Finding the Right Boat

S

electing a new boat requires research, of course, but also some real thought and reflection. My parents have had a pontoon boat for the past few years, which we’ve cherished as our family has expanded and we needed more room onboard. The spacious deck, 300-hp outboard and tritoons perfectly matched our boating needs as a family at that time. However, my parents are ready for more adventure as they head into their retirement years and that meant a boat with two key elements: A head (highly requested by all members of our family) and more power to push through the sometimes brutal Lake Michigan waves, allowing them to explore farther up and down the West Michigan coast. So it was goodbye to the pontoon and hello to a new bowrider! It’s always a good reminder when looking for a boat to really understand how you will use it and be honest with yourself as to what features are make-or-breaks.

If you’re in the market for a new boat, check out two versatile models that we sea trialed for this issue: The Formula 380 SSC, which comes in both outboard and sterndrive configurations (p. 34), and the Glastron GTD 245 (p. 38), a shape-shifting deckboat.

Starting next year, transient boaters will be able to tie up on Navy Pier’s north side and enjoy the city’s popular destination. Navy Pier Marina — the first and only dedicated transient marina on Lake SIRIUSSIGNAL.COM. Michigan — will have space for boats up to 130 feet and will provide a boater’s lounge, bike racks, grills, in-slip pump-out and concierge services.

Sea Ray Debuts SLX-R 400e Outboard at CES 2020

Viking Cruises Comes to the Great Lakes in 2022

Sea Ray’s brand-new SLX-R 400e Outboard yacht is a showstopper, with the eco-friendly Fathom e-Power system supplying power to all of the model’s accessories, triple Mercury Racing 450R outboards, Mercury Joystick Piloting for Outboards, dual 16-inch displays, a full FUSION Apollo RA770 audio system, a fold-out swim terrace, room for 22 passengers and sleeping space for four. Pack your bags because Viking will begin offering “destination-focused learning” cruises around the Great Lakes and Antarctica in 2022. The cruises will visit areas around Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ontario aboard the Viking Octanis.

The ship can accommodate up to 378 guests in 189 staterooms and features an in-ship marina called The Hangar, expedition equipment, sprawling deck areas, a panoramic auditorium, Nordic balconies in all staterooms, three different pools (including one with an “inside-out” experience), fitness center and spa, and more.

To develop the new expedition voyages, Viking has partnered with some of the world’s most prestigious scientific institutions, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), whose scientists will join expeditions in the Great Lakes to conduct research focused on changes in the region’s weather, climate and ecosystems. NOAA scientists may also offer lectures about the Great Lakes’ unique environment to Viking guests during these voyages.

Three eight-day trips will be offered with start dates in April and May 2022. The Undiscovered Great Lakes (from Thunder Bay, Ontario, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin) starts at $6,695 per person.

The Great Lakes Explorer (from Milwaukee to Thunder Bay) starts at $6,495 per person. The Niagara & The Great Lakes (from Toronto to Milwaukee) starts at $5,995 per person. The Canadian Discovery cruise is a 13-day cruise (from New York to Toronto) that starts at $8,995 per person.

BoatTEST Announces New Leasing Division BoatTEST, a resource for boat testing and consumer education, has announced its new division, BoatTESTLEASING, which will market leases in new boats for their owners. The program is modeled closely after auto leasing.

“Surveys among our BoatTEST members indicate that American boaters are ready for boat leasing, as 43% say they are ready to lease a new boat and 75% say they will seriously consider it,” says BoatTEST Owner Jeff Hammond. “ The way the program works is boat owners can lease out their boat by selling numerous leases to

people looking for premium boats at a far less expensive cost than ownership. The costs of slip rental, storage, insurance and maintenance is then split among all the leasees. The lease terms will be for 48 months.

Chaparral Debuts Two Outboard Models at 2020 Chicago Boat Show

Chaparral’s two newest luxury outboard boats were introduced to the public at this year’s Chicago Boat Show, which ran January 8-12. The new 280 OSX features ample seating and the Vista View lounge, which can change position to allow full-length lounging in the aft position. Discover Michigan Shipwrecks Via a New App

A lot of Great Lakes history lies below the surface of the cold freshwater, ready to be studied. Thanks to the Michigan History Center, you now can find nearly 1,500 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes surrounding the state of Michigan via the Michigan Shipwrecks StoryMap website and mobile app.

The app allows users to search for shipwrecks by name or by location and then download the data to use for charts or PDFs. Pictures and other information, like accessibility if you’re a diver, paddleboarder or kayaker, are also available. The dive sites are all labeled by difficulty level: “B” for beginners, “I” for intermediate or “A” for advanced. The app also maps locations of lighthouses and boating access sites. The map will be updated as more ships are discovered and additional information becomes available.

“This new tool gives divers, kayakers, snorkelers and armchair explorers a chance to learn more about these underwater archaeological sites and the circumstances that led to the shipwrecks,” says Sandra Clark, director of the Michigan History Center. “It’s a wonderfully interactive way to help people connect with this part of Michigan’s maritime history.”

Great Lakes Erosion Continues

National Park Service employees began work at the Indiana Dunes National Park on Lake Front Drive in Beverly Shores, Indiana, on December 27, laying “sand traps” to combat the beach erosion.

Officials had to close a segment of the parking lot at Lakeview Beach due to the rising Lake Michigan water level. Three years ago, there was 40 feet of dune and beach here.

ODNR Revamps Online Reservation and Watercraft Registration System

A new decade means a new online user experience for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR)! Tahquamenon Falls State Park Michigan’s wonderful waterfalls.

ong before 19th-century lumbermen and Longfellow discovered the rushing, amber-colored waters of the Tahquamenon River and Falls, they were known to the Native Americans, missionaries and fur traders who lived and worked in the northeastern Upper Peninsula wilderness. In his 1840 survey of the region, state geologist Douglass Houghton observed riverside signs of lodges, portage trails and farmland of the Ojibwa people. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow included the waterway known as Taquamenaw in “The Song of Hiawatha” — his epic poem of 1855. Nearly a century later, the falls and surrounding wilderness were made into a state park, and now its 46,000 acres make it the second largest in the system.

Year-round playground The photogenic Upper Falls at the heart of Tahquamenon Falls State Park is the best-known of Michigan’s 200 named waterfalls, and the main attraction for many of the park’s 600,000 annual visitors. It’s a short stroll along an accessible path to view the tinted water rushing over the 200-footwide, 50-foot-high drop at — depending on the season — 5,000 to 50,000 gallons per second.

Tannins that leach from the cedar, spruce and hemlock in swamps drained by the river cause the brown hue, and churning creates foam, inspiring a “Root Beer Falls” moniker.

After viewing the Upper Falls, Park Manager Kevin Dennis encourages the short drive or four-mile, moderately rigorous hike to the Lower

Falls, a series of five gentle cascades that invite splashing, wading and rowing a rental boat to a small island. From there, Dennis suggests heading to Lake Superior to rent kayaks at the Rivermouth, where “You can go out into the bay or fool around in the river.” He also recommends a guided nature hike or one of the free programs at the park.

“You can get the history of the area, go on hunts for insects and critters, or learn archery,” Dennis says, “and it’s all free.”

