At our last Board meeting on a cold Saturday morning, the parking lot was full. It wasn’t to attend the meeting, but to watch the kids’ soccer games. Temperatures were not much above freezing, but enthusiasm was high. Parents were bundled up on the sidelines. The young people that can play sports outside in shorts can also stand at the bus stop without wearing a coat in wintry weather. I get cold just thinking about it. Calling for volunteers: Our annual Committee Fair will take place this Saturday, Nov. 20, from 1 PM to 4 PM in the Clubhouse. The Board of Directors relies on Committees to help form policy. We have 25 committees that are the research and development, arms and legs, subject matter experts, and “heavy lifters” of Lake of the Woods. Come and meet with members of the committees and learn more about what they do. Here is your chance to get involved in one of our committees that matches your area of expertise or interest. Now that clocks have fallen back, it gets dark early. Dogs must still be walked, mail picked up, and people still need a little exercise after work walking outside. Please drive carefully. This is a season of reflection on the things for which we are grateful. I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

LOWA Board of Director Goals 2021-2022 1. Maintaining Financial Stability Explore financial options toward 2022-2023 Budget decisions that enable LOWA to sustain itself through COVID-19 by offsetting possible amenity and administrative income loss. Consider (1) deferral of new capital projects, (2) use of New Construction & Replacement (NCR) Reserves income toward Repair and Replacement Reserve and New Asset and Improvement expenses and (3) use of other prudent financial decisions that (A) promote financial stability (B) preserve Association assets (C) avoid an assessment increase of no more than six percent and (D) avoid deferred maintenance. Manage the FY 2021-2022 and FY 2022-2023 budgets as complementary to optimize operating cash. (Overarching Goal 7) 2. Lakes and Stormwater Management Plan Implementation Develop a priority list of projects for the next five years based on the Fall 2021 A. Morton Thomas and Associates Lakes and Storm Water Management Plan Study. Review the study at a working group level, then Board level, and determine action steps regarding the following: 1) whether increased staff may be necessary to meet desired levels of leaf removal and ditch repair 2) addressing water runoff from fairways through capital projects and 3) establishing metrics to measure the effectiveness of lakes and stormwater management projects. Complete design, bid, and award the Patrick Henry Court to Small Marina Drainage Improvement Project by Spring/Summer 2022. Begin construction by Summer 2022, if advantageous. (Overarching Goals 1, 2)

3. Automation of Amenity Payments Continue efforts to automate payments, including memberships, amenity fees, guest passes and all applicable liability waivers. Define objectives for users and administrators for A) guest waiver and pay at remote location B) electronic signature and C) reduce paper. Explore online single amenity membership registration form with waiver. Begin with paperless early boat registrations (Spring 2022) and pay-on-site with pickleball/tennis and pools (Summer 2022). (Overarching Goal 6)

4. Main Gate/Third Gate Pursue resolution to Main Gate inbound congestion as a first step in addressing community traffic issues. Use a working group and retain an engineer to develop Main Gate strategies and report to the Board by AprilMay 2022. Review the 2016 Welford Study. Afterward, use working group and engineer to develop strategies for a long-term solution, including building a Third Gate. Provide progress report to Board by August 2022. (Overarching Goals 1, 2, 4) 5. Roadway Infrastructure Consider a strategic plan to convert chip and tar to asphalt paving. Thanksgiving at LOW for Everyday Good Deeds

by Phil Rodenberg, General Manager, ®CMCA, ® AMS, ® PCAM Happy Thanksgiving, LOW! The big question this week is: who is a blessing in your life for whom you are thankful? I try to live by the creed: “Be a thankful person.” I hope you do too. I am thankful for the employees and volunteers that help keep LOWA one of the best large-scale communities in Virginia. I have the privilege of working with many dedicated individuals on the LOWA staff. I’m thankful for all the big and little things that these men and women do -- the everyday good deeds that keep LOW moving forward. • Good deeds such as the Fareways Cafe server who recently performed the Heimlich maneuver to save a member in distress. (See Viewpoints on Page 14.) •

Big things such as maintenance staff inspecting the dams during severe weather, dredging sediment from lake coves, and plowing roads and parking lots during snow season.

•

Helpful acts such as the Roads crew heavy truck driver coming in on a Sunday to push up the leaf and branch pile to keep the 9.9 Maintenance Area organized.

•

Timely actions such as the Security officer performing a welfare check at the home of a senior who doesn’t answer the phone when an out-of-town relative calls.

