FAMILY As you may know, only Sweetbriar Pool will be open this season, beginning Memorial Day weekend. Since it will undoubtedly be very busy, let’s get ahead of the curve and start planning for a smooth swim season and the influx of guests to our pool.

As instituted last season, Photo ID Cards are required for LOWA members to gain admittance to the pool. Here’s everything you need to know about obtaining a card for you and your family as well as purchasing passes for your guests before enjoying the pool:  All members, registered tenants and those residing in their households (ages 5+) who plan to use the pool must obtain a Photo ID.  Photo ID cards must be presented upon entrance for every member of the family (ages 5+).  The Photo ID cards display the date of birth of children ages 5-15. Children four and under are not required to have a card.  No Photo ID cards are issued for guests, grandchildren who visit occasionally, cousins, etc.  Children under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult or other responsible person over 15 years of age.  Unattended children 12 and older entering LOWA pool facilities without adult supervision must pass a current swim test administered by LOWA pool staff.  Daily guest fee is $3. Short term guest passes can be purchased as follows: 10 visits  $25 20 visits  $40 30 visits  $45 Photo ID Cards (free) and short-term guest passes can be obtained at the member services counter of the Holcomb Building. Please bring proper identification and your completed Photo ID application. You can pick up the application at the Holcomb Building or download the form at www.lowa.org/pools, scroll to Related Links and select Photo ID Requirements. Save time; Download the form. The Holcomb Building is open 8:30 AM to 5 PM (Mon-Fri) and 9 AM to 1 PM (Sat).

President’s Letter

Agenda (Tentative) Regular Board of Directors Meeting May 5, 2018, Community Center

A Members’ Meeting is scheduled for April 24 at 7 PM at the Community Center. At that meeting Jennifer Zukowski, Board Secretary, will report the total number of ballots received with votes cast to approve or disapprove the proposed referendum. The referendum would require 2,129 member votes to approve any expenditure or $500,000 or more.

The Board of Directors recommends that members vote “Disapprove” for the following reasons:  The proposed amendment would damage our community by delaying needed repairs and replacements. It can take a significant amount of time to reach 2,129 member yes votes to approve projects.  There is no exemption for any source of funds under this referendum, so repairs or replacements of $500,000 for which we have insurance or reserve money would require a member vote before the repair or replacement could be made. If the clubhouse or the dam were damaged by a hurricane, for example, we couldn’t start the repairs until we had a member vote even though we have insurance coverage.  As time goes by, inflation would make more and more projects subject to this restriction.  Delaying necessary repairs and replacements over time will make LOW less attractive to prospective buyers.

The Board has an obligation to maintain LOW common areas. It also has an obligation to tell our members when a proposed action has the potential to damage the community. The Board voted unanimously to oppose this referendum and recommends that you oppose it too.

Sylvia Zelinsky, our Community Operations Manager, is moving to upstate New York and we will sorely miss her. Sylvia runs our Community Operations and is in charge of everything fun around LOWA. In 1996, Sylvia began her career as a Clubhouse server, then bartender, and then Night Supervisor. In 2004, she was the Assessment Clerk and Receptionist when the Front Desk was on the second floor of Holcomb Building. In 2008, she became the manager of Community Operations. Over the years, Sylvia has managed several popular community y k s activities such as the Independence Day celebrations e li n S ylvia Z (parade, Clubhouse Point activities and fireworks), Treats on the Point at Halloween and the Christkindlemart at Christmas to name a few.

She helped usher in the Pickleball Era at the Community Center where now dozens of games are played every day. She helped run the Fitness Center and Swimming Pools. You may not have known Sylvia was a certified Red Cross First Aid and CPR Trainer who trained dozens of LOWA employees over the years. I will miss Sylvia’s positivity, dedication, and emphasis on customer care. Join me in saying Happy Trails, Sylvia!

1. The new Sweetbriar Pool opened in 2017, and is our only community pool in 2018. Clubhouse Pool is closed this summer in anticipation of construction of the new zero-entry pool with six swim lanes to open Summer 2019. Sweetbriar Pool has excellent features:  Six swim lanes with zero-entry ramp  3/4 Meter Diving Board and Slide  Wading Pool with spray features 2. Pool use for Members and Registered Tenants and their families is free.

It is already paid for through the annual assessment.

3. Members and Registered Tenants and their families need to obtain LOWA photo IDs. Come to Member Services in the Holcomb Building.