Miles of hiking trails lead to quiet areas for picnicking, blueberry picking and wildlife viewing for moose, black bear, wolves, fox, deer, waterfowl, bald eagles and 125 other bird species. There’s fishing for northern pike, muskellunge, walleye and yellow perch, and snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Camping ranges from backcountry to rustic and modern sites, as well as a yurt, camper cabin and three-bedroom lodge. One campground is open in all four seasons.

From timber to tourists Logging operators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries depended on the Tahquamenon River to transport their harvest to the sawmills at Lake Superior. One of those lumbermen, Robert Hunter, decided to build a riverside sawmill and railroad to more efficiently transport his timber, but by 1925, he ceased operations. At that time, auto touring was growing and local conservation officer Joe Beach saw an opportunity. He leased the idle tracks, and in 1927 transported his first tourists aboard a makeshift train to a riverboat that carried the passengers to the falls.

The wildly popular excursion soon demanded new and larger equipment. Nicknamed “Toonerville Trolley,” the open-air train cars still chug along a 24-inch narrow gauge track to the 180-passenger riverboat helmed by Robert Hunter’s great-grandson Kris Stewart. Captain Stewart narrates the two-hour cruise to the falls, sharing local history and pointing out wildlife along the way. It’s a long, leisurely outing that offers a view of the falls from a different vantage point than park visitors get from across the river.

Brewmaster since the pub opened in 1996, she keeps up to four taps flowing with the likes of Red Falls Tannin and Blueberry Wheat Ale, created in honor of August’s Wild Blueberry Festival in nearby Paradise. Her Lumberjack Lager takes longer to ferment and the microbrewery just can’t keep up with the demand in the summer months so she enjoys making it in the winter — her favorite season at the falls because “the ice formations are just spectacular.” ★

Swim platform boarding ladder selection and installation. common yarn at most any yacht club Tiki bar is of a crew hitting the water for a quick mid-transit swim only to discover, to their horror, they were unable to climb back onboard. In efforts to prevent you from becoming the fodder of such Mary Celeste-type tales, here’s the scoop on choosing and installing a boarding ladder.

What they do Boarding ladders provide a means of safely entering and exiting the water from a boat’s deck or swim platform. They can also make it easier to board a dinghy and assist in the retrieval of personnel in a MOB (man overboard) situation in calmer waters.

American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) standards call for vessels to be outfitted with a means of unassisted reboarding that is accessible to or deployable by a person in the water. To make boarding easier, the top surface of the lowest step should extend at least 12 inches below the waterline with the boat in a static floating position.

Selection Boarding ladders can be fixed or portable and come in a variety of styles and prices. Select those constructed of non-corroding materials, such as plastic, aluminum or stainless steel. Aluminum weighs less and is cheaper than stainless steel, but stainless steel is stronger and more durable.

Types Portable ladders are removable and normally stowed until needed. The most common type found aboard smaller powerboats is the gunwale-mount unit, which Hinged simply hooks over the side of swim the boat. Gunwale-mounted platform ladder ladders are handy and relatively inexpensive; however, they also can be flimsy. Another possible downside is that they tend to move about when in use, making them harder for corn-fed passengers or crew to climb.

Removable ladders (as opposed to portable ladders) are attached using permanently mounted brackets.

These are typically bolted to the gunnels or deck of a vessel and utilize keyhole slots, cotter pins or some similar arrangement, allowing them to be easily installed and removed when not in use.

Some units are rigid, one-piece units, while others are hinged (so that they can be folded up when not in use), telescoping or even accordion-style units.

Swim step ladders are typically mounted to a boat’s swim platform, while swim platform ladders (essentially a small, fixed step with a folding ladder attached) are an option for vessels lacking the room for a full swim platform. When not in use, they normally fold up onto the swim platform or telescope out of the way.

Installation Although the thought of drilling holes in your boat can be unnerving at first, installing a boarding ladder is well within the ability of any competent DIYer. Here are the basic steps for installing a typical swim platform ladder.

1. Review the manufacturer’s instructions thoroughly.

2. Select the best side of the transom to mount the ladder. The side you choose should provide easy boarding and not interfere with previously mounted equipment.

3. Stern ladders should be mounted as far as practical from the boat’s centerline (and propellers). Turn the outboard or sterndrive as far as possible toward the selected side, then mark the transom with a grease pencil to show how far the unit extends. Next, position the swim step outboard of the mark, keeping it above and parallel with the waterline. The exact height above the waterline called for by the manufacturer may vary, but 6 inches is a good general rule if not provided.

4. Mark the holes for the mounting bolts with a grease pencil. Verify you’ll be able to access each from inside the vessel once drilled (in order to install and tighten the mounting hardware) and that you won’t be drilling into anything, such as equipment, wire runs, plumbing, etc.

5. Drill the holes using appropriately sized bits.

Start by making an indentation at the center of each hole with an awl or another suitably sharp object to prevent your drill bit from wandering.

Next, drill a small pilot hole, then re-drill with

the correct sized bit. To avoid chipping the gelcoat, use sharp bits and drill at a slow speed using minimal pressure on the drill, allowing the bit Hideaway to do the work. Another trick telescoping swim platform is running the bit in reverse ladder until it’s through the gelcoat, then switching to forward and continuing to drill as normal.

6. Dry mount the ladder to verify everything is properly aligned, then remove the ladder and thoroughly seal the edges of any exposed coring with epoxy to prevent water intrusion into the transom.

7. Once the epoxy has dried, install the ladder, thoroughly bedding (caulking) the mounting hardware with a suitable marine-grade sealant. Use

only marine-grade stainless steel mounting hardware and install backing plates or large washers inside to spread the load evenly.

8. Check and tighten the mounting hardware periodically.

9. Finally, for stern-mounted ladders, place a warning sticker about propellers and CO (carbon monoxide) poisoning at the helm, as well as a second decal warning about CO, propellers and the dangers of teak surfing on the exterior of the stern or transom. ★

are good examples. More than 25 years ago, Bill spotted a bench made from recycled plastic lumber. He and his wife needed a platform for their boat, and this bench had potential.

The duo incorporated the bench design into a platform for their own boat, presenting it at the 1995 Cleveland Boat Show and telling everyone about it as they cruised Lake Erie during the summer months. Soon afterward, they started offering custom replacement pieces made from the plastic lumber.

And their company, PlasTeak, was born.

Why a teak substitute?

“We built platforms in our basement until we could open a second manufacturing location in our garage,” Eve recalls. “We knew that a material that would stand up to the harsh marine environment while maintaining its good looks had to be a winner. Our customers agreed.”

The Gribbles learned of another attractive and durable product to compliment the plastic lumber.

Teak & Holly is a flexible commercial-grade floor with nine available color and texture options under a heavy, clear coat. This material also aligns with the Gribble’s goal of finding materials that “look like wood but are easier” to maintain.

“It comes on a roll 6 feet wide, and we offer it by the lineal foot,” Eve says. “The second option is our EZ BoatSole, which comes as click flooring approximately 8 inches wide and 48 inches long. This also has an image of the teak and holly printed on it, with a clear protective coat on the surface.”

Because the boards are 100% plastic, they won’t swell or deteriorate due to water. They’re also easy to maintain over time with just regular cleaning.

