Passing Time I

t seems like 2013 has blown by at the speed of light. I’m just getting used to writing 2013 on paper; now within a matter of weeks, yet another year evaporates. Where does the time go?! The days, weeks, months and years march on no matter how hard we try holding on to the present, but I can tell you one region of the country where the clock’s hands appear motionless: Northeastern Ohio, including the communities of Geneva-onthe-Lake, Ashtabula, Conneaut and Mentor. This area, famous for its historic covered bridges, rustic cottages and relaxed, lakefront resorts, seems forever frozen in time — in a good way, that is. The feelings of nostalgia overwhelm while walking Geneva-on-the-Lake’s famous “Strip,” which boasts antique shops, arcade games, waterslides, and a collection of unique and tasty restaurants. Check out Jodie Jacobs’ story about this interesting, historic and fun area (p. 44). She and her husband clearly enjoyed their time there, and I expect you will, too. Don’t fret if your boat is already stored for winter; make it a road trip instead. There’s

nothing like northeast Ohio in the fall. Think covered bridges, colorful fall foliage, Lake Erie, and evenings spent on the porch of a Frank Lloyd Wright B&B, sipping a glass of the finest local wine (the area is known for its selection of incredible wineries). If it’s boating’s latest and greatest you’re after, our 2014 Buyer’s Guide (p. 21) offers a selection of new boat models. You’ll notice many of the offerings are shorter and beamier, with more amenities. This is the current trend, as the marine industry adjusts to expensive fuel prices and the still weak economy. The big sellers are still pontoons and bowriders, as well as used boats of all sizes. The Buyer’s Guide also showcases products that will make your time on the water more enjoyable. As 2013 winds swiftly to a close, I would like to, on behalf of all of us here at Lakeland Boating, wish you a very warm, healthy and happy holiday season! See you in January!

Memories of ZIPPER I’ve got to comment on what a thrill it was to see ZIPPER pictured in Kim Lunman’s article entitled “History Carved Out of Wood” that appeared in your September 2013 issue. I was the dockmaster at the Grosse Pointe Club (known as the “Little Club”) in 1972, when John W. Stroh, then 79 years old, was having the new-old ZIPPER built by Les Staudacher (of hydroplane fame) in Bay City, Michigan. Uncle John, as he was known at the club, invited me to his home to show me the plans for the new boat. He told me that he’d had the plans since 1937 and finally decided to have her built. When the boat arrived around mid-summer 1973, she looked like a piano; the finish was impeccable, and there wasn’t a single butt-joint in the planking. They were all scarf joints about 30 inches long. But the curious thing about the boat was that she had the mast from a Chris-Craft cruiser and aluminum windshield frames. When I asked Mr. Stroh why the new style mast and windshields, he said “We had to start saving money at some point, and these were production items.” He was notoriously frugal at times and drove an older AMC station wagon to work well into his late seventies. The interior was pure 1937, with linoleum flooring excepting an electric refrigerator to keep the Stroh’s ice cream — and a little beer — nice and cold. A side note as to the personalities of both John and his wife, Lou. My wife was pregnant with our son, born in September, as was a friend of ours. The girls walked down the dock to see me and say hello, and the Strohs were leaving the harbor on ZIPPER for a day cruise. When Lou saw the two girls, pregnant bellies clearly visible, she made the captain turn around, dock the boat and deliver two deck chairs to my wife and her friend. John and Lou Stroh were as nice a couple as you could find, given their wealth and power. I knew that ZIPPER had been donated to the Antique Boat Museum, but hadn’t thought about her and her owners much until I read Kim’s article. She looks the same and as well cared for as when I knew her. Thanks to you and Kim Lunman for such a nice article. Boy, I love your magazine! —Jim Hart Harsens Island, MI

Mercury Marine Enertia ECO Propellers Save fuel — and the environment — with the new Enertia ECO propellers from Mercury Marine. This propeller was specifically designed for highhorsepower, outboard-powered boats, offering boaters a 10 percent increase in fuel economy at cruising speeds. “As marina gasoline prices have continued to rise, customers are increasingly focused on fuel economy,” says Jared Reichenberger, Mercury Propellers brand manager. “We realized an appreciable fuel economy gain could be found in the design of the propeller itself.” The 10 percent fuel economy gain boaters get with the Enertia ECO translates into actual dollars, as the typical offshore boater averages nearly 100 hours on the water each year. And at today’s gas prices, this propeller alone will save more than $550 per year — or more than $5,500 over 10 years. The Enertia ECO also helps extend a boat’s range, lengthening the time between fill-ups. The propellers will be available in right- and lefthand rotation across four pitches — 17, 19. 21 and 23 inches — beginning in January 2014. For more information, visit mErcurymarinE.com.

Don’t leave the dock without making a safety list and checking it twice — on your smartphone, that is. The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) developed a boating safety app called “Boat Essentials-USCG Safety Gear.” It’s essentially a safety checklist intended to help boaters identify the required and recommended safety items

to stow on board their boats. ABYC took home an Innovation Award for the app in the “Safety Equipment” category at the International Boatbuilders’ Exhibition & Conference, held this past September in Louisville, Kentucky. The app can be downloaded for free at the Apple iTunes store online. A printed checklist is also available and can be obtained by calling ABYC at 410-990-4460. Scotiadoc Remains Discovered on Bottom of Lake Superior After more than 60 years resting on the bottom of Lake Superior’s Thunder Bay, a group of shipwreck hunters recently found the remains of the freighter Scotiadoc, which sank more than 850 feet below the water’s surface in 1953, making it the deepest shipwreck ever discovered in the Great Lakes, according to a recent report in Minnesota’s St. Paul Pioneer Press (twincitieS.com).

Raymarine eci-100 Universal engine and control interface These days, boaters are looking to simplify things on board. They want seamless integration, and that’s exactly what the new ECI-100 Universal Engine and Control Interface from Raymarine provides. It’s an innovative device that bridges the gap between engine instrumentation, drive-by-wire propulsion systems and Raymarine network navigation systems in a small, inexpensive and easy-to-install package. The ECI-100 collects and connects engine information to give boaters simple and immediate access to engine performance data, fuel consumption and alarms via a full range of customizable information screens on Raymarine multifunction displays. The device is simple to fit. Each ECI-100 comes with a standard DeviceNet port that connects directly into the industry-standard NMEA2000 or J1939 Engine Data Bus used by major marine manufacturers. And with a suggested retail price of just $299, the ECI-100 makes engine and navigation integration an affordable reality for any size boat. For more information, visit RaymaRine.com. boats

According to the article, Scotiadoc was initially launched in 1904 as the Martin Mullen, making frequent trips to and from Duluth, Minnesota-area ports. In 1947, it was sold and renamed Scotiadoc. The vessel departed Port Arthur, Ontario with a crew of 29 and nearly 260,000 bushels of wheat on the afternoon of June 20, 1953. In thick fog and driving rain, Scotiadoc collided with another passing freighter, the 451-foot Burlington. It was determined that both boats made crucial navigating errors that resulted in the accident, according to the Pioneer Press report. Burlington plowed into the starboard side of Scotiadoc near the stern. Burlington survived the crash (even plucking some of the Scotiadoc survivors out of the icy lake waters to safety), but Scotiadoc did not. She descended into the dark depths of Lake Superior until her discovery in September.

