y the time February rolls around, some of us have given up on our New Year's resolutions and we're knee-deep in Midwest snow; however, there's always the anticipation of boat shows to look forward to. Boat shows have picked up pace in the last few years; some of the larger shows, like the Miami International Boat Show, have changed venues to accommodate more vendors and attendees. The Detroit Boat Show (p. 30), which has been around for 60 years, is experiencing a strong resurgence. This year's event will cover nearly 450,000 square feet of exhibit space with about 1,000 boats on display. Speaking of the Motor City, Detroit is the perfect playground for boaters, providing access to Lake St. Clair, Lake Huron and Lake Erie. The city has made a strong comeback, and people now flock there to enjoy its riverside attractions, new sports district, restaurants, breweries and many museums. (p. 64). For those of us who want to escape the snow, The Moorings is reopening its St. Martin base in February, five months after Hurricane Irma swept through last September (p. 58). Read my feature to see why the islands of St. Martin, St. Barts and Anguilla are well worth the trip. Stay warm!
When the snow flies in the Upper Peninsula, we like to head south to Traverse City, Michigan. The area’s popular summertime attractions — scenery, wineries, restaurants and picture-perfect downtown — are not as crowded and take on a quieter, different kind of beauty in the winter. HHH

Pollack As much as I enjoy the excitement of Detroit in winter — watching ice skaters at Campus Martius Park downtown, cross-country skiing at Huron-Meadows Metropark and attending Detroit Red Wings hockey games at the new Little Caesars Arena — I also like to escape Up North (as we say in Michigan) to Oscoda, where we have a cottage on Lake Huron. From the warmth of our cozy fireplace, it's so peaceful to watch the waves splash against the shoreline, the occasional floating iceberg and snowflakes falling through the evergreens. Still, my dreams always drift back to summer when we can get out and enjoy the water and Michigan's great golf courses. HHH

The Sportsman’s Inn Offers Winter Sports Package Winter sports fans and deal-seekers should check out the Sportsman’s Inn new group winter sports package. The Sportsman’s Inn is located in Killarney, Ontario on the Killarney Channel and at the foothill of the LaCloche Mountains. In an effort to attract snowmobile clubs, cross-country skiers and other winter sports groups, the Inn is offering winter rates from $129 (CAN) per person for
groups that occupy 10 or more rooms. This deal includes breakfast and dinner. The Sportsman’s Inn was recently purchased by entrepreneur Holden Rhodes, who ordered a massive renovation of the property. Pelee Island Launches New Ferry

By spring 2018, visitors will have a new mode of transportation to Pelee Island, a spot of land that sits in Lake Erie between Ontario and Ohio. The Pelee Islander II is a 222-foot ferry that can transport 34 vehicles and 399 passengers. Controversy swirled around the ferry after the Ontario Ministry of Transportation decided to commission the vessel from a manufacturer in Valdivia, Chile in 2015. Critics argued the ship should be built locally, but the ministry countered that no Canadian builder had the facilities to build a ferry to the necessary size. The United State Power Squadrons, also called America’s Boating Club, has just unveiled a new logo. The U.S. Power Squadrons is one of the country’s largest nonprofit boating organizations. The group is undergoing a massive rebranding process, and the new logo is one of the first of many updates. The nonprofit also plans on tweaking its website, social media platforms and collateral materials. The new navy and red logo features the organization’s “America’s Boating Club” appellation. The Power Squadrons offers boaters classes in seamanship, navigation and other related subjects. It acts as both a boating and social club, and has more than 27,000 members across the country. Become a Sober Skipper The Sea Tow Foundation and Freedom Boat Club are partnering to encourage boaters to boat sober. The two organizations are promoting their Sober Skipper Program, in which the individual responsible for piloting the boat for the day is encouraged to wear a yellow “Sober Skipper” wristband. The two organizations will be distributing the Sober Skipper wristbands to Freedom Boat Club members and their local communities. The Brunswick Corporation has announced that it plans to sell Sea Ray within the first six months of 2018. Sea Ray is one of 15 brands that make up the Brunswick Boat Group. Brunswick says it will continue to manage and operate Sea Ray as normal until the sale is complete. “Our remaining brands will continue to be important elements of a robust, balanced marine business, with our boat portfolio serving healthy, expanding market segments,” says Mark Schwabero, Brunswick chairman and CEO. “This more focused strategy will provide the best opportunities for growth and will complement our other marine offerings, including engines, parts and accessories. Navionics Launches Post-Irma Remapping Effort
Navionics is partnering with fellow industry leaders and the South Florida boating community to remap marine and inland waterways impacted by Hurricane Irma. When the hurricane passed through the area, some marine resources were affected, as well as shorelines and bottom contours. By working together, the remapping initiative will improve boater safety in these areas. The month-long event kicked off January 19, 2018. Individuals wishing to participate are invited to record their sonar logs and upload data to Navionics, as well as add marine debris locations throughout South Florida. Participants who send in sonar logs of the affected area by February 20, 2018, will receive one year of daily updates for their plotter card ($99 value), which includes access to all local chart updates resulting from this event. Enbridge and Michigan Come To Agreement on Line 5 Pipeline In December, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder signed an agreement requiring Enbridge, the owner of Line 5, to take immediate steps to improve environmental protection for the Great Lakes and other state waterways. “Business as usual by Enbridge is not acceptable, and we are going to ensure the highest level of environmental safety standards are implemented to protect one of Michigan’s most valuable natural resources,” says Gov. Snyder. “The items required in this agreement are good strides forward. The state is evaluating the entire span of Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline and its future, but we cannot wait for the analyses to be completed before taking action to defend our waterways.” The state is requiring Enbridge to increase transparency by providing the state an opportunity to participate in evaluations of the pipeline. Snyder’s agreement also requires Enbridge to: ■ Replace the portion of Line 5 that crosses beneath the St. Clair River. ■ Undertake a study, in conjunction with the state, on the placement of a new pipeline or the existing dual pipelines in a tunnel beneath the Straits of Mackinac. ■ Temporarily shut down operation of Line 5 in the straits during periods of sustained adverse weather condition. ■ Assess the possible installation of underwater technologies, including cameras, to better monitor the pipeline beneath the Straits of Mackinac. The Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council designated both Evinrude and Mercury Marine as “Green Masters” in its Wisconsin Green Masters Program. Evinrude has been lauded the past few years for its E-TEC G2 engines, which utilize direct fuel injection and produce lower emissions than most outboards. The Burger Boat Company is expanding its product line with the construction of two new 48-foot custom cruisers. 60th Annual Detroit Boat Show Historic, thriving boat show in the heart of Motor City.
ichigan license plates touted the state as the “Water Wonderland” when the forerunner of the Detroit Boat Show debuted in 1957. With 3,100 miles of shoreline spanning four Great Lakes; two peninsulas dotted with 11,000-plus inland lakes; and crisscrossed with more than 30,000 miles of rivers and streams; it’s no surprise that the state is a major player in the pleasure boating industry. As the Michigan Boating Industries Association (MBIA) celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Detroit Boat Show, the association is looking at its history and decades of growth, as well as to the future of the recreational activity that encompasses a wide range of watercraft, from paddleboards to yachts.
“We have a boat for all budgets,” says MBIA Executive Director Nicki Polan, who manages the show. The 2018 event is open to the public February 17-25 at the Cobo Center on Detroit's riverfront, and fills nearly 450,000 square feet of exhibit space with about 1,000 boats ranging from 10-50 feet in length. “There are fishing, cruising, pontoon and ski boats and inflatables,” Polan says. “[There are] great displays of all boats and price points — everything but sailboats.” The show is an opportunity for shoppers to see new model introductions and innovations, and to easily compare a variety of watercraft. In addition to boats, exhibitors represent accessories and gear, lifts, trailers, motors, nautical gifts and art, boating-related services and marinas. A Detroit staple MBIA, a non-profit trade association, has owned the Detroit Boat Show since 1958; however, the area’s first such display was held in February of 1957 at the Detroit Artillery Armory on Eight Mile Road. Then sponsored by The Detroit News, the show’s doors opened an hour earlier than planned to accommodate the throng of 3,000 eager early-bird attendees pressing to view the more than 150 exhibits. At that time, houseboats were promoted as a way to enjoy a getaway without paying real estate taxes on a cottage, and a 200-seat theater showed “the latest color and sound film on boating, water skiing and cruising.” The show offered courses in boater safety, navigation, elementary seamanship, and rope knots and splices. The News sponsored a model yacht contest, and awarded 14-foot Nipper class sailboats to junior division winners John H. Gibson and Raymond

