests are properly being authorized to visit your property. It is not a requirement, but the Association does strongly recommend using this to help secure your account. If you have populated it with your name or address, we recommend changing it to a unique word, phrase or number. Look for more dwellingLIVE Tips and Tricks in future issues and if you haven’t already, take a moment to sign up! It’s quick and easy. Entering guests via the online or mobile app is faster than calling them in! Contact Member Services at 972-2237 for assistance.