Hinckley Announces Bermuda 50 The Hinckley Company and Tripp Design have announced creation of the all-new Hinckley Bermuda 50, an advanced performance sloop. The sailing yacht is the modern-day evolution of its predecessor, the Bermuda 40. On deck and below, the Bermuda 50 embodies all the design and finish qualities that have characterized a Hinckley yacht in the past, but with crisp, modern lines. This new Hinckley will define dual-purpose sailing for generations to come, in much the same way as its older sister, the William H. Tripp Jr.-designed Bermuda 40, did when it first came to life a half-century ago. The versatile Bermuda 50 can easily be handled by a couple but will also accommodate a family for safe, luxurious performance cruising. For more information, visit hinckLeyyachtS.com.

Boat Lost in Boston Bombing Shootout Replaced

David Henneberry, the man whose boat was destroyed in a dramatic shootout outside his Watertown, Massachusetts home while authorities were in hot pursuit of one of the infamous Boston Marathon bombing suspects, has finally purchased a new boat, according to a recent ABC New report on abcnews.com. Henneberry used $50,000 the public raised for him through sources such as Facebook and Crowdtilt to buy the new boat, which is a pre-owned 22-foot Seahawk, similar to the one pictured. Henneberry discovered Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev hiding inside the covered boat he stored in the yard outside his home. He called authorities upon finding Tsarnaev, and a standoff/shootout ensued. “You just want to ramble on you feel so grateful,” Henneberry was quoted as saying upon purchasing the new boat. “After such a bad thing happened to us and the people of Boston, it was wonderful to see that. It was humbling. It restores your faith in people.” Henneberry named the new boat Beth Said Yes, in honor of his wife, Beth. The previous boat was named Slip Away. “That’s fitting isn’t it?,” Henneberry told ABC News. “We decided we were just going to let Slip Away slip away.”

Summing Up Surveys What to look for in a marine survey.

A

t some point during his or her on-water career, every boater will require a marine survey. Buyers commission surveys to assess the condition of a prospective purchase and to obtain financing and insurance, while boat owners need them to obtain insurance or file a claim in the event of an accident. Here’s a rundown of the four most common types of marine surveys and what to expect when the surveyor comes a-knockin’. 1. Condition and value survey. A condition and value survey (C&V for short) is likely the most comprehensive assessment a vessel will receive. It provides an informed professional opinion of a vessel’s condition and fair market value. It includes an in-depth visual inspection of structural integrity, safety equipment and all other miscellaneous onboard systems (electrical, propulsion, sanitation, potable water, navigation, etc.) as well as an out-of-water hull inspection and sea trial. The written report of a C&V survey provides detailed information on the vessel, as well as a “Recommendations” section listing required safety, maintenance and repair items that need addressing to bring the vessel into compliance with recognized industry standards, laws and good marine practices. 2. Insurance survey. An insurance survey is conducted to assist underwriters in determining a vessel’s condition and insurability for initial policy issuance or renewal. The primary focus of an insurance survey is structural integrity, safety and inspection of system installations as per National Fire Protection Association

Capt. Frank Lanier is an award-winning journalist, boat maintenance guru and owner of Capt. F.K. Lanier & Associates, Marine Surveyors and Consultants (captfklanier.com).

A thorough inspection by a competent marine surveyor is a buyer’s best defense against unwittingly making someone else’s problems their own. Signs (such as the waterline shown at right) can be an indication of sinking or flood damage.

(NFPA) and American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) guidelines, etc. Safety gear is inspected and noted for compliance with federal requirements, while pertinent identification information (equipment models, serial numbers, etc.) is recorded for future reference, valuation and claims adjustment. The content of a typical insurance survey’s written report can be very similar to that of a C&V survey, providing detailed vessel information, discrepancies and recommendations. 3. Appraisal inspection. Appraisal inspections are conducted to determine the fair market value of a vessel for financing, estate settlements, donations and legal cases. As the focus here is to simply provide the surveyor’s overall impression of the vessel’s condition, an appraisal inspection is a less in-depth inspection, typically lasting an hour or two (depending on vessel size and complexity). The written report will contain basic vessel information, general comments on overall condition and an estimated fair market value. 4. Damage inspection. The purpose of a damage survey is to assess the extent of damage in the event of an accident, recommend repairs, estimate repair cost, and determine probable cause if needed. Boat owners should remember that when filing a damage claim, the surveyor assigned by the underwriter will be representing the insurance company’s interest. As such, owners have the right to hire their own surveyor to inspect damage and make recommendations as to repair techniques and cost estimates. Additionally (depending on the policy), underwriters may even pay for this independent surveyor, subject to deductibles and the validity of the claim. Although we’ve listed the four basic types of surveys and defined the general scope and purpose of each, there is some blurring of the lines separating them. For example, a condition and value survey (due to its depth and scope of inspection) can serve double or even triple duty, providing perspective buyers an assessment of a vessel, while at the same time satisfying financing and insurance requirements once the vessel is purchased.

Finding a marine surveyor

BOAT ROLL

As marine surveying is neither regulated nor licensed by any governmental agency, it’s important to research potential surveyors to determine who can best serve your needs. Reputation, word of mouth recommendation and viewing sample survey reports are all part of the selection process. Membership organizations such as the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS) and National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) are also good places to start your search.

How much will it cost? Survey prices vary, depending on the survey requested, type of vessel, hull material, age, complexity of the systems, and specific requirements for the survey. Surveys can be charged by the job, by the hour or on a per-foot basis, the cost of which can vary greatly from one area to the next. Shop around to get a feel for the going rate in your area, but don’t base your decision solely on the lowest cost; final selection should include a review of the surveyor’s experience, references, sample surveys, etc.

Imagine total relaxation and comfort while in port or offshore—

providing you and your guests with an onboard experience unlike any other. That is why we engineered the most effective anti-rolling device ever made—the Seakeeper® Gyro. Experience the Seakeeper® Gyro and change your boating experience forever.

How long does it take?

• Eliminates 60-80% of

The length of a survey depends on a number of factors, from the type of survey required to how well the vessel is prepped prior to survey. An appraisal

uncomfortable boat roll • No drag-producing external fins

survey for a typical 40-foot production yacht may last only a few hours, while a condition and value survey for the same vessel could take a full day.

