On Saturday, July 6, Lake of the Woods will be hosting our Annual Independence Day Celebration at Clubhouse Point. There will be carnival games, miniature horses, a car show and the LOW Family Patriotic Parade on the Point (see the ad page 8).

The Clubhouse will have barbeque, burgers, hotdogs, ribs, and drinks for sale at the Point. All food and activities will be CASH ONLY. Clubhouse Beach restrooms will be open.

As you read this, we will be holding the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Clubhouse Pool, Fitness Center, and Snack Bar. Users of the Pool, Fitness Center, Snack Bar, and clubhouse beach will also enjoy the additional handicapped parking. While construction was delayed due to spring rains, it is poetic justice that we opened on the first official day of summer.

The process of design and construction of the pool and fitness center project has taken over three years from the time an ad hoc committee was formed to come up with designs. As usually occurs, some Members expressed opposition to the project for a variety of reasons. However, the election results each year since 2016 and the continuous support of the Directors suggest that the Community supported the project and looked forward to its completion.

In order to achieve the best results with this construction project, we employed an architect and pool designer to design the layout, a Project Manager and Clerk of the Works firm to monitor and supervise it to completion. The General Manager and staff have worked tirelessly, addressing the myriad issues pertaining to construction, permitting, and site work. Board and staff members have met with construction company representatives bi-weekly to be apprised of the construction status. We provided updates at nearly every Board meeting and posted them on the LOWA website, in addition to having two live information sessions for Members. Thus far, we have stayed within the budget.

At the start of summer and the completion of these updated amenities, please take your family to enjoy the new pool. If you have not done so, join the fitness center and exercise while you look out over our beautiful lake.

This is a great community with great people in it.

Summer is a busy time for starting and completing capital projects. Here is a snapshot of the latest on some key projects.

Clubhouse Area Recreation Complex Project. We will open for business Saturday, June 22. It takes a relentless project champion to complete a construction project of this magnitude. I’m referring to after the Board approves the project. The champion has push and goad and drive to reach the successful conclusion. Our champion (and project manager) is Jessica Graves, who also serves as LOWA’s Director of Facilities. (Hard) hats off to Jessie for helping deliver the project on budget and within the one-year timeframe.

Please come and check out:  Zero entry pool with spray features, water basketball and volleyball, and six lap lanes.  Snack bar serving hot dogs, nachos, wraps, and more.  Fitness Center with existing exercise machines plus new treadmills, rowing machines, and spin bikes.  Beach bathrooms with outdoor showers.  The basketball court needs a few more days to allow the asphalt to cure before the court paint is applied.

14th Pond Retrofit Project. This project, to improve the health of Keaton’s Lake, is delayed because of the contractor needing more time to dig the new retention pond, but the project will be completed in early July. The golf course portion of the work should be complete by June 28, but the new grass near the green will need two weeks to take root. We plan to open the cart path (but not for golf play) on June 28, so that golfers no longer need to detour on the streets around the hole.

Lakeview Parkway Repaving (Phase 2).This project to repair/repave the 3,280 foot section between the RV/Boat Storage area and 736 Lakeview Parkway (near Liberty Boulevard) will be done in the week of July 8 timeframe.

Sweetbriar Park Walking Trail. The Lakeview Parkway contractor will also repair/repave the 0.46 mile walking trail around the Community Center in the week of July 8 timeframe.

Lower Level Clubhouse Floor Tile. The Lower Level is empty now that the exercise equipment has been moved to the new Fitness Center. We plan to use the Lower Level during the July 6 Independence Day celebration, then close it again for the floor tile project in the mid to late July timeframe I hope you will enjoy these new and renovated amenities as they come on line.

The Board of Directors, at its June 5 meeting, approved an amendment to LOWA Regulation XVIII regarding use of the Fitness Center. The amendment is effective immediately.

What was amended? The new rule establishes that LOWA members, registered tenants, and their households who have paid the annual or temporary usage fees may purchase a temporary pass for guests, but must accompany guests using the Fitness Center.

