anuary 1 marks a clean slate and a fresh start — a chance for us to get back on the treadmill, diet or budget. Our New Year's resolution at Lakeland Boating is to find new ways to reach our audience, polish the design of the magazine and brainstorm new, interesting content. We're launching into 2018 with a few changes to the magazine. As you flip through this issue, you’ll notice some design updates, as well as a new column called "Beneath the Surface" (p. 32) written by contributor Heather Steinberger. This new column aims to answer questions posed by boaters; we commence this column by asking: “How does a hurricane impact a charter vacation?” If your New Year's resolution is to be more environmentally conscious, read our feature on microplastics, which offers tips on how you can help reduce microplastic water pollution (p. 50). And if you're still confused about marine insurance, check out our feature "Beat Boat Insurance Anxiety" to see some of your questions answered (p. 52). For those spending January doing research on new boats, we've got you covered; we walked the docks at the 2017 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show back in November and compiled a show recap with noteworthy launches and announcements (p. 20). Take a look and see if anything catches your eye! For those wanting to travel more in 2018, contributor Craig Ritchie takes us along the Trent-Severn Waterway in this month's Port of Call (p. 56). Connecting Lake Ontario to Lake Huron, the Trent-Severn is often referred to as one of the greatest cruising routes in the world. I hope that the coming year brings you peace, health and happiness.
My New Year's resolution for 2017 was to learn more about computers. I've done that. For 2018, my resolution is to learn even more about computers. I'm taking lessons. HHH

Skye & Tucker We have always had our dogs with us while boating, first as sailors and now as power boaters. We have had golden retrievers, a border collie, an Aussie, and now a pointer and a pointer mix, both rescues. Skye and Tucker are great together and great crew on our boat in Michigan. They nap a lot together but Tucker also loves to jump in the lake off the swim platform and can even climb back up the ladder by himself. Michigan Governor Releases Statement on Line Five
Snyder
After reviewing the condition of the 64-yearold Enbridge Line 5, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder released a statement calling the situation “deeply concerning.” He called for a thorough review of the pipeline’s condition after it was revealed the line had gaps of missing enamel coating last year. It was revealed Enbridge knew of the gaps but did not report it for years. The update provided to the governor found 42 of the 48 areas inspected on the pipeline have coating gaps. In his statement, Gov. Snyder strongly urged Enbridge to become more transparent concerning Line 5, saying: “While it does not indicate any imminent danger for the Great Lakes, this causes significant concern for the long term.”

Killarney Mountain Lodge Owner Buys Killarney Bay Inn Killarney Mountain Lodge owner, Holden Rhodes, is adding to his collection of Killarney, Ontario hospitality properties with the purchase of the Killarney Bay Inn. This is Rhodes’ third Killarney purchase in less than three years. The Killarney Bay Inn property spans 80 acres and includes a nine-hole golf course. Rhodes’ other property, the Killarney Mountain Lodge, will soon have a new 34,000-square-foot conference center (pictured), which is scheduled for completion in late 2018. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) was a hit; according to Informa, the show’s producer, the 58th annual FLIBS attracted about 105,000 international buyers, sellers and browsers from more than 50 countries. Informa also says that attendance at this year’s event was up 7 percent from 2016. Thousands of new boats, gear and electronics were displayed at the show. Below are a few of the highlights. • Groupe Beneteau announced 38 new models across its 10 brands. New models include the Four Winns 290 OB; Glastron’s new GTD series; the Scarab 255 Open and the Jeanneau Leader 9.0. The company also announced its new Ship Control system. • Sunseeker made four U.S. debuts, including the 76 Predator, Predator 57 MK II, Manhattan 66 and 95 Yacht. • Galeon Yachts unveiled five new yachts, including: The 460 Fly, 510 Sky, 405 HTS, 430 HTC and 485 HTS. • S2 Yachts, parent company of Pursuit Boats and Tiara Yachts, showed off the new Tiara 38LS and Pursuit Boats Dual Console 365. • Garmin introduced the next-generation ECHOMAP Plus combo series; STRIKER Plus fishfinders; ActiveCaptain mobile app; and Descent Mk1. • Hinckley had the world’s first fully electric luxury yacht, the Dasher, on display. They also previewed renderings of the upcoming 2019 Navetta 48. • Volvo had its most powerful diesel engine ever on display: The D13 1,000-hp engine. • Boston Whaler debuted its new 150 Montauk, 170 Montauk, 350 Realm and updated 380 Outrage. • Chris-Craft debuted a pilothouse version of its Catalina 34, as well as a 38 Launch with new hardtop, a Commander 44 with updated interior and a new Port Red metallic color option. • SureShade was on more than 100 new boats, and touted its new stainless steel MTX manual pull-out shade system, available in 6- and 9-foot extension lengths.

“The Great Lakes at Ten Miles an Hour” Thomas Shevory didn’t realize how much exploring he could do around the Great Lakes until he made a trip to Ulan Bator, Mongolia. After that, the professor of environmental politics at Ithaca College made it his mission to bike around each of the Great Lakes. Grand Traverse Bay Receives $1.5 Million in Funding Northern Michigan’s picturesque Grand Traverse Bay will receive $1,589,664 in funding thanks to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow announced that the GLRI will fund three projects in Grand Traverse Bay to protect against invasive species and improve water quality. The Nature Conservancy will receive a $550,070 grant to remove invasive species that harm native fish populations. The Grand Traverse Conservation District will receive a $539,605 grant to improve water quality by preventing the spread of invasive plant species in northwest Michigan. The Watershed Center of Grand Traverse Bay will receive a $499,989 grant to improve water quality in nearby Kids Creek, which flows to Lake Michigan. he only thing worse than not having crucial safety gear on-board is having it fail when needed. This is especially true for EPIRBs (emergency position indicating radio beacons) and PLBs (personal locator beacons), both of which are expected to work flawlessly in an emergency despite minimal maintenance and constant exposure to the harsh marine environment. Let’s take a look at how to keep your emergency beacon ready, willing and able. The “golden day” The primary purpose of any emergency signaling device is to pinpoint a location to ensure rescue within the “golden day:” The first 24 hours following an emergency, during which the majority of survivors can (statistically) be saved. EPIRBs and PLBs go a long way toward accomplishing that goal by taking the "search" out of a search and rescue mission. What they do When activated, EPIRBs transmit a coded message on the 406 MHz distress frequency, which is then relayed via the Cospas-Sarsat global satellite system and earth stations to the nearest rescue coordination center. Most newer EPIRBs and PLBs feature built-in GPS, which can provide location accuracy of 150 feet or less

