The annual elections process is upon us with voting taking place to fill the three Board of Directors positions that will be open very soon. Board members Leighton Cumming, Jeff Johnson (their terms are expiring) and the position vacated by Larry Morlan’s resignation are the positions that will be open. In this issue of Lake Currents, you will find bios for those who are running for the open positions. You will also have the opportunity to watch their video interviews, where they answer questions from the Elections Committee, on Channel 18 and on LOWA.org.

Also, the Candidate’s Forum is scheduled for August 5 from 4 to 6 PM in the Community Center. This is your opportunity to ask the candidates questions, with

each candidate answering the same question. The candidates will need to answer in a two-minute time frame. Please remember that no personal attacks will be allowed or tolerated. The Elections Committee will be reviewing and approving the questions before the moderator is allowed to present them. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email the Elections Committee at election@LOWA.org.

Ballots will be mailed out at the end of July, and will be accepted up until close of the annual Member’s meeting to be held September 3 at 10 AM. The goal of the Elections Committee is to have 1,500 members sign up and vote via electronic voting. Currently there are 1,000 members signed up, so we have a little way to go to reach our goal. Please help.

The construction contract with Wack General Contractor and the loan agreement with Mutual of Omaha Bank have both been approved and signed. The project has begun!

With the beginning of demolition and site preparation, this is a good time to take a look back and see how this project came to be.

Clubhouse pool was built some time around 1967 and served the community well for many years, but concerns over the pool began as early as 2003. The 2003 Master Plan laid out a description of requirements to update the pool to include an enclosed pool and fitness center, improved lighting, a berm to lessen problems with the dam, and increased handicapped parking.

Cost estimates ranged from $2,181,000 to $4,667,000 with an interest rate of 6.5 percent over 20 years. That concept was not approved.

In 2008 another proposal for an enclosed pool and fitness center progressed to the point of the production of working drawings. That proposal did not garner the necessary support and did not move forward.

The current Clubhouse and Fitness Center project began in 2015 with concern about the inadequacy of the Fitness Center. It was quickly realized that the “elephant in the room” was the 50 year old Clubhouse pool. The architectural firm hired by the Association analyzed the site and the condition of the pool and fitness center. Another firm recommended that the fitness center be replaced rather than renovated. There were town halls, committee discussions, Board discussions, coffee and conversations and Lake Currents articles to inform Members about our options. LOWA’s website has continually updated information about the CARC project; check it out.

After almost three years of planning, construction will begin shortly. We can all look forward to dipping our toes in the new pool and exercising in the new fitness center by Memorial Day, 2019!

Trespassing on Private Property. Old habits are hard to break! For years, members walked to the Independence Day festivities and fireworks at the Clubhouse area by crossing a certain private property in the 400 block of Wilderness Drive. The owner at that time encouraged this shortcut. The property sold, and the new owner has insisted members not trespass, which is totally his right. Last July, the new owner was astounded by the number of members walking across the property.

I have seen for myself this informal path. It passes uncomfortably close to the home’s windows and back porch. Imagine if your family was outside when strangers came marching through the shortcut.

The June 22 storm dumping two inches of rain on LOWA in less than an hour reminds us that even the best Lakes Management plans and efforts are no match for the forces of nature. The 500-acre Main Lake rose to 15 inches above normal pool before coming back to a reasonable seven inches above on June 25. The 30-acre Keatons Lake recovered more quickly.

The concrete weir on each dam sets the depth of the lake. The weir is immovable and cannot be adjusted. Each dam has a small sluice gate that can relieve some depth after heavy rainstorms, with limitations. The Maintenance Department inspects the dams on a daily basis, and even hourly at times such as June 22.

LOWA members have asked if there was anything the Association could have done to prevent the Main Lake from rising to the high level it did after the June 22 storm: • Like the rest of the region, Orange County was under a National Weather Service Flood Warning due to heavy and unexpected rains.

• An onsite visual check was made at 4:30 AM but there was only a two to three inch rise from the day before (per the Sutron monitoring system).

