When my son was 6 weeks old, I decided to become a runner. 7 years later, a daughter, 5 marathons, 7 half marathons, 4 breast cancer 3-days and a ton of 5 and 10Ks, I call myself one. I’m an amateur runner at best, but I love every minute of it. It’s my hobby, my passion, my saving grace. Running for a cause in the Komen Race for the Cure makes it even more gratifying.

Passion, I am told, is the secret ingredient to anything successful. So how do you find your passion?

I think it’s similar to when you can’t remember someone’s name. Then at 10 p.m., while watching an Annie Lebovitz documentary, BAM, there it is. Passion plops in your lap whether you are ready for it or not. It’s what keeps your mind racing at night when you should be sleeping and what drives you to get out of bed everyday. Some of us have already found our passion, yet most of us are still looking for it. Recently I was daydreaming (I do this often) and was taking a mental picture of all

the people who have made their mark in our wonderful community; those who appear to have that something extra. Soon I started to realize almost everyone I was thinking of I have been introduced to through EMERGE Lakeland. Our orange logo and energy are spreading across this town, passionate to make a difference. EMERGE Lakeland is open to everyone. It is a professionals group ages 21-42 and for only a $50 membership fee. EMERGE is parented by the Chamber and

the United Way so you know it’s a “cool” organization to join. After seven years, EMERGE Lakeland is proud to be such a strong organization with more than 200 members and just about that many companies represented. Be part of that flood of orange across Lakeland; invest in the passions of our young professionals. On March 22, EMERGE Lakeland will host its annual Casino Night at Preservation Hall in downtown. This free event is a great way to find out more about

EMERGE, introduce new employees to the group, and begin down the path to identifying your passion.

This technology has blossomed in both Europe and Japan and we are just beginning to see it in the United States. With nearly all mobile phone sales being smart phones, the emphasis of using mobile site friendly QR codes will also expand.

In today’s world, having a commerce site that doesn’t have user ratings could actually prove to be a detriment to sales. Brands and businesses will need to place user ratings and accept open feedback on their actual Web sites. User ratings will become so common that marketers should expect to find them woven into most digital experiences.

Social functions have become so commonplace in all digital media that the thought of not having socially-enhanced experiences will seem illogical. Digital media by its very nature is inherently social. I believe that during the next year businesses will again refer to their interactions as digital media and not social media.

N ew S oci a l S e a rc h E n g ines : Google’s Social Search will change the way we interact with search engines by pushing relevant content from our personal networks to the front of search results, making them more personalized. The importance of digital-influencer marketing will increase significantly.

For example: the contacts book in your phone will link to Facebook and Twitter to show real-time updates on what the contact is doing, real-time reviews from friends and associates will appear in GPS-based mapping services, and socially enabled CRM will change the way we manage business relationships.

This year may be the most significant year we have ever seen in the growth of digital marketing and it’s impact to business. We are fortunate to live in a community that is so well connected and can lead the way in building a business model for the future.

This Month Go Red for Women Know the risk factors for heart disease that you can control, and make heart-healthy choices to reduce those risks. High Blood Pressure. More than half of all adults with high blood pressure are women. This condition can increase your risk of stroke and heart attack. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so talk to your healthcare professional about your risk. To prevent or manage high blood pressure, eat a healthy diet low in sodium, saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol.

Smoking. Smoking cigarettes is the most preventable major risk factor of heart disease, and it increases your risk two to four times that of non smokers. Thousands of nonsmokers, including Infants and children, are harmed by exposure to cigarette smoke. It’s never too late to quit!

High Cholesterol. 44 percent of American adults have cholesterol levels that are too high. The higher your total blood cholesterol, the greater your risk of coronary heart disease. Your body makes all the cholesterol it needs. Take steps to lower your cholesterol levels by losing unnecessary weight and limiting the saturated fats, Trans fats and cholesterol you eat.

Physical inactivity. Lack of physical activity increases your risk of coronary heart disease. Aim to get 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week.

Being Obese or overweight. More than 149 million American adults are overweight, and 75 million are obese. If you have excess body fat—especially at the waist— you’re more likely to develop heart disease and stroke. Work with your doctor to determine your healthy weight and develop a plan to achieve or maintain a healthy weight.

Diabetes. Compared to women without diabetes, women with diabetes have from two to four time’s higher death rates from heart disease. A family history of diabetes can significantly increase the risk of developing diabetes. To prevent or manage diabetes, watch your weight and diet, be active, avoid smoke and secondhand, and talk to your healthcare professional about your family history of diabetes.

There are other risk factors to be aware of—talk to your doctor about how your age, race and heredity may affect your risk for heart disease. Reasons to Make It Your Mission Heart disease and stroke are the greatest health threats to women of all ethnic backgrounds, but only 21 percent realize it. 6

Consider these facts: Heart disease is still the No. 1 killer of women age 20 and older, killing about one woman every minute. • More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. • While 1 in 30 American women die of breast cancer, about 1 in 3 dies of cardiovascular disease. • 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. • 80 percent of cardiac events in women could be prevented if women made the right choices for their hearts involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking. • Hispanic women are likely to develop heart disease 10 years earlier than nonHispanic white women • African-American females are at greater risk and have higher death rates from heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases than white females.