•

Little things such as the riding instructor teaching horsemanship to a Member’s grandchild.

3. Member Comments on Business Agenda and General Member Comments: None. 4. PRESENTATION: Planning Committee List of New Asset and Improvement Reserve Projects for the Five-year Capital Plan. Planning Committee Chair Jim Zavrel summarized the steps taken by the Committee to review and rate proposed projects for inclusion in the 2022-2026 Five-year Capital Plan. The Committee also held a Town Hall meeting to get member input, and aligned each project with the Board’s adopted Overarching Goals and Strategies and the draft Board Goals for 2021-22 board term, as closely as possible. A chart was submitted to the Board summarizing the Committee’s recommendations and rationale for approval, conditional approval, deferral or denial of specific projects. The Board will consider the Planning Committee’s recommendations in preparing the FY2022-23 budget.

And don’t forget our volunteer leaders on the Board of Directors and Committees that give up their time and talents to make decisions and give advice on topics from lake health to lap swimming, budgets to burgers, and planning to pickleball courts. When you add up all these everyday good deeds, you and I really have quite a lot for which to be thankful here at LOW. Thank you also to our LOW members who stay current on their assessments and give us helpful feedback on the operation of your community. I hope your Thanksgiving is equally as blessed. Security will be implementing congestion control measures that day to help keep check-in as smooth as possible.

What “De-bundling” Our Cable Bill Means

Lately there seems to be some misunderstanding about the Environmental Control Committee, so we thought the Lake Currents would be a good place to clarify a few things. The ECC is the only committee chartered by the covenants of Lake of the Woods. Our primary purpose is to “approve or disapprove in writing, before any work Is commenced, all plans and specifications for any structure or improvement to be erected or moved upon any residential lot.” What does that mean? Let me give you examples - and these are not all-inclusive. Any new construction, whether a new home, an addition, a deck, retaining walls, patio, docks, sheds, or firepit, must be evaluated to see if the plans adhere to the regulations of the Association. Before the exterior of any home is painted a different color, or a tree over six inches is cut down, it must be approved. If you’re not sure - no problem - just call the ECC office and ask, 540-972-2211. Whenever a property owner wants to make a change to their property’s exterior, they fill out paperwork and a member of the committee goes to the site and completes an evaluation. De-bundling is a new word that cable companies don’t want you to know. It’s the word the industry uses when you break your cable bill apart and move some of those charges elsewhere. When looking at each part, people are realizing that they could save money or get better enjoyment by not buying everything from one place. However, you realize that the one thing you can’t realistically stop paying for is internet service. Consider these parts. Internet Service: This is the backbone that all your “internet of things” need. You need it and must pay it, unless you have a friendly neighbor helping you out. Television: Modern TV programming does not come from big TV networks anymore. Disney+, Hulu, YouTube TV, HBOmax, Paramount+, and many more can be viewed on your TV or on other devices such as a laptop or tablet. You can take it with you outside the home. Many streaming sources also sell local air TV channels too. Many new shows or your favorite sports team may not be on the local cable. There are so many new choices now if you do not limit yourself to the old set top box. Wi-Fi Hardware: You can pay the cable company to rent a Wi-Fi access point. But you can also buy them, and they don’t cost you every month. Many modem/Wi-Fi Router combo prices are under $100. Home Phone: Most people have ditched their old telephone line. Cell phones eliminated this need. If you still want a home phone, you can get VOIP (Voice over Internet) for as low as $60 per year. Everything else the cable company pitches: You can get that from other sources, or not buy it. The bottom line is that you must buy internet to make most everything else work. When our current monopoly internet supplier slows down and has high prices, we need to build a fiber to the home system to make it right. Solos December Schedule

