I
t’s been an unseasonably long winter in the Great Lakes region, so the June issue couldn’t come soon enough. As we work on this cruising-themed issue in mid-April (which feels more like January 103, not April 14), I’m clinging to the stories of fun-filled trips, cruising destinations and sea trials. Just the sight of the bikini-clad models in the Boat Tests and Spotlights (starting on p. 36) make me feel a little bit warmer. Speaking of cruising destinations, one you’ll want to add to your list is Buffalo, New York (p. 56). What was once considered a Rust Belt town is now a vibrant, redeveloped waterfront destination with breweries, summertime events, restaurants and parks. If you’re considering embarking on the Great Loop, check out contributor Marty Richardson’s insightful guide on cruising the Loop from Chicago to Alton, Illinois (p. 52) — the first feature in a three-part series. Be sure to read the July and August issues, where Marty continues her journey down the Mississippi. Whether you’re rolling on the river or anchored up in your favorite cove, you’ll most likely want to play some tunes. And with today’s marine stereo systems, you’ll be able to blast the oldies or Top 40s with ease. I’m always sure to pack sunscreen for any trip on the boat. Most people don’t realize how much sun you can get while cruising — even indirectly as it reflects off the water. We always apply sunscreen generously to both adults and kids before getting underway!

I thought I’d let you know after 38 years on the hard and a nine-year restoration, we are ramping up for a Holiday relaunch this summer. Has the same boat ever been featured in your magazine 68 years apart? In addition to a family cruiser (my wife grew up on her), I hope to one day use her in an adaptive sailing program with disabled vets. Algonac Antique and Classic Boat Show 2018 Ring in the start of summer at the annual Algonac Boat Show, a weekend of fun, music, on-water activities, socializing and showing off winter projects. The 2018 event — which takes place on June 23 at the Algonac Harbour Club Marina — is the 33rd annual Algonac Boat Show, as well as the Michigan Chapter Antique & Classic Boat Society’s 40th anniversary. A more relaxed format this year will feature a non-judged event. The show will feature special awards, including “Best of Show” and “Best Outboard.” An informal boat parade up the river will conclude the day. There will be 80 to 100 classic boats displayed both in water and on land. Classic boat rides are available to the public from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Industry Mourns Loss of Tom Haag

Tom Haag, vice president of Colony Marine and MBIA board chairman, passed away Friday, March 30, 2018. He will be dearly missed. Tom was a lifetime boater, born and raised on the St. Clair River in Algonac, Michigan. He was a long-time MBIA member and supporter, as well as a 31-year industry veteran as vice president of Colony Marine in St. Clair Shores. Chicago Sailing Adds New Charter Yacht
Chicago Sailing has added a classic boat to its fleet, a 1935 50-foot Chicago-built Grebe motoryacht, NAIDA. Shortly after completion, she was shipped out to the west coast where she spent several years between LA and Catalina island. NAIDA is rumored to have been owned by Humphrey Bogart. At some point in the late 60s, NAIDA was moved to Olympia, Washington. Chicago Sailing purchased her in January 2018, and she arrived in Chicago via truck on Valentine’s Day. Overall, NAIDA is in phenomenal shape, but like any other 83-year-old boat there is constant upkeep. The entire electrical system has been replaced since arriving, and the teak decks are being refinished. She has many original pieces, including Tiffany lamps and chandeliers, stained glass portholes and a full mahogany interior. Mercury Launches Vessel Config Dealers and boatbuilders listen up! Mercury Marine has released a new software management configurator called Vessel Config, which guides customers through the configuration process to ensure they are ordering the right Mercury controls and rigging products for their boats. The software “turns boatbuilders and dealers into virtual engineers, giving them the ability to configure complex systems without assistance,” says John Buelow, Mercury Marine vice president of global category management. Products included in Vessel Config include most of the controls and rigging portfolio of parts for new boats or re-power applications. Premier Pontoons Exits Bankruptcy
Premier Pontoons has announced that it has exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company, under new ownership, will continue to manufacture boats for distribution nationwide. Premier first filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2017. Under Chapter 11, it reorganized and was purchased by Premier Pontoon Holdings, a Minnesotabased company. Premier founders Bob and Betty Menne will continue at the company under the new ownership. Lori Melbostad will become Premier’s executive vice president. Rick Gallagher will serve as the new CEO. “The reorganization has Premier poised to increase production levels across each of our lines,” Gallagher says. “Several innovative projects paused over the past year are resuming. Chicago to be “Two Waterfront City”
Bay Marine Signs Monte Carlo Yachts
During the second Building on Burnham address, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel outlined the future of Chicago as a “two waterfront city.” Rahm announced that 985 acres of parks have been acquired and 5.5 miles of waterfront access have been developed under the plan. The comprehensive plan to invest in the lakefront, the Chicago River, natural areas and recreational opportunities in neighborhoods across the city will continue, with plans to acquire additional parkland and further develop the waterfront in the coming years. The Building on Burnham plan includes the construction of a new riverfront trail from Ping Tom Memorial Park to Lake Street, as well as developing the public space as part of the North Branch Framework Plan. Detroit Yacht Club Sesquicentennial of a survivor. hrough economic booms and busts, World Wars, and social and cultural shifts in recreational preferences, the Detroit Yacht Club (DYC) has defied the odds and is celebrating its 150th anniversary with an uptick in membership and a spirit of optimism about its future. “We are very proud that we have made it to 150 years, especially when you look at the major events that have taken place,” says DYC Commodore Ray Batt. “There are a lot of things that could have taken this club down, but there’s enough wherewithal within the membership to keep it going.” The DYC was founded in 1868, “just a few years after the end of the Civil War, by gentlemen in Detroit who were interested in boating,” says Mark Lifter, a 30-year member and president of the Detroit Yacht Club Foundation (DYCF). The Foundation is an independent nonprofit that raises funds to care for the historic clubhouse, the private club’s fourth home. Dedicated in 1923, the Mediterranean Revival-style building anchors its own 11-acre island at Detroit’s Belle Isle Park in the Detroit River — the international waterway between the U.S. and Canada. The yacht club, at 93,000 square feet, is the largest in the United States. Through the hard times In the “Roaring Twenties,” Detroit was enjoying enormous growth and good times. Many of the skyscrapers that dot the city skyline a few miles west of the DYC were built in the 1920s. The club’s membership roster included Detroit notables like industrialist, boatbuilder and record-setting hydroplane racer Gar Wood. The yacht club reached 3,000

members and planned its new facility for an anticipated membership of up to 6,000. Although it was able to keep the lights on during the ensuing crash and Great Depression, its membership roll had peaked. George D. Mason, architect of the Detroit Masonic Temple and Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel, designed the clubhouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The DYC features a restaurant and bar, meeting and function rooms, a grand ballroom, sweeping staircases, fireplaces, rich woodwork and locally-made Pewabic tile. “It was built extremely well,” Lifter says. “We’re looking forward to its centennial in 2023.” To reach that milestone, however, costly maintenance that had been neglected during the hard times of the late 2000s had to be addressed. In 2011, members formed the nonprofit DYCF to finance necessary repairs and enhancements. “Other clubs have foundations, but Detroit’s is unique in that it’s for historical preservation purposes,” Lifter explains. “[The foundation has] provided us with another source of funds to improve the clubhouses’ physical condition and appearance.” Lifter ticks off the projects completed to date, from plumbing, windows and gutters to the red-tiled roof and stucco exterior. “We are able to restore what I think is a gem of Detroit.” “It’s a spectacular building,” Commodore Batt says. A New Yorker who came to Detroit in 1998 by way of Dallas, Batt had never owned a boat but gravitated to the DYC as a convenient place for business meetings and as a familycentric way to spend time. “It was the perfect venue for me and my family.” After acquiring his family’s first boat, “it turned out to be our home-away-from-home — our cottage on the water.” While many members spend summers on their sail or powerboats, Batt stresses, “Our club has a very wide reach. That’s very important to our future. We must be relevant to people’s lifestyles today.”

