We all love our pets! And, if we could, we’d probably all love to have them at our feet during the work day. The unconditional love of a dog would certainly help many of us through those stressful phone calls or frustrating emails. But, before pets are welcomed into your business, it’s important to create some simple guidelines to keep everyone, including your four-legged friends, safe.

Who knew I’d end up in marketing? My business is all about relationships. I help make sure that our customers come back to the store and tell their friends about us. I have three favorite friends: kids, grownups who will rub my belly, and Sam. Kids are great; I have two at home that I have raised to be pretty well mannered 10th graders, but the ones at the store give me more treats (I’m always ready for a treat). And, sometimes, they rub my belly too!
Then there are the grown-ups. They come into the store, I saunter over to them, and sit. As they reach down to pat me, I collapse on the floor and roll over, feet up. Now the intended pat becomes a belly rub! (See, marketing is all about being clever!) And then there is Sam. He comes in with his wife. She’s a shopper. He’s a massage therapist! While she shops, he sits in one of the store chairs, and I collapse at his feet, paws up. Next thing I know I’m getting
a professional paw & leg massage! Marketing isn’t my only job at the store. I’m a comfort to Mom and her helpers. I help the UPS and Fed Ex guys when they need it. They pat me while Mom signs for the shipment. I let Mom know when the mailman comes in. He’s a nice guy, but doesn’t stop to rub my tummy. At about 4:30 I relocate myself to the front door and wait. This lets Mom know it’s time to go home (my dinner time). I’m a hard worker,
so I get a vacation too. As I write this, I’m at my cottage in the Canadian woods on a beautiful lake, with no roads that means no cars, and open land to run! It’s a pleasant 78 with plenty of sunshine. My day consists of alternating sleeping spots from the porch to the dock. There are lots of kids and grown-ups to feed me treats and rub my tummy. Life is good (by the way, we sell that at the store)! When you get a chance, come & see me; I’ll show you around and you may rub my tummy.

Almost 10 years later, I run the home, the kids, Mom and Dad, and, Home Essentials; a small house wares store in Downtown Lakeland. Papers are strewn about. The desk phone will not stop ringing then as soon as it does the cell phone begins to buzz, another call. Tons of unread emails await, desktop alerts beg for attention and deadlines loom—the epitome of stress, and a common scene in businesses today. What if amidst all this chaos there was a way to lower employees’ blood pressure and stress level, improve moods and increase productivity, all without leaving the office? The solution comes with fur and four legs: a pet-friendly workplace. A few minutes spent rubbing Fido’s belly or petting Fluffy relieves stress, can fuel creativity and unity, as well as decrease absenteeism and increase productivity, according to an American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA) poll. In the study 75 million Americans indicated having pets in the workplace makes people happier and 70 million said they believe it reduces stress. Managing employee stress is important considering it fuels employee absenteeism, diminishes morale, increases burnout and results in significant loss of productivity and resources. A preliminary study published in the International Journal of Workplace Health Management found “dogs in the workplace may buffer the impact of stress during the workday for their owners and make the job more 8

satisfying for those with whom they come into contact.” A preliminary study by Randolph T. Barker, Ph.D., professor of management at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Business confirms the Journal and APPMA poll findings—employees as a whole, even those who do not have pets, had higher job satisfaction when pets were present in the workplace. Supporters say workplace pets reduce stress among owners who worry about home-alone dogs, are a calming presence for non-owners and help employees form relationships. Pets offer an easy conversation topic: what breed of dog is that? How old? Does he do any tricks? These four-legged companions can help break down barriers and create and strengthen relationships. The VCU study determined pets were a “communication energizer”: “Dogs in the office tended to spark conversations between those with and without pets, and people who didn’t typically talk to one another were now more engaged with dogs in the office,” said Barker. Other benefits that spill over into a pet-friendly workplace are exercise and taking much needed breaks throughout the day. In a recent New York Times article, James A. Levine, a professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic said, “Workers don’t take enough breaks—especially breaks involving moment.”
Studies show employee productivity generally increases when they take a few breaks throughout the day. The APPMA poll confirmed that idea: 46 million Americans surveyed felt having pets in the workplace creates a more productive work environment, 47 million believed pets fuel creativity and 34 million people said they worked longer hours when their pets are with them at work. What better way to encourage employees to get out from behind the computer and give their eyes a break from the screen than a walk with their furry friends? Extending the health benefits of pets— including decreased blood pressure and lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels—into the work setting may also save companies money on their bottom line. According to the National Institute of Health Technology, people with pets actually make fewer doctor visits, especially for non-serious medical conditions. A 2005 study
published in the British Medical Journal noted “dog owners are better at dealing with stressful events and therefore avoid anxiety-related illnesses.” With regards to employee benefits like health insurance, pet-friendly policies offer an appealing, free perk for companies forced to scale back their benefits due to the economy. According to the APPMA study, one in five U.S. companies now allows pets at work. “More people are realizing the importance of pets in the workplace. Pets are becoming more of a welcome addition and proving to be beneficial to employee well-being and office culture,” said APPMA President, Bob Vetere. Considering pet ownership health benefits carry over into the workplace and in many cases lead to increased productivity and employee camaraderie, it’s no wonder the number of pet-friendly organizations continues to grow. “Pet presence may serve as a low-cost,
wellness intervention readily available to many organizations and may enhance organizational satisfaction and perceptions of support,” Barker said. “Of course, it is important to have policies in place to ensure only friendly, clean and wellbehaved pets are present,” Barker advised. Companies should be mindful of employees with pet phobias or allergies. Organizations eager to create a pet-friendly policy need to check with their insurance provider about coverage and draw on resources from agencies like Pet Sitter’s International—the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters and the agency that initiated Take Your Dog To Work Day® (TYDTWDay®) back in 1999. TYDTWDay® was created to celebrate the great companions dogs make, highlight the canine-human bond and encourage adoption from humane societies, animal shelters and breed rescues.