Vander. Neither of the boys had ever sailed anything other than their model boats, and they were “tongue-tied with joy” in accepting their prizes, which included boating classes. Since, the event has had several names over the years. As the Detroit Sports & Boat Show, it was promoted as the “world’s most complete show” and admission was 60 cents. In 1972, the Greater Michigan Boat Show outgrew the Armory and moved to Cobo to handle the increased number of exhibitors and visitors. From 1983-1990, it was the Detroit Boat and Fishing Show to reflect MBIA’s reach into the sport fishing market, and for three years the association sponsored the Blue Water Spring Salmon Classic. Throughout its six decades, the Detroit Boat Show has fluctuated in size — a reflection of the economy, Polan says. At its peak in 1989, exhibitors filled a record 600,000 square feet of Cobo, while from 2010-2012 the show occupied about 200,000 square feet. The 2018 show is experiencing its eighth consecutive year of growth and expects attendance of more than 60,000. Dealers count on sales and leads generated at the show, in some cases accounting for half of their yearly revenue; in the past, that has amounted to more than 1,500 boats valued at $50 million sold during or as a result of the Detroit Boat Show. Reaching a new generation Michigan has long been among the top states in the nation with the most registered boats, breaking the one million mark in 1999. It trails Florida and Minnesota, although, according to Polan, Michigan would rank higher if it included paddle and other small personal watercraft in its count, like other states do. Michigan is the third largest marine market in the nation, with annual sales just behind the

year-round boating states of Florida and Texas. Michigan’s recreational boating industry accounts for more than 58,000 direct and indirect jobs and 1,400 businesses, with an economic impact of $7.4 billion. MBIA has a major focus on what lies ahead for boating, and Polan is working with its members to encourage the next wave of boaters. “Like all industries, we’re concerned about future generations. We want them to understand the joys of boating,” Polan says. In an effort to reach younger audiences, MBIA offers free admission to the show for those 30 and under on “Millennial’s Night Out,” Thursday, February 22. That’s also Career Day for high school and college students looking for information on scholarships and jobs in the boating industry. Polan notes that boat manufacturers are appealing to younger buyers by making smaller boats that are more affordable, and by offering day cruising models with open bows, which allow more people on-board. She points to improvements in pontoons, which now perform more like cruisers, and crossover boats that can be used for fishing, cruising and towing. Polan also notes a growth in shared boat ownership organizations, which introduces people to the lifestyle. “The idea is to get people on the water and see the fun you can have — the memories you can make,” Polan says. “Eventually, they may want to own their own boat.” H

Outboards vs. Sterndrives When you’re in the market for a new boat, how do you decide which engine option is right for you? t last. You’re ready to buy a new boat and the winter boat shows are here. It’s time to pound the docks and convention hall floors so you can talk with dealers, ask plenty of questions and do some serious research. After all, you want that new boat in the water at the start of the summer season. Whether you’re a first-time boat buyer or a more experienced owner who’s looking to downsize, you might be considering some sort of dayboat, perhaps a pontoon or a runabout. So you’re likely also wondering if you should pursue outboard power or sterndrive power. How do you decide which type of engine is right for you? Look aft for design trade-offs First, ask yourself: How do I plan to spend my time on the water? Every boater’s perfect day looks a little bit different. Are you interested in going fishing or enjoying watersports? Do you need extra space for gear? Will you stay close to home, or do you plan to do some longer distance harbor hopping? When you’ve determined what type of boat will best meet your needs, an important piece of that puzzle is the power package. While an outboard hangs off the transom, a sterndrive requires a bilge compartment, and the boat’s layout must accommodate this. “An outboard engine will allow more usable space for seating and storage,” says Bryce LeRoy, service manager for B & E Marine in Michigan City, Indiana. “You also have to remember that, in many cases, you’ll lose the swim platform option that you could have with a sterndrive.” Even if your outboard-powered boat does have a swim platform, it won’t be the expansive, integrated version, and the boat won’t have quite the same aesthetics. “When the sterndrive is concealed within the boat, you have a clean aft end,” explains John Buelow, Mercury Marine’s vice president of global category management. “You have the seamless swim platform as well.” He notes that many saltwater boaters do appreciate the ability to trim their outboard engines completely out of the water, an option that is not available to those with sterndrives.

Don’t fret about performance Thanks to significant innovation in recent years, the gaps have narrowed between outboard and sterndrive engine technology, from top speeds and cruising speeds to overall cost. Even sound levels aren’t that different anymore. “Outboards are quieter than ever,” Buelow says. “It’s not like the old days.” LeRoy agrees: “Manufacturers like Sea Ray have added Quiet Ride, which reduces engine noise aboard the sterndrive boats, and several of the new outboard models are very quiet. You have to experience them to hear the difference.”

Outboard engines do remain more fuel efficient than sterndrives; however, if you take a boat on the water with an outboard, and then take out the same model with a sterndrive for that design, the fuel economy will be similar. “The outboard might come out a bit better, but it depends on the type of boat,” LeRoy says. It’s advisable to look at the boat’s fuel capacity, as well as its rate of fuel consumption. When you put the two together, you can determine how far you’ll go on one tank and how much waterskiing you can enjoy before the next fill-up. That will provide a more accurate picture of how well the package will work for you. Consider service costs — and convenience Outboards and sterndrives require similar routine maintenance, including oil and fluid changes and tune-ups. Sterndrives, however, have more components that will need servicing: Bellows, shift cables, U joints and gimbal bearings, for example. “Those items are done in longer service intervals, but they add up over time,” LeRoy says. “A complete bellows job can run more than $1,200, depending on what’s needed, and is normally done every eight to 10 years.” In addition to researching maintenance costs, be sure to read each brand’s fine print regarding warranties and extended warranties. Confirm that you have a dealer or shop nearby that can service your boat and engine. “If you have to drive hours to find someone who has the specialty tools and training, that great deal you found might not be such a great deal,” LeRoy says. And finally, get out there! What's next? Go for a ride. “Engine packages do change the way the boats perform, [so] you definitely want to go for that test ride,” LeRoy says. “See how the boat handles.” Just remember, you don’t have your coolers, fishing gear or watersports equipment on-board yet. If the boat is slow to get on plane, doesn’t turn well, or feels sluggish, discuss different power packages with your dealer and test those as well. “Go to boat shows and to events that are put on by the dealers in your area,” LeRoy says. “The only way you’re going to see what’s out there is to take the time to look and have fun doing it.” Rest assured, no matter what type of engine you choose, you won’t be missing out. “There’s no clear advantage anymore,” Buelow says. “It all comes down to individual preferences and intended use.” And with engine manufacturers focused on providing complete prop-to-helm solutions, boaters will benefit from increased functionality and better experiences on the water. ★

NMEA 0183 The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) was founded by a group of electronics dealers at the New York Boat Show in 1957. The goal of that meeting was to discuss how to strengthen relationships with electronics manufacturers. Fast forward to 1983, the year NMEA introduced NMEA 0183, a voluntary industry standard to facilitate data communications between different marine electronics. NMEA 0183 is an ASCII, a serial communications protocol that defines how data is transmitted from one piece of gear or “talker” to one or more “listeners” at a time. While groundbreaking in 1983, it’s a pretty simple protocol compared to today’s standards, and it’s not without limitations. Data transmission rates are slower, and since it doesn’t allow for multiple “talkers,” it can’t be used to create networks. Despite these shortcomings, NMEA 0183 is still widely used and remains a perfectly acceptable way to integrate two sets of data, such as chartplotter GPS to a fixed-mount VHF for DSC capabilities. Even so, the newer NMEA 2000 has largely supplanted NMEA 0183, although many current devices can communicate using either protocol.

NMEA 2000 The current industry standard is NMEA 2000, a plugand-play networking system that allows quick and easy installation of new equipment. NMEA 2000 (N2K) uses a compact binary message format, rather than the ASCII serial communications protocol used by NMEA 0183. N2K also supports a disciplined multiple-talker, multiple-listener data network, which allows multiple units to simultaneously transmit and receive data through a single, standardized cable. Combined with multifunction displays, users can select and display any combination of data outputs (navigation and engine control systems, for example) at any position. The results are easier planning and installation of electronic

systems for boatbuilders during construction and owners installing aftermarket equipment. As all N2K-compliant gear can communicate with each other, boat owners can now purchase and install equipment based on options and functionality they like, rather than manufacturer compatibility with existing equipment. Not only can all N2K equipment communicate, they do it around 52 times faster than with NMEA 0183. How it works N2K is a bidirectional, multi-transmitter/multi-receiver instrument network that uses a single wire or “backbone” cable running the length of the vessel to interconnect electronic equipment. Sensors and displays are attached using a series of T-shaped connectors. A good analogy would be a power cable serving a string of homes along a rural highway; each home taps into that single cable, rather than having individual lines leading back to the power plant. All electronics plug into the backbone cable using a standardized waterproof connector and a section of “drop cable” (the length of which can be adjusted as required). Additional T-connectors can be added anywhere along the length of the backbone cable, simplifying future installations and expansion of the system. It’s also easier to remove damaged equipment for repair or to connect a laptop to the system for troubleshooting. Connections are made using CAN (controller area network) bus technology, the same system used in the automotive industry. CAN functionality is instantaneous. As the cable carries data, power and ground, power draw and installation hassles are reduced, thanks to universal cabling, color codes, connectors and plugs. With N2K, the end result is a robust installation infrastructure that is not only neater and more efficient, but also less costly to install, maintain and upgrade. What’s next: Bluetooth and wireless connectivity Bluetooth is a low-power, device-to-device wireless system that can be used to connect electronics within a limited range of each other, typically 30-40 feet. Wi-Fi can also be used for device connections, and additionally allows you to network multiple devices via a local or wide-area network

