Inspired interiors crafted with pride.

A

Marlow Explorer® interior is the perfect blending of old world craftsmanship with space age materials to create an environment that is inspirational and distinct to Marlow.

In an effort to preserve our valuable teak forests throughout the world each Explorer interior is crafted from a single teak log. This ensures that the grain is all cross-matched and each yacht is consistent in appearance. Taking a note from the aviation industry, the use of honey-combed core material saves weight and provides a strong and durable base for many of our surfaces which don’t require solid wood or stone fabrication. A simple drawer tells the story of the pride our craftsmen take in their efforts; dovetail joints, a solid wood bottom and not a single razor blades width seam visible anywhere. Next, examine the finish in either gloss or matte, perfectly applied and sanded to a glass smooth surface on the wood. In a word… Perfect. Visit us at www.marlowyachts.com to learn more.

Marlow Explorer® yachts are the envy of the yachting world.

What’s your favorite part of summer?

Sweet Summertime

T

he first time I tried waterskiing, my entire family spotted from the back of our small bowrider simultaneously cheering me on but also joking about seeing musky or snapping turtles swimming beneath me. I love my family, but that probably wasn’t the most productive way to learn how to waterski. Lucky for you, barefoot waterski champion and coach Zenon Bilas has laid out the basics of teaching kids how to waterski and wakeboard (p. 48). Watersports are a great way to get kids involved in boating, so read these helpful tips and then ride the wake. Just in time for cruising season, this issue is jam-packed with wonderful Great Lakes destinations, starting with Door County, Wisconsin’s beloved village of Sister Bay (p. 26). Enjoy the relaxing waterfront while taste-testing local fare. Just across Lake Michigan is Pentwater, Michigan, a welcoming beach town with sandy beaches, art galleries, summer events and more (p. 58)! And if you’re a wine connoisseur, head up the Michigan coast to Old Mission Peninsula, where you’ll find several wineries that are well worth the stop (p. 50). We want to see your summer snapshots! Tag us in your Instagram and Facebook photos using @lakelandboating. See you on the water!

Do you have a story idea you’d like to suggest? Email me at kbush@lakelandboating.com to share your ideas.

Marty Richardson Are you kidding? BOATING! I measure the pleasure of the day by how many boat rides I get in. From my 52-foot trawler to my 14-foot aluminum fishing boat with a 20-horse to my two-seat paddleboat, it all counts toward a summer well-spent and a life well-lived.

Old Mission Peninsula, MI p. 50 Pentwater, MI p. 58

Terry Phipps The best part of summer is the last half. The light is better, the nights are cooler, the days are temperate, the water is warmer and the days are shorter; perfect.

Burger Boat Company christened its newest project, the 48 Cruiser, in June at its Manitowoc, Wisconsin headquarters. “On behalf of the entire team at Burger, we are thrilled to christen this beautiful yacht for her owner,” says Jim Ruffolo, president of Burger Boat Company. “This Burger 48 Cruiser is an exciting addition to the Burger family and has allowed her owner the joy of creating a new, custom yacht. It also provides the opportunity for others to acquire a custom alternative to production boats, one that allows an owner to take the helm of their very own creation.” The Burger 48 Cruiser is a custom-built 48-foot aluminum cruiser that features two ensuite staterooms, unobstructed views in the open salon/galley area and exceptional exterior spaces for entertaining friends and family. Burger is also currently building a second 48 Cruiser, Project 512, featuring an interior design by De Basto Designs of Miami, Florida. This 48 Cruiser is available for purchase. Former New York Tour Boat Headed to Lake Michigan

MUST-HAVE

A classic canal tour boat is coming to Lake Michigan. The Emita II, which previously cruised the Erie Canal in Central New York, has been purchased by Harbor County Adventures in New Buffalo, Michigan.

The 100-passenger, 65-foot vessel was owned by Mid-Lakes Navigation in Skaneateles, New York since 1974, when she was purchased from Casco Bay Lines in Portland, Maine. Sailing along Lake Erie, the Emita II took over daily sightseeing and dinner cruises from her sister ship, the City of Syracuse, in 2005. The owner of Harbor County Adventures, Victor Tieri, announced the boat will keep its name and will take riders out onto Lake Michigan via the “Classic Lake Tour.” For more information, visit

Sister Bay, WI Door County village centered around the water.

C

Carved out of the wild The first settlers arrived in the Sister Bay area in 1857. Naming the community “Big Sister Bay” after the rocky Sister Islands that flank the large, deep-water harbor, these Scandinavian lumbermen carved trails and roads out of the wilderness and made a hardscrabble living through logging, fishing and farming. These settlers relied heavily on the harbor. In the 19th century, North Woods overland travel was a substantial challenge on a good day; boats simply were the most reliable resource for transporting both passengers and freight. With the lake as a lifeline, area businesses boomed. Soon, pleasure-seekers from Milwaukee and Chicago started arriving aboard elegant passenger steamers to enjoy “cooler near the lake” holidays in Victorian-era hotels. Sister Bay also welcomed excursionists from Marinette and Menominee, who would cross Green Bay for a day of fun and relaxation. In 1912, the community petitioned for its right to become an incorporated village independent of the Township of Liberty Grove; local historians believe the decision had much to do with Liberty Grove neglecting village needs while seeking to raise taxes and prohibit alcohol. Sister Bay achieved its goal, but it was a hard year for the village, with devastating drought, locusts and fire. But the villagers rebuilt and adapted to changing times. Many of today’s residents are the third- and fourthgeneration descendants of those families, and they preserve and share the Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Finnish influences — as well as the vision and fortitude — of their forebears. A waterfront to remember If you haven’t been to this little corner of Northern Door in a number of years, you might not recognize the Sister Bay waterfront. In 2007, the village purchased the Helms Four Seasons motel property; three years later, it was able to purchase Al Johnson’s Boutique. Together, these purchases allowed the village to expand the Sister Bay Municipal

Marina and connect it to Waterfront Park, creating more than 1,900 consecutive feet of public waterfront. In short, Sister Bay now has Door County’s largest waterfront park and beach. “It’s the best waterfront in Door County,” says Mark Matson, who handles sales and customer relationships for Beacon Marine. When he joined the company (then Cal Marine) in 2013, Matson and his family left their home in Rockford, Illinois, and moved to Sister Bay. “I love it,” Matson says. “We have new restaurants, fun retail, a seasonal bandshell… it’s so special here.” At the Sister Bay Municipal Marina, visiting boaters will find 40 transient slips and 100 seasonal slips that can accommodate vessels up to 80 feet with up to a 7-foot draft. The marina features 30- and 50-amp electrical service, water hookups, restrooms, showers and Wi-Fi. You also may dock at the nearby Yacht Works Inc. boatyard and marina, which has 72 slips, a 90-foot fuel dock with gas and diesel, a ship’s chandlery and a full service department. The company also sells Cranchi, Everglades and Regulator. “We have a few transient slips so we do try to accommodate boaters who want to go downtown; [we will] give them a lift or pick them up,” says Yacht Works Inc. Co-owner Deb Duren. “We also have a good working relationship with the Sister Bay Marina and do our best to help boaters get parts and service if they need.” If you’re interested in boat sales and would like to see more, Matson’s team at Beacon Marine represents Boston Whaler, Cobalt and Grady-White. Together, these marine facilities have made Sister Bay the northern counterpart to Sturgeon Bay when it comes to serving the boating community. For cruisers, the best part is that you can tie up your boat and not have to worry about transportation — so much is within easy reach.

hange is inevitable, even in our most beloved cruising destinations. It can be bittersweet to see these places evolve — at least at first — because we worry that their incarnations won’t match what we hold so dear in our memories. Sometimes, however, evolution brings unexpected, delightful surprises. Look no further than Sister Bay, Wisconsin, where a Door County community of not quite 900 people has redefined and transformed itself in a way that would make its previous generations proud.

