Preventing the Spread of Aquatic Invasive Species
by Nick Blankenship, Environmental Resources Manager
Sweetbriar Pool Break out the swimsuits, sunscreen, and beach towels. Memorial Day weekend begins our pool season with both Clubhouse and Sweetbriar Pools opening Saturday, May 28. Clubhouse Pool hours are 11 AM to 7 PM daily through Aug. 9 and Sweetbriar Pool hours are 1 PM to 8 PM daily; closed Wednesday through Aug 9. August hours change when school starts; refer to the LOWA website for more information. The new shade structures have been completed at both pools; they look great and will help cool off both pool decks on those hot summer days. Make sure your LOWA membership cards are up to date for all your family members, as a current LOWA photo ID is required. Guest passes are available to purchase at the pools for $5 per guest. For multiple visits with guests, you should consider purchasing a short-term pass at Member Services at the Holcomb Building - 10 visits for $35, 20 visits for $50 or 30 visits for $55. Swim tests will again be administered by pool staff at Sweetbriar Pool for swimmers under age 12 who wish to use the slide, diving board, or to swim in deeper water; or for children 12 or older who wish to enter the pool areas without adult supervision. Special events will be held at both pools throughout the summer, including Water Fitness classes, Swim Team, and Friday Sports night. Pirates and Mermaids Theme Day will return by popular demand. Watch Lake Currents for all the upcoming events or the LOWA website under Amenities - Pool Events.

The signs follow the recommendations under the national campaign, Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers! It’s important for all vessels that travel from different bodies of water to follow the recommendations on the signs. Vessels that should follow the recommendations include all motorized and/or electric boats, canoes and kayaks, paddleboards, jet skis, or any other recreational vessels. The Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers campaign encourages all recreational users to prevent the transportation and spread of invasive species by following a few simple steps. The steps include: (Cited from https://stopaquatichitchhikers.org/ aboutus/#cleandraindry)