Club within a club In addition to its 352 boat slips, the DYC has indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a fitness center, children’s activities, and tennis and racquetball courts. “Clubs within the club” appeal to a range of interests, from bicycling, reading and gardening, to golf, skiing, hunting and kayaking the Detroit River. The Flying Scots Sailing Program offers instruction aboard 19-foot sailboats and crewing opportunities, particularly for members without boats. That’s how John Glotzbach became involved at the DYC nearly 45 years ago. “We didn’t have a boat; dad taught the Flying Scots classes,” Jill Zakerski recalls while shopping for DYC logo items with her father on a recent visit from her home in North Carolina. “I had some of the best summers of my life here,” Zakerski says of the sailing lessons and day-camps she attended from the age of eight. She met her husband, Dan, at a fireworks party at the club, and five Julys later the couple held their wedding reception in DYC’s ballroom. But it wasn’t until they moved south and sought a place to sail that she fully appreciated what special playground she had at the Detroit Yacht Club.
Craig Homicz, who 20 years ago surprised his wife with a DYC membership, agrees. “I thought the best way to get a boat would be to join the club,” he says with a laugh. “During our first four or five years [of having the boat], we traveled around and then thought, ‘Why do we go anywhere else — there’s nothing else like this!’” Batt is encouraged that the DYC has experienced its best member retention rate in recent years, with current membership at about 800. That number is inching upward and includes younger people moving from the social/ non-boating category to boating memberships. “Two things bode well for the future of the Detroit Yacht Club,” Batt says, citing recent improvements to its setting in the 982-acre Belle Isle Park and the rebounding of Detroit. “As companies move their people downtown, they’ll discover this is an easy-to-get-to place with green space and leisure options that are hard to find in the city.” Homicz, whose lark of a membership turned into a life-long love of the DYC, says, “You gotta find a hobby like this — it’s good for the soul.” ★

South Bass Island & Put-in-Bay Of all the Lake Erie Islands, South Bass, located just north of Catawba Island, may be the best known. The village of Put-in-Bay is a popular summer getaway destination for Ohioans and those in the neighboring states, with more than 750,000 visitors flocking to the island each year. While South Bass is popular for its nightlife, there are plenty of other activities for all ages. Some say the island’s colorful shops and laid-back atmosphere feels like stepping into the Florida Keys. For a taste of Florida, don’t miss the Conch Fritters served at The Keys, one of many dock-and-dine options available on the island. Like nearby Kelleys Island, South Bass is accessed by private watercraft, one of two ferry services, or by plane. Once on the island, bikes and golf carts are favored over cars as they are easier to maneuver and provide more access to coveted island parking. Those who arrive by boat to Put-in-Bay’s thriving downtown district will find it easy to traverse the local shopping, restaurant and bar scene on foot. Live entertainment is plentiful, and a variety of festivals and events are offered throughout the summer season. Put-in-Bay has several public and private marinas that offer daily and overnight dockage rates. You’ll find hundreds of docks available in the vicinity of downtown. Many docks are on a first come, first served basis, so arrive early if you plan to visit the island during busy weekends, holidays or events. Some public marinas require boaters

to raft off, so be prepared with boat bumpers. Amenities like electric and Wi-Fi vary, and a public bathhouse is located in DeRivera Park. On South Bass Island you’ll discover yacht clubs, wineries and restaurants serving everything from lobster bisque to tasty crepes. You’ll also find the touristy quirk that makes every great getaway notable, like Crystal Cave, the world’s largest geode whose tours kept Heineman’s winery afloat during Prohibition. Discover Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, the largest Doric column in the world. Erected in 1915, the towering edifice and visitor center commemorates Commodore Perry’s War of 1812 victory at the Battle of Lake Erie, and celebrates the lasting peace between Britain, Canada and the United States that followed the war. The top of the monument offers an incredible bird’s eye view of the surrounding islands. Put-in-Bay — often referred to as the “Walleye Capital of the World” — is a hotspot for fishing walleye and perch. If you’ve never tasted perch, head to Goat Soup and Whiskey about a half-mile from the village for one of the best perch tacos you’ll ever eat. Looking for an adult beverage? You’ll find plenty of options to quench your thirst, from the historic Americana-clad Roundhouse Bar to the Mojito Bar with outside swinging seats. Looking for more elbow room? The Beer Barrel Saloon — or “The Barrel” as its known by the locals — has a 400-foot bar, the world’s third longest bar. Overnight accommodations include a boutique hotel, condos, private cottages, and campsites and yurts at South Bass State Park on the south side of the island. Gibraltar Island Visible across the harbor from downtown Put-in-Bay is the small, private island that’s home to the Stone Laboratory — Ohio State University’s research and teaching laboratories and the oldest freshwater biological field station in the nation. Researchers study the Lake Erie ecosystem, which includes endangered water snakes found only on the Lake

Erie islands. The grounds are open to the public for tours once a week and are accessible by water taxi. Gibraltar Island was originally owned by Jay Cooke, a financial genius who issued millions of dollars to the federal government to stave off bankruptcy during the Civil War. He completed Cooke’s Castle in 1865, and the turret on the Victorian-Gothic mansion is visible from Put-in-Bay. The estate once entertained notable Ohioans, including Rutherford B. Hayes and Grover Cleveland. Cooke’s daughter eventually sold the island to Franz Theodore Stone who then donated the property to Ohio State University. The mansion is currently undergoing a renovation to be used as a conference center and is only visible from the exterior. Other notable spots on the island include a small section of glacier grooves and Perry’s Lookout, where it’s rumored that a scout for Commodore Perry spotted a fleet approaching the island from Canada. Kayakers who paddle around the island are in for a special treat as they pass through the Needle’s Eye, one of about a dozen natural stone arches found in the state of Ohio. Middle Bass Island North of the bustling South Bass Island is the more subdued Middle Bass. The Middle Bass Island State Park marina has a total of 184 slips, the majority of which are transient. Daily dockage is on a first come, first served basis. The Middle Bass Island Yacht Club offers reciprocal day and overnight dockage to members of the ILYA. Birding is plentiful as the island is located along a migratory

bird path. While songbirds are abundant during the spring and fall, you’re likely to see shorebirds and waterfowl the rest of the year in Petersen Woods and Kuehnle Wildlife Area, a 20-acre marsh on the island. The Lonz Winery was once the largest producer of wine in the United States. After a tragic accident in 2000, the winery shut down and sat vacant until the state of Ohio purchased the property and began renovations. While some of the building was beyond repair, the incredible façade was saved. Visitors are welcome to tour the grounds to view the original mid-1800s restored presshouse. Camping and lodging is available at the Caribbeanthemed St. Hazards Resort or Middle Bass Lakeshore Condominiums. And don’t miss the chance to try walleye bites and beer-battered fries at J.F. Walleyes. North Bass Island North Bass is off the beaten path as far as islands go. Accessible only by private boat, charter or aircraft, this isolated island is two miles from Canada. While a handful of residents live on the island, the state of Ohio has purchased the public areas where visitors can hike, picnic, kayak and observe wildlife. Visitors can also explore the vineyards, post office, schoolhouse and chapel, which continues to hold Sunday services. A small boat dock is available, but you will need to pack in all your own supplies, including food and drinking water. Like the other islands, the sunsets are remarkable. The Milky Way is visible on a clear night — a reward for the adventurous who relish primitive camping and don’t mind pit toilets. ★

n an age of self-driving automobiles and features like lane assist, enhanced cruise control and automatic braking, it’s no wonder boaters are asking if they can add similar features on their boat. With the advent of marine autorouting in various forms (despite the added complications of being afloat), boaters are on their way to safer and easier passages. We are, however, still a long way from being able to sit back and let technology take over; autorouting is not yet the sole answer to planning a route and still requires input and corrections from the captain.