Best small town for dining More than 10 restaurants are within walking distance of the marina. You can savor a world-class steak at CHOP; enjoy views of the marina, beach and sunset from the second-floor seating area at Boathouse on the Bay (formerly the Inn at Kristofer’s); immerse yourself in the European vibe at Bier Zot; and dine in a former church at LURE. “I also recommend the Wild Tomato, which opened its second location here a couple years ago,” Matson says. “I’m from Chicago, and although it’s risky to say this, I think Wild Tomato has even better pizza!” No wonder Sister Bay earned a “Best Wisconsin Small Town for Dining” award. The village’s award-winning establishments have been featured in Bon Appetit, Good Housekeeping, Gourmet and Midwest Living, and they’ve appeared on the Food Network. It’s not all new, however; those returning to Sister Bay will be happy to find many of their old favorites. Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik, which opened in 1973, is still serving Swedish pancakes — and tourists still flock to see the famous goats on the roof. But this Sister Bay staple also has something new to offer: The Stabbur Scandinavian Beer Garden, which might be Door County’s most unique outdoor bar. It has a changing roster of 20 draft beers, specialty cocktails, multiple TVs and lots of family fun. “Oh my goodness, they have it all,” Matson says. “Lawn games like bean-bag toss, and a full-size Jenga. It’s really kid-friendly.”

Husby’s still serves Door County’s best burger, according to Door County Magazine, and you can still get a proper oldfashioned and sizzling fish fry at the fourth-generation-owned Sister Bay Supper Club. Roll a game on Sister Bay Bowl’s vintage lanes while you’re there for an old-school peninsula experience. Then there is Fred and Fuzzy’s Waterfront Bar and Grill at the Little Sister Resort just south of town. The resort, founded in 1918, stayed in the Anderson family until 1973, when they sold it to Fred and Anne Luber. Together with co-owners Fuzzy and Sue Sunstrom, they started Fred and Fuzzy’s in 2001. This is one of Door County’s few boat-in dining options, and you can’t miss the colorful umbrellas adorning the open-air bar and grill. A few tips: Bloody Marys and margaritas are two don’t-miss signature drinks here; and go early if you want to tie up, as day dockage disappears quickly. Just make sure you’re tying up to the restaurant dock, not the resort pier for guests only. All about the water Even with world-class dining, shopping, lively watering holes and festivals, the Sister Bay experience goes beyond what’s on land. This is a community attuned to the water, for residents and visitors alike. “I always encourage people to get out on the water,” Matson says. “That’s how you really experience this place, and you have so many options.” Head north past Ellison Bay and Gills Rock to Washington Island, or cruise south to Ephraim, Peninsula State Park and Fish Creek. “For me, the west shore of Door County is arguably the finest boating in 500 or even 1,000 miles,” Matson continues. “And Sister Bay is the perfect base for exploring it.” For more information, visit DOORCOUNTY.COM, COME

Windlass care and feeding.

N The Bitter End Always attach the bitter end of your rode to the vessel — or risk finding out why it’s so named (because you’ll feel mighty bitter if it goes overboard). This attachment point isn’t meant to bear the load of anchoring, but rather to prevent accidental loss of the rode. The bitter end of an all-chain rode can be secured with a light line or even multiple turns of tarred nylon lashing, which can be easily cut if you need to slip anchor or add more rode. Ensure this line is long enough to reach past the deck hawsehole for ease of access. Speaking of the hawsehole, always ensure a means of securing (plugging) the hawsehole exists to prevent water from entering the vessel in rough weather. Modeling clay (available at most any craft store) makes a great temporary plug that can be molded around the anchor chain while sealing the hawsehole.

othing promotes a good night’s sleep at anchor as well as heavy ground tackle — except maybe the knowledge that there’s a functional anchor windlass at the ready to save your back by hauling it onboard in the morning. An anchor windlass is designed to perform reliably under the harshest conditions with little complaint; however, even these silent deck hands require regular maintenance to ensure proper operation. Here’s how to keep yours ready, willing and able. Anchor windlasses come in a variety of styles: Vertical or horizontal (in reference to drum orientation), manual, electric or hydraulic powered. Each has its own set of pros and cons with regards to maintenance and upkeep. While almost bulletproof, manual units require conscientious greasing and cleaning. Hydraulic units can develop leaks, while electrical units have numerous components (batteries, switches, solenoids, etc.) that require regular inspection due to their location in exposed, often wet locations. Basic tips While you should always follow the maintenance schedule provided by the manufacturer for your particular model, here are some good basic tips that can help extend the life of any windlass. • Rinse the windlass thoroughly with freshwater after each outing to wash off sand and mud. Rinsing an all-chain rode before it enters the anchor locker is also a good idea, particularly if winch components are located in the locker and can be spattered with muck and debris. • Check the gear case lube oil level regularly (most worm gear driven windlasses will have a sight glass for this). Milky oil indicates the presence of water (typically from a failed seal) and must be corrected immediately. • Check the windlass mounting hardware regularly for looseness, movement, corrosion and leaks. Leaks are often caused by a broken bedding seal, typically the result of an overstressed windlass. Leaking hardware can lead to water intrusion into cored decks, resulting in rot and delamination — an expensive issue to repair. • Work or manipulate all movable parts — clutch releases, brakes, chain strippers, etc. — to ensure proper operation and head off any seizing issues. • Inspect all electrical connections monthly for problems such as corrosion or charring (as a result of arcing). After turning off all power, disassemble and clean corroded connections with a stainless or bronze wire brush and electrical cleaner; vinegar works well in a pinch. Terminal and post connections should be clean and tight. Coating them with

dielectric grease and installing insulating rubber boots will protect against corrosion and accidental shorting. • For units with the motor and gearbox located below deck, check the casing regularly for rust; most are constructed of painted steel and will readily corrode in the damp environment of the anchor locker if the finish is damaged. Address corrosion immediately (clean, prime and paint) to prevent it from worsening. You’ll also want to verify there is enough clearance below the windlass motor to keep it free of the rode. • Inspect foredeck footswitches for damage. Ensure the hinged covers are in place (to prevent accidental operation) and that the covers themselves operate easily and have a good seal when closed. Check the rubber diaphragms for cracks, tears or deterioration. Spraying diaphragms regularly with a UV shield, such as 303 Aerospace Protectant, will noticeably extend their service life. • Disassemble, clean and lubricate the windlass annually, or according to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule, using the recommended grease and oil. Can’t find your manual? Most manufacturers will let you download it for free from its website. Proper use — tips on making your windlass last! • Motor forward when raising the anchor to reduce the strain on the windlass. Never use the windlass to pull your boat to the anchor. • A windlass isn’t designed to weigh an anchor and rode under strain. If the anchor has to be broken out, belay the rode and use the engine to break it free. • Never allow the full weight of your boat to ride on the windlass while at anchor; always remove the strain from the windlass by cleating off rope rodes or using a snubber or bridle for an all chain rode. • Always run the boat engine while raising or lowering the anchor. This allows you to minimize drain on the batteries (when using an electric windlass) and maintain control of the vessel when the anchor breaks free. • Keep the windlass covered when not in use to protect it from, salt, corrosion and UV exposure. • Use the windlass regularly to keep all internal gears lubricated. Grease and lube oil tends to settle at the bottom of the gear box, resulting in a dry section of gears that could be prone to rust. If at the dock or hauled, crank the windlass over a few turns every couple of weeks. ★

hen it comes to the time we spend on the water, we can likely all agree that we don’t have enough of it. Not even close. Whether we’re day-trippers, cruisers, watersports junkies or anglers, we’re all scrambling to find as many precious hours afloat as we can. That means we’re increasingly focused on one thing: Versatility. We want to be able to enjoy as much as we can, when we can, so even smaller boats must be able to accommodate multiple activities and passions in a comfortable way (because let’s face it, in a family of four, you’ll have four different sets of interests). Fortunately, the marine industry has been paying attention. We’re seeing a rise of thoughtful designs and innovative products that will take your on-water experience to a new level.