(LAN or WAN). Wi-Fi has a typical range of around 350 feet, although this can be increased with the use of booster antennas. Both Bluetooth and wireless systems transmit radio waves at the 2.4 GHz frequency; however, one key difference between the two is bandwidth (the amount of data bits able to be streamed per second): Bluetooth bandwidth is 800,000 bits per second, while Wi-Fi is capable of 11 million bits per second. Wi-Fi also makes internet access possible when connected to a suitable WAN; however, the use of the term Wi-Fi does not necessarily mean internet connectivity when describing connectivity between onboard marine electronics. Many manufacturers use basic Wi-Fi technology to connect various components of the electronic suites they offer (multifunction displays, for example). A major benefit here is the ability to connect a mobile device loaded with an appropriate app and easily create a remote secondary station.

So, while N2K has revolutionized data and power cable installations, does wireless technology mean cable itself is poised to go the way of 8-track tapes? Physical connectivity is safe for the moment; however, it’s a sure bet we’ll continue to see advancements in wireless technology that will start snipping the wires to more and more marine electronics. ★

Boat Show Bargains How to find the best deals on electronics at boat shows.

Deals from dealers At larger shows, many marine electronics manufacturers have their own booths displaying all they have to offer. This is a great forum for you to compare models, push buttons on demo units and to ask company representatives questions. The manufacturers typically offer some kind of incentive for purchasing through one of their dealers at the show. These incentives can be in the form of a money-off discount, a rebate, free accessories or add-on equipment. Always ask the manufacturer’s rep what offers are available. Most will have a list of their authorized dealers that are exhibiting at the show, and this will give you a good list of who to visit next at the show. Go to each of these dealers and shop for the best deal. Big box bargains Big box retailers and online catalog companies will also be exhibiting at these shows. Many of these retailers have made special purchases or negotiated special buy programs with certain manufacturers, resulting in great deals for the consumer. Equipment may be from a product line that’s being discontinued and sold at the show for record low show pricing. It may also be a new offering that will enable you to be among the first to have that particular product.

Other offers from these retailers may include free accessories, add-on equipment or rebates if purchased at the show. Some of these retailers may not have the product available for you to take home from the show but will offer to ship the product directly to you; the show discount can be so appealing that it offsets the shipping cost. Plus, this way you don’t have to carry the product around the show with you. New boat upgrades If you are in the market for a new boat and want to equip it with electronics, a boat show can be a great opportunity to get a deal. Dealers are hungry to move boats, and it's possible to negotiate an electronics package or upgrades to existing OEM equipment. Don’t just settle for what the dealer offers to include in your new boat package. Many times it’s possible to upgrade to equipment that’s on sale at the show. If upgrading through the dealer is not possible, negotiate to get a credit for electronics not used and see if you can supply the electronics that are discounted at the show. Be aware, however, that if you supply the electronics you are on the hook if there is a warranty issue. Try to get the dealer to supply it, and have it installed by either the dealer or a factory-authorized installer to maximize your warranty coverage. So put on a comfortable pair of shoes, grab your credit card, head to the show and be ready to get some of the latest electronics at great prices. Happy hunting! ★

Boat shows can be a gold mine for those looking for the latest and greatest electronics at reduced prices. The entry fee to a show can pay for itself many times over; apart from being a fun day looking at the best the marine industry has to offer, you may head home with a lot of knowledge, a bargain or two and money in your pocket. Boat shows are an opportunity for boat dealers, manufacturers, electronics dealers and installers, and big box retailers to show off their wares to a group of customers specifically interested in what they have to offer. For them to exhibit at a show, they have to invest a lot of money for that space. This is particularly true for the larger shows like Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Annapolis. Even smaller shows require a good investment, and as such, dealers want to sell enough product — be it boats or electronics — to help defray some of those costs. There are many ways for them to make this happen that also result in a better deal for you.

here are questions to ask when buying a new or used boat: What are the costs versus the value? Does the manufacturer have a reputation for quality, innovation, service and customer satisfaction? What is the boat’s history, including accident damage and repair or restoration? Is there water seepage, wood rot, missing equipment or hidden flaws? Is the boat sound and reliable? Perhaps the best information giving a buyer peace of mind may come from a marine surveyor’s inspection. Kinds of marine inspections Pre-purchasing surveys are the most comprehensive look at structural, electrical, propulsion and fuel systems; they also include items like machinery, navigation and onboard systems, overall appearance, an out-of-water inspection and a sea trial. Appraisal inspections determine the fair market value and may be used for estate purposes, donations and legal cases. Insurance surveys determine acceptable risk for obtaining insurance and financing. These surveys look at structural integrity, the boat’s designated use and fair market value. Damage inspections are requested by an insurance company or boat owner and assess the cause and extent of loss. Damage inspections provide recommendations for repairs, review estimates and determine pre-loss value. Finally, a customer may request a customized survey geared toward specific needs.
Why get an inspection? According to SAILMICHIGAN.ORG, “A professional marine inspection is warranted if you are considering purchasing a sailboat that contains an affixed motor, living quarters, or for use on the Great Lakes.” Greg G. Group at Great Lakes Marine Surveyors, Inc. (GREATLAKESMARINE.COM) says: “Late model recreational boats rarely experience catastrophic structural failures. What is encountered is a sometimes long list of deficiencies related to machinery or other systems, which can be very expensive to repair or correct. For example, a traditional sterndrive with water in it can cost $1,500–$2,000 to repair. If it’s a joystick-controlled pod-style drive, the cost can be five to 10 times that amount. Even routine replacement of cracked or perforated sterndrive bellows — which usually last between three and five years in normal use — can cost between $1,000 and $1,500 per drive.” “Newer vessels built in the last 10 years may have significant electronic controls,” Group continues. If the

engine repeatedly goes into a “partial shutdown mode," which keeps the boat from operating, a dealer technician is required. Group recommends looking at the service and warranty history, “Especially a very late model that seems attractively priced. If the record shows that the engine went into shutdown mode five times in the last 6 months, it’s probably not a boat you want to own.” Looking at older boats, Group says, “Rubber fuel feed, vent and fill hoses reach the end of their useful life when they're 20 years old.” The cost and labor on a 1998 model needing all the hoses replaced can be significant if the access is difficult. Who should perform an inspection? Invest in fully certified or accredited professionals with credentials that are accepted at financial institutions and insurance companies. Ask if they use ABYC, NFPA and USCG standards in their surveys. Check business website FAQs, and look for individuals that will come to you, even across state lines. What to expect A survey is dependent on the vessel size, equipment, systems being tested and the time involved; a detailed report and photographs accompany the findings. Once a surveyor is retained, you alone receive the information. Visual inspections may start with simple tools like a flashlight, telescoping mirror, pocket knife or awl, camera, or just by touching the hull. Additional testing may occur, including thermal imaging, computer diagnostics of engine and electronics systems, oil analysis, galvanic and stray current corrosion testing, ultrasonic testing and other diagnostics. The survey is not a guarantee; this is limited to the accessible area’s condition at the time of the inspection. Have all documentation ready and prepare the boat for inspection; surveyors will not dismantle or reinstall parts so hire qualified technicians as needed. Ask if you can be present during the survey, then ask questions and learn as much as possible about the boat. What is the cost? Survey cost is dependent upon the service rendered; detailed and sophisticated tests cost more. Surveys are thorough and cannot be rushed. Other charges may include telephone consultations. here are several definitions of the word “classic.” As an adjective, it means “judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality.” As a noun, classic means “a work of art of recognized and established value.” Regardless of the usage or tense, the word classic can be used for any models in the Marlow Yachts Explorer series, including the 58E. Beholden to the brand’s signature lines and style, the Marlow Explorer 58E is all Marlow. From the famous lapstrake style hull to the gently upturned bow stem and radiused transom, you don’t have to second guess when you see one. Having sea trialed several of David Marlow’s creations over the years, I do look a little deeper each time to see if he continues to build yachts of high quality and, well, to his own standards. I like to think I am keeping him honest.