EPIRB vs. PLB The popularity of PLBs has soared in recent years due to their portability and lower costs. So why not just skip an EPIRB altogether and go with something you can wear? Although PLBs and EPIRBs work in the same manner, there are a number of differences between them beyond size. While PLBs transmit for a minimum of 24 hours, transmit time for an EPIRB is double that. Unlike a PLB, EPIRBs can also be configured to automatically deploy and activate in the event of an emergency. Category I EPIRBs are designed to float free from a sinking vessel and turn on automatically when they come into contact with water, while a Category II rating denotes those that are manually activated and deployed. Unlike a PLB (which is registered to a person), an EPIRB is registered to a specific vessel, which means you can’t legally take it with you to use on-board another vessel. Testing and maintenance Most experts agree that EPIRBs and PLBs should be inspected monthly or prior to any extended cruise. When inspecting and conducting any test, exercise extreme caution to avoid inadvertent activation and generation of a false distress alert. Exterior inspections: Start by inspecting the exterior of your beacon thoroughly for any physical damage: Corrosion,

cracking, water ingress, etc. For EPIRBs, you will want to include the mounting bracket or housing in your inspection. Category I EPIRBs should be stowed in an unobstructed location so they can float free when released. Such installations will also have a Hydrostatic Release Unit (HRU) designed to sense the increasing water pressure if a vessel sinks, releasing the mount and allowing the EPIRB to float to the surface. HRUs expire every two years, so note the expiration date during your inspection. Battery expiration: Next up is checking the expiration date of the battery. This will be shown on the beacon manufacturer’s label or possibly a separate sticker. Battery life for most units is five years, although some newer models exceed that. The battery must be replaced on or before the expiration date, or if the beacon has been activated in the event of an emergency. NOAA registration sticker: Verify the presence of a current NOAA registration sticker. Federal law requires that all U.S. coded EPIRBs and PLBs be registered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Registering your device provides search and rescue organizations with emergency contact information; if your beacon is activated, they’ll know who they’re looking for. It also gives them someone to call and verify that there's an actual emergency rather than a false alarm, meaning you'll need to update your information if anything changes. This is imperative if ownership of the beacon or vessel changes. Registration can be easily taken care of online at SARSAT.NOAA.GOV/BEACON.HTML. Self-tests: Conduct a self-test following the manufacturer’s instructions once the physical inspection is completed. Following these instructions is crucial to ensure your beacon is working properly and to prevent accidental activation. When conducting a 406 MHz beacon self-test, the EPIRB or PLB is allowed to radiate a single burst, one specially coded so that it’s ignored by the COSPAS-SARSAT system. Most EPIRBs will have a visible test switch, one that’s spring loaded (so it can’t be left on inadvertently, draining the battery). PLBs will typically have push-buttons to initiate their self-test feature. Depending on the unit, a combination of beeps and light or strobe flashes will indicate test circuits are operating properly. Many newer EPIRBs and PLBs will display tests and results via an integral display. Finally, if you accidentally activate your EPIRB or PLB, turn the unit off and cancel the false alert by calling the nearest U.S. Coast Guard Station, who in turn will contact the nearest Rescue Coordination Center to cancel the alert. ★

When Bad Weather Strikes If you plan to charter in the lower latitudes, make sure you’re covered in case Mother Nature throws a tantrum. elieve it or not, when it comes to chartering, hurricane season actually has a lot going for it. From June through November, costs are lower, crowds are thinner and the odds are in your favor that the weather will remain gentle. Of course, there is always a risk, and 2017 is a perfect example. First, Hurricane Harvey churned through Central America, struck coastal Texas and Louisiana, and flooded metropolitan Houston. Next, Irma smashed through the Caribbean islands before pounding the entire state of Florida. Then, just days later, Maria took her turn, ripping through the weary Caribbean and utterly devastating Puerto Rico. It’s a powerful reminder: When it comes to traveling in the lower latitudes, Mother Nature is in charge. Storms can intensify and change direction without warning. So, what happens to charter boaters who have their trips interrupted or cancelled by a hurricane? How can we all be better prepared? Insure your travel The best way to manage that calculated risk is to have a travel insurance policy, according to Raul Bermudez. He’s vice president of MarineMax Vacations, which has a charter fleet based in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, charter companies can no longer sell insurance directly; instead, they partner with an insurance company to provide coverage for customers. In the case of MarineMax, charter boaters can obtain travel insurance through American International Group, also known as AIG. “A policy will be roughly 7 percent of the trip’s cost,” Bermudez says. “You can cover just the boat, or you can do a whole package that covers your air travel as well.” Policies will handle delays, lost luggage, family illnesses and other emergencies. Some will even cover the cost of a captain if you have just one person on-board who’s qualified to run the charter boat, and that person becomes ill. You can also obtain coverage for severe weather, including hurricanes. “You might have a different deductible for weather,” Bermudez advises. "You’ll want to do your research when you’re ready to make your charter reservations.” That research should include what airlines are willing

to offer coverage in the event of delays and cancellations. If you’re shopping for policies among different insurance companies, you also need to be sure the agent and company are properly licensed in your state. If you’re already enjoying your charter vacation when a storm blows up or changes direction, however, Bermudez says the MarineMax team will work with you to find a solution. “If we have to call you back to the base for safety, we’ll extend the back end of your trip,” he says. “Or, if you have to go home, we’ll refund those days. That’s us, though; check with the company you’re using to find out how they would handle those situations.” Don’t miss the fine print Another important tip: Read the terms of your preferred charter company’s cancellation policy. Some companies, like Cape Coral, Florida-based Southwest Florida Yachts, make special allowances for hurricanes. “(Normally) we allow the charter customer to rebook the boat within six months of the original charter date if they have to cancel, with only a $100 rescheduling fee,” says Barb Hansen, who has owned and operated Southwest Florida Yachts with her husband, Vic, for more than 30 years. “In the event they cancel due to a hurricane, we give them up to a year to rebook their charter with no fee.” Like Bermudez, Hansen says her business sees a very small number of cancellations each year, and those are primarily due to illness or a family emergency. “As far as hurricanes go, I think we had one class that had to reschedule,” she recalls. “They moved their dates to January and we rebooked them with no problem.” If charter boaters are already on the water when a storm threatens and they have to cut their charter short, Hansen says her team would definitely work with them. “Most likely, we would offer them some free days on their next charter to equal any they lost,” she says. Get back out there When Hurricane Irma struck, dire headlines flooded Americans’ news feeds. Then along came Maria, and the media shifted gears quickly, understandably shining a light on the millions of American citizens in Puerto Rico whose lives had just been shattered. But what about Florida and beloved Caribbean destinations like the BVI? How are they faring today? Hansen says damage in her corner of southwest Florida was limited to downed trees and shredded landscaping. The islands fared well, including Sanibel, Captiva, Cayo Costa and Gasparilla. “We need to get the word out that Florida is fine, except

