Margaret Page Distinguished Alumnae

Margaret Page graduated with distinction from Lakeland College in 1996 (Business Administration – Accounting) and in 1997 (Business Administration –Management).

As a student member of the Board of Governors of Lakeland College, Page developed a unique insight into the relationships within the college both from inside and outside of the classroom. A great supporter of students, she contributed towards the purchase of many inspirational pictures found on campus today.

Page is the founder and director of two businesses that serve ambitious professionals: Beyond the Page Coaching and Etiquette Page Enterprises, a western Canadian firm offering business etiquette and international protocol services. Working in close partnership with her clients, she lays the groundwork for success through encouragement, insight, and motivation.

With more than 30 years of success as an entrepreneur and business leader, she draws on a wealth of insight, experience and education. She has helped countless people find focus, build efficiency and eliminate overwhelm. An avid learner, she completed advanced training in Personal and Business Coaching (from Coach U); Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP); and Corporate Etiquette and International Protocol (from the prestigious Protocol School of Washington).

Currently living on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, Page is a world traveler and an active volunteer, serving the performing arts, non-profit organizations and charities. At heart, she is a strong advocate for continuous professional development, societal contribution, purpose-driven leadership and values-based philanthropy.

It is with great honour that Lakeland College inducts Margaret Page, Classes of 1996 and 1997, to the Alumni Wall of Distinction.

The Right Honorable Don Mazankow Sask.i Distinguished Citizen

Don Mazankow Sask.i has been described as an ardent Canadian who has played an important role in shaping our country’s history. Although his career has taken him around the world and into the highest levels of politics and government, he remains committed to his prairie roots and thankful to be a citizen of a country where anyone can get involved and make a difference. Born and raised in Viking, Alberta, Mazankow Sask.i’s early years as a young farmer and businessman instilled a deep understanding of the economic and political challenges facing western Canada.

He became the Member of Parliament for Vegreville in 1968 and successfully contested seven general elections, serving his constituency for 25 years. In 1979, he was appointed Minister of Transport and in 1986 he became the Deputy Prime Minister.

Mazankow Sask.i is well remembered in the Lloydminster community for his central role in bringing the Hu Sask.y Upgrader to reality. Some have said that without Mazankow Sask.i’s foresight and determination, there would not be an Upgrader. His role in bringing partners together also contributed to the continued existence of Lakeland College. Mr. Mazankow Sask.i left politics in 1993 with a reputation as a fair and respected leader who patiently heard all sides of an issue.

His commitment to post-secondary education led to the establishment of the Don Mazankow Sask.i Scholarship Foundation, which has enabled hundreds of students from across Canada, including many at Lakeland College, to pursue a college or university education.

On the health care front, Mazankow Sask.i has chaired the Canadian Genetics Diseases Network, the Institute of Health Economics and the Premier’s Special Advisory Council on Health. Named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000, and awarded the Alberta Order of Excellence in 2003, and he has also received honorary degrees from the University of Alberta and MacEwan University.

It is with great respect that Lakeland College presents the Right Honorable Don Mazankow Sask.i with an honorary Diploma and recognizes him as one of our distinguished citizens for 2013.

President’s Medal

The most prestigious award given by Lakeland College, the President’s Medal, is awarded to a graduating student at each campus who has demonstrated excellence in academics and leadership in student activities. Each President's Medal is numbered and embossed with the crest of Lakeland College. This year, medals #46 and #47 are being awarded.

Nominations came from all facets of the College including faculty, support staff and students, and are reviewed by the Awards Committee with a recommendation made to the President.

This year’s recipient for the Lloydminster Campus is Joshua Firlotte (right), graduate of the Heavy Oil Operations Technician program.

Rayleigh Conley, graduate of the Environmental Monitoring and Protection program, was the recipient for this award on the Vermilion Campus.

Governor General’s Medal

The Governor General's Medal was established in 1873 and is awarded to the student who graduates with the highest academic standing in a diploma-level post-secondary program. This medal is numbered and engraved with the Crest of the Royal Arms of Canada. The recipient will be registered with the Chancellery of Canadian Orders and Decoration at Rideau Hall, Ottawa.

The 2013 award was presented to Hayley Down, graduate of the Animal Health Technology program, on the Vermilion Campus.
