JOINT LETTER FROM THE LAKE LAND COLLEGE

FOUNDATION PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

YOU ONLY TURN 50 ONCE! And boy did we celebrate! We celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Lake Land College in a BIG way. YOU helped to make the celebration even better by giving a record breaking $1.65 million to support our students, programs, faculty and facilities. What an amazing gift! Whether it be our first year or our 50th year, our alumni and friends have made a significant difference by making gifts that have supported the purchase of equipment, supported programs and provided resources for students to attend Lake Land College and achieve their dream of an education. From the challenging years of state funding to the boom years of strong markets, YOU have been the investors who have made things happen! So THANK YOU for sharing our mission! This report celebrates the impact those who were investors in the early years, many of whom are among the Top 50 VIPs, along with folks such as Thomas Woodyard, Max and Louanna Jaeger, Roger and Janet Mead, and so many others who have touched countless lives at Lake Land College. It also celebrates the collective gifts so many have given that provided for the purchase of training equipment to develop the skills area manufacturers will need to employ a qualified workforce and new scoreboards that will benefit Laker athletics. Turning 50 at Lake Land College never looked so good! The college and Foundation, with your help, will boldly look toward the next 50 years changing lives and communities through the power of education. THANK YOU!

LETTER FROM THE

LAKE LAND COLLEGE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends, What a celebration we have had! Thank you for joining us for our 50th year anniversary events throughout the past year. So many of you played a key role in marking our college’s outstanding accomplishments. Beginning with the recording of the Laker Loyalty Fight Song to recognizing the Top 50 Most Influential People in our history, we have shared significant moments that we will continue to treasure well into our future. The 50th celebration also provided a great opportunity to highlight our Laker Pride. This spring, several Laker Alumni proudly wore Lake Land College pins during the work day to showcase their alma mater. Many were surprised to learn how many of their coworkers were also alumni. In fact, one company discovered that 25 percent of its 400 employees were Laker Alumni. I venture to bet that discovery would be common throughout our district as Lake Land College’s reach extends to nine out of 10 area businesses, according to a recent economic study. Many of these alumni have been so successful because they were touched by the generosity of our Foundation donors and friends. It might have been a scholarship that eased their financial burden, a new piece of equipment in a lab or a faculty member who was able to bring home knowledge from a unique professional development opportunity. With your support, the Foundation has been able to build a solid base of unrestricted funds that allows it to enrich classroom learning, enhance facilities and foster Laker spirit. Collectively, your impact causes a ripple effect on our students and communities. As we embark on our next 50 years, please know how grateful the Lake Land College Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and students are to you for your selfless generosity. In this report, the Foundation recognizes your numerous gifts and support that allow us to move forward together in changing the lives of our students and communities through the power of learning. Together, we are One Laker Nation! With gratitude,

Dr. Josh Bullock

President

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IS A

Personal Experience LAKE LAND COLLEGE EMPLOYEE

of 32 years Max Jaeger and his wife, Louanna Jaeger, Mattoon Area Education Center teacher, shared a passion for education and for helping future students. “I talked with Louanna and she felt the same as I did, we just wanted to give back and help future generations” Max Jaeger said. “When I was a teacher at THE JAEGERS’ ENDOWED Lake Land and SCHOLARSHIP IS ANTICIPATED the room was TO HELP APPROXIMATELY quiet and the 30 STUDENTS OVER THE NEXT students were 10 YEARS AND WILL taking a test, CONTINUE TO GROW. it gave me a chance just to reflect upon young people and I kept thinking over and over, the future of America is in pretty good hands,” Jaeger said. “In 32 years I saw a lot of growth in the college and how students went on to be productive tax-paying citizens, and hopefully they will continue the legacy on with their children down the road.” Jaeger said that while students studying might not make headlines, they are the ones who will ensure the future of America. The Jaegers created an endowment a few years before Louanna’s passing that will continue to support students for generations to come. All endowments are invested in perpetuity ensuring that future students will always have the opportunity for education and making a difference in their communities. From the beginning, the Lake Land College Foundation has been focused upon assisting donors in making a difference in the lives of our students. Just as each student has a different need, each method of giving is different for each donor. From scholarship to equipment to program support, the Lake Land College Foundation assists each donor in discovering the best way to give that achieves his or her intentions.