Paul knew he was not feeling well, but a doctor’s visit just wasn’t in the budget for him. With no health insurance, he’d just have to get over it on his own. Paul’s health worried Nancy, one of his friends from church. After services one week, she vowed to find him some help. Nancy called several places and found out about Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine, offering medical care for Lakeland’s working uninsured. It took a little convincing to get Paul to make an appointment. Like many people, he couldn’t believe there was a place that provided high quality health care at no cost. When he entered the exam room on his first visit, Tyrone Hodge, MA, and LVIM volunteer thought to himself, “now there’s a dead man walking through the door.” Nancy’s concerns were well founded. Paul’s condition was so critical that Colleen Collins, ARNP, sent him directly to Lakeland Regional Medical Center after recording his vitals. Paul spent the next 11 days in the hospital treating his most acute

8

conditions. He was being treated for heart failure and pneumonia, very high blood pressure and high blood sugar. After running cardiac tests, his cardiologist told him that at some point he had experienced a heart attack. “It became a life changing experience for me and also a wakeup call,” said Paul about the news. Upon release from the hospital, he returned to LVIM to treat the various chronic diseases that had been diagnosed. Paul learned that high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity are three causes of congestive heart failure. Through LVIM’s Prescription Assistance Program, he was able to get all the medications prescribed to him by Ms. Collins for free. He began diligently taking all of his prescriptions, eating better, began exercising and living a healthier lifestyle. One of the medications Paul was prescribed to treat his congestive heart failure was the anticoagulant Warfarin. Warfarin can be a dangerous medicine if not closely monitored, so Paul attended LVIM’s Warfarin Clinic

VOL’ U N’ T EER A PERSON WHO GIVES FREELY OF THEIR TIME TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS

to manage the medication used to prevent blood clots. After about four months Paul was well on his way to recovery and had a much better outlook on life. Although Paul no longer receives medical care at LVIM because he is now insured, he still stays in touch. He and Tyrone, the medical assistant who thought he saw “death” walk through the door, connected through their faith and stay in touch whenever they can. Paul says that it was hard leaving because of all the great care he received from Ms. Collins, Tyrone, and all the volunteers at LVIM. “How do you leave behind the people who literally saved your life?” Paul is just one of the many success stories from Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine over the years. LVIM is celebrating its 11th anniversary on February 14, 2012. Since opening its doors, it has provided more than 300,000 patient visits, filled more than 250,000 prescriptions and provided more than 110,000 lab, radiology and screening tests. All of this medical care could not have been provided without the kindness of local businesses and residents. From day one, LVIM has had the financial support of this great community who saw the need of many of its neighbors who could not afford the healthcare they needed to stay healthy, working and caring for their families. Because of that generosity, many lives have been changed forever – just ask Paul. Tyrone Hodge, Medical-Assistant and Colleen Collins, ARNP Lvim.net

FHSAA Championship Month Creates a Win for Lakeland’s Economy! Each year high school volleyball, wrestling and basketball teams from across the state battle for their respective state titles at The Lakeland Center bringing thousands of fans and supporters to the area with them. The 2011 tournament season was no exception making area merchants the real winners by creating more than 7.9 million dollars in spending throughout Polk County. Lakeland is honored to once again host the 2012 Florida High School Championships during February and March of 2012. This year the final schedule will include eight classifications rather than the six which have been presented in the past. This change will bring additional teams, fans and economic impact to our City! The 2012 dates are: Feb 17-18 Feb 22-25 Feb 29 - March 31

FHSAA Wrestling Championships FHSAA Girls’ Basketball Championships FHSAA Boys’ State Basketball Championships

The Lakeland Center The Lakeland Center The Lakeland Center

These dates are significant for our community as host to many teams, fans, media and special guests. Look for full lodging locations, bustling restaurants and exciting sports spectator opportunities throughout the month of February and March!

Be a Lakeland Ambassador Be a Lakeland Ambassador with the FHSAA championships this month, the Championship Committee is looking to provide a higher level of service to visiting teams during their visit to Lakeland. This year, the suggestion was made to provide a local “Tournament Team Host” or a local volunteer to act as an ambassador for each visiting team. This volunteer host would act as an informational source, greeting the team upon arrival, assisting with the logistics of their visit, attending any games with that team and assisting with their departure. Folks who choose to participate as a volunteer host will be provided a sport shirt with the local Championship Committee logo and designation as a Team Host. The Committee is in search of at least 12 community members to volunteer as hosts in order to build a successful program. For additional information on this program, or to volunteer your time, please contact Jackie Johnson at (863) 688-8551, Ext. 223 or JackieJ@LakelandChamber.com.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to volunteer on behalf of the Chamber and the City of Lakeland to make our guests feel welcome! 18

publ i c p o l icy: F l o r i da key issues This year, the 2012 Legislative Session will focus on several key issues. The Chamber released its 2012 Legislative Priorities in January, a copy of which may be found at LakelandChamber.com/BusinessResource.

