President’s Letter by Leighton Cumming
There have been several news reports about the Netherlands Ambassador’s recent visit to Orange County. I wanted to share with you my experience during Ambassador Henne Schuwer’s visit to several places in the County and to Lake of the Woods. Ambassador Schuwer’s first stop in Orange County March 23 was at Battlefield Farm, a large greenhouse flower business managed by a Dutch émigré. Since many Americans think of the Netherlands when they see tulips, it was fitting to have tulips and other flowers surrounding the speakers. The Ambassador spoke of his country’s connections to the United States, pointing out that his country is the second largest agricultural exporter in the world, and that Orange County is largely agricultural. Orange County was named for William IV of Orange, upon his 1734 marriage to the daughter of James II of England. Embassy staff searched records at the Library of Congress and finally found the original land grant. A framed copy of that grant on sheepskin was presented to the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
After a tour of some of the greenhouses, the group moved to Montpelier for lunch and a round table discussion of mutual interests. Questions ranged from how to manage water issues, to possible exchanges for economic and cultural reasons. The Netherlands Market featured the following Dutch-American entrepreneurs: Battlefield Farms Inc., Deep Roots Home and Garden Center, Coyote Hole Ciderworks, Moerings Sempergreen, American Color Inc. and Fresh2O Growers. Business owners were on hand to educate visitors about their products and to provide some free samples. The event was coordinated by Ron Linker, Deputy Head of Public Diplomacy, Press and Cultural affairs for the Embassy of the Netherlands. He is also a member of Lake of the Woods.

Saturday, March 24, Lake of the Woods was honored to have the Ambassador and his staff visit us. A Dutch market was set up on Clubhouse beach and approximately 200 LOW members visited the market. Although free samples were handed out at the market, several of the businesses at the market sell their products through local stores. Lastly, Ambassador Schuwer was taken on a boat ride around the Lake and thanked everyone for their warm hospitality.