for the Keys,” Hansen says. “We want people to know that the islands and the resorts are in great shape.” Admittedly, the BVI were not so fortunate. Favorite watering holes such as Bomba’s Surf Side Shack and One Love were destroyed. Others, like Foxy’s and the Soggy Dollar Bar, were heavily damaged, as was the Bitter End Yacht Club. The Willy T sat on the beach, its main deck gutted and top deck gone. Now? The islands are turning green. Groceries are on the shelves in Road Town and power is steadily coming back. The international airport at Beef Island reopened to commercial flights in October, and tourists were welcomed back in November. Beloved dive sites like “The Wreck of the Rhone” are intact and businesses are rebounding. “Foxy’s, Soggy Dollar and many other places (were) shooting to open by December 1, 2017,” Bermudez reports. In Irma’s wake, MarineMax’s charter boats served as rental housing for insurance adjusters and others involved with relief efforts and rebuilding. At press time, however, the company was calling its boats back for the first post-Irma charter customers, arriving to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. “We’re also sold out for New Years,” Bermudez says. MarineMax Vacations is donating a portion of every booking through March 1, 2018 to the BVI recovery, and Bermudez says he hopes those who are dreaming of a tropical charter vacation will come down this year. Foxy hopes so, too.
“Don’t be blue,” the Jost Van Dyke legend sings. “Foxy’s is open, and the BVI are open too. Intuitive features One noticeable change across some manufacturers' products in 2017 was updated user interfaces. Many manufacturers have taken steps to make new displays easier to operate and more intuitive through new releases and updates. Raymarine introduced its new line of Axiom multifunction displays, as well as an updated version of Lighthouse 3.2. The new Lighthouse software not only makes the Axiom MFDs easy to operate, but it also adds features that are becoming the new standard for most marine displays 7 inches and larger. For example, Lighthouse 3.2 has built-in wireless, which makes for easier software, charting and data updates. It also lets boaters turn a tablet into a full-functioning remote. Mobile devices using Lighthouse 3.2 software act as a fully functioning, independent display by running RayRemote and RayControl apps. With built-in wireless capability, owners can even update the software while on the water using their smartphone’s hotspot.
“Staying connected on and off the water is important to our customers, so we are excited to deliver a one-app approach that will keep them connected to their Garmin electronics, cartography and the marine community.” The ActiveCaptain app also features another trend taking root from 2017 into 2018: Community charting. Manufacturers such as Simrad and Lowrance have had the ability to draw real-time bathymetric information directly on some of their chartplotters; but new displays such as Raymarine’s Axiom displays and even Garmin’s new Striker Plus series will also have this feature. It’s now easier than ever to have incredibly detailed charts on whatever display you use; simply share or download the latest Garmin mobile Quickdraw Contours content from the ActiveCaptain community.
Connected by apps Apps have also been at the forefront of development, increasing the capabilities of onboard displays. Garmin recently released the ActiveCaptain mobile app. This capable app combines the features of its previous apps into one all-inclusive app; it also has new and valuable features. In addition to easy accessing and updating of charts (using the OneChart feature), the new app also provides access to the ActiveCaptain Community. This keeps boaters connected with invaluable feedback on things such as marinas, points of interest and even hazards in the area. Connectivity is more important than ever to many boaters. ActiveCaptain will show notifications on a Garmin display, such as text messages and calls, while your phone is securely stowed. Look for more features that connect smartphones to displays in the near future. Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of global consumer sales, says,
3D sounding Three-dimensional sounding is another trend that will make 2018 an interesting year for marine electronics. It’s now easier than ever to get an easy-to-interpret 3D rendering of the bottom below your boat to help identify fish, structure and bait. Manufacturers, such as Garmin with their Pantopix 3D sounding and Navico’s 3D Structurescan, have their own versions of 3D sounding with unique features and options. Raymarine has entered the fray with its 3D-enabled Axiom displays, offering RealVision 3D Sonar as a standard feature. The technology is improving, allowing for multiple passes to draw more detailed images that show the movement of fish and bait schools. If 3D is something you want, take the time to research all the manufacturers' offerings as they each have their own interpretations, features and costs. ★

Aids to Navigation Understanding ATONS and their meanings. ids to Navigation, also known as ATONS, allow boaters to navigate waterways safely, much like highway stoplights and yield signs on the road. Special signs and floating markers using colors, shapes, numbers, lights and even audible signals match nautical chart information and locations for the area. ATONS are located on specific waterways like the Intracoastal Waterway (along the coast from New Jersey to Texas), the Great Lakes, the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Before going out, take time to identify and use these important safety helpers.

Buoys, beacons and lateral aids (A) Buoys are moored to the lake bottom and float with or without a light. If the buoy is cylindrical with a conical top, it's a “nun;” but if the buoy is cylindrical with a flat top, it’s a “can.” Both types have white odd numbers. Beacons are permanently affixed, generally to the bottom of a body of water, and may resemble a platform or piling with or without a light. Beacons have white even numbers. When a light is attached, it’s known as a “light;” one without lights is known as a “daybeacon.” Nautical charts indicate what each type of buoy and beacon is for.

Preferred-channel aids (B) Beacons and buoys with a horizontal band separating green and red colors show the conjunction of navigable channels: The top color indicates the preferred or primary channel. When entering a channel from open water or while navigating upstream, the red top color stays on the boat’s starboard side for the preferred channel and on the port side of the aid for the secondary channel. In reverse, going toward open water, green aids on top stay on the starboard side toward the preferred channel, while the port side goes to the secondary channel. Lateral aids (C) Lateral aids mark well-defined channels, indicating the channel to follow, navigable areas, junctions, forks or splits, safe areas to navigate around hazards and safe centerlines of wide bodies of water. Red aids should be on the starboard side of the boat when entering a channel from open water or proceeding upstream. Remember this as “red right returning.” Red aids have even numbers and increase proceeding inland.