For exterior decking, boat owners can use sister brand PlasDeck, founded in 2005 and the only synthetic teak decking made in the United States.

It comes in 22 color combinations, it’s flexible, and it glues down over fiberglass, steel or aluminum. It also has an impressive 25- to 30-year life span.

“We have customers come up to us at the boat shows all the time who installed their interior flooring three, five or even 10 years ago, and they

tell us how well it’s held up,” Eve says. “We get the same feedback from our decking customers, both individuals and the boatbuilders that have used our products for years.”

Not only do these flooring options upgrade the feel of the boat, they also assist with resale value down the road.

“We’ve heard that these boats sell easily, as the labor of care for the decking is eliminated,” Eve explains. “Our own 36-foot Tiara, with its six-year-old decking, cleaned up to its original beauty and sold quickly. We’ve heard from the current owner, a charter captain, who enjoys the secure footing and easy clean-up.”

DIY-friendly upgrades PlasTeak typically sells its interior flooring as cut goods to the boat owner, who then handles the installation. PlasDeck exterior decking is sold to end-users, professional installers and boatbuilders alike, with a DIY version specifically for handy boat owners.

“We have a template material that allows owners or installers to make a template and send

it to us, and then we return a mat that’s ready to glue down,” Eve notes.

If you’re interested in replacing your boat’s flooring inside or out, the best place to start is with a rough sketch that includes all dimensions, as well as photographs of the area to be covered. An important note: If you’re replacing interior carpet, pull up a few corners to see if you have wood or fiberglass underneath. Check to see how irregular the substrate is, as it might need some prep work before you install the new flooring.

Redundant vs. Networked Helms

T

hanks to new marine electronics on the market, it’s easier than ever to have all the information you need available anywhere onboard. The options seem endless and are restricted only by budget and space.

Networking displays to share data and images is now a relatively simple process and can allow for some impressive and functional helms. But what if that network system were to fail in some way? Would you lose critical information that could threaten the vessel’s safe operation? Would independent and redundant systems be a better answer? Either option could work, but each has its compromises.

Networked systems Many boats today are set up with networked multifunction displays (MFDs) linked together by various cables. These can include NMEA 2000 cables that allow the sharing of digital data, such as depth, speed and temperature. These linked displays can also utilize network cables that allow the sharing of imagery, such as radar displays, electronic charts and sonar displays.

The fact that one display in the network can have all onboard sensors and transducers connected directly to it and then can share that data avnd images with any other display in the network not only makes installation simple but can also save money. Rather than having to buy MFDs that have sounder technology within them (as many mid- and high-end displays do) a lower cost MFD or chartplotter can be added as a full-functioning secondary or remote display. With the transducer connected to and interfaced with the display containing the sounder hardware, it can repeat all the information the primary MFD produces.

Redundant systems While you may save money in a multi-display system, it can be a compromise if redundancy is desired. If the same system was comprised of two MFDs that had the sounder option within them and one unit were to go down, the second display could take over and display sounder and fish finder functions. It may require the transducer being unplugged from the failed unit and plugged into the secondary MFD, but sounder information would be available even with a failure. If the system is comprised of more than two displays then only

two would need the fishfinder/sounder option to have redundancy. If one of those displays is smaller in size than the other, you could save money by making that unit the backup sounder option.

Of course, if redundancy is desired, there is another option: Simply buy two standalone units.

Many times, manufacturers offer standalone chartplotter/fishfinder combination units (that cannot be interfaced to share display data) at a lower cost than more complex, networkable MFDs. Many include transducers, and the buyer not only ends up with two capable displays but a spare transducer as well.

Many boats on the water have two identical standalone displays mounted side by side, with one displaying chart information and the other displaying sounder options. Some boats even have both transducers mounted, ensuring simple redundancy.

If both transducers are installed, be aware that if they are on at the same time and running at the same frequency, they may interfere with one another. To avoid issues, simply turn one off, unplug it from the back of the display, or set it to a different frequency from its twin.

Other considerations Many of these chartplotter combination displays now come with charts preloaded, which may be good enough for some users. However, if more detailed or wider coverage of charting is required, be advised that you will need a chart card for each display, as they are not interfaced and sharing displays. Of course, the chart card can be removed from one and placed in the other should there be a failure in one display.

Many MFDs now have the capability of transmitting their displays via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to a smart device with a pre-installed app, which can provide a secondary display or even a full-functioning remote. However, they will not work should the primary display go down. By setting up a smart device with preloaded electronic charts — such as those offered by Navionics with one of its apps and utilizing the smart device’s GPS — one could have a backup chartplotter of sorts.

Again, this is a compromise: In order to be effective, the smart device would need its GPS to work independently of cellular connection. ★

Tips on making fishing safe for you, me and the environment.

ishing attracts people for many reasons: The beauty of nature, catching unique fish, fighting the big ones and, sometimes, the goal to land a trophy. Perhaps the enjoyment comes from the competitive spirit between friends or simply just being with others.

True sportsmen are concerned with population sustainability and leaving the environment as they found it, for others to enjoy. The following fishing tips should be a part of your eco-friendly repertoire.

Equipment care Assume that everything you fish with will eventually end up at the bottom of the lake; therefore, choose things carefully, like 100% lead-free tackle that won’t harm the environment.

Keep your equipment in good condition, including rods, reels, tackle — even boats. They will last longer and cost less over time.

For rods, pass a cotton ball through the guide rings.

Fibers will catch where you should rub with sandpaper to keep them smooth enough not to catch the line to break it. Before storing rods, loosen the drag on the line to prevent breaking the line or rod tip.

Overhaul your reel with reel-approved oils sparingly, not WD-40, which creates a hard-toremove finish as it heats up from friction.

Finally, maintain and clean your boat properly after every use. Watch for oil and gasoline leaks that can contaminate the water.

Recycle monofilament Expect lines to break, to be cut off, or have short pieces at the end of a spool thrown away.

Monofilament lines take 600 years to decompose.

Line can endanger wildlife in the water and landfills by entanglement or digestion. Even scuba divers and boat propellers are not immune.

Keep a closed-top container for used line only.

If possible, cut the line into smaller 3-inch pieces and bottle them in the event that the container is overturned. Empty the line into special monofilament recycling bins found on docks or at marinas.

You can make a monofilament bin for about $100; you can find instructions at BOATUS.ORG/MONOFILAMENT/ BUILD-A-BIN. Once the bin is made, ensure you maintain it. Box up the monofilament and mail to Berkley Recycling (1900 18th Street, Spirit Lake, Iowa 51360).

They will repurpose line to make fish habitats.

Another option is purchasing eco-friendly fishing line that decomposes in two to five years. One such product is Bioline monofilament, which comes in various pound strengths. Bioline was created by a company that developed dissolving medical sutures.

You can also try biodegradable hooks and lures too.

Bait Ensure live bait is compatible with or common to the area’s water, so if it drops, it won’t matter. Live bait is preferable to plastic lures that may remain in riverbeds or get hung up in submerged debris.

Biodegradable bait is also available.

Catch and release — or eat Without going over your limit, the best fishing practice is to keep the fish you are willing to clean and eat. Keep the fish that are invasive or those that come from overpopulated species. Catch and release is great for fish populations — and your ego — so take a photo and embellish your story.