The rise of the pontoons This category has exploded onto the main stage. Not only are pontoon boats popular among Boomers who are downsizing, they’re also enticing the younger generations. Pontoons are affordable, yes — but even more than that, they easily accommodate families that want to do a little of everything. For starters, aluminum fencing, insert panels and castoff backyard furniture have gone the way of the dodo. Manufacturers like Manitou Pontoon Boats offer models with fiberglass exoskeletons; these also feature rotomolded fiberglass interior modules, with the helm and interior furniture integrated into the fiberglass deck enclosure. Imagine the flexible layout of a pontoon with the look and feel of a fiberglass boat. Those rotomolded interior modules can also provide additional benefits, such as a raised helm or even a bar. A pontoon’s stable, roomy platform is proving to be a creative springboard for designers. With its Escalante model, Premier Pontoons has added a curved stairway to an upper deck, which creates room for a refrigerator, wine cooler, sink and hard-sided head with standing headroom. The upper-deck slide is the cherry on top. And Premier’s Encounter model features a cuddy cabin within a raised helm, incorporating a sleeper, convertible dining table and head with nearly 6 feet of headroom. Another option for a built-in galley comes from Smoker Craft. With its new Lounge Arm Galley, the pontoon’s chaise lounge becomes a functional galley with sink, cupholders and wine bottle holder. This feature is available on all Sylvan, Starcraft and SunChaser pontoons. Harris Pontoon Boats has a patent-pending marine head compartment designed specifically for pontoon boats. It has a fiberglass liner with auto bilge, pressurized press water with 24-gallon capacity, pump-out head with 9-gallon waste

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

capacity, pressurized sink with shower unit, 3-gallon hot water heater and even a hinged sunroof. Also on deck at Harris: A power deploying and retracting swim ladder, as well as a folding swim seat. Now that pontoons incorporate fiberglass design elements and cruising amenities, the next hot design trends involve performance. With the right tubes and power plants, they already can achieve runabout-style performance. What comes after that? Better handling. Water isn’t always flat, after all. It can get “bathtubby” with heavy boat traffic, or kick up a fuss in foul weather, so a rough-water package comes in handy. Lowe Boats package includes strengthened triple tubes, lifting strakes and Wake Tamer spray shields. Lowe also offers Panther Power Steering — an economical power steering system that uses a mechanical cable to the power steering pump. Instead of feeling prop torque, you’ll feel like you’re driving an automobile. Cruising in style Enhancing the cruising experience sometimes means undertaking a repower, and more boaters are considering electric options. Just think: Steam engines are approximately 10 percent efficient, gas is roughly 25 percent, and diesel is 35 percent. Electric? More than 90 percent. Admittedly, our battery technology still has a way to go, but that’s not stopping innovators. Elco Motor Yachts — which started building electric-powered craft in the 1890s as the Electric Launch Company — has an EP Parallel Hybrid Electric System that combines the comfort and fuel-efficiency of an electric motor with the power and range of a diesel motor. With this system, a diesel or gas engine is connected to a propeller shaft through an Elco inboard electric motor and a clutching system. This allows the diesel motor to drive the propeller directly; or, with the flip of a switch, the electric motor can power the boat. If you’re tackling a more traditional repower, take a look at Mercury Marine. The company now offers Mercury Active Trim with its 40- to 700-hp engines. This integrated GPS speed-based automatic trim system eliminates the need to manually control your trim settings. You can select one of five trim profiles that suits the current conditions — or your driving style — and the system will automatically adjust the trim level as you change speed or enter a turn. The cruising experience is about more than power, however; it’s also about livability. SureShade can help you expand and enhance your onboard living space through telescoping boat shade systems. These permanent shade solutions are offered in both manual

and automated styles; they can be installed on a hardtop, T-top, tower or arch; and you can use them in the cockpit, bow or both. The company works with more than 50 major boat brands, and aftermarket upgrades are definitely doable. Another key element to livability is meal preparation. Some small boats come equipped with a multiple-burner cooktop but not an oven; Omnia provides a solution with its stove-top oven with baking rack. Affectionately known as a “wonder pot,” the stove-top oven is compatible with any type of burner or even a grill. Users report that it’s small, lightweight and easy to use — and more importantly, you can bake everything from pizza, casseroles and bread to cookies, cakes and brownies. What if you have a boat that’s completely tricked out for cruising and entertaining but lacks some of the fishing bells and whistles? If you have an angler in the family, check out Yeti. The premium cooler manufacturer has a rod holster add-on. Upping the cool factor. Most of us want our boats to have an engaging mix of comfort, convenience and coolness, whether that means upgraded stereos, subwoofers and speakers, touch-screen electronics, or a scattering of nightclub-inspired LED accent lights. We want the fun gadgets to enhance our experiences on the water. If you want to improve the sound quality on deck, take a look at the Bullfrog Kicker waterproof, portable Bluetooth speaker. You can customize yours with the Kicker Connect app, which allows you to access a five-band equalizer, volume control, battery status, FM tuner with presets and more. You can also link Bullfrogs together for even better results.

Nothing is better than cool water on a hot day, and you don’t necessarily have to go for a swim to enjoy it. MisterComfort misting systems can be installed on Bimini tops, T-tops or hard tops on any size boat; when they’re in action, the cockpit temperatures can drop by 25 degrees. When you want to go for a swim, it’s nice to enter and exit the water from a swim platform. If you’d like to add a swim platform or upgrade your existing one, check out aftermarket fiberglass options from Swim Platforms, or a teak option from Whitecap Industries. Let’s not forget watersports. Not all boats are tricked out to specialize in this arena, yet you might have wakeboard or waterski fans aboard. A nice add-on is the Bolster Buddy, a versatile cushion crafted from marine-grade, high-density foam and vinyl that provides extra height for the skipper or spotter. The Bolster Buddy can also serve as a headrest while enjoying an afternoon on the hook, or provide back support for paddlers if canoeing or kayaking is on the schedule. Of course, now that stand-up paddleboarding is all the rage, you might look for ways to carry more gear. Fortunately, you can add a SUP rack to your boat fairly easily. StoreYourBoard has specialized racks for pontoon boats and fishing boats, as well as a rack that will hold up to three SUPs. Boat Outfitters has an option that will fit right in your boat’s rod holders. This is just a small sampling of what’s out there. Start looking and you just might find it’s easier than you expect to create a boating experience — and lifestyle — that will suit everyone aboard. ★

CRUISING WITH KIDS BY DI A N E S E LTZ E R

Play Dates at the Boat Are you prepared to invite your kids’ friends to the boat? ur boat time is all about family time, but we also enjoy inviting friends aboard. Sharing a piece of our boat life with our “land friends” is always a good time that seems to make us appreciate our days on the water even more. So it’s only natural that as our kids grow up they want to extend invitations to their own friends to join us at our boat. This issue is top of mind for me right now as we are making plans for some of our first “boat play dates” this summer. While our two daughters have a great time playing together, they often tell us how much they would enjoy sharing their boating lifestyle with friends. Our oldest daughter is also anxious to take it a step further and entertain overnight guests on our home away from home. We’re excited for our kids to share their passion for boating with friends, but we can’t help wonder: Are we really ready for boat play dates? There’s a lot to consider when inviting other children onto your boat. From water safety to ensuring proper respect of your onboard rules, boating is not an ordinary play date.

DIANE SELTZER is an avid boater, marketing director for SureShade sunshade systems, author of the children’s book “The Amazing Adventures of Boat Girl” and runs the boating lifestyle sites MYBOATLIFE .COM and BOATERKIDS.COM.

Water safety for all kids on-board Our kids have grown up understanding the basic boat safety rules. They wore life jackets before they could walk and learned to listen to the captain before they could talk. The rules of boating and boat safety have been instilled in our kids since they were born and are reinforced every time we go out on the boat. Unfortunately, you often need to fast-track safety lessons with guests that are new to boating. You need to explain to them that following the rules doesn’t mean they can’t have fun, but rather your number one concern is that they have safe fun on your boat. Our basic boat rules include: • Always wear a life jacket while cruising. • Listen to the captain and follow any orders given. • Stay seated when the boat is underway, especially when docking. • Wear a life jacket or swim jacket while swimming behind the boat. • Wear sunscreen, and drink lots of water throughout the day.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Have fun! In addition to these basic safety rules, we also have some boat manner rules we enforce on our boat. These include: Don’t stand or jump on the boat seats; towel off after swimming; and no rough playing near the water. Of course you may have more specific rules you want to add to the list depending on your type of boat or if you participate in other boating activities like watersports. Make sure your own kids understand that despite having friends on-board they must continue to follow the rules and ensure that their friends do as well (so they will be invited back again!). Life jackets and provisions Every boat should be equipped with extra life jackets for guests, but do you have proper sizes for additional kids? Check with the parents to find out their current weight so you can ensure the kids will have a life jacket that fits before a visit. Additional provisions may also be necessary for visiting kids. You should be prepared with enough sunscreen, towels, water and kid-friendly food for everyone. You should also be prepared for any overnight guests with extra bedding and a plan for allocating space in the cabin. Adequate adult supervision The responsibility of watching someone else’s kids while out on the boat should not be taken lightly. If you are unsure about how a child will behave under your supervision — or if that child’s parents are even comfortable sending their kid off to a boat play date — then you should consider also inviting the parents. Our first boat play dates have been full-family entertaining. It gives us a chance to see how well-behaved children are on our boat, and it gives their parents a chance to understand what’s involved in a day out on a boat. If things go well, then a play date without the parent is an easier next step. Finally, my plan for our first visits is to keep it simple and not plan any big boat cruise or excursion. It will be just an average day anchored out, full of swimming and cannonballs off the swim platform. It’s great that we can share these days with our kids and even better that they are excited to share a bit of their boat life with their friends. ★

