The laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia govern the use of Fireworks on private property within Lake of the Woods. No Fireworks may be discharged on LOWA property except with the permission of the General Manager. Prohibited Items: the following types of Fireworks require a permit to be discharged on private property: firecracker, torpedo, skyrocket, or other substance or thing, of whatever form or construction, that contains any explosive or inflammable compound or substance, and is intended, or commonly known, as fireworks and which explodes, rises into the air, travels laterally, or fires projectiles into the air. Allowed items: The following types of Fireworks do not require a permit to be discharged on private property: sparklers, fountains, Pharaoh’s serpents, caps for pistols, or pinwheels, commonly known as whirligigs or spinning jennies. If You Choose to Use Legal Fireworks Follow these safety tips from the National Safety Council: • Never allow young children to handle fireworks or sparklers (they burn at up to 2,000 degrees). • Older children should use them only under close adult supervision. • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol. • Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands • Never light them indoors • Only use them away from people, houses, and flammable material • Never point or throw fireworks at another person. • Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting. • Never ignite devices in a container • Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks! • Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding. • Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don’t go off or in case of fire.