Our official LGA Season has come to an end. We held our Fall Awards Luncheon on Friday, Oct. 29. Special thanks to Dawn Lofdahl and Sue Flores for doing an outstanding job on organizing the Fall Awards Luncheon. Our new Officers for the 2021-2022 are: Karen Woods, President; Lori Barnes, lst Vice President; Kitty MacFadden, 2nd Vice President; Karen Cakouros, Secretary; Gail McCarthy, Treasurer; Phyllis Sakole and Pat Shrader, 18-Hole Tournament Chairs; Mary Jane Atwater and Judy Ludgivsen, 9-Hole Tournament Chairs; Sharon Carmicael and Denise Reese, Nominating Committee. Special thanks to Dottie Lohr who coordinated the donations and food for the Wilderness Food Pantry this year. She reported that the LGA has generously given $5,365.00 in addition to a numerous amount of food items for the Wilderness Food Pantry from Nov. 1, 2020, to Nov. 1, 2021. Food donations can be placed in the LGA Closet. Match Play Winners this year were Heidi Brown in the 18-Hole Ladies Group, and Diane Ressa in the 9-Hole Ladies Group. With the holidays upon us, you may need a break to relax and enjoy a meal with pleasant conversation. Our club meets on Wednesdays for brunch or dinner. The next LOW Arts meeting will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 2 PM in the Community Center Game Room. During our business meeting, we will be electing new officers for the coming year and formulating the 2022 calendar of events. Our “artist in the spotlight” will be Deanne Lawrence. If you visited our September art show you probably saw Deanne’s unique stone houses and miniatures, perfect for your fairy (or troll) garden. Deanne will be showing us her technique for creating these outdoor-friendly works of art. New members and visitors are always welcome to attend our meetings. Our Online Holiday Shop is now open for the season through Dec. 10, at www. lakeofthewoodsart.com. Browse our galleries and pick up one-of-a-kind gifts for friends and family on your holiday shopping list. Our artists will deliver your purchases right to your front door. Among the artists featured for the first time in our Online Holiday Shop is Karen Weingartner. Karen and her husband recently moved to LOW from Phoenix to be closer to their family. Karen works in watercolor, acrylics, and alcohol inks. She started painting and showing her work about 10 years ago in shows and galleries around Phoenix. She ran a free arts program in Phoenix for three years and taught classes for various groups, including veterans, at-risk youth, and survivors of suicide. For the last three years before her move, she was a member of the Board of Directors of the Arizona Artist Guild. Karen doesn’t shy from the bold use of color in her paintings, as evidenced by the whimsical menagerie of floral animals and stunning abstracts, available in our holiday shop. We all naturally want to help wildlife, especially during the harsh winter weather. It is, however, not a good idea to feed them, according to the experts. Here’s why: 1–Serious health problems, like malnutrition, can occur when you don’t feed wild animals the specialized diet they require. Foods like bread, crackers, or french fries are especially problematic as they provide no nutritional value. 2–Providing food for wildlife causes dependence. Wildlife can also lose their natural fear of humans and can become a nuisance or even a safety risk. 3–Providing food may change the range of wild animals or the natural timing of movement and migration. 4–Feeding in neighborhoods can create a danger for animals and humans when inadvertent encounters between animals & vehicles occur. 5–Wildlife feeding can create competition for food, resulting in fighting and injury. It can also create crowded situations where diseases can be more easily spread (sometimes even to pets & humans). 6–And finally, IT IS ILLEGAL to feed deer or bear in our area. It is also “illegal to feed any wild animal when the feeding results in property damage, endangers people or wildlife, or creates a public health concern.” (Virginia DWR) While feeding wildlife is discouraged for all those reasons, we know many enjoy feeding backyard birds. Future articles will discuss how/when to do that, as well as how to create quality natural habitats that provide food & shelter for wildlife. Garden Club: Leaves

by Rose Javier, Committee Member Leaves offer great benefits to wildlife and your garden’s soil. Don’t throw them away! Allow them to do what nature intended: Protect and enrich the soil, offer food for ground-feeding birds, provide a nursery for butterfly larvae/pupae, cover for overwintering queen bumblebees and other beneficial insects and microbes, and afford animals like frogs and salamanders places to hunt and hide. Leaves are packed with trace minerals that trees draw up from deep in the soil, so in a wooded area leave them. When added to your garden, mulched leaves feed earthworms and beneficial microbes. They lighten heavy soils, help sandy soils retain moisture, and make an attractive mulch in the flower garden. Leaf litter breaks down with the help of mycorrhizal fungi that move carbon into soil, extract nutrients for plants, protect them from disease, and lessen soil erosion. Take raked leaves from the hardscape and place them in your planted beds, a couple of inches thick to protect the soil and provide insulation from the cold. Shredding leaves is another option, but try not to shred all the leaves before applying—it won’t help the wildlife. If you must have lawn, leave small amounts of leaves on it and mulch them in situ. Use your mower to shred leaves on grass to improve lawn health by naturally fertilizing the soil. Freshly fallen leaves are high in minerals, and don’t kill soil organisms like synthetic fertilizers do. So, do wildlife, trees, and your garden a favor and use this valuable resource nature gave us; the best part is, it’s free!