• Simple installation

Can a vessel “fail” a survey? With regards to C&V or insurance surveys, vessels don’t pass or fail. The surveyor simply lists his or her findings and recommendations, after which it’s up to the client to decide whether to purchase the vessel (in the case of a pre-purchase survey), the owner to correct the issues, or the underwriter to provide insurance.

How does one prepare a vessel for survey?

We recently cruised 57 hours straight in 9’ to 11’ swells the entire way, and it was comfortable. At anchor, the system dampens roll by 73%, which is pretty considerable.

Again, this depends on the type of survey to be conducted. For a C&V or insurance survey, ensure the vessel is relatively clean and that all normally accessible compartments and spaces are open and access is unobstructed. Other preparations include providing the ship’s registration or documentation paperwork, or (if the vessel is being sold) removal of all items not included in the sale. Liveaboards have additional obligations to ensure the survey goes smoothly due to the amount of “stuff” typically found onboard. Most surveyors try to be accommodating, but when faced with moving those 20 bags of kitty litter to inspect a space, be prepared to pay for the extra time required to do so.

— ANDR EW GR EGO, CAPTAIN ON 102’ PALMER JOHNSON MY BANYAN

Final things to consider A marine survey is only an opinion and offers no warranty or guarantee of any kind as to the present or future condition of a vessel. A survey report is typically offered as a “snapshot” of a vessel’s condition on a given date and as such has a limited shelf life — one reason it isn’t necessarily in the best interest of, say, a buyer to use a report offered by an owner or broker from a previous survey. Aside from the fact that most survey reports contain wording prohibiting use by second parties, additional problems with the vessel may have developed since the older survey was conducted. LB

Holiday Wish List Cool stuff to ponder for next boating season.

W

inter is a good time to take stock of the previous boating year and look forward to adventures in the season ahead. It’s also an opportunity to get a jump on those pesky boat-related projects that you oh-so-conveniently put off during the summer months when the boat is still in heavy rotation. This month I highlight several products that make great off-season installation projects, or that are just plain cool and perhaps worthy of addition to your boating holiday wish list.

Adaptors The MILBTREC adaptor from Prospec Electronics is a neat WiFi adapter that works with any stereo that has a spare set of phono inputs in the back. About the size of a matchbook, the adaptor is simple to hook up and requires plugging in the phono connections and a suitable 12-volt power supply. After entering the supplied four-digit code into your smartphone or other device, you can wirelessly stream tunes to the stereo. And at a cost of $59.95, it’s a pretty affordable addition to any holiday shopping list. PROSPECELECTRONICS.COM

Navigation Apps Having some form of electronic chart on board has now become the norm rather than the exception. But if you’re looking to get into the game on a budget or just want a backup to your trusty paper charts, check out some of the current cartography that’s available for the iPad. I’ve used the Navionics package for few years now and have been impressed by both its features and ease of use.

Another option is the Jeppesen application, which has a slightly different interface and offers features such as 3D view, compass and a nifty boat legend that you can customize for your specific type of boat. A recent newcomer to the world of marine navigation apps is the Timezero app by Nobletec, which is free to download. The app comes with a chart of Miami built in so you can try it first before downloading charts for your particular cruising area. Access to charts for all of North America is a very reasonable $39.99, making this app exceptional value for money. JEPPESEN.COM, APP.NOBLETEC.COM, NAVIONICS.COM

Antifouling Paints Unless your boat spends most of its time out of the water, you will require some form of antifouling paint. Usually applied in the spring before the boat is launched, this is a job, albeit a bit messy, that can be undertaken by the boat owner. There are a plethora of bottom paints out there, but what is different about Pettit’s Hydrocoat is that it’s a water-based paint and thus contains no nasty VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) that often require users to don a respirator for protection from the smelly solvents. Being water based also means that the paint can be thinned with water should this prove necessary and, of course, brushes and rollers can easily be cleaned at the end of the job rather than having to be thrown away — as is the case with other types of bottom coatings. Hydrocoat is an ablative paint, meaning that it wears away during the season, so there’s less chance of paint layers building up over time. Pettit maintains this paint is suitable for all types of boats — even those that spend large amounts of time out of the water on a trailer. Available in black, blue, green and red, there’s sure to be a color that coordinates with your topsides color. Cost is around $135 per gallon, or you can buy a quart for $58. PETTITPAINT.COM

Air Purifiers

With the holidays fast approaching, how about a bit of bling for your boat? Underwater lights from Aqualuma will assure your boat stands out from the crowd. Unlike many lights, which use halogen or Xenon lamps, Aqualuma uses super bright LEDs. LEDs, short for light-emitting diodes, use far less electricity than their predecessors, and with an estimated life span of 50,000 hours they should never need replacing. Of course, like any underwater lights, their installation requires drilling holes in the boat’s hull, so it’s a project you may want to entrust to an experienced boatyard. This would be considered an advanced DIY project. Available in blue, green and white light, some fishermen swear LEDs attract fish. I can’t attest to this personally, as I’m not a fisherman, but I’ve had some of the blue lights on my boat for a number of years now and they just look cool. They’re a bit on the expensive side, with prices starting at about $350 each, but you’ll undoubtedly be the envy of the marina. AQUALUMA.COM

Keeping your boat smelling sweet during the offseason is important. This usually requires good ventilation, making sure the boat is dry before you put it away (and checking on it periodically during the winter). Some boaters I know swear that putting dryer sheets in cupboards and lockers helps, although having tried this method myself I can’t claim success. It didn’t seem to work for me. Kanberra Gel has a growing list of converts. The solid gel comes in a plastic container that’s intended for placement inside the boat. Makers claim it absorbs harmful and smelly odors, kills mold and other spores, and leaves the boat smelling fresh and clean. Kanberra Gel can be used year round and seems effective; however, bear in mind that you may need to replace the containers during your layup period. Made from tea tree and other essential oils, Kanberra Gel is not only environmentally friendly, but affordable. An 8-ounce container costs $49.99. KANBERRAGEL.COM LB

Stocking Stuffers Useful gifts that won’t break the bank this holiday.

W

hat does one get a boating relative for Christmas? It’s a question that comes up every year at about this time. If cost is no object, then gift ideas are a cinch; but if you’re pinching pennies this holiday season, there are useful — and affordable — electric and electronic items you can pick up for the special boater in your life that will be useful long after the gift-giving season.