Raeanne Cook, RN, BSN, Mother/Baby Unit, was named preceptor of the year by the University of South Florida. Radiology & Imaging Specialists Is the first in Polk County to offer Positron Emission Mammography (PEM) technology to patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. The new PEM scanner is a high-resolution breast PET system that shows the location as well as the metabolic phase of cancerous cells. It allows physicians to see cancer as small as a grain of rice and the ability to distinguish between benign and malignant lesions.

The world markets continue to fluctuate in response to the most recent updates on China, Europe and the US. As expected, China slightly bested their growth target with a 7.6% GDP growth while the US and European central banks each had meetings set for the first week in August. For the US, not much action is expected however the Fed may hint towards their intentions for keeping interests rates low beyond 2013. European Central Bank president Mario Draghi had previously released a statement that he would do “whatever it takes� to save the euro, and the markets are eagerly waiting to see how that statement is translated into action. In the US, widespread drought has triggered a jump in agricultural commodity prices as markets are anticipating a
significant supply shock. With corn at $8.05/bushel and wheat at $9.03/ bushel, it is likely that consumers will begin to feel the cost increase at the grocery stores and to a lesser extent at the pump. While household income increased in June, consumer spending remained flat as many consumers continue to build up savings/reduce debt. We continue to have a “chicken and egg� problem between consumers and businesses, with consumers waiting on businesses to increase hiring and production before they increase spending and businesses waiting on consumers to increase spending before they ramp up hiring and production. Turning to Polk County, a reduced citrus supply and the carbendazim scare have lead to high
prices for orange juice, both the fromconcentrate and not-from-concentrate (NFC) varieties. While the higher prices for the frozen concentrated orange juice has lead to a reduction in sales and revenue, the NFC sales have remained steady month over month as of July 7 despite a price increase of 4.7%. This is due to the relative inelasticity of the typical NFC buyer as compared to the typical fromconcentrate buyer. The Polk Progress monitors citrus concentrate movement as a measure of the citrus productivity in the area. For Q1 2012, citrus experienced an uptick of 14% over the previous 2 quarters and this is forecasted to tick even higher for Q2 2012. This bodes well for the concentrate market as sales should increase as prices come down slightly.

We’re all familiar with First Dog “Bo” Obama, a Portuguese water dog, or Ronald and Nancy Reagan’s King Charles Cavalier “Rex”, but these pets can be more than just a politician’s best friend. These pets wield political power and present the picture of a politician that is as common an individual as you or me. Evidence has proven that presidential pets are an integral part of White House political strategy. Richard Nixon salvaged his political career with the 1952 “Checkers” speech, defiantly telling Americans that he would not return a dog recently given to his family. And who can forget the famous photo of the
Clintons walking with their dog Buddy, shoring up the image of family unity, just one day after the president admitted to having an extramarital relationship? More examples can be found during many political periods, which offers a number of insights into the roles pets play in politics. These ground-level accounts of political life in and around our nation suggest that these pets wield considerable influence. After all, President Garfield named his dog after the most important of presidential powers— Veto. For example, many First Pets have marked their territory
by sitting in on White House meetings. These presidential pets are key White House advisors. George H.W. Bush’s dog Millie regularly attended morning briefings in the Oval Office. Presumably, these pets play an important “watchdog” role in the executive branch, given how closely presidents guard access to the Oval Office and how eagerly advisers jockey for position in presidential meetings. We can’t deny the power and comfort these pets serve their owners in an underappreciated political capacity. Whatever their pedigree, First Pets are unquestionably a
