President’s Letter

You should have received your ballot for the ECC and Lot Charges referendum by this time. Initially, the Board had set the end date for September 2, the same day as the Annual Meeting of the Membership.

However, there were concerns regarding having two proxies for the same meeting, i.e. one proxy for the referendum and one for the election of Directors.

The concern was the possibility that two proxy appointments for the same meeting might result in the invalidation of one or both of them. In addition, the history of referendums in Lake of the Woods is that it usually takes more than three months to ensure that the Membership cast enough ballots to determine whether a referendum will pass or not.

September will be a busy month. Initially, the Board must seat those Members elected to serve as Directors and vote for Directors to serve as President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary. There follows a Board retreat and goal setting. It is also the start of the budget process, including the reserve study and other matters. October and November will be busy months due to the budget process. The joint budget hearings with Finance/Planning are December 3-5. December 8 is the holiday party and December 9 is a Monday.

Therefore, December 10 seems the best date to hold the Special Meeting of the Membership to close or continue the referendum. Therefore, we voted to change the date of the Special Meeting of the Membership to close the referendum or continue it to a date to be determined at that time, to December 10, 2019.

The referendum seeks to update our Covenants to provide a limited right of appeal from Environmental Control Committee decisions and to authorize lot violation charges for those members who fail to maintain their property according to the Covenants and Regulations.

One question will determine if there will be a limited right to appeal from denials of plans, specifications, and/or details by the ECC. It contains four subparts, (1) changing the quorum language from three (3) to be a majority of the ECC; (2) establishing that the Committee shall approve or disapprove plans, specifications and details within thirty (30) days; (3) providing that Members may appeal denial of plans, specifications and/or details to the Board, and (4) clarifying that the Committee has authority to propose regulation changes to the Board of Directors regarding the height and size requirements of all types of buildings and structures, subject to Board approval.

Please vote “yes” to this question. This provides Members with a less costly avenue for resolving disputes about the ECC’s actions on plans, specifications and/or details, and allows the Board to resolve such disputes in whole or in part. Members will still have the right to pursue legal action after the Board’s decision if they so choose.

If this part of the referendum passes, the Board will amend the Bylaws and provide the actual procedure of appeal. In many instances, appeals will be heard in open session with opportunity for the Member to state their complaint and for the ECC to offer their explanation. In some cases, it is possible that appeals may be heard in Executive Session, subject to the rules for such meetings.

Another question provides the Board with authority to adopt reasonable rules and regulations as may be permitted by applicable laws, including the ability to levy and assess violations charges established by the Virginia Property Owner’s Association Act. Such charges will be collectable as an assessment, including placing a lien against a Member’s property.

Please vote “yes” to this question. Members are concerned about their property values. This measure will encourage Members to take care of their property as set forth in the governing documents by keeping the structure and lot in reasonable order thereby helping all property values. This provides the ability for the Association to charge a Member not taking care of their property in accordance with the governing documents $10 a day for 90 days for ongoing violations and $50 for one-time violations. We hope that Members will respond to such notices by taking care of their property before charges are assessed. In addition, this provision provides for all charges that a Board may authorize. LOWA Welcomes New Golf Pro

Chris Brode, LOWA’s new golf pro, is not a classic lifelong golfer. He began playing at age 21, while serving in the Navy at Naval Air Station New Orleans in the early 1990’s. His 23 years in the golf industry since, though, have given him a broad understanding and a quite apparent enthusiasm for the sport.

“I am big on growing the game of golf,” he explains.

Before taking over the golf pro position here on June 17, he was an instructor/teacher with the Golf Academy of America in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

C hr “One reason I took the job here,” he says, “was is Br ode because it is so different, and I am looking to challenge myself.”

After several weeks on the job, Brode feels that it is going to be “a very good challenge, one which I am up for.”

His initial impressions of LOW have been largely positive.