LAKE LAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

A LEGACY OF BEAUTY Carla and Neil Dettling found great comfort in directing memorial gifts to the Lake Land College Foundation after their daughter Rachel’s tragic passing shortly after graduating from the cosmetology program. Dettling’s parents said Rachel, a former county fair queen contestant, first discovered her passion at five-years-old when she was gifted a Cool Clips Barbie© doll with hair extensions. Rachel went on to receive five scholarships to Lake Land, and shared her passion for the cosmetology program on Facebook after receiving the Hazel Moore Crosby Memorial Cosmetology Scholarship at Lake Land. “The financial aspect is important, but what is most important to me is how much I’ve accomplished this school year,” Rachel posted. RACHEL’S SCHOLARSHIP WILL BE AWARDED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FALL 2018, & WILL SUPPORT ONE DREAMER, LIKE RACHEL, EACH YEAR IN PERPETUITY.

The Dettlings said that with the Rachel Michelle Dettling Memorial Scholarship they “would honor Rachel’s passion for hair and makeup and inspire others to follow their dreams.”

JUDGING THE FUTURE Alumnus and former livestock judge Tom Stoutenborough knew too well the financial demands of being a member of the livestock judging team. “Tom and I judged together for 18 years with Tom judging for at least 34,” said Tom’s wife, Toni Stoutenborough. “Tom knew that paying for the hotels and travel for judging competitions came out of the students’ or the college’s pocket, and he loved being able to help with that. We are glad we were able to honor his decision to direct memorials to the Foundation, allowing him to make a lasting impression in the area he so loved.” Memorial gifts given at the time of his passing helped ensure future students were given the GIFTS IN MEMORY OF TOM WILL SUPPORT THE LIVESTOCK JUDGING TEAM AS MEMBERS TRAVEL SOME 10,000 MILES SPENDING $18,000 ANNUALLY TO COMPETE. THE TEAM IS ANTICIPATED TO BE RANKED AMONG THE TOP FIVE COLLEGIATE TEAMS NATIONALLY.

opportunity to experience the same passion he and his wife discovered in themelves. EXTRA INCOME = EXTRA BIG HEARTS After Roger Mead bought a new welder, he enrolled at Lake Land College to learn how to use it. He was so impressed with the students he met, and the overall Lake Land experience, that he and his wife, Janet, wanted to make a difference. The Meads, both retired, were not sure how best to do so. Faced with a mandatory withdrawal from their IRA, but with no real need for the income, the Meads found a unique way to support students by giving through their retirement plans. The Meads each IN RETIREMENT, felt those funds would better serve THE MEADS HELP students at Lake Land College. APPROXIMATELY 10 STUDENTS ANNUALLY. “To me there was no other choice,” said Roger. The Meads said they made their gift to help students who were in financial need, but less likely to get scholarships. “You would not believe how many ‘thank yous’ we have received from students saying, ‘I’m a first generation student’ or ‘I am a second generation college student’,” Janet Mead said. “We see that we made the right choice and made a difference in these students’ lives.” SMALL INVESTMENT MAKES BIG IMPACT Leah Dvorak, a Paris native and graduate of the Lake Land College Dental Hygiene program, wanted to thank Lake Land College for the career path she loved and for showing her how important dental health is to overall health. “I immediately wanted to give back, but didn’t have a lot of money to do so since I’d just graduated. My financial advisor suggested I pay a little bit at a time, something I could afford,” Dvorak said.

LEAH DVORAK WAS ABLE TO INCREASE THE SIZE & IMPACT OF HER GIFT BY MORE THAN 247% BY GIVING THROUGH LIFE INSURANCE.