We began using LOWA photo IDs last year and we believe it helped with compliance with the access rules.

4. Guests of Members and Tenants need Guest Passes. Obtain guest passes at the pool gate. You can buy punch passes of 10, 20 and 30 at a discount at Member Services.

5. All pool patrons need to familiarize themselves with the pool rules included in Regulation XII. Rules are posted at the pool as well.

B. Committee Liaison Reports Director Hoh reported that the Golf Committee has reviewed and agrees with the 14th fairway pond forebay design which is nearly complete. The Golf and Finance Committees will be embarking on an initiative to update and record metrics to track golf hours and revenue. He also reported that the Finance Committee is working with the Planning Committee to develop instructional briefings on financial basics for LOWA committees and members.

Director Sheridan reported that Safety & Security found the License Plate Reader project was going to cost far more than originally projected. They will be looking at alternative vendors.

Director Zukowski said that the March Madness event hosted by the Community & Youth Activities Committee was very successful.

Director Clawson reported that both the Clubhouse deck and dock replacement projects are proceeding well.

Director Wilks reported that the ECC is discussing restricting the size of accessory buildings on private lots, but no recommendations are being made at this time.

3.2 Report from the General Manager (Asst. GM Chester Guzek reporting) A. February Financials In February we collected $149,790 in current year lot assessments.

Year-to-date we have collected $5,644,190, or 98% of the FY2017-18 assessments billed. The current delinquency rate is 2.2%, compared to 3.1% at this time last year. As of February 28th, the Preliminary Unaudited Budget Summary is showing an unfavorable variance of $54,404, primarily due to lower than anticipated revenue from tenant fees, lower Clubhouse revenues, and Fareways expenses.

B. Lakes Management Report The Roadside Ditch Reconstruction Program is ahead of schedule, with 49% of the 23 miles of ditch reconstruction completed. A semi-annual report on the Lakes Management Implementation Plan is scheduled for next month.

C. CARC Project Update Assistant General Manager Chester Guzek summarized the current financials and project status. Current funding consists of $458,422 in cash on hand, projected income of $818,000 (year 1 lot assessment of $191/lot), and a $5M bank loan (application submitted and pending approval). Design is 100% complete. Competitive bids for construction are due April 17 for a contract award by May 5 or 16, 2018. The General Manager has planned a CARC Open House information session for members on April 30 at the Clubhouse.

D. Other Business Due to adverse weather conditions, the completion of the Clubhouse deck and dock replacement projects is now forecast for April 20th. Work on the front entrance walking trail has also been delayed until early May due to the weather. Portions of the trail around the front entrance pond will be temporarily closed as work proceeds.

The Buildings, Grounds and Roads staff had considerable clean-up to do following the windstorm of March 2-3. There was only minor damage to three of our common buildings, but grounds and roads crews had the bulk of the work to do clearing trees from roads. All the windscreens at Hollyfield Park will need replacement.

Management is now using the Clubhouse Online module on our LOWA website in place of the Constant Contact e-mail marketing tool we had been using. This integrates with our member management system enabling us to reach 4666 subscribers as opposed to the 2555 members using the Constant Contact method.

Did you know that the LOWA website has an online directory that is visible only to LOW members? The website has a database of LOW members, but only member names are made visible in the directory unless each member chooses otherwise. To make your address and/or phone number and/or email address visible in the online directory, login to the website (LOWA.org). Then, in the upper right-hand corner, click on your name to get a drop-down menu. Select “Edit My Profile.” Then in each category (address, phone, email), select Show or Hide (if the info is currently hidden, you’ll see a Show button. If the info is currently visible, you’ll see a Hide button.) Making the info visible will make it easier for LOW neighbors and friends to invite you to dinner, parties, golf, etc.

Lake of the Woods hosted our Annual Opening Day Ladies’ Scramble.

We had two teams tie for first place: the threesome of Anne Smith, Karen Woods, Phyllis Sakole; and the foursome of Nancy King, Lori Barnes, Lisa Halpin, Gladys Southern tied with a 70 from the green tees. The ladies helped us to get off to a great start for our season.

We have also been getting ready for the season by aerifying some of the greens. Aerification is done twice a year. During the spring, an outside company will “drill and fill” the greens with specialized equipment. The equipment drills down 12 inches and fills the hole with sand. By doing this, the bent grass root can grow deep, and our greens look great!

