LOW Fire & Rescue Santa Visit

Santa will be visiting our neighborhood atop Engine 29 from the LOW Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company on Dec. 21, 22 and 23. Since this is a large vehicle to maneuver, Santa will be staying on the main roads, no cul-de- sacs. A brush truck, one block ahead, will lead the procession. This will allow residents to safely make it to their door to see Santa. Additionally, you may follow Santa’s progress on the GPS located on the LOW Fire and Rescue webpage, lowfr29.com.

This schedule is tentative and may change, based on weather or calls for service;  Friday, Dec. 21, starting about 5 PM, the procession will be from the Front Gate to Confederate Circle on the marina side of the Lake; then to the Sheetz, Food Lion and Walmart parking lots.  Saturday, Dec. 22, starting about 5 PM from Confederate Drive to the Front Gate on the golf course side; then to the Sheetz, Food Lion and Walmart parking lots.  Sunday, Dec. 23, one trip around Lakeview Pkwy, then to Rapidan Drive, Wilderness Shores and Somerset subdivisions, then to the Sheetz, Food Lion and Walmart parking lots.

Each night, Santa will make at least one trip around Lakeview Pkwy, whether early in the trip or late in the evening.

Fellow Members: As we approach the holidays, we should all be thankful for the many blessings given to us. We live in an excellent community with amenities to provide enjoyment to any of us in some way, be it use of the lakes, pools, community center activities, or participating in and with clubs and service organizations. On Nov. 30, and for my first time, I presided over the Christmas tree lighting at the Clubhouse. It was a great experience; there were many children present to see Santa, and the garden club had done a great job preparing the area and decorating the clubhouse. The choir added a festive air to the occasion and it was a positive event. On Dec. 2, the Clubhouse Committee and your Board of Directors welcomed attendees to the Association holiday party at the Clubhouse. Many of the attendees expressed their support for the Board.

I received not one negative comment as folks filed into the event. This was a positive reminder that the number of negative voices in this community is small, however vocal and vitriolic they sometimes become.

On Dec. 4, 5, and 6, I attended, along with other Board members, the Joint Finance/Planning Committees meeting on the proposed budget. I heard many interesting and positive ideas about the proposed budget which the General Manager and the Board will consider before approval of the budget in February 2019.

We had a Special Meeting of the Board on Dec. 12 to allow Members to question Christopher Haney about his report of findings of the forensic audit.

There is more work for us to do regarding internal control procedures, but we have made progress on that matter also. We are looking to form a committee to help with internal controls.

To those of us who reside full time in the Lake, we survived a significant snow storm on Dec. 9. Fortunately our roads and maintenance crews kept our main roads clear.

Again, enjoy the holiday season as we get closer to the end of this year and beginning of the next.

‘Tis the Season! It was nice seeing so many familiar faces at the Dec. 2 Annual Holiday Party at the Clubhouse. Each year, a cross section of our community gathers for delicious food and good cheer. We estimate between 550 and 600 folks participated! If you haven’t seen the Christmas decorations at the Clubhouse, please stop by for a holiday meal and beverage, or just take a walk through the Presidents’ Room, Great Hall, and other rooms. It’s your Clubhouse!

Thanks to the Garden Club for another terrific job of decorating the inside and outside of the Clubhouse, and to other volunteers who decorated the Woods Center and Community Center. Thanks also to the Maintenance Department for decorating our Front Gate, Security Gatehouse and Holcomb Building to add a warm welcome to our members and guests. Speaking of guests…

Don’t forget the Front Gate gets extremely busy this time of year with visitor arrivals and security screening. Peak time on Christmas Day is 10 AM to 2 PM. Security expects higher than normal traffic on Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1. Please plan ahead to help ensure a smooth entry into the community for your guests.  Register your guests days ahead of time using the dwellingLive visitor management system rather than calling Security. Fareways Cafe at the Woods Center recently surveyed its patrons, and has added a few new items, including the Mushroom Swiss Burger, waffles, and Paninis. Stop by over the holidays for a meal! Cruise through the Pro Shop for some last minute shopping for LOWA logo items such as hats, sweatshirts, and golf balls. We still have Christmas ornaments available.

Fareways will be open later in the evenings, until 9 PM (except Sundays) from Wednesday, Jan. 2 through Tuesday, Jan. 15 during the annual Clubhouse shutdown.

Need to get out and get some fresh air during the holidays? Come to Sweetbriar Park for a brisk walk around the half-mile fitness trail with 13 exercise stations. Each station has a sign posted with different fitness level instructions from easy to moderate. Bring your basketball to shoot hoops at the newly constructed half-court basketball court and hoop between the playground and pavilion. Neighborhood kids started playing 10 minutes after the contractor finished installing the hoop and net!

Welcome the New Year With the Women’s Guild

Warm up your winter by coming to Women’s Guild at Lake of the Woods Church. You’ll be glad you did.

Women’s Guild meets regularly on the first and third Thursday of every month from 10 AM to noon in the church Friendship Hall. Each meeting consists of a short devotion, prayer, and a featured speaker, followed by a simple meal and time for fellowship. The meetings are always interesting, fun, and spiritually rewarding. In addition, the group participates in a service project each month to benefit the wider community.

Here’s what’s coming up: • Jan. 3 - Melissa Daly will speak about her recent trip to Israel and its impact on her life. Soloist Michaela Paxton will provide special music. • Jan. 17 - speaker Don Fisher will talk about the road from addiction to recovery. • January’s service project will benefit the Thurman Brisben Center for the homeless.

