Lake of the Woods members have an amazing amount of talent, experience, and skills in many areas. The Board of Directors needs this caliber of person to help keep our community moving forward into the future. Yes, it will take some of your volunteer time, but you will find the experience very rewarding, a bit frustrating at times, and fun at other times. We have many challenges ahead of us with inflation, aging infrastructure, changing demographics of our community, and many more. LOW needs your help to tackle these head on.

President’s Letter

Thank you to all our members who have cleaned up the debris from Winter Storm Frida. It was an unexpected event that we hope to never see again. I also want to commend our staff for their work in getting LOWA cleaned up and ready for the change in weather.

I am thankful that spring is finally making an appearance.

The Board will be considering approving amendments to Regulation XV, Establishment of User Fees, Assessment Settlement and Other Charges at our May 7 meeting. A lot of work has been put into updating our rules and regulations by a working group. The General Manager and members of the group from various committees are doing an excellent job of this herculean task.

Boating season begins soon. For those with boats, please attach your new sticker to the boat before May 1. Sometimes in haste to get launched for the first time, we forget this important step. The last thing you want on your first day on the water is a summons and fine!

The latest “I heard” from the past week: 1. “I heard” they are closing 9.9. False, there are no plans to close 9.9.

2. “I heard” the only reason Fiberlync is not in LOWA is because the Board won’t let them in. False. Fiberlync is building out their already committed areas at their pace and adding more areas per their business plan. They have been very successful. We have followed their progress from the beginning and would welcome them in LOWA. Many times, the “I heard” begins with questions or statements on social media. These morph into many versions, like the old game of telephone.

Again, the best source for accurate information is always from the LOWA offices and LOWA official media.

One final thing I am thankful for is that Wordle is only available once per day.

1. Main Gate Congestion. Easter Weekend was a busy time at the Main Gate with over 660 invited guest arrivals each day on Saturday and Sunday. This in addition to those invited guests that already had a dash pass. To help keep the long lines moving, Security Chief Scott Walker placed officers up the drive lane to direct pass holders to the member lane. So how do we tackle the Main Gate congestion issues?

Two points: First, if every member used TEK Control instead of calling Security we could save guest check-in time at the gate and the expense of an access control officer answering phone calls.

Second, LOWA has hired A. Morton Thomas Associates of Richmond to conduct a traffic study to come up with solutions for relieving congestion at the Main Gate, with primary focus on the Main Gate but with an eye towards a possible Third Gate in the future. The study gets underway this month and AMT will give a progress report to the Board in June and a final report in August.

2. Park After Hours – Back in the day, as they say, LOWA used to chain off parks to prevent access after the 11 PM closing time. We will soon be returning to that practice at Hollyfield Park and Sweetbriar Park to help prevent after-hours mischief. Park hours are open from 7 AM to 11 PM. LOWA Security will lock and unlock the gates accordingly.

3. Surveillance Cameras – LOWA has surveillance cameras deployed in common areas to help protect Association assets and identify trespassers and vandals. We have surveillance cameras at the Main and Back Gates, at/inside amenity buildings, and at other key common areas such as the marinas and pools. LOWA Maintenance, Administration, and Security just deployed a new surveillance camera in Sweetbriar Park to help prevent and resolve vandalism and bad behavior issues. Anyone caught vandalizing property can be suspended by the General Manager from use of the amenity for one month, and for a longer period by the Board of Directors. (See LOWA Regulation I.G.) 4. Delivery Drivers and Speeding Summonses: LOWA Administration and Security are working together on a more efficient way of holding delivery drivers accountable for speeding summonses. We recently added a Square Solutions QR code to the Security summons. (See below.) The QR code enables the driver to quickly go online, using a smartphone, and pay the speeding summons with a credit card through Square. You must have your summons number to pay online. This saves LOWA the time and cost of mailing follow-up letters to the driver and the lot owner. It saves the lot owner considerable inconvenience as well. LOWA is also working with TEK Wave to tighten up the use of the TEK Control barred list as a way of turning away drivers who do not pay speeding summonses.