Aeration was completed on April 6 and takes about 10 to 14 days to fully see results. Come on out and play on our freshly groomed greens! With the anticipated opening of the new Dog Park fast approaching, the Happy Tails Dog Club is now officially accepting registrations.

Yearly registration fees are as follows: One dog: $50 Two or more dogs: $75 Friend of Happy Tails Dog Club: $25 – This membership is for those who don’t currently have a dog, but would like to be a part of the club.

The James Madison Museum of Orange County Heritage is our local venue for all things Orange, Virginia. The collections, exhibits, and programing offered are invaluable in preserving our heritage for our future as well as those who travel here to find out what makes Orange special.

The James Madison Museum is happy to announce an opportunity to participate in a fun and interesting event to benefit the operations of the museum and its programs. On Saturday, May 19th, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, join the museum in a day of discovery as an Appraisal Fair Fundraiser is offered as a chance to learn more about the antique, unique, and unusual. It will be held at the museum, at 129 Caroline Street, with parking in adjacent lots. In the spirit of the Antiques Roadshow, the fair will offer attendees the chance to have a verbal appraisal on a variety of objects by local experts while enjoying the beauty and heritage of the Town of Orange. Appraisals will be offered for a $20.00 donation for each item, or $50.00 for three items.

Local scouts will be on hand to assist in the transportation of items to the appropriate appraisal location. The museum, which preserves historic objects related to Orange, James Madison, Zachary Taylor, and more, will be open for tours as well. Food trucks will be set up in the adjacent lot for all to enjoy.

There will even be a Feedback Booth to offer attendees the opportunity to share their experience and what they learned about their object with the public.

Representatives from Comcast will be the featured speakers at the LOW Civic Club meeting Wednesday, April 25. The meeting will be held in the Great Hall of the Clubhouse beginning at 7 PM. Speakers will include a technical expert, to explain how the system works; an individual with expertise in Xfinity services; and a Comcast business representative. Comcast has been the primary provider of Internet services at Lake of the Woods since it took over from Adelphia in 2005.

The April meeting also will include the election of officers to serve on the Civic Club’s Board of Directors. The officers serve for a one-year term beginning on May 1.

The LOW Civic Club hosts monthly speakers and provides an open forum where property owners can learn about issues which affect their lives, interests and investment in the LOW community. The Civic Club has hosted speakers including Association officers and management, state and local government officials, Orange County school leaders, and other experts that touch on lives at Lake of the Woods. Each July, the Civic Club hosts an informal event to meet the candidates running for the LOWA Board of Directors. In August, it co-sponsors a reception with the LOWA Board to recognize the many volunteers that serve on LOW committees.

The motto of the Civic Club is “Be Concerned, Be Informed, Be Involved.”

Everyone is welcome to attend all Civic Club meetings. Voluntary annual family memberships are $5/year.

Next month marks the 154th anniversary of the Battle of the Wilderness.

Conducted around and sometimes on our community’s grounds during the first week of May 1864, the battle is often considered the beginning of the end of the Confederacy.

On May 5 and 6, the National Park Service, in conjunction with living history re-enactor organizations and FoWB, will offer, free of charge, a full range of events and demonstrations commemorating this battle.

This event will be held on the grounds of Ellwood Manor, a restored plantation home located on Route 20, half a mile from the Routes 20/3 intersection. Confederate and Union infantry and cavalry re-enactors as well as individuals depicting key battle commanders such as Generals Grant, Meade, and Warren will participate. Visitors can view demonstrations of the camp life of a soldier, and the medical realities of the Civil War. Activities will be held at Ellwood each day from 9 AM to 5 PM; some ongoing, and others at specific times, usually on the hour. Infantry and cavalry battle demonstrations between Confederate and Union re-enactors will highlight each day. At noon and 3 PM both days, the NPS will conduct live fire artillery demonstrations. At 4 PM Saturday, the infantry, cavalry, and artillery units will conduct a combined battle demonstration. There will be opportunities to talk to the participants and plenty of photo opportunities.

The Lake of the Woods Lioness Lions would like your help re-stocking the shelves in the Lions Lioness Wilderness Food Panty. With your generous donations we will be able to help those in need. The Lioness will be collecting food donations on Saturday, May 5 from 8 AM to 1 PM in the parking area directly across from the security gate.