XVIII. USE OF THE FITNESS CENTER A. Admission to the Fitness Center 1. LOWA members, registered tenants, and their households who have (i) paid the annual or temporary usage fees and (ii) signed the Fitness Center Amenity Form Agreement and Waiver (“FC Agreement and Waiver�) are eligible to use the Fitness Center, and shall be referred to herein as “FC Members.�

2. A LOWA member who is also a FC Member may purchase temporary passes for guests to use the Fitness Center. A maximum of two guests is allowed per household. Such guest users must be accompanied by a FC Member. All such guests must follow all Fitness Center rules and regulations and sign the appropriate FC Agreement and Waiver.

3. Eligible persons age 14-17 listed on the FC Agreement and Waiver may use the Fitness Center when accompanied by an adult family member. EXCEPTION: An eligible person age 14- 17 who has passed the “Performance Fitness Equipment Test� may use the Fitness Center unaccompanied.

4. Children under the age of 14 are not allowed in the Fitness Center at any time.

5. Each FC Member accessing or using the Fitness Center must present a LOWA-issued ID card to the attendant or enter using the security code or other management-approved means of entry. Non-FC Members are prohibited from entry to the Fitness Center, unless the Non-FC Member is a guest duly authorized in accordance with these Rules and Regulations.

6. All Fitness Center users (herein referring to FC Members and authorized guests) must abide by the Regulations and Rules governing the Fitness Center. Violators of these Regulations and Rules may suffer penalties, including loss or suspension of their Fitness Center privileges, as determined by the General Manager or his/her designee.

7. FC Members and their authorized guests exercise at their own risk and should use a “spotter� when appropriate.

8. Proper gym attire is required at all times. Shirts must be worn at all times. Swimwear is not permitted. Clean rubber soled shoes that cover the entire foot must be worn at all times. Sandals, spiked soles, work boots and flip-flops are not permitted. Shoes and personal items must be kept in the provided storage units.

9. Excessive noise and use of profane language are not permitted. FC Members and their authorized guests must use personal listening devices when playing music, watching videos or using exercising apps.

10. All programs and services, including personal training, group exercise, and instructional programs, must have written authorization from the General Manager or designee.

B. Equipment 1. FC Users are prohibited from relocating exercise machines and equipment from their established locations.

2. Equipment must be used properly, without causing potential damage to, or excessive stress on the equipment. FC Users are liable for the damage they cause to LOWA property.

3. Equipment must be cleaned using the provided wipes after each use.

FC Users must clean up after themselves.

4. All weights must be re-racked and equipment put in their proper location after use.

5. The deadlift platform must be used at all times when performing deadlift exercises.

6. Use of cardiovascular equipment such as treadmills, ellipticals, and recumbent bikes must be limited to 30 minutes when others are waiting.

7. Food, tobacco, and alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the Fitness Center. Only closed plastic beverage containers are allowed.

Smoking, including the use of electronic smoking devices, (see IV.F.2.) is not permitted in the Fitness Center.

8. Fitness Center vandalism or structural damage must be reported immediately to the attendant, if on duty, or to Security by calling 540-972-2210.

9. LOWA is not responsible for personal property lost or stolen in the Fitness Center.

Board Amends Regulation X.B.4, Prohibiting Activity on Frozen Lakes The Board of Directors, at its June 5 meeting, amended LOWA Regulation X.B.4, Other water restrictions. The amendment is effective immediately.

What was amended? The new rule prohibits walking, skating and other activities on frozen lakes. Temperatures in our region and the lake fluctuate, and ice may be too thin for walking, ice fishing, or ice skating.

X. USE OF THE LAKES B. WATERCRAFT REGISTRATION AND RENTAL REQUIREMENTS. Sections 1-3 remain the same.

4. OTHER WATER RESTRICTIONS. a. Watercraft, swimming, ice skating and fishing are prohibited on the Entrance Pond unless a waiver is obtained from the General Manager. The General Manager may also waive the rules for shows, tournaments, exhibitions, LOW Ski Club practices, hours of operation, landing on beaches and ski take-off areas.

b. Under no circumstances shall trash, garbage, yard debris, litter of any kind, pollutants, or any other substance or objects be dumped into the lakes.

c. Sitting, standing, walking, running, skating or similar

activities on the surface of any portion of the lakes that is frozen over is strictly prohibited.

3.2 Report of the General Manager A. April Financials In April, we collected $76,999 in FY2018-19 lot assessments, for a total of $6,615,380 or 98.3% of lot assessments billed. As of April 30, the Preliminary Unaudited Budget Summary shows a favorable variance of $94,466. This is not a final accounting and there will be some adjustments to make prior to releasing the books for the annual audit.