If you take fish home, use all of it. Break up fish bones and cartilage, which are rich in calcium, while the rest of the fish is high in minerals; all of it is terrific for the garden. Mix it with leaves, bark or sawdust to create compost.

Clean up After you collect your personal trash, pick up other trash in the area too. Your fishing spot will become more attractive, will not attract animals and will not add waste to the environment. Even if you must carry trash offsite, discard or recycle it properly.

Bits of debris and microscopic organisms are easily transferred from one body of water to another, so clean your equipment after each use. First flush your rods and reels at a washout area. Then brush on a biodegradable soap or vinegar with a soft toothbrush and rinse. Dry the rod with a cloth and let the reels air-dry completely before using it again.

For hooks and lures, try some toothpaste or a little ketchup, with a soft-bristle toothbrush to polish or remove rust. Then rinse in warm water and air-dry completely to avoid more rust.

Eco-friendly fishing isn’t a hassle. It generates good habits that not only make you feel good but also ensure fishing can continue for another season — and another generation. ★

et’s admit it, there are some ugly boats out there. Sure, they may have the functionality you desire, but you may also get those dockside head-scratchers who just can’t figure out what you see in such an unattractive ride. I’ve witnessed more misplaced hull windows than I care for.

And huge, bulbous hardtops (I’m sure they have great interior headroom) remind me of the character Igor in the movie “Young Frankenstein” saying, “Hump, what hump?”

You don’t have to worry about any of that with the Formula 380 SSC. It has function, seaworthiness, nice

accommodations and, yes, it’s attractive.

The 380 SSC exudes character and style through masculine lines, so you’ll have bragging rights at the dock and be the envy of the waterway.

From the beefy side profile, proportionate house-to-hull size ratio and a generously spacious swim platform, the 380 SSC stands out from every other boat at the dock. I just had to see what it was all about.

BEST OF ALL WORLDS My appointed captain for the day of my sea trial was Vic Spellberg, a seasoned

boater who is like a walking Formula encyclopedia. Spellberg’s experience on this boatbuilder is lengthy and duly evident early on, as our conversations and my constant questions had him teaching me everything I needed to know about the 380 SSC. The name reveals a lot about the 380; Spellberg explains that the “SSC” stands for “Super Sport Crossover,” which in Formula speak means that this boat — like the rest of the SSC models — can do just about anything you wish. Formula’s mission for the SSC line is to offer the

best of all worlds, from dayboat versatility and watersport enjoyment to overnight or weekend comforts. Add in reliable performance, exceptional seaworthiness and fantastic speed along with those good looks and it’s apparent that Formula has created a very attractive vessel in the 380.

With a single-level main deck that is surrounded on three sides by an integrated framed windshield and side windows, the structure supports a stout hardtop with an electric sunroof. There’s great protection from the elements here, with plenty of sunning areas fore and aft.

TAKE A BOW While many boats offer access to the open foredeck via a center walkway, Formula offsets the path to the port side for several good reasons. Not only does this create a nearly perfect circular seating area up front, but it also maximizes usable space in the lower cabin — that’s right, a lower cabin in a bowrider.

No more fighting a floppy hinged window, as the walk-through has a sliding windshield panel with a clear lower door.

This configuration offers easy access to the bow area and results in a much cleaner look.

The bow seating starts with a C-shaped settee offering comfortable lounging for at least six adults. Two Corian-topped pedestal tables can be dropped into the floor mounts, with one or both utilized at any time. The tabletops can also be used to fill the open area, whereby filler cushions can be installed to make one large sunpad. Stereo controls with speakers and a subwoofer, a dedicated cooler, six drink holders and a sunshade with stainless supports are all available. A cutout in the helm’s front seat backrest contains a fixed window to the lower cabin, and a blackout screen is included to keep the morning sun out.

THE MAIN ATTRACTION The cockpit is a well-designed social area that exemplifies the boat’s crossover DNA, thanks to the U-shaped settee to starboard.

There are two separate Corian cockpit tables, used together or individually. For ease of access to the tabletops, store them in dedicated slots under the seats. The tabletops also can be used to support the filler cushions, making the settee area another large lounge area. The two aft seat backrests flip forward, creating an additional sunpad/lounger oasis with an 36

aft-facing view, perfect for watching those in the water. Additional seating is to port.

Closer to the water, there’s a boat deck that steps down to a fixed swim platform integrated into the hull. Formula takes it one step further with an optional hydraulic platform right behind the swim platform, which allows for easier access to the water and creates a mini beach area.

AT THE CON Midship is the starboard-side helm, which is smartly laid out so key components are within easy reach of the captain. The standout feature is the angled dash that houses twin 16-inch Raymarine Axiom MFDs in a Liquid Black floating panel.

The console houses the leather-wrapped tilt steering, Mercury Marine SmartCraft VesselView engine monitoring display, several banks of switches, ICOM VHF, Rockford Fosgate stereo controller, three AC vents, four cupholders, USB ports and more. To the right are the Mercury digital throttle controls, Mercury joystick and Bennett trim tab actuator. Wide enough for three people, the helm seat offers exceptional support and adjustments for standing or sitting. A grabrail is mounted across the front of the dash and will come in handy as this is a very spry vessel.

Lighting up the twin Mercury Racing 520-hp gas engines with multiport electronic fuel injection connected to Bravo Three sterndrives, you can hear the throaty rumbles of the high-performance powerplants just loud enough to let you know there’s something special under the hood. The cruising sweet spot comes in at 3000 RPM, with a speed of 22.6 mph (average from reciprocal runs on flat water), burning 33.4 gph. At wide-open, we were flying at 50.1 mph and a burn rate of 81.2

gph. The ride was effortless as we skimmed the light chop, and bow rise was minimal.

Understand that Formula also offers this boat with triple Mercury 350 or 400 Verado outboards, or Mercury Racing 400R or 450R outboards. Any package will respond instantly thanks to the electronic shift/throttle controls.

With his kill switch safety cutoff clipped in, Spellberg performed a few tight turn maneuvers at near top speed. The 380 SSC heals over and really digs into the water thanks to the sharp entry, lifting strakes that keep the bow up and a 21-degree deadrise at the transom that holds a true course. The 380 is surprisingly responsive and agile — not bad for a 20,500-pound boat.

COOLNESS COUNTS To port is an outdoor kitchen with a molded sink that includes a glide-away self-cover, Elka faucet, Isotherm fridge with drawers and trash compartment with garbage pail mounted to the door for easy access. Storage compartments forward of the kitchen house a Cuisinart blender and flat-screen TV, cleverly keeping it out of the elements or prying eyes. Aft to port is a grill station with a Kenyon electric grill.

Hidden under the helm seat is a dedicated space for a Yeti Tundra 35 cooler, complete with slide-out guides and a recessed insert. Additionally, the bow’s sunshade stainless supports fit into the forward railing posts; just remove the plug

from the stanchion and the support fits right in, so there’s no need to drill extra holes.

CABIN COMFORTS As mentioned, yet surprising nonetheless, there is a lower, full-beam cabin that is mainly situated underneath the helm station.