“The membership is awesome! I can’t say that enough. Everybody’s been very supportive. Of course, they all have their own opinions, which is a good thing. . . most of the time,” he grins. “And the golf course has a LOT of potential.”

“From tee to green, inside the rough, on a scale of one to five, I’d give it a 3 ½ to 4. Outside the rough, it gets a little . . . rough. The layout is wonderful.

It’s challenging, which is what I like, but I think it caters to both the better player and the beginner.”

His personal list of what he hopes to accomplish here includes building the membership, retraining his staff to provide more service to the members, attracting more golf tournaments, and selling more merchandise.

“I’d like to get this looking like a golf shop,” he says.

Also high on his to-do list: “Trying to learn about the membership, find out what their needs are, and cater to those needs. I’m a big advocate of service, establishing a rapport with the membership, getting creative, and trying different things.”

His initial messages to community members are simple.

“Come in and say ‘Hi.’ Tell me what you want. What are your needs? Let me help. Let’s try new things.”

“But, mainly . . .thank you!”

July 6 Car Show was a Success

It was a hot 90 degree day, but 47 collector cars came to the Upper Level Clubhouse Parking Lot. Bill Derryberry did a fantastic job of putting this show together. Many of these vehicles came from inside LOW. Nine trophies were presented to the top cars in various classes. The following local businesses helped fund this fun-filled event: Auto Medic-1, Derrow Auto Sales, DesignCraft Homes, LOW Marine and Service Plaza, and True Value Hardware.

Happy summertime, LOW! A cold beer in a frosty mug from the Clubhouse can hit the spot on a hot July day. But selling beer, wine and distilled spirits comes with a big responsibility. Following Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control laws is a responsibility we take seriously. As GM, I never want a member to get injured after drinking adult beverages at the Clubhouse or Fareways Café. From time to time, members want to host an event with alcohol in the Community Center, Sweetbriar Park Pavilion or other LOWA common area locations.

Here are six things to know about LOWA and alcoholic beverages.

Q. Where does LOWA sell alcohol?

A. Clubhouse and Fareways have full liquor licenses to serve beer, wine and distilled spirits.

Q. If I buy alcohol from Clubhouse or Fareways, can I take it off premises?

A. No. Open containers must be consumed inside or on the Clubhouse deck or Fareways porch. Members may not carry open containers off premises. However, beer and wine purchased from Fareways can be taken onto the golf course. This was a question at Fareways when a member wanted to pour his mixed drink into a plastic cup and walk out of the building. This is a big no-no to ABC. While beer and wine can be served on the porch, no distilled spirits can be carried outside! There are no off premises liquor (distilled spirits) licenses in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Therefore liquor cannot leave the establishment. As for Fareways, distilled spirits cannot leave the building, since our outside patio is not completely fenced. Clubhouse can serve distilled spirits as well as beer and wine on the deck.

Q. What training do LOWA employees have?

A. LOWA hires bartenders that are experienced in dealing with patrons and alcohol consumption. They take an ABC-sponsored course called TIPS (Training for Intervention Procedures) to know the signs of when to stop serving a patron.

Q. What do the LOWA Regulations say about alcohol?

A. The primary rules are in Regulation IV, Individual Behavior: IV.A.3. Members or registered tenants, their families and guests are responsible for their conduct with respect to the consumption of alcohol and will comport themselves with due regard for the common good of LOWA, including the rights of other members, registered tenants, their guests and families. (3/1/14) IV.A.4. LOWA employees serving alcohol have the right and obligation to refuse service to any person requesting service in violation of the law or whenever the person requesting service has, in the employee’s judgment, and at their sole discretion, consumed an excessive amount of alcohol in a given time period. (3/1/14) As always, members are responsible for themselves and their guests.

This also means our bartenders can cut off a patron. No ifs, ands or buts. As I say to the bartenders, “You are the Sheriff in here, and what you say goes.”

LOWA and individual servers can both be fined for ABC violations. LOWA can have its license suspended or even revoked.

