LOW Garden Club: Winter Wonderland

by Karen Kovarik, Publicity Chairman and Rose Javier, Member The Garden Club transformed the Clubhouse and grounds to a Winter Wonderland well before the arrival of winter. The Clubhouse Decorating Committee, chaired by Jan Davis, Mary Sims and Shellee Williams, worked in shifts so that we could have social distancing for our members. With an abundance of imagination, silver spray paint, flocking and dedication, our members created a Winter Wonderland for your enjoyment. We want to offer a special thanks to LOW Facilities for their assistance over the past months. By Saturday, Dec. 5, the generosity of Lake of the Woods residents had added a touch of Santa’s Workshop to the décor. The Photo Provided lobby overflowed with gifts for the Christmas Toy Drive. Helping to spread the festive look around the community, members of the Garden Club will judge the Home Holiday Decorating Contest, with the results published in Lake Currents. While COVID has forced the Garden Club to cancel its traditional Winter Tea, it should not stop us from celebrating the arrival of winter. When we welcome the winter solstice on Dec. 21, the days will start getting longer! By February, when we hope – with the help of a vaccine – to resume regular meetings, our days should be at least 90 minutes longer. A closing note about our friends the trees: Trees provide value. Life could not exist on Earth without trees. Trees produce most of the oxygen that we breathe, absorb carbon dioxide, reduce the amount of storm water runoff, reduce erosion and pollution in our waterways, reduce the effects of flooding, and provide food and shelter to wildlife. In addition, mature trees increase property values by 1020%. When assessing the health or safety of a tree, hire a certified arborist who is knowledgeable in the science of tree care. Stay away from tree service companies recommending topping, limbing up a tree, or climbing a tree with spikes, practices compromising the health of a tree. Wrapping Up the 2020 Toy Drive

by Claudia Low, LOW Lioness Lions Orange County Children’s Toy Box Chair, and Ryan Richardson, LOWA Clubhouse Manager The Lake of the Woods Lioness Lions and Lake of the Woods Clubhouse Manager Ryan Richardson would like to thank our community members and those outside the lake for their generous donations to the Orange County Children’s Toy Box. The donations, toys, and cash have been overwhelming and generous. We would also like to thank the following locations, their volunteers, and staff for allowing us to place a decorated collection box at each setting: Photo by Ryan Richardson • LOW Clubhouse Toys donated to the Lions Toy Drive • LOW Fareways Café for the Orange County Children’s Toy • LOW Lioness Lions Dinner Box overflow the donation box. Meeting at Sweetbriar Pavilion, November • LOW Lioness Lions Book Sales, October and November • LOW Lions Saturday Flea Markets, two weeks • The Licata Group, Pat Licata and staff • Coldwell Banker Elite, Kathy Merritt and staff We hope you have had an opportunity to go to the Clubhouse to look at the donations. Once you enter the front doors of the Clubhouse you will be walking into a magical wonderland of toys. Ryan and staff have done an amazing job of placing all the toys in the decorated boxes, under the holiday trees, on the tables, and up and down the hallways. Great job, Ryan and staff; looks great! All toys were picked up by the Orange County Children’s Toy Box committee on Tuesday, Dec. 8. No matter how you celebrate the holidays, please remember that your generosity has enabled so many children in Orange County to have a wonderful day. We should all be very proud of how we have helped with the toy drive. May your holidays be safe, and remember those that have helped us through these trying times. Thank you all. We live in a very caring, generous community.
