LOWA’s Access Control and Visitor Management Project Advances by Phil Rodenberg, General Manager, CMCA®, AMS ®, PCAM®
Are you ready to ride the TEKWave? LOWA is switching over to our new unified access control/visitor management system, TekWave, this summer. Like any other change of this nature, there will be a learning curve, requiring everyone to become acquainted with a new system. The change will be a positive one as we move forward to a more efficient and robust application to manage our access control and visitor management needs. As a reminder, LOWA took on this project to replace three separate systems; DwellingLive, PremiSYS, and System Galaxy, with one unified access control system for several reasons. The change will enable us to (1) expand Front Gate check-in capabilities and efficiencies, (2) provide you with card access to all amenities, and (3) use license plate recognition (LPR) technology at both the Front and Back Gates. Entry Guard, our installation contractor, is working during June, July and August to put the new systems in place. Access Control. The entry gate access control system transition to TEKWave will be seamless. Members will soon see construction at the gates in the form of directional boring under the roadways to install cables for the new LPR cameras. LOWA will use LPR to enforce our regulations and coordinate with law enforcement. Meanwhile, at the new Fitness Center, Entry Guard is installing the new proximity card reader so that Fitness Center members can access the exercise equipment anytime the center is open. LOWA is transitioning to a photo ID card with both a proximity card chip and a barcode. Fitness Center members will be the first to get this new type of card. Visitor Management. LOWA is transitioning away from DwellingLive and to TEKControl in the mid-July to early August time frame. We are waiting until after the July 6 Independence Day celebration to launch the new system. TEKWave, the maker of the TEKControl software, is customizing a section of its website for us. Once the new site is tested and ready for use, and Administration and Security staff have been trained, TEKWave will send a welcome email to members, inviting them to load the names of their longterm guests into the TEKControl system before the “go live” date (which is still to be determined). On that date, we will be turning off the DwellingLive application and turning on the TekControl application. Please watch for future articles explaining exactly when LOWA will make the switch to TEK Control.

• Boaters, please make sure your watercraft is properly equipped with safety gear. • Swimmers, take all your family’s photo IDs to the Sweetbriar Pool. • Parents, consider signing your child up to learn to swim. Swimming is a lifelong skill that will serve them well living in our lake community. Contact Swim Club Management Group, our pool management contractor, at http://www.swimclubvirginia.com. I have an urgent message for LOWA Members who have purchased a Family Guest Pass for someone in their family who does not take the extra optional step of getting a barcode. Please make sure they display the family guest pass card or a Security-issued dash pass marked “FG19”. The sign at the Main Gate visitor lane states: “ALWAYS DISPLAY PASS”. We expect everyone - members and guests alike - to display a barcode or a pass while parked in the common areas. This is especially important at the Clubhouse parking lot and at the beaches. Security will be checking for barcodes and/ or passes. Vehicles without them are subject to receiving the ugly orange “VIOLATION” sticker or a $50 summons. Please display your bar code or pass to assure everyone that you belong here. I’m pleased to announce that Chris Brode has been selected as our new Golf Pro to replace longtime pro Rea Hargraves. Chris has 23 years of experience in the golf industry. He comes to us from Myrtle Beach where he was most recently an instructor/teacher at the Golf Academy of America. He holds a PGA Card, and is a Navy veteran. Chris is a likable guy, and I believe everyone “8 to 80” will enjoy getting to know him. Chris will arrive June 17 and begin leading our daily play, tournaments, and instruction. Stop by the Pro Shop and welcome Chris to LOW!
Event Support Volunteers Needed For July 6 Visitor Access Security Chief Scott Walker is seeking volunteers to provide support for scheduling guest arrival in advance of the July 6 event. Volunteers will be tasked with answering the phones in the Security Office and entering guests into dwellingLive. If you are interested volunteering, contact the LOW Security Office 540-972-2210