Batteries The topic of holiday gift giving always takes me back to the year my four nieces, all under the age of 10 at the time, decided they wanted to buy me a present “with their own money.” My brother told me they had about $12 to spend. On Christmas morning, the nieces gave me their present, charmingly wrapped in nauticalthemed paper. The presentation was about the size of a loaf of bread. Removing the paper revealed a plastic snap-lid box containing a variety of batteries: Watch batteries, camera batteries, electronics backup batteries, and regular AA, AAA, B, C and D batteries. It also contained a 6-volt battery as a spare for an underwater diving light we had on board. This gift was most useful, and, in fact, that battery box became a fixture of our normal boat equipment stash. We topped it off once a year. With more electronics, cell phones and digital cameras than ever before, $20 worth of batteries makes an excellent gift from a child to a boating relative.

Flashlight Another small item that any boater can always use is a good flashlight. A “good” flashlight is one that is at least splash resistant and equipped with an energy efficient bulb so that batteries will last a decent amount of hours. A flashlight gift-giver need never be concerned about someone else giving the exact same gift, because there can never be too many good flashlights on board!

to keep small boat or dingy batteries topped up. Many solar panels are self-regulating and, once installed, they require virtually no maintenance. There are a number of panels on the market today that put out about 5 watts each and in good sunlight will keep a small cruiser’s battery bank charged up. Such a panel can be purchased for about $50. Slightly more powerful 15-watt units are also available that retail for less than $60.

Inverters If you’ve got a couple more bucks to spend, a cruiser with a solid battery bank but without an AC generator might well benefit from a good inverter. Inverters used to sell for about $1 per watt of output; thus a 1500-watt unit cost around $1,500. Nowadays, these units can sell for as little at 25 cents per watt of output (depending on make and features), making them a useful — and much more affordable — holiday gift option.

Camera Accessories A boater who doubles as an avid photographer is easy to buy for. Spare camera batteries and a spare charger are always welcome. So is a good SD card. If the boater has a DSLR camera, another lens is also a great addition to his or her photography equipment cache. Then there are a number of waterproof adventure cameras that capture excellent memories, even in lousy weather. In fact, one of the world’s foremost marine electronics manufacturers has just entered the adventure camera field. Garmin recently released its loaded-with-features action cam series. These cameras are a bit more pricey, retailing for between $299 and $399 depending on the model, but they offer excellent value for money and will satisfy the boater who likes to be “on the cutting edge” of electronic gadget and equipment introductions.

VHF Radio If the boater in your life has older electronics on board, it might be an idea for family members to pool their money this holiday and buy a single, more expensive piece of equipment. A new VHF radio with DSC comes immediately to mind, since a good VHF is one of the best safety items on board a boat. A new antenna for that radio should also be included.

Solar Panels Another useful, inexpensive gift to consider for boating loved ones is a small, low-output solar panel. The smallest of these panels, which cost less than $10, are basically used

A variety of gifts will make boating easier, safer and better for your water-loving loved ones… and many of them don’t cost an arm and a leg! LB

Mercury Marine Joystick Piloting for Outboards

Mercury Marine’s JOystick Piloting for Outboards takes the stress out of docking, maneuvering in tight spaces and operating in less-than-ideal environments by providing boaters 360-degree movement at their fingertips. The intuitive design of the joystick lets anyone — from experienced captains to novice boaters — maneuver large boats with ease and confidence. The system allows an operator to effortlessly move a multiengine, Verado-powered boat in any direction — including sideways, diagonally or spinning on its own axis — with a simple push or twist of a joystick. The operator controls the throttle, shifting and steering with one hand, and the joystick works in conjunction with the independently steered engines to move the boat in the desired direction. No other joystick control system offers the advanced features of the Mercury Joystick Piloting for Outboards, which includes Skyhook digital anchor, VesselView engine information display and an integrated autopilot system. Skyhook pinpoints the boat’s position using a GPS satellite antenna; then the engines and drives move independently to maintain the position and heading. It’s ideal for holding a

boat over a fishing spot, waiting for a drawbridge to open or maintaining position while waiting to refuel at a marina. Auto heading and waypoint sequencing make navigating to a final destination simple and efficient. A built-in digital compass on auto heading allows the captain to maintain course and make precise corrections with the touch of a finger. One-degree heading adjustments can be made with a tap on the joystick; 10-degree adjustments can be accomplished using the control panel. Trips with multiple stops between the starting point and final destination are a breeze with waypoint sequencing, which allows the operator to plot the boat’s course using multiple points. Captains will appreciate the redesigned VesselView information display, which provides information regarding all boat systems in a single location. VesselView provides up-to-date information for more than 30 engine parameters, including fuel level and range, oil temperature and pressure, water depth and more. Joystick Piloting for Outbaords was designed and developed for the Mercury Verado outboard, renowned for its smooth and incredibly quiet ride. The joystick system can be installed in boats powered by two to four Verado (250- or 300-hp) engines.

Stingray 198LX

After you teSt-drive the STINGRAY 198LX with fish and ski package, we’re pretty sure you’ll walk away with a smile on your face. It’s not your typical bowrider. The 198LX provides the go-fast performance STINGRAY is known for with its runabouts, but it’s actually one of the company’s new Sport Decks, which means it boasts extra width in both the cockpit and bow areas — including a 15-inch side-entry walkway at the transom and a fiberglass floor liner for easy cleanup at the end of a long, fun day out on the water. This boat gives new meaning to the word “crossover!” Here’s something else — STINGRAY’S 19-foot models outperform the competition with less power and manage to get better fuel mileage when comparing like power. A few numbers to consider: With a modest 4.3-liter engine for power, the STINGRAY 198LX is capable of reaching speeds in the upper 50-mile-per-hour range and getting 5.6 miles per gallon at cruise speed.* This saves you money at purchase AND at the gas pump. Fast, roomy and economical… all in the same boat!

In its standard mode, the STINGRAY 198LX is a superb boat. Add the optional fish and ski package, however, and now you have a boat that wows the entire family! Go fishing in the morning and convert the 198LX back to standard mode for skiing in the afternoon. The optional fish and ski package includes a removable trolling motor mount, bow casting platform, wired trolling motor panel, 22-quart aerated livewell for keeping your catch fresh, twodrawer integrated tackle box to keep your lures handy (yet out of the way), two fishing seats (one for the bow platform and one for the transom platform), and a custom stainless steel ski tow. Even with all these features, the best part is that the package is designed so you can quickly convert from one version to the other, leaving most of your time free for important things… like having fun. The 198LX with fish and ski package is like having two boats in one! * Performance data is based on independent third-party tests and may vary depending on a variety of factors.

Boat Insurance: Knowing the Ropes

Look for a policy that covers salvage costs (top) separate from hull coverage. With Agreed Hull Value coverage, you receive the replacement value of the boat with no deductible (right).