In addition, the Clubhouse, Fareways and Community Center regulations require strict compliance with ABC regulations. Golf Course regulations state that only alcoholic beverages purchased through the Fareways Cafe are allowed on the golf course.

General manager from p. 3 Q. Where can LOW members have alcohol in the common areas?

A. Individual members can bring their own alcohol to beaches and parks like Clubhouse Point. No alcohol at the Pools, except for events with written approval of the General Manager. No alcohol at the Fitness Center. If groups or clubs wish to serve alcohol, the group will need to get a one-day license from Virginia ABC. Typically these events are at the Community Center and Sweetbriar Pavilion. The Pools Committee recently partnered with Friends of Lake of the Woods to host a wine and cheese social at Clubhouse Pool.

Q. Does LOWA Security enforce alcohol laws?

A. Yes, with an explanation. LOWA Security will enforce LOWA regulations in our restaurants, buildings, parks, and beaches. Security Road Patrol and Lake Patrol will detain an inebriated individual for law enforcement to process. Security does not administer breathalyzer tests.

Save a date in October for attending the fall performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. This musical, with words by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Weber, is the story of the youngest son of Jacob and his jealous older brothers. The book of Genesis recounts the story of Joseph receiving a coat that makes his brothers angry; so angry that they sell Joseph into slavery.

The story continues with Joseph’s life. This musical, although not the first written, was the first Rice and Lloyd Weber work to be performed publicly.

Evening performances will be on October 18, 19, 25, and 26 at 7:30 PM; matinees on October 20 and 27 at 2 PM. Tickets sales will likely begin very early in September.

We welcome and extend an invitation to anyone who likes theater, and is interested in joining our group, to attend our meetings. These are held on the second Wednesday of the month at the Community Center in Classroom 1, starting at 7 PM. Our next meeting is August 14.

The Elections Committee invites all Members to join us for the Candidates Forum on July 21 from 4 to 6 PM in the Community Center.

Format for the Forum is as follows:  Doors open at 3 PM for members to present their questions to the committee on 3x5 cards provided by the committee. The cards will not be taken after 3:45 PM.  All questions will be reviewed by the committee.  Once questions are reviewed and approved they will be placed in a basket and selected at random.  Candidates will have three minutes for their introduction.  Each Candidate gets two minutes to answer a question.  Elections Committee will not approve any personal attacks towards Candidates or the Current Board.  No questions will be taken during the Forum.

The Elections Committee encourages you to review Candidate bios and listen to their interviews. We will not ask them the same questions during the forum.

LOWA Pickleball Club Why do you want to serve on the Board?

I am presently serving a one-year term as a result of a resignation of a prior member. This has been a great learning experience in an extremely important year. I want to continue to serve and complete the work we have started as a Board. We have implemented and continue to review internal financial controls. We recovered the embezzled funds from our previous Director of Finance and have set in motions actions to recover our expenses related to that effort. The CARC project has been monitored weekly and opened on time on June 22. We are launching a referendum that will allow our members to vote on two issues, an appeal process for ECC decisions, and authorizing reasonable charges for violations to our regulations as established by the Virginia Property Owners Association. I want to continue my part in the working group exploring fiber optic broadband for LOWA. What personal strengths do you bring to the Board of Directors?

My experience on the BOD this year has thoroughly prepared me to serve a full term. My level-headed approach serves me well as a board

member. I do my research in depth as I prepare to make decisions.

As a BOD member, we each represent all of our members. This position is much like a full-time job when done properly. There is sacrifice of personal time, however, it is an honor to serve our community. We live in a wonderful community. Our founders wisely established that there is only one class of membership. This makes all of our amenities available to every member that chooses to use them. We have so much to offer, yet we are not at all pretentious. I recognize a diversity of ideas and means exist. I work to restore civility in the discussions of our needs of today and plans for the future. I treat all members with respect.