B. Lakes Management Report Finish Line Environmental has given a new estimated date of completion for work on the golf course as June 28. Additional time was needed due to there being more layers of rock and bedrock to remove than was expected, along with relocation of utility lines.

C. Clubhouse Area Recreation Complex Project Update Building finishing chores and final installation of pool equipment, operational checks, paving of the parking lot and other final tasks are to be completed over the next week. The project is close to the punch-out list phase to prepare for County inspection. The grand opening is scheduled for June 22 and a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on June 21.

Hello and happy summer! I can’t wait to tell you all about everything going on at the Equestrian Center!

First, and most importantly, our Summer Pony Camp has completely sold out! We’re so excited to meet so many new friends and teach them all about ponies and riding. I’m hoping some of these campers bring all of us hardworking ponies a few carrots and apples.

If you missed a camp spot but still want to ride, afternoon appointments after camp are still available but they’re filling up fast! Make sure you call my moms, Bridget and Melissa, at 540-972-2238 to schedule an appointment.

With the start of camp, the barn will be closed all Sundays when special events are not being held. We ponies need to rest and play so we can be ready to get back to work bright and early each Monday morning. We will plan on resuming Sunday hours in August after camp has ended.

In other exciting news, Lake of the Woods Equestrian Center is looking for IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association) team members. If you know anyone in grades 6-12 who has riding experience and wants to join our team, tryouts will be from 11 AM to 1 PM on Saturday, June 29. Here’s what you need to do if you’re interested in trying out: - Call ahead to schedule your tryout time - Bring $40 in cash or check to cover your tryout fee - Come dressed to impress in your horse show attire, if you own any Team memberships will be $55 per accepted team member. For more details, please call my moms.

Fancy and I are looking forward to seeing lots of kids on the Fourth of July weekend! We will be at the Point to meet kids and sell pony ride tickets on Saturday, July 6, and $5 pony rides will be from 11AM to 1 PM on Sunday, July 7 at the Equestrian Center. Don’t want to wait in line on Sunday? Make sure you buy your ticket and sign your waiver Saturday so you can show up and hop on!

Stop Poo-llution

by Chief Scott Walker, AlliedUniversal Security The wrong step may remind you that we have pet owners who aren’t doing their part for the community.

Besides being unsightly and smelly, pet waste can be hazardous to the health of our children who play in the community, and other pets. One of the most common forms of disease transmission between dogs is through fecal matter.

We’ve all heard the excuse, “It’s natural” or “It’s fertilizer.” The Environmental Protection Agency has classified pet waste as a non-point source pollutant; placing it in the same category as herbicides and insecticides; oil, grease, toxic chemicals and acid drainage from LOWA Reg. IV. abandoned mines.

The Elections Committee has hit the pavement running for our upcoming election. The calendar of events is complete and is as follows:  June 17- Candidates completed their interviews for Channel 18. They will be available for viewing around June 28.  July 5 – Candidates Bios will be published in Lake Currents.  July 21- Candidates Forum, 4-7 PM at the Community Center. Guidelines for questions will be posted in Lake Currents prior to the event.

Last but not least the Committee, with the assistance of our GM and Board Liaison, has designed what we are calling a ONE PAGE MAILER. Once all the details have been finalized, more information will be provided. The goal is to save our community time and money.

We are also looking for more members to assist us. We meet the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Woods Center. Yes, I’ll bring donuts and will provide coffee!

Quarterly Treasurerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Report Glad You Asked â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Are We There Yet? This update is for the fourth quarter of our 2018-2019 fiscal year. This coincides with our unaudited end of year financial information that is contained in this issue on pages 6 and 7 for your review. We are still analyzing much of the financial data, which will not be finalized until our annual audit is complete this summer. One item that we can report is that our assessment delinquency rate is once more extremely good at only 1.7 percent. By community association standards, anything below 5 percent is considered good, and we continue to be significantly better than that.

We have awarded a three-year contract to a new auditing firm, Adams, Jenkins and Cheatham, after evaluating five responses to our Request for Proposal.

This is consistent with our normal schedule of engaging a new audit team every three years. I will provide additional information on our audit progress as it becomes available. Related to this, we are expecting our final FY 2017-2018 audit report by the end of this month. This delay is a result of the turmoil caused by the need to thoroughly address the financial and accounting implications of the previous theft by Mr. Mayberry.