Dvorak worked with the Foundation to purchase a life insurance policy on her life, with the Lake Land College Foundation serving as both the owner and beneficiary of the policy. In turn, Dvorak paid the premium each year, an affordable amount for a new college graduate, until recently when the cash value of the policy equaled the face value. That allowed the Foundation to convert the policy to a paid-up policy, making the policy fund itself. “It was something I could do for the future, leaving a legacy for my college and hygiene program. Now I am up to $20,000 in my contribution.” Dvorak can take great pride in knowing that her vision in 1979 will help future students follow her in a career she loved. A LITTLE BIT GOES A LONG WAY Whether it be through memorial gifts, gifts of retirement plans, life insurance, stock gifts or other vehicles, the Lake Land College Foundation focuses on the difference YOU want to make in the lives of our students. It is as Jaeger said, “if you’re a donor there is nothing small about you. What you give might be small, but you, as a donor, are not small, and a little bit can go a long way.” When people invest in education, they are investing in the future.

LAKE LAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

SUPPORTING THE COLLEGE IS A

STRONG FOUNDATION

FOR THE PAST 48 YEARS, the Lake Land College

Foundation has supported the college and its students through a variety of activities made possible by the financial support of its donors. Foundation board members, with the assistance and guidance of staff, have worked diligently to create opportunities for the college that enhance learning opportunities. That support has resulted in gifts of classroom training materials and equipment, campus beautification, updates to athletic facilities and many more initiatives.

“We are fortunate to have outstanding Foundation board members and college staff members who are committed to seeking out new investors, who through their gifts provide the resources needed to enrich the excellence of Lake Land College,” Jacqueline Joines, executive director of college advancement, said. 100% OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, FOUNDATION BOARD, & THE ALUMNI BOARD MADE A GIFT IN FY18.

“The Foundation exists for the sole purpose of supporting the college. As a non-profit organization, the Foundation provides private support that public dollars can’t or supplements state appropriations in a way that helps insulate the college from the ebb and flow of funding,” Joines added. Foundation staff regularly discuss needs and funding opportunities with college faculty and staff and then translate those needs into opportunities potential investors might be interested in. However, the real goal is to focus on helping

those investors make their dreams become reality in making a gift. Support opportunities are categorized as student support that includes scholarships and internships for students; program support including equipment and other support for academic programs; faculty support including professional development funds for faculty; and facility support that helps the overall bricks and mortar learning environment of the campus.

10

24 STUDENTS WILL UTILIZE THE DENTAL HYGIENE LAB EACH SEMESTER

Recent examples of gifts that benefit students and an academic program include the Heartland Dental Dental Hygiene Lab located in the Northwest Building on campus. The gift provided for new dental units, chairs and equipment that allow students to receive hands-on training and experience found in the

LAKE LAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

workplace. With the new units, the college installed computers that allow students to utilize software to chart electronically, enter patient information and data and receive training on technology current to many offices in the industry. “Heartland Dental is just one example of assisting donors in making a difference through good stewardship of their investment. By ensuring students have the best equipment possible to facilitate learning for greater success in the

work environment, area employers are supporting their goal of retaining high quality employees, as well as contributing to the industry as a whole,” Joines said. 5 AREA EMPLOYERS WITH AN EMPLOYMENT BASE OF 2,500 ARE UTILIZING FOUNDATION-PURCHASED TRAINING EQUIPMENT

The Foundation has also been able to use a portion of unrestricted funds given for supporting the greatest needs of the college. Recent examples include the creation of a general scholarship fund and the purchase of an injection molding machine for the Workforce Development Center. The Foundation facilitated gifts from Willie Podestá Young, daughter of Dr. William L. and Margaret Podestá, along with memorial gifts given at the time of her father’s passing, to create the Dr. William L. and Margaret Podestá Park at the college. William Podestá was a former Lake Land College Board of Trustees member.