Following is a list of possible donations that are needed in the food pantry: Dry goods, such as instant mashed potatoes, cake mixes, cereal, dry and canned beans (including pork n beans), pasta, oatmeal, individual sized bags of chips, Granola bars, coffee and tea bags; canned fruit, meats and cake frosting; boxed dinner and side items; peanut butter, jelly, soup (please, no tomato), spaghetti sauce, containers of applesauce, or bottles of vegetable oil.

In addition, monetary donations, either cash or checks made payable to the Lions Wilderness Food Pantry, are welcome.

Please stop by our food drive and make a donation. You will not have to even get out of your car. One of our lovely Lioness volunteers will come to your car and collect your donations and give you a small token of our appreciation.

With a little more cooperation from Mother Nature, we should be able to get on track for all of the LGA events coming up in late April and May. The 9-Holers invitational tournament, Around the World in 9 Holes, will take place next Friday, April 27. Registration and breakfast start at 8:15 AM. Shotgun start is at 9:15. The awards luncheon at the clubhouse will follow play. The deadline for signup was April 13. If you missed the deadline, but want to play, contact Dorothea Barnes or Ellen Bearden. They might be able to fit you in.

The Spring Tournament will now be May 1, 15 and 22, because we have a large group of LGA ladies out of town the week of May 8. Please make a note of this change in your booklet.

The Ringers tournament will run from May 1 to Sept. 30. This will allow us to play from the green tees in April and October so Rea can complete the handicapping process for the green tees. Any time you play from the green tees, please remember to hand your score card in to Rea after posting it in the computer. Your score must be verified by another LGA or MGA member.

The lunch pre-order option was well received at the opening scramble.

We have decided to offer this option to the ladies on our regular Tuesday outings. Every Tuesday, lunch order forms will be available at check in. If you opt to pre-order, note if you are playing 9 or 18 holes and what hole you are teeing off from. Items available will be select cold sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups, and beverages. This will help the Fareways staff accommodate our large group more efficiently. Members will always have the option to order when they finish golfing, but those who pre-order cold sandwiches and salads should receive their lunch more quickly upon entering Fareways.

April 4 Minutes from p. 4 Construction tasks for the Happy Tails Dog Park are in progress, with fencing to be installed and a gravel parking lot created by our Roads Department. Completion of the project is expected by May 30th.

3.3 Committee Reports Communications Committee Report Chair Anne Felder provided the Board with recommendations from the Committee on implementing communication strategies to better inform members on the CARC Project. Strategic plans include focusing on the facts and updating information via the newsletter, the LOWA website, Channel 18 and social media. An informational CARC Open House is scheduled for April to give members an opportunity to interact with Board members, management and other key individuals on the project.

Planning Committee Report Chair Allie Felder reported on committee changes, accomplishments over the past few months and plans they will be working on in the near future.

They will be meeting with the Communications Committee to develop a LOWA survey, and with the Finance Committee to delineate their respective responsibilities. Preparing for the upcoming capital project cycle and updating the 5- and 10-year plans are central to their goals 4. Member Comments on Business Agenda Members provided comments on the proposed change to the night speed limit on the lake, and materials to be used for the Clubhouse deck replacement.

Stage Alive Awards Scholarship

The officers and directors of Stage Alive! Community Concert Association are pleased to announce that the winner of their academic Music Scholarship for 2018 is Colette Ciskanik, a senior at Orange County High School. The scholarship is worth $1,000. It is awarded each year to a graduating high school senior living in one of the counties of Culpeper, Fauquier, Louisa, Madison, Orange, Rappahannock and Spotsylvania, who has been accepted by a university, college or conservatory and will continue his or her musical studies with a view to pursuing a musical career. Coletteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s resume and achievements demonstrate that she is extremely well-qualified for this scholarship.

Colette lives in Lake of the Woods and has been a very active musician for the last several years. Her musical talents are not limited to performing brilliantly on the piano but also include composition â&#x20AC;&#x201C; she composed the music for the Orange County High School song, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Orange and Blue,â&#x20AC;? including a piano accompaniment arrangement. She will graduate fourth in a class of 353, with a 4.181 weighted GPA, and will enter James Madison University in the fall of this year, where she will work toward a degree in music composition. Her desire is to embark on a career as a composer, particularly in the field of films.

Stage Alive! is delighted to have this opportunity in a small way to help this highly talented young lady achieve her dreams.

The LOW VETS Club will present two speakers at their Thursday, April 26 meeting, at 7 PM in the lower level of the Clubhouse.

