Squishy’s Corner: Happenings at the Equestrian Center Hello again, Mr. Squishy here. I hope all of my faithful readers enjoyed a delicious treat for Valentine’s Day. I received Valentines from Miss Melissa, Miss Bridget and some of my riders, I felt so loved! I have had a blast meeting the new patrons who have stopped by the Equestrian Center.

I want to say that if you have been thinking about going horseback riding, or if you’d like to meet myself and my friends, please come out and see us. Staff are available to answer questions about the programs we offer.

I hear so many people in the barn say they didn’t know we host birthday parties. Well, we do and they are a BLAST! Birthday parties require a 2-hour long block. The first 30 minutes of the party is the best because that’s when Fancy and I get to show off how skilled we are at giving pony rides. The rest of the party is up to the family to facilitate. I have seen some awesome games played and crafts made. I usually get to share a cupcake with the birthday boy or girl-the second best part of the party!

Don’t forget that the Equestrian Center has new weekend hours for walk-ins: lessons at 10 and 11 AM, trail rides at 1, 2, and 3 PM, and Fancy and I will be doing pony rides all day!

Lastly, this is a friendly reminder to submit your Pony Camp applications in to the Equestrian Center to secure your spot for this summer. We have a few applications in so far and lots of interest has been sparked! The 2019 Summer Pony Camp session dates are June 24-July 1, July 1-5, July 8-12, July 15-19, July 22-26 and July 29-August 2. Thoughts from the Pro: Spring is Coming!

On Feb. 9, I was at the Fredericksburg Expo Center promoting our PGA Junior League for this summer. On Saturday I believe we had between 250 and 300 junior golfers participating for Junior Golf. Everyone enjoyed themselves and it was a great day!

Purchase your Annual Golf Membership now to get 14 months of golf for $1,600. If you believe what the Groundhog says, “Spring is coming soon!”

By purchasing your membership now, you increase your playing time by two months (March and April of this year), receive four guest passes, two free lessons, have your USGA handicap fee paid, and increase your buying power through a 10 percent discount in the Pro Shop and in Fareways Café.

Another option would be either purchasing a Twilight Membership or a Weekend and Holiday Membership. Each costs $950. The Twilight Membership is aimed at the working warrior. You can play any afternoon starting after noon.

You also can “Trade Up Program” and play 18-holes for $15 or 9-holes for $10 prior to twilight starting. The Weekend and Holiday Membership offers playing on weekends and holiday Fridays or Mondays. This is over 100 days that you can play golf! It is up to you to determine which membership is best for you. President’s Letter

Dear Members, We received the total amount of our direct losses (less the $1,000 insurance deductible) as a result of the actions by our former Director of Finance, Roy Mayberry. The insurance reimbursement was for $369,136.94. The summary of loss is as follows: Documented Misappropriated Funds Less Restitution Paid to LOWA by Mayberry Less Insurance Deductible Net Amount Received from Insurance

The funds were received, deposited, and cleared. This is an important event for our Association. Because the funds were misappropriated from the operating account, the Board plans to leave them in the operating accounts until such time as it can be determined what overall impact the incident will have on our finances at our fiscal year end, April 30, 2019.

In parallel with this, we are working with our annual auditing firm to finalize the FY17-18 audit. Once that impact is determined, any further necessary actions will be taken by the Board. In addition, our Treasurer, Bob Hoh leads an Ad Hoc Committee to improve internal financial controls.

Although this is good news, we have incurred some expenses as a result of the theft and have directed our finance staff to work toward a complete accounting of the total costs to the association. Acceptance of the funds from AIG does not prejudice our pursuit of costs incurred after the discovery of the former Director’s actions. Upon receipt of the insurance payment we also notified the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. The ongoing criminal investigation, conducted by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, is separate from this matter.

I wish to thank the many people who have worked toward this goal: all the current Board members, especially Bob Hoh, Treasurer, Leighton Cumming, immediate former Board President, Larry Cole, our current Finance Director, Laurie Doane, former Controller, Phil Rodenberg, General Manager, Christopher Haney, Forensus Group and staff, and Frank Rokocz, Finance Committee member, to name but a few.

At a Jan. 30 member forum, two members expressed a concern that we had mold - black mold - in the Lower Level Clubhouse. We hear this concern from time to time. LOWA hired an environmental health firm to test the indoor air quality. The lab results are excellent - no mold spores were detected.

Over the years, the Maintenance Staff has worked to chase down odors to improve the indoor air quality in our circa 1960s Clubhouse’s Lower Level.

Fitness Center Survey Results

The Fitness Center Survey was a staff-driven initiative designed to gather pertinent, real-time, information needed to make key decisions about staffing, hours of operation and fees prior to the opening of the new Fitness Center.