What do you think is the most pressing issue facing LOWA? We need to balance the financial strains of a 52-year-old infrastructure and the impact on our HOA assessment. The expense of operations will continue to rise, so we must be diligent in keeping those costs as low as possible while maintaining a high standard of performance. Our BOD is researching options for stormwater management. We are restoring trust in our representative governance. I believe we have made great progress in listening to our members and committees in our decision-making process.

If elected, what do you see as the most important short and long-term goals for the LOWA community?

Short term: Complete 14th Hole Restoration project. Finalize plans and complete the Flat Run Forebay project. This is vital to the health of our main lake. Change the schedule of our full replacement reserve studies in Miller Dodson reports from five years to three years and continue the annual updates.

Long term: We are assessing the need for fencing along Route 3 as more commercial development is slated across from our community. The Germanna Wilderness Area Plan will have a huge impact on traffic patterns and security issues for LOWA. Continue research and work on stormwater management. To that end, I would like us to equip our staff with the means do more frequent leaf removal from our ditches. Make fiber optic broadband available to our members. We must maintain and / or improve our amenities to protect the value of our homes.

Lake of the Woods Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company Receives Grant

The Lake of the Woods Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company recently received $2,560 from The Power of Change that will enable the department to improve scene safety for personnel responding to motor vehicle accidents.

“This critical funding will allow the company to better protect our volunteer fire personnel, as well as those involved in the accident, by reducing the speed of vehicles approaching the accident scene,” said Fire Chief Bob Mars. “This new equipment, the Aervoe Portable Speed Bump, includes both reflective strips and LED lights which allow us to more safely secure the scene of the accident by quickly deploying visible speed control devices while also improving reflective gear used by our personnel.”

The Power of Change receives its funding from Rappahannock Electric Cooperative members who volunteer to have their electric bill rounded-up to the next highest whole dollar.

“It is crucial that the Lake of the Woods Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company has the resources it needs to ensure the safety of our personnel and our community. In fact, we are only the second department in this area to purchase this type of scene safety equipment,” said Mars. “I want to thank REC and The Power of Change for providing this muchneeded grant funding.

The LOW Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company expects to begin deploying the new equipment over the summer, after all personnel have been properly trained on using it.

The 37th annual Lake of the Woods Visual Arts Council Art Show and Sale is September 28 and 29 at the Community Center. The show is open to LOW property owners and residents who want to exhibit or sell their own original art, including any media. The show is a delightful community event, showcasing LOW talents. Each year we are surprised by the variety of the art exhibited. Professionals as well as hobbyists are invited to enter.

Newcomers, you are welcome!

Setup for the show is Saturday morning and close Sunday afternoon, so weekenders can participate too. Show hours are 10 AM to 5 PM both days.

Entry forms, with complete details, will be available July 20 at the Holcomb Building foyer and the Community Center. The entry deadline is September 21. Admission to the show is free, but there is a fee to exhibit and LOWVAC charges a 15 percent commission on sales at the show. Proceeds from the 2018 show enabled LOWVAC to donate $3800 to Orange County art teachers!

The Woodworkers will join the show again with their 1”x3”x8’ challenge, the Lake Authors will have books to sell and Sunday afternoon, LOWLINC will repeat their very popular wine tasting event. The advanced session, July 1 through 5, allowed experienced young sailors the opportunity to practice more advanced boat handling maneuvers and perfect their sailing technique.

In more than a dozen years operating the sailing camps, the Lake of the Woods Sailing Club has trained several hundred young campers in the sport of sailing.

On August 17, the Sailing Club will hold its annual distance race, the Round Turtle Island Challenge, down the length of the main lake, around Turtle Island, and returning to finish. Do you want to know a fun way to exercise your brain, have a low-impact physical work-out, make new friends and feel part of an inclusive and friendly community? You may have noticed members of the Lake of the Woods Square Dance Club having a great time at the Clubhouse or the Community Center. Dances and lessons are held on a regular basis. If you have been curious about square dancing, we have several opportunities for you to come and check us out and try out a few dance steps at no charge. Our beginners’ free introductory drop-in sessions are coming up on Friday, August 9, August 23, and September 13 from 7:30 to 9:30 PM at the Community Center.