So, are we there yet? Not quite. The finance team has made great progress under the leadership of our new Director of Finance, Charlie Maneval, and they anticipate completing all the residual tasks in the near future. Thanks to all of you for the understanding and support over this past year. We continue to move forward and are very encouraged for the upcoming year. Please contact me if you have any questions.

The tick season is upon us. Why is this of note? After mosquitoes, ticks are the leading culprit in the transmission of diseases to humans. The Association has recently been notified of a case of Lyme disease in LOW. Ticks that endanger humans choose deer hosts and are often found where deer are plentiful. Although the rate of infection is not as high in Virginia as it is in the Northeast, there is a risk here due to our large deer population.

In this area we are most likely to see American dog ticks and deer ticks.

There are three stages to their development: larva, nymph, and adult. The deer tick nymph is thought to be responsible for 90 percent of the cases of Lyme disease, but you most likely will never see it. The deer tick nymph is the size of the punctuation mark at the end of this sentence. Female ticks are larger than the male.

Ticks hide in tall grass at the edge of the woods waiting for a host to walk by; which could be a pet, a rabbit a deer, or a human. They cling to the host and can then spend as much as 24 hours seeking a choice spot to burrow into skin using their barbed mouth parts. Diseases are passed toward the end of the meal.

There are several ways to avoid tick bites. Do not walk through tall, grassy areas or sit on fallen logs. When you walk in wooded areas or are gardening, wear long-sleeved shirts tucked into long pants, and tuck the bottoms of the pants into your socks.. Following the label directions, spray insect repellant on your clothing and exposed skin areas. Check with your doctor or product labels to determine whether the sprays can be used on young children. Check your clothing, your body, and your pets regularly for ticks.

The traditional methods for removing ticks (such as covering the tick body with paint, petroleum jelly, nail polish, or gasoline and/or burning them with a cigarette or match) are no longer advised. These methods may cause the tick to excrete disease germs into the body and cause further damage.

Current recommendations are to wear protective gloves and use tweezers to pull the tick out. Their mouth parts are curved, so pull it straight out and slowly until the tick releases it grip, which may take several minutes. If you still see black lines on the skin, the head remains in the skin and a doctor may be needed to remove it. Wash the area with soap and water, and apply antiseptic or rubbing alcohol.

Place the tick body in a jar of alcohol or tape it to a piece of paper for future reference. Do not crush the tick body. Carefully wash your hands after handling a tick. Check with your doctor if a rash appears on the thigh, buttocks or trunk of an adult or on the head or neck of a child. Most tick bites are not likely to cause harm, but early removal of the tick will prevent diseases being transmitted. Be aware of the dangers and use caution.

The front entrance pond was the site for the 22nd Annual Children’s Fishing Tournament held on Saturday, June 15. The Lake Youth Foundation would like to thank everyone who participated in this event. More than 300 fish were caught and released! Each child was treated to two hours of fishing, a free lunch and fishing gear.

Ahoy All LOW Lakers!

The previous Lighted Boat Parade Captains are welcoming any and all boats to join in the annual Flag Boat Parade, Thursday, July 4. Get your boats decorated with Flags, leave your docks precisely on time, joining all boats at once at 5 PM, and form an immediate GRAND CIRCLE in the correct direction.

This spectacular Lake-Circle of Patriotism will form our Stars ‘n’ Stripes Show, with Shore Watchers joining in to Wave For America!

The LOW Water Ski Club began this season with a new challenge to be met if they wished to be insured by the umbrella organization, USA Water Ski and Wake Sports. Our drivers had to be “certified,” and that happened on May 19, accomplished by a judge who flew in from the Midwest region. Specific patterns had to be driven by two boats with several water skiers being pulled; water skiers had to learn a standing dock start from platforms newly made by club members. Previously our skiers got up by deep water starts and sitting dock starts. All this was designed to ensure the safety of the skiers. Drivers and skiers were also tested on the proper use of the jump. Those drivers who were not certified in May may continue to pull skiers, but only one at a time; not several.

Come out to Clubhouse Point on July 6 at 6 PM, and see our patriotic ski show which will include some of these new skills the team has acquired.

We look forward to seeing you there and supporting our young people, who worked very hard to master these new techniques.