Located between the campus pond and Podestá Drive, the park is named after the Podestá family and will honor veterans as well. Phase one of the park is already complete and plans for a veterans’ memorial are already in development. “We are pleased to assist Ms. Podestá Young in creating a lasting memorial for her parents and in creating a tribute to the role Lake Land College has played in the lives of so many veterans,” Joines said. Dr. Podestá was also a veteran. Foundation support extends to athletics as well. Laker fans will enjoy a new video scoreboard, new scoreboard in the Field House, and electronic score table for basketball and volleyball competitions, as well as new outdoor scoreboards for baseball and softball. The Foundation helps bring the college and community together in many ways to make a difference in the lives of so many. Foundationhosted events celebrate the alumni and friends and their investment in Lake Land College. Most recently, the Foundation celebrated

these efforts through special 50th anniversary events, including the Henningsens’ Homecoming concert, the annual Alumni Recognition event, celebration of Lake Land Alumni in the Workforce, and in recognizing the Top 50 Very Important People who made a significant contribution during the first 50 years of the college. Together, the Lake Land College Foundation and Lake Land College work to unite the Lake Land community and the people that make it special resulting in greater opportunities for students, changed lives, a skilled workforce and stronger communities.

THOMAS WOODYARD

A LEGACY OF HARD WORK, EDUCATION & GENEROSITY

16

LAKE LAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

THOMAS WOODYARD DEVELOPED HIS PASSION FOR EDUCATION from the values

his parents instilled in him on the family farm. The importance of family, hard work, and education were values that remained with him his entire life. The eighth of nine children born to A. Lincoln and Iva Hanna Woodyard in rural Coles County at the height of the Great Depression, Woodyard’s parents were farmers, and despite not having any education past the eighth grade themselves, were determined to teach their children essential life lessons. The Woodyard children were responsible for helping on their family farm. Lincoln Woodyard wanted to give his children a start in life, his way of teaching them about hard work and how to manage their finances. Woodyard internalized these lessons and applied them throughout his life. Beginning his formal education in one room schools, Woodyard attended Eastern Illinois State Teacher’s College—now known as Eastern Illinois University—where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education. Woodyard then earned a master’s degree in geography at the University of Illinois in 1952 before serving in the military until 1954. Upon discharge, Woodyard taught in Arizona before relocating to Riverton, Wyoming where he taught until retirement. Five of his siblings and a brother-in-law attended Utterbacks Business School in Mattoon as well. Woodyard loved learning and spent three years working as a seasonal park ranger at the Grand Canyon, and spent a summer studying in Alaska. All of his experiences in life were

what made Woodyard such a great teacher and lifelong learner. He felt that teaching life skills was as important as teaching the “Three R’s: reading, writing, and arithmetic.” In order to accomplish this, Woodyard spent time with students outside the traditional classroom. Camping trips with his students were just one example of how he taught valuable life lessons passed on to him from his rural upbringing. Woodyard passed away in 2016 having thoughtfully planned his estate. His 18-page handwritten will—verified by the courts as a valid will—supported the organizations that reflected his interests and values. The bulk of THOMAS’ THREE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS WILL IMPACT THE LIVES OF SIX STUDENTS JUST IN THE FIRST YEAR.

his estate, was left to 83 different organizations that supported his moral belief in hard work, education and planning. Thomas meticulously outlined his intentions with each bequest. It took 21 months for his coexecutors, niece Judy Woodyard Reiners and his friend Craig Cooper, to carry out his intentions and make the distributions outlined in what Craig described as being a “totally charitable will.” “Thomas was a man of values. He kept coming back to the lessons he learned back home. Hard work, education and planning were as important as family to him. His will reflected his diverse interests and was his way of making a difference in the lives of others,” said Judy Reiners.

The Lake Land College Foundation was one of the many organizations that Thomas thoughtfully included in his estate. He chose to remember his parents and siblings who inspired him, by creating three endowed scholarships in their name at Lake Land College; the Lincoln and Iva Hanna Woodyard Memorial Ag Scholarship, Dorothy M. Woodyard Memorial Business Scholarship, and Mabel A. Woodyard Memorial Business Scholarship. “Mr. Woodyard’s gift will have a huge impact on our students,” said Jackie Joines, executive director for college advancement. “My only wish is that he had notified us of his decision to include the Lake Land College Foundation so that we could have gotten to know him and properly thanked him.” Woodyard’s generous gift to the Lake Land College Foundation will have a lasting impact on future students with similar backgrounds to his own. Like his parents, Woodyard preferred to equip people with the tools necessary to achieve success. Because of his hard work and thoughtful planning, his gift to education at Lake Land College will do just that, forever.