With the opening of the new Fitness Center just around the corner, the Fitness Committee and management have purchased a brand new piece of exercise equipment that will help make exercising your legs easier. The new equipment is the Hammer Strength Select Seated Leg Press. This piece of equipment will allow members to change weights by moving a pin from one weight plate to another, rather than having to physically move the free weights from one cylinder to another as with the present leg press. The weight plates are solid steel with a weight selector pin that magnetically locks in place. The roller mechanism on the seat adjustment provides smooth operation. The hand grips have aluminum collars, preventing them from slipping during use. The weight plates total 390 pounds. Another brand new piece of equipment will be a three piece Deadlift Platform for the separate weight room. This will provide much more protection for the floor when doing exercises with the barbell. In addition, new weights hts and floor mats have been purchased sed for the new Exercise Room. For an early look at the he Seated Leg Press facility, you can go to www.lowa. ww.lowa. org, click on Administration on on the left, then scroll down to Communicationss Department. Honors Awards Committee: “LOW: It’s a Great Place to Live” by Karen Kovarik, Publicity Chairman
How often have you heard someone describe Lake of the Wood as a great place to live because of the folks who live here? How many of your neighbors elect to live here as long as they can? Our army of volunteers enriches our lives in so many caring ways. The annual awards ceremony is our chance to thank them publicly. To do that, the Awards Committee needs your nominations, and needs them in hand by June 28. Nomination forms are available at the Holcomb Building reception area as well as online at LOWA.org. It is important that we have both the nominator’s email address and the nominee’s email address so we can contact them if necessary. Mail or deliver your completed forms to Joann Buttimer, Chair, Honors Awards Committee, 1302 Lakeview Parkway, Locust Grove VA 22508, no later than Friday, June 28. For additional information, please contact co-chairs, Joann Buttimer, 540-972-5398 or Claudia Low, 540-412-1304. Awards will be presented at the annual LOWA Member Meeting on Labor Day, September 2. Please make sure that deserving members of our community are not overlooked.

The Virginia Square and Round Dance Association held its annual convention and dance on May 16 through 18 at the Founders Inn & Spa in Virginia Beach. Members of the Lake of the Woods Square Dance Club attended and, as always, a great time was had by all. The weekend’s dancing included about 300 square dance enthusiasts and a broad collection of callers and cuers. Festivities began with the opening ceremony Thursday evening, followed by dancing that evening and throughout the entire weekend. The theme for the weekend was “Track Two” (an actual square dance call) so train and railroad images and small train models were prominent throughout the weekend. The dancing was divided into various rooms and ballrooms with categories based on dance level and dance type. There was something for everyone: beginners square dance and round dance lessons, advanced lessons, “challenge” lessons, line dancing, multi-level dances, vendors selling square dance clothing and shoes, gift basket raffles, and of course, lots of fun and comradery. Square dance “callers” and round dance “cuers” from all over the area were also in attendance, offering a wide variety of calling styles and music that ranged from country to pop to hard rock. Other events included a sewing panel and a fashion show. The LOW Square Dance Club holds regular dances on Friday nights at the Community Center. There are many benefits to Modern Western Square Dancing (as it is now called), both to your health and to your social life. Beginners square dance lessons will be starting up again this September. No special clothes or dancing abilities required! If you would like to be notified of upcoming free drop-in sessions, or the start of the new lesson cycle, email lowsquaredanceclub@gmail.com. Please join us - ALL are welcome singles, couples, and families.

by Pat Licata, President, LOW Civic Club
Please join the Civic Club on Wednesday, June 12, at 7 PM, as Joseph M. Kirchgessner, senior partner with Woehrle Dahlberg Jones Yao PLLC, will discuss estate planning and trust creations. You’ll learn what is important to think about, and what information you’ll need in order to create these very important documents. Time will be allotted for questions at the end of the presentaJo tion. The meeting will be held in the Clubhouse. se A Fredericksburg area native, Kirchgessner ph M. joined the firm the spring of 2015, after having worked Kir ch g at a boutique employment law firm in Washington, D.C. He e s s n er advocates for his clients in a variety of matters, including domestic relations, estate planning, business/employment, and criminal matters. After graduating from Courtland High School in 2005, Kirchgessner attended Christopher Newport University. He graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. Following a sixth summer of coaching a local swim team, he then worked for a small law firm in Fredericksburg that focused on workers’ compensation cases for about two years. Kirchgessner attended St. Louis University School of Law and graduated in the spring of 2014 with a concentration in Labor and Employment Studies. He is an experienced litigator and has participated in hundreds of trials throughout the Commonwealth, including successful jury trials for both criminal and estate planning matters. In his spare time, Kirchgessner is an avid swimmer, cyclist, and traveler. He currently serves as President of the Ron Rosner YMCA in Spotsylvania County and is active in the Fredericksburg Area Bar Association, and other charitable efforts in the Fredericksburg community.