Auto Guidance Garmin’s Auto Guidance is now available on most of Garmin’s current chartplotters simply by purchasing and inserting a BlueChart g2 Vision HD chart card into the display. In its new and updated format, these cards can allow for automated route creation based on the owner’s input of draft and overhead height. Pick a point you want to go to on your multifunction display and the Garmin algorithms will create a route for you to follow. Previous versions of this software were less capable of creating challenging routes through complicated areas and channels. The software almost always opted for a longer (and safer) outside or deeper water passage. New Auto Guidance versions do a better job of routing more complicated courses and will now guide you through shorter and more complex routes. Even though there have been successful upgrades to the algorithms, adjustments should be made to the route prior to getting underway. To get an idea of how well and how limited these automatically-created routes can be, practice with some waypoints you’re familiar with and see how closely the autoroute matches your typical route. Try a few routes and you will get an idea of how the auto-created routes differ

from your personal preferences. You will likely find that the software takes you to places (or close to places) you may not go to as a prudent mariner. The good news is that editing these routes is easy; you can shift waypoints along the route or enter new ones mid-route to edit and modify the magenta course line to one more navigable. Dock-to-dock Autorouting Navionics (recently purchased by Garmin) also offers autorouting with its Dock-to-dock Autorouting, available as a free trial on the Navionics Boating app or as a paid app version that includes the comprehensive Navionics+ charting. Unlike Garmin’s autorouting, Navionics users must first select their routing start and finish points on a smart device using the app. It’s there that the autoroute is created and can then be uploaded to a capable Raymarine, Lowrance, Simrad or B&G display. Navionics does this to allow for constant updates to their cartography files for the most up-to-date autorouting possible. As with the Garmin software, it’s advisable to try a few known routes first to see how the suggested route compares to your typical route. You will likely find that some editing is still necessary; as both manufacturers suggest, the routes should be used for planning purposes only. Challenge considerations All autorouting software and algorithms still seem to have particular issues with certain obstacles, such as navigation aids. The same can be true with such things as traffic separation zones. These are either ignored or just flagged as a warning, but rules may not to be factored into the route. Other issues that a prudent captain would also consider include strong currents and shifting shoals. These too might not come into play in an autoroute. Relying solely on an autoroute is putting a lot of faith on electronic chart data, software and algorithms that still can’t replace the common sense of a knowledgeable captain plotting his or her own route. There may be a day in the not so distant future when you turn on your chartplotter, pick a point to travel to and the boat does the rest. But for now, autorouting is just an aid to navigation and should be treated as such. Edit and review your generated routes using them as a starting point. Appropriate planning and caution while using these routes will get you to your destination safely; after all, there is no “recalculating” once you are hard aground. ★

In Search of Stability Today’s marine-stabilization technology provides a better ride for all aboard.
W
e’ve all been there. You head out on the water for a memorable day with family and friends, but it becomes memorable for all the wrong reasons. You’re battling lumpy or even rough seas. Dishes clatter in the cupboard. Cups spill, and snacks go airborne. Someone takes a tumble — or even worse, seasickness strikes. Once that happens, it’s game over. Other than abandoning ship (which may seem perfectly reasonable in that moment), the only lasting remedy for seasickness is an immediate return to shore. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Today’s marinestabilization technology seems almost magical in its ability to reduce that nausea-inducing rocking and rolling, and to provide a more comfortable ride for all aboard. Best of all, it’s readily available, whether you are in the market for a new boat or are considering a refit project.

Gyro stabilization In the decade since it introduced its first unit in March 2008, the Seakeeper name has become synonymous with gyro stabilization. With this system, a horizontal flywheel spins in a vacuumenclosed sphere at speeds up to 9,700 rpm or 557 mph. The gyro tilts fore and aft when the boat rolls, producing a powerful gyroscopic torque to port and starboard that counteracts the rolling motion. According to Seakeeper’s Kelsey Albina, this technology can be installed virtually anywhere amidships-aft on boats 27 feet and up, and it has no protruding appendages that affect the boat’s external structure. “The smallest unit can fit easily in the leaning post on a center console, or it can be attached to the hull,” Albina explains, also noting that it does not have to be on the centerline. The unit can take as little as 25 to 30 minutes to spool up, depending on the model — enough time to load the boat, disconnect from shore power, and ready the lines for departure — and then you can unlock the gyro. From that point, Seakeeper’s smart technology takes over, allowing it to read and react to sea conditions instantaneously. This is true at all speeds, in all sea conditions, and even at anchor. “We don’t want to just reduce boat roll, we aim to eliminate it altogether,” Albina says. “By eliminating up to 95 percent of boat roll, we’re providing a near land-like experience. People didn’t think we could hit those numbers, and now customer demand has reached a point where builders are specifically designing hulls to accommodate Seakeeper as a standard feature or an available option. It’s been exciting to see that change in mindset.”

In fact, a full quarter of Seakeeper’s business now involves refits. Interested boaters simply need to determine which unit(s) will work best with their boats. A larger recreational yacht or commercial vessel, for example, may need to incorporate multiple units, and a smaller boat may need a larger unit than anticipated based on the vessel’s weight. Fortunately, because the units can go almost anywhere, most boats can accommodate them. Albina acknowledges that some boaters are concerned about additional weight, but she advises that the company hasn’t found any considerable post-installation differences in speed or fuel efficiency. “When you think about it, a Sea Ray 590 is roughly 70,000 pounds,” Albina says. “The Seakeeper 9’s weight amounts to less than 2 percent of that, so it’s very doable. It’s such a small percentage of a boat’s overall weight.” Boaters also will be interested to note that electrical requirements for a Seakeeper system are minimal. The smallest two units run on 12V DC battery power, while the larger ones will require a generator. Admittedly, due to both weight and cost, these units aren’t a viable possibility for boats under 27 feet. At least, not yet. “We’ve set a lofty goal,” Albina says. “We’re working on developing the technology we need to deliver lighter units at a lower price point. Our vision is to stabilize every boat 20 feet and above.” Fin stabilization This type of gyro isn’t the only way to achieve stability on the water, however. Side-Power’s innovative Vector Fin system uses fins, actuators and a hydraulic system to provide an alternative for larger vessels. The system’s computer incorporates a gyroscope, accelerometer and inclinometer to interpret how quickly the boat is rolling and rocking, and it sends electrical signals to the two opposing hydraulic cylinders for each fin. There is a valve block between the pump and the fin’s actuator; the valve directs fluid to the fin as needed, and the fin will move up to 38 degrees left or right. It’s a seamless, silent process. “When the cylinders move, the fin moves,” says Prentice Weathers at Imtra Corp., Side-Power’s North American distributor. Weathers notes that the foam-filled, curved, fiberglass fins serve as underwater “airplane wings” in terms of hydrodynamics. “The water moving over an angled fin forces the boat to do what it doesn’t naturally want to do,” he explains. “The faster you go, the water pressure over the fins creates power and lift, and the boat goes back to an even keel. It’s pretty cool.” Thanks to their curved shape, Side-Power’s Vector Fins are 30
to 50 percent more efficient than straight fins. They generate up to 50 percent more vertical force, wasting less force side-to-side. Like the Seakeeper, this system also can be used at anchor. Since the pump is attached to an AC electrical motor, it can run off the genny. You can also take advantage of free power by attaching the pump to the boat’s inboard engines while running. Most of Imtra’s Side-Power installations are aboard new boats; just 15 percent are refits. Due to the size of the required equipment, including a generator that can handle the electric motor, the Vector Fin system is best suited to vessels from 55 to 130 feet. Interceptors For boats between 20 and 60 feet, there is another stabilization solution. It has taken off like wildfire in recent years, particularly among vessels 35 feet and up. Welcome to interceptor technology. Mounted on the transom, interceptors are similar to trim tabs. Instead of focusing solely on pitch control, however, they also provide fully automatic roll control through their accelerometer, gyro sensor and GPS antenna. “Not only do you have comfort and stability with automatic roll control, you also get better fuel economy,” says Jamie Simmons, Imtra’s product manager for the Zipwake Dynamic Trim Control System. “You’ll experience less drag than with traditional trim tabs, and Zipwake’s interceptors are more efficient in terms of how they generate lift.”
This simple, relatively low- cost system is what Simmons calls “plug ‘n play.” The interceptors are mounted on a flat transom surface. They plug into a distribution block on the transom bulkhead, and that unit connects to the helm. “Each installation can vary quite a bit because every boat and configuration is different,” Simmons says. “With inboard boats and jetboats, we can easily mount on the transom; outboard and sterndrive boats have more limited space. We always say our cost range is $2,000 to $10,000 because a boat might need some glasswork to create a suitable transom surface for mounting.” Although the Zipwake system does have its limitations (top speed is 60 knots, and the boat must be in motion for the system to function), it’s increasing in popularity. Last year, the company handled more aftermarket than OEM installations. Whether they specialize in gyro stabilization, fin systems or interceptors, these companies are all dedicated to bringing on-water stability to more boaters than ever. “We want people to say, ‘I remember when boats used to roll,’ similar to the way we remember cars without air conditioning,” says Seakeeper’s Albina. “We want to reach the point where our technology becomes something you don’t even think about anymore.” ★

Fuel Overflow unlight shone on the water lapping against the dock, revealing iridescent blues, reds and gold. Quickly, the wind changed direction and a new shape appeared with another color palette. These could be the opening lines from a romance novel. Unfortunately, it’s also the telltale sign of a petroleum spill — not so romantic. Petroleum products not only leave a film or sludge behind, they also may be potential long-term biohazards for both humans and wildlife. The Federal Clean Water Act of 1972 prohibits discharging petroleum products into navigable U.S. waters, including the Great Lakes. Fortunately, most spills can be prevented. Using care while fueling a trailered boat or while at the dock minimizes an environmental hazard and the possibility of a hefty fine.