This is Modern Western Square Dancing, and it is for anyone. It is done to all types of music and is easy to learn. If you can walk to music, then you can learn to square dance. Dress is casual; wear comfortable shoes. Our drop-in sessions will introduce you to a few basic steps, and you will be dancing to music within minutes.

We are an extremely friendly group. Newcomers feel instantly welcome.

In fact, square dancing has been described as “Friendship set to music.”

LOW Community

Generous donations of several boats in the past year allowed the Junior Sailing Program of Lake of the Woods Sailing Club to offer sailing camp this summer to a record number of young would-be sailors.

In two camp sessions, the club provided sailing training to 28 youngsters between the ages of eight and fifteen.

The first beginners’ session, June 24 through 28, exposed inexperienced sailors to parts of the boat, rigging, boat safety, seamanship, boat handling and teamwork. The young sailors demonstrated their newly-acquired skills in Optimist Pram, Sunfish, Laser and Zuma sailboats.

In addition to basic sailing maneuvers like tacking and gybing, the Photos by Dan McFarland campers were taught safety-related (L-R) Cassie Weiss and Ellis skills such as capsize recovery, the safety position and getting out of irons, Morgan practice sailing skills at a problem caused by attempting to sail the LOW Sailing Club-sponsored too close to the wind, resulting in loss of sailing camp this summer.

Veterans Club Explains New Information Sites

Mention retirement to someone in their 20â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and most likely they will say â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have plenty of time. â&#x20AC;?Talk life Insurance and you can bet the words will be, â&#x20AC;&#x153;why do I need life insurance? I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t plan on dying anytime soon.â&#x20AC;?

Are you guilty of saying those same words? Time does fly and you can never predict when something can happen that can bring you closer to death. One of the saddest moments of my day is when I see a Go Fund Me account set up for funeral or medical expenses for a family member. It happens too often in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s society and an unfortunate tragedy can strike anyone. The turmoil of having to set up a donation website to help with expenses can be devastating, because the fear of not having the needed funds adds a layer of stress that could have been avoided. The time to prepare for the future is before the future happens.

Knowledge Club meets on the second Thursday at 6:30 PM and third Tuesday at 10 AM in the Community Center. On August 8, our guest speaker is a registered dietitian who will speak about plant based nutrition. The guest speaker on August 20 will discuss protecting your long range financial goals. One element of the LOW Veterans Club mission is to educate members and non-affiliated veterans about benefits available to them. Recently new information sites for veterans have become available.

One of the most comprehensive descriptions of veteran rights and privileges is contained in the website ebenefits.va.gov. It is considered the gateway to veteran benefit information.

At this location, you can apply for disability compensation, VA health care, pension benefits, and add or remove a dependent from coverage. Other benefits such as a home loan guarantee or the GI Bill is also available for application.

This same location allows veterans to manage their benefits. A veteran can check and monitor their compensation claim status, or do the same for supporting documents.

In addition, veterans can use the site to manage their healthcare. It is possible to share their VA medical records. They can check or change status of prescription refills, make VA medical appointments, or acquire hearing aids and prosthetic socks.

Veterans can also learn about the status of proposed Virginia legislation concerning upcoming General Assembly bills and how they are affecting veterans.

Fleet Reserve Association Representative and Virginia Joint Leadership Council Advisor Bill Ashton, informed the LOW Veterans Club members at our June meeting that one current piece of legislation concerns deleting the state income tax payment for veteran retirees.

The LOW Veterans Club will not meet in July, but will meet again on August 22. Our scheduled guest speaker will be World War II veteran Alex Salustri.