To Insure or Not to Insure Boat insurance is not required in the United States unless a vessel has a lien holder or the marina requires it. However, to adequately cover your boat you should purchase a policy that contains coverage for the vessel, engine, boating equipment and trailer — plus medical and liability coverage. Types of Coverage: Agreed vs. Actual Cash Value There are generally two types of coverage available for recreational boats: Agreed Value and Actual Cash Value (ACV). With an Agreed Value policy, you and the underwriter “agree” on the amount to be paid in the event of a total loss. For partial losses, equipment is generally replaced “new for old” (although certain items may be depreciated). Agreed Value coverage will typically cost more, but it offers more coverage and less out-ofpocket expense in the event of a claim. With ACV coverage, you receive the current market value of the boat in a total loss. For partial losses, everything damaged is subject to depreciation based on the age of the boat. So while paying less premium up front, you could experience significant personal expense to purchase a replacement boat, or to fix the damaged vessel.

Consequential Damage coverage will pay to refloat a boat that sinks due to a failed part.

Salvage Some policies will deduct the cost to salvage the boat from the amount paid for the total loss, while other policies will have a separate “pot” of money to pay the salvage costs. Consequential Damage If a boat sinks at the dock because of wear and tear on a part, some companies exclude the entire loss because the failed part wasn’t covered. With Consequential Damage coverage, the failed part still isn’t covered — but the boat salvage and repair is. Don’t Forget the Extras Other options can generally be added to a policy for an additional premium, including Personal Effects coverage for computers, fishing and watersports equipment, and Ice and Freezing coverage for cold weather states. It’s Not Always About Cost The real measure of any insurance company is its service. The financial stability and experience of the underwriter and, more importantly, the expertise of those handling the claims, is ultimately what sets one company apart from another.

Cutwater 30

Cutwater Boats of Monroe, Washington recently announced the introduction of its newest and largest cruiser, the Cutwater 30. The boat made its debut in January of this year at the Seattle International Boat Show. Based on the Cutwater Keel Stepped hull design, the Cutwater 30 expands on the brand’s original concept of comfortable family cruising, efficient performance and exceptional value. With its 30-foot, 3-inch molded length and 10-foot beam, the Cutwater 30 delivers an additional measure of interior and on-deck space compared to its 26and 28-foot predecessors, a lengthier roster of standard features, and more than a few design innovations of its own. Among the most visible of its many design advancements is the cockpit deck layout. By itself measuring some 80 square feet, its dimensions feel even roomier, thanks to port and starboard bench seats that seat four adults without encroaching on the main cockpit space. A reversible transom seat may be adjusted to face forward or aft to serve either as additional aft-deck seating or to face the view astern, and a panel cabin in the aft bulkhead swings up to allow the aft dinette seat to be reversed as a fourth cockpit seat. The entire arrangement accommodates up to eight adults in an agreeably social setting that leaves the entire aft deck open and uncluttered. A molded cabinet houses an electric refrigerator for

convenient refreshment service, and a flush hatch opens on gasassisted lifts for easy engine access. With its 6-feet, 6-inches of headroom, the salon is exceptionally spacious. The four-place dinette features a custom-crafted maple table that converts to a double berth. To port, a continuous countertop offers plenty of room for serving snacks or a complete buffet; this hinged surface conceals a stainless steel sink, refrigerator and electric range with oven. Other salon features include a flat screen TV, wine cooler and a microwave oven. A companionway behind the dinette leads to private sleeping quarters. The forward stateroom features an island double berth more than 7 feet in length. A large hanging locker and storage compartments accommodate clothing and gear for extended voyages, and a desk/ vanity includes a 110-12-volt charger for computers and electronics. The adjacent head includes an electric-flush toilet, vanity cabinet with vessel sink and large countertop, and a separate enclosed shower. The Cutwater 30 rides on the revolutionary Stepped Keel hull design, an advanced configuration that distributes lifting forces and a contact layer of air to deliver exceptionally efficient performance for extended range and a lower fuel bill. A skeg keel aids directional stability for straight tracking. Standard bow and stern thrusters permit precise maneuvering and easy docking.

The Beachlauncher The Beachlauncher is a patented, self-propelled, wireless remote-controlled boat launching vehicle manufactured since 2004 by Beachworks LLC in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Since its U.S. introduction, it has won wide acclaim at boat shows and in industry print media. The Beachlauncher eliminates the time consuming trip to the marina or public launch ramp, and if a mid-day storm suddenly rolls in, it will get you safely off the water in minutes instead of hours. The new hydraulic drive Beachlauncher series can transport a boat 16 feet to 29 feet in length and weighing as much as 10,000 pounds. Smaller units are designed to carry and launch two personal watercraft. The 2014 models are powered by a 25-hp gasoline engine with stateof-the-art micro hydraulics that allow the wide ATV tires with all-wheel drive to aggressively climb over rocks and challenging slopes, leaving a light footprint on the sand. When low water levels make it difficult to launch a boat from a ramp or dock, the Beachlauncher’s wireless remote control allows the operator to drive the unit into deeper water to deploy the boat either from the helm or walking on the beach. In addition to lakefront residential property owners throughout the U.S. and Canada, the Beachlauncher is being offered to police, fire departments, power/water plants and regulatory agencies. Local and international dealer opportunities are available. Experience the Beachlauncher first hand by viewing the video on our website.

ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment photo courtesy of boatus

As mosT boATErs know, ethanol blended gasoline can cause problems with your boat’s gasoline engine. While fuel stability and phase separation are well known, corrosion of internal engine components may be the most serious (and expensive to fix) problem caused by ethanol blended gasoline. Water and metal don’t like each other! Since E10 (10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline) can hold up to 5,000 parts per million of water in suspension compared with only 200 parts per million in pure gasoline, the huge amount of suspended water in E10 can cause corrosion of certain engine and fuel system components unless protected by a corrosion inhibitor (see photo, top left). Ethanol blended gasoline can absorb moisture that builds up in the fuel system and cause corrosion, especially when the boat is not being used. This problem can be severe in older marine engines, when components were not made for ethanol blends. ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment and ValvTect Marine Gasoline both contain a substantial amount of corrosion inhibitor (in addition to a stabilizer, moisture dispersant and detergent) that have been test-proven to completely prevent corrosion in ethanol blended gasoline as well as non-ethanol gasoline. When tested in E10 using the petroleum industry’s required test for corrosion, both ValvTect products received perfect A ratings (meaning no rust). To protect your boat’s engine from corrosion and all other ethanol fuelrelated problems, only use a fuel additive proven by petroleum industry tests to prevent corrosion, like ValvTect. ePaint Company ePaint ComPany offers a complete line of bottom paints for power- and sailboats. The company developed “The Better Bottom Paint” with the belief that the traditional way of keeping boat bottoms clean by leaching heavy metals like copper into lakes, rivers, estuaries and bays is not a sustainable practice. We developed and perfected copper-free antifouling, and we’ve been successfully doing so for the past 20 years. ePaint patented photoactive technology that keeps your boat clean without harming the environment. Our bottom paints are better because they outperform the rest, are easier for you to apply and are safer for our environment. All ePaint products are free of copper, tributyltin and other biocides that presist in nature. Our antifouling paints are formulated with either Zinc Omadine® or SeaNine 211N™ to effectively prevent bio-fouling in a responsible manner. Race your boat right and use an award-winning ePaint finish like EP2000. EP2000 was awarded the R&D 100 Award and the 2011 Exhibitor’s Choice Award by Practical Sailor magazine for “excellent” performance over the course of two years in the water. EP2000 yields a hard, durable finish that offers multi-season performance, preventing slime, grass and mussel build-up on the hull. It is the only bottom paint on market that can be applied directly to aluminum pontoons, running gear, lower units and trim tabs.

