Canada, she went to high school in Portugal—her parents’ home country. After a few years, she returned to North America to attend the University of Waterloo in Ontario and eventually landed in the Lake Norman area. “My husband's family,” she explains, “is originally from California but had been living in Cornelius and Hilton Head for over 25 years. With our three boys and fur-baby in tow, we made the move more than 10 years ago to be closer to our family, and we absolutely adore it here!”

Real estate has been in Marlene’s family for over 30 years.

Her father was a successful homebuilder in his day, and her sister owns her own real estate firm in Canada. This, coupled with her passion for helping others, led Marlene to her career in real estate. “I decided to go back to school and get my license,” she smiles, “and I have never looked back.”

My passion for education and building relationships with people fuels my desire to provide honest, knowledgeable, and transparent real estate (and moving) services to help people achieve their dreams. With my personal experience of relocating to a new state and country, I understand the challenges that come with the process. ALL IN THE FAMILY My father is my biggest inspiration. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 from Portugal with $20 in his pocket determined to make a better life for his family. He worked hard at learning English and working in the mines and labor jobs before sending for my mother and eldest sister. He eventually started working for a plumbing/ heating company and worked his way up to vice president of purchasing and eventually opened his own construction company. His tenacity, work ethic, and unwavering love for his family has always inspired me to pursue my dreams and to never give up.

PORTUGAL, PICKLEBALL, AND PLAYTIME Since my parents live in Portugal and we have a ton of family there, it’s one of our favorite destinations when we travel. In my dailies, I find exercise is a must for clarity of mind and overall health for body and soul. I especially enjoy pickleball and going to the gym. When it’s time to get a respite from the routine, nothing is better than sitting back with family and friends by the fire sipping wine. I am truly blessed and exceedingly grateful! w

“Hello, Parents!” From Melissa Forsyth

I welcome students, parents, and visitors to the campus, and I’ve become quite familiar with forgotten lunches, homework, and other essential items that require extra trips to the school by parents. As someone who sees firsthand the impact of forgotten items, I wanted to share some practical tips you might utilize to help your child develop valuable responsibility and organizational skills.

Establish a morning and evening routine to ensure your child gathers necessary items (backpack, lunch, homework, etc.).

Help your child create a checklist of items to bring to school each day. Setting alarms or putting sticky-notes on the door as reminders can be helpful, especially for out-of-the-ordinary things such as special projects or something stored in the fridge.

Encourage your child to problem-solve and come up with solutions that work for them to remember their items. A reward system for consistent responsibility can be effective, while consequences such as temporarily removing or delaying privileges or screen time can motivate students to be more organized.

Consequences should be geared towards teaching responsibility, not punishment. Acknowledge and praise your child's efforts to stay organized. Be patient; developing organizational skills takes time, but it’s a worthwhile life skill to cultivate.

on GETTING HERE: I grew up in Lincolnton, North Carolina, and attended high school there. I earned my undergraduate degree in chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill and then went on to graduate from East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. I am married to my amazing husband, Martin, and we have a beautiful beagle mix named Ellie who we completely spoil. on CHOOSING A CAREER: From a young age, I always knew that I wanted to go into the healthcare field. My grandma and I would play doctor often when I was a child. When I was around the age of 10, she became very ill with cancer and passed away not long after. A year later, I also lost my grandpa to cancer as well. This further cemented the healthcare field for me as a career—originally thinking I would be an oncologist due to my experience with my grandparents.

on FINDING THE RIGHT FIT: As I entered college, I became more interested in dentistry.

Growing up I had a good relationship with my family dentist and eventually got to shadow him and others.

It soon became evident that this was the path for me.

I loved the hands-on aspect and being able to help patients become healthier and happier. The fact that I could improve their oral health and help them gain confidence by fixing their smile was, and continues to be, extremely rewarding. on FAMILY THAT FORMS US: As mentioned previously, my grandmother was a big influence.

She spent a lot of time with me in my formative years reading to me, teaching me, playing games with me.

She also had children at a young age and during a time when most women were stay-at-home moms; however, she always worked. From a factory mill to an after-school daycare program, to a correctional facility and even a nurse, she did it all while taking care of her family. She was a successful working woman while also being fully present in her home life. My other inspiration is my husband. He is my biggest supporter and number one fan. He is such an optimistic and kind person and has truly helped me see the world through a better lens. on HARNESSING HAPPINESS: “Happiness is a mood, not a destination.” This quote resonates with me because like many people, I feel that we are always trying to get to the “next big thing” ... whether that’s pursuing academic degrees, getting married, having children, or going on that big vacation you saved up for. Founder of The Closet Niche in Mooresville, the journey thus far has brought her many blessings—but not without a lot of hard work and some steep challenges along the way.

As a busy mom, wife, businessowner, philanthropist, and friend to many, Annie’s world may spin fast, but her indominable spirit, unwavering faith, and genuine kindness inspire all who enter her orbit.