Leadership Outing children interact with residents at Dogwood Village of Orange County for Mother’s Day. The Alice C. Tyler Village children presented “Mothers are Special” cards to all mothers there. One of the boys asked why we didn’t have anything to give to the men - a thoughtful question! The Leadership Outing program, led by Mary Lou McFarland and Gail and Greg Stoner, has developed from the Star Outings initiative, which was designed to reinforce good behavior. The enhanced program recognizes and fosters further positive social development while providing the element of enjoyment. We will install new officers at our June monthly meeting Wednesday June 19. Retiring Treasurer Jane Haltmaier is nominated for President and Joy Lewkowski for Treasurer. Retiring President, Deborah Kratzer, has generously volunteered to chair the Dinner Dance Committee. Please note this one-time change in our regularly scheduled monthly meeting. If you have not signed up yet for our June 19 luncheon meeting, please call me at 540 972 8552 or email fitchlm05@comcast.net. The cost is $18, including tax and tip, for chicken salad, mixed greens, very-berry mousse with cookie, iced tea and coffee/tea. You may mail your check, payable to Childhelp Lake of the Woods Auxiliary, to PO Box 382, Locust Grove, VA 22508. We are very fortunate to have an active auxiliary of over 60 active members. Lake Currents June 7, 2019
In 1999 the LOW Lions Club established the LOW Lions Foundation as a 501(c)3 organization to manage the many charitable and community services that had been created since the Club’s inception over 20 years earlier. Today the Lions operate the Wilderness Food Pantry in partnership with the Lioness, loan medical equipment, provide eyeglasses and hearing aids to the needy, and perform vision and hearing screening in schools and clinics. The Lions have also funded “legacy” projects such as the Lions Pavilion adjacent to the Community Center at Sweetbriar Park. In this 20th year of the Foundation, an ad hoc committee of Lions Lee Frame, Rich Ticomb and Dick Gullickson sought to identify additional community projects that would serve needy persons in Orange County. Recently the LOW Lions Board approved donations to the following programs: A playground for a new Safe House in Orange A dental X-ray machine for the Living Water Dental Clinic (matching grant) Materials for the Head Start Program in Orange County TRIAD safety pendants and bracelets Startup funds for a Germanna Community College Food Bank An Orange County Schools Emergency Fund for needy students To launch the new program, Lions Lee Frame, Jean Schumitz, Rick Rappoport and Rich Ticomb presented a Foundation check for $2,000 to Heidi Lohr, Head Start and Preschool Coordinator for Orange County Public Schools. Head Start programs prepare America’s most vulnerable young children to succeed in school and in life. To achieve this, Head Start programs deliver services to children and families in core areas of early learning, health, and family well-being while engaging parents as active partners. Your donations and support (please consider becoming a Lion) for these programs are appreciated. For more information, contact Dick Gullickson at 703-314-2919 or dickgull@aol.com.

A participating student and his family view the historical posters judged by CWSG members. As in previous years, members of Civil War Study Group at Lake of the Woods offered to judge over 200 fourth-grade history posters prepared by students at Locust Grove Elementary and Lightfoot Elementary Schools. On May 14, CWSG hosted a reception at the LOW Clubhouse, with cake, cookies and lemonade, for 34 blue ribbon winners and their families from Locust Grove and six blue ribbon winners from Lightfoot. Volunteers Helen Brewer, Judy Schrage and Jane Owiesny, all from Wilderness ‘Tiques, served refreshments before and after presentation of the awards.