said, prices on chartplotter and fish finder technology have dropped drastically in the past few years, so you may be pleasantly surprised at what you get for the money. VHF radios, GPS and MOB Fixed-mount VHF radios and handhelds also have many features previously unavailable to small boat owners. Want a backup GPS and need a VHF? There are combination units that have a good GPS built in. Great as a backup to find your way home, these units also allow for position information to be broadcast automatically when the DSC (Digital Selective Calling) emergency button is pressed. Some handhelds, such as the Uniden MHS33B, not only have built-in GPS but also have a Bluetooth interface that allows you to privately text other boats with similar devices on-board via your smartphone. Is that kill switch cord always in your way? Is it so uncomfortable that you stopped clipping in when underway? The new Fell Marine MOB+ Wireless Engine Cutoff Switch allows you to move freely around the boat unencumbered simply by wearing a small fob on a lanyard, clipped to your person or on a wrist strap. Up to four people can be connected at one time; if anyone goes overboard, the dash-mounted sensor notifies the captain immediately. If the captain goes overboard, the sensor will instantly shut off the engines. If Fido loves to jump in and swim, you can clip one to his collar and be notified the minute he is overboard. These are just a few of the exciting possibilities for boaters with smaller craft. Size is not a determination of what technology is available aboard; the only limits today are space and budget. ★

Chartplotters and fish finders Combination chartplotters and fish finders offer small boat owners more features than ever. All major marine electronic manufacturers now offer compact displays with many of the features found in larger systems — like touch-screens, built-in down and side view sounders, as well as CHIRP combined with traditional broadband fish finders. Units such as Simrad’s GO7 XSE offer all these features — as well as a 7-inch touch-screen, a full-function chartplotter with preloaded charts, builtin Wi-Fi access and an all-in-one transom transducer — for less than $500. Humminbird offers units, such as its Helix 5 CHIRP GPS G2, for less than $300, with features borrowed from its larger units; these features include a mapping GPS chartplotter with AutoChart Live capability — where your depth sounder creates real-time bathymetric charting on a display. Garmin offers similar bathymetric chart creation features (called Quickdraw Contour Mapping) in its small boat-friendly Echomap and Striker series display. This feature can be had in displays as small as 4 inches. Is your dash small enough that engine gauges and a chartplotter won’t fit well? Smaller multi-function units on the market today have an NMEA 2000 input that allows capable engines to input data directly into your display, eliminating the need for gauges altogether. Because of this technology, it’s now becoming more common to see skiffs with an “all glass” digital console. When selecting a combination unit for your smaller craft, it’s important to remember that these models can be feature-rich but have been scaled down in some way from their larger brethren. Research what features you must have and which would prove themselves useful to your type of boating and/or fishing. Each model and each line of products will have some differences and compromises. Some models add different features with various screen sizes even within the same model line. Remember that added features will typically drive the price up. That being

here was a time not too long ago when small boat owners could not enjoy much of the technology found on larger boats. Space restrictions at the helm, budget and technology made it difficult to access the same features found on larger, more expensive systems. Luckily, this is no longer true today, as marine manufacturers have introduced innovative and technologically-advanced products for small boat owners.

Trailer Checklist P HOTO COURTE SY OF WI K I

Preventing trailer problems with proper maintenance.

T

he weather is perfect, the fish are biting and it’s time to cruise. How many times have you trailered your boat to the nearest ramp this season? Do you thoroughly check the trailer before heading out? Do you check it before bringing it back? Here’s a tip: The trailer base is easier to examine without the boat. Taking a few minutes to inspect and prepare your trailer before going out may prevent expensive maintenance later on. Develop an inspection routine and pass on this knowledge to others; it keeps you and your boat safe, and from being included in video bloopers of boats skidding down the highway. Here’s a helpful checklist, starting from the towing vehicle to the end of the trailer. Adjust the list to match your trailer and add other reminders. Happy trailering! Taking a walkabout ❏ Locate the trailer label for information. ❏ Check all over for rust, cracked welded areas, wear and tear, and loose or missing parts. ❏ Can the tow vehicle handle the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): The combined weight of the trailer, boat, engines, gasoline, water in reservoirs and equipment? Gasoline weighs about 6 pounds/gallon and water weighs about 8½ pounds/ gallon. (Example: 100 gallons of gas equals 600 pounds, and 20 gallons of water equals 170 pounds) ❏ Is the vehicle’s ball mount adequate to handle the GVWR? Lock it into the vehicle’s trailer hitch. Trailer tongue ❏ The trailer coupler covers the ball, is latched and locked. ❏ Attach cables or cross chains from the tongue and clip them to the vehicle’s trailer hitch holes. ❏ Attach additional safety cables to the vehicle hitch holes. ❏ Check the brake fluid reservoir on trailers with brakes. ❏ Check electrical connectors for corrosion. Plug the adapter into the vehicle’s trailer hitch. ❏ Raise and store the tongue jack, lock it. ❏ What’s the tongue weight? Is it too light or heavy? This affects the boat’s balance while moving. Bow area ❏ Tighten the bow hitch strap and connect the safety cable to the bow. ❏ Is the bow stop in good condition? Note: Some boats don’t have these. Trailer base ❏ Is there exposed wood or torn carpet on the bunks that will damage the hull?

❏ ❏ ❏ ❏

If applicable, are the trailer’s rollers in good shape? Check for rust, faulty welding or holes. Check the axles and cross pieces for weakened materials. Check the leaf springs for rust and wear.

Tires ❏ Use the appropriate size tires, and store the spare tire vertically. ❏ Located the PSI numbers on the trailer label or tire sidewall and inflate the tires to the correct PSI (and confirm PSI with a pressure gauge). ❏ Check for tire wear, dry rot and good tread. A trick is to insert a penny upside-down into the tire’s groove, and if you see Lincoln’s head, replace the tire. ❏ After being on the road, check the tires for loss of air pressure; heat may increase tire inflation. ❏ All tires should be the same type and diameter, radial (R), bias ply (D) and (ST) for trailer tire. ❏ Check the fender for rust, and tighten the bolts every 50 to 100 miles. ❏ Look for streaks of oil or grease along the hub nuts on the inside and outside. ❏ Touch the hubs after being on the road for several miles; heat may indicate failing bearings. Trailer rear ❏ Use transom straps to secure the back of the boat. ❏ Support the engine up while moving. ❏ Turn on the emergency flashers to check the brake and turn signal lights on the trailer and tow vehicle. ❏ Check dual tail lights if present. ❏ Replace deflectors if they’re peeling. Miscellaneous items ❏ Remember the boat plug. ❏ Most trailer tires have a running speed of 65 mph. Never run on flat tires. ❏ Do you have the right jack for a flat tire while the trailer is holding the boat? ❏ Do you have a long handled, four-sided lug wrench? ❏ Remove antennas, canvases, Biminis and anything that could fly out of the boat while moving. ❏ Distribute cargo weight in the boat. Use bungee cords as needed. ❏ Wash down the trailer with freshwater in a designated area. ❏ Have a professional examine the trailer if you suspect a problem. ❏ Do you have boat insurance that covers trailering your boat, including changing or replacing flat tires and roadside assistance? ★

Barletta L25UC Combining luxury with performance.