And honest he is. During a recent visit to the Marlow Yachts Snead Island facility (near Bradenton, on Florida’s west coast), David Marlow was generous with his time and delved into some of the details that go into his yachts. For example, the lapstrake hull isn’t just for curb appeal. Each strake is cored and enveloped in resin-infused fiberglass, which reduces some weight and adds rigidity. Marlow explains that the lapstrake design works just like a car’s hood, with bends and ridges for firmness. The Explorer models use the same overall lines and notable features through the years, essentially making them timeless. Sure, there have been enhancements through the years, but as Marlow says, “Why change something that has been proven through time?” The 58E has been around a few years and was created after the successful 57E. The 58E offers a bit more space and beam, as well as an improved ride. If I know anything about David Marlow, I know that he likes his speed. Not that the 58E must be the fastest kid on the block. Au contraire! These are classy yachts — cruisers of oceans and lakes — but there is get-up-and-go power when needed. The 58E hits it at wide open at 28 knots, thanks to a pair of Caterpillar C12 1,000-hp diesel engines. That’s impressive for a 69,000-pound cruising palace. Pull back on the throttles to cruise at 9.65 knots (1,100 rpm), sipping just 10.6 gph combined for a range of 1,384 nm. Or step it up to 20.5 knots (1,900 rpm) burning 61.8 gph total with a range of 504 nm. Marlow’s focus is to tweak the five-blade Nibral props to maximize the output speed with maximum engine efficiency.

Don’t think the engine room gets any less consideration for quality or design. For us gearheads, it’s a work of art. Polished stainless engine beds, white gelcoat, and painted surfaces and engine blocks help to spot leaks while adding a pristine finish. Non-skid step points over the shafts allow full access and prevent injuries. Building in beefier components helps to minimize downtime. The 58E has five 3,700 gph bilge pumps, dual fuel/water separators, 3-inch foam insulation, flexible drive couplings and other systems. Utilizing a single thru-hull saltwater intake to a single sea chest minimizes hull openings. Usage of cupronickel piping, which is highly resistant to corrosion in seawater, is another example of how Marlow doesn’t take the easy or cheap way — he takes the best way.
Working it
The 58E’s layout makes cruising easy for an owner/operator program. Drawing only 4 feet, 10 inches, there’s no problem navigating the islands or gunkholing at a favorite anchorage. Marlow’s Veloci-Jet strut keels protect the shafts and props from things that go ding in the night. Full walkaround Burmese teak decks make line handling effortless. Side boarding gates and port/ starboard pantograph cabin doors help with overall access. From a comfort aspect, two large padded bench seats are forward of the Portuguese bridge, creating an inviting social area when inland cruising or catching a sunset. Aft is a large deck with bench seating across the transom, between the dual boarding gates and the
teak-inlaid swim platform. A hi-low teak table allows for alfresco dining, with plenty of room for chairs on the other side. Keep out of the rain underneath the fully extended flybridge deck that protects the aft deck; add side curtains to enclose the area. Wing doors allow access to side decks.
So fly
A curved staircase from the aft deck leads to the flybridge. Our test yacht had an open layout with an integrated radar arch/hardtop and beefy stanchions that keep it secured. Marlow can add side curtains (EZ2CY hard windows are a good choice), a semi-enclosed, molded forward windshield option (integrated into the hardtop) or a fully enclosed bridge. Pompanette helm and companion chairs are comfy and well suited for long-range cruising. The helm’s console is angular, so all plotters and displays face the helmsman. Dual Garmin multi-function displays, speed logs, autopilot, VHF, CAT engine monitor displays, rocker switches and more were installed, with plenty of space for additional electronics. Completing the flybridge deck is a starboard corner L-settee with a triangular, high-gloss teak table. To port is an entertainment station that can accommodate an electric grill, a sink with faucet, a counter and a fridge/ice unit.
Touch of class
Classic is also a choice word when describing the interior areas of the 58E. Two entrance doors take you from the aft deck into the salon.
One door swings outward, for everyday use. The second door rides in a channel and slides to port, creating a large opening between areas and blending the indoors with the outdoors. Inside, the salon is finished in satin teak wood, with teak and holly flooring, and teak and cherry wood blinds on the two large side windows. To port is a long L-shaped sectional sofa with storage, and another sofa is to starboard. Prefer a couple of swivel chairs on the port side instead? Just ask, as Marlow likes to deliver what the customer wants. The 58E doesn’t cut corners and utilizes Schwepper Beschlag interior hardware. Illumination comes from recessed soffit lighting, accent lighting beneath the sofa, wall sconces, lamps and overhead spot lights. For proper illumination, Marlow needed a center spot light in the ceiling, but also wanted an overhead grabrail to run the length of the salon. Not one to be defeated, he cleverly created the handrail to encircle the light, with both living in harmony. Add a touch of comfort with a wine storage locker, wetbar, icemaker and book shelves. Forward and up a few steps is the galley, dinette and pilothouse. For the cruising couple, the lower helm is essential when getting off/on the dock, or just to be out of the elements. All controls and monitors are within easy sight and reach at the helm and overhead console. Three large windshields with wipers offer great visibility. The U-shaped galley has what seems like an acre of honeycombed granite counter space, along with dual recessed stainless sinks, four
burner cooktops, an oven, a microwave and more. Pull-out fridge/freezer drawers negate the need for a full height fridge that could restrict visibility. Galley options and appliance placements can vary, so look at the 58E with an open mind. With the portside dinette table, cruising couples can be within proximity to just about everything they need. The dinette is in a convenient location to lay out a chart (remember those?). Teak woodwork, teak and holly flooring, and Marlow craftsmanship is carried through the yacht even into these working areas.

Rest easy
Stateroom access is via a staircase to starboard of the helm. There’s a forward VIP stateroom with a centerline queen berth, drawers beneath the berth, storage in the sole, a cedar-lined closet and double overhead hatches. An ensuite head has a shower stall, a toilet and is finished with teak cabinets and trim. A mid-ship stateroom has twin bunks, portholes, a locker and a TV. The full-beam master with a walkaround center berth is finished with teak cabinetry and ample lighting. Marlow knows what it takes for extended cruising and has built in numerous cabinets and drawers. The ensuite head runs along the port side and features a pedestal toilet, great counter space and a shower. top speed. The lack of steps make this boat very accessible. Formula managed to create a running surface that expands the bow entertainment zone — without compromising the aft swim platform — by adding a beefy Armstrong positive floatation bracket to secure the outboard engine package. The results are higher speeds, greater fuel economy and full use of the traditional swim platform. Trimming the engines up is also an advantage in shallow conditions.

When I arrived for the test ride, the 350-hp Verado trio purred like kittens, only I knew they were tigers luring me on-board with the promise of a rocket ship ride of nearly 60 mph. Formula redefines crossover boats with this new model, smartly combining three functions in one ultimate platform: An expanded bow, comfortable overnight capabilities below and a yacht-like cockpit that bears the prestige of Formula’s 60-year family pedigree. Just because a boat is fast doesn’t mean a wide-open throttle test is necessary. My days of carnival rides are over, and if I want my eyes to water, I’ll eat a jalapeño. Sure, it’s fun to throttle up and man the helm, but if your passengers’ knuckles match the white of the engine cowling, something is wrong. The 350 CBR is rock solid, and we ran in the high 50s on a fairly calm day with little boat traffic. Our best cruise was around 28 mph, translating into 1.2 mpg. Every seat — bow to stern — made me feel secure. I tried them all, easily moving throughout the flush-level cockpit while running at

