THANK YOU! Yes, THANK YOU, for your investment in the Lake Land College Foundation! The difference you made during the year was evident in many ways: through the purchase of equipment, to support of programs and college initiatives, to providing support for students to attend Lake Land College and achieve their dream of an education.

The difference you made was critically important during a challenging time in the history of the college and proved the importance of a strong foundation to public higher educational institutions. Foundation scholarships and college support have been especially important these past few years of the state budget impasse that saw the elimination of the Monetary Award Program financial aid to our students and limited funding to the college.

In this FY17 Annual Report, we celebrate the many ways YOU have made a difference. For Hazel Moore Crosby, it was a passion for education that led her to include the Lake Land College Foundation in her estate plan. For Heartland Dental, it was building the communities they serve through a qualified workforce. For Bob and Joyce Adcock, it was about giving to help others. And because of YOU, FY17 also saw the largest amount ever given to the Foundation...$1.1 million! So, THANK YOU! The Lake Land College Foundation is perfectly positioned as a partner with the college for tremendous growth and success in the years to come. Letter from the

Lake Land College President

Dear Friends, During the past year we have had many opportunities to reflect on our rich history as we begin the celebration of our 50th year anniversary. As we look through our archives it is apparent the Foundation, our donors and partners have been a key component in our success and growth.

The Lake Land College Foundation was organized on September 23, 1970. Mrs. James Honnold was elected the Foundation’s first president. Other cabinet appointments included Lake Land staff members Tim Helton and Dr. Webb.

The Foundation received its first gift about six months later from Mrs. Virginia Carter of Shelbyville, Illinois. Her $1,000 gift was to be invested with the proceeds going toward a newly established scholarship in honor of her uncle, Mr. John W. Hawk, according to an article in the Charleston Times Courier on January 22, 1971. Today, the endowment totals more than $24,000.

We continue to award this scholarship today as well as hundreds more due to the numerous gifts from Lake Land community residents, businesses, charitable and service organizations, alumni and employees. Just like Mrs. Carter, all of you see the exponential power of helping students earn a college education.

Foundation scholarships and college support have been especially important these past few years of the state budget impasse that saw the elimination of the state’s financial aid, the Monetary Award Program (MAP) and limited funding to the college.

With the impasse behind us, we are pleased to begin our 50th anniversary celebration on solid financial ground. We have emerged a stronger college due to the resilience and diligence of our Lake Land College family. Please know, we consider you to be a part of this community and extend our sincere appreciation to you and the work you do on our behalf. We are so thankful for your support and shared focus on our students.

In this report, we recognize your numerous gifts and support that allow us to move forward together in changing the lives of our students and communities through the power of learning. The past 50 years have been an outstanding success story, and with the help of donors like you we can continue the narrative of student success stories.

The Lake Land College Dental Hygiene Clinic

opened this fall with a fresh look.

Thanks to a gift from Heartland Dental, the lab boasts brand-new work stations, which patients and students alike are enjoying.

“We have had several long-time patients come in and comment on how professional and inviting the lab looks,” Dental Hygiene Instructor/ Director of Dental Hygiene Debbie Thomason said.

In addition to the aesthetics, the equipment is providing excellent learning opportunities for students.

Nieman agreed, saying one of her patients shared with her all of the generous donations Heartland Dental makes to the community and education. “It’s great to know how philanthropic a corporate dental company can be and how it is impacting the community.”

Heartland Dental’s gift to the Lake Land College Foundation extended beyond the $250,000 monetary value as it allowed the college to take advantage of the organization’s pricing discount, bringing the total gift value to $850,000.

“As second year students, we learned on the old stations. We were used to a certain set of equipment. The process of learning how to use a new set of equipment is a great experience because that is what we will have to do when we begin our careers,” Sydney Niemann of Hillsboro said.

In addition to the traditional equipment, students are very excited to work with new computer stations that are being added to the equipment purchased with Heartland Dental’s gift.

“A lot of professional offices use digital charting and patient files and we are excited to learn how to do this,” Katie Kochan of Custer Park, Ill. said.

“In addition to being beneficial to us, the computers are also helpful to patients as their records will be stored and easily accessible online,” Niemann added.

While the students are excited about the outstanding learning opportunities, they also realize the significance of Heartland Dental’s gift.

“It is very generous of Heartland Dental to do this,” Kochan said. “I didn’t know a big corporation would

The impact on Lake Land will be felt well into the future as each year about 30 new students enter the lab and begin treating family members as they advance into caring for patients in the public clinic.

“We are truly grateful to Heartland Dental for partnering with Lake Land College and investing in our students’ future. This generous gift will provide state-of-the-art training equipment and educational opportunities for our dental hygiene students,” Lake Land College President Josh Bullock said.

Lake Land College students provide dental cleanings, X-rays/digital images and education to patients in the Dental Hygiene Clinic on campus in the Northwest Building.