• We received more than two inches of rainfall between 5 AM and 6 AM at which time LOWA responded by opening the sluice gate at each lake.

• The Main Lake watershed is 7.18 square miles or 4,557 acres which is almost twice the size of the entire community.

• The sluice gates are helpful but are not designed to release a large volume of water in a short period of time. Opening them too soon can result in low lake levels that can only be replenished by rainfall.

• The sluice gates are designed to release one inch of water per hour (without rainfall). We would have needed to open them at least seven days in advance.

• Storms swamped our roadside ditches, and created swollen creeks and rivers across the region. The Rappahannock River, which is fed by the Rapidan River and affected by rain to the west, including Orange County, roared through Fredericksburg on June 23 at a height of 27 feet above normal level.

LOWA understands that members were frustrated by the volume of water that they saw in and around LOWA. We ask for your patience after large weather events, and note that it may take some time to recover due to the ground and waterways being saturated.

So, I am calling on LOWA members in Sections 1 and 14, especially on or near Wilderness Drive, Federal Road, Flintlock Court, Mt. Pleasant Drive, Carriage Court, Spotswood Drive, Musket Lane and Lakeview Parkway to please honor this new member’s request to not trespass. On July 7, in an effort to help break the shortcut habit, Security will post No Trespassing signs at the street side of the property. On the Sailboat Beach side of the property, there is a berm and sticker bushes.

Private lot trespassing is illegal. Once you have been warned by a posted sign, by verbal command, or in writing, a lot owner can take the matter to the Orange County Sheriff, and you can be charged with a Class 1 Misdemeanor. Thank you for your kind and thoughtful attention to this important issue.

This year’s event will be held on Wednesday, July 4, at 5 PM.* So get your boats decorated with flags, leave your docks precisely at 5, joining all boats at once and forming an immediate Grand Circle in the correct direction. This spectacular Lake-Circle of America will form a Stars ‘n’ Stripes Show.

Shore Watchers will join in to Wave for the Brave!

All captains should start at 5 PM, showing their Stars n Stripes, playing patriotic music and creating a Lake-wide Flag-Fest.

Youth Tennis Clinics Scheduled

by Mi Devens, Co-chair Pickleball/Tennis Committee The Tennis Club, in conjunction with LOW Community Center Activities, is pleased to announce free Youth Tennis Clinics. There will be two sessions, the first on July 30 and 31 for children between 5 and 10 years of age, and the second on August 1 and 2 for children 10 and up. Friday, August 3, will be an all-play session. Each session will run from 9:30 to 11 AM. Adult volunteers will oversee strokes and drills.

Register in person at the Community Center or request a form by email (thayes@lowa.org). Additional registration information can be had by calling the Community Center (540-972-9680). The clinics are subject to weather; in case of rain the clinics will be cancelled for the day. Drinks and snacks will be provided at both sessions. Come join the fun.

Where can you go to exercise your brain, have a low-impact physical work-out, make new friends, have fun, and feel part of an inclusive, friendly community? You may have noticed the members from the Lake of the Woods Square Dance Club having a great time at the Club House or the Community Center. Dances and lessons are held on a regular basis. If you have been curious about square dancing, we have several opportunities for you to come and check us out and try out a few dance steps. Our beginners’ free introductory sessions are coming up over the summer at 7:30 PM on Friday, July 27, or Friday, August 10 or Friday, August 31 (all at the Community Center gym).

This is not the square dancing you might remember from grade school. Now called “Modern Western Square Dancing,� square dancing provides many benefits both to your health and to your social life. It is a great way to exercise your brain and your body. It is a not-too-strenuous form of exercise and no special dancing skills or abilities are required! The brain exercise comes from following the instructions of the caller and coordinating with the other dancers in your square.

We are an extremely friendly group. Newcomers feel instantly welcome.

In fact, square dancing has been described as “Friendship set to music.�

This process was unsuccessful so hopefully a seat on the board will help advance that process.

My professional background required me to view issues from a conceptual perspective as well as a detailed perspective. That established a desire and ability to research issues to remove as much political and emotional bias out of the process of decision making.