All women are welcome, regardless of church affiliation. Registration is not necessary, and there is no cost to attend. However, if you need childcare, please contact the church at 540-972-9060, by the Monday preceding the Guild meeting. Hope to see you soon!

Amore II, the Lioness Lions Club’s second annual Valentine dinner dance, will take place on Feb. 9, 2019 at the Clubhouse. The festive evening will begin with a cocktail hour at 6 PM followed by dinner at 7 PM. After dinner, the Reunion Band will play from 8 to 11 PM for your dancing and listening enjoyment. Dress is semi-formal, and a photographer will be on hand to capture attendees in all their finery.

There will be a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle to raise money for the Lioness Benevolence Fund, which supports local causes including Wilderness Food Pantry, Orange County Animal Shelter, Living Waters Free Health Clinic, Piedmont Dental Clinic, LOW Fire and Rescue, SAFE House, and scholarships to local students, as well as the Lions Hearing Foundation, Sight Foundation, LOVF Disaster Relief, and others. A retired couple was contacted by a company from another state, letting them know they were entitled to an inheritance from a relative who had passed away a few years ago. I had been contacted by the company to notarize a document for them. That is how we were connected. The urgency of the request and the strange documentation they needed definitely put me on guard, but I accepted the assignment.

Moments after arriving, the client said to me, “I hope this is not a scam.”

Because this had already crossed my mind, I asked if she had researched the company, and she said she had not. I asked her how she was coming into the funds and she said told me a story that sounded legitimate.

When I left, I had an uneasy feeling. I called a police commander friend and told him the story. He immediately said he thought it was a scam, but he would check out the company. Gut instinct and a few follow up calls later; yes, it was an inheritance scam.

Fortunately, I had not sent in the notary papers. This couple could have been victims of something preventable, but that many do not recognize as a scam because it sounds legitimate.

World War II Veterans Honored at LOWVETS Christmas Party

The LOW Veterans Club held its Christmas Party Dec. 7 at the Clubhouse and honored all veterans in attendance. World War II veterans were guests of the Club and were provided special recognition as well as free meals. That was also true for their spouses and caregivers.

World War II veterans honored included: Luis Amador (Coast Guard), James Cantrell (Navy), Link Landis (Army), Frank Liberti (Navy), William Phillips (Army), Alex Salustri (Army), and Ossie Schmidt (Army).

Additionally, the Veterans Club Christmas Dinner featured a Club-provided Christmas tree decorated with American flags; service-identified Christmas bulbs, and pictures of uniformed veterans. A special thanks to Nancy King and the LOW Garden Club for their efforts in decorating the Club House.

The LOW Veterans Club wishes a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all residents of Lake of the Woods. Also, each of us wishes everybody a Happy New Year.

As the old saying goes – All good things must come to an end. This is true also for Wine Talk. It is time for “yours truly” to say goodbye and move on to other things.

I have told so many people, in printed form and vocally, that we are now in the golden age of wine. So many countries, including Mexico, are making high quality wines. My mantra has always been “expand your wine knowledge.” Even though you may only drink Chardonnay, for example, there are many, many other grape varietals that can be enjoyed as much as or more. Please keep that in mind when you go to your favorite wine store and talk to their wine staff. They are there to assist you beyond your current wine knowledge.

It has been a real pleasure to provide wine information to my readers.

Wine is, and continues to be, part of my life. But, instead of writing about it and drinking it, I will focus on the drinking part from this point forward!

The Orange County Library System has three separate locations in the Towns of Orange and Gordonsville and at the Wilderness location just outside of Lake of the Woods.

To give you a sense of how well the libraries are used, during the 2018 Fiscal Year, (July 2017 to June 2018) the library system had 164,703 visitors checking out 325,851 items; 46,253 specific requests were filled. There were 39,500 Wi-Fi users, 17,457 computer users and 18,120 digital downloads.

There were 218 programs offered with 4,540 attendees. The meeting rooms were used by individuals or groups 951 times. These activities were supported by 709 volunteer hours.

In addition to the statistics above, the library system installed film and print scanners for public use. Customers can scan 35 mm film and paper documents such as photo, family bible entries official documents and more.

They also installed 24 device-friendly seats with access to power and Wi-Fi. Keeping the library collections up to date is a challenge. State funding is not sufficient to maintain the currency of materials up to the standards expected by county users. Orange County funds have been used to update non-fiction collections for youth and adults. The age of the 2018 Wilderness Library collection is as follows: 0-5 years: 18 percent, 6-10 years: 20 percent, 11-15 years: 23 percent, 16-20 years: 18 percent, 21+ years: 20 percent. These numbers are based on original copyright dates so some older classics may have been purchased more recently.

Another exciting aspect of our library is the many on-line offerings available through the E-Branch link on the library’s web site. Books, courses, magazines, TV programs and many other offerings are available. You can reach the library website through the county’s website. All of the libraries have been upgraded recently so if you haven’t visited a library recently, I recommend that you visit the library or its web site and see what is available.

At a recent Supervisor meeting, the Orange County Parks and Recreation Department received two awards from the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society. The Society’s state wide award program honors individuals, departments and organizations throughout Virginia who have demonstrated excellence during the previous year. Of the fourteen categories and 114 applications, our county won the award for the Most Innovating Marketing Piece and for the Snapshot Moment.