This was no easy task since we were without a golf pro to help the committee with the many details involved. Event Chair Karen Woods and her large, hard working committee put in hundreds of hours planning the event. We had a wonderful turnout of 64 ladies playing in the tournament. Mother Nature also contributed with the lovely weather. Karen wants to thank the many volunteers who helped in so many ways. Special thanks to Kim Moorefield and the rest of the pro shop staff for their help. Also, Dorothea Barnes did a wonderful job of decorating the clubhouse. Ryan and the clubhouse staff also worked their magic with the delicious fried chicken and fixin’s and great service. Congratulations to all who participated, and to the winners.

Our next major event is the Sadie Hawkins Tournament which takes place on Tuesday, July 9. This is a 2-person team, best ball format, where each LGA member can invite the male golfer of her choice (not her spouse) to be her partner. After golf, the gentlemen will be treated to lunch in the Fareways Café and prizes will be awarded to the winning twosomes. Loretta Yurkus will, once again, chair this very popular, fun event. If you want to participate, but don’t have a partner, Loretta will have a list of lots of willing and able men to choose from. Look for the sign-up sheet and more details to be posted in the ladies’ lounge at the Woods Center.

Bob, a retired Fairfax County Police detective, and currently involved in law enforcement training nationally, is a student, especially, of Civil War cavalry engagements. His presentation will be on Jeb Stuart’s December 1862 Christmas Raid at Burke’s Station.

The Accidental Presidents: Eight Men Who Changed America, by Jared Cohen, is LOW Book Club’s selection for its July 10 meeting. When John Tyler, the first of the “accidental presidents,” became president upon the death of William Henry Harrison in 1841, he had to contend with politicians who claimed that a succeeding vice president could not assume the office, but would only be considered an acting president.

Tyler swiftly and decisively declared his constitutional right to the presidency, thus paving the way for the recognition of the legitimacy of vice presidential succession.

The book provides an anecdotal and interesting look at the transitions surrounding the eight times a vice president became chief executive on the death of a president. The author characterizes only two such presidencies as successful: those of Theodore Roosevelt and Harry Truman, vice presidents, respectively, under William McKinley and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The LOW Book Club meets at 1 PM on the second Wednesday of the month in the meeting room of the Wilderness Library. All are welcome, and no prior notification or attendance commitment is necessary.

Every day, people tell stories. They love talking about their personal life, their family, children, pets and hobbies, and people listen. Yet, many fail to recognize the eyes-glazed-over look of someone who has listened too long and has disengaged themself from the conversation.

In Toastmasters, people are taught how to keep their audience engaged, and to recognize the signs of someone who has lost interest in the conversation. There are many styles of conversation, and vocal variety is used to keep your audience focused on the conversation. Are you a talker who rambles and doesn’t take a breath? Do you have habits that are distracting when you are talking to people? Is your conversation seasoned with interest or do people duck and hide when they spot you in public? If you feel like you may be playing a game of hide and seek with people that you want to talk to (they’re hiding and you’re seeking), the problem may be the stories that you are telling or the length of the conversation.

Wilderness Toastmasters meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM in the Community Center. We are open to anyone who wants to attend, and you are welcome to invite out of the community to anyone who wants to improve their public speaking skills. The updated LOWA Boat test is now available on our website as a convenience for members.

Chris Brode has been hired as the new Golf Pro at the Woods Center; he will start work on June 17.

A final draft of the RFP for a new 3-year Security Services Contract has been completed and will be ready for issue on June 10. It will be sent to five companies for bids.

Contractor Entry Guard will be working on installing TEKControl, a new entry gate access control system, over the summer months. DwellingLive will eventually be discontinued.

5.3 Discussion of Loyalty Program General Manager Phil Rodenberg provided statistics on the LOWA Loyalty Program initiated in September 2018 in an effort to increase overall usage of our amenities. Finance Director Charles Maneval responded to questions from the Board. A chart tracking sales and Loyalty Program participation data was prepared by management to facilitate the discussion.

While initial start-up costs were minimal, ongoing internal costs to administer the program proved higher than expected. More than a third of our members are taking advantage of the program, but the impact on overall amenity usage needs further evaluation. The program will continue in an effort to collect more data for re-evaluation at a later date.