Conversely, moving toward open water, boats should be starboard of green aids. These have odd numbers that decrease as they near open water. Non-lateral aids (D) Diamond-shaped dayboards in white with red, green or black diamonds are location markers, usually with a letter that corresponds to a specific location on a chart. (E) Safe water markers are buoys in a variety of shapes, with/without letters or top marks, and colored vertically in red and white. They mark fairways, mid-channels and offshore approach points with unobstructed water on all sides, and are listed at a specific latitude/longitude position on a chart. (F) Isolated danger markers show the position of a dangerous area that can be passed on either side of the buoy. These have black and red horizontal bands, are sometimes lettered, can be with or without lights and have a double-sphere topmark. (G) Range dayboards — usually shore-mounted pairs — are used as a guide to maintain a straight, safe course in a navigable channel. Separated by a short distance, the front one is shorter than its partner. When lined up, the vessel is on the range line. Range dayboard colors are chosen to be visibly noticeable from the background. (H) Information and regulatory marks have orange and white horizontal colors with black writing indicating warnings and regulations, such as danger (diamond), restricted operations (circle), exclusions (diamond with cross inside) and information (square). These marks may or may not have lights. (I) Special aids indicate features or areas for anchoring, fishnets, cables or pipelines, military areas and jetties. These are yellow, may have one letter, are with or without lights, and come in various shapes. (J) State waters obstruction mark warns of obstructions between the black and white striped buoy and the land where a boat should not pass. There may be a white reflector or white flashing light. The U.S. Coast Guard publication, “U.S. Aids to Navigation System,” is a great reference guide to have on-board. It shows the basic tools to read a chart, information on safety, vessel etiquette, night boating tips and situations with locks and bridges. This booklet identifies the coordinating nautical chart symbols for each buoy and beacon, and includes the discontinued Uniform State Waterway Marking System (USWMS) information that ATONS J replaced. utwater Boats enhances its line of coupe and sedan style craft with the 30 Command Bridge (CB) model. o tell you the truth, it’s odd to be reminiscing about your grandmother while test driving a brand new boat. But that’s exactly what happened to me while aboard Crownline’s new E27 Eclipse sport deckboat. The recollection wasn’t because deckboats were what our family rented every summer during reunions on the very same Chain of Lakes I was putting this 27-foot fiberglasshulled boat through the ringer on — the trial taking place on the stunning 18,770-acre Torch Lake in Michigan’s northwest Lower Peninsula. And it was definitely not because this boat was like one of the bulky, rough-riding deckboats of yesteryear; in fact, this vessel was one of the most comfortable, smooth-riding rigs I’ve ever piloted.

A place for everything Rather, I could hear my grandmother's voice resonating through my mind with an adage she would often voice after I’d take something out of its spot but would be lax when it came to putting it back. That statement? “A place for everything and everything in its place.” While inspecting the E27, I quickly noticed the attention to detail found in every nook and cranny; every inch of this sport deckboat is so well thought out, it leaves zero wasted space. On this boat, there is a place for everything, and everything is in its place.

The Eclipse is the very opposite of what its name implies. It doesn’t disappear within a crowd; rather, it stands out among a mob of other boats with its sleek design and complimentary color combinations. I realized this quickly, as the test drive was near Torch Lake’s popular sandbar, a spot where oodles of boaters anchor up for summer fun. And it was here that heads turned, folks waved and a few thumbs-up came our way. Offered in seven exterior hues, the suave, rounded edges give this craft a sporty look. The weather on the day of testing was as picture perfect as a summer day could be, with bluebird skies and a light breeze. Since the weather made for a quintessential boating day, the heavy beginning-of-the-weekend boat traffic had the lake’s surface roiled in a few places. Hitting the waves, I was impressed with Crownline’s unique Fin-Assisted Safe Turn (F.A.S.T.) Tab Hull Design and vented hull chine with reversed and Delta Performance Pad; the former mending the problem of stern wander, and the rest improving slow-speed stability, time-to-plane acceleration and fuel economy. And, speaking of fuel, the E27 Eclipse comes with a massive 55-gallon gas chamber. The model I tested sported the ship’s standard, powerful Catalyst MerCruiser 6.2L MPI Bravo III. It's quiet enough that you can talk without raising your voice while running top-end. Overall, the craft’s hull design underneath its 102-inch beam — in addition to ergonomically-supportive seating — allowed us a very comfortable 31 mph cruising speed at 3,700 rpms and a top speed of 48 mph at 5,400 rpms. Unlike the deckboats of the past, this boat sliced through the waves we aimed for with nary a thump felt.
Little things mean a lot
The Eclipse E27's interior was well laid out within each compartment and behind several closed doors. The first smart detail I noticed was a simple storage space designed for a carry-on 25-quart marine cooler, located under the seating behind the captain’s chair. (There’s another 36-quart cooler at the bow, to boot.) The compartment’s interior is molded to

and everything in its place. hold the cooler snug, which means there’s no shifting around and rattling during a run. Even the cooler’s side handles have their own space to lay, which keeps them in an upward position so there is no fumbling when removing. That same stall can also be turned into a wetbar for entertaining. Every other storage compartment is a cavern in its own right, and they abound bow to stern, including massive in-floor stowing for skis, wakeboards and the like. These are coated with Gator Guard impact-resistant finish. Articulated hinges hold lids in place, keeping fingers safe from pinching. Even boat bumpers have their own spot, fitting perfectly into mesh netting hidden within the head of the captain’s helm. This not only keeps them in place with easy access, but allows them to dry out quickly and stay mildew-free.
Easy-peasy access
One person you never want to dread your arrival is a boat mechanic. But with great access to the inboard for routine maintenance on the Eclipse, there’s no disgruntled moaning, but rather sighs of relief. Just unlatch and lift the back seat, and gas springs hold open the cover for easy entry. The same holds true for boat riggers getting up and under the helm for wiring new electronics. When empty, the large storage space ahead of the dash will be an incredibly stress-free experience for them, as well. But not many extra accessories are needed, as the dash has all the toggles for interior and exterior LED lighting and bilge pumps, as well as easy-to-see gauge clusters and a Kicker stereo with Bluetooth that’s rigged to eight Wet Sounds speakers, including two at the outer transom’s swim platform/social area. A Raymarine Axiom 7 sonar/GPS combo with Navionics mapping will help you steer clear of dangerous shallow water areas or help you navigate back to the dock in a sudden fog. There are also USB power stations and cup holders galore throughout the entire boat.