Safety first Jim Sproul, service coordinator for Radio Island Marina, a Clean Marina in Beaufort, North Carolina, says: “Distractions usually end up with consequences. The worst distractions are being in a hurry and using a cell phone while filling up” Sproul also says to watch for others filling their boats; if you see a problem, speak up. Common sense and attention are sometimes lacking. Careless actions create avoidable tragedies, like fueling up while the motor is running, mistaking a rod holder for the fuel fill opening, or leaving a fuel pump with the gas hose still attached to a trailered boat. It only takes one spark to cause an explosion. Basic fuel reminders Stay away from ignition sources and don’t smoke while fueling. Never mix gasoline with other fuels or siphon gasoline by mouth. Prolonged exposure to gasoline or its fumes can be dangerous. Check for escaping vapors before moving the boat or trailer. Use label-approved gas cans. Don’t fill can to the top, but do wipe off drips and secure the lid. Allow drips to evaporate before placing the container in a car or boat, and store it upright in a well-ventilated area. Never pour gasoline on the ground, in a sewer, drain, or body of water.

Safe fuel dispensing tips Carefully remove the fuel hose and consider using a transfer funnel or flexible spout in the gas fill opening to direct the fuel into the tank. Never leave the fuel hose unattended while fueling. Ground the fuel nozzle against the filler pipe to stop static ignition buildup and minimize spills by adding gasoline slowly at the beginning and end of fueling. Bill Newbern, owner of Radio Island Marina, adds: “You can’t trust a fuel gauge — it lies. Instead, listen for the sound generated as the tank fills and stop it from overflowing.” Know how much your tank holds and then fill it to 90 percent capacity, allowing expanding gases to escape as the fuel heats up. Spill prevention Use a fuel bib around the boat’s fuel fill to catch drips and overflow from the nozzle. Have gasoline-absorbent pads available. Wipe off your hands with an alcohol wipe or a gasoline-absorbing towel and dispose of it properly. Install a fuel/air separator so that air — not fuel — escapes from the vent opening. Add a bilge filter to remove fuel from bilge water, and change the filter as directed by the manufacturer. Opt for a new engine with better fuel efficiency, requiring less filling and reducing the risk of accidental spills. After a spill Notify the marina, station attendee and/or the Coast Guard if a spill occurs. Wipe up fuel using gasoline-absorbent pads. Gasoline can stain the hull, damage gelcoat, strip paint, and ruin fabric surfaces while acting as a solvent. Carry spill booms to contain spills around a boat. Some materials may be squeezed out over a designated waste container and reused. A one-time-use boom contains materials that form a solid with petroleum contact — these must be disposed of properly. Federal law prohibits using soaps to clean up a spill — this may create additional pollution and a fine. Sometimes spills cannot be avoided, but the effects can be minimized with adequate preparation and using common sense. If you identify a large gasoline spill, notify the Coast Guard and the National Response Center (800-424-8802), or the Great Lakes EPA regional office (312-353-2000). ★

All Hands on Deck Is it time to give your kids more duties on the boat?

t may seem like just yesterday your kids were learning to walk and get their “sea legs” on the boat for the first time, but they are growing up fast and may be ready to become a more active crewmember. From daily chores, like cleaning and tidying up, to bigger duties, like docking or driving the boat, there’s ample opportunity for kids to get more involved and take on added responsibilities. Kids like to feel included and take on little jobs; it empowers them and gives them a sense of accomplishment. For parents, anytime you can make tasks or chores a learning opportunity, there’s an equal sense of accomplishment. Even if your kids are younger, there are still plenty of ways they can help out around the boat and start learning about the many responsibilities that come with boat ownership.
Choosing age appropriate duties When delegating new duties on or around the boat, you obviously need to consider what your child is ready and able to tackle. As always, boat safety comes first; you’ll want to be sure any jobs involving your child are supervised until they are old enough or capable enough to handle it independently. This will ensure both your child’s safety and that proper care is given to the boat. That being said, younger kids can start assisting with smaller things on the boat. As they get older, there are many tasks where kids can actually be a helpful addition to your crew. Here are a few ideas to get your kids involved on the boat, progressing from simpler tasks for younger kids to more skilled responsibilities for older children. Cleaning: The task of cleaning a boat never seems to
end, so “start ‘em young.” You can hand your little ones a damp cloth to help wipe down the vinyl in the cockpit, while older kids may be able to help wash the boat’s exterior. Tidying up: From stocking provisions in the cabin to pulling the dock cart to and from the boat, kids can help with many daily chores. Tidying up is needed while carrying gear onto a boat, stowing gear before or after a cruise, and packing up to go home. Assigning ongoing responsibilities will give kids a sense of ownership with daily chores or duties. Assisting: Every captain needs a good first mate — or a first mate in training. Assistance jobs can be tasks like fetching gear for the captain, prepping or preparing meals on-board, being a watersports spotter or even being a helpful hand during maintenance work. Handling lines: The handling of boat lines may start with learning to tie up loose lines in the cockpit and progress to bigger tasks like helping to dock and tie off the boat. Navigating: The companion seat next to the helm is a great spot to learn the rules of the water while assisting with navigation. Your little one could be the look-out for buoys or channel markers and help keep an eye on charts. Get them even more involved by helping to decide on an itinerary or chart a course ahead of a trip. Driving: With proper supervision and boater education courses, older kids can start driving a boat (or at least co-captaining). Be sure to check with the specific rules in your state as the age restrictions to drive a boat or personal watercraft unsupervised can vary. Teachable boating moments Going to the boat is about more than just having a fun day out on the water — it’s learning about what it takes to own, care for and operate a boat. These moments on-board will create a lifetime of knowledge. An early sense of responsibility or duty will only increase the connection your child has with boating. Usually a hands-on activity showing a proper technique (or showing how things can go wrong) is where kids learn best. This season, our 10-year-old is eager to help with the lines while docking — a task we’ll likely do together for the next few years until we are satisfied she can handle it safely. Meanwhile, our 6-year-old is mommy’s little helper stocking the refrigerator with water bottles and enjoys being daddy’s cruising buddy at the helm. Talk to your kids about what new responsibilities they want to take on this boating season. Their eagerness to learn coupled with their enthusiasm for boating might make it the perfect time for them to lend a hand. ★