Back Cove 37 EffiCiEnt, Easy on the fuel bills and easy on the eyes. Back Cove Yachts are single-engine diesel motoryachts designed in the downeast style. Back Cove is a sister company of Sabre Yachts, and together these two entities form the largest recreational boat manufacturer in Maine, where America’s first ships were built on the shores of the Kennebec River. In 2003, a group of dealers asked Sabre if it could build a smaller downeast style cruising boat to suit the needs of Sabre owners who admired the look and feel of the traditional Maine lobster boat, but required the dependability and fuel efficiency of a single diesel engine. Back Cove’s first model, the Back Cove 29, was launched in 2004. In the years that followed, the Back Cove 26, Back Cove 33, Back Cove 37, Back Cove 30 and Back Cove 34 were born. Today, more than 500 Back Coves can be found roaming the oceans of the world, in harbors from Greece to Norway, and from Japan to Australia and New Zealand. In the United States, Back Coves have found their way to almost every body of water, from coastal regions to the inland lakes. The Back Cove 37 continues the practical features that characterize the company’s range of downeast-style motoryachts: Usability, low maintenance and fuel efficiency. The 37 is ideal for long-range cruising. Features include two staterooms, large head with separate stall shower, fully-equipped galley, large windows for visability, and ample storage.

Salta has spent her life in the freshwater of the Great Lakes. She has been professionally maintained since her delivery in 2000. This five stateroom version is the most sought after model in the fleet. Perfect for family travel or corporate entertaining.

Nomar® Bumpers are soft-mounted bumpers which absorb impact and allow you to slide in and out of your slip with no friction, drag or marring of your hull. This makes for a safer and less stressful docking experience by allowing everyone to stay on board, and allowing the vessel to get closer to the dock for easier and safer boarding. Nomar® Bumpers are perfect for tight docking situations and narrow slips. For more information visit our website or call for a FREE quote.

The northeastern Ohio communities of Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ashtabula,

F

Conneaut and Mentor hold a plethora of culinary, scenic and historic delights. rom wineries, covered bridges and a haunted lighthouse to a U.S. President’s home and library and the beautiful natural areas of a state park and arboretum, northeastern Ohio is a gem of a destination. The region, stretching from Lake County just east of Cleveland to Ashtabula County bordering Pennsylvania, is one of contrasting lifestyles and marinas, summer escapes and fishing, and historic and nature destinations. Oh, and if you’re lucky you may be able to snag an overnight reservation at a Frank Lloyd Wright B&B.

Lakefront Concert Series

Geneva-on-the-Lake A stop at the Ohio Wine Producers Association’s famed Vintage Ohio event in early August a few years ago left me dreaming of a return trip with time to linger. I wanted to relax with my husband at the Lodge at Geneva on Lake Erie, do tours and tastings at the wineries, picnic by a covered bridge, and bike shoreline trails and back roads. If we had cruised over, we would have docked at Geneva Marina in Geneva State Park. Operated by Xanterra Parks & Resorts, it has more than 400 slips including transient docking, fish cleaning and other services, boat repair and fueling, and a snack counter. “The wineries and ‘The Strip’ in town are why people come here,” says dockmaster George Krembrenk. “There’s lots to do when they get here. It’s not just staying on their boat.” A popular Lake Erie stop, Krembrenk recommends boaters reserve a slip the Monday before coming, particularly if they desire a weekend between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Although boaters tend to come from other Lake Erie towns, Krembrenk gets them from all over. “We have one here now from Florida, and we get people doing the loop,” he says. My husband and I dropped anchor, so to speak, at The Lodge at Geneva for its central location between Mentor and Ashtabula, Ohio and for its wonderful Lake Erie views. The bonus was a good dining room, bar with nightly entertainment, friendly staff, and bike rentals. Because we drove we didn’t need The Lodge’s wine shuttle tour, but it sounded good if we boated here or wanted to drink rather than just visit the wineries and taste. We could have dined just at The Lodge, which we did when we arrived. But we heard that the Crosswinds Grille at The Lakehouse Inn, about a 6-minute walk into town, drew diners from around the region. Chef Nate Fagnilli is known for his preparations of locally sourced foods. Reservations there are a must. Krembrenk and folks at The Lodge’s reception mentioned

“The Strip” as an attraction. We found it funky-looking and fun. You can hike or bike from The Lodge or the Conneaut marina to Adventure Zone at the western edge of Ashtabula The Strip for miniature golf, bumper boats, go karts, Geneva-onrie climbing walls, and more great family entertainment. the-Lake eE Lak Painesville Do a seafood supper at the Sandy Chanty, or go for Mentor the fresh Lake Erie walleye and perch at Lake Front on the water at the end of the strip. Cleveland Don’t miss the Old Firehouse Winery on Lake Road while you’re in the area. Open year round, the winery offers a calendar of events, a laid-back atmosphere and views of Lake Erie. “Walk the lake path or bring a bike,” says Geneva-on-the-Lake CVB director Marge Millike. She points out that no matter where you eat, the mood and pace is casual. The B&Bs in town might have a room if reserved in advance, but don’t try for a cottage. “Families have been coming here for several generations to escape the cities,” Millike says. Cottages are in high demand. Pickled Pepper Back at The Lodge, we checked with the reception desk for a map detailing wine and covered bridge routes. Don’t worry that you probably can’t do it all. We took a day just The Strip for bridges and wine and merely made a dent. Ashtabula’s 18 covered bridge trails divide into North/ Eastern and South/Western tours. Then there are the wineries scattered throughout Ashtabula County and into Lake County. Supposedly, there are 20 places to stop and sip. Based on our small sampling we found they varied greatly from intimate operations to full-scale ,Napa-style attractions, and from limited but choice vintages to a broad selection of varietals.

Area Wineries: Savor the Flavor Try to get to Debonné Vineyards, a Grand River winery in Madison that has been turning out the good stuff since 1916. Considered Ohio’s largest estate bottled winery, Debonné specializes in Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and ice wine.