or many people, pontoon boats are associated with Grandpa’s old ‘toon idling lazily around the lake with the grandkids fishing off the side. Early pontoons were not fast enough for watersports and had few of the modern conveniences that cuddy cabins and bowriders could provide. In the late 1980s, manufacturers like Manitou Pontoons from Lansing, Michigan saw the potential of a faster pontoon boat and started designing models that could handle bigger engines. When 115-hp outboards appeared on the back of pontoons, customers that once said they would never get a pontoon took a second look.
Triple threat
The addition of a third tube to pontoon designs increased structural stability and buoyancy, and opened the door to even heavier, higher-horsepower engines. A 70 mph pontoon?
When someone invites you to go for a ride on their shiny new pontoon boat, the last thing you expect to need is a pair of goggles. But goggles were the one thing I was missing when I met Greg and Tim from Manitou Pontoons at Duck Lake — about 20 miles south of Lansing, Michigan — to go for an afternoon cruise. Manitou has built pontoon boats at their headquarters in Lansing for more than 30 years. Bimini and mooring cover are also included. A pop-up privacy station allows guests to change out of wet swimsuits before dining at the standard aft table. Electronic options from Manitou’s engine partners are a nice touch. Systems such as Mercury’s joystick controls and VesselView provide engine feedback and precise handling in tight spaces. Manitou’s own Smart Touch screen gives the captain control over lighting, entertainment and navigation features. Manitou recognized the benefits of the third pontoon early on. Structural integrity is improved with the extra tube, but Manitou went a step further and created a patented V-Toon design. The result is a faster, better handling pontoon boat. With precise placement of the third tube and the addition of scientifically designed lifting strakes, Manitou has created a pontoon hull profile that mimics a V-bottomed boat. The design climbs up on plane with minimal bow lift, rides softer and more stable in rough water, and takes a hard turn with the same control and feel as a V-hull. With Tim at the wheel and Greg up front, we went for a ride down the lake. I didn’t really know what to expect from a 70 mph pontoon boat. As we began to climb in speed, I was very glad I remembered what it was like to fly across open water and had taken off my glasses before they were ripped from my face. When we hit just under 70 mph carrying three big guys and a full gas tank, I understood why a dog hangs out of a
car window with his cheeks flapping. I had to fight the urge to grin like a cartoon character and let my tongue hang out. Turning back, I was really impressed by the stable feel as the boat leaned into turns like a V-hull. We climbed back up to full speed again before criss-crossing our own wake and that of another boat. The ride was always dry and smooth.
Best of both worlds
The Manitou X-Plode XT is difficult to label. It's a hard-charging, smooth-riding dayboat that reminds you it’s a pontoon when 15 people can find comfortable seats. With the sport arch, it could be mistaken for a ski boat and easily tows adult wakeboarders and tubers. The best classification I could come up with is “high-speed aquatic entertainment platform.” We ran the X-Plode XT back toward the dock, then stopped and idled up the lake for a while so we could talk. As I tried to think of any last questions or clarification I might need, we all grew quiet, enjoying the fall air and beautiful view. After riding in silence for a few minutes, I turned to Tim, and with a silly grin I said, “Do it again.” Tim’s grin matched mine as he leaned forward and pressed his glasses securely onto his face. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Greg grab one of the handrails as the twin Mercury 400s started to wind up, and we tore off down the lake like a rocket. icroplastics are small plastic pieces less than 5 mm (0.20 inches) long that are proving to be harmful to our waterways. They can come in the form of microbeads and microfibers. Plastics, in general, are the main type of marine debris in the Great Lakes. In fact, about 21.8 million pounds of plastic flow into the Great Lakes each year, according to research from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Characteristics that make plastics so great for consumers and manufacturers are that they are tough, don’t deteriorate easily and are quickly, easily and cheaply made. But those same factors make plastics dangerous for the environment. Plastics end up in the water in many ways. Some are simply thrown in by boaters or those that frequent beaches and shorelines. Some plastics are washed into oceans and lakes as a result of tsunamis or flooding. As the larger pieces break down, they become small enough to enter the microplastics classification. These pieces are tiny enough to be eaten by fish that mistake them for food, which is how these plastics get into the food chain. Microplastics entering the water also come from everyday items used by millions of people in the western world: Makeups, facial scrubs and even toothpaste. Plastic

microbeads, made up of polyethylene or polypropylene, are deliberately used in the manufacture of these products. They have been used in personal care products for more than 50 years, but until about five years ago, most consumers were unaware that their use was so widespread. Microbeads are small enough to rinse down the drain, bypass sewage treatment plant filters and invade aquatic ecosystems. Once in the water, these microbeads can also absorb toxic chemicals commonly found in the water. According to the Alliance for the Great Lakes, microbeads represent 16 percent of the microplastics found in the Great Lakes.
War on microplastics
On December 28, 2015, former U.S. President Barack Obama signed the Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015, which banned the manufacture of personal care products with microbeads after July 2017 and banned the sale of personal care products containing microbeads by 2018. The U.K. parliament also passed legislation prohibiting the use of plastic microbeads in personal care products by the end of 2017. Pressure to do the same is being applied to governments around the world. It appears progress has been made in the battle against microbeads used in manufactured products. However, another plastic “byproduct” is making its way into global waterways, and it’s the result of washing certain types of clothing. Most clothing items, from yoga pants to waterproof jackets and fleeces, are made of synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon. The problem with these clothing items is that small bits of thread break off the garment every time it’s washed. This has led to a number of headlines in the popular press along the lines of “Your yoga pants (or fleece jackets, breathable clothing, microfiber wiping cloths, etc.) are poisoning our water.” Exercise clothing, because of the nature of its use, is washed almost every time it’s worn. A University of California study has found that 1.7 grams (0.06 ounces) of microfibers are

keep more of them out.

shed every time a synthetic fleece jacket is washed. These particles make their way into the waterways, where they are then ingested by fish. The State University of New York has conducted research examining fish caught in the Great Lakes and found microfibers had woven themselves into their gastrointestinal tracts. These same microfibers are the second most common type of pollution in Lake Michigan. A study by the U.S. Geological Survey found that microfibers make up 70.9 percent of all microplastics found in Great Lakes rivers. British Columbia research revealed that 25,000 plastic particles and microfibers were contained in one cubic meter of water collected along the B.C. coast. The Nanaimo campus of Vancouver Island University has been examining B.C. shellfish. Dr. Sarah Dudas is leading a team that has harvested thousands of oysters from various locations along the B.C. coast. She reports finding microfibers in almost every oyster. Dr. Dudas says research has yet to determine how microplastics might affect food safety or food security.
Steps forward
Patagonia, one of the largest manufacturers of clothing made of synthetic material, has embarked on a program to educate buyers on microfiber water pollution. Patagonia provides customers with information on the care of any synthetic product (PATAGONIA.COM/SYNTHETIC-MICROFIBERPOLLUTION.HTML). They advise customers that research shows synthetic jackets washed in top-loading washing machines shed five times more microfibers than those washed in a front loader. Patagonia also makes available — at a cost of $20 — a GUPPYFRIEND bag into which a user can put synthetic clothing for washing. The bag and clothing is washed normally, but the tight weave of the bag's material prevents most of the microfibers from exiting the washing machine drain. The microfibers can then be taken from the bag and disposed of as ordinary garbage. Patagonia also recommends installing a permanent washing machine filter,Wexco’s Filtrol 160, to help reduce the amount of microfibers that go down the drain (SEPTICSAFE.COM/ WASHING- MACHINE-FILTER). This filter was developed years ago to keep lint out of septic fields. Patagonia also notes a device currently under development called a Coraball that, when thrown into a washer along with clothes, gathers up microfibers, which can then be removed and disposed of with normal garbage (CORABALL.COM).
A number of washing machine manufacturers are working on built-in filter systems that will trap microfibers for easy removal, as most dryers currently on the market trap lint. Researchers are also examining the possibility that additional filtering at sewage treatment plants might be helpful in reducing microfibers and microbeads in the waterways. Patagonia and other fleece manufacturers also remind users that it's not necessary to wash any good quality fleece item after a single wearing. They note that if the outer shell of a breathable fleece-lined jacket gets muddy, it can be wiped clean with a damp cloth or sponge. Other manufacturers remind users that many items can be hand-rinsed in freshwater and hung to dry naturally. Individual boaters can help reduce microfiber pollution by using 100 percent cotton cleaning cloths on-board, rather than microfiber cleaning cloths commonly found on boats. Boaters can also dress against the cold by wearing cotton or wool garments rather than fleece clothing. When replacing washing machines, either on a boat or at home, opt for front loaders to help reduce microfiber waste. As more people become aware of microplastic pollution, thousands of shoreside residents all across the Great Lakes spend a day or two each year on organized beach cleanups. While the Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015 is a great step forward, and while the clothing industry works on finding ways to reduce microfiber water pollution, these are just the first steps forward. We must work together — as boaters, manufacturers, lawmakers and environmentalists — to take more steps forward. An informed public can and will be the first line of defence against further microplastic pollution in our waters. ★