The Lake Youth Foundation will be taking reservations for this event as it has in past years, so each child can have their own special time with Santa. Parents and grandparents are free to take pictures of their children. Refreshments will be served, and each child will have the opportunity to make a Christmas ornament while waiting to see Santa. Lions Tree of Love

by Peter Williams, Lake of the Woods Lions Club In three weeks, on Saturday, Dec. 11, the Lions Club Tree of Love will be dedicated and lit at the Wilderness Center at the intersection of Routes 3 and 20, across the street from Sheetz and McDonalds. For those who have been meaning to donate to the Tree and have yet to do so, you still have time to make your donation to the Lake of the Woods Lions Club Foundation and have the names of those you wish to remember, or honor, printed in the commemorative program. The tree will remain lit in the hours of darkness until the first week in January. For years, the Tree of Love has played a meaningful part in the holiday celebrations in this part of the county. By the way, please don’t confuse it with the Lake of the Woods Association’s Christmas Tree lighting or the Living Water Community Clinic’s Tree of Life Gala, equally joyous happenings in the Lake of the Woods community! The lights with which the trees will be decorated (white for those who have passed away, red for those to be honored for kindnesses and services, and purple in honor of our veterans) cost just $5 each, but the Lions will welcome greater donations! The Foundation is a 501-C3 organization, and your donations may be tax-deductible. All proceeds will be shared among several needy families in Lake of the Woods and Orange County to help them enjoy the Christmas holiday. Please send your check payable to the Lake of the Woods Lions Foundation, P.O. Box 805, Locust Grove, VA 22508 with a list of those to be remembered and honored, indicating the appropriate color lights. Donations should be received by the Lions by Dec. 3 at the latest, please.

The last article gave the wrong ticket prices for The Players Christmas offering, We Need a Little Christmas, featuring our Show Stoppers singers, many of the same singers who were in the Players smash hit The Addams Family Musical. LOW Community

Lake of the Woods Adaptive Watersports Foundation wants to thank the community for its continued support of the events we put on for differently-abled veterans, adults, teens, and children. We had a wonderful year, welcoming back participants and their families to our beautiful lake. We were able to do most of our usual activities, except for only a few, due to safety precautions of covid. Those who came were extremely appreciative, not only to get out of their homes and out on the water, but to the Lake of the Woods community for welcoming them back. We thank General Manager Phil Rodenberg, the resident volunteers from LOW, LOW Security for keeping our water area safe, boaters who respected our event perimeter, Ryan Richardson, who is always helpful with last minute items we need, and Maintenance who keep our parks and shared spaces clean and enjoyable. We can tell you that 2021 was a great success for us, and we couldn’t do it without Lake of the Woods and all the wonderful people who live and work here.

5. REPORTS 5.1 Report from Orange County Board of Supervisors Supervisor Lee Frame reported that the Board will probably be adopting the newly-drawn voting districts at their November 17th meeting here at LOW. This is done every 10 years based on census data. Volunteers are needed to serve on four County Committees: Community Services Board, the Criminal Justice Board, the Orange County Youth Commission and the Social Services Advisory Board. Elections this past week resulted in all Supervisors being re-elected. 5.2 Report from Orange County Sheriff’s Office: None. 5.3 Report from Allied-Universal Security (AUS) Security Chief Scott Walker reported that his Security staff is now 100% vaccinated against Covid-19. The body camera testing period for SCOP officers is almost over. The LOWA Board will consider approving an amendment to the AUS contract allowing the use of body cameras by SCOP officers later on today’s agenda. Vandalism was reported at Hollyfield Park on October 31st, which is being investigated. Activity of note in October included one theft, 9 animal complaints, 15 noise complaints and 5 motor vehicle accidents. This puts LOWA in this category. Sixty-eight percent of our LOWA employees are already vaccinated. LOWA management will be discussing the need for changes to our vaccine policy to comply with the mandate. B. Lakes Management Report On October 25, Keaton’s lake received 90 gallons of algaecide to treat the blue-green algae bloom. A second treatment is planned next week. Residents have been advised of lake use restrictions until post-treatment water quality sampling deems it safe for human use. New higher-capacity dredging equipment has been received. Recent dredging has removed 344 cubic yards of sediment and debris from Keaton’s lake.