The gift provides for new dental units consisting of chairs and equipment that allow students to receive handson training and experience found in the workplace.

The new units allowed computers to be added to workstations enabling students to use software to chart electronically, enter patient information and data and receive training on technology current to many offices in the industry.

The gift also provided for the creation of a Dental Hygiene Enhancement Lab instructor position which is a source for specialized tutoring for students who are struggling or just need some extra help.

“Not only is Heartland Dental committed to supporting our surrounding community, but supporting those who are shaping the minds of future dental professionals,” explained Patrick Bauer, president and chief executive officer at Heartland Dental.

“As the dental industry continues to evolve, world-class education is crucial. Lake Land College understands this and continually strives to set students up for success. We’re excited to help them advance their educational capabilities for future hygienists even further.”

There are 50 students enrolled in the Lake Land College Dental Hygiene program, with approximately 1,000 alumni graduating since 1968. Many of the alumni are now employed with Heartland Dental, the largest dental support organization in the United States with more than 800 supported dental offices located in 34 states.

With headquarters in Effingham, Ill., and founded by Rick Workman, DMD, Heartland Dental offers supported dentists and team members continuing professional education and leadership training, along with a variety of non-clinical administrative services including staffing, human relations, procurement, administration, financial, marketing and information technology.

The Adcocks

always know you arrive at their home.

As you turn in the drive and admire their lovely brick home on the left and perfect white rail fence on the right you are immediately greeted by the loud braying of Jack, their white donkey.

While it’s best that he greets you from afar, growing rambunctious in his old age, Jack is still happy to peek out through the fence as you begin your visit with Bob and Joyce Adcock.

“This house was built when I was two years old,” Bob Adcock explains, leading you into an addition to the home that includes a large office room with an oval oak table that serves as a welcoming gathering spot.

Along the walls you see aerial photos of their large farming operation that started some 65 years ago. With a few acres it all began with a little bit of savings and a lot of heart.

Times were tight at that time, but the young newlyweds were focused on their future.

“We had no money, but we were fortunate. We came along at a time in life when people could do something for themselves. I worked hard and bought a few acres at a time,” Bob recalled.

Today, the Adcocks own and farm 3,600 acres of crops. They have raised cattle and hogs along the way and worked on machinery assembly for Sloan Implement. They are a family

corporation with sons Tom and Bobby, Lake Land College alumni, carrying the workload.

Looking back through a family scrapbook from their early years to today, it’s clear that while the automation and equipment has clearly advanced throughout the decades, the hard work and determination of their farming life has remained constant.

As the farm became established and they were able to get ahead of their debt, Bob realized they were at a point in their lives when they could give something back and help others.

His first experience was with Millikin University where he and his brother established a scholarship in honor of their mother.

The Adcocks then started thinking about Lake Land College, where two of their sons and four of their grandsons attended.

“We had always known Tom Reedy, former ag division chair, and we met Ed Dumphy, the college’s first ag division chair, when our sons were showing cattle,” Bob explained. “It was only natural that we thought about the ag program at Lake Land College.”

“There is a lot of gratification in helping young people with a scholarship,” Bob said. “I enjoy getting the notes from the scholarship recipients.”

The Adcocks are sure to receive several more notes in the future, as their endowment continues to grow and generate earnings to be awarded in scholarships.

“We’re equally proud of both our Lake Land and Millikin scholarships.

We want to keep them growing,” Bob said.

Looking through the photos it’s easy to see how the Adcocks’ generous spirit has shaped the more-than-65 years of their marriage, family and farm. They are very proud of the advancements they have made along the way and their five children, 15 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. It is very clear that all have benefited from the opportunities presented through their family farm and lifelong work. They are grateful to be able to share their blessings in a way that will benefit young students interested in entering the ag profession.

That thought led them to meet with Jackie Joines, executive director for college advancement, to talk about opportunities with the Lake Land College Foundation. Joines visited with them at their home, and they determined that they would like their gift to benefit ag scholarships.

From the time Hazel Moore Crosby

was born in 1908 to the time she graduated from college in 1930, the percentage of women in the United States earning bachelor’s degrees grew from 19 percent to 40 percent.

Even though the percentage of women earning degrees was growing at the time, there were still traditional expectations in the workplace. Crosby, who was launching her teaching career, experienced these expectations firsthand, family friend Lynn Neal explained.

“As Hazel reminisced about her teaching career, I recall her telling me that while she was at Gays High School, she had been offered the position of principal, but she refused because she knew that a woman could not be a principal if she were married. Even though she wasn’t married at the time, she told me that she emphatically disagreed with this policy because she had earned the degree to be a principal. Whether she had a husband should not make a difference in her being advanced to the top position of the school,” Lynn recalled.

This tenacity drove Crosby’s entire 102-year life. An avid lifelong learner, volunteer and educator, Crosby’s desire to improve herself and those around her has left a lasting legacy to be admired.