Able to accommodate four people in a cabin with 6 feet, 5 inches of headroom, it adds another level of opportunity to enjoy the 380. Forward is an Ultraleather lounge seat that converts into either a dining area with high-gloss wood table or a berth area. More sleeping space is found aft under the deck; it’s a crawl-in queen berth but is roomy for adults and kids.

ou never forget your first kiss, or first boat, or first love. And for many boaters, at least one of their first loves was a Glastron.

Since the 1950s, Glastron has been at the forefront of marine design and performance, building fast, sleek, quality boats that turn heads and make hearts skip a beat.

My own first experience with a fast boat was in a little Glastron CVX16 with gold metalflake paint and what seemed like a 6-foot-tall Mercury outboard hanging off the transom.

On my very first day as a marine mechanic in 1986, I was asked to take that freshly repaired boat for a test drive. I had driven many of my grandfather’s boats growing up, but never something that small and quick.

Nervous about bringing the big Merc to life, I gently nosed the CVX16 out of the marina and into Barnegat Bay. As I slowly cracked open the throttle, that little Glastron suddenly took off like a rocket.

Somewhere around 45 mph, I felt an exhilaration I’d never experienced in a fast car. I “test drove” the boat for nearly an hour and was almost fired when I got back to the dock.

The ride in that Glastron marked the start of a 25-year career in the marine industry and a life-long passion for vessels of all shapes and sizes.

beat. Glastron boats still carry the same reputation for quality, style and performance.

That’s why I jumped at the chance to test run the new Glastron GTD 245 on Lake Cadillac in mid-Michigan.

The fall weather was blustery and cold when I pulled up to the Lake Cadillac waterfront, but the water was calm enough to make a test ride possible, yet bumpy enough to make it fun.

The sleek, black and tan, 24-foot Glastron was waiting at the dock where I got a good look from three sides. Although Glastron calls it a deckboat, it has a sleek, modern profile with a personality that falls somewhere between bowrider and wakeboarding machine.

The boat includes ingenious design features that strike a

balance between function and comfort. However, many of those features are not obvious at first glance.

Stepping aboard, the stern sports a wide, extremely functional swim platform with swim ladders available on both angled corners. In the cockpit, there is so much seating that it appears impossible to avoid stepping on the beautiful brown upholstery. However, when boarding from the stern, the starboard edge of the huge aft sunpad lifts to expose a dedicated path into the cockpit. The lifted edge also converts the sunpad into a lounge seat, or lift the entire sunpad to access the engine compartment.

At the helm, the traditional swivel bucket seat has been

replaced with a bench big enough for two. The twin bench also converts into bolsters or additional aft-facing seats.

At the port side, Glastron designed a small step into the gunnel to make boarding from the side easier. And, the seat below flips out of the way of sandy feet.

Forward, the bow seating creates a comfortable space with lots of storage. A cooler hides below the forward cushions, as well as just behind the anchor locker and forward boarding ladder. A removable bow table provides serving space for drinks and snacks.

The cockpit floor also hides storage large enough for skis or other general needs. Almost every surface throughout the boat conceals storage

or a cooler, or converts to a different configuration.

Even the helm station hides an unexpected surprise; lift the seating just forward of the windshield and an optional, roomy head with porta-potti and sink becomes accessible.

The boat also has USB ports strategically placed and cupholders everywhere. RGB rope lighting makes night trips more interesting, and handrails are always within easy reach.

FUN TO DRIVE

At the helm, the GTD 245 has modern Garmin touch screen controls. However, the dash also includes chrome accents and hooded gauges that are reminiscent of the original 1950s and ‘60s Glastron designs.

Although the GTD 245 can be ordered with outboard power, which provides additional cockpit space, the test boat was powered by a 300-hp Volvo Penta sterndrive.

As we fired it up, I pulled my jacket tighter in preparation for the chilly ride.

Out on the lake, the boat jumped out of the water with minimal bow rise and a smooth transition to planing speeds. We put the GTD 245 through a series of tight turns, with the boat handling like it was on rails at its 25 mph cruising speed. Wideopen throttle pushed the speedometer to 48 mph.

Partway through the ride, I realized I had let go of my jacket.

The Glastron is beautifully crafted and fun to drive.

It’s large enough to handle unexpected weather on the big lake, quick and nimble enough to pull wakeboarders, and includes luxury options that are perfect for a sunset cruise with wine and cheese.

And, as if all of that might not be impressive enough, the boat comes with a matching trailer, and the sport arch flips down so the boat can fit in a standard garage.

The new Glastron GTD 245 may become someone’s first boat or even their first love.

But for anyone who gets behind the wheel, it definitely won’t be their last Glastron. ★

Sailing is the Family Business How family fun begat a charter company.   

“

N

one of this would have happened if I had known how to camp,” says Tim Morris, talking about how his family charter businesses, Sailing Saugatuck and Sailing South Haven, came to be.

That’s Morris’s story and he’s sticking to it. His ignorance about the workings of camp stoves, tents and hiking boots gave him and his wife, Susan, little choice but to take their three children sailing instead. So in lieu of freeze-dried food and campfires, the three Morris children — Dominic, Erin and Melissa — learned to raise a mainsail, take the helm and sail into the wind, starting with a 21-foot traditional lapstrake wooden boat. It was the first of several, including a 44-foot Peterson design sloop IOR racer. The family used it for racing, but Morris calls it a floating camper.

Ultimately, this familial deficit on Tim Morris’s part ensured his children a future as avid sailors. For their youngest daughter, Erin Morris Baittinger, it meant going completely overboard (excuse our pun) and becoming a U.S. Coast Guard certified captain.

“My parents always had sailboats when we were growing up,” Baittinger says. “Every weekend we’d just pile on and cruise. We might do a one-day sail and spend time in port or hop from port to port. In Lake Michigan, we’d anchor and throw floatation devices into the water and jump in. I remember taking a long sail to South Manitou Island and how fun it was. Back then it was our family’s hobby — something we all did together. Now it’s my career.”

In keeping with the nautical theme that seems to define her life, Baittinger’s husband, Andrew, also chose a profession involving boats. The two, who have three young children and live in Petoskey, Michigan, met when she was crewing on the 170-foot schooner Mystic, a three-masted, gaff-rigged, square topsail schooner in Mystic, Connecticut — a job she held for three years. Andrew has some serious boat cred as well. A graduate of the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport, Rhode Island, he now works as a boatwright for the Irish Boat Shop with locations in Traverse City, Harbor Springs and Charlevoix.

When Baittinger moved back from Mystic to Michigan, the Morris family took sailing to the next level.

“Erin talked me into opening a charter boat business [in 2010],” Morris says, who was a custom cabinet maker. “We bought a six-passenger Gulfstar 37 sloop built in Florida that Susan and I found. It’s a bluewater cruiser with a fiberglass hull and teak trim — the kind of boat you see island hopping in the Caribbean.”

Equipped with starboard and port settees, and a cabin down below, passengers are encouraged to bring their own food and drink, including wine and beer (there’s a cooler onboard to keep it cold), and sit back and enjoy the sail. Or, if so inclined, they can pitch in — no matter their skill level — and help with the sails and lines.

“We named her the Margaret Ann after my aunt who was the coolest lady who ever walked the earth,” Morris says. “She just treated everybody like they were the most important person in the world and my kids were very close to her.”