Beneteau Gran Turismo 50 Love at first sight.
I
f anyone should believe in love at first sight, it’s boaters. After all, whom among us hasn’t felt our heart soar upon spotting the yacht of our dreams? It’s also how Great Lakes boaters tend to respond when they get their first look at the all-new Beneteau Gran Turismo 50 (GT 50). inker’s Q7 is a surprisingly deep boat in spite of its sporty profile and gracefully flowing sheerline. That’s especially evident when you sit in the bow, where the generous freeboard provides a real sense of security and plenty of protection from wind and spray. The company aptly calls it a “hot tub-style” bow. Full wraparound loungers and conveniently-placed recessed stainless steel grabrails allow forward- or aft-facing seating here, with occupants positioned out of the driver’s view. “The 20 degree deadrise hull and the deep hot tub-style seating gives the Q7 a safe and comfortable ride for children and adults alike,” says Stephen Wheatley, marketing manager for Rinker Boats. he brand-new Monterey M225 — with its sleek Arctic white hull and heady blue, gray and black graphics — painted a welcoming and energetic image as it waited for me on Lake Dora, an equally colorful body of water in the middle of the Sunshine state. A fresh addition to the Monterey fleet — which consists of 26 models from 20 to 40 feet — the M225 will appeal to new boaters looking for their first boat, according to the company’s marketing manager, Rene Moore. After spending a few hours aboard, I agree that it’s what you would expect from a boatbuilder with more than 30 years of experience and numerous National Marine Manufacturer Association awards for customer satisfaction. My eyes are trained to focus on details, and this boat abounds in attentive features that are perfectly equipped for family outings. Our test boat was outfitted with a wide swim platform padded with optional SeaDek planking, making boarding safe and secure through the cockpit opening. The molded diamond pattern non-slip on the fiberglass sole is grippy yet friendly to your bare feet and is easy to keep clean. A woven carpet insert is available; however, this boat is all about wash-and-wear maintenance, which is ideal for both the novice and savvy boat owners who prefer to spend their time on the water having fun. The dual console layout compartmentalizes the interior, making excellent use of the boat’s 8-foot, 6-inch beam to sprawl out and enjoy the acreage. Bow seating includes port and starboard lounges, and an optional insert fills the centerline when more relaxing space is needed. Drink holders, grab handles and stereo speakers are scattered about in all the right places. Monterey manufactures its own upholstery, and the detail and quality are obvious when you sit on — or lean back into — the cushions. There’s plenty of support and comfort that are immediately apparent when running over lake chop. The texture of the material allows it to breathe so it’s not sticky against your skin. Lift the cushions to find generous dry stowage compartments below, which are gelcoated and then lined with removable Dri-Dek vinyl tiles that are cut to fit. The same is true for the bow anchor locker. The fact that Monterey fusses about items like these is an

indication of how much the people who build it care about the product they produce. Optional monogrammed, pop-up 6-inch stainless steel cleats further follows the company’s commitment to details with style.
FEATURES ON DECK
The wraparound Taylor windshield frame has a satin finish and is raked to follow the sheer, complementing the boat’s profile. A swiveling bucket seat helm chair is outfitted with a flip-up bolster that gives the operator a choice of accommodations; I especially liked that my visibility was ideal in either position. At cruise, the windshield provided plenty of protection and also arrested wind noise, making the cockpit quiet and comfortable. Docking was effortless while standing at the leather-trimmed and tilt steering wheel. A raised, upholstered pod houses a bank of Medallion instruments; the chrome-trimmed black bezels nested in the gray gelcoat dash were easy to read and free of glare. Accessory switches are well marked on both sides of the wheel, and a breaker panel under the helm is readily accessible. A handy, two-part fiberglass bin is beneath the single-lever Yamaha remote control, and an upholstered armrest collects loose gear, like sunglasses, binoculars, sunscreen and other sundries. Opposite the starboard side helm, the lounge with an aft-facing backrest is more than 7 feet long and 25 inches wide. In lieu of this lounge, you can specify another bucket seat; however, our test boat layout is definitely the way

you will want to go because it also provides a humongous stowage compartment below for wakeboards, waterskis and other bulky gear. Another lounge spans the transom and includes a 48-quart Igloo cooler accessed by raising the cushion on a gas strut. The backrest of the transom lounge lifts to access the gelcoated bilge home for the automatic Rule bilge pump, fuel filter and battery. Our test boat also had a depth sounder with a shallow water alarm, and the transducer was internally mounted here, eliminating any chance of damage when launching or trailering. More stowage is available beneath a centerline hatch between the helm and port lounge revealing a gelcoated compartment more than 8 feet long. A closer look at the deck hatches aboard the M225 showcases Monterey’s engineering and design prowess with deep gutters to drain water, effectively keeping below-decks dry.
WATER POWER
Our test boat was powered with a single F-200 Yamaha — an in-line EFI four-cylinder outboard perfectly suited for the task. The 2.8-litre motor weighs in at 487 pounds and has a 50-amp alternator for electronics and other electrical accessories. With three people aboard, the M225 ripped to a top speed of 47 mph at 5,990 rpm. The outboard is quiet, and the Sea Star hydraulic steering is smooth and tight. Lake Dora was a millpond on testing day, but putting the boat through a number of maneuvers delivered precise control and modest running angles. Tearing about the lake
while turning the wheel hard-over port to starboard and back again at various throttle settings revealed stability and security thanks to the M225’s 19-degree transom deadrise and wide beam. Whatever chop I could create was simply ignored by the hull with this running surface, and I would expect a similar response in snotty conditions. The average depth of the cockpit is 33 inches so you are well protected. The abundance of urethane-wrapped stainless steel grabrails is a plus for adults and children. Lightly loaded planing time is as expected, around four seconds. With a cruise speed of almost 30 mph you can expect a range of just under 170 miles while obtaining 3.6 mpg, based on Monterey’s engineering sea trials. The boat carries 52 gallons of fuel, so there is plenty of gas aboard for long days of fun on the water. This new bowrider definitely shows off the quality known throughout the Monterey gene pool and features the company’s transferrable lifetime limited hull and deck warranty, which adds even more value. The M225 comes with an abundance of standard features, allowing you to get out on the water. Additional optional features include a Bimini top, mooring cover or a removable ski pylon. The fit and finish is top-notch throughout the boat, from the polished stainless steel rubrail and through-hull fittings, to cockpit lights, LED navigation lights and a four-step stainless steel boarding ladder. The simplicity and accessibility of the various boat systems is also a nice touch. The M225 is a prime choice for a young family with water kids, as well as an experienced owner wanting a boat that does it all without a lot of fuss or maintenance. ★ LAKELANDBOATING.COM

THE BRAND-NEW Tiara Sport 38 LS (Luxury Sport) represents a break from tradition for the well-established boatbuilder. After creating high-quality products for nearly 40 years, Tiara could easily maintain its position at the top of the boating industry ladder by simply adhering to the levels of excellence the company was founded upon. Instead, they went back to the drawing board.
The Tiara Sport 38 LS is a completely new design intended to take advantage of the growing dayboat market. The boat was built for customers who want more focus on outside features and performance but still want the option to comfortably spend a weekend on-board. Somewhat of a crossover, the 38 LS fills the gap between the company’s luxury cruiser and sportfishing lines.

The boat was designed with a focus on luxury, but the outboard configuration provides performance that traditional diesel engines would never achieve. Triple 350-hp (optional 300-hp) Yamahas provide enough power to pull skiers or tubers; however, they are so smooth and quiet that you hardly notice them hanging off the transom. Several different paint options are available to make the engines blend in even more. The Tiara 38 LS has beautiful lines and combines bowrider, center console and cruiser features into one package with a balanced appearance. The huge wraparound Taylor windshield offsets the straight edges of the gunnels and slightly raked hardtop nicely, with optional hull colors and custom vinyl accents available to make the boat stand out from the crowd.
Settle in The floorplan of the self-draining cockpit has plenty of room for guests to comfortably drift around the space. A galley area behind the helm seat with a Corian countertop provides a huge serving station for food and drinks, with stowable covers hiding a stainless sink and trash bin. Below the counter is storage, a dual voltage fridge and an optional grill. Dual companion seats face aft from either side of the galley with storage beneath each one. The U-lounge might just be the best feature on the entire boat. Sitting aft of the hardtop, it’s perfect for sun worshipers, although a retractable sunshade is optional for days when a little cover is necessary. The U-lounge is large enough to seat six comfortably, with a folding, rotating teak table that can serve everyone seated — with room to spare. The table also drops down to convert the space into a roomy sunpad. The U-lounge on the 38 LS hides a secret. Lift the inconspicuous handle on the port side and the whole lounge spins to lock in place facing aft — a task that can be performed with two fingers. Sitting in the aft-facing lounge provides a beautiful view of the water or beach, and the lounge is perched high enough that the outboards are still well below your line of sight. It’s a unique feature that really adds to the fun, sporty feel of the boat. Port and starboard walkways lead to swim platform extensions on each side of the engines. Although they are small enough to flank the outboards the extensions provide enough surface area to hold a swim ladder and allow easy access to the water. They are also big enough to use comfortably for entering and exiting the boat from the dock. The bow seating area, which has an optional Mediterranean sunshade, is accessed via a starboard walkway; this provides more room forward for passengers and creates three steps of differing heights along the port side. Along with the option to enter from the swim platform, this design makes for easy access from floating or stationary docks of any height.
Get comfy There is no shortage of comfort or control at the helm. Three individual seats with flip-up bolsters, flip-down footrests and folding armrests cradle the captain and crew in the lap of luxury, and can also house optional cockpit air conditioning and heat. A fold-away riser drops down from below the steering wheel for people who want a few extra inches to get a clear view over the dash. Corian surfaces and teak accents offset each other at the dash, where extras were added for the digital age, including a groove for cell phones and USB charging ports in a covered glovebox. A Garmin touchscreen is included for navigation and feedback, with an optional second unit available. Overhead, skylights add to the bright, open feel at the controls. Yamaha’s own engine readout is mounted above the windshield where it is easy to read and reach. The autopilot is also tucked up and out of the way just below the center opening hatch. Yamaha’s