On September 11, the Central Intelligence Agency Retirees of the VA Battlefields Chapter welcome Francis Gary Powers, Jr. to discuss his father, Gary Powers, the American pilot whose Central Intelligence Agency U-2 spy plane was shot down while flying a reconnaissance mission in Soviet Union airspace, causing the 1960 U-2 incident. Powers will speak on the Cold War, the U-2 incident, the controversy that surrounded his father, and Steven Spielberg’s 2015 movie Bridge of Spies. He will also have copies of his book, Spy Pilot: Francis Gary Powers, the U-2 Incident and a Controversial Cold War Legacy.

Lunch will be served at the Clubhouse with a choice of roasted pork loin or Tilapia with lobster sauce for $23 per meal. Your meal will also include salad, roasted red potatoes, seasonal vegetable medley, tea/coffee, and dessert.

Cash bar will begin at 11 AM, then lunch at noon, followed by Powers’ talk.

At its monthly meeting July 26, 10:30 AM in the Clubhouse Great Hall, the Civil War Study Group will host noted historian Jeff Hunt, speaking on his latest book, Meade and Lee at Bristoe Station: The Problems of Command and Strategy after Gettysburg. CWSG Vice President Jack Phend was fortunate to convince Hunt to include a stop at LOW during his East Coast book tour.

This book follows the well-received Meade and Lee After Gettysburg: The Forgotten Final Stage of the Gettysburg Campaign, from Falling Waters to Culpeper Courthouse.

Hunt teaches history at Austin (Texas) Community College and is Director of the Texas Military Forces Museum, the official museum of the Texas National Guard.

On Thursday, July 18, at 11AM, the Friends of Wilderness Battlefield and descendants of Elizabeth Frances “Phenie” Tapp held a brief ceremony to rededicate her grave marker at Oak Hill Cemetery in Fredericksburg. After FoWB volunteer Daniel Sheron noticed that her grave marker was in need of repair, FoWB and Phenie’s descendants took immediate steps to make that happen. Out of respect to the part she played in the history of the Wilderness area, and the larger than life character that Phenie was, those involved in the restoration felt a brief ceremony and unveiling of the repaired stone was warranted. The grave is located in Section B, Row 6, Space 33 in the cemetery.

Networking is one of the scariest events to attend, especially for a first-time visitor to a new networking group. At Toastmasters, you can learn how to blend in flawlessly with the right conversation and be the conversation starter in a group. One of the greatest nuggets in joining a Toastmasters Club is a variety of ways to increase your conversational comfort zone and learning how to step outside of that comfort zone. Another benefit is learning how to write speeches or prepare an outline to create a speech. These are invaluable to help people improve overall, because a person never stops learning.

Having the ability to capture your target audience begins with a conversation that has meaning. Woods Cares is a Free Service

Woods Cares is a group of AARP volunteers helping individuals in Lake of the Woods who are shut-ins, caregivers of shut-ins or those who are in need for some other reason. We have been serving our community members for over 14 years. There are approximately 30 AARP members who have volunteered their time or talents. These individuals are all over the age of 50, and most of them are LOW residents in their 60’s, 70’s and 80’s who continue to be of service to their neighbors.

Services provided in the past have consisted of transporting people to doctor appointments, grocery shopping, beauty appointments, picking up prescriptions or running other errands. Other helpful tasks have included: simple plumbing repairs, small appliance repair, raking leaves, picking up mail and transporting trash to the compactor. We have also visited with shutins to give their caregivers a break. This list represents a sample of what you may need us to do. Remember, this is a free service.

A popular novel, currently enjoying a long run on bestseller lists, is the LOW Book Club’s choice for discussion at its August 14 meeting. Where the Crawdads Sing, by nature writer Delia Owens, is the story of Kya Clark, who was abandoned by her desperate and dysfunctional family at the age of six. In this, her first fiction work, the author uses the marshland of the North Carolina coast as background and an integral component of the story of the “Marsh Girl.” Kya’s coming of age, self-training as a naturalist, and possible involvement in a murder are the major developing and recurring themes of the narrative. The book concludes with a thought provoking and perhaps revealing discovery.