The name makes sense; how it happened shows the intensity of the feeling for the boat’s namesake. “I told Erin to make a list of names she liked and I would too and then we’d decide,” Morris says. But when they compared lists, the father and daughter discovered each had written down only one name: Margaret Ann. Describing his sister Erin as basically a “superwoman,” Dominic Morris — who, though he works out of state, designed and maintains the company’s website and does its marketing and videography — says it was his sister’s hard work that transformed their small six-pack charter boat operation into the busiest and most popular sailing charter in Southwest Michigan.

“It’s the No. 1 tour in South Haven,” he continues, noting they sail four times a day from Memorial Day to the end of September.

Dominic is referring to Trip Advisor’s rating of Sailing South Haven as being the No. 1 of 13 tours in South Haven, while the company also has five out of five stars on Yelp.

The two-hour Sailing South Haven charter excursion travels along the Black River as it flows between the piers and into the lake. From there, the sails are trimmed according to the direction and strength of the winds.

Expanding the family dream

“Building on the success of our operation in South Haven, we finally were able to fulfill our family’s life-long dream of buying a schooner,” Dominic says about schooner Serenity, a 65-foot two-masted gaff-rigged schooner designed by Tom Colvin and built by Custom Steel Boats in Arapaho, North Carolina, which they bought last year. “It’s been a feat in itself getting Serenity ready for showtime but

we’re finally there. We couldn’t be happier to offer a laid-back, family friendly and authentic schooner experience with folks who are visiting and folks who live here.”

Originally built as a cargo schooner, the tall ship was later converted into a passenger vessel and, at the time the family purchased her, was a charter sailing out of Yorktown, Virginia. Now her homeport is Douglas, Michigan, a charming village on the Kalamazoo River just 18 miles north of South Haven.

Like Sailing South Haven, the new Sailing Saugatuck charter trips are two hours long. It’s a 40-minute journey from Douglas to Lake Michigan, past a changing topography of prairie wetlands and the historic downtowns of Douglas and Saugatuck, with their collection of boutiques, art galleries, wineries, cafes and homes — a mélange of 19th-century mansion-esque dwellings, as well as cute and cozy summer cottages. Once past the lighthouse, the options are straight west into the blue waters, north along the sand cliffs or south toward Oval Beach, named one of the Top 25 Beaches in the World by Condé Nast Traveler, MTV’s Top 5 Beaches in the USA and National Geographic Traveler’s Top Freshwater Beaches in the USA. Sailing Saugatuck offers two afternoon cruises and a sunset cruise, as well as two-hour customized private charters for up to 24 guests. Charters from both locations include a U.S. Coast Guard-certified captain and first mate aboard every trip. Like Sailing South Haven, passengers can bring their own food and drinks, including alcoholic beverages.

“We want those onboard to feel like it’s their boat when we sail,” Morris says. “It’s never about the names of the boat parts; our passengers can relax, they can watch, they can ask, they can help. It’s their trip — we want them to have fun.”

In some ways, Morris seems somewhat surprised by all their successes as a sailing charter. “I don’t think any of this would have ever happened if I’d known how to camp,” he repeats in a bemused tone.

“When I was out on the East Coast, I decided being back home and having a charter company would be a good fit,” Baittinger says, who, enviably, crewed the Mystic down to the Bahamas each winter. “After all, most of our favorite family memories are about sailing.” ★

any boaters have dreamed of adventures on the water, like rafting down the Mississippi alongside Mark Twain’s legendary character, Huck Finn. However, for Christopher J. Smith, grandson and namesake of Chris-Craft Boats founder Christopher Columbus Smith, adventures on the water have been a part of his everyday life.

Born into a family that could be called boating royalty, Chris Smith grew up on the grounds of his grandfather’s Algonac, Michigan, boatyard. The Chris-Craft factory, which could arguably be considered the birthplace of the modern pleasure boating industry, was the younger Chris Smith’s playground and summer school.

At 7 years old, Chris began hanging around the Chris-Craft plant, although

his mother told him he could not play around the waterfront facility alone until he learned to swim. His older brother, Chuck, helped expedite his swimming lessons by shoving Chris off the dock with a rope tied around his waist and pulling him back to safety whenever he slipped below the surface.

After his grandfather retired and left his sons at the company’s helm, Chris spent summers and weekends at work with his father, Bernie. During the day, he wandered through the various workshops and watched as the mahogany hulls were assembled.

The company’s employees were Chris’s early teachers. Spending time on the shop floor, he learned how many of the tools and machines were used to create each piece of the early Chris-Craft

runabouts. He also began performing odd jobs that added to his knowledge of the manufacturing process.

By the age of 9, Chris was test driving newly built boats and helping to move them around the Chris-Craft docks.

The experience taught Chris to deal with unexpected engine problems, steering failures, and many other issues that arose. It also added to his knowledge of the boat’s mechanical components and operations.

An informal education

Like Huck Finn, the Mississippi River played a part in Chris Smith’s early years. He often rode along when his father or uncles delivered boats from Algonac to other ports. While

operating one of three 41-foot cruisers destined for Florida, Chris’s dad became ill enough to be hospitalized while the Chris-Craft armada passed through Chicago.

With Bernie Smith out of commission, the crew was stuck in the city and short one captain. Chris’s Uncle Jay, president of the company, asked then-14-year-old Chris if he thought he was capable of piloting the brand-new 41-foot Chris-Craft cruiser down the mighty river to the boat’s Gulf Coast destination.

Of course, Chris said “Yes.” At 20 years old, Chris had grown into a skilled craftsman and knew he wanted to work for the company. However, his father insisted that he attend college.

Chris took two years of classes, returning to the plant each summer to continue his informal education.

During his second summer at home, Chris asked to drop out of college and work for Chris-Craft since he loved working with his hands. His father agreed but under one condition: After two years, Chris was to return to school and pick up where he left off.

Chris never went back. Instead, he began working full-time at the plant as his natural engineering talents developed.

He soon began creating the prototypes of each new Chris-Craft model released by the company. After Chris-Craft’s artists created drawings for a new model, it was Chris’s job to create patterns for each mahogany piece that would fit together into the new boat’s prototype, or Hull No. 1.

Chris Smith’s engineering talents were not limited to the company’s new boats.

When a friend asked him to partner in a kit plane in 1955, Chris didn’t like several aspects of the aircraft’s design and altered the plane’s blueprints in order to build a better, more attractive plane.

When the FAA came to inspect the finished product, it had so many alterations that the aircraft had to be designated as a “Chris Smith design.”

Chris Smith’s skills as a boatbuilder were put to use in many projects outside the company as well. He was quick to

help friends with restorations and built new vessels with family members.

Chris was asked by a friend if he would help restore an old Chris-Craft Sea Skiff found beside a barn, but the boat turned out to be beyond repair.

Instead of attempting to restore the vessel, Chris measured the original boat piece by piece, burned it and then built a perfect copy instead.

In 2016, his 14-year-old greatgrandson, Zachary, asked Chris to help him build a custom 25-foot runabout. After looking over several sets of existing plans, the 89-year-old boatbuilder combined the best features of two existing designs into something unique and began construction.

However, when the boat was nearly finished, Chris suffered a stroke that left him without the use of his right side.

The boat was completed by Zachary and his Uncle Mark, Chris Smith’s son.