Helm Master joystick system, paired with a standard bowthruster, is an available option to help with docking and maneuvering in tight quarters. Entry through the full-height sliding cabin door leads down a couple of steps past a hidden microwave and fridge to a cozy but comfortable athwartship full berth. The dayboat design is most obvious in the cabin, which provides room to change, get kids out of the sun, or overnight in a destination port. The boat was not designed for long trips with another couple — it was built to play on the water. The stateroom is only intended for two but is well lit and comfortable. The head is also cozy, and an opening porthole over the sink, hand-held shower wand and hidden storage are all nice touches.
...and hold on tight! The 38 LS performs and handles more like a ski boat than an overnighter with room to seat 15 passengers. With the triple 350s, the 38-footer will cruise at 35 mph, and tops out at just over 55 mph. It’s fast and nimble, but it’s also comfortable and stable. Conversation is possible while sitting at the U-lounge without screaming over engine noise or wind — even at cruising speeds.
With features such as pop-up cleats, screened openings, a diesel generator, air conditioning and entertainment packages, the Tiara 38 LS is ready to go before options are added. The boat even includes programmable LEDs mounted throughout, which will react to music or will copy any color you can choose from your smartphone. However, the list of upgrades is comprehensive, including Lenco Auto Glide Trim Tabs and a Seakeeper 3 gyro stabilizer, The fun doesn’t have to stop when you reach the dock. Tie up, then turn up the Fusion/JL Audio zoned stereo, set the LEDs to match the music, and grab a cold drink from the galley while burgers are cooking on the grill. The Tiara 38 LS is a versatile, sporty performer with a softer side that will get you to the party cove or fishing spot in a hurry. Tiara has always been an innovative company and one willing to embrace new technology and materials before other manufacturers. Welcome to today’s world of marine audio.
“d
on’t waste your money on a new set of speakers.” If that sentence triggered the next line, “you get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers,” welcome to the Billy Joel Fan Club. The artist wrote that song in the late 70s reflecting on changes in the music industry and one of life’s many introspective moments. Marine audio is undergoing a technological metamorphosis, combining speakers, amplification systems and lighting to turn a mood into an experience. Three of the biggest names in marine audio, FUSION, Wet Sounds and Klipsch Audio are setting new benchmarks for marine entertainment. Tow boats are at the forefront of this fidelity marathon, and for the moment MasterCraft is the Maestro delivering concert-level sound thanks to a partnership with BMW Design Works, Klipsch Audio and Bongiovi Acoustics Digital Power Station (DPS) technology. DPS can take any standard consumer-focused audio product and optimize the performance of its existing components. The DPS algorithm replaces missing harmonics, while adding depth, clarity, definition, dimension and power. MasterCraft didn’t want just any standard audio products. It approached Klipsch to custom-engineer its first marine audio systems for a stunning black and gold 50th Anniversary X-Star for the Tennessee-based builder’s Golden Anniversary this summer. Dave Ekern, MasterCraft’s director of engineering, says one of the biggest challenges is speaker placement given today’s three owner-favorite modes: Drive, tow and chill. “When you tow a skier, they are 60 to 75 feet behind the boat, while a wakesurfer is within arm’s reach,” Ekern says. “Speaker placement was Klipsch speaker details revised to improve sound distribution, and new Klipsch Audio speaker sizes were developed to fit in neoteric areas on the boat.”

Klipsch engineers designed a suite of new billet aluminum speaker cans that have a premium aesthetic while alleviating potential sound issues. Instead of a one-size-fits-all solution, the Klipsch-Bongiovi DPS system is custom to each boat and automatically adjusts in real time to your playlist. As the lead judge for the marine industries Innovation Awards, I try a lot of new products. Several leading boatbuilders are turning to custom engineering for speaker placement, upgrading amplifiers and taking into consideration the noise defiant effects of speed, wind and engine noise while underway. About the time Steve Jobs introduced the iPod (and a few years later the iPhone), FUSION set the standard for integrating Bluetooth with your boat stereo. No more burning CDs with your favorite playlists; you simply brought the device on-board, and with each passing year the features and controls became more tightly integrated. “The transition from MP3 players to music on phones happened very quickly,” notes Chris Baird, managing director of FUSION. This made FUSION look at enabling internal “waterproof/charging” docks for smartphones, and we were first to market with this solution. As battery life improved, internal docks were no longer required. Over a five-year span came the explosion of streaming music — Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music, etc. — and once again FUSION has called on engineers to improve the delivery system. “Connectivity on boats is becoming critical for the future customer,” Baird says. “The expectation is if they can do something at home, they should be able to do it on their boat. Many home entertainment products that are being installed on boats today are useless without an internet connection, making it essential for companies to design with the ‘non-connected’ boat in mind as much as they do for the connected vessel.” This summer, FUSION is setting a new standard with built-in Wi-Fi streaming. Wi-Fi has a faster data transfer rate compared with Bluetooth and delivers higher quality audio. Coupled with FUSION’s proprietary Digital Signal Processing (DSP), speakers in each audio zone are optimized through engineer-designed calculations. From the kick drum to your eardrum, FUSION DSP reproduces the music as if you were in the studio with the band. Branded Apollo Marine Entertainment System and Apollo Marine Zone Stereo intuitive touch-screen controls allow you to do the familiar swipe through your playlist to find your favorite song. Over-the-air software updates promise the Apollo series will always be up to date, just like software upgrades to your smartphone. One of the most sophisticated features is FUSION-PartyBus. Each additional PartyBusenabled stereo gives the user the option of playing the same perfectly-synced audio source through the entire vessel or switch to personal mode and listen to your choice of music without disrupting Party Mode in other areas of the boat. Higher-quality stereos, speakers, amps and entertainment on-board has become more essential to any day on the water. Yes, you can still find a cheap pair of speakers, but why? O
ur third Great Loop. Another memorable cruise down the American heartland’s central rivers. Each time my husband, Jerry, and I have traversed the more than 1,300 miles of middle-U.S. rivers and canals, we have discovered more wonderful anchorages, interesting villages and friendly people afloat and ashore. Aboard Monarch, our 52-foot Halvorsen raised pilothouse trawler, we began our river trip on a sunny October morning, departing the Columbia Yacht Club in the heart of downtown Chicago. Adjacent Monroe Harbor’s huge mooring field, the five harbors run by the City of Chicago and several private marinas (including

Departing Chicago, cruisers have the choice of going through downtown (if your boat can get under the lowest fixed bridge height of 17 feet) or through the more industrial waterway 11 miles southeast of Chicago at Calumet Harbor and River. By lowering Monarch’s radar mast, we could clear the downtown route. The proximity of the Chicago River to the business district placed us right under the impressive skyscrapers of Chicago’s breathtaking skyline. Following the Des Plaines River, on each of our three Great Loops we docked overnight at the free Bicentennial Park in Joliet, Illinois. During the summer, you can take in free concerts at this park; check at the Visitors Center for the schedule and information on the Joliet Area History Museum and the Rialto Theater. Along this section of the Illinois Waterway, we also recommend Harborside Marina, where we enjoyed a ride on the courtesy “short bus” and a tasty meal at the Big Fish Restaurant. An alternative overnight tie-up can be found at the free town dock in Ottawa, Illinois; a nice commercial marina is also available here at Heritage Harbor. Further downstream, we spotted a bald eagle struggling with a large fish along the shoreline near Starved Rock State Park, a spectacular park featuring waterfalls, bluffs and 18 canyons. When anchoring near here, try Lower Henry Island, where we dropped the hook in 16 feet of water, well out of the river traffic.