The survey was conducted between Jan. 10 and Feb. 4. The survey was sent out to all members via email, Facebook, Lake Currents & LOWA.org. A total of 704 Members submitted a survey response, either via the electronic survey option or in paper format.

A few of the key takeaways from the survey were that most households with fitness center memberships had one or two members who used the fitness center and that mornings are the peak usage hours.

The Finance Committee advises the Board on financial management and policy issues. The committee also provides analyses and projections to aid the Board in managing the effective use of Members’ assessment.

LGA News

by Heather Kuzma, Publicity Chair, LGA The Ladies Golf Association golfing season will be here sooner than you think. After this long, cold winter, we have something to look forward to. The season will open with our spring luncheon on Friday, March 29 at 11 AM at the Clubhouse. Look for the signup sheet and details in the ladies’ lounge at the Woods Center. If you are new to LOW and interested in golf, the LGA is a wonderful organization. The ladies have an organized outing every Tuesday from April through October. We are a very friendly, welcoming group and would love to have you join us.

LGA season dues are payable now. If you haven’t paid your dues yet, make your check for $25 payable to LOW LGA, and fill out a registration form. You can pick up a form in the ladies’ lounge at the Woods Center.

Deposit the filled out form and your check in the box in the ladies’ lounge.

Our Opening Day Scramble will take place on Tuesday, April 2. Sign up in the ladies’ lounge at the Woods Center. Start time in April is 9 AM; sign in by 8:30.

Many great events are planned for the 2019 season. Save the dates of June 4 and 5 for the Member/Guest Tournament. This year’s theme is Rhinestone Cowgirl. Chair Karen Woods and her committee are working hard planning for this super fun event. It is not too early to invite your guest partner to lock in the date.

If you want to give golf a try, our Farm Team, led by Nancy King, is the perfect place to start. It’s a non-intimidating way to learn the basics and find out if golf is for you. Our pro, Rea Hargraves, gives a lesson each week, and then the group plays a few holes with mentors from the LGA. They meet at the practice area the first and third Wednesday at 4:30 PM from May through September 18. Call Nancy at 540-972-0984 for more info, or if you would like to be a mentor.

LOW Book Club

Nolan, Member, LOW Book Club The murder of a beautiful young woman in a small Minnesota town in 1961, and the myriad effects of this seemingly random act on the town and the victim’s family are brilliantly detailed in Ordinary Grace, LOW Book Club’s selection for its March 13 meeting. The events in the novel, by William Kent Krueger, are recalled and narrated, 30 years later, by the victim’s younger brother. Filled with suspense and emotion, the work is a powerful departure from the author’s popular Cork O’Connor mystery series.

The book is available in all three local library systems (Orange County, Culpeper County and Central Rappahannock Regional).

The LOW Book Club meets at 1 PM on the second Wednesday of the month in the meeting room of the Wilderness Library. All are welcome, and no prior notification or attendance commitment is necessary!

My red 2007 Mustang convertible was the fulfillment of a 50-year dream.

The 1964 Mustang was introduced while I was a struggling college student.

Marriage, children, and limited income made it an impractical purchase in the years that followed. But in April 2016 my dream came true, and I finally had a Mustang parked in my garage. Not just any Mustang, but the red convertible I had always longed for.

What is YOUR Mustang story? Let’s get together and talk. I am proposing that we start a LOW Mustang group, or club. Over the past couple years, I have talked with some of you Mustang owners at the mail boxes, in the Food Lion parking lot, and other venues around the lake.

After getting my Pony, I joined a 300-member club in Fairfax and have become one of their directors. In April, I will be heading to North Carolina for four days to experience the grand opening of the 30,000 square foot Mustang Museum. The Fairfax club will be hosting a National Mustang Show at the Fredericksburg Convention Center this coming Labor Day weekend.

We are expecting up to 500 Mustangs to be on display there.

If you would be interested in establishing a small local club, please give me a call. At the outset I envision a monthly get together for dinner, maybe at the Clubhouse. Wouldn’t it be great to have all of our treasured Mustangs on display, side by side in the lower parking lot? Or how about a Sunday brunch meeting? I am aware of one person in LOW who has a show car, and another who is the original owner of a 1964 model fastback.

You do not have to be a current Mustang owner, or even a former owner; just be interested in these iconic cars to join us in celebration of a 55-year history, and the production of over 10,000,000 Mustangs.

It is a full house every Monday night as Lake of the Woods Square Dance Club hosts the beginners’ level square dance lessons. The 14 new students who began lessons in September are learning the joy of square dancing under the guidance of our professional caller, Chris Stacy. New students are also assisted each week by the Square Dance Club “Angels” – those who have mastered both the mainstream (or basic) steps and the plus-level program calls.