What do you think is the most pressing issue facing LOWA? Challenges will continue to be in the forefront of this community as we attempt to establish equilibrium between mandatory expenses, assessment stabilization and amenity operational requirements. What do you think is the most pressing issue facing LOWA? The most pressing issue is the division in the community. I have concluded that at present the principal cause of this division is the perception of many members that the LOWA board does not listen to the suggestions and concerns of members and committees. This problem will not be remedied overnight or with a simple solution, but acknowledging the problem is the first step in solving it.

If elected, what do you see as the most important short and long term goals for the LOWA community?

Short term: Reduce division in LOW; maintain amenities and services.

Long term: Strengthen planning and financial discipline.

Short-term: The need to bring the reserves up to the required levels. The need to improve communication between members by listening and make myself available to members.

Longer-term: The need to improve the health of the Lakes. Improve traffic congestion at the front gate. Repair Lakeview Parkway. Develop a 5-year and a 10-year strategic plan for LOWA.

Leadership skills with proven performance having lead many successful projects and programs made up of diverse project team members. Strong project management discipline in maintaining cost control while delivering scope and on schedule.

What do you think is the most pressing issue facing LOWA? The most pressing issue is the cost control within the LOW budget. I believe that some review of our obligations combined with some new ideas for increasing revenue is needed to control costs and reduce the annual assessment.

If elected, what do you see as the most important short and long term goals for the LOWA community?

Short term: Revisit requirements in CARC project that are driving costs higher to see if a cost savings can be found. Press forward on maintenance actions on the main lake, e.g. Flat Run forebay and our roads.

Long term: Develop plan for fully funding the Capital Reserve Accounts to ensure we have the necessary funds to maintain our capital assets.

Work to reduce member assessments through cost cutting and creative revenue generation ideas.

Work toward financial stability, transparency, and fiscal responsibility.

Adrien “Terry” Terrenoire LOW Residence: 205 Meadowview Lane Family: Ex-wife after 50 years, 3 children, 7 grandchildren Education and Training: Graduated HS in 1963. Attended University of MD for 2 years. Enlisted in Army in March 1966.

Chosen for OCS and was commissioned in April 1967. I have taken several advanced courses since when specific training was needed.

Relevant Experience Summary: Over the past 50+ years I have served in all positions on numerous volunteer Boards. Currently serving as an open member of a 300 member Mustang club in ‘Fairfax, and as an Associate VP for a 200,000 member organization headquartered in Muncie, IN, and I served as Treasurer for another national organization for 12 years.

Career History: After commissioning in 1967 I served as Plt ldr, Btn Asst S-4 in Fort Eustis. In Viet Nam I served as a Group HQ CO for 6 months, then as 92nd Battalion S-2. Upon returning I worked for Montgomery Ward in several management positions until 1980 when I became an insurance agent, then Broker until selling agency in 1995.

“Retired” for 4 years and went back into retail with Sam’s club in 1999. Held various jobs there for 12 years when I retired again and moved to LOW in 2012.

Community Service: None LOWA Committees: Up to this point, I have not had the freedom to serve on any LOW committees but I am looking forward to meeting the numerous volunteers who make LOW the vibrant community it is.

Clubs and Organizations: For my entire life flying and aviation have been foremost in my non-work activities. Since moving to LOW I have rekindled my interest in bowling, and shooting pool with the local “fun bunch.”

Why do you want to serve on the Board?

My desire to serve on the LOWA Board stems from the recent, and ongoing, CARC project and the rejection of the attempt to put spending limits on the Board. I have gotten the distinct impression that some current members have little or no interest in a large segment of our community.

Those of us who are living on fixed incomes, or those still working and raising families without “unlimited” incomes. With my background and in my current situation I feel I can best represent this segment of our residents.

What personal strengths do you bring to the Board of Directors?

My greatest strength is being able to get the biggest bang for every dollar I spend. Having never held a high paying job, and not having an “unlimited” retirement income, I will question every penny we spend and try to weigh to against the overall benefit it will bring to the community as a whole.