I

t was love at first sight for Kyle Stenzel and his team at Spring Brook Marina and Yacht Sales. “We did a lot of research into builders and are convinced that Barletta has a company culture very similar to our own: Very service oriented,” Stenzel says. “Their construction quality is incredibly impressive, and the design features are industry leading.” With five Spring Brook locations on lakes and rivers in Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio and Michigan, Stenzel says “We’re very excited about this new partnership,” and points to the Barletta L25UC pontoon boat as a perfect example. This 25-footer can carry up to 14 guests on sumptuous, quilted Dolce marine vinyl seating. Forward of the helm are a pair of lounges with armrests and forward-facing chaise backs, featuring immense stowage underneath. Not only are there more than ample “Yeti-sized” cupholders for large mugs, there’s also multiple USB ports for charging devices. The one-level flooring is finished in luxury woven vinyl that’s both gentle on bare feet and easy to clean. Opposite the helm is a co-captain’s chair, and just aft is a multi-use rear seating area called the Ultra Lounge, which

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

can be either forward- or aft-facing loungers with pivoting seatbacks or an oversized sunpad. This seating configuration is centered around a stow-away table for dining and in-floor “Yeti-Ready” cooler storage. The skipper has an extra-large, high-back helm seat that reclines, swivels and is set on a raised platform for 360-degree visibility. A Simrad 7-inch chartplotter is standard, and an upgraded Hertz Marine stereo with six speakers provides the music. Have a furry friend aboard? Integrated food and water dishes are hidden underneath the helm platform. The two or three 26-inch pontoons are insulated with rubber pads to eliminate any rattles. The ski tow system is the Barletta tube/tow cage directly mounted to the chassis, enabling it to handle more than 3,000 pounds! Water toys and skis can be stored in deep in-floor lockers. With up to 300-hp on tritoon versions, the dual-stage pontoon strakes get the Barletta L25UC on plane fast and give speeds into the 40-mph range. Combining luxury with performance, it’s no surprise the Spring Brook Marina team picked this as their “fave”. ★

A refreshed “unsinkable” Whaler.

T

o celebrate the 60th anniversary of its “unsinkable” classics, Boston Whaler has introduced the new 210 Montauk. This model bears the same simplicity, utility and reliability of earlier Montauks, but has been fully redesigned from the keel up for versatility, use of space and modern features. At the bow you’ll find an integrated fishbox/storage compartment and bow locker with a fiberglass cover; both compartments have overboard drains. Aft, cushioned quarter seats are now standard in each corner, and the helm seat is reversible with a flip-forward locking backrest and ample stowage underneath. “The new Montauk delivers true turnkey operation, helping boaters get out on the water quickly and easily, and helping to ensure they enjoy the experience,” says Boston Whaler President Nick Stickler. Flagship of the Montauk family — a name that dates back to the first Boston Whaler models — the 210 Montauk is designed to be “hose-and-go,” making maintenance effortless for fishing, exploring and family fun. The hull features the traditional Boston Whaler seaworthy

ride, with a precision-engineered hull and Unibond construction. Standard power for the 210 Montauk is a Mercury 150-hp XL FourStroke outboard, while an optional Mercury 200-hp XL L6 DTS Verado features hydraulic steering. Each 210 is fully customizable with a purpose-selected array of options. For anglers, a fishing package adds a 94-quart cooler seat with both cushion and backrest, plus tackle drawers and additional console-mounted rod holders. The Deluxe Leaning Post option includes a 30-gallon livewell and raw-water washdown. You can also add seatbacks to the forward seats for casual cruising. Electronics packages feature state-of-the-art Raymarine systems for navigation and fish-finding. The 210 Montauk — as well as the 190 Montauk — is offered with a “vintage-style” teak package that includes teak footing on the swim ladder and helm footrests. To make the 210 Montauk a turn-key package, Boston Whaler includes a galvanized tandem axle trailer with swing tongue for easy storage, plus disk brakes and LED lighting for safe trailering. The 210 Montauk is an intriguing model for those who remember classic Whalers. ★

Chris-Craft Launch 38

|

“T

he Chris-Craft Launch 38 is the ultimate dayboat for Great Lake boaters,” says Craig Duchow of CenterPointe Yacht Services, with five locations in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan. As the largest model in the Chris-Craft Launch series, the 38 combines a centerline console (featuring triple high-back seats and a swept-back windscreen) with separate seating and entertainment areas both fore and aft reached via secure walkarounds on either side. The Launch 38 is evocative of classic speedboats, with yacht-like styling from the reversed transom with wide swim platform to the gentle tumblehome topsides. The hull has double strakes, a flared bow and a 20-degree deep-V for a dry, seaworthy ride in all conditions. Forward of the helm is a sunbathing chaise in the bow with high sides; this seat converts from a double seat into a full sunpad with a filler cushion. Aft, twin curved settees wrap around the walkway to the transom. Enhancing this entertainment area is the outdoor galley with grill, ceramic cooktop, microwave, icemaker, sink and fridge, all tucked into a sleek teak console. Down below are two sleeping areas: An island double berth forward and a cabin aft with a double and single berth.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Completing the weekending features are a spacious, enclosed head with Tecma electric toilet and full-headroom shower. Duchow adds: “The large, open bow, spacious cockpit and complete galley above deck are great for entertaining family and friends on short excursions. The bluewater hull design gives the owner confidence to navigate large expanses of open water. If you plan to overnight, you will find all the comforts of home below deck with sleeping for five, along with a separate head and shower.” Sterndrive packages include twin Mercury V8 Bravo IIIs to 430 hp, twin Volvo V8 6.2L Duoprops to 430 hp, or twin Volvo D6 diesel Duoprops to 400 hp. Outboard packages using twin or triple Mercury Verado or Yamaha four-strokes up to 350 hp are also available. CenterPointe encourages skippers to “build their own” Chris-Craft, adding options such as a fiberglass hardtop, generator, bowthrusters and teak decking. Ready for day trips or weeklong getaways, the Chris-Craft Launch 38 brings stylish elegance, outstanding construction and satisfying seaworthiness to a Great Lake near you. ★

I

was chatting recently with a build-captain friend about a refit project he is heading up. He noted that the owner has been requesting a number of changes to the plans, as he wants to build the best and most up-to-date yacht possible. My friend, in summation of our conversation, stated that he is in the “yes business;” yes, he will realize the owner’s wishes the best he can and, yes, he will deliver the owner’s dream yacht. This “yes” concept came to mind when I stepped aboard the new Pursuit DC 365 Dual Console. Pursuit must have the same mantra as my friend because it appears they thought of everything when developing the DC 365.

Best in class

Yes, those are hullside windows, thanks to the lower cabins. Yes, that’s an integrated hardtop/window frame with sunroof and 3.25-inch tube framing that adds rigidity and style to the structure. Yes, those are triple Yamaha F300s hanging on the transom. Having been on Pursuit boats before, I was trying to be a bit more critical and look for issues on the DC 365. The problem was that I really couldn’t find anything to take issue with. Pursuit continues to build its line of Dual Consoles — as well as the Offshore, Center Console and Sport lines — with a focus on innovation and comfort through a maddening dedication to building the finest craft in their classes. The fact that Pursuit engineered the DC 365 with so many features to make her a true utilitarian vessel is a testament to the boatbuilder’s heritage and building prowess.

By the numbers

Starting with the powerplants, the triple Yamahas produce 300 hp each, offering instant response and impressive speed when pushing the 17,000-pound hull. We ran inshore taking several reciprocal speed readings, and this package can get you out and back fast or leisurely. At 2500 rpm, we tooled around at 12.2 mph (10.5 knots, 16 gph combined), upping the ante to 35.21 mph (30.6 knots, 34.5 gph) at 4000 rpm. Wide open was an exhilarating ride at 52.8 mph (45.9 knots, 78.3 gph) at 5800 rpm. Pursuit’s hull design includes two lifting strakes per side (one half way, the other almost the full length) and wide chines, keeping spray at bay and adding stability. Noteworthy is the invert on the “V,” creating a flat area at the transom, which adds top-end lift and delivers clean water to the center outboard prop.

It is what it is

On deck, the DC 365 can be what you want it to be. As a cruiser, the deck offers padded fold-down bench seating across the transom and along the port side. Add in the aft-facing bench with under-freezer box and flip-down

backrest for access to the tackle drawers. In-deck fish and storage boxes keep the catch fresh and supplies dry. Fold up the seats for a roomy fishing deck with four gunwale and five transom rod holders, a 28-gallon transom baitwell and a transom door to pull in the big ones. A molded entertainment center to starboard has a hot/cold sink, Corian countertop, electric grill, cutting board and fridge/ freezer, so your catch can go from hook to cook. Access the 8.0 kw Fischer Panda diesel generator through the center deck hatch; here you’ll find a 23-gallon tank, strainers, batteries, fuel filters and dedicated spaces for the swim ladder, stern anchor and cockpit table. Up one step is the helm deck, with a combo bench/ lounge seat to port. Pursuit paid attention to details here, including diamond stitching, side padding and an armrest. Across from the portside lounger is the twin bench helm seat with bolster and armrests. The seat swivels 90 degrees so you can join the group or take in a new view. Included is a molded-in footrest that folds down to create a standing platform for those vertically challenged. When looking at the starboard helm, it’s apparent that this is a thinking man’s helm. First, the molded fiberglass helm unclips and tilts for easy access to wiring. There’s room for dual 16-inch Garmin GPSMAP 7616 chartplotter displays (Pursuit likes the Garmin array of electronics, or pick your own), Yamaha engine display (all three motors on one screen, perfect!), bank of 24 rocker switches, bowthruster and more. There are also a couple of pads on the face of the helm that help to protect your knees from banging when in heavy seas. Yes, Pursuit thought of that, too!