One trend in aft/sunpad seating is the reversible, multi-position backrest. Formula’s version ever so gently extends over the woodgrain vinyl decking on the swim platform, where you’ll also find two upgraded JL Audio lighted cockpit speakers. Move the backrest further forward and behold a massive sunpad. Flip it back and the aft seat appears. All the plush seating is composed of DriFast foam and covered in weatherresistant Nautolex marine upholstery featuring PreFixx, an improved coating. PreFixx is easily maintained and offers superior stain resistance and improved wear properties that ensure your vinyl upholstery will look new far longer. This neat little package is all tied together — or shall we say sewn together — with Tenara element-resistant thread. A telescoping SureShade extends aft over the entire cockpit and retracts into the overhead sport hardtop, which includes recessed speakers and LED lighting. At least three couples can easily gather around a versatile table just an arm’s length away from the topside entertainment center, which features
a refrigerator/icemaker and sink combo. Beneath each seat is ample storage for towels, purses and whatever else you bring on-board. Seating combinations throughout the 350 CBR include a portside lounger across from the dual-position helm. All the vitals for monitoring your boat and course are at your fingertips, including a Raymarine eS78 GPS color chartplotter, a digital depth sounder and a Mercury SmartCraft Vessel View 7-inch engine display. Our test boat offered Mercury’s latest skyhook-enabled joystick control. This third-generation joystick has an improved feel and response, providing full 360-degree control regardless of wind or current in close quarters. Bow seating on this Formula shines thanks to a 10-foot, 9-inch beam. The extra foot is greatly appreciated for those of us who left our bikini bodies back at the dock 30 years ago. The space transforms into many configurations: Lounge seating, a full sunpad or seating around a color-coordinated removable table. A built-in cooler is located under the front seat, along with dry storage and cup holders recessed under both sides of the deck lip and grabrail.
STORAGE GALORE
Innovative construction allows Formula to include a compact yet fully functional cabin in this luxurious bowrider. Enter the cabin through a molded door that appears to be part of the helm and step down into a narrow companionway. This companionway leads to what resembles a mini galley, complete with a refrigerator, a microwave and a sink. An enclosed head and shower are off to one side, and a queen-size
Sensus memory foam mattress is tucked away behind the steps. Geometric magician engineers — undoubtedly Rubik’s Cube champions in design school — pieced together the layout that boasts a headroom of 6 feet, 2 inches. Just about every space on this boat has functional storage for sunpad cushions, wakeboards or fenders. A-ha the fenders. Formula has strategically placed fender clips along key areas of the hull. Insert the push button stainless plug secured to the fender line, adjust for height and you are all set. There’s no competition with cleat space, and docking is a breeze. There are many upgrades to consider, including a gas generator, an air conditioner, a flat-screen TV and a previously mentioned hardtop. One platinum option I’d recommend is the automatic outboard flushing system. After a long day of boating, the less maintenance required, the better. I want to enjoy a beverage with my guests back at the dock, not spend hours hooking up hoses and connecting one engine after another. While sterndrive models are available, space normally reserved for those engines creates a rather large mechanical room. Three AGM starting batteries, a low CO generator, hoses and hydraulics all are securely clamped to the stringer system. This will all save money during annual layup because mechanics can move about with ease. Whether you’re looking at big power for a yacht or a little motor for the dinghy, here’s what you can expect to see on the water this year from all the major marine engine manufacturers.
Evinèude
Evinrude has been on a tear ever since the company announced its second generation E-TEC G2 outboards in 2014. That lineup of V6 heavyweights expanded in 2016, taking Evinrude’s ultra-low emission technology down to the 150-hp class, and has now added joystick capability with the company’s innovative iDock system. Although joystick piloting has been around for years, what makes Evinrude’s system unique is that it leverages technology already built into the G2 engines so it doesn’t require any external pumps, fluid reservoirs or other pieces of equipment. That also allows for unusually clean and simple installations, making iDock an attractive option for boaters repowering their current ride. Because the system uses components already built into the engines, it’s also comparatively cheap at $5,999, which is about one-third the cost of other joystick systems. What’s particularly interesting is that iDock incorporates advanced aircraft gyroscope sensor technology to automatically compensate for wind and current. Its two-stage joystick is pressure sensitive, increasing power the farther it’s pushed: Sudden gusts of wind are easily dealt with by simply pushing a little farther on the stick. Evinrude’s iDock system is compatible with new Evinrude G2 150 HO, 200, 200 HO, 250 and 300 models. Unfortunately, it won’t retrofit to existing G2 engines. EVINRUDE .COM

Honda Marine has unveiled refreshed and updated versions of its popular BF75, BF90 and BF100 mid-range outboards for this coming season. The engines each sport Honda’s new “crouching form” design, along with a new tiller handle with a large shift lever, power tilt and trim, and trolling control. Other key features include Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC), programmed fuel injection, Honda’s Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST) system for improved hole shot and acceleration, and lean burn control to maximize power throughout the acceleration range. The new engines are each available with a 20-inch shaft, while the BF90 and BF100 models also offer a longer shaft of 25 inches. Honda also unveiled three new jet drive outboards for 2018. The all-new 40 Jet, 65 Jet and 105 Jet models have no gear case or propeller extending below the hull, allowing them to operate safely in extremely shallow or rocky environments. All three outboards include electric starting, multi-port programmed fuel injection and a freshwater flush port. MARINE .HONDA .COM
Mercury has captured a lot of attention in recent years with a slew of big, new engines, but the company hasn’t neglected boaters looking to power smaller craft or tenders. Both the all-new 15and 20-hp outboards feature battery-free electronic fuel injection for fast and reliable starting, instant throttle response and better overall performance. Best of all, the new engines weigh as little as 99 pounds, making them 11 pounds lighter than the models they replace and among the lightest in their class. To reduce maintenance requirements, both feature a no-drip, no-spill oil drain system, freshwater flushing attachment, water separating fuel filter and a convenient maintenance guide under the cowl. Along with the new portable outboards, Mercury also unveiled its new multi-function tiller handle, which mounts to the center of the engine rather than the traditional port side, optimizing it for either left- or right-hand control. Using hand tools, boaters can adjust the tiller arm’s horizontal angle by 18 degrees to port or starboard from center at 6-degree increments. The throttle grip rotation is also reversible to provide a more intuitive and comfortable boating experience, regardless of driving-hand preference. In big power, Mercury’s slick 6.7L diesel family has made its way through the supply chain and is showing up in new yachts. The new electronic, common-rail engine comes in 480-, 500- and 550-hp variants, each available as inboards or packaged with the Mercury Zeus pod drive. All three are fully compatible with Mercury’s suite of SmartCraft controls and electronics, including optional joystick piloting for both inboards and Zeus pods. MERCURYMARINE .COM

Suzuki calls its all-new DF350A “the ultimate outboard” and the company may very well be right. The largest V6 four-stroke outboard Suzuki has built to date, the 350-hp, 4.4L DF350A features a ton of high-tech engineering, ranging from a high-efficiency 12.0:1 compression ratio to contrarotating three-blade stainless propellers. While the contrarotating props have been used in inboard engines with pod drives for years, the DF350A represents their first appearance on a production outboard. Other key features include digital shift and throttle, Suzuki’s Lean Burn control technology and compatibility with SeaStar joystick controls. Like Suzuki’s other V6 outboards, the DF350A features an offset driveshaft, which allows for a more compact overall size and two-stage gear reduction. Yamaha enters 2018 with complete updates to its popular F90 and F75 midrange outboards. Lighter, faster and more powerful than their previous designs, they each use four-valve-per-cylinder, SOHC designs with new 1.8L engine blocks. Yet, in spite of larger power heads, the new engines weigh 13 pounds less than the outboards they replace. TCI Microcomputer Ignition monitors throttle position, engine speed and atmospheric conditions in order to precisely adjust ignition timing for optimum ignition performance and fuel economy. Both engines feature three-phase alternators that produce up to 35 amps of power to keep batteries at full charge; this is a 40 percent gain over the previous generation models. The F90 also features a 25-inch shaft option, which should be of interest to anglers trolling the Great Lakes on big multi-species fishing boats. Yamaha’s lightweight F25 was honored with an Innovation Award during the annual International Boatbuilders’ Exhibition and Conference (IBEX) in September 2017. Said to offer the best power-to-weight ratio of all 25-hp outboards, the F25 was lauded for its no-battery-required electronic fuel injection and an all-new two-cylinder powerhead with two valves per cylinder, making the new F25 the lightest engine in its class. Yanmar raised a few eyebrows in late 2017 when the company announced its new Dtorque 111 diesel outboard. Produced in partnership with German manufacturer Neander Shark, the Dtorque 111 is a compact, two-cylinder, 50-hp diesel outboard that’s “designed to revolutionize the small boat market with an expected lifespan of well over 10,000 hours,” according to the company. That’s said to be double the life of a comparable gasoline outboard. Editor’s Note: On September 6, 2017, I watched in
shock as the news broadcast images of Hurricane Irma’s path of destruction: Battered trees, flooded streets, overturned
boats, the roofs of homes ripped off. The damage took my breath away. Four months prior, my family and I had toured the brilliant islands of St. Martin, Anguilla and St. Barts
aboard a Moorings bareboat charter. Hurricane Irma was a true devastation to the beauty I had just visited. This feature serves as a testament to the beautiful landscapes, culture and people of these islands, as well as a reminder that these communities still need our help. With donations to hurricane relief efforts, it’s my hope that all those affected by the storm will be able to rebuild their lives and businesses. We hope this story can bring awareness to these beautiful islands that are very much worth saving, so that generations to come can enjoy these landscapes and cultures. Above all else, tourism remains the biggest contributor to the islands' economy, so it’s important to continue traveling to and exploring these wonderful islands. The Moorings plans to reopen its St. Martin base February 1, 2018.