On June 6, the LGA Held their Member-Guest Golf Tournament. They had 52 players. Their event had three flights. The format was Ryder Cup: Holes 1-6 was Captain’s Choice, Holes 7-12 was Alternate Shot, and Holes 13-18 was the Best Net Score of the Twosome. We had a tie for low score in the event. The winner was determined by using the last nine score and the Overall Low Score was Sue Richards and Terry Detroia who shot a 42-35=77. First place in the Blue Flight was 41-36=77, shot by Sharon Debnam and Sandy Kenyon. I believe that the ladies enjoyed themselves and had a great time!

On June 16 and 17, LOWA Held the Spring Two Person Team. We had five teams of Men and 12 teams of Senior Men participating for the two days. The Low Gross winner for Men was Paul Hibbs III and Matt Hibbs; they shot a 72-72 =144. The Low Net Winner was Paul Hibbs Jr. and Steve Creegan, who shot a 58-62= 120. For the Senior Men, Low Gross went to Dave Lloyd and Mike Snelson; they shot a 75-73=148. The Low Net winner went to Earl Porter and Paul Yurkus; they shot a 59-60 =119.

Our PGA Junior Golfers have started their season. LOWA U13 won their first match against Fawn Lake with a score of 9 to 3. Our LOWA U16 team lost their first match against Lee’s Hill with a score of 8 to 4. Our juniors practice at LOWA during the week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons starting at 5 PM. The 16U team is preparing our junior golfers for High School Golf Teams starting in July and August. I’ll see you on the course

Another successful ful Wine and Cheese Social was held at the he Sweetbriar Pool on Saturday evening, June une 16. The event, sponsored by FLOW W and organized by the Pools Committee, featured eatured domestic and international cheese e platters, a variety of popular wines and music by many famous “crooners”--Frank Sinatra, inatra, Dean Martin, Michael Buble to name me a few.

It was a beautifull evening--sunny and warm; just the perfect ct weather to visit with friends and neighbors, ghbors, enjoy some wine and cheese and, d, for a few, take a refreshing dip in the pool.

LOW Church Plans Mission Trip to the Navajo Nation

The Lake of the Woods Church will return to the Navajo community at Smith Lake in the northwestern corner of New Mexico June 24 to 30 with our team of teens and adults. Our goal is to support and strengthen local pastors, because they are the ones who will minister daily after the team leaves. This will be done by rehabbing a trailer and doing home repair projects, offering free dinners to the community and conducting bible studies and youth sports activities.

The Smith Lake Navajo nation community of 38,000 acres is in a beautiful and remote area of New Mexico on the broad spine of the continental divide. Water has to be trucked in from 50 miles away to meet the needs of the 951 residents because the lake water has been tainted by the tailings from uranium mining. The community features both a veterans and a senior citizens center.

Senior Associate Pastor Adam Colson and Elder David Blackistone will lead our team of volunteers. You can help our multigenerational team in supporting the Navajo Nation through your donations. The gallery of pictures of Civil War soldiers, most ancestors of LOW residents, for several years hung on the wall opposite the Civil War artifacts cabinet near the Grille Room and Members Lounge. The pictures were taken down in January 2017 for the Clubhouse renovations. Rehanging was delayed somewhat as several levels of discussions were necessary to choose just the right place.

Members of the Clubhouse Committee last fall suggested placing the framed pictures in the Clubhouse entrance foyer to maximize the number of people who would see the display. We were concerned, however, about security, especially since these are loaned items, including a 154 year-old letter!

After some thought, Vice President Jack Phend suggested a shadowbox.

With this great idea, Board Members Craig Rains and Charles Brewer spent time designing the box with Gil Churchill, Glynn Smith and Hal Wood of the LOW Woodworkers Club. Glynn and Hal completed building the box.

On May 31, LOWA maintenance staff installed an electrical connection and mounted the box securely to the wall. Glynn and Hal finished off the installation, including building in self-contained lighting.

On June 5, CWSG Board Members Craig Rains and Charles Brewer filled the shadowbox with the framed artifacts.