“I was raised that if you wanted anything in this world,” Annie shares, “you had to work hard for it yourself. Nobody was going to just hand it to you. I set goals and work hard to prove to myself I can do this and live the life that God has blessed me with—to continue to stay focused and humble on doing HIS will in every aspect of my life.”

Born in Winston Salem and raised in Mount Airy, North Carolina, Annie is married to husband Jon and together they share three children: Taylor (20), Jacob (19), and Colton (6). “My husband and I will celebrate 10 years of marriage this year. With our combined family, we like to say that together we have a ‘his, hers, and ours’ ... our kids are truly one of the biggest inspirations in my life. To pass along what was instilled in me and raise our kids to be hardworking, passionate adults is the greatest gift, and challenge, there is.”

Demonstrating the familyentrenched work ethic, it was her grandmother who got Annie her first job—sowing socks in a mill for the summer when she was just 14 years old. From waiting tables to being an executive assistant, flight attendant, door-to-door sales, website designer, and even event singing (she’s been singing since she was 4!), Annie’s vast experience, skills, and interests have become fortuitous on many levels.

“I returned to college,” she says, “at Southeastern College in Charlotte to earn my license as a professional clinical and neuromuscular massage therapist— which led me to open my first business, Carolina Club Spa, in 2009. In 2013, after a serious injury on my horse, massage therapy was not a career I could continue full-time, and I ended up back in corporate America trying to find my way. I just felt like I had never quite discovered my niche, as it were, and was feeling a bit lost.”

That was all about to change. A family friend reached out about a local custom closet company that was hiring designers, and she thought Annie would be the perfect fit. “At first,” Annie recalls with a grin, “I thought, no way! I know nothing about designing closets or home projects except my own. After a lot of thought and prayer, I decided to give it a try, and I was shocked! Not only did I enjoy it, but I found out I was pretty darn good at it.”

After working for two other custom closet companies, Annie learned a lot about the industry and ways in which she felt she could improve. She especially enjoyed building relationships and being immersed in her community.

“I wanted to be able to do what I love,” she explains, “while creating a company that is based on relationships ... bonding with my clients on a personal level and offering a quality product at a reasonable price. With much prayer and a huge leap of faith, in 2021 I formed The Closet Niche. I built it upon the five values I feel are the building

Annie started The Closet Niche by herself, from the ground up, in her garage, and it is now a fullservice custom closet company and design studio with multiple employees and positions to fill.

They recently won the 2024 Best of Lake Award in the Specialty Category for the second year in a row. With Lake Norman Home Builders Association and voted on by builders from the National Home Builders Association, Annie graciously accepted the award: “It is an honor and a pleasure to be recognized as part of this incredible industry. I can’t thank my team enough for all their hard work and dedication.”

With faith as strong as her work ethic, Annie says she may not have it all figured out, but with belief in what is possible and holding tight to yourself and your values, you just might find your perfect niche.

“I often turn to Jeremiah 29:11,” she smiles. “’I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ I live by faith that even though I don’t know what tomorrow brings, I have assurance that He does have a plan. I will continue to pray for His will in my life and business and that He will allow me to continue to serve the community and give back where I can.” w

bisque 3 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons dry sherry

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1/2 pound crabmeat (I buy mine at Publix’s seafood counter in a small 8-oz container)

4 cups half & half 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon Old Bay seasoning Dash of salt & pepper

Finely chopped chives, for garnish Lemon wedges, for serving (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

1 Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat.

Add the flour and whisk for about 1 minute, until well blended.

2 Whisking constantly, gradually add the half & half.

3 Add the mustard, Old Bay seasoning, salt, and pepper.

4 Bring to boil, whisking frequently. As soon as the soup starts to boil, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook, uncovered, until thickened, about 30 seconds.

5 Stir in the sherry and crabmeat.

Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. If the soup is too thick, add water, little by little, until desired consistency. Garnish with chives and lemon wedge.

The big learning here is that feeling both stressed and overwhelmed is about our narrative of emotional and mental depletion — there’s just too much going on to manage effectively. Naming the emotion helps us understand how to move through it.

OVERWHELM is the

all-too-common feeling that our lives are somehow unfolding faster than the human nervous system and psyche are able to manage well. Our bodies and minds are experiencing that quicksand feeling.

Non-doing is important because there’s a growing body of research that indicates that we don’t process other emotional information accurately when we feel overwhelmed, and this can result in poor decision making.

There is growing evidence that the antidote to feeling overwhelmed appears to be nothingness or “non-doing” time. Now, I’ve trained myself to couple the terms “overwhelm” and “do-nothing.”

When I am actually feeling overwhelmed, I say, “I’m overwhelmed, and I need 10–15 minutes of nondoing.” I normally walk the parking lot at work or go outside at home.