The speakers are both Lake of the Woods residents: Nicole Pappas is president of Blue Star Mothers of Fredericksburg Chapter VA4; Julie Phend is author of the book D-Day and Beyond: A True Story of Escape and POW Survival.

Blue Star Mothers is a non-profit patriotic organization supporting our active duty and veteran service members and the families of our fallen heroes. They are best known for their 75 year tradition of sending Care Packages to deployed service members. Last year the Fredericksburg Chapter sent over 1200 packages containing food, coffee and tea, toiletries, letters, books and other comfort items. Pappas is a resident of Lake of the Woods and is involved in many local organizations and activities in support of our service persons.

Phend was an eighth-grade teacher in Naperville, Illinois for most of her career. She met WWII veteran Stanley Edwards when he spoke to her students about his war experiences. They subsequently collaborated on the book. Julie and her husband, Jack, moved to Lake of the Woods in 2010.

She is now finishing a historical novel with the working title of Sculptor and Spy. The story takes place during the American Revolution.

Women veterans are encouraged to join us at the meeting. LOW VETS membership is not required, and there will be no pressure to join. The club simply wants women veterans to have the opportunity to meet each other, share mutual experiences, and receive the thanks of the LOW VETS club.

On Saturday morning, May 5, The LOW Church Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Guild will host a Silent Auction to benefit Living Waters Community Clinic and MWU Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. Come to Lake of the Woods Church for a fun and inspirational morning and an opportunity to bid on a variety of personal treasures.

Items to be auctioned include fine china, quilts, decorative items and original paintings, as well as jewelry, shawls, purses and tote bags. There are book collections, heritage dolls and toys for children, as well as tools, sports equipment and car accessories for the men.

Bidding will begin at 9:30 AM and conclude at 11 AM, followed by speakers from Living Waters Clinic and MWU Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. Continental breakfast will be available all morning. At 11:30, winning bids will be announced and can be picked up and taken home.

Funds raised will enable Living Waters Free Clinic to purchase an autoclave machine to sterilize medical equipment. With the increase in numbers of patients, it has become cost prohibitive to use disposable instruments. The Autoclave will allow health care professionals at the clinic to continue to provide safe, quality care to patients. Also benefitting will be the Mary Washington University Intervarsity Christian Fellowship for their work supporting college studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; spiritual lives.

As I write this, the best seats available were tonight and the two matinees. I know everyone likes to see the musicals, but this show will tickle your funny bone. If there can be a screw up with the script, the actors or the sound effects just days before their show, it can happen and likely will. You really should give this comedy a try.

How often have you thought about your great, great, great grandchildren?

I bet they probably have not been thought of until now, unless you have future generations of children in your family, but what about their children.

What will their names be? Who will be their parents?

Generational planning is often forgotten because we are usually consumed with the present and past and rarely does the future generation of relatives cross our mind. Genealogy allows us to go back into the past and dig in for hours to learn about our heritage and it gains in popularity as people age. Interest becomes more intentional when there is a change in the family and memories are being shared, such as old photographs, childhood stories and memories of the good old days.

Our guest speaker on May 15 will share multiple ways you can start planning for future generations without having a large sum of cash.

On May 10, during our evening Knowledge Club, we will be sharing tips on how to shop for healthy foods and stay within your personal budget so you can begin to save for your future.

The Knowledge Club meets at the Community Center on the third Tuesday of the month between 10 and 11 AM and our evening Knowledge Club will meet in May, July, September, and November from 6 to 7:30 PM. Our evening educational event will be Thursday, May 10 and our morning event will be Tuesday, May 15 at the Community Center. RSVP preferred, and we will have light refreshments. He enlists the aid of confidence artist extraordinaire Paul Newman to gather together an impressive array of con men eager to settle the score with Shaw. One of the biggest hits of the early ‘70s, The Sting picked up seven Oscars including Best Picture, Director, Screenplay and Best Adapted Score for Marvin Hamlisch’s unforgettable setting of Scott Joplin’s ragtime music. Friday, May 11 (7:30 PM) Sahara (Columbia, 1943) The Packard Campus Theater is presenting three films to commemorate the 75th anniversary of significant events of WWII between May 11 and 17. The action in Sahara takes place in Libya during the Western Desert Campaign and was released just six months after the surrender of Axis forces in North Africa. Setting out to rejoin the American command after the fall of Tobruk, American tank commander Sgt. Joe Gunn (Humphrey Bogart) and his U.S. crew pick up five British soldiers, a Frenchman, and a Sudanese man with an Italian prisoner as they cross the Libyan Desert. The group becomes a microcosm of the Allied forces as they work together to defeat a much larger German unit. Directed by Zoltan Korda, this tense and exciting drama received widespread critical acclaim and three Oscar nominations including Best Supporting Actor for J. Carrol Naish as the Italian prisoner. 97 min.