Players Award Scholarships

Somehow, we managed to have two beautiful days for our Member/Guest Tournament. We had a very good turnout. Guests came from near and far.

Sheran Marks deserves kudos for doing a great job chairing this event for the second year. She made it clear that she couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have done it without the help of many people. Mike Kuhn and his maintenance crew worked very hard to get the course ready to play. Rea Hargraves and his staff did a great job.

As always, Rea was a great sport, posing for pictures with the players. Bob and Ann Smith and Phyllis Sakole managed to get lots of good pictures of all the participants. The Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cup Tournament is scheduled for the three consecutive Tuesdays: July 31, August 7, and August 14. This is an individual stroke play tournament, similar to the Spring Tournament. Your best two rounds out of three are combined for your tournament score. Ladies will compete within their own flights. Start time for Tuesdays in June is 8 AM. You need to sign in by 7:30 AM.

The Lake of the Woods Players awarded two scholarships this year. On Wednesday, June 13, The Players presented scholarships to Daniel â&#x20AC;&#x153;Connorâ&#x20AC;? Ditzler, and Laura Aylor. Our scholarship program is for graduating seniors who have been active in our group.

Ditzler has been on stage, worked behind the scenes and, during our last play, worked with our sound system. Conner wishes to study this field in college. Aylor has been on stage in various musicals, both here and at her high school. She wishes to pursue a career in musical theater. We wish these young people the very best as they pursue their studies.

Auditions are now over, and a cast has been selected for this fallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Photo provided musical, Hello Dolly. Rehearsals are ready to begin. We will discuss Marilyn Davis (L), Manager of The Players, and Louise Fletcher (R), more about the show as we get sponsor of the scholarships, present closer to the show dates in mida scholarship to Connor Ditzler.

October. In the mean-time, we are still looking for seamstresses who would be willing to make a costume or two for this show, set at the turn of the century. Civic Club Hosts Candidates Reception

Please join the Civic Club on Wednesday, July 11, at 5:30 PM, as we host a reception for the Board of Directors Candidates in the Great Hall of the Clubhouse. We encourage you to mingle with the candidates from 5:30 to 6 PM, with a forum beginning at 6 PM. Each candidate will have two to three minutes to deliver his/ her message to the audience. A cash bar will be available, and light hors dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;oeuvres will be served.

The Lake of the Woods Board candidates are Heidi Brown, Pete Brown, Ralph Debnam, Walt Diercks, Bill Feterle, Jim Logan, Allen Priester, and Adrien Terrenoire.

The candidates will be vying for three Board of Directors vacancies on the 7-member Board. LOWA will mail ballots to lot owners near the end of July, and the balloting will conclude September 1 at the Associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Annual Meeting.

The reception for the candidates is open to all members of the community. Please plan to attend so you may become better acquainted with the slate of candidates. We look forward to seeing you there.

LOW Fire and Rescue Celebrates EMS Day

LOW Fire and Rescue celebrated EMS day on Saturday, May 26 with a Virginia State Police K-9 Unit demonstration, a visit from the PHI Air Care Rescue Helicopter, and displays of fire and rescue equipment. Former rescue chief Jack Kelley demonstrated climbing the 105 foot tall ladder truck for a cool view of the lake and the visitors far below. Family members especially enjoyed the K-9 demonstration, along with the Bounce House, popcorn, and operating the sirens on the safety vehicles. PHI Air Care, a private medevac company located in Fredericksburg, provided the helicopter and showed our visitors how to load patients and safely control the landing area. The Orange County Sherriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office gave tours of their safety vehicles, and discussed the TRIAD program, which provides services and information to seniors to prevent crime. The Coast Guard Auxiliary talked about boating safety, and the Rappahannock EMS Council Stress Management Team discussed crisis intervention for first responders. A highlight of the event for visitors was the dunk tank featuring chiefs McInnis and Mars.

We would like to thank DanceXpressions for their performance, True Value Hardware for providing equipment, I Heart A.R.T for the music, and our Fire and Rescue Auxiliary for the baked goods and educational materials for the kids.