Onward to The Mississippi
In Peoria Lake, Illinois Valley Yacht Club, just north of Peoria, is a recommended stop for many river cruisers. Watch the entrance, which had shallowed to just four feet when we passed on our way to our favorite stop, the downtown Peoria City Dock. About halfway between Chicago and St. Louis, this is a good place for a crew change, with the airport just a short drive from the marinas or the City Dock. The Spirit of Peoria paddle wheeler added to the riverfront ambiance, docking right behind us after giving fall color tours along the riverbanks. While we missed Peoria’s Annual Rib Fest Cookoff, held in early October, we didn’t go hungry; an excellent steak and salmon dinner awaited us at Two25, the restaurant in the Mark Twain Hotel, just a few blocks from the dock. We visited the Peoria Art Fair and Saturday Farmer’s Market along the river and toured the adjacent Caterpillar Museum. On the river trip, we enjoy alternating docking with overnight anchorages; among the latter, we like Bath Chute, behind the south part of Grand Island, a remote area just off the main channel of the river. On one of our loops we tied up at Beardstown, Illinois, alongside the Logsdon Tug Service depot barges. This industrial, working setting is bordered by a towering cement-walled levee, with the town only visible after climbing up a tall metal staircase. Beardstown’s claim to fame is the Lincoln Courtroom and Lincoln Museum, in the 1844 City Hall building. The courtroom is the only one still in use where Abraham Lincoln practiced law.

That evening, we enjoyed dinner at Annie Sazarac’s Bar, a small aluminum shed near the river. Here, we savored succulent ribs — cooked outdoors on a row of Weber grills — as we sat at a riverside picnic table underneath the stars. The river system provides considerable diversity along its banks. Some areas are scenic; others are industrial, residential or agricultural. Near the latter, you’ll see grain elevators loading barges, with great clouds of dust in the air, and workers sweeping spilled soybeans into the Illinois River. On two of our trips, we anchored in nine feet at Bar Island, and the other time at the south tip of Mortland Island, in 10 feet of water with plenty of swing room and well out of the channel.
The Mississippi River to Alton Coming up on the left descending bank of the river is Grafton officially at mile 0.0 of the Illinois Waterway, at the junction of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. Here, the modern Grafton Marina features 186 slips behind a floating concrete breakwater, with an on-site restaurant, fuel and repair
services. Or boaters can tie up at the Loading Dock Restaurant, which has live music on weekends. Grafton’s main street houses a few gift and antique shops, a grocery store, bank, museum, restaurants and bars. The scenery changes dramatically once you enter the Mississippi River, with lowlands replaced by high palisades on the left descending bank, resplendent in fall colors. The Great Rivers National Scenic Byway winds alongside the river, with beautiful views of the etched river bluffs. Here, the state of Missouri is on the right descending bank and Illinois on the left. This area is within 30 miles of St. Louis, and mansions along the palisades command a panoramic view of the river and its heavy boat traffic. About 18 miles after entering the Mississippi River, Alton, Illinois appears on the left descending bank. Our favorite stop here is expansive and modern Alton Marina, constructed entirely on floating docks, including the harbor office, shower and restroom facilities, swimming pool and hot tub. Navigation and Locking Tips On our three Great Loops, the voyage from Chicago, Illinois, to Mobile, Alabama, has varied from 23 to 39 days. The preferred central river route for cruisers is north to south, to gain help from the sometimes-considerable currents. The recreational route includes only 218 miles on the busy Mississippi River, which offers very few marinas and fuel stops for cruising boats; after you leave the Mississippi River, the less congested cruising route travels parallel to and east of the Mississippi. Whether you are upbound or downbound, the river’s sides are consistently termed “right descending” or “left descending” bank, as though you are downbound on the river. This is because the river often twists and turns like a snake, and compass points aren’t as descriptive or exact as noting each side of the river.
the Corps of Engineers website for current lock information, as locks give commercial vessels preference in transiting. Locks are also occasionally closed for repairs, and you are better off waiting at your dock or anchorage, than idling in the busy and sometimes turbulent river. Double bollard
In the river system, locks are rigged with floating bollards, often double heights, for easy access from any deck level. Just secure spring lines on midship cleats for a smooth ride down.

array goes up and down with the river’s widely variable level. Alton features a nice assortment of restaurants, shops, lovely pocket parks and historical trails. Don’t miss the walking tour of Alton’s Lincoln and Civil War Legacy Trail, including the site of the famous
Lincoln-Douglas Senatorial campaign debates of 1858. While Lincoln lost the Senate race, this debate elevated him into a prime position for his 1860 Presidential victory. This charming town provided a warm welcome to our next leg of our rivers journey — the Mighty Mississippi. ★
Always tend all lines during transit and make sure they don’t become entangled. Always defer to commercial towboats pushing barges — we’ve seen barge arrays of as many as 42. Encounters with these should always be discussed with the tow on the VHF radio; the captain of the tow will usually direct you to pass on one side or the other, or in some cases, to stand off as the tow navigates a particularly narrow bend. Remember, tonnage rules! Note that some tugs are built for the low bridges in the upper Illinois River and feature a hydraulic pilothouse, which rises for normal piloting and lowers to pass under bridges.

New York Times would include Buffalo, New York on its 2018 list of “100 Places to Visit in the World�? But there it is, testament to the fact that Buffalo is buzzing and making a big comeback from its Rust Belt image. The waterfront leads the way after a decade-long redevelopment, with new hotels, restaurants, patios, parks and bike trails dotting the shoreline and attracting boaters of all stripes.

Start your visit to Buffalo at Canalside, where the Buffalo River and City Ship Canal converge at Buffalo’s Inner Harbor. Here, the city is repurposing historic buildings for entertainment, dining and recreation, turning its long-dormant grain elevators into tourist-worthy attractions. Visitors can take a vertical tour up the silos or rent kayaks or SUPs to paddle through “Elevator Alley.” Canalside features hundreds of events scheduled throughout the year. Premier among these is the Buffalo Ribfest held in late July, which combines country music with everything smoked — from hearty barbecue ribs to pulled pork; vegetarians be warned! Regular events include Saturday Artisan Markets, participative fitness activities, and Sunset Sundays with live acoustic music, story time, author presentations, meditation and life coaching. Make sure to check out the summertime Thursday live concert series featuring performers like Platinumselling songwriter Eric Paslay, popular Canadian band The Tea Party, and Ghostface Killah and Slick Rick.