Saturday, May 12 (7:30 PM) The Pianist (Focus Features, 2002 – R-Rated*) Adrien Brody won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his sensitive portrayal of famed Polish pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman as he struggles to survive the onslaught of Nazi tyranny during World War II in this drama based on his memoirs.

A composer and pianist, Szpilman was playing live on the radio in Warsaw when the station was bombed during Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland. Szpilman and his family were soon forced from their home into the overcrowded Warsaw Ghetto.

He later aided the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of April 19 to May 16, 1943, the largest single revolt by Jews during World War II. Szpilman eventually reclaimed his artistic gifts, and confronted his fears--with aid from an unlikely source. The film also won Oscars for Best Director (Roman Polanski) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Ronald Harwood) and was nominated for Best Picture of the year. 150 min. *No one under the age of 17 will be admitted without a parent or guardian.

Thursday, May 17 (7:30 PM) The Dam Busters (Warner Bros., 1955) This British epic war film depicts the true story of the May 16, 1943, Operation Chastise. The RAF’s 617 Squadron attacked the Ruhr dams in Nazi Germany with British engineer Barnes Wallis’s bouncing bomb, an explosive designed to drop into reservoirs and cause massive flooding to Germany’s industrial hub. The Dam Busters takes a documentary-like approach, focusing first on the development and testing of the special bomb and, in the second section, the carefully orchestrated preparations for the mission and its execution. The film was a financial and critical success, receiving special praise for its accuracy, direction, cinematography and special effects. Directed

Receiving his degree in piano performance and best known for his arrangements, Emile’s favorite music to arrange comes from Broadway musicals. In many of his arrangements, one can hear the influence of his favorite composers, Rachmaninoff, Debussy and Chopin, accounting for the sensitivity and passion with which he plays. Recording since 1991, the pianist‘s CDs of familiar music have sold well over three million copies nationally. Sunday, May 20 (7:30 PM) M2duO (Live) Made up of violinist Machiko Ozawa and pianist Makia Matsumura, the M2duO are often billed as a “Japanese tango duo.” Ozawa and Matsumura both graduated from The Tokyo University of Arts, and studied at The Juilliard School. They started performing together at the Café Mozart in New York City’s Upper West Side where they started to play Astor Piazzolla’s tango scores. They went on to arrange and play oldies from their home country, reinvented as tango pieces. Aside from their growing love for tango, they have each pursued their own unique paths: for Ozawa, it was “tap violin” (tap-dancing while performing the violin) and new sounds with the electric violin; for Matsumura, it was silent film accompaniment. In this special evening, the M2duO will present their all-time favorites – Piazzolla, Japanese-oldies-turned-tango-- as well as their originals with Ozawa on her electric violin. When the contemptible Earl of Hertford (Claude Rains) discovers the switch, he attempts to use it as a ploy to seize the throne. Thursday, May 31 (7:30 PM) Jazz Legends on The Ed Sullivan Show (CBS TV, 1955-1970) This program of renowned jazz musicians on Ed Sullivan’s popular television variety series will include performances by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Peggy Lee, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Rahsaan Roland Kirk with Charles Mingus, Errol Garner, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone and rare footage of the Dave Brubeck Quartet recorded at his home in the Berkeley Hills of California.

Many of these performances have not been seen since their original airdates. The Ed Sullivan Show (CBS, 1948-1971) was a landmark television program, and unquestionably one of the most important chronicles of mid-20th century popular culture. The Motion Picture, Broadcast and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress acquired master material from the current owner, Sofa Entertainment, and simultaneously arranged to purchase new Beta SP preservation video copies.

by Lee Frame, District 5 Supervisor Orange County has a comprehensive program to attract business into the county. The county recently published a pocket card with 18 fast facts about the county that would be of interest to potential businesses. Since the availability of a labor force is a major factor in business location decisions, the pocket card provides some facts about the people of Orange County. These include: a population of about 35,000, median age of the population is 44, median household income of $66,990, on-time high school graduation of 94.4 percent, 67 percent of workers have post secondary education, and more than half of the residents commute out of the county with a 39 minute one-way commute time.