C. Other Business Four shade structures have been installed at the Clubhouse pool, including one at the Snackbar, and three were installed at Sweetbriar pool. Cost of the project was $24,426, which is considerably less than the $38k budgeted for the project. FLOW will be contributing $2,566 toward the Snackbar shade structure. Residents have been notified that REC will be clearing power line right-ofways throughout the community over the next several months. Details were published in the November 5 issue of Lake Currents. RFP’s have been issued for next year’s Pool Management, Golf Maintenance and Annual Financial Audit. Board action on proposals is scheduled for early in 2022. 5.8 Committee Report: External Affairs Committee Committee Secretary William Lukaczyk reported they are monitoring and researching several projects in the area, including the Redfish Solar Farm on Catharpin Road, the proposed Signature Station development just west of Walmart, Wilderness Crossing plans at the Intersection of Rtes 3 & 20, cost options for obtaining home fiber-optic cable, and third gate financing and design. Orange County school children are wearing masks with no major outbreaks of virus, although there is a shortage of bus drivers. The real estate market has been very strong with about a 10% sales price increase over the past year. 6. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 6.1 Consideration of Approving Amendments to LOWA Bylaws Article XVI: Amendments; and LOWA Regulations Section I.K: General, Regarding the Procedure for New and Amended Bylaws and Regulations. (Resolution 2021-26) (D-21-122) Motion by Wilks, passed unanimously, that the Board adopt Resolution 2021-26, a Policy Resolution, regarding the procedure for new and amended Bylaws and Regulations, effective immediately. 6.2 Discussion of Proposed Amendments to Regulation V: B.C. and K: Use of Individually-owned Property, Regarding Vehicles with Advertisements Parked on Private Lots. (D-21-123) Director Diercks suggested some added language to the current draft. Due to the number of small edits already suggested throughout the draft document, it was felt the Rules and ECC Committees should undertake a follow-up review. The LOW Veterans Club will hold its annual Christmas Dinner/Dance on Friday, Dec. 3, at the Clubhouse. The dinner service will start at 6:30 PM. Disc Jockey Dicky Estes will provide music. The Veterans Club has decided to invite, and provide free meals at the Christmas dinner to, all LOW World War II veteran residents and their guests. All LOW-resident World War II veterans are encouraged to contact Club President Michael Ferguson at 571-235-5313 or email at colmferguson@msn.com. All other veterans and active-duty members of any Armed Service and their guest are encouraged to attend. Business attire is suggested, and tuxedo/dress uniform is optional. Wearing of military medals or ribbons on lapels is encouraged. Reservations are now available for the Dec. 3 Christmas Party. The cost of the dinner is $25 per person. The menu consists of one of four choices which include: Lacy’s Chicken, Sea Bass, chopped sirloin with brown gravy, and eggplant Parmesan. Included as part of the Christmas dinner will be a vegetable medley, baby baked potatoes, garden salad, and chocolate cake. We will be selling Christmas and yard sale items, Cause 4 Paws t-shirts, items decorated with cat pictures e.g., socks, pens, and even spoons, books on cats, pierced earrings, bracelets, and necklaces with animals, fantasy, travel, and food themes. You can also purchase tickets for our 2021 raffle drawing; the grand Photo provided prize of which is a double size Cat Quilt made and donated by Carolyn Bohling displays her quilt, the grand prize in the Cause 4 Carolyn Bohling, a member of the Fredericksburg Modern Quilt Paws raffle. Guild. The quilt is made up of various colors of cats. Many other prizes donated by local businesses will be awarded. Raffle ticket prices are: $2 for one ticket, $5 for three tickets and $10 for eight tickets. The raffle drawing will be held on Thursday, Dec. 9, in the Trophy Room at Fareways beginning at 1 PM. For its Dec. 8 meeting, the LOW Book Club will discuss selections from the many Christmas story collections available in all three local library systems. Among collections containing the most varied and diverse tales are A Vintage Christmas: A Collection of Classic Stories and Poems; The Family Read-Aloud Christmas Treasury, compiled by Alice Low; and Christmas in My Heart: A Timeless Treasury of Heart-Warning Stories, compiled and edited by Joe Wheeler. The stories take place from the 1800s to modern day. Christmas would not be complete without Charles Dickens, and The Oxford Illustrated Dickens Christmas Stories entertains with sentimental and thought-provoking episodes, and without one mention of Scrooge and Tiny Tim. For mystery lovers, tales from the darker side of the season are told in Christmas at the Mysterious Bookshop: ‘Tis the Season to Be Deadly, edited by Otto Penzler; The Mistletoe Murders and Other Stories, by P. D. James; and The Big Book of Christmas Mysteries, also edited by Otto Penzler. These vintage stories from classic crime writers explore another side of the supposed season of good will. The Supervisors recently modified the Orange County Zoning Ordinance regarding accessory dwellings on the same lot as a single-family dwelling. A national trend to permit such accessory dwellings has