Yadira Holmes

While the Chamber remains vigilant on all matters listed in the Legislative Priority Statement, in recent weeks, the Chamber has become more actively engaged in two prominent issues- redistricting and internet sales tax collection.

Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce Vice President, Public Affairs

Redistricting Every ten years, after each Census, the Florida Legislature is required to redraw the districts from which voters elect their public officials. The districts are drawn to accommodate population changes and to ensure equal representation among the district populations. Both the Florida Senate and Florida House released initial proposed maps in December 2011. While the Lakeland Chamber appreciates the work required to draw the district lines, there was considerable concern over the prospect of losing the ability to have a sitting State Senator in the City of Lakeland as noted in the Senate Proposal Plan: S000S9004- FLSenate.gov/Session/ Redistricting/Plan/s000s9004. This proposed version provided that the City of Lakeland would be divided into three separate Senate districts. Of these three, the majority of Lakeland’s population would reside within District 21, which stretches from Manatee County into Polk County. Based on the numbers, it was highly likely that this seat would be represented by someone residing in the Manatee County/coastal region. As such, this would present a significant challenge to the interests of Lakeland and surrounding Polk County. The City of Lakeland represents a diverse population that shares common social and economic interests and should be included within a district that allows for direct representation from the area. The interests and concerns of Manatee County, the coast and islands are very different than the interests and concerns of this community. Therefore the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce, in evaluating the proposed Senate version of the maps and in recognizing the perceived challenges the district configurations could have on Lakeland and greater Polk County, submitted a letter to Senate Redistricting Chairman, Don Gaetz, on December 22, 2011 requesting modification of the proposed Senate version. As of 12/30/2011, version S000S9008 was released suggesting some modification to Lakeland’s district configuration. It is important to note that the redistrcting process is lengthy and will go through a variety of versions before reaching a final conclusion. While this was a preliminary proposal, the Chamber Board strongly values the need to represent the best interests of the local community. As the process continues, the Chamber will keep you abreast of any changes and foreseeable challenges into the future and will continue to advocate on your behalf. 20

internet sales tax With the growth of Internet retail sales, many local and small retail businesses have begun to question the collection of sales tax on Internet purchases. While paying sales tax on an internet purchase is required, there is no mechanism for which the State can enforce collection of this revenue from Internet sales. Online-only retailers are able to utilize a sales-tax loophole that puts brickand-mortar businesses at a significant disadvantage. The Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce supports leveling the playing field between brick-and-mortar businesses and online-only retailers. The LACC has submitted a resolution indicating our support for closing any loopholes which allow this action and securing a mechanism for collection of sales tax already required. Currently, the Florida Senate Tax and Finance Committee are working on a bill to address this issue. Essential to this process is the understanding that this is NOT a new tax issue, but rather a collection of an existing tax issue. As a note, this measure is also currently supported by the Florida Chamber, Florida Retail Federation and local Chambers across the State. Should you wish to learn more about this issue, please visit MyMainStreetFlorida.com.

] For more information on any of these issues, please do not hesitate to contact our Public Affairs office at (863) 688-8551 ext. 241 or via email at yholmes@lakelandchamber. com.

B y L a rr y P ere z Studio Monroe - TheStudioMonroe.com

In June 2011, I relocated my family to Lakeland after spending most of my life in the Kansas City area. My primary focus was to find a home in an area that provided a great family atmosphere, as well as an area of Florida that would allow me to create greater and more unique opportunities for the growth of my photography business, started in 2006. Prior to opening the photography business, I was a managing partner in a Nissan franchise for one of the larger dealer groups in the country. I found myself with sole custody of my three children, and decided that I needed to reinvent myself outside of corporate America. The typical exciting day in the world of Studio Monroe consists of many different things. I work a little bit each day on finding ways to push my work to new levels. I’m never satisfied. I am very driven to become one of the top wedding photographers in the industry. Take a look at my work and you will find that the slogan for Studio Monroe is in perfect alignment with my style of photography. Distinctive. Natural. Fun. You’ll certainly be able to see that I am inspired by different eras with some of my imagery seeming almost cinematic. I specialize in weddings, both local and destination, and digital composite artwork in the music industry. My most recent undertaking is leading me into the world of educating photographers to assist them in growing and developing workflows within their businesses. I’m honored to be sponsored by two of the most reputable solutions provider companies available to photographers. Together, we have worked to develop a platform where photographers can learn about topics related to the industry. At the moment, my presentations are centered on relationships and communication with clients as well as the importance of installing a sales workflow into their businesses. These presentations have lead to opportunities to consult via Skype and FaceTime with photographers oneon-one concerning their business. I invite you to visit my Web site to browse through some of my work. I LOVE what I do, and I often wonder why I didn’t do it much sooner. There is a tremendous difference when you wake up every day and your passion is the driver for your accomplishments. 22