It will be held on Monday, May 16, at the Clubhouse at 9:30 AM for coffee and refreshments, and then 10 AM for the general meeting.

Plan to attend and hear what will be happening with our chapter from this time forward. We are having Jim Dau from the state organization here to give us input on AARP’s position regarding the COVID-19/Omicron issue. As you have heard, a lot of areas are opening and the mandate of wearing masks has been recinded.

On a beautiful spring weekend, the LOW pickleball courts were abuzz with excitement during the Just for fun-Take 2 pickleball tournament.

This time around, the Pickleball Club wanted to add an element of charity to all the fun, and teamed up with the Wilderness Food Pantry. Because we are a pickleball club, it was a natural fit to collect donations of condiments for the pantry. We were told this is often a not thought of, but very needed, supply.

After an almost 2-year COVID break, the Lake of the Woods Sailing Club has resumed their schedule for most activities this sailing season. We kick off our season with our Spring Series, racing most Saturday mornings at 11 AM. The first race of the series is Sat. April 23, and it runs through Jun 4. We interrupt that series for our Annual Invitational Regatta, a one-day event on April 30.

A fun, atypical race is our annual Around Turtle Island Challenge race on July 30. We race the length of the lake, including around Turtle Island and finish back close to the dam. Because there is little wind or water around the island, this race allows competitors to propel their boats in that area with any means possible, except motors. They can paddle, pole, or get out and swim to push or pull their boats around the island. Once around the island, the sailing resumes to the finish line.

Besides racing, the club also has regular informal sailing days. You might spot the club boats sailing along the club house most any Wednesday during the summer. The club also does an annual Parade of Sail where the boats try to sail in single file, a feat much harder to do than it sounds. They visit the nooks and coves of the lake where they typically would not race.

Besides sailing, the club is also a very active social club. Indeed, many members of the club don’t even own a sailboat but do enjoy the comradery of the sailing community. The club hosts an informal gathering at the Clubhouse at 4:30 PM, every third Wednesday of the month. Everyone is welcome to join in, and one might hear a “sea story” or two. Anyone that might like to try sailing, or has an interest in sailing, can contact the Sailing Club Commodore, Dan Kilgore, 540 755 2885, for more information and even a try at sailing on Lake of the Woods.

As descendants of that remarkable generation, we would also like to help our fellow Americans to explore their family d in the histories and discover the roles their ancestors played rical founding of the United States. So, among other historical lowing projects we are working on, we will be offering the following opportunities to everyone interested: For the next few months, beginning April 23, the i i Community Genealogy Study Group will be offering assistance in finding your patriots! Lake Authors of the Wilderness Spotlights Local Author

This month, the Lake Authors of the Wilderness Club spotlights one of our members, author and artist Elena Pratt, as she prepares for her upcoming Art Show & Book Signing Event. Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 7, for her show titled Nostalgia and Nature, at the Vision Health Center O.D. across from the LOW main gate. All are welcome at the opening reception Saturday, May 7, from 1 to 4 PM. The show will remain on display for three months.

Elena Pratt is a Lake Author and a Lake Artist. She and her husband Ted have lived in the lake since 2017. While Elena has over 35 years of experience performing in musical theater, in more recent years she has found new outlets for her creativity. She began by painting Pokémon characters in a Pop Art style and painting rocks to leave around the neighborhood. She and Ted spent lots of time together in 2020. One day, he decided that people needed to have their spirits lifted, so he donned his inflatable T-rex costume that Elena had given him for Valentine’s Day. Elena supported Ted in his mission to spread joy and dressed in an inflatable unicorn costume. At least once a week they walked around the neighborhood, waving at cars and people. They have been nicknamed the LOW Tedisaurus Rex and the Elenacorn. During this time, Elena started posting snippets of conversations she and Ted were having to Facebook because, much like children, Ted says the darndest things. Almost immediately, friends were saying, “This needs to be a book!”, so she assembled them together. Conversations with Ted is 100 conversations between Elena and Ted. You can pick it up and read just a few pages when you need a laugh. Our LGA Annual Meeting/Spring Luncheon was held on Friday, April 1.