7. MEMBER GENERAL COMMENTS: None.

8. DIRECTOR COMMENTS Directors offered comments on the GPS back gate issue, the new small recycling bins at the Convenience Center, the annual audits, and encouraging members to register for electronic voting. President Wilks thanked all those who helped with planning the Referendum project.

The LOW Veterans Club encourages everyone to attend the Profiles of Honor Tour on Saturday, June 22, in the lower level Clubhouse parking lot. The one-day visit of this mobile museum commemorates the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I and the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Omaha Beach invasion of Normandy during World War II. The visit will begin at 9 AM and end at 4 PM. One goal of the mobile museum is to provide an opportunity for visitors to explore personal connections with Virginia’s involvement in those two wars.

Also, the museum provides an opportunity for visitors to contribute items such as letters, pictures, diaries, or documents related to various Virginia veterans.

These historic documents will be scanned and digitized, to be archived by the Library of Virginia. All items will be returned immediately on Saturday.

The Veterans Club also encourages all residents to participate in the Lake of the Woods golf tournament on Saturday, June 29, benefitting the Blue Star Mothers of Fredericksburg. The 9 AM shotgun start will be played under captain’s choice rules, with all proceeds going to the mission of the Blue Star Mothers. The funds will help the organization in its support of active duty members and veterans. Specifically, they will be used to provide personal items to troops deployed overseas. The next Veterans Club meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 27, at 7 PM in the Community Center. Our guest speaker will be Bill Ashton, the current military veterans agriculture liaison for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The retired Navy Lieutenant Commander will explain what USDA does for veterans, and which veteran benefits are available through the Veterans Administration.

He will also discuss the role of the Virginia’s Joint Leadership Council (he is a member, appointed by the Governor). He will also brief us on some General Assembly bills and how they are affecting veterans.

Covering 27 years in the life of a woman who loved neither wisely nor well, it begins during the blitz on London. Middle-aged Jody Norris (de Havilland) is an air raid warden along with her confidante Lord Desham (Roland Culver.) When she learns that a handsome US pilot, John Lund, is in town, her thoughts flash back to an earlier time in her life, when her love affair with a dashing pilot (also played by Lund in a dual role) resulted in a life lived in secrecy. The film was a spectacular comeback for the actress after being off the screen for two years due to her legal battle seeking to end her contract with Warner Brothers. It was helmed by Mitchell Leisen with a script by the great Charles Brackett who was also Oscar nominated. Shown in celebration of Olivia de Havillandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 103rd birthday on July 1.

Young Jim Hawkins remains human (portrayed by Kevin Bishop), as does Long John Silver, played by an amusingly exaggerated Tim Curry. Shaw Moore (John Lithgow), Ren goes before the city council to have the law overturned so that the school can hold a senior prom. The film, directed by Herbert Ross, was a box office smash and the soundtrack album reached number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. BEACH BLANKET BINGO (American International Pictures, 1965) Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon star in the fifth (and perhaps best known) installment of a series of slapdash musical comedies set against a Malibu backdrop of surfing, sun worshipping and California teenagers that began with AIPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Beach Partyâ&#x20AC;? in 1963. The series' popularity came from a formula of mixing pop acts (in this case The Hondells and Donna Loren) and guest star cameos (Don Rickles, Paul Lynde and the legendary silent comedian Buster Keaton in this feature) with the stars in a minimalist story spiked with goofy, lowbrow humor. Another key to the success of the Beach Party franchise was the theme of teenage freedom, as parental involvement was non-existent.

YANKEE DOODLE DANDY (Warner Bros., 1942) Ostensibly a biopic about jingoistic songwriter-performer George M. Cohan (portrayed with buoyant enthusiasm by James Cagney), the film's patriotic message, celebratory musical numbers and sentimental family saga were aimed at bolstering morale during the early months of World War II. Directed by Michael Curtiz, Cagney's Oscar winning for Best Actor performance was complemented by Walter Huston as his father, Rosemary DeCamp as his mother, real-life sister Jean Cagney as his sister, and Joan Leslie as his perky champion and wife. The film was selected to the National Film Registry in 1993.