St. Joseph Vineyard, another Madison winery, produces international-winning Pinot Noirs. Its other wines, including Rieslings and Chardonnays, are also award winners. Down the road is Grand River Cellars, another excellent choice. If you don’t mind limited tastings but want to leave with one of the best Chardonnay’s in the region, stop at Harpersfield Vineyard, between St. Joseph and Ferrante Winery. I tasted its Chardonnay on the first trip but didn’t take a bottle because I had no ice chest in which to store it — and the heat outside was unfair to great wine. This trip the Chardonnay, whose reputation has grown into the stuff of legend, was not open for tastings. Owner Patty Ribic explained they only produced a small amount. “We sell out what we make,” she explains. But a few other wines that could be sampled were excellent. Another must-stop on your agenda is Ferrante Winery. They do a wonderful lunch. We ate inside because of the outdoor temps, but normally the terrace is a wonderful place, with its fountain and vineyard setting. Then it was time to sip and shop. Part of the Grand River appellation, Ferrante’s Grand River Valley Golden Bunches Dry Riesling

Fairport Lighthouse

took Best of Class in the American Fine Wine Competition, and several of its wines are 2013 gold medal winners. The winery is operated by third-generation Ferrantes: Nick and sisters Carmel and Mary Jo.

november/december 2013

If you’re willing to have your mind changed about rosé, stop at M Cellars. Opened to the public in 2013 after selling its products to other vineyards for nearly six years, the wines are already award winners. By the way, don’t pass up the white steeple church you see on South River Road (near Grand River). The building houses the South River Vineyard. While there, stop in and visit the new kid on block and South River’s offspring, Red Eagle Spirits. It’s housed in a repurposed old barn. Checking out the Grand River wineries provides a good opportunity to snap a photo of the Harpersfield Covered Bridge. A two-span Howe Truss bridge, it is the country’s longest at 228 feet. Built in 1868, it’s listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The steel part was attached following a 1913 flood.

Ashtabula and Conneaut With The Lodge at Geneva as our headquarters, we drove scenic lake roads over to Ashtabula’s harbor and crossed the impressive Ashtabula Lift Bridge on Ohio State Route 531 to Conneaut, Ohio. A Strauss Bascule bridge constructed in 1925, it’s on the National Register of Historic Places. What a photo op! The structure was up when we arrived, so we decided to park and window shop Bridge Street’s shops and galleries. They’re housed in turn-of-the-century buildings. We could easily have stayed longer to lunch there, visit its Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum, go to Walnut Beach (known for lake glass) and check out the Ashtabula Maritime Museum. But we wanted to also see the harbor at Conneaut, do some of the 18 covered bridges on Ashtabula’s map east tour and still get back to Geneva-onthe-Lake for our dinner reservation at the Crosswinds Grille. What we did find out is that even though the Ashtabula Harbor at Lake Erie and the Ashtabula River is a working freighter stop, its scenic shoreline and the Ashtabula Yacht Club (AYC) is a good Lake Erie destination. Located on the river near the lift bridge, AYC is convenient. It welcomes transients but does not take reservations. There are other marinas on the river that mostly store and service local boats; however, boaters are welcome to check out Kister Marina, also near the bridge, and Brockway North Coast Marina further down the river. “Most visiting boaters come to us,” says AYC fleet captain Niles Waring. “We’ve had boaters dock here from Florida and Wisconsin.” Waring points out that Ashtabula is worth visiting. “We’ve had a revitalization. Bridge Street has nice restaurants and shops, and boaters have only about 300 yards to walk,” he says. When the bridge was lowered, we were off to Conneaut, a world-class fishing area at the mouth of Conneaut Creek. The creek is considered the county’s top steelhead trout stream, and the lake is a prime walleye and perch fishing spot. At the Conneaut Port Authority office, harbor master Denver Spieldenner had good news and bad. Yes, they welcome transients into their 300-slip marina and yes, they

take reservations through their fuel dock office. They would probably need a couple of weeks notice, however, because the port is such a popular fishing stop. “We never turn away a boater,” Spieldenner adds. That said, the bad news is that the Port Authority slips are for boats 25 feet and under, though it can occasionally accommodate boats up to 30 feet. Back to the good news: There are two fish cleaning stations across the way, and the marina has showers and laundry facilities. Among other advantages are its location, according to Spieldenner. “We have quick access to Lake Erie,” he says. You don’t have to navigate the river.”

Mentor/Mentor-on-the-Lake Whether cruising or driving to a destination such as Genevaon-the-Lake, it’s possible to miss some gems along the way. But if you dock at the elegant Mentor Harbor Yachting Club in Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio and rent a car, or if you’re driving and can snag a room at the charming Lawnfield Inn and Suites in Mentor, you’ll uncover treasures best

Fresnel Lens, and hearing about all the museum’s Great Lakes memorabilia from keeper Dan Maxson, then listening for its cat ghost. “This is the first lighthouse museum in Ohio and the Great Lakes,” says Maxon. As he shows off the artifacts during a museum tour, his excitement is infectious.

known locally, but flying below the general radar. Picture a lighthouse haunted by a cat and an unusual campaign location, library and estate of a former U.S. President. First, treat yourself to a stop at the Mentor Harbor Yachting Club (MHYC). We were wowed by its gorgeous Mediterranean architecture and its friendly staff when stopping there on our drive from Geneva-on-the-Lake to the Lawnfield Inn. Although MHYC is private and among the top clubs on the Great Lakes, you’ll know it welcomes transients when you are handed a Visitor’s Guide listing options for provisions, health care, pharmacies, car rental and taxi service. Its guide also includes where to find marine hardware and supplies and boat services, such as Freshwater Gills, specializing in restoration of marine interiors. MHYC has a fine dining room, snack bar, pool and beach and will work with boaters 24/7. “Just call ahead to make sure we can accommodate you,” says harbormaster Dan Miller. We relocated from The Lodge at Geneva to Mentor’s Lawnfield Inn for its central location. To the east is Geneva-on-the-Lake. North is the Fairport Harbor Museum and Lighthouse. South is Holden Arboretum and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Penfield House. West is Lawnfield, President James A. Garfield’s estate.