Crosby was born on the Moore Farm west of Dorans, Ill. where she attended local schools. For high school, her parents sent her to Jennings Seminary for Girls in Aurora. She was terribly homesick so far from home, but she trusted that her mother knew what was

best, said Neal, whose grandmother and parents were dear friends of Crosby.

her to pursue a master’s degree in education from the University of Illinois.

She graduated in 1938.

In 1926, Crosby returned to East Central Illinois to attend Eastern Illinois Teachers College, now known as Eastern Illinois University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts which gave her the tools to earn her first teaching job at Gays High School, teaching every subject in the classroom.

Later that year, Crosby began teaching in the Mattoon Community Unit 2 school system from which she retired in 1964 after 35 years of dedicated service. Her focuses of instruction at Longfellow School, Mattoon High School and Central Junior High School were Latin, mathematics, English and social studies.

To help women be proud, steadfast and independent in their lives, Hazel put into motion one of her greatest humanitarian actions: a bequest to the Lake Land Foundation in her estate plan to be used for nursing and cosmetology scholarships.

A few years later—shortly after turning down the principal job—she met her future husband of 43 years, Arthur Gwyn Crosby, USPS mail carrier. Even though they were newly married, Crosby’s passion for education led

After her retirement, she continued to tutor students enrolled in Mattoon’s Homebound Student Program, as well as volunteering at Mattoon elementary schools in the Title I reading programs.

Besides continuing to volunteer in the educational sector after her retirement, Crosby was an active community member. She was a lifelong member of the National Education Association, Illinois Education Association, the Coles County Retired Teachers Association and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She volunteered at EIU’s Doudna Fine Arts Center, served at Bagelfest, volunteered at the Mattoon Tourism Department and participated in and presented at Elderhostels throughout the United States.

Her hobbies and pastimes included membership in the Coles County China Painters, playing bridge, reading and extensive traveling. She was a lifelong member of the First Methodist Church and taught Sunday school there as well as at Brookstone South.

She continued to be active her entire life, Neal said. “For years, she and I would deliver Peace Meals; and, even at 102, she would be my navigator for the deliveries.

In recognition of her volunteer services throughout her life, Crosby received the Salvation Army’s Light Brigade and Triumph Circle Award for outstanding humanitarian service.

“Hazel always felt that education is a powerful tool: it is not a materialistic possession that can be destroyed by nature; rather, it is a cherished tool that, if used correctly, can help one to be successful in his/her chosen profession. Moreover, a key to this success is being a lifelong learner.

I remember that at 102, Hazel still watched national, state and local news, documentaries and even her favorite TV program, Jeopardy,” Neal recalled.

Crosby and her husband were never blessed with their own children, but she stated in the past that teaching gave her “more children than anyone could count.”

“She taught them, cared for them and wanted the best for all of them, but she especially wanted girls, women to be proud, steadfast and independent in their lives,” Neal said.

Her professional advisors helped her plan so that a $700,000plus estate gift was made. By establishing an endowment, the foundation will use the proceeds of the investment to award scholarships to students for years to come.

Neal said it was important for Crosby to create opportunities for young women to achieve their educational goals by earning a college degree or certificate at Lake Land College.

When Neal has the opportunity to talk with the recipients of Crosby’s scholarships, she inspires them with Crosby’s story.

“You, the chosen recipients of the scholarship, are now becoming a part of Hazel’s legacy. After hearing the achievements of this determined and compassionate woman, I know you will continue in your education with gratitude for her scholarship to you, with determination to be a success in your profession and with compassion in your hearts for others. If you do, you will be paying forward what Hazel Moore Crosby has given to you.”

Dr. Huels receives

Crystal Swan Award Dr. Nanci Huels, past foundation board president, left, received the annual Crystal Swan Award for her outstanding contributions to the Lake Land College Foundation.

Huels is one of few board members to serve two terms as president. During her tenure, the board updated bylaws and implemented term limits, overhauled the scholarship award process and worked with the college during the challenging budget impasse.

The Crystal Swan Award was created in 1993, as a way to recognize foundation board members who have gone above and beyond in their leadership and service to the Lake Land College Foundation during their tenure. Each recipient demonstrates a passion and commitment to the educational goals of our students that rises above all others.

“Dr. Huels believes in the mission of the foundation and the college and encourages others to be involved with Lake Land, whether it be as a donor, alumni or as a new student,” said Meg Yargus Steward, Marshall, president of the Lake Land College Foundation Board of Directors, pictured right.

Trustee Reynolds

Lake Land College Board of Trustee member Doris Reynolds was the first to receive the newly created Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award.

Reynolds, left, serves as a liaison to the Lake Land College Foundation Board of Directors and is very active in foundation and college activities.

“Doris is always willing to volunteer her time and efforts to our projects and committees. We are very grateful for her support,” Jackie Joines, executive director for college advancement, right, said.

The new award will be presented annually to an individual who has given gifts of time and talent in securing private funding on behalf of Lake Land College students.