A special thanks to our Hospitality Committee: Linda Compton, Chair; Garnet Brannan, Sue Collie, Margaret Darby, Julia Hooper, Phyllis Sakole, and Kathy Smith. They did an outstanding job! The decorations were beautiful, it was very well organized, and lunch was delicious. The event chairs and board members presented information on the LGA Activities for 2022. Our special guests were Eric Barnes and Kim Morefield.

Unfortunately, due to the weather, our opening day was postponed, but that did not dampen our enthusiasm. It was postponed until Tuesday, April 12.

Our Spring Tournament will be three Tuesdays in a row, starting May 10, and continuing on May 17 and 24. Your winning score will be based on the best two gross and net scores out of the three. The cost is $5 to participate.

Sign-up sheets will be posted in the Ladies Lounge on April 19. You will have until Sunday, May 8, to sign up. There will be sign-up sheets for 9- and 18hole ladies’ groups.

Please plan to attend the LGA 50th Anniversary Cocktail Party on May 20, from 4 to 6 PM at the Clubhouse. Appetizers and choice of one featured beverage ticket included in the $20 cost. Invite a guest and plan to attend.

Sign up starts April 20, and the deadline is May 9.

Our Fifty and Still Nifty Member Guest Tournament and Social will be June 7 for the Social and June 8 for the Tournament. Balloons to the Rescue: Friends of Wildlife at the Lake Solve a Fox Problem

Lions Support Worldwide Disaster Assistance, Ukrainian Refugees

by Linda & David Sam, and Deanne Lawrence, Members, Friends of Wildlife at the Lake The Problem A fox was leaving small animal carcasses at the door on a resident’s deck. She knew the culprit was a fox, as she’d seen it several times, at least once with a squirrel in its mouth. Efforts to deter the behavior—spraying peppermint, installing flashing lights, and spraying vinegar—although all good ideas, didn’t work to discourage this fox. The resident was also concerned that the fox could get under the deck through small openings. She didn’t mind the fox being around, but did not appreciate the “gifts” being left on her deck. So, she reached out to our group for help.

The Suggestions Our team learned that foxes sometimes mark territory in this way. Hazing was suggested as a deterrent, but the behavior was occurring when the resident was away. It was also suggested that baby gates or ex-pens be installed to keep the fox off the deck. Carolyn Wilder from Wildlife Rescue League advised that mylar balloons can be used to scare foxes from an area. Members of our group (Deanne Lawrence and Melissa Kovach) visited the house to look under the deck for evidence of a den—none was found; however a dead carcass was found at an opening and removed.

The Solution The resident decided to try tying Mylar balloons to deck entrances.

Balloons to the rescue! No more “gifts” received! The resident is also planning to have a contractor install gates on deck entrances and to seal off any openings that currently allow access under the deck.

Remember, balloons can also be used when foxes have moved into an unsafe location, or the property owner just doesn’t want them there. Foxes prepare a backup den in the area and can relocate themselves in emergency situations. Please remember it’s not okay for humans to relocate them.

We were happy to assist in solving this problem in a way that helped both the homeowner and the fox. A definite win-win. Having a problem/concern with wildlife? Please reach out for assistance.

World Relief Saturday, an annual event unique to Lake of the Woods Lions Club, is a way that the club can reach out to offer help outside the local community. When natural disasters strike, Lions Clubs are among the first to offer help. The Lions Clubs International Foundation offers assistance in a variety of ways, including major catastrophe, emergency, community recovery, and disaster preparedness grants.