The selection for the July 11 LOW Book Club meeting is The Luncheon of the Boating Party. If the title sounds familiar, it is because many people are acquainted with Renoir’s eponymous painting that is located in the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. Fictionally narrated by the artist and several of his subjects, the book by Susan Vreeland (Girl in Hyacinth Blue, a collection of short stories about a work by the Dutch painter, Vermeer), describes the events and scenes behind the creation of the painting.

The LOW Book Club meets at 1 PM on the second Wednesday of the month in the meeting room of the Wilderness Library. The selection for the August 8 meeting is the The Paris Secret, by Karen Swan, a familiar and complicated tale of treasured and valuable art works that disappeared during WWII and have resurfaced in a long-shuttered Paris apartment.

Estate planning is a topic some believe is taboo because it means making decisions that you may not want to face. Yet as we count birthdays, we also think more about life and our trinkets and treasures that we have collected, and who we want to pass them on to. Life worth is not something to take lightly, although you may often think, “I don’t have two nickels to rub together.” For a family member, those two nickels could be a piece of jewelry they have admired since they were a child. Perhaps a daughter would want your wedding ring, but her sister may have the same wish and never shared it -- she just assumed it would pass to her because she was older. Think about your children bickering as they were growing up; it does not automatically disappear because they are mature adults. Communicating with family members may help to prevent family wars, but an estate plan makes clear what your wishes are.

Having a will, health care directive, power of attorney and life insurance are very important components of your estate plan, but you cannot add your family heirloom into an insurance policy. An estate plan covers tax law changes, state to state moves, home ownership in another state, inheritance laws, guardians for your children, Medicaid planning for your beneficiaries, remarriage, divorce, selling your home, new grandchildren and being finicky and changing your mind. How you felt when you originally established your estate plan may have changed as circumstances and family relationships change.

AARP Meeting to Feature Elwood Manor

He has been a volunteer for seven years and a member of the Board of Directors for four years. As chairman of the Programs Committee, he is responsible for all outdoor activities at Elwood Manor. He hosts about 10 living history programs each year.

The Friends of Wilderness Battlefield is a non-profit group dedicated to supporting the Park Service on the Wilderness Battlefield. They host tours of Elwood Manor, which is the last building on the Wilderness Battlefield existing from the Civil War. It served as the Union 5th Corps headquarters during the Battle of the Wilderness.

The house dates from the 1790’s. However, a dwelling existed on the property as far back as the American Revolution. Lafayette and his troops camped on the grounds in 1781.

Embrace this opportunity to learn more about the history in our own backyard. The famous Civil War battle will come alive with both words and visuals.

Come join us on Monday July 16, in the Great Room of the Clubhouse.

Witness Civil War living history Monday morning, July 16! Robert Lookabill, chairman of the Program Committee for Elwood Manor will transport us to the Wilderness Battlefield. The manor is right in our back yard on Route 20.

Our speaker comes to us with a background rich in United States history.

He was a high school history teacher for 10 years before becoming a government employee. After retirement, his love for history led him to seek a volunteer opportunity with the Friends of Wilderness Battlefield.

The July tennis social will be held Saturday, July 14, at the Hollyfield Park courts. Play begins at 9 AM. This is a round robin format – everyone gets to play, so all are welcome. We change partners every 20 to 25 minutes, so nobody sits out very long. Players at all levels will be attending and playing.

As in previous years, we ask that each player or couple bring a brunch item to share for the socializing after play – approximately 11 AM. Balls and drinks are provided. The cost is only $2 per player.

Pop + Fizz Sparkling Rosé, Willamette Valley, Oregon, Non-Vintage – The world is becoming infused with loads of rosé wines. This one is unusual and surprisingly good – sparkling, off-dry (i.e., slightly sweet) and very refreshing.

Aromas of honey and strawberry and a palate of tropical fruit, strawberry, and creamsicle make this wine unique. Definitely a patio/deck summer wine!

Price: About $5 for a 375 ml can (equals half a normal bottle).