With the brand-new, one-of-a-kind Chris Smith design sitting on the dock, Mark enlisted some help to carry his father down the dock and place him in the boat. When it left

the dock, three of the four living Smith family generations went for the maiden voyage in the boat they had built together.

Family legacy

Chris Smith’s family was instrumental in the start of the pleasure boating industry. Although his contributions to the company’s success story may not be as well-known as his grandfather’s, Chris’s 40-year career at Chris-Craft is remarkable.

Chris Smith created the first hull of nearly every model to come out of the Chris-Craft factories for decades.

He helped produce the company’s very first fiberglass boat and oversaw the production of the company’s largest vessel, the 74-foot steel-hulled Roamer.

Christopher J. Smith no longer lives on the water, having moved inland to his property in Holland, Michigan; however, several antique Chris-Craft models sit in the large steel barn behind his home.

Chris’s basement also contains a shrine to the family’s legacy. Early

photos of his grandfather hang on the walls, while boat racing trophies won by his father, and one by his mother, are proudly displayed on a shelf overhanging a row of pristine, antique Chris-Craft outboards.

In one corner of the room sits the original workbench used by his grandfather to start the company. In another corner sits the drafting table that once sat in his office at the factory.

A custom-built rowboat-shaped display holds a copy of the Chris-Craft catalog from every year but one.

Pictures and artifacts from Chris Smith’s life of adventure on the water are visible everywhere you look.

At 92, Chris’s memory is still remarkable. He can recall nearly endless stories from the decades he has spent at the legendary boatbuilder’s factories. However, one small fact is just as incredible as any of the epic tales he is quick to share: In nearly 100 years of adventures on the water, Chris Smith never received a paycheck from any company but Chris-Craft. ★

Hall of Fame

Last September, the Antique Boat Museum (ABM) in Clayton, New York, opened its new Hall of Fame exhibit. When the renowned museum announced its first inductees, honoring certain individuals who have made an impact on the boating community, Chris Smith was on that list.

“Chris possesses a marvelous memory for the precise operations and details of each step in the Chris-Craft’s boat building procedure,” a statement from the Antique Boat Museum read.

“He might be the only person who has experienced the complete building procedure and understands the Smith family’s management style that resulted in the company’s decades of success.

Chris has shared his knowledge to give readers a remarkable inside story of a great American boat building company in the book ‘Building Chris-Craft: Inside the Factories.’”

P

arry Sound is the largest natural harbor in Ontario’s Georgian Bay, the world’s largest freshwater archipelago of some 30,000 islands.

Named for the famed Arctic explorer William Edward Parry, the Sound is nestled in the heart of UNESCO’s Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve.

Parry Sound’s history began as a transportation hub for First Nations peoples, with the harbor situated on a natural canoe route that snakes through the 30,000 islands and connects the Ontario interior to the St. Lawrence River. This route later became the European explorers’ ticket to the lucrative fur trade.

During the lumbering era, loggers believed the dramatic tracts of virgin pine could never be exhausted — but they proved themselves wrong by the early 1920s when the towering forests were entirely gone. Commercial fishing in Parry Sound was another example of extraordinary success leading to industry demise when overfishing took its toll, exacerbated by the introduction of invasive species.

Since the 1920s, however, the lakes have rebounded and fish are once again abundant.

The port is storied with sailing and steamship lore, as treacherous Georgian Bay storms claimed vessels like the Waubuno, sunk with all hands in 1879. Later, as the economy evolved, rail service was established in the area in 1897. Today, tourism is the mainstay of the community, and major rail lines and the Trans-Canada Highway run through town. These, along with beautiful Georgian Bay waterways, bring adventure-seekers from far and wide to Parry Sound.

Today in the Sound

The area is a gunkholer’s paradise, with hundreds of great places to drop the hook. And when mariners feel the need for a bit of civilization and provisions, they’ll find the “Jewel of the 30,000 Islands” — the town of Parry Sound. Unlike many Georgian Bay ports that are typically on the outskirts of town, Parry Sound Harbour is right in the heart of Parry Sound, with almost everything mariners need within walking distance. Ships approach Parry Sound either north or south of Parry Island, which protects the Sound from southerly blows. The deepest channel can be found north of Rose Island; while well-marked, captains are reminded to always watch charts and keep a sharp lookout as a missed mark might put you on the Georgian Bay’s notoriously unforgiving rock.

As one of the world’s deepest freshwater ports, Parry Sound is a bustling harbor with recreational boaters, annual summer visits by tall ships, seaplanes taking off

and landing, and an occasional cruise ship docking at the Parry Sound Town Dock. But don’t worry about Key West-style congestion, cruise ships dock only about a dozen times during the season. If you come on your own craft, Big Sound Marina on Bob’s Point and the affiliated Town Dock are ready to welcome transients, with 130 slips for boats up to 70 feet, 30and 50-amp power, pump-out, showers and laundry facilities. Harbormaster George Stivrins notes that mariners can get every necessity either on property or nearby; there are 10 restaurants within a 15-minute walk. Fuel is available from nearby Parry Sound Marine or on the south shore at Sound Boat Works.

By land or by sea — or air

Parry Sound is just a 2.5-hour drive from Toronto, and if you’re not coming on your own keel, you can still see the waterside of Parry Sound and beautiful Georgian Bay. The Island Queen Cruise departs daily in season from the waterfront, and features morning and afternoon cruises. Nearby, the M.V. Chippewa III tempts passengers with gourmet dinner cruises, destination cruises to restaurants on Craganmor Island or Frying Pan Island, and craft beer tasting cruises featuring local Trestle Brewing Company libations — also available anytime at the craft brewery’s taproom in town.

You can also book passage on a Great Lakes cruise ship and visit many ports including Parry Sound.

Choose from the Pearl Seas Cruises’ Pearl Mist or the upscale Ponant Lines’ Le Champlain; the latter just started visiting Parry Sound in 2019. The town welcomes a new ship this spring, the Hanseatic Inspiration, owned and operated by Hapag-Lloyd.

Somehow, Harbormaster Stivrins manages to squeeze these occasional cruise ships in on the Town Dock.

Georgian Bay Airways’ seaplanes take off right from the Sound to show passengers aerial vistas of Georgian Bay’s rugged coastline and 30,000 islands. Try a “fly and dine” tour; the seaplane ducks into famous Henry’s Fish Restaurant on Frying Pan Island for lunch, where you’ll find the best pickerel (aka walleye) you’ve ever had.

Water, water, everywhere

Parry Sound features watersports of all stripes. Rent kayaks, paddleboards and canoes at White Squall Town Shop, and stock up on all the clothing and gear you need for your expedition. For underwater adventure, you’ll find Clear Water Scuba, which offers instruction, air fills and a fully equipped dive boat. Diver’s Nook features instruction, shipwreck

dives, and wall and geological dives; book a full day trip and enjoy your lunch break on the beautiful shores of Georgian Bay. Black Feather, in nearby Seguin, has river and Georgian Bay paddling excursions, kayak and hiking wilderness adventure tours in the area, as well as international excursions.

Tee it up

Golf to your heart’s content at The Ridge at Manitou, a Thomas McBroom-designed beauty nestled among granite outcroppings. The Ridge features a golf academy, appropriately rustic clubhouse and a lakeside dining room and patio overlooking Lake Manitouwabing.