Look into my consoles

The magic is in the dual consoles. The starboard helm console has a step-down complete head with sink, vacuum-flush head with 22-gallon holding tank, vanity and skylight. And, yes, it also has a shower/toilet stall and full-height linen closet with a bifold door that doubles as the shower door. A 6-gallon water heater is standard.

PURSUIT DC 365 SPECIFICATIONS Across in the port console is a mini cabin with both a forward and aft berth area, perfect for a quick snooze or overnight on the hook. Pursuit maximized the space by adding in a leather bench settee, 28-inch LED TV, vertical/horizontal rod storage, cedar locker, reverse cycle heat/AC and hullside windows. There’s even a microwave oven.

Don’t say it

There is one “No.” Do not call the DC 365 a bowrider, despite the center bow seating area. According to David Glenn, marketing director for S2 Yachts, Inc. (builder of Pursuit and Tiara Yachts), they prefer to refer to it as “luxury lounge seating.” And it’s more than just a few pads in a circle. Pursuit created an oasis with oversized forward lounge seats, complete with armrests, drink holders, 12V outlet and two USB plugs. Storage underneath the starboard seat includes dedicated dive tank space. The seats wrap around the front with center filler cushion to create a giant sunpad. Other niceties on the DC 365 include a starboard-side boarding gate with clip-in boarding ladder for water access, 3-hp bowthruster, Lenco trim tabs, center window and bow door with floor drain. Add in outriggers, electric retractable

cockpit sunshade, Yamaha Helm Master joystick controller, autopilot and other options for a tricked-out ride. In case you’re alone and fall overboard, a very cool emergency four-step telescoping ladder pulls out of the hull’s transom. This makes so much sense that every boat should have one. Keeping all of this together is a vinyl ester resin, hand-laminated hull with an infused structural stringer grid system and a beefy 5-ply transom with Pursuit’s patented Transom Reinforcement Grid. Pursuit is so sure of the DC 365’s construction that they throw in a five-year hull, deck and blister-free warranty.

With all this packed into a 37-foot hull. You would think the profile would be clunky and overstuffed. Well, Pursuit did a yeoman’s job ensuring the DC 365 is as sleek at the docks as it is blowing through an inlet. With a raised sheer forward that remains unbroken until the transom, and a raked windshield coupled with tapering side windows, the DC 365 has a chopped appearance that is indicative of a lean, mean cruising/fishing machine. If there ever was a boat that you could say “Yes” to, it’s the Pursuit DC 365. H

Changing perceptions. BY ALAN WENDT

W

ho in their right mind would deliberately intersect a string of big yachts churning up a 3-foot-plus wake? That would be me, simply following the direction of a World Cat dealer determined to demonstrate the solid performance and soft landing of this unusual-looking power catamaran hull. Normally, such a move would ensure pounding, slapping, a bit of risk for passengers and a rather exhausting ride if you were in a traditional monohull boat. Some boaters, quite frankly, can’t handle that type of abuse. Case in point, a customer who was on-board World Cat’s new 280CC-X during our test ride. His wife has three fused vertebrae and had all but given up enjoyable days on the water; that is until they switched to the World Cat brand. He was looking to trade up, and this twin-powered Yamaha outboard version was living up to the hype. Instead of a bang, we met each wake with a quiet glide, like that of a speed skater on ice methodically rising with the wake and settling back down with a gentle touch. All of this, mind you, was done without throttling the twin 200s back, letting us stay on course and speed.

World Cat admits that LUXURY and STYLE were key considerations in the design of the 280CC-X.

Smooth and sleek

The secret to taking on the big waves is a combination of World Cat’s refined planning hull and new radiused tunnel. Pads were added to the aft portion of the running surfaces to soften the reentry. Engineers adopting next generation design language and technology sculpted a sheerline that starts high and slopes along the length of the boat. About midship, the sheerline levels at a gunwale height of 25 inches. “This allows the boat to get to those key fishing spots fast and provide a capable, stable platform, whether for fishing, diving, cruising or entertaining,” notes Andrew Brown, president of World Cat. With a fuel capacity of 220 gallons and a typical cruise speed of 26 mph yielding 2.4 mpg, the boat has a 500-mile range; that’s easily enough to dash back and forth across Lake Michigan. I liken the looks of a power cat to your first taste of a craft beer or 12-year-old scotch. Both take some time to grow on you. World Cat offers a lot of rides, knowing that’s the key to converting boaters, even those whose previous experience with early twin hull power cats were turned off by sluggish performance and a nagging, non-intuitive response to course changes. The 280CC-X changes those perceptions. World Cat admits that luxury and style were key considerations in the design of the 280CC-X. The sheerline stands taller than previous World Cats but softens moving toward the swept-back Garmin glass-dash console, topped by a surfboard-edge hardtop and built-in glass windshield. Rich, textured two-tone upholstery with raised stitching and fold-down armrests highlight the curvaceous, adjustable dual bolster seats. The look is extremely modern, with an elegance rarely seen on a boat this size.

Twin Garmin GPSMAP 7612xsv 12-inch multi-touch widescreen displays; a Fusion Marine entertainment system console; and a row of symmetrically-placed system push buttons create a smartly configured helm. I found everything within arm’s reach without having to crawl over my passenger or take my eyes off the water ahead. Two Yeti-size cupholders and a glovebox round out the console. There are four JL Audio speakers on-board ready to blast out your favorite playlist on the run out, or a triumphant fight song when cruising back with the tournament-winning catch. Behind the helm seat is a robust tackle and bait prep area.

Concealed tackle storage drawers, a 30-gallon livewell with a clear lid and tool storage lead the way to a wide-open cockpit. Clearly designed for fishing, there are eight recess-mounted rod holders between the transom and topsides; an optional rocket launcher on the aft hardtop has space for five additional rods. Twin 355-quart in-deck fishboxes flank to port and starboard. Both fishboxes have diaphragm pumps, room to handle a 5-gallon bucket and are configured with fold- out racks inside, doubling as rod lockers capable of accommodating four outfits each.

Cruise in comfort

Elsewhere you’ll find twin insulated 180-quart storage compartments and an insulated 36-quart cooler compartment in the bow. Thanks to the catamaran-style hull, the bow is much wider than your typical bowrider. The U-shaped lounge offers seating for seven and includes lots of legroom. Four cupholders and weather-resistant plug-in stations for mobile devices are tucked underneath the coaming bolsters. An extra-wide, cushioned forward-facing seat is integrated into head door. This neatly hides the entrance to the wide-side hinged console door that opens to the spacious head with fiberglass interior, bright LED lighting, mirror and Corian counter with toiletries storage. One of the challenges older boaters face are the contortions required to bend down, back in, and gracefully mount most floating throne rooms that are often dark, unventilated and eerily resemble an upright MRI scanner. For a 28-foot boat, World Cat’s configuration is pleasantly accessible. Another hidden feature is the concealed windlass system with a 300-foot line, 15-foot chain and 22-pound through-hull anchor. A remote control with a simple up/ down button and raw water washdown is in one of two forward bow compartments. Integrated LED docking lights are standard, and Sea-Vision surface-mount LED underwater lights are optional. Optimus 360 System with electronic steering, SeaStation and joystick are worth the extra cost to make docking worry-free. Skinny water near you? How does a 14-inch draft sound? This is an easy boat to master. The onboard GPS clocked us close to 50 mph at WOT. From a trailering or lift aspect, the 280CC-X tips the scales at 7,300 pounds. This is definitely a boat that mandates a test ride to erase any preconceived notions you may have about power cats. ★

Good driving is critical for success. Try to find an experienced waterskier or wakeboarder to drive. The driver must be sensitive to the person in tow; for example, a lighter-weight person will need less power during the start than a heavier individual. Acceleration should be smooth and not jerky. Boat speed does not need to be too fast. Novice waterskiers will go from 15 to 25 mph and wakeboard riders need 15 to 20 mph, depending on their size. Hand signals are also important. Thumbs up by the one in tow means “give a little more speed” and thumb down means “slow down.” Swiping a hand past the neck/ shoulders means “stop the boat,” while tapping the top of the head means “get me back on the boat.”

child along in shallow water on skis or a wakeboard. This teaching technique also can be done behind the boat for teens and adults with the driver putting the boat in a slow idle. Now let’s hit the water. Have a watersports mentor get into the water next to the child to make sure they maintain the proper position as the boat begins to accelerate. This will help relax the child. The key to all these methods is to keep the experience positive and to minimize falls and failed attempts.