At the May 24 Concert on the Point, the 50/50 raffle held by Friends of Lake of the Woods raised $930 for the Happy Tails Dog Park shade project. Pictured are drawing winner Ciera Brooks and her daughter flanked by (L) Sharon Forest, Happy Tails Dog Club member, and (R) Bren Anderson, president of FLOW. There’s a whole lot of tail waggin’ going on at the Happy Tails Dog Park. Thanks to collaboration between the dog park members and the Woodworkers Club and an endorsement by the LOWA Board of Directors, there will soon be improvements at the park for all dog park members to enjoy. Specifically, the woodworkers are building a pergola using materials supplied and paid for by the Happy Tails Dog Club and by tax-deductible contributions donated via Friends of Lake of the Woods. The pergola will be placed in the small section of the park to provide needed shade. Also, six wood garden-style benches will be purchased. Two will be placed under the newly-built pergola and four will be placed in the large and small sections of the park, where needed. Estimated cost of the project is $3000. Fundraising kicked off on May 19 with a Dog Park Photo Shoot organized by Happy Tails members and local photographer Dan Reams who donated his time and talents. At the Concert on the Point on May 24, the 50/50 raffle held by FL0W for the benefit of this project netted $930. Stay tuned for other fundraising efforts and dog park news.

LGA News
by Heather Kuzma, Publicity Chair, LGA It looks like summer has arrived a little early this year. The good news is that we have been able to play most Tuesdays without weather issues. The not so good news is the heat and humidity have increased. So be sure to stay hydrated and use your sunscreen. The LGA Match Play Tournament begins on June 10. Good luck to all who are participating this year. Our next major event is the Sadie Hawkins Tournament on Tuesday, July 9. This is a 2-person team, best-ball format where each LGA member can invite the male golfer of her choice (not her spouse) to be her partner. After golf, the gentlemen will be treated to lunch in the Fareways CafÊ and prizes will be awarded to the winning twosomes. Loretta Yurkus will, once again, chair this very popular, fun event. If you want to participate, but don’t have a partner, Loretta will have a list of lots of willing and able men to choose from. Look for the sign-up sheet and more details to be posted in the ladies’ lounge at the Woods Center. Remember, the start time for June, July, and August is 8 AM with sign in by 7:30.
The LOW Veterans Club encourages everyone to proudly display the American Flag on Friday, June 14. On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white, and that it contains “13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation. A Wisconsin teacher originated the concept of an annual flag day to be celebrated across the country every June 14 starting in 1885. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially designated June 14 as Flag Day. The flag’s colors each represent a different value. White signifies purity and innocence; while red signifies hardiness and valor; and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. The number of stars on the American Flag represents the number of states in the union. In the late 50’s, before Alaska and Hawaii were admitted as states, an Ohio student named Bob Heft produced his creation of what a 50-star flag would look like. On July 4, 1960, President Eisenhower selected Heft’s design. The president and the high school student stood together when the 50-star flag was raised for the first time. The Veterans Club encourages everyone to attend the June 15 Wounded Veterans event, hosted by LOW Adaptive Watersports Foundation. It is very important to register for the event at https://www.adaptivewatersports.org/ At the recent Memorial Day event hosted by the Veterans Club, the following names of LOW deceased veterans were read and honored; ARMY: Harold “Hal Bailey, John “Jerry Griffith Davis, Richard Eusanio, Bertram Heffernan, David “Dave LeMay, Ted Ludvigsen, Anna O’Bannon, Gerald “Jerry Schrage, and John Solebello. MARINE CORPS: Robert J. “Bob Clarke, Charles A. “Chuck Tamburo. NAVY: Bernard Merritt, David Montague, Curtis Pendergrass, and John “Jack Walker. AIR FORCE: Boyd Bowers and Wayne Mayfield. The next meeting of the LOW Veterans Club is scheduled for Thursday, June 27, at 7 PM, in the Community Center. Our guest speaker will be Bill Ashton. He is the current Military Veterans Agriculture Liaison for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Susannah Chandler Chapter, NSDAR by Marie Johnson, Chaplain & Historian
On Saturday, May 18, the Susannah Chandler Chapter, NSDAR, presented a community event for all at the Community Center. A one-hour WWI documentary, The Hello Girls, was shown, free of charge. Filmmaker Jim Theres told the story of America’s first female soldiers. In 1918, the U.S. Army Signal Corps sent 223 women to France as telephone operators to help win the Great War. Our chapter delighted in serving the community, with both the documentary and, afterwards, with great refreshments.

by Alayna Stiffler, Knowledge Club What makes a person want to make a powerful change in their life? Could it be looking at the clutter and dust, or not feeling well day after day, or could it be an incident that was emotionally life-changing and impacted their heart? Change can be hard, and it does not mean it will be swift and rewarding immediately, but it does start with a small step. Here are some tips that can help you take the first step.