Or try Seguin Valley Golf Course, just south of Parry Sound. After 18 holes and lots of fresh Georgian Bay air, tame your hunger and thirst at Seguin Valley’s Bar and Grill, with Ontario’s traditional poutine (French fries topped with cheese curds and gravy) or fish and chips dipped in house-made Muskoka craft lager beer batter.

Visit nearby MacTier, Ontario, and Rocky Crest Resort, where golf on the granite- and hemlock-lined fairways goes hand in hand with stellar dining options in the beautiful log clubhouse. Prop your feet on the giant natural stone hearth at the Green Bistro while enjoying an adult beverage followed by penne alla boscaiola, a delicious dish made with smoked sausage, mushrooms and scallions in a silky rosé sauce. You can find casual dining at the resort’s Bayside restaurant, where a sunny patio boasts a nautical flare. Or gaze over Lake Joseph at Windows at Rocky Crest while you enjoy renowned Ontario beef or rack of lamb dressed with triple crunch mustard and local honey.

Around town

Mariners with a penchant for hockey will be glad to know that Big Sound Marina and Town Dock are neighbors to native son’s Bobby Orr Hall of Fame.

Here, you can try your hand at being a sportscaster in the Play-By-Play Booth, or shoot a few pucks into the Top Shot Electronic Hockey Net. Next door is the Charles W. Stockey Centre; the 480-seat performing arts center’s annual Festival of The Sound brings classical and jazz musicians to town mid-July through mid-August. Programs range from Latin jazz to big bands to Beethoven — and Canada Day features a special floating jazz cruise aboard the Island Queen.

Summer on-water festivals include the Wayfarer Ontario Championships Big Sound Challenge, as well as the Laser Sailing Regatta.

According to Parry Sound Tourism’s Vanessa Backman, “You’ll find surprisingly sophisticated shopping in Parry Sound.” Among the many offerings, you can pamper yourself at three spas: Above & Beyond Your Expectations, Perfectly Pampered Day Spa, or Georgian Oasis Spa. Add to your art collection at area galleries and studios. At Artistic Endeavors, local artwork and souvenirs are on display, and 18 James Street offers art from a variety of artists with a focus on Georgian Bay paintings. Pottery enthusiasts will love the area’s three studios: Muddy Handshake Pottery, Northwinds Pottery and Toad Hill Pottery. I Branched Out features the latest in live-edge wood tables, benches and board games.

Or try Huckleberry’s, a specialty retailer of Canadian wood home and cottage furnishings.

Bearly Used Books features a huge assortment of good reads and comfy chairs for perusing your selections. Hemp Tent showcases fair trade and Canadian-made clothing and gifts, while The Wolf Den’s trading post-style store features moose hide and deerskin moccasins, Ojibway porcupine quill baskets and dreamcatchers. Just Icing Boutique offers women’s clothing and jewelry. Bayside Depot, right underneath the longest trestle bridge in Ontario, is the place to select local crafts and get your picnic supplies for a shore-side lunch; you can even come by dinghy and pull up to the public boat dock. Beverly’s is the source for gift baskets chock full of Canadian and local products, while Orr’s Fine Meats and Deli is a great picnic supply stop.

Fresh produce, smoked meats and fish, baked goods and local crafts are readily available at two summer farmers markets. Parry Sound Waterfront Market is conveniently held at the Town Dock every Saturday in season; or a 10-minute walk to Market Square will take you to Tuesday’s Farmers Market.

For stocking up the boat, Sobey’s, No Frills and Walmart are about two miles from the marina; if you need a lift back with your provisions, the local taxi will take you anywhere in town for a flat $10 (CAN) fee.

Casual options include Tailwinds Restaurant at the seaplane base; its fish and chips is a favorite with nearby Big Sound Marina guests. Canadian home cooking is available at both Trappers and Country Gourmet Café. Or dinghy across the harbor to Glenn Burney Lodge in nearby Seguin. Here, the house-made smoked board with hot smoked trout, candied salmon, pickled pickerel, and trout pate looks yummy, as does the yellow perch wrap with red onion slaw and frites. The adjacent The Museum on Tower Hill provides historical context for visitors with rotating exhibits; next door, Tower Hill Heritage Garden nestles on a hill overlooking the Sound, with a beautiful walk along flagstone paths, rock gardens, ponds and gardens. Keep things buzzing with a visit to the Parry Sound and Area Community Apiary, where you can learn about beekeeping and take part in a honey tasting.

W

ith boat ownership comes the inevitable responsibility of boat maintenance.

Fortunately, if you’re anywhere along the western Lake Michigan area, Waukegan, Illinois-based Larsen Marine is there to help.

“Larsen Marine is conveniently located and serves all Chicago harbors, all harbors north [of the city], and around Milwaukee,” says Tom Ogden, the director of sales and marketing.

It all began in 1933 when Milt Larsen started the business in Waukegan, about an hour and a half north of Chicago, just shy of the Wisconsin border. He borrowed $500 for a marine railway boat lift. Within eight years, the facility had enough room to store 40 boats, and within 10 years had a lift that could handle 45-foot boats. By 1975, the facility could accommodate 300 boats.

Bay Belle Marie

When I was 5 years old, my family was invited to spend a weekend with friends at their family cottage on Lake Erie. It was great to see the biggest body of water I had ever seen, but it was the sight of the host family’s 19-foot Lyman dropping anchor in front of the house that left an indelible impression on me. The sound of the Gray Marine flathead straight 6 engine (all of 100 hp) was music to my ears!

I didn’t know it then but that Lyman became my “Mother Duck” boat that all the other boats in my life would be measured against.

Fast forward a few years (decades actually); my wife and I live on the West River, just south of Annapolis on the Chesapeake Bay, and we had a great dock with an empty lift that was begging for a new boat. So I started looking for, what else, a Lyman and find a beautiful 1973 26-foot Hardtop Sleeper in New Hampshire on Lake Winnipesaukee.

With Hull No. R-1638, she was laid up in February 1973 as the first of the last five 26-foot Clinker hulls built that year — the last year that Lyman produced wood boats. She needed a little bit of love, but more than anything else she needed a new home so we bought her, named her Bay Belle Marie and brought her down to the West River where we have enjoyed caring for her and cruising her all over the Bay. We joined the Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS) Chesapeake Bay Chapter and have taken her to the annual ACBS Boat Festival in St. Michaels, Maryland, on Father’s Day weekend, where she has won awards for Best Utility, Best of Show-Lyman and Competitor’s Choice.

In 2015, we went to Clayton, New York, for the ACBS show because the featured manufacturer that year was Lyman. As we were walking the docks, we saw a 23-foot Offshore that had the same blue color scheme as our Hardtop Sleeper.

We got to chatting with the owner, Jeremy Goldstein, and told him how we had found our boat on Lake Winnipesaukee. Jeremy’s eyes lit up and after a few quick qualifying questions he said, “That’s my boat!” Jeremy had completed the initial restoration for a family in Sandusky, Ohio, almost 20 years prior to our meeting.

It was one of his first major restorations and he gave us the complete rundown on everything he did, including new solid teak decks and a rebuilt hardtop.