However, all boat owners likely agree on one downside to the lifestyle: Owning a boat can get pricey. Since purchasing boat insurance isn’t mandatory in the United States, it can be tempting to take your chances without boat insurance while looking for ways to save. Of course, that’s a big risk. Anyone who has been in an accident or has had a problem with their boat probably didn't expect it to happen. Having boat insurance can end up saving boaters serious dough in the long run — even if they’re a safe boater. Some marinas even require boaters to have insurance in order to dock. To take some trepidation out of the idea of purchasing boat insurance, we spoke with representatives from major insurance providers serving the Great Lakes about the most common questions they receive from boaters. Hopefully hearing what these companies have to say will give boaters the confidence and knowledge needed to invest in boat insurance.

Progressive Insurance Progressive is another easily recognizable insurance giant in the U.S. We spoke with Rick Stern, a boat product manager in Mayfield Village, Ohio, about the company’s boat insurance options. Most often, Stern says he’s asked: “I have a small boat that didn’t cost very much. Do I really need boat insurance?” Stern says sometimes those who opt not to have insurance are boaters with a relatively inexpensive watercraft who figure they’ll just take the financial hit if their watercraft sinks or is stolen. No big deal, right? Stern says imagine this scenario: Your 16-footer sinks at someone’s dock in 15 feet of water. It can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to refloat and remove it. Or what if your boat breaks loose from the dock and drifts into your neighbor’s brand-new wake boat? The cost to repair your neighbor’s boat might run into the thousands, and you may be personally liable for that cost if you don’t have insurance. Another factor uninsured boaters may not consider is the personal liability piece. Having boat insurance means you’re protected from accidents that may injure someone on your boat or another boat. Without the protection of insurance, situations like these may put the boater, and their friends and families, at tremendous financial risk. O
ne of the best parts of cruising the Great Lakes is getting off the big water to explore new paths and fresh horizons. Sometimes we journey for the day, other times for a long weekend. But when it comes to enjoying a longer cruise, it’s hard to resist the allure of Ontario’s Trent-Severn Waterway, described by many as one of the top cruising routes in the world. Originally conceived as a military lifeline and commercial superhighway, the Trent–Severn Waterway meanders through a system of natural lakes and man-made canals. The waterway cuts through pastoral farmlands and the rugged Canadian Shield as it bisects southern Ontario from the town of Trenton, on eastern Lake Ontario, to Port Severn, on Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay. From end to end, the Trent-Severn is a 240-mile (386-kilometer) run stitched together by no fewer than 16 lakes, 44 locks, 17 swing bridges and the only functioning marine railway in North America. Boaters who have experienced this magnificent waterway often describe its transit as the experience of a lifetime — even if they do it every year. The route that defines today’s Trent-Severn Waterway was first traversed by Samuel de Champlain in 1615. As European settlement pushed deeper into North

America, the desire for a second water route connecting Lake Ontario to Lake Huron rapidly grew — partly out of growing commercial need and partly out of concern that war with the newly-formed United States could cut off access to the upper lakes at Detroit or Port Huron, isolating important trading posts farther up the system. Royal Engineers surveyed Champlain’s portages and determined that a series of locks could make it possible to run barges from Lake Ontario clear through to Georgian Bay. Construction began in 1833, but was quickly bogged down in political quagmire, with multiple competing interests pulling strings to try and directly benefit from what was, at the time, one of the most ambitious construction projects in the world. Decades of political intrigue, rebellions and war brought endless delays, and it was not until 1920 that the final leg was completed, enabling the first complete transit from Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. From a commercial perspective, the Trent-Severn was obsolete years before it opened, having been designed for ships that were no longer large enough to be economically viable. Today, it’s the exclusive playground of recreational boaters. Transiting the full length of the Trent-Severn

It’s impossible to think of the TrentSevern without thinking of the locks. There are 43 of them on the main route, plus one more on a side route connecting the community of Lindsay for a total of 44 locks in all. So why is the last one in Port Severn named Lock 45? When the former flight lock in Burleigh Falls was modernized in 1968, it went from a double lock configuration (Locks 28 and 29) to a larger, single-chamber design. The new facility opened as Lock 28, and Lock 29 no longer exists. Today, sneaky parents promise their kids ice cream if they can behave themselves all the way to Lock 29.

Conventional Locks Most of the locks are of the standard gravity-fed type, and are manually powered. A few electrically powered locks exist though, and one or two that have had partial upgrades over the years are manual on one end and electric on the other.

Waterway takes about five days, or a full week if you take your time and wander slowly. Because it’s a comparatively linear route, turning around and returning in the opposite direction still yields something new to look at every inch of the way. Depending on weather and water levels, the system normally opens in late May and runs until early October.
The Trent
The historic community of Trenton, Ontario marks the starting point for an upstream tour. Leaving Lake Ontario behind, you officially enter the system as you pass beneath the sweeping arc of the Dundas Street Bridge, where it’s impossible to miss the “Gateway to the Trent-Severn” lettering adorning its south face. With a population of about 20,000 people, Trenton is a great port to explore. The first class Trent Port Marina situated on the west side of the river, just south of the downstream bridge, is the perfect stopping point to provision and prepare for your trip farther north. This friendly city-run marina offers every amenity and is within walking distance to town where you will find waterfront restaurants, unique shops, groceries/ supplies and year-round events. Fuel and pumpout
can be found adjacent to the marina at the Trent Port Fueling Station. At normal water levels, the minimum bridge clearance on the Trent-Severn Waterway is around 22 feet; if you’re in a sailboat with a taller mast, Trenton is your last chance to have the mast stepped and stowed for the transit. Water depth through the southern end of the Trent-Severn, from locks 1 through 19, is generally maintained at about 8 feet in the main channels. From locks 20 through 45, things shallow a bit to an average depth of around 6 feet. Some areas just off the channel are quite a bit shallower than that, so unless you have local knowledge, make it a point to stay within the navigation markers at all times and keep those charts handy. As you continue upstream on the Trent River, you’ll soon come to Lock 1. Transiting the locks is a big part of the Trent-Severn experience, especially if it’s your first time. It’s a fairly straightforward procedure, and the friendly lock staff are more than happy to help boaters learn the ropes. The lock chambers are at least 84 feet long and 23 feet wide, so it’s not unusual to make the trip through the lock in the company of several other boats. Most of the Trent-Severn locks are still original equipment and are manually powered, so once you’re
Flight Locks Where the height difference between the locks is considerable, double locks — consisting of two back-to-back chambers — are used. There are two flight locks on the Trent-Severn: At Ranney Falls, where Locks 11 and 12 lift boats a total of 48 feet, and at Healey Falls, where Locks 16 and 17 raise boats by 54 feet. Hydraulic Lift Locks The Trent-Severn includes two hydraulic lift locks, the only two in North America and two of only nine in the world. They’re also the two largest, with Peterborough being the tallest on the planet and Kirkfield a close second. Big Chute Railway Though it’s called Lock 44, the marine railway at Big Chute is a massive dry dock on wheels that drives boats over a long, steep hill. It’s hard to say if it’s more fun to ride it yourself or watch other boats make the passage.