The book is available in all three local library systems (Orange County, Culpeper County and Central Rappahannock Regional).

LOW Book Club meets at 1 PM on the second Wednesday of the month in the meeting room of the Wilderness Library. All are welcome, and no prior notification or attendance commitment is necessary. The selection for the September 11 meeting is The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton.

One of the major functions of government is the safety and security of its citizens. At the federal level, it is accomplished by the military, FBI and numerous other agencies. At the state level, it is the National Guard and state police. At the local level in Orange County, it is the Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Fire & Rescue. In the case of fire and rescue service, the county staff is substantially augmented by volunteers. Although there are some county staff providing fire protection, the majority of personnel are volunteers in the five volunteer fire companies in the county, one of which is located in LOW. The county provides four rescue ambulances for 24/7 service throughout the county, one of which is located at LOW. LOW also has a second ambulance, providing extra protection, staffed by volunteers for some shifts during the week. I describe this dual county and volunteer arrangement because the LOW Fire & Rescue Company is an important part of the protection and well-being of LOW residents. The county cannot provide these services to the level we expect without raising significantly more revenue (taxes). To provide these services, the LOW F&R Company needs volunteers and funding. Some funding is provided by the county, but all volunteer companies in the county have to raise some funds. In the next month or so, the LOW Fire & Rescue Company will be requesting contributions. Your financial support goes directly to ensuring that these essential services to you will continue. Even with adequate funding, it takes volunteers to make things happen. Both fire and rescue volunteers are needed and training is provided. This is a great way to serve others and develop self-confidence in handling emergencies.

The county recently entered into a contract for operation of the landfill, which led me to give the taxpayers a better idea of what waste collection and disposal costs. The cost for this contract is $77 thousand a month, plus the cost of leachate removal which can run from $7 thousand to $28 thousand per month.

This is just landfill cost, and does not include the cost of operating the waste collection sites in the county, the cost of transporting waste from the collection sites to the landfill or the contract for removal of recyclables. Overall, the cost of dealing with waste collection and disposal is about $2.6 million per year or, in terms of the real estate tax, about $200 for a $300 thousand dollar home.

The Commonwealth of Virginia is implementing a voluntary Long-Term Care Insurance Program. This program offers a variety of benefit plans including benefit levels, time limits on benefits and inflation options. The Supervisors recently authorized the execution of an agreement that allows Orange County employees to participate in this program.

Loretta Yurkus, Janice Mincey, and Karen Cakouros, our Tuesday Tournament Chairs, do a great job managing the group each week. It is not an easy task dealing with last minute cancellations and other complications that come up. Let them know their efforts are appreciated.

The President’s Cup Tournament starts on Tuesday July 30, and continues for the next two Tuesdays: August 6 and August 13. This is an individual stroke play event. Your best two scores of the three rounds will be combined to determine your tournament score. Players compete within their flight. If you are unable to play on one of the days, you can still compete.

There will also be a regular Tuesday game each week. If you choose to participate in the President’s Cup, pay an extra $2 entry fee when you sign in on your first day. You will need to sign up each week as usual.

The Ladies’ Club Championship is scheduled for Saturday, August 17, and Sunday, August 18. This event is opened to all LOW ladies. The sign-up sheet will be posted in the pro shop.

The Jefferson League will have their next home match on Monday, August 19. Players will be notified by Louise Hoh and Phyllis Sakole in advance via email.

Our annual Member/ Member Tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, August 27. It’s time to line up your partner for this fun event. There will be a social for participants at 3 PM on Monday, August 26. Look for the sign-up sheet and for details posted in the ladies’ lounge at the Woods Center.

Dottie Lohr will collect non-perishable food items for the food bank, as usual, on the first Tuesday of the month, August 6. Look for Dottie’s car, with the trunk open, to deposit your donations.

Remember, the start time for August is 8 AM with sign in by 7:30.
