Chamber’s Schmooze a’Palooza SIZZLES!
This month’s recap of the Schmooze a’Palooza was contributed by Jack Duncan of Radiance Road Marketing. Jack first wrote about the event on his blog, which you can read at radianceroadmarketing.com. Today, I attended my first Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce Schmooze a’Palooza and I am so glad I did! This “power networking” event, held at Florida Southern College in the Eleanor Searle Drawing Room, brought together about 50 of Lakeland’s shakers and movers to promote our businesses – to “sell the sizzle” – and enjoy lunch together. We gathered in the elegant drawing room on the architecturally-awesome FSC campus about 11:30 this morning where a buffet of salad, grilled chicken, roast beef, pasta and steamed veggies awaited us. I started building my power for the event with some cheese and crackers while meeting some of my fellow Lakeland Chamber members and staff – many for the first time since I am a fairly new member. Editor’s note: FSC’s food service is provided by Guest Services, a fellow Chamber member.

Keiser University’s Director of Student Services Ryan Reis joined us as well, and we got to talk about helping students develop practical business experience through internship and portfolio development with Lakeland companies. I taught at [then] Keiser College in Melbourne, FL and am really excited about mentoring local students.
At the Schmooze a’ Palooza, each attendee gets to stand up and give a 30second “elevator-pitch” for their business to the crowd. It’s a great way to hone your presentation skills! I enjoyed watching my fellow Chamber members give their pitches. The event gave me a chance to hear local enterprises’ marketing messages and get to know some of the people that are active in the business community. It’s a real whirl to go through almost 50 marketing pitches in less than an hour! In the marketing world, you are competing against so many messages for attention

As a local internet marketing consultant, I analyze marketing messages for a living. As a prospective consumer, I want to know what’s in it for me as quickly as possible. This was a wonderful way to take a look at what I do – and how I present my business to prospects. After all, my job is to get your BEST prospects to visit your website and BUY your products and services. I had better be able to deliver a clear, compelling message myself! If you’d like a few tips you can use to develop or hone your 30-second elevator pitch email me and I’ll get those out to you. It really is a vital skill for anyone who needs to explain what your business does. I’ll be working on my elevator pitch to make the best impression – to make it sizzle – at ALL of the events and encounters here in Lakeland this year.

EMERGE Lakeland members attended the organization’s annual meeting on November 12th at the Sorosis Building. Members heard a brief recap of 2009 and learned about 2010 initiatives. November Small Business of the Month Award presented For nearly two decades, Baron Realty, Inc. operated nearly anonymously. Founder and Broker, Tom Petcoff and his wife (Licensed Agent) Sally, formed the small company and endured the licensing process in order to better manage their residential real estate holdings. The first acquisition was a small house facing foreclosure off of Combee Road in Lakeland. The Petcoff’s joined by two long time family friends formed a small partnership and scraped together $2,000.00 to cover the down payment and closing costs on a rundown single family home. So began a journey that ultimately grew into a family business which now manages more than 500,000 square feet of office and retail space in Florida and Georgia.
Baron believes that it is vital to be involved in the community and therefore the family is involved in numerous civic and charitable organizations. Cory Petcoff serves on the board of directors of the Peace River Center and the Polk Theatre and is a member of the vestry at All Saints Episcopal Church. Cory Petcoff, now President, graduated from Stetson and entered the banking industry in Charlotte, North Carolina. Using his special skills in finance, he worked on the special assets section of a major national bank. From there, he moved to an Atlanta company where Cory was an analyst for a firm that exclusively managed the billion dollar portfolios of the once great Lehman Brothers. He developed extensive background in real estate investment analysis, property management, leasing, and contract compliance. In 2003, Cory joined the family company and quickly earned his Florida Real Estate Broker’s License as well as his Property and Casualty Insurance License. He serves as the commercial real estate consultant and manager to multiple insurance companies who have diversified their investment portfolios through high quality investment grade commercial real estate.

Tigers announce 2010 Spring Training schedule Three visits from New York Yankees highlight schedule DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced the club’s exhibition game schedule for 2010 Spring Training in Lakeland, FL.
National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies on March 12 and March 20. Tickets for the 2010 spring exhibition season will be priced at two separate levels. The first set is for premium games, which include all games against the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees and all Friday, Saturday and Sunday games. The second price level is for the remainder of the schedule. Premium game ticket prices range from $11-22, while the ticket prices for the remainder of games range from $8-19.
Next spring will mark the Tigers 74th season at “TigerTown” in Lakeland, extending the longest-standing relationship between a major league team and a current Spring Training host city. The 2010 spring season marks the club’s 45th consecutive season of exhibition play at Joker Marchant Stadium. The Tigers will begin the exhibition schedule on Tuesday, March 2 as the club battles Florida Southern College in the annual matchup against the Moccasins. The club opens the home portion of the Grapefruit League schedule against the Toronto Blue Jays at Joker Marchant Stadium on Thursday, March 4.
Full season ticket packages for the 2010 Tigers Spring Training exhibition season are on sale now at the Joker Marchant Stadium ticket office, via phone at (863) 686-8075 or by visiting www.tigers.com. Fans may also now purchase partial season ticket plans of five-or-more games by calling (863) 686-8075. Attendees were ushered onto campus with style and entered into a beautiful scene of lights and greenery. With tables and tables of beautiful and delicious foods, the food service department intrigued the crowd with a tasty tour around the world. As the networking and introductions got under way, John Kautz welcomed everyone to the campus and encouraged tours. After he accepted the plaque of appreciation, the development staff offered tickets to the annual Leadership Forum’s small group luncheons with nationally recognized speakers. An urban planning and policy expert, Dr. Lang focuses on suburban studies; demographic and spatial analysis; metropolitan governance; the “built environment”; and other issues of environmental psychology. He is a director of the Metropolitan Institute at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and is research director for the Brookings Mountain West Initiative with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Tribute to Mayor Fletcher The Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce would like to recognize Mayor Buddy Fletcher as he retires after 18 years of dedicated leadership and service to our City and Chamber. During ceremonies at their December meeting, the Chamber’s Board of Directors presented Buddy with a plaque honoring him as “Chairman Emeritus” of Ribbon Cuttings. As Mayor, Buddy has served on the Chamber Board and cut more ribbons at new business openings than we can count. He always made that business owner feel special, and made an effort to learn as much as possible about their business so he could tell others of their specialty and accomplishments.
