13 PROVES LUCKY FOR INTERIOR DESIGN PROGRAM For the 13th consecutive year, Lakeland College interior design technology students earned top place finishes in student design competitions. Coming in first place in the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) 2015-16 Charette Design Competition is Sydney Melnyk and in second place is Sara Downing. Rebecca Kurczaba received honourable mention. Melnyk also took first place in the kitchen portion of the 2015-16 Schoolhouse Charm Student Design Competition. Placing second was Brittany McQueen, with honourable mention going to Downing. In the bath portion of the competition Naomi Mason received honourable mention. All of these students graduated in June. “Congratulations to our award-winning students. We are proud of their achievements and the incredible level of talent and skill they have developed,” says Dave King, dean of the School of Trades and Technology. “Lakeland’s interior design technology team continually strives to provide our students with the best program possible so that they are able to take the lead and achieve their goals. The success of our students reflects the high quality of our interior design technology program.” Proud of these accomplishments, Melnyk says Lakeland’s
winning reputation is what enticed her to enrol in the program. “When I was considering which school to apply to, seeing that Lakeland students have won consistently and accomplished so much, it made Lakeland College standout,” says Melnyk, who graduated with distinction and now works as an interior design technologist at Henry Downing Architects in Saskatoon, Sask. “Knowing that so many Lakeland students have won year-onyear gives the college an edge and makes it exciting.” Current second-year interior design technology students are now working on their NKBA design entries. Lakeland’s interior design technology program was recognized with the NKBA 2015 Excellence in Education Award in the fall. Lakeland is one of only 10 post-secondary institutions in North America to receive this award. The interior design technology program is a two-year diploma program based at Lakeland’s Vermilion campus. Students go beyond colour and style by mastering design skills and unleashing their creative mind in our design studio, complete with drafting tables and a specialized computer lab.