The club’s growing membership holds dances on the second, fourth and fifth Friday of every month. We also hold special dances for Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, spring and so on. The Death by Chocolate Valentine’s Day dance is coming up on Friday, Feb. 22.

The LOW Square Dance Club has been around for over 45 years and members (and dancers from other communities) are rather enthusiastic about their dancing skills. This is not the square dancing you might remember from grade school. It’s now called Modern Western Square Dancing. Noted medical groups such as the Mayo Clinic and WebMD cite square dancing’s many benefits, both to your health and to your social life. It is a great way to exercise both your brain and your body, a not-too-strenuous form of exercise, and no special dancing skills or abilities are required! There are many social benefits to square dancing, as square dance clubs tend to be a friendly and warm group of people. In fact, square dancing has been described as Friendship set to music.

Volunteer Drivers Honored at Luncheon

On Jan. 31, volunteer drivers from around the region - Culpeper, Fauquier, Orange, Rappahannock and Madison Counties - were honored for their service. Aging Together, Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services and Foothills Area Mobility System joined forces in thanking the men and women who give their time to get senior citizens and others to medical and other critical appointments.

Nearly 50 individuals attended the luncheon at the Culpeper Senior Center and were treated to not only delicious food and a gift card, but also to a comedy routine by Madison Senior Center Supervisor Shirley Workman.

Volunteer drivers are affiliated with the Care-A-Van program through RRCS, Rapp Rides, Rapp Med Rides, LOWLINC, VolTran, and Rapp At Home. RRCS also has food delivery volunteers.

There is always a need for additional volunteer drivers. If you like to drive, have a valid driver’s license with auto insurance, and are 21 or over, please consider this volunteer opportunity. Volunteer driving is a simple, lowcost, but high-impact way of giving back to your community.

It’s time to make it happen. Behind the scenes, there is a team of club members who are focused on making a personal and professional difference in their lives. Each member joins Toastmasters for a different reason, and each outcome is unique, but the purpose remains the same. Perhaps more confidence in public speaking, developing stronger presentation skills or something as simple as a seasonal goal to complete a dream. Nothing has to be concrete when you become a Toastmaster, because you can stroll at your own personal pace. No one is chasing you with a book in their hand to meet their goal.

The rewards in Toastmasters are rich. The most recognized accomplishment is completing the icebreaker speech, because that is the first of many and you can see how you have stretched yourself out of your personal comfort zone. Wouldn’t it feel great to be able to say, “I did it.”

LOW Community

The LOW Veterans Club will conduct its monthly meeting on Thursday, Feb. 28 at the Community Center starting at 7 PM. Topics of discussion will include regular club business as well as the Department of Veterans Affairs plans to make it easier for armed services veterans, family members, or caregivers to explore, apply for, and manage their respective veteran benefits.

Our scheduled guest speaker is Jenny A. Marra. She has over 18 years of experience as a Geospatial Intelligence and All-Source Analyst providing a full range of finished intelligence products supporting the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Her presentation should be both informative and entertaining. Veterans Club members and guests, as well as LOW residents, are encouraged to attend.

Veterans Club membership is open to all LOW resident veterans who have been honorably discharged, retired, or are currently on active duty or serving in our reserve forces. The Veterans Club meets each month to promote fellowship, patriotism, and provide veterans-related information.

The club actively participates in LOW celebrations such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Veterans Day. Several field trips are planned for 2019.

Annual club membership dues of $5 are due for current members. Dues payment can be made at our club meetings or mailed to our treasurer, Gil Churchill, at 110 Cumberland Circle. Initial membership dues are $25, which includes a LOW VETS cap, nametag, and first year annual dues.

Free Programs at the Wilderness Library

Library books are free, no passport is required, and all you need is a comfy spot to sit. Start your next adventure at the library by participating in our Adult Reading Program, Reading Adventure Awaits, which begins Feb. 11 and runs until March 23.

It’s free and open to all adults (18 and over or high school graduates). Each participant can earn small travel-themed prizes for every book read/listened to. March is Irish American Heritage Month

U.S. Presidents have proclaimed March to be Irish-American Heritage Month for more than a quarter century. Also, the Governor of Virginia traditionally proclaims March as IAHM. In 2018 the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution officially recognized March to be IAHM. In the 19th Century, especially during An Gorta Mor (The Great Hunger), Irish families able to escape starvation emigrated, mostly to America. They were poor, illiterate, mostly Catholic, and not welcome in many cities. A branch of the Ancient Order of Hibernians organized in America helped the Irish assimilate, learn the English language, and find employment. Ultimately, the Irish became inextricably linked to the development of America in fields ranging from literature, education and science, to politics and military leadership.