Up next, on the peninsula separating Buffalo’s Ship Canal from the Buffalo River is RiverWorks, the city’s newest waterfront boating, sports, arts, music and entertainment hotspot. Catch a concert, roller derby bout or martial arts match here. In winter, two outdoor ice rinks feature figure skating, hockey matches and, in a nod to neighboring Ontario, curling leagues. RiverWorks also serves as transportation central with History River Cruises, Double Decker Bus Tours, Buffalo Pedal Tours and the Grand Lady Dinner Cruise all departing from here. RiverWorks is the centerpiece of Buffalo’s ubiquitous beer culture, featuring 110-foot-high grain silos painted like a six pack of Labatt Blue. These “cans” not only offer a unique 360-degree view of the Buffalo skyline and Lake Erie, but sport a brand-new silo-to-silo zip line course. Get your suds on at RiverWorks Brewery, the first in the world opened in a converted grain silo. Direct tank-to-tap lines supply four bars on site, including the Silo Bar inside the Labatt Six Pack silo. In a nod to the city’s history as a grain port, foamy treats include Conveyor Cream Ale, Wheeler Wheat and Bin House Ale. You can even work up a thirst at the new climbing facility in the Wheeler grain silo. Explore the shore Gateway Park
Mariners consider Tonawanda the official western end of the Erie Canal — even though New York’s Governor signed a bill about 10 years ago transferring that distinction to Buffalo. Despite this pronouncement, Tonawanda remains the spot where many Looper sailors unstep their masts for transit of the Erie Canal — or step their masts if headed west to Lake Erie. Just 15 miles by water from Buffalo, this busy little town is actually two towns: North Tonawanda on the north side of the canal, and Tonawanda on the south side. Tonawanda means “swift running water” in the Seneca language. With the Erie Canal taming those waters, boaters will find both sides of the canal have placid dockage, with friendly marina staff ready to catch your lines and share local knowledge. And there’s plenty to see, do and eat on both sides. North Tonawanda is home to the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum, a national historic site and fount of information and appreciation for all things carousel. Built in 1872, the building housed a huge wood shop where as many as 75 carvers fashioned horses, roosters, dragons and other carousel creatures; another crew was charged with painting them in vivid rainbow colors. The museum is open April through December; two vintage carousels are available for both kids and adults to ride. North Tonawanda’s Farmers Market is about a mile from the waterfront and worth the walk. By summer 2018, expect to see a vibrant face lift to this 100-plus-year-old market. Open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, this is the place to provision your boat with baked goods, cheeses, fresh eggs, locally grown produce, meats and poultry; don’t forget to pick up some local arts and crafts souvenirs. Canal Fest of the Tonawandas will be held July 15–22, 2018 and celebrates the Erie Canal’s history and contribution to the Great Lakes region. Drawing up to 250,000 people and featuring eight days of entertainment, this is where you can hear artists like River Rocks Band, Back to the Bars, Black Widow Band, and, my favorite, Rust Belt Girls. Don’t forget to partake in the pancake breakfast, bike cruise, car cruise, craft and food booths, and kid’s events. Keep up your strength at a couple of great local restaurants. As we docked at North Tonawanda, we opted to dine at Remington Tavern and Seafood, located in a historic building that once housed the Remington typewriter factory. Try Faroe Island stuffed salmon, Swordfish Oscar, Thursday’s yellow pike fish fry or Saturday’s prime rib night. Top it off with a lace cookie cup brimming with fresh fruit and berries or the daily featured house-made gelato. Another great option is the Dockside Bar and Grill, just steps from the city dock. Situated in another historic building once used by the New York Canal Authority to unload barges and store mule feed, the “feed” today includes smoked wings, smoked brisket tacos, crab cake sliders, goat cheese cannelloni and more. Wash it down with a pint of one (or more) of 36 craft beer on draft, specialty cocktails like the Hollywood Kiss, or my favorite, the Frozen Cake Shake, a cake vodka and ice cream smoothie complete with graham cracker crumbs and chocolate drizzle. Get off your boat and stretch your legs with the convenient Reddy Bikeshare, where visitors can rent bikes parked at stations scattered throughout the city. Check out nearby Tonawanda (see sidebar) as you breeze down the new Rails to Trails project, a four-mile path along a former railroad bed that connects the two towns. Or take your bike for a $1 Queen City Bike Ferry ride, which provides access to miles of lakefront trails along Buffalo’s Outer Harbor. If you want to leave the captaining to someone else for a change, The Miss Buffalo II offers daily cruises in season. Or take a Lake Erie sunset excursion on the Spirit of Buffalo schooner on “Wine in the Wind Wednesdays,” which departs from the Erie Basin Marina. Don’t forget to keep your strength up by sampling some of Sponge Candy the local food for which Buffalo is famous. In fact, you’ll find Buffalo has one of the most distinctive food cultures in the U.S., with unique regional specialties you can’t find anywhere else. First among them: The original (and world-famous) Buffalo Wings — copied far and wide but never equaled — which originally hail from Buffalo’s Anchor Bar. This local institution is commemorated every fall at Buffalo’s National Buffalo Wing Festival, where you can join thousands of wing fanatics as they make the annual Labor Day pilgrimage to the birthplace of this saucy, spicy signature dish. Another local favorite is Beef on Weck, a German-inspired roast beef sandwich on a salty kummelweck roll, dipped in au jus, and served with horseradish. Enjoy one at Steve’s Pig and Ox Roast restaurant not too far from the waterfront. Or if you’re like me and are arriving from a year-long cruise and just back in the Great Lakes, you’ll be hungering for Lake Erie yellow perch; this will likely be the first stop where you will be able to order these tasty morsels. For a broader selection of offerings, visit in July and don’t miss the two-day Taste of Buffalo, featuring samples from more than 50 local restaurants, along with live music. Buffalo also purports to be the home of sponge candy, an apparently accidental confection of caramelized spun sugar covered in chocolate, also known as seafoam. For a taste of Buffalo’s multicultural flavor evident throughout the year, try the Greek Fest, the Buffalo Pride Festival and Juneteenth Festival, all held in June; the French and Indian War Encampment and Italian Heritage Festival in July; and the Scottish Festival and Irish Festival, both held in August. Buy local at South Buffalo Farmers Market, where you can provision with fresh, locally grown and produced goods and join in health and wellness activities for the whole family, including free yoga classes. Stop by South Buffalo’s Cazenovia Park on Sunday mornings from June through September. etting in touch with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) is probably not your first course of action when plotting a boat trip; however, the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) division of the DOD runs a quiet, well-appointed marina on the Great Lakes Naval Center base that boaters should consider — especially if they currently or have previously served in the military. The Naval Station (NAVSTA) Great Lakes Marina is located on a Navy base about 40 miles north of Chicago. “We’ve got around 96 acres of open water inside of our breakwater area,” says Harbormaster Doug Derginer. “On those days when you may be limited by the size of the boat you own, you can still hang around and anchor out, or picnic and relax on your boat.” The marina is accessible to all military members from any branch, past and present, and their families. Membership at the NAVSTA Great Lakes Marina isn’t totally exclusive though; civilians may also dock at the marina after undergoing a background check to receive clearance for the base. Derginer says it usually takes about seven days to get clearance.

Derginer describes the marina as quaint, where families and individual boaters can come to relax and enjoy nature. There are 76 slips, 25 moorings and several wall slips. The open water around the marina is ideal for kayaking, canoeing or paddleboarding. The nearby beach is one of the best in the area, Derginer says. Boaters will also find fishing piers, a picnic area, an archery range, and a number of camping, sporting and party equipment available for rent. Boaters can buy fishing and hunting licenses at the ship’s store. In addition to the slew of outdoor amenities, the NAVSTA Great Lakes Marina offers safe powerboating classes and a sailing school. The Beach House can be reserved for family reunions and social outings. The base itself is an attraction with a lot of history behind its walls. “People dig the young sailors,” Derginer says. “Families will come around and talk to them.” Although the marina may not be the quickest option for boaters in search of a last-minute dock, Derginer says those who decide to dock there will find a familyfriendly atmosphere. ★

Sea Legs A classic lapstrake.

Sea Legs is a 13-foot, 6-inch Tonka Craft Mata Hari classic wood outboard of lapstrake construction. She was built in 1957 in Wayzata, Minnesota, along the shores of Lake Minnetonka, which is where the Tonka Craft company got its name. Tonka Craft had a line of three boats all named after notorious women. My boat is the smallest, a Mata Hari. The next in line was a 16-foot Madam X and finally a 19-foot Amazon model. I bought Sea Legs about 10 years ago. After a few years I decided she needed repairs to the hull. I removed the windshield, fittings and seats, and then flipped the boat over. I had a lot of fun stripping off the paint, fixing the strakes and finally reassembling her. It’s been an absolute joy getting involved with my little boat, buying boat books, joining the Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS) and, best of all, going to antique boat shows. I have even started to host a little show here on my own Loon Lake in Illinois. The third show will happen this summer. We will have five boats or so, good food, fun times and a parade around the lake. It makes for a really nice day enjoying the company of other classic boat enthusiasts.