evolved to deal with the limited availability and costly expense of housing. The county ordinance previously permitted such dwellings, but limited the size to one 800 square foot dwelling per lot. The modification removed the size limitation but still allows only one accessory dwelling per lot. The ordinance is permissive in allowing accessory dwellings, but does not require them. Land use restrictions such as Lake of the Woods covenants would still have to be adhered to. There is an opening on the Board of Directors of the RappahannockRapidan Community Services (RRCS) organization. The mission of RRCS is to improve the quality of life in Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock Counties by providing comprehensive behavioral health, developmental disability, substance use disorder, and aging services. RRCS strives to accomplish its mission by offering a comprehensive array of services in our local communities. The board meets once a month on the second Tuesday at 1 PM in Culpeper. The RRCS has a website that provides information about the organization and duties of board members. If you are interested, please contact me at the email address below. Another board vacancy is on the Thomas Jefferson Area Community Criminal Justice Board (CCJB): The Board’s mission is to enable participating localities to work together to develop community-based pretrial court services and post-conviction alternatives to incarceration for misdemeanants and certain nonviolent felons. The participating localities include Charlottesville, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Goochland, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange, and Nelson County. The board convenes quarterly to discuss trends in crime and incarceration, and to consider proven alternatives to incarceration that enhance long-term public safety goals. The CCJB has a website where you can learn more about specific activities and board participation. If you would be interested in serving on this board, please let me know at the email address below. The Orange County Youth Commission was established by the Board of Supervisors to act in an advisory capacity to the Orange County Office on Youth. The purpose of the Orange County Youth Commission is to foster wholesome youth development and the prevention of juvenile delinquency. The commission makes recommendations for policy and procedure for the Office on Youth consistent with this purpose, including overseeing the goals and objectives for the Office on Youth. A representative from each of the five voting districts serves on this commission. Currently the District 5 seat is open. Members are appointed for four-year terms by the Board of Supervisors. Regular meetings of the Youth Commission take place on the third Tuesday of the odd-numbered months, beginning at 7 PM in the Town of Orange. The Orange County website has more information on this commission. If you would like to impact youth programs in the county, please consider serving. You can contact me at the email address below. The Virginia Standards of Learning are updated every seven years by the Virginia Board of Education. The Virginia Department of Education has appointed the Virginia Mathematics Pathways Initiative to recommend changes that will be made in the Mathematics Standards of Learning. If approved by the Virginia Board of Education, the changes will be implemented in the 2025-2026 school year. The Virginia Department of Education’s website states: “The Virginia Mathematics Pathways Initiative has its origin in a groundbreaking 2018 study from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics: Catalyzing Change in High School Mathematics.” In this “groundbreaking” study, one of the key recommendations is to “create equitable structures in mathematics.” That does not sound ominous until one discovers “structures” means classes and “equitable” means eliminating all ability grouping math classes. The study refers to ability grouping classes as “spaces of marginality and privilege.” This “groundbreaking” study is why the Virginia Mathematics Pathways Initiative proposes removing Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 from the Virginia Standards of Learning. The state cannot stop local school boards from offering these courses, but if students cannot receive a verified credit, the students may be reluctant to enroll. Based on the school board’s equal educational opportunities policy, no one by virtue of their race or skin color should be viewed as inherently privileged. Equity means all students should have equal opportunities to participate in ability grouping math classes according to their ability and achievement. Removing Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 from the Standards of Learning will reduce the educational opportunities for all students. If there is an equity concern in ability grouping mathematic classes, reducing the educational opportunities to make everyone equal is not the proper solution. This “groundbreaking” study from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics fixes nothing except to line the pockets of college professors, consultants, and political activists who are pushing these proposed changes on Virginia’s K-12 school system. In my opinion, the Virginia Board of Education should reject the Virginia Mathematics Pathways Initiative to ensure a mathematics curriculum that permits all students to achieve their full potential.