The theme for IAHM in 2019 is Irish in the Revolutionary War. Colorful, informative displays and Hibernians able to discuss this theme and other topics related to Irish/Irish-American history will be present at:

For more than 30 years, the General Thomas F. Meagher Division has represented AOH in our area. Under the motto “Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity,” the division has donated about $100,000 to local charities and for scholastic awards. Funding derives from community support for the annual Trip for Two to Ireland Raffle and the Shamrock Charity Golf Classic, played at Meadows Farms Golf Course in April.

On Monday, March 11, the LOW Garden Club will hold two meetings.

The regular meeting will be held at 1 PM in the Great Hall of the Clubhouse, and our program will be Donna Pienkowski, the “worm lady.” Donna will speak on the benefits of having worms in your garden. Clearly worms make the birds happy, but I expect Donna’s focus will be on benefits to the soil.

The Garden Club will also host an evening outreach meeting on March 11, from 6:30 to 8 PM, at the Community Center. Interested in learning about what we do? Join us! Are you an inactive or past Garden Club member?

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and, if he predicted right, spring will be here in three weeks. Shadows come in all shapes and sizes, but if your shadow could talk, what would your shadow tell you to change? Would it encourage you to look more closely at your past life, your family, your finances, your decisions in life? Would you want your shadow to prepare you for the future and what to expect? What kind of questions would you ask your shadow? If my shadow had told me my future, I may have planned more for retirement, education savings and general life affairs.

In March, we are adding Knowledge Club to the monthly calendar for am and pm meetings. Our next meeting will be on March 14 at 6:30 PM. Our guest speaker will be a Spotsylvania attorney who will share the importance of having a Will, Power of Attorney, and Advanced Medical Directives when you do not have an estate plan. On March 19 at 10 AM, our Medicare expert will be available to answer questions for the end-of-season enrollment for Medicare. The LOW AARP Chapter is sponsoring a bus trip to a Washington Nationals baseball game at Nationals Park. The date is Thursday, May 16, and the opponent is the New York Mets. The game starts at 1:05 PM, and participants need to be on the bus in the Clubhouse lower level parking lot by 10 AM. The trip is open to the entire LOW community. $75 per person covers the bus ride and a game ticket. You may include as many other people in your order as you wish as long as space is available. The Players are moving right along toward our April play, The Mousetrap, a murder mystery by Agatha Christie. Auditions are over, the cast has been selected, and rehearsal schedules have been set by Director Barbara Cochran, who previously directed Driving Miss Daisy. This particular play has been performed continuously in London’s West End since 1952, and it has the longest initial run of a play in history. The story has a very twisted end; audiences will be asked not to reveal the ending once they leave the Community Center.

Some of you may have read about the difficulties with China substantially limiting the amount of recyclable material that they accept. That has affected recyclers in this country, and, as a result, Orange County will be changing the recycling company that we work with. This actually has some positives for citizens who are conscientious about their recycling efforts. Next month, Orange County will move to Single Stream Recycling. It will no longer be necessary to separate newspaper, white paper, cans, plastics, glass and cardboard. They will all go into the same bin. It will still be necessary to flatten the cardboard to minimize the space taken up in the bins, but now non-corrugated cardboard such as cereal boxes can also be recycled. Non-recyclable material such as hazardous waste (including electronic equipment), Styrofoam, clothing, food waste and plastic bags still must be placed in the compactor. Another strange category that is non-recyclable is the plastic caps that go on bottles.

This is because the plastic in the tops is of a different material than the bottle itself, causing difficulty during the recycling process. Also, removing the tops ensures that liquid has been removed and allows for the bottles to be crushed/compacted, meaning more material can be transported. If the tops are left on, they can become projectiles when the bottles are compacted.

Just remove the tops and throw them in the compactor.

Orange County has also planned some additional events for disposal of unwanted stuff. On April 13, there will be an electronic recycling event at the landfill. A shredding event will be held on May 4 at the East Orange Ruritan building on the corner of Routes 20 and 522. There will also be a tire recycling amnesty day at the landfill on June 15. In the fall the county will host another hazardous waste collection day at the landfill. That event will also accept empty or non-functional fire extinguishers. Details on these other events will be provided as those dates approach.

Are you tired of waiting in lines at the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, or do you have difficulty getting to the DMV office? DMV will be coming to Lake of the Woods on March 6. They will be at the Community Center from 10 AM to 3 PM and will be able to handle driver licenses, ID cards, address changes, disabled placards, vehicle titles and registrations, EZ Pass transponders and even hunting and fishing licenses. You can also handle many of these transactions online by going to www.dmvNOW.com.

Are you interested in earning a little extra income? The Census Bureau is accepting applications for individuals to conduct the 2020 Census. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, have a valid Social Security number, have a computer and email address, and pass a background check.

Most jobs also require that you have a vehicle. Some other requirements are described on the application website. The pay rate varies in different locations, but for Orange County the rate is $15 per hour with earnings paid weekly. Hours are flexible.