Join Madeline Salustri and Nancy Vasi on Friday, June 14, at 2 PM as they share some of her life and poetry through the reading of selections from the play, written by William Luce. Based on the poet’s diaries, poems, and letters, the play portrays Dickinson’s life from 1830 to 1886. Set in her Amherst, Massachusetts, home, it is an up close and personal glimpse into the life of one of America’s greatest poets. This program is free and open to the public. Imagine having the courage our children and grandchildren have. End of school year programs are in abundance, and there are many opportunities children and teens of all ages take to be in the spotlight. Talent shows, plays, concerts, band performances, awards banquets, graduations, and the list goes on. Our hearts thump when we see them being in the spotlight and proudly boast about their accolades and accomplishments. Where do they find their courage, and why are they not afraid to accept being the center of attention? Often as adults, we balk at being the center of attention and find fear of standing in front of people to speak, but nearly all of us had our moments on stage in our early years. Let Toastmasters help you regain your child-like confidence again. Toastmasters meets on the first and third Tuesday at 6:30 PM at the Community Center. Visit us and learn more. Orange County Fire & EMS ambulances had operated out of the Orange County Volunteer Rescue Squad facilities in the Town of Orange for many years. A year or so ago, the ambulance had to move out of that facility and operate out of a county building located at the airport. This increased response times for emergency calls in the town. At the urging of county and town officials, the Volunteer Rescue Squad transferred ownership of the in-town facilities to Orange County. After the county made facility improvements to bring it up to code, the Fire & EMS department moved their ambulances back into the town. The event was celebrated with an ambulance wetting down ceremony and manually pushing the ambulance into the building. I have mentioned in past articles that the Rapidan Service Authority has been working on projects as part of a Capital Improvement Program. Here are some of the projects recently completed or underway. An 8 inch water main along 500 feet of Eastover Parkway was installed between Route 3 and Edgemont Lane. This replaces a 2.5 inch line, to provide better water flow to this area. About 2,000 feet of force main sewage lines near the lake in the vicinity of Birchside Circle and Edgehill Drive were moved away from the lake to reduce the chances of any failure resulting in lake pollution. Another 500 feet of force sewage main, which ran in a creek near 9.9, was also moved. Emergency generators for backup power will be installed at sewage pump stations at Lakeview Parkway near Hillside Drive and at Pheasant Ridge road near River Bend Road. This summer a 4 inch sewage vacuum main along the lake on Madison Circle between Lakeview Parkway and Sussex Lane will be replaced with a 6 inch line. This will involve a few days installation work at some of the lakeside homes on this street. The total cost of these projects is about $800,000. Some of these projects are essential to meet the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality requirement to reduce sewage overflows. Orange County is gathering voluntary information on internet upload and download speeds throughout the county. There is an interactive survey website that will enable you to determine your upload and download speeds and enter that information. All survey fields are voluntary. The survey will enable us to better determine the adequacy of broadband coverage for its citizens. This information can be used for research and grant funding opportunities. The survey may be found at orangecountyva.gov/ broadbandsurvey. Orange County is seeking someone to represent the county on the Board of Directors of the Skyline Community Action Partnership (Skyline CAP). Skyline CAP provides resources that promote self-sufficiency. The programs include Head Start; Project Discovery, which helps students stay in school; Healthy Families, which provides home visits to promote positive parenting skills; and several programs that provide access to affordable housing. The Board meets monthly to address policies affecting these programs. If you are interested in serving with this worthwhile effort, please contact me at the email address below. If you have questions about county government or want to let me know your feelings on specific issues, you can contact me at leeframe@ orangecountyva.gov.