The basics The technique for starting on waterskis or a wakeboard is the same except that the skis stay vertical and the wakeboard is positioned sideways in front of the chest. Both waterskiing and wakeboarding are lower body sports, meaning the legs are engaged to do the work while the upper body is positioned to take the pull of the boat.

Lower body Start in the water in a sitting position. When the boat driver slowly idles to stretch the line, bend your knees to the chest and flex your ankles toward your shins. You want your toes pointed up and not toward the boat. This will keep the tips of the skis or the side of the board above the water and close to your chest during the start. This will help get the waterskis or wakeboard to plane as the boat accelerates.

Upper body Your back, shoulders and head should be upright, and your arms should be relaxed with hands holding the handle palms down

Driving tips

BOATING WITH YOUR FAMILY and friends is great fun. But for even more thrills, get out of the boat. That’s right. Get behind the boat and learn how to waterski and wakeboard. Watersports that you can do on your boat’s wake are not only a blast, they also give you a full-body workout. That’s especially important today when we’re all (particularly kids) consumed with smartphones and computers. Waterskiing and wakeboarding are accessible for all ages, making it a perfect way to keep the entire family involved in a shared activity. You don’t need a lot of strength; as long as you can stand up from a chair, then you can get up on waterskis or a wakeboard. The key to success is focusing on technique. Although learning how to waterski or wakeboard is not difficult, beginners may be apprehensive. This can make it hard to concentrate and can also make muscles tense up. Before hopping in the water, it’s best to prepare. Start by observing others, either by watching videos on the internet or someone behind the boat. Learning together with others who are at or near the child’s skill level is a great way to learn. A professional coach is always the best way to progress quickly, but if one is not available find someone who is proficient in the sport and is patient. A mentor can review the steps of the sport with the child before getting in the water. Before you get started, make sure the rider has a proper-fitting life jacket. If a kid is intimidated by waterskiing or wakeboarding, have them try tubing to get them comfortable being towed behind a boat. Also, you can have someone hold the line and pull the

with a light grip. If your arms and hands are tense you will pull in on the handle, causing you to fall on your back during the start. When you hands are relaxed, the rest of your arms and back will be relaxed. Your shoulders should be soft and tucked into your back with the handle lower near your waist. Starting with your arms stretched out from your shoulders can lead to falling forward.

Ready to go As the boat begins to accelerate, beginners tend to stand up too quickly. Be patient! Keep your knees and ankles tucked into your body. You will feel pressure on the bottom of the waterskis or wakeboard. Absorb the pressure with your legs, and in a few seconds the pressure will put you on top of the water. As you feel this, rise up using your leg strength, just as you would when standing from a chair. As you rise up on a wakeboard, simultaneously use your feet to turn the board vertical with the boat. Viola! You’re up and smiling from ear to ear. The mentor and

everyone in the boat should be cheering and offering positive reinforcement. Executing the start correctly will put you on the water in an optimal position that provides balance and stability. Continue keeping ankles and knees bent. This distributes body weight over your feet evenly, giving you optimal balance and control of the waterskis or wakeboard. Your upper body is upright and the handle is near your waist. While waterskiing, your feet, knees and chest face the boat; in wakeboarding, the tip of the board will be pointed toward the boat while your feet, knees and chest are facing sideways away from the boat. With this solid foundation, you will quickly progress to crossing the wake on waterskis and jumping the wake on a wakeboard. This is just the beginning as you explore all the watersports you can do behind a boat. ★

ing choos ht the rig equipment

Waterskis, wakeboards, bindings and vests come in a variety of sizes. Waterskis for children come tied together to help them keep the skis together during the start. Bindings that fit your feet specifically will provide better control over the ski or board. Handles come in different diameters for different size hands. You will have a better chance at getting up when your equipment fits your size and ability level.

ot far from the 45th parallel, Michigan’s Old Mission Peninsula bisects West and East Grand Traverse Bay. Old Mission is just east of the larger Leelanau Peninsula, and both peninsulas are winery hotbeds. The Grand Traverse region vineyards offer the best opportunity to produce fine wines. The rolling hills created by glaciation exposed glacial moraine, a mixture of rocks and sediment. Old sand dunes just below the surface provide excellent drainage. This soil mixture and geography create microclimates ideal for growing grapes. Old Mission, the smaller of the two peninsulas, offers 10 winery options. The larger Leelanau Peninsula offers the same rolling terrain, but it expands winery options to 22. Whether driving or taking a wine tour (recommended), keep in mind that tasting wine is totally subjective. Hold the wine in your mouth for a few seconds to absorb the intricate complex taste. Go ahead and swish it; you’ll look like a connoisseur and will enjoy the delicate, sometime fruity, bouquet. The best tip to enjoy the nuances between wines is to have a glass of water nearby to rinse the previous taste. Bread also helps to cleanse the palette and enhances the differences between the wines. I've selected five Old Mission wineries for their uniqueness. The other five, just as valid, also produce fine wines: Black Star Farms Old Mission; Hawthorne Vineyard; Chateau Grand Traverse; Bonobo Winery; and Peninsula Cellars. Follow the yellow brick road (M 37), and if you have the time visit all 10. MARI VINEYARDS is one of the most distinctive new wineries on Old Mission Peninsula. Though it was started in 1999 by founder Mary Lagina, the winery and tasting room are notable new structures on the peninsula. A unique skylight protrudes between the vineyard rows exposing an elaborate cavern system 10 feet below. Caverns radiate from the Oculus (skylight), providing a natural temperature/humidity barrel-aging environment. The flagship wine, Row 7 — the first wine to be introduced in 2006 — only marked the beginning of its many fine selections. Mari Vineyard’s first seven rows have since grown to 60 acres planted with 20 varietals. MARIVINEYARDS.COM LAKELANDBOATING.COM

CHATEAU CHANTAL, located just a mile past Mapleton, stands majestically over the vineyard. In 1983, Bob and Nadine Begin purchased a 60-acre cherry orchard; by 1986, wine grapes had replaced the cherries. In addition to its elaborate tasting room, an adjoining French-style bed and breakfast makes Chateau Chantal a vacation destination and allows the winery to label its wines as “Estate” wines. Thursday night jazz music flows through the vines like fine wine. Expansive sunrise and sunset decks produce spectacular panoramic views of both East and West Grand Traverse Bays. Hourly winery tours, cooking classes, wine dinners, wine boot camp and wine pairings all enhance the Chateau Chantal experience. From whites and reds to bubbly, fruit wines, cider and port, the varietals make it difficult to choose a single wine to take home. CHATEAUCHANTAL.COM BOWERS HARBOR VINEYARDS is a gem nestled in Bowers Harbor and walkable from the docks. In 1991, the 20-acre winery evolved from a horse farm; the first vineyard was planted just outside what is now the tasting room, which was once the horse stable. The vineyards are divided into Block 1 producing Chardonnay and Riesling, Block 2 with Riesling vines, and Block 3 Gewurztraminer vines. The Langley Vineyard includes: Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. The Erica Vineyard contains Cabernet Franc, Pinot Grigio vines. The tasting room has expanded into a longer tasting bar, wine rack and gift/wine shop. Well-behaved canine friends are welcome to enjoy the outdoor spaces as you sip wine. From Brix sparkling wine, Chardonnay RLS Reserve to 2017 Pinot Grigio, Bowers Harbor will titillate the taste buds. BOWERSHARBOR.COM 2 LADS VINEYARDS & WINERY offers an East Grand Traverse Bay sunrise vista from its tasting bar. Specializing in red and sparkling wines, 2 Lads oversees 23 acres of established vines that were developed into three separate areas progressively: In 1999, 2001 and 2009. Boasting “gravity-flow and gentle-handling” applications, the wine avoids aggressive machine handling that could cause a loss of quality; the futuristic, multi-level, 10,500square-foot facility makes this possible. Of course, 2 Lads has the varietals; Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir Cuvve’e Beatrice, Pinot Grigio, Reserve Chardonnay and 2015 Sparkling Rosé are just a few. 2LWINERY.COM BRYS ESTATE VINEYARD AND WINERY also offers a B&B. The Brys family settled the land in 1890 and transformed the old cherry orchard into a vineyard. The winery’s current 91 acres and 40,000 vines keep all hands on deck. Both the barrel-aging room and the main tasting room defy elegance. A step outside to the deck leads to an expansive East Grand Traverse Bay view with vineyards below. Lunch with wine anyone? A gift shop surrounded by lavender gardens is another beautiful detail on the estate. New this year, the winery allows visitors to tour the estate in a seven-passenger Wine Wagon! Tickets are $45 per person. BRYSESTATE .COM Whether, it’s Mari for its majesty and unique caverns, Brys Estate and Chateau Chantal for their convenient bed and breakfast option, Bowers Harbor for its charm and harbor location or 2 Lads sweeping East Grand Traverse vista, all produce notable wines. These selections, combined with other Old Mission and Grand Traverse region wineries, can expand your wine cellar. Here, it's all about the winery ambience, well-produced wines, tours and a slice of paradise called Old Mission Peninsula. ★