The skies are slightly overcast and sounds of waves lapping against the northern embankment remind us that we’re not in the wintry Midwest anymore. “Good luck and have fun,” Pierre yells from the fuel dock. With two colorblind skippers at the helm, my dad and I attempt to spot the red and green buoys in the distance while exiting St. Martin's Oyster Pond. “I see one about 200 feet out,” my mom shouts, pointing in the distance at the Caribbean blue water. By relying on the shouts of my family and on the more trustworthy GPS, we clear the narrow entrance of Oyster Pond and point the 52-foot powercat north into 6-foot waves. Our introduction to the Leeward Islands is off to an exhilarating and memorable start.
Grand Case: The culinary capital
The Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles — a group of islands in the West Indies — stretch from Puerto Rico to Dominica. Our Moorings charter explored three of these spectacular islands: St. Martin, Anguilla and St. Barthelemy (St. Barts). These three diverse islands offer French,

British and Dutch culture, a range of cuisines and varying landscapes, from sandy white beaches to cacti-laden hillsides. “Here’s how you keep track of the three islands,” our charter briefing advisor says. “St. Martin has the cuisine, Anguilla has the quiet, and St. Barts has the rich and famous.” The Moorings charter briefing team at the Oyster Pond base is thorough, fully preparing you for your time out on the sometimes wind-tossed waters. Two years prior in the British Virgin Islands, my dad piloted this same Moorings 514PC model, so he felt fairly confident going in. We begin our first full day in St. Martin learning about the best routes around the islands, the weekly wind forecast and the most popular radio stations for French dance music. Our bareboat adventure begins on the French side of St. Martin. This island is split almost down the middle, with the Dutch claiming the southern territory while the northern part of the island belongs to the French. Rule of thumb: The spelling for this island will change depending on which side you’re on — Sint Marteen for Dutch and Saint-Martin for French — but for simplicity sake, I’ll refer to the island as St. Martin. After navigating out of Oyster Pond, we set our sights on the culinary hotspot of Grand Case, St. Martin. We find a protected anchorage just south of Roche Croele, a large rock and snorkeler's paradise that abuts the coast of Grand Case. We’re eager to dry off our salt-spray sunglasses, brush out our wind-swept hair and jump into the warm Caribbean water. But first, our crew has to put our anchoring lessons to the test. Unlike the BVI, where we moored with confidence every night, the Leeward Islands take a bit more finesse and craft. Anchoring adds to the spirit of adventure. While my dad drops the anchor, my brother and husband watch the rode plunge into the water. My brother raises his hand, indicating the anchor is dropped, and Royal holds successfully. Grand Case has a main street that’s lined with colorful buildings, charming boutiques, live steel drum music and every type of cuisine imaginable. We had provisioned the boat for breakfast and lunch the previous day at Le Grande Marche, a grocery store in Phillipsburg, but we save dinnertime for taste-testing Caribbean cuisine. Most restaurants have menus posted outside, so it’s fun browsing all the offerings in search of the perfect meal. Overwhelmed by the number of appetizing options to choose from, we take Pierre’s recommendation to dine at Le’Escapade. With the waves crashing against the beach, we clink our wine glasses on a successful first day, wait for our land-legs to return and enjoy fresh lobster, sea scallops and filet mignon. The 514PC comfortably accommodates all seven of us back on-board; we all get to stretch our legs in the spacious cabins while the waves rock us to sleep. Port Highlight: There’s great food everywhere you look. Skipper Tip: Winds can make for a choppy night at anchor. Try and find protection close to shore.
Onward to Anguilla
Advertised in the cruising guide as a paradise with powdery, white beaches and clear, blue water, the British territory of Anguilla is a 16-mile long island that oozes Caribbean hospitality. After a 16-mile cruise in sunny, cloudless conditions, we arrive at the calm, protected Road Bay and the sweet little town of Sandy Ground — a sleepy village by day that comes alive at night. After sleeping through

a rocky-rolly night, we learn our lesson and anchor closer to the shore between several local fishing boats. Since it's a British territory, we have to deal with customs for the first time — a process I admit I was anxious about while planning for the trip. My dad and I take the dinghy to shore, and within 15 minutes we’re in and out of the customs office. The welcoming customs officers inform us that they are also the town’s visitor's bureau and travel guides. They offer us restaurant recommendations, including the world-famous fish and chips at Roy’s Bayside Grill just down the beach. We happily take the travel guides up on their advice. I dine on Creole Mahi Mahi with sweet potato fries and fresh vegetables, while my dad opts for the famous fish and chips. My brother enjoys “the best French onion soup” he’s ever had, which is a bold statement coming from him. Back on Royal’s flybridge, I’m treated to a private reggae concert as music from Dad’s Beach Bar echoes around the bay. In the morning, we decide that Anguilla is worth another night’s stay and purchase a $140 national marine parks pass from the Customs Office, allowing us to travel to the nearby and not-to-be-missed islands off the coast of Anguilla. But first: We hear that the hike up the North Hill is well worth the effort. I get my hiking shoes on (by that I mean flip-flops) and dinghy over to shore where we’re greeted by the unofficial island tour guide, Lucky, a friendly Labrador retriever. We were confused by the cruising guide’s directions but Lucky instinctively knows where we’re going and leads us in the right direction. Low and behold, within five minutes of zigzagging around The Pumphouse, the famous Elvis’ Beach Bar and the Road Salt Pond, we’re at the base of the trail. A quick but steep 30-minute hike leads us to a bird’s eye view of Road Bay and Royal anchored down below. Next on the agenda is touring the national marine parks. We lift anchor and head due north. Just off the coast of Road Bay, we quickly bypass Sandy Island as we notice the only mooring ball is detached, drifting away from shore. Instead, we anchor off the coast of Prickly Pear Cays, 6.5 miles from Road Bay. This once-flourishing reef is now home to some fascinating rock formations and coral. The only structure we can see for miles is a small bar on the shore, and I’m fairly certain we are the only humans on the entire island. Continuing our national park road trip, we pack up and head toward Little Bay just north of Crocus Bay. This sublime park — with towering cliffs rising 70-plus feet into the air — offers impressive snorkeling. Once again, we feel like the only ones on a private island as we soak up the sun in the alcoved beach, explore the caves and jump off rocks. To cap the night, we make reservations at Dolce Vita (recommendations are highly suggested as they fill up fast), a highly-rated Italian restaurant on Road Bay that’s known for its homemade, made-fresh-daily gnocchi. I opt for the lobster pasta, which I enjoy against the backdrop of a vibrant sunset. My brother found this setting so romantic that he decides it’s the perfect spot to propose to his girlfriend (now wife). We celebrate at Dad’s Beach Bar, dancing along with the live band and sipping Caribbean cocktails. Port Highlight: Hike up to North Hill with unmatched views, dreamy, white beaches and spectacular national marine parks. Skipper Tip: Holding is good and winds are usually calm. Stay out of the shipping channel and close to shore for more protection. Holding can be iffy at Prickly Pear Cays, so you may want to wait a while before heading to shore (just to be sure).

