Lakeland College Welcome Guide

Welcome to Lakeland!
Welcome to Lakeland College! We are so pleased you’ve chosen to join our team. In this handbook, you’ll find just about everything you need to know about working at Lakeland, from the important things like our mission, vision and values, to the fun stuff like where to find the tastiest lunch options.
We hope this handbook answers all your questions, but if it doesn’t, please reach out to your supervisor or check out FRED, our intranet! You can find out more about FRED on page 9.

Askгyiwimamгhcгtotamowin
Here at Lakeland College, we acknowledge that the land we gather on is the traditional homeland, hunting, and ceremonial gathering places of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit. The Plains Cree, Woodland Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis, Dene, and Nakota Sioux people have practiced their culture and languages on Treaty 6 and Métis Region 2 territories for generations and were the original caretakers of this land. Many First Nation, Métis and Inuit peoples call this land home today and have done so for millennia. We would like to acknowledge the history we have created together on this land, and to be thankful for the opportunity to walk together side-by-side in friendship, learning from our past, and promoting positive relationships for the past, present and future.
Three members of our Indigenous Student Committee created this land acknowledgment for Lakeland College. Kiera Comeau, Samantha O’Reilly and Ryan Powder wrote the askīyiwimamīhcītotamowin. The English translation of this Cree concept is the act of acknowledging the earth (land).

“Each student at Lakeland represents a success story –whether it’s the support they received in choosing and applying to Lakeland, the passion they found in the classrooms and beyond, or the assistance they received overcoming whatever barriers stood in their way. And every one of those success stories would not be possible without the faculty and staff at Lakeland who pour their energy, creativity and passion into making Lakeland College one of the best places to work and study.
At Lakeland, we know our strength is our people – the faculty and staff who dedicate their time to providing students with a hands-on, real-world education. It has always been important to us to ensure we provide a supportive, positive work environment, one which prioritizes our employees’ physical and mental health, as well as work-life balance.”
-Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president and CEO, Lakeland College
Learn About Lakeland
Lakeland College is the third oldest post-secondary institution in Alberta. We started as a demonstration farm location in 1911, and then we officially opened our doors as the Vermilion School of Agriculture in 1913.
We started as an ag school and agriculture still remains a huge part of our history and our current program offerings. Over the years, however, Lakeland has evolved with the rest of the world.
We closed our doors in 1918 to weather the flu epidemic, we survived the Great Depression, and during World War II, served as a training centre for the Canadian Women’s Army Corps.
Our name has changed four times over the years to reflect our evolving program offerings:

Vermilion School of Agriculture 1913

Vermilion Agricultural & Vocational College 1963

Vermilion College 1970 Lakeland College 1975
Our motto – Ever to Excel – has stayed the same since it was first decreed in 1928. Our dedication to experiential and hands-on learning has stayed just as constant.
Today, alongside our agricultural training, Lakeland offers programming that includes environmental sciences, human services, trades and technology, interior design, energy, business, health and wellness, fire and emergency services, university transfer and foundational learning.