PERMITS AND FEES The Trent-Severn locks are operated by Parks Canada. You’ll need a lock pass to transit the system. Several options are available, including a full season pass. Permits can be purchased at any lock station. Mooring or camping overnight at a lock station also requires a permit, and these can also be purchased on-site.

inside the lock chamber don’t be surprised to see the staff take positions at large steel handlebars protruding from the ground and begin pushing them around in a circular motion to open or close the lock gates. Once the lock is secure and the staff ensures all boats are ready, the lockmaster throws a lever and gravity takes care of the rest. At Lock 1, your boat will rise a total of 18 feet. After a few moments, the upper gates open and you proceed on your way. The lower Trent River flows alongside peaceful farmland and rolling hills. You’ll pass through several locks in short succession as you bypass a number of dams once used for hydro production and flood control. If you care to wet a line, you’ll find walleye, smallmouth bass and muskie are relatively abundant here, along with bluegill and yellow perch. The first community of any size that you’ll come to as you slowly wander upstream is the village of Campbellford, a little more than 30 miles and a full day’s cruise from Trenton. You’ll know you’re getting close once you clear the flight locks at Ranney Falls — two large locks constructed back-to-back in order to manage the 48-foot difference in water level there. Once an extremely wealthy community, Campbellford is still known for its stately Victorian homes and tree-lined streets. It’s also home to a craft brewery,

Church-Key Brewing Company; a chocolate factory, Blommer Chocolate Company; a butter tart bakery, The Butter Tart Factory; and one of eastern Ontario’s few remaining rural cheese factories, Empire Cheese. Old Mill Park, in the center of town, is an ideal spot to tie up for a while and go exploring. There’s room for about a dozen boats on the seawall here, making it a popular spot to stay for the night. Campbellford is a popular stop for cruisers, boasting a vibrant downtown all along the water with several shops and restaurants.
Lake Country
Leaving Campbellford behind and continuing upstream, peaceful villages and beautiful countryside will beckon you to slow down and enjoy the ride. Before long, you arrive at the village of Hastings, where you’ll say farewell to the Trent River and hello to Rice Lake, the first of many as you enter central Ontario’s lake country. Named for its abundant wild rice paddies, Rice Lake is a near 20-mile stretch of open water, and a nice change of pace from the previous day’s river travel. The second largest lake on the system, Rice is a beautiful boating destination in its own right, lined with numerous private cottages and cottage resorts, many of which offer a range of services to transient cruisers. Once you get about halfway down Rice Lake and

approach the community of Harwood on the south shore, you’ll want to keep an eye out for the old sunken railway bridge that once spanned the lake there. A series of barely-submerged cribs extend well into the lake from both shorelines as you approach Tick Island, making it imperative to stay in the marked channel as you pass. A short while after clearing these cribs, you’ll turn north up the Otonabee River and continue on your way to Peterborough. One of the largest communities you’ll pass on the Trent-Severn Waterway, Peterborough is a thriving city of about 80,000 people. As the first town in Canada to install electric street lights, Peterborough is known for its elegant homes and bustling local economy. If you need to shop or reprovision, this is the place to do so; you’ll find just about everything you need in town. It’s also a nice spot to get out of the boat for a while and enjoy a pleasant dinner. By far the biggest attraction in Peterborough — both figuratively and literally — is the massive Peterborough Lift Lock, the highest hydraulic boat lift in the world and one of only two such structures found in North America (the other is in Kirkfield, a little farther along the route). Completed in 1904, the Peterborough Lift Lock consists of two parallel, box-like chambers, each 140 feet long, 32 feet wide and capable of holding about
274,000 gallons of water. Boats enter these chambers, which are then raised 65 feet straight up on enormous hydraulic rams. Once at the top, the chamber opens and the boats continue on their way. Designated a national historic site in 1979, the Peterborough Lift Lock is also the first lock in the world to be built from concrete, and it remains the largest structure in the world built from unreinforced concrete. A trip through the Peterborough Lift Lock is an experience not to be forgotten, and a highlight of any trip on the Trent-Severn Waterway. Leaving Peterborough, the route continues north on the Otonabee River passing through more pleasant villages and farms. You’ll see more and more shoreline cottages appearing now, as the Trent Severn arrives in Ontario’s Kawartha Lakes tourist region. The sheer beauty of this area is often astounding to those witnessing it for the first time, and you’ll find it impossible to simply plow through it — the pull of wanting to pause for a photo of this, or a better view of that, is simply too great. As you make your way through the lakes — Clear, Stoney, Buckhorn, Chemong, Pigeon, Sturgeon, Cameron, Lovesick, Balsam, Mitchell and Canal – it’s easy to envision yourself following Champlain’s path and imagine what the area might have been like when he first paddled through it more than 400 years ago. Today, the Kawarthas are vacation country. By all means, stop here for lunch or an afternoon ice cream; cottage resorts on the lakes offer everything from casual fare to fine dining. Wandering the small waterfront villages is a must, especially if you like to shop for curios or enjoy freshly-made pastries. If you’re a Tragically Hip fan, then you’ll definitely want to spend a night in the village of Bobcaygeon and watch the constellations reveal themselves one star at a time. Shortly after passing through shallow Mitchell Lake on the western end of the chain, you’ll arrive at the Kirkfield Lift Lock, also known as Lock 36. Second only to the similarly-constructed Peterborough Lift Lock in height, this massive structure raises boats 49 feet using similar parallel chambers raised on equally enormous hydraulic rams. Built in 1907, the Kirkfield lock was modernized in 1969 with fully electric controls. Given its massive height and its situation relative to the surrounding landscape, driving into the raised lock chamber can be a hair-raising experience; when looking straight ahead, you see nothing but sky. The sensation is a bit like you’re about to drive off a cliff. You miss this when traversing the lock in the opposite direction. That said, boaters traveling the opposite direction do face the same experience once they get to Peterborough. You’ll notice at the Kirkfield lock numerous signs reminding boaters that this location marks the highest
THE BLUE LINE When you’re ready to pass through a lock, pull up to the Blue Line — a strip of seawall painted blue — where you tie up and wait your turn to go through. Lock staff monitor the Blue Line constantly, but if you feel you need to get their attention, three quick toots of your horn or a whistle is the standard signal that you’re waiting and ready to go.
If the chamber gates are open, the lock staff may simply wave you straight in. If the lock gates are closed, you’ll need to allow boats that are already inside the lock to exit before you will be allowed to enter. It’s generally best to remain tied up along the Blue Line until lock staff direct you to move. If you’re locking through with other traffic, boats are typically loaded with a view to the most effective fit, without regard for who was there first. Normally large boats are loaded first, with smaller vessels following and filling the spaces between. Have your fenders, lines and a boat hook ready as you enter the lock chamber. You do not tie up to the inside of the lock chamber, but simply loop your bow and stern lines loosely around cables hanging inside. Shut down the engines and keep the boat hook ready for unexpected surprises. When locking up, for example, you may find your boat suddenly being pushed by winds as it rises in the air and becomes more exposed. Most of the lock stations have washrooms on site, and many have picnic areas where you can stretch and get out on solid land for a while.