The capital of Marigot
Although our time in Anguilla was a dream, we lift anchor and head 13 miles south to St. Martin’s French capital of Marigot. Emitting a French Riviera vibe, this port is bustling with boutiques, sidewalk bistros and plenty of history. The bay is a bit rolly, but the bright blue water beckons us to stay. We head to shore where we breeze through customs; the customs officers are extremely friendly and show us how to do customs online if we decide to return during our trip. The historic Fort Louis is towering and enticing; my husband and I heed the call and begin our ascent up the stairway to the fort. Built in 1789, Fort Louis was designed to defend a warehouse of salt, coffee, sugar cane and rum. The fort was later abandoned, and today you can find fort walls, a few remaining cannons, and an unbeatable bird’s eye view of Marigot Bay and Simpson Lagoon. For dinner, we sit down for a meal at Yacht Club and dine on a heavenly four cheese pizza and Mahi ceviche. We have the streets to ourselves as we leisurely stroll back to the dinghy dock and spend the rest of the night relaxing on Royal’s flybridge against the glow of the city. Port Highlight: Hike up to Fort Louis, which overlooks the crystal clear bay. Skipper Tip: The bay can be busy but is fairly calm and holding is good. St. Barts: Lifestyles of the rich and famous
As the sun breaks through the clouds in the morning, we refuel for the first time at the Marina Fort-Louis. It’s an easy squeeze into the wide, semi-circular marina, but we try to avoid getting too close to the megayachts gracing the docks. Exceeding our expectations, we swing right into place on the first try. My dad fills up the water tanks (we had only used one and still have one plus the reservoir left) and the gas tank (we have about half a tank). We could probably get away without refueling but better safe than sorry. The wind picks up to about 15 knots and the waves swell as we wave goodbye to Marigot and head 23 miles toward our next destination: The French territory of St. Barts. Legend has it that St. Barts inspired Jimmy Buffett to write the hit song “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” You can get your very own cheeseburger at the famous Le Select. This island is pictured in the dictionary next to the word “ritzy.” Megayachts line the harbor, celebrities visit the beaches and stores like Dolce & Gabbana and Hermès are found all in one block. Yet, as we make our way to our anchorage at the national park of Anse de Colombier, we are greeted by a much more tranquil, untouched landscape. Rocky cliffs surround the striking blue water, and mountain goats and cacti dot the hillside. A grand home once belonging to the Rockefellers serves as the only sign of civilization. Once again searching for the highest peak, my husband and I scale the rocky hill. We almost reach the top of the hill — I am so far up that I can see St. Martin in the distance — when my fear of heights kicks in and I have to descend back to the water. Back on-board, my brother seasons fresh peppers in the galley while his new fiance cooks salmon up on the flybridge grill.
This night turns out to be one to remember. I awake from my slumber and peek out the cabin porthole, only to realize that we’re a mere foot from the sailboat anchored next to us (now almost on top of us). The strong winds passing over the hill have created a vortex; each boat was pointing a different direction. We are now stern-to-stern with our neighbor, and in a moment of panic, my dad throws a stern anchor and adds fenders just in case the winds change their minds once again. Despite all the night’s excitement, the stars on this pitch-black night are otherworldly. In the morning, we set our sights on living like the rich and the famous for the day and head toward St. Barts' capital of Gustavia. Think brick roads, palm trees, megayachts and expensive jewelry catching the sun’s rays. We anchor in front of The Saintes, just west of Fort Oscar; these protruding rocks offer a spectacular backdrop when the sun sets. The heat is almost unbearable, so as soon as I see a sign for “beach,” I mindlessly start walking toward it. After a short 10-minute walk, we end up at Shell Beach, which is exactly as it sounds, made up of millions of tiny shells. Following a quick cool-down swim, we spend the rest of the day hiking to the top of Fort Gustav, strolling the cobbled streets, searching for the famous fish market, and ending our day sipping drinks at the famous Le Select. This city is pure class; it doesn’t give the vibes of a tourist trap, but instead offers a rather authentic French/Caribbean experience. History oozes from the 19th century buildings that pay homage to its Swedish, British and French heritage. The next day — our last full day of the charter — we complete the final item on our Gustavia bucket list: Get an authentic French crepe. After, we head back to Colombier to soak in the seclusion, snorkel and take a much-needed nap. This time around, we grab a mooring on the north side of the bay, which seems to provide better protection from the wind. As we head back to base on our final day, we recap our trip: What was our favorite port; what was the best meal; where are we dying to return? My brother’s favorite port is Anguilla, as that’s where he proposed. My husband’s favorite adventure was the hike up Anse de Colombier. My dad’s favorite meal is the fish and chips at Roy’s in Road Bay. My personal favorite port is Marigot. Our unanimous consensus: We learned a lot more about boating in the Caribbean (refueling, anchoring, etc.) that gave us more confidence out on the water; we were reminded that Caribbean weather forecasts cannot be trusted (we were told it would rain every day and it only rained once); we discovered that customs may seem intimidating but is a pretty straightforward process; and we confirmed the fact that time spent on the water is the best way to connect as a family. Port Highlight: Amazing hikes at Anse de Colombier and Gustavia, and the night skies are unmatched. Shell Beach offers the clearest blue water I’ve ever seen. Skipper Tip: Anse de Colombier: Moorings can be used as night anchorage. These appeared to provide better protection from swinging. Do not anchor too close to other boats, as wind might swing boats in all different directions. Add a stern anchor if you need to. Gustavia: North of fort provides some protection but can be busy. This spot is a short dinghy ride into town.

It’s all thanks to Detroit’s strategic location in the Great Lakes region, Batt says, citing easy access to Lake St. Clair, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and, eventually, the St. Lawrence Seaway. From Belle Isle, “Lake Huron is about a 2½-hour cruise, and it’s just 45 minutes to Lake Erie,” Batt says. Lake St. Clair’s Nautical Mile is also just 20 minutes by boat. The pace of development in and around downtown Detroit is dizzying, marked by the September 2017 opening of The District Detroit, a multi-billion dollar sports and entertainment complex that brings all four of the city’s professional sports teams within blocks of one another. The long-awaited QLine streetcar system now connects 3.3 miles of Woodward Ave. from downtown through Midtown and the New Center. For boaters and others without cars, QLine offers convenient access to top city attractions: Among them is the Detroit Institute of Arts and its Diego Rivera murals; hand-assembled watches, leather goods and bicycles at Shinola; hand-pressed vinyl records at Jack White’s Third Man Records; and vintage apparel at the new Peacock Room in the Fisher Building. Detroit’s dining scene, meanwhile, has exploded with new restaurants, bars and breweries, thanks to an influx of Millennials, artists and entrepreneurs drawn to the city by affordable housing and tech jobs. Pedestrians, including suburbanites, are out and about day and night — something not seen downtown for decades.

Yes, it’s a great time to steer your boat to Detroit. But if you visit during popular river events — the June 25 Ford Fireworks and the Gold Cup hydroplane races August 24-26 — it’s not too soon to reserve space at a local marina. There are plenty of places for visitors to dock, dine and explore the city, including the venerable Detroit Yacht Club on a manmade island off Belle Isle, several marinas on the Detroit River near downtown and other marinas farther upriver on Lake St.

ay Batt has a vivid memory of the summer day 10 years ago when he took a dozen business associates from across the country on a cruise of the Detroit River aboard his 42-foot Meridian, The Batt Cave. From the upper helm on the bridge, bound for Lake St. Clair, he felt great pride as his colleagues raved about the unexpected beauty of Detroit and its riverfront. The water — clean and clear — dazzled in shades of Caribbean blue-green with the gleaming Renaissance Center skyscraper, Ambassador Bridge and Belle Isle as a backdrop. The idyllic scene, he says, was a far cry from his guests’ preconceptions of Detroit as a down-and-out Rust Belt city. “They began remarking as soon as we pulled out of the harbor,” says Batt, commodore of the Detroit Yacht Club, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. “They were blown away at the beautiful color of the water, the proximity to Canada and the beauty of the city as seen from the water. It was also a reminder to me of how special it is to be able to boat here.” Detroit and its waterfront, settled by the French more than three centuries ago, have only gotten better. After decades of urban decay and economic decline, including a 2013-14 bankruptcy, Michigan’s largest metropolis is now gaining momentum as the nation’s great “comeback city.” Last year, Detroit landed on the New York Times' annual list of “52 Places to Go in 2017,” among destinations such as Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Detroit also ranked No. 2 in guidebook publisher Lonely Planet’s top 10 cities to visit in 2018, behind Seville, Spain. Once an important port for fur trading and ship building, Detroit remains one of the world’s busiest commercial waterways. With Michigan ranked third nationally in registered recreational boaters, it’s also a mecca for pleasure boaters. In season, you’ll see everything from kayaks, powerboats and sailboats to 1,000-foot lake freighters and ocean-going vessels, nicknamed “salties.”

Clair’s Nautical Mile. What’s more, Windsor, Ontario ports are just across the Detroit River. With 35 transient slips and 16 seasonal, William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor — Michigan’s first urban state park — is the marina closest to downtown attractions. Located just east of the RenCen, General Motors’ headquarters, the marina is on the 4-mile long RiverWalk, which is the heart of Detroit’s waterfront revival. Buzzing with walkers, cyclists and skateboarders, the promenade stretches from the Ambassador Bridge almost‚ but not quite, to the MacArthur Bridge at Belle Isle, the city’s island oasis in the Detroit River. Highlights of the RiverWalk include a carousel, the Chene Park amphitheater (boaters can listen to concerts for free from the water), and Hart Plaza, a site for outdoor fitness programs and music events such as the annual Memorial Day electronic Movement Festival and Labor Day Jazz Fest. There’s even a guided dog-walking group on Sunday mornings. Kid-activated water cannons and a schooner-themed water feature at Mt. Elliott Park & Pavilion are among the newest additions to the RiverWalk. Near the Port Authority, there’s a shipping container turned museum with an interactive computer system that tracks Great Lakes vessels in real time. Boaters needing exercise may rent a bike from Detroit Wheelhouse on the RiverWalk or join an organized bike tour. Another two-wheel option is MOGO Detroit, a new bike-sharing program with 43 stations across 10 neighborhoods. A popular destination via the paved 2-mile Dequindre Cut greenway is the historic Eastern Market, which has been around for more than 150 years and has been born again with colorful murals and special events. While Tuesdays (in the summer) and Saturdays (year-round) are the best days for fresh produce and flowers, a number of shops and restaurants in the Eastern Market now stay open most days. DeVries & Co., a gourmet grocer dating back to 1887, is a great place to
load up on cheese and other provisions. Vivio’s makes a mean bloody mary, Supino Pizzeria serves a nice slice and Bert’s Marketplace is a late-night club known for jazz and barbecue. Newer additions are Eastern Market Brewing Co., Detroit City Distillery and two restaurants, Gather and Antietam. Joining the Detroit beer scene, Founders Brewing Co. opened its first taproom outside of Grand Rapids in the Midtown district. Founders' opening marks Detroit’s 10th brewery taproom, up from three in 2013. Within walking or biking distance of Milliken Harbor and other marinas east of downtown is a warehousestyle district that’s home to the original Atwater Brewery, offering German-style craft brews and a new rooftop deck. Nearby, Andrew’s on the Corner is a classic Detroit bar celebrating its 100th anniversary. Campus Martius, downtown Detroit’s focal point, is within easy walking and biking range of the RiverWalk. It’s a people-watching park with a man-made sandy beach where you can grab a snack from a food truck. Or, sample a Detroitfavorite hot dog at the Lafayette or American Coney Islands nearby. For fancy drinks and fare, check out the Apparatus Room in the Detroit Foundation Hotel, the city’s hot new digs in the former Detroit Fire Department headquarters. Designers kept the building’s original red arched firehouse doors but added striking details, such as the circular bar with cascading glass lights. A cheap way to get around downtown is the elevated PeopleMover train, a 2.9-mile loop that offers a scenic view of the city. Among the 13 stops is Greektown, a lively district that has drawn visitors even in Detroit’s quietest times. Greektown is home to restaurants, Astoria Pastry Shop and Greektown Casino. Detroit’s other two casinos, Motor City and MGM Grand, are best reached by cab, Lyft or Uber. For non-gamblers, the new Topgolf Swing Suite offers a fun golf-simulation experience at the MGM Grand. A trip to Detroit wouldn’t be complete