On Sept. 18, 2021, Lake of the Woods Lions held its third annual Photos provided World Relief Saturday. 100% of the Lions man their Outdoor Sales proceeds from that morning’s yard sale were donated to support LCIF’s Display for their World Relief worldwide disaster relief programs.

With sales of $2,216 and $936 in cash donations, LOW Lions was able to send a $3,152 check to LCIF in support of this important effort.

Because of the overwhelming need to aid and support Ukrainian refugees, LOW Lions designated March 19 as a special World Relief Saturday. This was no ordinary Saturday. Shoppers came determined to buy and were generous with their donations for the Ukrainian Refugees Fund. Sales reached $2,971 and, along with cash donations from customers and club members, LOW Lions was able to send a check for $26,545 to the LCIF Refugees and Displaced Persons Fund for Ukraine. Stage Alive! Meet Emmet Cahill

LOW Arts is moving forward each month with enrichment activities designed to satisfy the artistic curiosity of our members. On April 14, LOW Arts organized the first in our Art Walks series. We started with lunch at Amy’s Café, then ventured up the hill to Belmont for a guided tour of the home, studio, and gallery of Gari and Corrine Melchers. Although well-connected as a portrait artist, Gari also painted scenes close to home, with a special interest in images of mothers and children. We are amazed at the artistic experiences close to Lake of the Woods and hope to open that door by organizing future explorations though our Art Walks series.

Beginning May 3, LOW Arts once again will have our display at the Wilderness Branch Library. Take a moment to look at the display case as you enter the library to discover the talent behind LOW Arts. All art will be for sale directly through the artist. Contact information will be next to each artwork.

Our Fareways Cafe’ exhibit continues to draw attention. So, while having lunch, browse the walls and remember that all artwork is for sale there too, through direct contact with the artist. Thank you to all those who have supported LOW Arts through your purchases; it matters.

Our artist in the spotlight for our May 2 meeting will be photographer Laura O’Leary. Join us at 2 PM in classroom 2 of the Community Center. She will discuss how to photograph art for submission to galleries or online sales sites; the all-important first step in presenting our art to the outside world.

On Saturday, April 23, at 7:30 PM, Stage Alive! is proud to present Ireland’s Most Exciting Young Tenor, Emmet Cahill. News of his sold-out debut concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall has turned heads with audiences throughout North America. He is quickly building a reputation for being the golden voice of this generation.

Emmet takes the audience on a musical journey, allowing them to connect with their most cherished memories through beautiful songs like Danny Boy, When Irish Eyes Are Smiling, and My Wild Irish Rose, to name but a few. His powerful classical voice comes to the fore when performing Broadway hits such as Bring Him Home and Music of The Photo provided Night and tender, nostalgic favorites Emmet Cahill will perform for such as Moon River and Some Stage Alive! April 23 at Eastern Enchanted Evening.

He was scheduled to be our bonus concert for new subscribers for the 2022-23 season, but Mother Nature threw us a curve when we were forced to reschedule America’s Sweethearts to Tuesday, June 7. Brochures for the new season were already at the printers, and rather than confuse the issue, we decided to offer a double feature. Brochures were mailed on April 9 and are available at the Wilderness Branch Library and the Holcomb Building. New subscribers by April 23 may attend both concerts, thereby seeing eight concerts for the cost of six. You may preview all eight concerts at stagealive.org.

The Cahill concert will be held in the Eastern View High School auditorium, and the America’s Sweethearts in the Culpeper County High School auditorium. Both schools are handicapped accessible and have ample free parking. For information, please phone me at 540-972-7866.

The Players want to thank all the patrons, sponsors, and audience for making this show a hit. A special thanks goes to the Stoney Lonesome Boys’ Band for their musical backup for Dillard’s singing. We had great audiences for all the performances. Although this show is over, we do have another show coming up in November.