For lunch, we drove a short distance south where we could cross to the village of Grand River, Ohio on the western shore to indulge in seafood at Brennan’s Fish House. But we had to peek in to Pickle Bill’s Lobster House across the road because the outside was so outrageously funky. The inside turned out to be just as fascinating. I wouldn’t want to spoil the fun, so you’ll have to put Pickle Bill’s on your short list. At the opposite end of the architectural spectrum from Grand River’s restaurant shacks was the Penfield House on the Chagrin River southwest of Mentor in Willoughby Hills, Ohio. Imagine sleeping in a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home. Casual tourists cannot stop by the Penfield House, which is privately owned by Louis Penfield’s descendents, but it’s available for a short stay with a two-night minimum. The next day we mused about what James A. Garfield, a brilliant man who was shot early in his term as the 20th President of the United States, would have accomplished if he lived. Garfield’s Lawnfield Estate is within hiking distance from Lawnfield Inn, where we’d dined the previous night and enjoyed a lovely meal. Operated as a national house and park, the home also contains Garfield’s presidential library. South of Mentor, a winding road leads to the scenic Holden Arboretum. A favorite of bird watchers, Holden also has research, landscaping, shade and butterfly gardens. One last treat before heading home was to stop at Malley’s Chocolate Shoppe and Ice Cream Parlor. Opened in 1935 during the Great Depression, Malley’s has nearly 25 locations in and around Cleveland as it expanded to meet demand for its ice cream concoctions and chocolate covered “marshmallos,” toffee and pretzels. We left with yummy Bordeaux chocolates. A sweet and indulgent end to an even more delightful northeastern Ohio trip. LB

Cruising by car Industrial alterations where the Grand River meets Erie have changed the landscape and seascape in front and on the side of the Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse. But it’s still is a prime destination. (Note: The Fairport Harbor Breakwater Light seen across the Grand River is privately owned.) A visit here is more about taking in the scenery from atop the 60-foot sandstone lighthouse, stepping into the Frontenac Pilot House, seeing the lighthouse’s third order

Fest ivals

Vintage Ohio Held at Lake County’s Metroparks Farmpark in Kirtland, Vintage Ohio is a fun festival of tastings from about 20 Ohio wineries, a sampling of gourmet treats and a browsing of crafters’ wares to the sounds of jazz, blues and rock bands. The event, which marks its 20th anniversary in 2014, typically takes place the first week of August. It also features cooking demonstrations and wine discussions. visitvintageohio.com

Ashtabula Covered Bridge Festival Based at the County Fairgrounds in Jefferson, about 7 miles south of Ashtabula (and about 9 miles south of the Ashtabula harbor), the Covered Bridge Festival usually takes place the second weekend of October. The festival is really a celebration of fall; however, it’s a great time to see the bridges when the seasonal color is at its best. coveredbridgefestival.org

our bedrooms, four baths, more than 3,500 square feet, and four levels of living space. This is not your typical condo. Located on 113 feet of southern Lake Macatawa frontage, just a mile and a half from Lake Michigan and 3 miles from charming downtown Holland, Michigan, this home is truly special. “There’s a view of Lake Macatawa from each floor,” says owner and Holland native Cal Beltman, including plenty of views of the boats going by. “It’s an up-and-down house — you get three amazing views, but can have privacy, too.” Built in 2003, the home is one of four units and boasts three floors plus a basement that has plenty of storage and room for a pool table and wine cellar. The first floor includes a two-pluscar garage, full bath, laundry room, and entertainment space. The second level is the main living area, with eat-in kitchen that features stainless steel appliances, granite counters and cherry cabinets. There’s also a separate dining area, office/ bedroom and full bath. And upstairs is a master suite complete with a walk-in closet, custom bathroom and access to the second deck, plus two additional bedrooms and another bath.

“One of the things that drew us to the home was all the woodwork,” Beltman says. “The kitchen cabinets are beautiful, and there are beautiful hardwood floors. And it’s spacious without being too big.” Another nice perk: An elevator that runs between the three main floors. Outside, the gorgeous landscaping is meticulously maintained by the association, maximizing free time for those who live there. For water lovers, that means taking advantage of the home’s unique location. Each of the condo units has four slips right on Lake Macatawa — a deep water slip and three interior slips. “You can just walk out to your backyard and get on your boat,” Beltman says. “Everything is right there.” There’s plenty located within walking distance, including a restaurant across the street, grocery store and post office. “You can walk everywhere; it’s a beautiful neighborhood with nice walking and nice biking.” Beltman says. “It’s a house for active people.” LB

One word sums up this magnificent home on Lake Charlevoix’s North Shore: Fun. Jets in Time Jet propulsion is the wave of the future.

I

am not a marine engineer, and I don’t play one on TV. I am, however, a retired boat owner with a continuing interest in the state of the boating industry and the future of boating technology. The dozen or so boats that I have owned throughout my lifetime were all driven by propellers. Some were two-bladed and some were three. The power source has been both inboard and outboard. Even when we switched to sail for our primary source of power, we’d back it up with a diesel-driven propeller. Jets came along too late for me to be tempted to experiment, but I’ve seen them in action. Right now the market seems to be focused on jet boats and ski boats, but we all know what happens when new technology gets a foot in the door. In the world of aviation, jet fighters became the new face of dog fighting back in the late 1940s. As turbo technology advanced, it wasn’t long before the big multi-engine airliners and bombers switched to jets for an awesome leap forward in power and performance. So what’s all this got to do with boating? I believe the aviation evolution is simply a foreshadowing of what could happen to marine power. Right now, jet-powered products focus on speed and agility, but as a longtime cruiser I look back on my history with propellers and recall how vulnerable they were to grounding — and how costly they were to rebalance. Perhaps it was just my bad luck or my faulty navigation, but I always managed to find the hidden stump, the floating log, the unexpected rock formation, the gravel bottom shallows. One year during our storied cruising career there seemed to be a noticeable rash of disconnected prop shafts simply backing themselves out of the boat and sinking to the bottom. I became paranoid after hearing several of these emergency events over the radio. I added hose clamps to our shaft just to keep it inside the boat. More than once I was involved with shaft-tangled dock lines that required scuba gear and the sacrifice of a fine knife that lost its edge when it cut through the line and confronted the shaft. And then there was the time when cruising friends came

Boats are going the way of jets when it comes to propulsion!

to join us in Frankfort, Michigan. The marina water was crystal clear, and as my friend shifted into reverse at the entrance of his slip, I saw his propeller simply spin off the shaft and sink gracefully into the deep water. For the record, a diver retrieved it; but that’s not the point of my story. My point is that I’ve begun to wonder if the next generation of jet power will be the propulsion mode of choice for cruisers as well as ski boats…? Performance comparison tests involving runabout-sized boats powered with both jet- and sterndrives indicate each has its advantages and disadvantages that balance each other out in the long run. The cost of annual maintenance was about even, but there was no allowance for prop damage repair. Then again, perhaps I’ve just been unlucky (and therefore paranoid). As a retired boater, I no longer have a dog in this fight; but I am intensely interested in the future direction of marine propulsion. My guess is that the day is coming (sooner rather than later) when those beautiful bronze props will become permanent residents of marine museums everywhere. This assumption is even foreshadowed by nature. After all, the jet-powered squid has been a master of the ocean deep for centuries. Can we really be that far behind? LB