Nautical Mile in nearby Lake St. Clair
Back on the Detroit River, Belle Isle, with 7 miles of shoreline, has undergone a $32-millon transformation since becoming a Michigan State Park in 2014. Improvements include a new kayak launch, 24-hour security, upgraded pavilions and street lights, and an accessible kiddie playscape. The 982-acre island, initially designed by Frederick Law Olmsted of NYC Central Park fame, is a great place to ride bikes. With its landmark 85-foot dome, the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory showcases a 600-plant orchid grotto, a koi pond and gardens. Another favorite is the historic Albert Kahn-designed Belle Isle Aquarium. Under an arched ceiling lined with green opalite glass tiles, visitors can ogle a new Great Lakes sturgeon exhibit and collections including air-breathing fish, South American piranhas and North America’s seven species of gar. Of interest to boaters, Belle Isle’s Dossin Great Lakes Museum features marine history exhibits including the Edmund Fitzgerald’s anchor. William Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse on the north end facing Lake St. Clair is the nation’s only marble lighthouse.

Designed in a Mediterranean style by architect George D. Mason, who also created Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel, the Detroit Yacht Club (DYC) is among the world’s largest yacht clubs. It has a restaurant, two pools and a full activity schedule, including free sunset concerts on summer Saturdays. Past members include Horace Dodge, Edsel Ford and racing legend Gar Wood, a former Commodore.

About three dozen of the DYC’s 360-plus wells are available to membersponsored boaters or members of reciprocal clubs more than 50 miles from Detroit in the Intra-Lake Yachting Association (ILYA). According to Batt: “Space is not a problem. We make a habit of finding space for affiliated members interested in visiting for the night or weekend.” In addition to its prime Riverwalk location, 31-acre Milliken State Park offers fishing platforms, picnic tables, a wetlands demonstration project and a lighthouse at the harbor entrance. Four miles east of downtown on the Detroit River, Kean’s Marina is a full-service “resort marina” with a tiki bar, music and pool, says co-owner Mike Litt: “We’re like a concierge service here in the office — whatever people need, we’ll point them in the right direction.” About 20 of the marina’s 340 slips are open to transient sailboats and powerboats, Litt says. He adds that it’s a popular destination for boat clubs from downriver Detroit, Toledo and elsewhere. Kean’s Marina is next to Sindbad’s, a nautically-themed restaurant and marina on the site of a Prohibition-era speakeasy. Known for its homemade clam chowder, fish sandwiches and Sunday brunch, it offers free dockage for diners and rents overnight slips for bigger boats. Sindbad’s also provides shuttle service to major Detroit sporting events. Nearby, the city-run Erma Henderson Marina reserves six of 243 slips for transients, and the 174-slip Riverside Marina offers four for transients. The Nautical Mile in nearby St. Clair Shores — 11 miles by car from downtown — offers unique shops, restaurants and marinas, including Jefferson Beach Marina. “Detroit grew up along the river and along Lake St. Clair — it’s our front-door playground,” says Joel Stone, senior curator at the Detroit Historical Society. “People around here like playing on the water, even if it’s just going down to Belle Isle and watching the boats go by.” And there’s no better time than now to join them. ★

without visiting the Motown Museum, also called Hitsville U.S.A. The modest home-turned-studio is where Berry Gordy launched the Motown sound in 1959. I
f you’ve spent any time in the boating world, chances are you’ve heard of SkipperBud’s. Despite humble beginnings, today the Winthrop Harbor, Illinois-based, family-run business has locations throughout the Great Lakes region, including in Milwaukee, Sturgeon Bay, Grand Haven, Bay City and Marblehead. The marine dealer has not only grown geographically over the years, but also in what it provides for boaters. “We’ve developed to be a one-stop shop,” says owner Mike Pretasky Jr. “We want to be everything [for boaters] and to do it well.” SkipperBud’s was founded in 1959 and is today one of the region’s most well-known sales, brokerage, service and marina groups. Consider this: Pretasky Jr. says in total — with indoor, outdoor, heated and cold storage options — SkipperBud’s stores about 5,000–6,000 boats each year. With all these boats, the service department keeps busy during the winter months, especially since SkipperBud’s offers just about any service a boater could need; the list is endless, including engine and canvas repair, detailing services, fiberglass

and painting capabilities, hydraulic lift and underwater light installation, teak deck cleaning and more. Pretasky Jr. says the service team runs through a 30- to 40-point checklist and will make service recommendations for boaters to ensure everything runs smoothly come spring. Due to a high volume of requests, Pretasky recommends letting the team know about desired work sooner rather than later. “Once we get past February 15, we can’t accept any more work,” he says. SkipperBud’s employees can also be found traveling around to the bigger boat shows held during the winter. Pretasky Jr. says the sales team takes advantage of the winter months by going into “training mode” for the new model year. With an inventory that includes a number of big-name brands — like Yamaha, Scarab, Bayliner, Tiara, Harris and Sea Ray, to name just a few — this task might be easier said than done. Although the company is used to dealing with many larger yachts, Pretasky Jr. wants boaters to know that everyone is welcome at SkipperBud’s, whether you’re looking for a pre-owned aluminum fishing boat or a new luxury yacht. ★

he pristine 24-acre pocket of land just north of White Lake on Michigan’s west coast sat undeveloped for years — no one could figure out how to construct a home on the critical dunes, which are strictly protected by the Department of Environmental Quality. That is until homeowner Gaylen Byker came along and got a little creative. With the help of an architect, Byker was able to build around the delicate lakefront landscape, erecting three narrow “pods” entirely clad in copper, stone and glass and connected by a 6,000-square-foot Brazilian ipe wood deck. The materials blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings. Inside, the use of black walnut wood floors and Douglas fir trim provide a “warm contemporary” style, or as Byker calls it, “a marriage of contemporary and comfortable.” “What grabs you right away is how much glass and visibility there is inside,” Byker says. “You’re right in nature; you have privacy but you also have the ability to entertain large groups.” Since it was impossible to lay a driveway on the dunes, Byker's architect suggested a quarter-mile, 6-foot-wide pathway from the carriage house to the main home that can

hold 10,000 pounds. The path— which can support an electric car or golf cart — winds through the thick Michigan forest, crosses over a ravine and sandy dunes, and bursts out to the stunning home overlooking Lake Michigan. The home’s three pods maximize every square-inch possible. A Wisconsin limestone fireplace, fully-automated blinds, chef ’s kitchen and soaring 14-foot ceilings are found in the main home. Hit the treadmill or sip a glass of Merlot in the main home's basement, which features a sauna, full gym and 750-bottle wine grotto. Connected via the deck or an underground walkway, the north pod offers a nice retreat for guests with a full kitchen, bedrooms and privacy.The south pod also serves as a guest home, providing extra space for entertaining. Relish in Lake Michigan views on the sprawling deck while grilling dinner in the full outdoor kitchen. Swim laps in the large resistance pool or head down to the 576-foot private, sandy beach. This is the epitome of luxury waterfront living. “If you want a unique home with easy access to boating on Lake Michigan, it would be pretty hard to beat this,” Byker says. ★

Mare El III is our 26-foot Streblow Custom V-Drive powered by a 425-hp Crusader 502. Randy Streblow and Steve Horton commissioned her in 1998 and delivered her in September 2000. We knew of the high quality associated with Streblow Custom Boats as this was our third Streblow. Many pieces that will never be seen on the interior were painstakingly painted or varnished to preserve the wood. There were many “firsts” in this 26-footer, including a padded cuddy cabin, Tiffany rose vases, removable storage compartments and a custom nautical compass for our many Lake Michigan trips with Randy. During the entire process, our family became best friends with Randy and we made many trips together in the Streblow. He passed away a few years back. Rest in peace master boatbuilder.