Other facts that affect business relate to the county’s location. Orange County can boast of: two community colleges and four universities within 30 minutes drive, commercial air service within 33 miles, a major four-lane highway within 10 miles, 7 other major highways within 45 miles and 40 percent of the United States population lives within 500 miles of the county.

Important facts about the county itself include: over 800 businesses located in the county, several nationally-recognized manufacturing leaders, a countyowned industrial park with 50 available acres, available buildings throughout the county and a rail service in the county. The pocket card also includes the tax rates for real estate, machinery and tools and business personal property.

These pocket cards are available throughout the county for people who have connections to potential businesses that might want to consider our county.

The Director of Planning and Zoning recently completed his report on the activities of 2017. The county issued 414 zoning permits during 2017. 172 of these were for homes. Another 126 erosion control permits were also issued.

This permitting activity represents a 30 percent increase over 2016 and is the highest that it has been since 2007. This significant increase in building activity is very evident as you observe the many new houses being built in LOW. Subdivision and plat review involves subdivision of existing parcels into new parcels or changes in parcel boundary lines. The subdivision of parcels can create new building lots and in 2017 100 new lots were created, mostly from 90 new lots in Phase II of Germanna Heights.

A number of site plans were submitted, several of which are located in the LOW/Route 3 area. Site plans for the Sweetbriar Pool and a Dunkin Donuts next to LOW Hardware were approved. However, there has been no subsequent activity or submittals on the Dunkin Donuts project. Other site plan submittals still under review include LOW Storage, sections 5 and 6 of the Wilderness Shore Subdivision and the Lake of the Woods Clubhouse Pool and Fitness Facility. Site plan approval may involve a number of other agencies including Virginia Department of Transportation for road issues, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality for storm water management, Rapidan Service Authority for water and sewer and Culpeper Soil and Water for erosion control. Depending on the complexity of a project, some plans can be approved rather quickly, but others may take additional time to get the review and approvals of all of these other agencies.

The Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District has received two grants through the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund (also known as the License Plate Fund). One grant will update the District’s popular Driveway and Small Lot Best Management Practices Guide, to include color pictures in an easy to use pocket guide. The other grant is to expand our lawn soil testing program, which was piloted in Madison County last summer. A soil test will tell you the nutrients that exist in your lawn and what is lacking.

The test costs just $10 plus shipping, but CSWCD and Virginia Cooperative Extension are offering it to landowners for free! Proposed dates are as follows: • July 30-August 3: An introductory meeting in your county about well and septic system maintenance, Bay friendly lawn care and ways to address problem areas in your yard. There will be a demo of how to take a soil sample.

• August 10: Samples are due to your Extension office • August 27: Follow up meeting with analysis and next step recommendation

How often are you caught in a conundrum, because you do not know the answer to the question and you cannot think of an answer fast enough? Do you find yourself having conversations with thoughts of what you should have said? Or maybe you are spending a lot of time talking to yourself instead of to others?

Often, we have the “should I have said this, or I should have said that” conversations when no one is listening or when we are sharing the story with someone else.

A toddler favorite word: Why? Because we spend more time talking, rather than listening, in order to have the last sentence or thought.

Toastmasters can help you to become an active listener and a better speaker to engage in a conversation that carries rather than spurting words randomly.

Table Topics dedicates a portion of our agenda to learning how to think before you speak and how to answer the question even when you may not know the answer. Impromptu speaking helps you to organize and express your thoughts by using fun and entertaining questions to allow for creative thinking and storytelling in two minutes or less. Plus there is a personal gain when you realize you can have the confidence to think fast and answer confidently and have fun. Give it a chance and come out and join us.

We are excited that it’s that time of year again when the Lake Youth Foundation can award scholarships to our high school graduates of Lake of the Woods. We have been awarding these scholarships since 2007. It continues to be a special time for our organization.

To receive one of these scholarships, the youth must have volunteered their time and talents to better their community. Seniors can be from a public school: Culpeper, Fredericksburg, Orange, or Spotsylvania High Schools; from a private school or be homeschooled. The applicant must be a resident of Lake of the Woods. Applicants should plan to attend a four year college, a community college, or a trade school. The person’s GPA must be 2.5 or higher. Scholarship applicants will be required to complete an in-person interview with the Lake Youth Foundation Scholarship Committee. The application deadline is Friday, April 27.