Domaine Le Virolys, Viré-Clessé, Bourgogne, France, Vintage 2016 – What a fantastic white Burgundy! This dry, un-oaked, Chardonnay from the Maconnais area villages of Viré and Clessé possesses aromas of white peach and a hint of lemon. Your palate will be treated to a clean, fresh, lowacid wine with flavors of apple and pear. One glass is definitely not enough!

Try this great wine with crab or shrimp salad, or lighter cheeses. Put a slight chill on it to really appreciate its great flavors. Price: About $19 a bottle.

Seastone Vinho Verde, Vinho Verde, Portugal, non-vintage – In Portuguese, Vinho Verde translates to “green wine.” If you look at this wine style you can detect a slight green hue and, like all wines of this type, it is slightly fizzy. This particular Vinho Verde is medium-bodied with a “nose’ of fresh-cut flowers (especially hyacinth) and flavors of apple and tropical fruit.

Summer salads and white fish go very well with this little gem. Price: About $8 a bottle.

Château Lagüe (pronounced Lagoo), Grand Vin de Bordeaux, Fronsac, Bordeaux region, France, Vintage 2015 –20 was a great Bordeaux vintage!

This dry red wine is from the Fronsac area, northeast of the city of Bordeaux, and it goes beyond the ordinary. Made primarily from Merlot, it is very dark red in color, with a “nose” of earthy fruit, and flavors of black cherry, plum, leather, and a hint of tobacco. If you are looking for a red wine to go with grilled meats, this would be an outstanding choice. Price: About $15 a bottle.

Yet, fear of talking to people can be what is holding you back from gaining new clients. Picking up the phone is an old way of meeting new contacts, telephone books are obsolete, and we are still paying for landlines to screen the calls from telemarketers. Why we still have to pay for telemarketers to call us is beyond me!

Networking is one of the easiest ways to meet people, but so many are afraid because they have to speak in front of other people. How in the world do you think you are going to open up doors to new clients if you are afraid to talk to people? Learning how to speak confidently is not as fearful as people believe. I know you have heard practice makes perfect, but perfection is not what you need, it is clients. Clients don’t expect you to be perfect, they expect you to follow through with the business you are offering them and communication comes with follow through.

Toastmasters helps people learn how to confidently communicate and say what you mean in sequential order. You learn how to begin speaking with a beginning, middle and conclusion and to cohesively put together a presentation that makes sense.

How can Toastmasters bring you closer to achieving your clients? You can meet new people, learn how to speak in front of people, learn how to engage in open-ended conversation instead of yes and no answers, and, often, create relationships that help generate business and referrals.

Wilderness Toastmasters is a new club that is meeting at the Community Center on the first and third Tuesday of the month between 6:30 and 8 PM. It is open to ages 18 and up. History Comes To LOW

by Bill Derryberry, LOWA Member Tomorrow, June 30, the Virginia WWI and WWII Profiles of Honor Tour mobile museum will visit Lake of the Woods. The mobile museum will be parked in the clubhouse lower level parking lot. Tours of the exhibit will begin at 11 AM, and continue until 4 PM. The mobile museum, which is free and open to the public, features stories and artifacts from dozens of Virginians who served in World War I and World War II, as well as a full-scale model of a M5A1 Stuart tank. The tour, which brings to life Virginia’s integral role in world history, is part of a statewide commemoration marking the 100th anniversary of World War I and the 75th anniversary of World War II.

The Profiles of Honor Tour will bring an interactive exhibit, housed in a 36-foot trailer. It has been to museums, schools, libraries, historical societies and local events throughout Virginia. LOW is fortunate to have this visit as it must be scheduled almost two years in advance.

The mobile tour will also bring document scanning equipment, supported by the Library of Virginia. Visitors are invited to bring World War I and World War II-related images, letters, and documents to be scanned, preserved, and made publicly accessible in the Library of Virginia. Scanning will be done in the Information Kiosk in the CHLL parking lot. Bring letters, documents, discharge papers, award documents, letters and photographs from WWI and WWII. Don’t miss this opportunity to see and learn of the contributions of Virginians to the history of these events from the home front to the frontlines.