Scrooge, the musical will make its debut in mid-November. Auditions for this show will be held on August 21 at 2 PM and August 22 at 7 PM in the Community Center. There will be more information as we get closer to that date. There will also be information on our website: www.lowplayers.org, as we get closer to the dates.

In the meantime, starting on April 23, the Show Stoppers singers will be entertaining diners on the deck at the Clubhouse. You can make reservations through the Clubhouse.

Stephen J. Farnsworth, professor of political science and international affairs and director of the Center for Leadership and Media Studies at the University of Mary Washington, will offer his assessment of the first year of the Biden presidency at the Community Center on Saturday, April 30.

One of the few political scientists who focus on Virginia politics, Dr. Farnsworth’s research has direct policy implications for both politicians and the news media. He handles hundreds of media contacts a year on local, state, and international matters, and appears in or on such outlets as C-SPAN, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, National Public Radio, and PBS News Hour.

He holds a Ph.D. degree and a master’s degree from Georgetown University and bachelor’s degrees from both the University of Missouri and Dartmouth College.

Farnsworth is the author or co-author of seven books on the presidency, the mass media, and public opinion. His most recent book, written with Robert Lichter, is Late Night with Trump: Political Humor and the American Presidency, published by Routledge Press.

Bluebells make their spring appearance.

From the LOW Garden Club field trip to admire Bluebells and enjoy a sip of wine, to a tree planting on Arbor Day, to a program on Bluebirds, April started with a flourish. Much more is ahead.

First up is the Joy of Spring flower show on Saturday, April 30, from noon to 4 PM, that is open to the community.

Then, on Saturday May 14, LOW Garden Club offers the spring plant sale.

And finally, on Saturday, May 21 at 10 AM in the Clubhouse portico, the Clubhouse and community will celebrate the grand reopening of the renovated Clubhouse Garden.

Behind the scenes, as the club prepares for these events, members are also collecting plastic bags, newspaper sleeves, etc., to be recycled for a park bench, as well as Pennies for Pines. Both will be collected at meetings.

The Lake of the Woods Garden Club meets the second Monday of the month at 1 PM in the Great Hall of the Clubhouse. Guests are welcome and should tell Security they are here for the meeting.

The LOW Garden Club is a member of the Shenandoah District of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs as well as the National Federation of Garden Clubs.

The LOW Veterans Club will conduct its next meeting on Thursday, April 28, in the lower level of the Clubhouse at 7 PM. The featured guest speaker will be Major General John M. Epperly, currently assigned as Deputy Commanding General at Army National Guard, U.S. Army Futures Command.

Epperly is responsible for synchronizing Guard priorities, policy guidance, and resources within Army Futures Command, and aligning Active Guard and Reserve efforts to provide Army modernization. His military background includes graduating from the United States Military Academy and subsequently serving in the United States, Korea, Kuwait, and Iraq, completing two combat tours in the Arabian Gulf Region.

His topic of discussion is Modernizing the U.S. Army for Great Competition and Conflict. The presentation should be informative as well as entertaining.

The long-awaited National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir is now open to the public. The museum reflects the service and sacrifice of the American Soldier. The LOW Veterans Club encourages all residents to view and experience the individual and group history and preserve for future generations the price of freedom.

The museum is located on 84 rolling acres of Virginia countryside. Its impressive stainless steel and glass exterior and 185,000 square foot interior uses advanced interactive exhibits to highlight the 247 years of Army history.

The museum identifies the role of the U.S. Army in wars, armed conflicts, and peacetime.

The Army Museum docents provide free guided tours at 10:15 AM and 1:15 PM daily. These tours describe 12 different exhibits illustrating the Army’s significant role in American history. The individual tours last approximately 50 minutes. Visit the Welcome Desk to obtain a free tour ticket. Free museum tickets must be requested in advance.

