Backyard Conservation

Sum

by Nick Blankenship, Environmental Resources Manager

Are you experiencing erosion, flooding, and/or drainage issues on your lot? A backyard conservation project might be able to alleviate those issues. Techniques such as rain gardens or rainwater harvesting could be the solution. Rain gardens are depressed landscape beds that can capture rainwater, runoff, and standing water in low-lying areas. Rain gardens can help improve an area’s natural ability to infiltrate water into soils that have been impacted by impervious surfaces. Impervious surfaces are hardened surfaces such as roofs on homes and sheds, driveways, roadways, and tightly compacted soils. These impervious surfaces prevent a soil’s ability to allow water movement into and through the soil profile. Rainwater harvesting can reduce excessive runoff from impervious surfaces as well. Rainwater harvesting is a simple technique that uses rain barrels and/or cisterns to capture and store rainfall for future use. Traditionally, this technique involves harvesting rain from the roof of your home and/or shed. The home and/or shed’s gutter system will channel the water into rain barrels and/or cisterns. Rainwater harvesting can be beneficial to your lawn and garden. Another benefit to harvesting rainwater is a reduction in utility bills. These systems are very cost effective. Rainwater harvesting can also prevent erosion around your home’s foundation. Guess what? You may be eligible for financial assistance if you are interested in either of these projects!