Most pickleball players realize the health benefits of two to three hours of play a few times a week: weight control/loss, improvements in cardiovascular health, flexibility, range of motion, reaction time, positive social interaction (which contributes to overall happiness) and pure fun that has driven the sport’s phenomenal growth all over the world and here at LOW in recent years.

The British Journal of Sports Medicine in 2016 reported: “If you want to try to extend your life, a new study suggests that taking up racquet sports, like pickleball, tennis, racquetball, etc., might help. Researchers found that people who played racquet sports had an almost 50 percent lower risk of dying from any cause during the 15 year study. And playing a racquet sport was linked to a 56 percent lower risk of death from heart disease during the study period.”

One of the highlights of the parade is the passing of the line of classic cars to include original, restored, street rods and other modified cars and trucks.

LOW Veterans Club 4th of July Reminder

by Fred Pulis, Communications Chairman The LOW Veterans Club would like to remind residents of the upcoming celebration of the signing of The Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. This year, the annual LOW parade will occur on Saturday, July 7.

This year will be the 241st anniversary of the unanimous signing of the declaration by the 13 United States of America. All 56 delegates are found on the document signed in Philadelphia.

As the day approaches, the LOW Veterans Club would like to quote some of the most significant parts of the document: “When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to separation.”

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

This revolutionary document started this country on its way to being a democratic republic and should rightly be honored and celebrated on the 4th of July each year.

It is time for the LOW veterans to show their pride in this country and march in the parade behind our club banner. If you are a veteran, or have a relative who is or has served in the United States Armed Forces, please march with us.

Lake Currents June 29, 2018

The Orange County Supervisors just authorized the execution of a contract with Harris Corporation for a Project 25 Public Safety Radio System. The system will incorporate six radio antennas and/or towers throughout the county. Those structures also will include provisions for the equipment necessary to provide broadband internet coverage. One of those antennas will be mounted on the Rapidan Service Authority water tank located near LOW on Flat Run Road. They will be connected to the Emergency Communications (911) Center via the new fiber optic system being installed in the county to the maximum extent possible, or via microwave links. The current radio system and equipment have limited capability and support for them is being phased out. Today there are many places where emergency responders (police, fire and rescue) cannot reliably communicate with the communications center, especially on portable devices inside buildings. This is of serious concern where a sole deputy is involved in a dangerous situation.

These radios will be installed on all Sheriff’s Department vehicles, all fire trucks and all ambulances in the county, as well as school busses.

Radio connectivity is guaranteed at 97 percent for mobile (vehicle) radios, 96 percent for portable radios on the street and 85 to 91 percent for portable radios inside buildings. There are also features that allow portable radios to connect through the Wi-Fi systems in buildings that have them.

Digital connectivity through computers is also possible. The radios have a wide variety of new functions that will enable possible new public safety capabilities. The contract with Harris Corporation includes training and logistic support. Construction and installation are scheduled to begin in 2019, with final acceptance in 2020.

If you have driven down Route 20 recently, you may have seen the big orange-colored cable conduit reels and the equipment that is placing that conduit in the ground. The Orange County Broadband Authority recently approved renewal contracts for radio engineering consulting services, for the fiber optic products and installation services, and a new contract for electrical engineering consulting services. These contracts are needed to continue the installation of the fiber optic system in the county.

On June 16, the Orange County Landfill, the Solid Waste committee and StreamSweepers conducted a tire recycling amnesty event. This event was also supported by over 20 local businesses. StreamSweepers is a not-forprofit river maintenance and restoration service, staffed by young adults from Central Virginia who remove small to large trash items from the river beds and banks. This tire amnesty event was conducted in part to keep tires out of our local streams and rivers and to keep them from being dumped in the ditches along our roads. As I talked to the people dropping off tires, I asked where they came from. Some farmers said that they had been dumped on their property. The normal cost for disposal of tires at the landfill is $2.50 each, but for this event we would take up to 12 tires without fees. Before the event started, traffic was backed up alongside the road from the landfill to Route 20. Over 135 vehicles/trailers brought in 1,332 tires which will be recycled, and will not be cluttering our county.