THE BILLY TAYLOR SHOW (WNJU, 1965) Well known jazz pianist, composer, broadcaster and educator Dr. Billy Taylor hosted two long running programs on NPR: the pioneering Jazz Alive!, (1977- 1983) and Jazz at the Kennedy Center (1995-2001), and served as an on-air correspondent for CBS News Sunday Morning for many years. In 1965, Taylor hosted The Billy Taylor Show - Jazz in America, produced at WNJU in New Jersey that aired in the New York City market. Luckily he archived the 2â&#x20AC;? videotapes of the program before WNJU could recycle them, a common practice of the day, and donated the tapes to the Library of Congress in 2002.

This compilation of highlights from the show, none of which has been seen since the original broadcasts, includes performances by jazz greats Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Burrell, Benny Powell, Clark Terry, Grant Green, Yusef Lateef, Jerome Richardson, Randy Weston and more.

Full Circle is this Weekend It is not too late to purchase tickets to Full Circle. Michelle Ditzler and her friends will entertain us with a variety of songs including Broadway show tunes and classics, as well as a few new songs. A number of patrons asked about being able to dance. Orange County Humane Society Donates to Animal Shelter

Thanks to the generous donations from many animal-loving Orange County residents, the O.C. Humane Society was recently able to present a check for $11,221 to the county animal shelter. The money will be used for emergency veterinary care for animals at the shelter. The Humane Society also donates to other local animal rescue groups, including Cause 4 Paws, Sunshine Dogs, Rikki’s Refuge, Houses of Wood & Straw, and the Cat Action Team. In addition to monetary support, OCHS also provides volunteer help to many of these organizations. Our volunteers just love animals!

We have a very active Trap/Neuter/Return program to spay and neuter unowned neighborhood cats. The hundreds of cats we have neutered make a big difference for people and cats in our county by preventing unwanted litters of kittens and improving cat behaviors. We have assisted many low income residents by having their cats and their dogs neutered, and have also come to their aid when they have needed emergency veterinary care.

OCHS is an all-volunteer 501c(3) charitable organization. Many of our OCHS volunteers live in LOW, and there is a definite need for new volunteers.

There are many different ways to participate in improving the lives of the animals; some take very little time or effort but can really make a big difference.

You can even help from the comfort of your own home. We have monthly meetings at the Wilderness Branch Library, We would welcome your visit, or you could call us for more information on how you can help the animals.

We accept donations of canned dog and cat food, dry cat food, kitten care items and monetary donations, which are all tax deductible to the full extent of IRS regulations. by Lee Frame, District 5 Supervisor The Orange County ordinances require that any new government tower site in the county have a “Statement of Public Necessity.” This statement is required to be distributed through public media channels so the public can comment on such towers. Any comments received during the 30 day comment period are to be reviewed by the Supervisors before taking action. The four new tower sites will support the new public safety radio system for law enforcement, fire and rescue services. They will also support school bus communication, and eventually wide area broadband. The new towers are located at the Barboursville and Mountain Track Waste Collection sites, at the Taylor Education Administration Complex and at the Rapidan Service Authority Sewage Treatment Plant. One comment supportive of the project was received during the 30 day comment period.

Recently, the Supervisors were briefed on the implementation of Next Generation 911 System (NG911) in Orange County.

NG911 significantly enhances the capability of information flow from the public to the Public Safety Answering Point (the 911 Center) and then to the various first responders (sheriff, fire or rescue). Current 911 systems have the ability to take emergency voice phone calls and transmit voice directions to various first responders.

The Orange County 911 Center has some upgrade, in that it is able to receive text messages. The NG911 goes well beyond this capability, in that emergency calls can use photos, video or data to provide more complete information on such emergencies. That kind of expanded information can be forwarded to the first responders. Picture yourself sending a picture of something you may want to buy for your spouse and checking to see if that is what is wanted. Now imagine someone contacting the 911 Center and providing a picture of an automobile accident so that fire and rescue will be better prepared to respond when they arrive on scene. Vehicles with advanced automobile collision notification systems will be able to send data information directly to the 911 Center and the actual location of the accident will be automatically provided no matter what cell phone company the caller uses. Getting this information to the first responders will require the expanded capability public safety radio system that is being planned for implementation in the county later next year. NG911 implementation will require substantial upgrades to 911 Center equipment and software since NG911 is a digital internet protocol based system, as opposed to current analog systems. Those upgrades will be implemented as the 911 Center moves to the new Public Safety Building late next year. Following the briefing, the Supervisors approved accepting a $281,044 grant from the Virginia Information Technology Agency to apply toward the cost of the upgrades.