point of elevation on the system — no matter which direction you travel from here, you’re now heading downstream. As a result, from this point on marker buoys will be reversed to what you’ve seen so far. Continuing on to Georgian Bay, you’ll now want to keep the red buoys to port and green markers to starboard. Make a note of this somewhere on your helm. It’s easy enough to remember within the confines of the canal, but when you reach an open lake, you’ll be glad for the reminder. From the Kirkfield lock, the Trent-Severn Waterway continues west through narrow Canal Lake and a short but fairly nondescript length of canal before emerging on the eastern side of Lake Simcoe, Ontario’s fourth largest lake. Named for John Graves Simcoe, the first LieutenantGovernor of Upper Canada, Lake Simcoe is a large body of water stretching about 19 miles long, 16 miles across and with a surface area of approximately 280 square miles. It’s understandably a major boating area and home to several outstanding marinas, yacht clubs and yacht dealerships. The City of Barrie, on the western end of the lake in Kempenfelt Bay, offers every possible type of attraction, restaurant and shop, from t-shirt joints and hot dog stands to fine dining and haute couture. Boaters could easily spend a week or more enjoying Lake Simcoe alone, and many do just that. For those with the time to explore the Trent-Severn at a proper, leisurely pace, Simcoe is an absolute delight.
The Severn
At the north end of Lake Simcoe, you’ll pass through Atherley Narrows and into adjacent Lake Couchiching, where the town of Orillia soon appears on the western shoreline. Welcoming boaters with its outstanding marine facilities, great restaurants and still more shopping, Orillia is one of the most popular destinations

on the Trent-Severn, with some sort of festival or event going on every weekend throughout the summer. About 10 miles away, at the north end of the lake near the town of Washago, the waterway continues on to Georgian Bay. Now passing through the magnificent Canadian Shield, the view changes yet again, dominated by enormous granite outcrops, weather-beaten pines and dark waters reminiscent of Tom Thomson paintings. That’s especially true once you clear shallow Sparrow Lake, enter the gorge and begin descending the Severn River itself. If you haven’t felt the pull of Samuel de Champlain yet, this area will do the trick. All too quickly, you’ll arrive at Big Chute, home of the only functional marine railway in North America and one of only a handful in the world. Also known as Lock 44, the Big Chute Marine Railway isn’t a lock at all, but a patent slip; it's sort of a dry dock on rails that carries boats over a large, steep hill. You motor into the semi-submerged carriage, which then moves ahead up and out of the water, with your boat secured in place by slings as the water drains off. The carriage then rides on dual tracks over 600 feet of Canadian Shield, where it eventually comes to a stop in the water on the other side of the berm. As it settles into place, your boat refloats and

you idle away. The railway you ride on today is actually the third one built on the site, completed in 1978 and capable of carrying boats up to 100 feet (the original, built in 1917, could only manage boats to 35 feet, while its 1923 replacement took those up to 60 feet in length). A ride on the Big Chute Marine Railway is an extraordinary experience and, like the lift locks, is something never forgotten. Once the railway plops you back in the water in the Six Mile Channel, it’s a short and easy ride through an island-studded lake called Gloucester Pool to the little village of Port Severn. This is where you’ll find a number of excellent marina facilities, great restaurants and the final lock in the system (or the first, if you’re headed downbound). When the lower lock gates open here, your hull gets its first taste of Lake Huron as you glide slowly out onto Georgian Bay. If you’re continuing on into Lake Huron, take a moment to tie up on the lower wall and really study your charts since, depending on which route you take, the buoy situation can change yet again. Pass through the Potato Island channel and you’re considered to be traveling upbound, meaning you keep red buoys to the right. Pass through the Waubushene channel and you’re technically traveling downbound, so the reds stay to port. This whole area is loaded with rock shoals — especially the section around the Mary Rocks — so ensure you’re clear on the marker sequence before you go anywhere at all. You may also choose to spend a few days on Georgian Bay, then turn around and go right back the way you came, seeing the Trent-Severn again from the other direction. Hundreds of boaters do just that every year, happy to surrender again to the charms of one of the world’s greatest cruising routes. ★

Tiger Lily is a 1957 20-foot Chris-Craft Continental that was shipped from the Cadillac plant to Cooper Chris-Craft Sales in St. Clair Shores, Michigan on October 24, 1956. Today, she's powered by the original Chris-Craft 175-hp MCL flathead six-cylinder engine. Unfortunately, that is all I know of the boat’s history up until I purchased her from the previous owner in February 2011 in Lake Leelanau. He had owned the boat for about five years with the intention of restoring it himself, but decided he had too many projects in the pipeline and agreed to sell the boat to me. She was a gray pattern boat at that time with no name and provided a home for a bobcat that lived in the barn where she was stored. However, all of the original hardware for the boat was still present and the engine would rotate. I had worked with Marine Services Unlimited on the restoration of my other classic boat with very favorable results and decided to have them restore Tiger Lily. The restoration included all new structural wood except for the stringers; a complete engine rebuild with upgrades to electronic ignition, hardened valves and seats; and other improvements for reliability and durability. The restoration also included re-chroming all the hardware and outfitting a new interior with custom features to improve upon the original design. The deck, hull and bottom were totally replaced using epoxy construction with 20 coats of sealer and varnish to complete the brightwork. The massive restoration project was completed in early 2015, and a water test was successfully enjoyed on Houghton Lake in April of that year. My wife and firstmate, Marianne, then named the boat Tiger Lily to be a sister ship to our 1947 17-foot Deluxe Runabout, Water Lily. Tiger Lily is regularly enjoyed at our cottage on Lobdell Lake, near Fenton, and is shown and run at numerous classic boating events in the Midwest. My family is looking forward to many more years of enjoying Tiger Lily with fresh coats of varnish every few years to keep her the good-looking lady that we love!
