Rob Saunders
Distinguished Alumnus
Rob Saunders’ leadership and community service as well as his extensive involvement in the oil and gas industry have helped make Lloydminster a better place to live, work and do business.
In the early 1980s, he was one of the first students to take the Heavy Oil Operations Technician program at Lakeland College. He later took 4th and 3rd class power engineering through the college.
Rob Saunders worked his way up in the oilfield sector, working for companies such as Husky Energy, Murphy Oil, Amoco, Corlac and National Oilwell. He also owned oilfield contracting and business management companies.
Recognizing the importance of community involvement, he joined the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce in the early 1990s. Since then he has served in many of the executive positions and is still involved with the organization. He has also been directly involved in a number of economic development initiatives in the Lloydminster area.
Rob Saunders was elected to Lloydminster City Council in 2003. In November 2012 he became deputy mayor and in the fall of 2013 he was elected mayor.
Higher education is important to Rob Saunders and he believes the relationship Lakeland College has with industry in this region is a successful formula that has helped the community and region thrive.
It is with great honour that Lakeland College inducts Rob Saunders, Class of ’83, to the Alumni Wall of Distinction.
Vic Juba
Distinguished Citizen
While Vic Juba’s career in the oil industry was a long and successful one, he is likely best known for his deep commitment to the community of Lloydminster.
This man of action has contributed countless hours to a wide array of local committees, projects and non-profit organizations including Rotary, Lions Club, Lloydminster Exhibition Association, OTS Heavy Oil Interpretive Centre, Lloydminster Leisure Centre and numerous summer and winter games committees. He was instrumental in the development of a community theatre at Lakeland College’s Lloydminster Campus. In recognition of his work on the project, the theatre was subsequently named the Vic Juba Community Theatre.
As for his career, Vic Juba worked for Husky Oil for almost 40 years. When he started in 1953, one of his first jobs was to test product from the Borradaile Refinery east of Vermilion. His position was then transferred to the refinery in Lloydminster. After a successful career with Husky, concluding with four years as communications coordinator at the Bi-Provincial Upgrader project, Vic Juba retired in 1993. Since then he’s been a full-time volunteer and Lloydminster has reaped the benefits of his service.
It is with great respect that Lakeland College recognizes Vic Juba, of Lloydminster, as a Distinguished Citizen and awards him an Honorary Bachelor of Applied Business Degree.

Award Presentations
President’s Medal
The most prestigious award given by Lakeland College, the President’s Medal, is awarded to a graduating student at each campus who has demonstrated excellence in academics and leadership in student activities. Each President's Medal is numbered and embossed with the crest of Lakeland College. This year, medals #48, #49, and #50 are being awarded. Nominations came from all facets of the College including faculty, support staff and students, and are reviewed by the Awards Committee with a recommendation made to the President.
This year’s recipient for the Lloydminster Campus is Haylee Dayton, graduate of the University Transfer program. Ali Mullin, graduate of the Agribusiness program, and Mitchell Byrt of the Conservation and Reclamation program were the recipients for this award on the Vermilion Campus.
Governor General’s Medal
The Governor General's Medal was established in 1873 and is awarded to the student who graduates with the highest academic standing in a diplomalevel post-secondary program. This medal is numbered and engraved with the Crest of the Royal Arms of Canada. The recipient will be registered with the Chancellery of Canadian Orders and Decoration at Rideau Hall, Ottawa.
This award is presented to Shauntelle Fox, graduate of the Animal Health Technology program on the Vermilion Campus.