Superintendent Search

In January, Orange County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Cecil Snead announced his intention to retire on June 30. Dr. Snead has been superintendent since 2018, when he replaced Dr. Brenda Tanner on her retirement. I want to thank Dr. Snead for making his retirement announcement early, as it gives the school board adequate time to search for a replacement.

One of the most important jobs of the school board is selecting a new superintendent. In February, the school board hired the Virginia School Board Association to assist in the superintendent search. VSBA is a private, non-stock corporation based in Charlottesville that provides services to support local school boards. The school board has used VSBA’s search service to hire our last three superintendents, and the results have been outstanding. VSBA’s advice was to take our time and get it right. To that end, the school board has established a timeline for the search.

Some of the search happens behind closed doors, but the procedures we follow are very public. In the first week of March, the school board conducted an online survey to acquire input from parents, staff, students, and the community on the most desirable qualifications for the new superintendent.

At a school board meeting on March 7, there was a public hearing to receive additional input. The board concluded the meeting by approving a job description. The job opening was posted the next day, and the application process ended on April 8.

For privacy reasons, I cannot reveal the names of the applicants, but I can say we have 22 applications, and four of these are experienced superintendents. Attracting an experienced superintendent to Orange County would be in the best interest of our students, employees, and the public. The next step will be the interview process, and I anticipate the school board will announce their selection by the end of May. The new superintendent will begin work on July 1.

Orange County

Orange County has a very active TRIAD program, sponsored by the Sheriff’s Office and serving the senior citizens of the county. TRIAD was created in a partnership between national law enforcement organizations and the American Association of Retired Persons. It is an integral part of community policing, with a focus on reducing unwarranted fear of crime and on improving the quality of life for seniors. There is a deputy from the Sheriff’s Office who serves as TRIAD Coordinator; he works with senior service providers and a cadre of volunteers.

Although the coordinator works for the Sheriff, the materials used to support the various TRIAD programs are funded primarily by donations.

TRIAD has a number of different programs to support seniors. One is the File-of-Life, which is a document that an individual can fill out to provide essential medical information that would be needed by emergency medical providers when that individual may be unable to provide that information. The File-of-Life has a magnetic folder that can be placed on the refrigerator, where EMTs would look for it. Another program is the Guardian Alert Pendant that enables a person to contact 911 via a pendant they wear around their neck, especially useful when the person is unable to reach a phone. There is no monthly charge, and the pendants are provided free for a donation. Currently, there are about 300 of these pendants distributed throughout the county.

For seniors experiencing dementia, or for some autistic individuals, Project Lifesaver consists of a small wristband radio transmitter that can be tracked to find someone who has wandered away from care. Both law enforcement and EMTs are certified to use the antennas that track these wristband transmitters.

There are 16 of these wristbands in the county, and volunteers conduct monthly visits to change batteries and verify satisfactory operation.

The TRIAD Coordinator will provide Home Security Surveys on request. He also offers presentations to local groups on current scams, and has assisted in investigations of scams that have been perpetrated on county residents. In some cases, he has assisted in recovering lost funds, but usually recovery is not possible. If you think that someone is being victimized, let the Coordinator know and, where possible, he can check it out. TRIAD also has a wealth of additional information on the Orange County website on the Sheriff’s page.

TRIAD is sponsoring a Thrive Beyond 55 Conference in Lake of the Woods to better inform citizens about what is available to assist seniors. Service providers and other organizations will be present, and presentations will be made to bring people up to date on scams and other issues of importance. The conference will be held at the Lake of the Woods Church from 9 AM to 3 PM on May 10.

Among the many clubs and organizations in Lake of the Woods, one of the clubs that stand out for their service to the community and those in need is the Kathy Merritt LOW Lioness Club. Their LOW Lioness Club President motto of “We Serve" truly tells the story of what it means to be a Lioness.

On its website, the Lioness Club states that “It is a group of civic-minded people who have banded together to do the things they cannot do alone.” There are few callings in life greater than that.