ur central river journey continues through the most remote section of the trip, the Tennessee-Tombigbee (Tenn-Tom) Waterway, which connects the Tennessee and Tombigbee Rivers. Proposed in the late 1700s as a way of improving commercial traffic flow, the project wasn’t started until almost 200 years later in 1972 and completed in 1985. While it’s relatively unknown among the general public, this mammoth undertaking moved more earth than the construction of the entire Panama Canal. Today, the route is favored by recreational vessels because it cuts as many as 720 miles off the Great Loop trip and has less commercial traffic and less current than Armory Lock

the Mississippi River. A total of 10 locks drop vessels about 350 feet. We have found lockmasters to be an accommodating lot; at Jamie Whitten Lock, we were delayed for 50 minutes while the lockmaster waited for two lagging pleasure boats, Imagine 2 and Crazy Enuf, to catch up for a lock-through. But locks always give priority to commercial vessels, and at the Rankin Lock nine miles farther, we waited an hour for lockage as the pusher tug Alex Piehet and its barges went through. Once you begin locking on the TennTom, Midway Marina is the first of five marinas on the waterway. Here you can fill up with gas or diesel, dock and borrow a courtesy car for a side trip to Elvis’ birthplace in Tupelo, Mississippi, or Graceland, his home in Memphis. Most locks on the central rivers do not allow cruisers to tie up to lock walls, but often there are anchorages adjacent to or near them. We found a nice one just above Fulton Lock. The next morning, the lock did an unusual turn-around mid-locking, going down half way, then back up to pick up Imagine 2. Without that reversal, Imagine 2 would have had a multi-hour wait as the north-bound tow Mr. David transited that lock. By the way, it’s not uncommon to see the same recreational and commercial vessels along the rivers, as we passed — or are passed — by them in a hopscotch manner. The next marina is 15 miles south of Fulton Lock, right before Glover Wilkins Lock and Dam at Smithville. Under new ownership, Smithville Marina is in the midst of a renovation, with new pumpout and fuel tanks for gas and diesel. Transients

dock alongside a 180-foot dock. About a mile away, you can get good food at Mel’s Diner before you cast off and head for Amory Lock. We passed by the next marina, Columbus Marina, located in a protected harbor with a well-marked channel. This is a good place to provision and explore, as the marina provides guests with a courtesy car. While there are many inviting anchorages along the Tenn-Tom, beware; some are deep enough and others are not, depending on pool height (controlled depth of water between locks). We have more than once bumped while entering an indicated anchorage; if that happens, exit right away, as the pool height may change before morning — and not for the better. That night, we shared a deep-enough anchorage with My Inspiration, a sailing cat, just north of the Tom Bevill Lock. If you have time, the adjacent Tom Bevill Snagboat Museum is worth a visit; it showcases the last steam-powered sternwheeler, the Montgomery, which was used to remove “snags” (stumps, trees and other obstructions) from seven area rivers.

Onto the Black Warrior

Passing the white cliffs of Epes, Alabama, the unusual shoreline reminded us of pictures we’ve seen of similar cliffs in Dover. Anchoring 25 miles south in Rattlesnake Bend, we marked our last night on the Tenn-Tom Waterway. The next day we would begin the Black Warrior–Tombigbee Waterway, with a sojourn in Demopolis. Demopolis is a must-stop on the river trip; it’s steeped in river history and has an excellent facility for boaters, Kingfisher Bay

Marina. The adjacent fueling facility can be counted on for clean fuel, as it goes through 500,000 gallons of diesel each month, mostly refueling tugs. We enjoy touring historic antebellum houses here, visiting Bluff Hall last time. This trip, it was Gaineswood, a national historic landmark. Built in 1843, its humble beginnings were as a “dogtrot” cabin — where dogs were allowed to take a shortcut straight through the tiny cabin — which grew to include the mansion, an artificial lake and summerhouse pavilion. The main house combines Ionic, Corinthian, Doric and Greek Revival styles, and features elaborate interior rooms with domed ceilings. Original owner and designer Nathan Bryan Whitfield funded the construction with a successful cotton plantation and named the place Gaineswood in honor of George Strother Gaines, a state and local hero of that time. Now owned by the Alabama Historical Commission, the mansion was restored and opened to the public in 1975. The descendants of the original owners generously donated the original antebellum furniture and accessories, completing this living history of Gaineswood. Demopolis is a good spot for provisioning, with the complimentary courtesy car provided by the marina. The downtown features a charming town square, though struggles to find shops to fill the storefronts. One bright spot is the Mustard Seed, a well-stocked gift shop with local and regional specialties, where we picked up an interesting bourbon and bacon cookbook. Later, we stopped by the Red Barn for the local specialty: Fried catfish straight from the river.

Demopolis to the Mobile River

Departing Demopolis, we encounter another accommodating lock tender who waits patiently for Monarch and three more boats to make the transit. Weather conditions vary widely on the rivers; when we entered the lock, the air was clear with good visibility; dropping the lock’s 40 feet brought us out into pea soup fog. On the rivers, it’s a good idea to have radar and AIS (Automatic Identification System). The latter will provide you with a chart-located symbol of any vessels near you that have an installed system, and

include the name, size, bearing and speed of the vessel. This allowed us to “see around corners” or bends in the river, and to be able to hail other vessels with our position and intentions. With commercial traffic, this is especially important; before we were within sight, we have had tug captains advise us to “hang back” while they navigate a particularly tricky, tight bend. As evidence of mishaps, we passed a coal barge firmly grounded on the bank; a tug obviously lost control of its tow and the barge slammed into the bank. This stretch of the river is sparsely populated with just a few anchorages, and many boats make a beeline for Bobby’s Fish Camp, the only “marina” on the 216 miles between Demopolis and Mobile. Vessels tie alongside the rickety 100-foot face dock, which is first come, first served. Rafting almost always is the order of the day, with proprietors indicating that as many as 27 boats have rafted at once. We had a

relatively slow night, with rafting only three deep. Once again, the restaurant had the local specialty, fried catfish with hush puppies, served family style. We saved room for homemade carrot cake. As Monarch had rafted on the outside, we were away early the next morning to transit the last lock on the central rivers trip, Coffeeville Lock. Our neighbors from Bobby’s followed us into the chamber, where we were lowered about 30 feet to near sea level. Shortly after, we passed the junction of the Alabama and Tombigbee Rivers, where the waterway becomes the Mobile River. Because of the distance between Bobby’s and Mobile, most boaters will need to pick an anchorage during this stretch. We selected the Tensas (pronounced locally as ten-saw, like Arkansas is pronounced ar-kan-saw) Cut Off’s Big Briar Creek anchorage, but were delayed by the CSX Rail Road Swing Bridge, which decided

to close for a very long train just as we approached. This made our hook-down time after sunset in the dark, but still safely set after a 96.7-nautical-mile day.

From Mobile onward

Despite only 24 miles to go on our last day of the river trip, we pulled anchor early to head for Mobile. We caught our first glimpse of the skyline; shortly after we passed the point where the waterway officially ends, as Government Street passes under the Mobile River through a tunnel. The river here is bustling with ocean-going freighters that require tug assistance for docking and navy ships, including a weird-looking “fast attack ship.” The shore is decidedly commercial, with dry docking facilities to refit huge ships. So, as most recreational boaters do, we head for Mobile Bay’s west shore where we find Dog River. This full-service boatyard offers transient dockage, a courtesy car, first night

dockage free with a gas or diesel fill-up, and even sports a West Marine Express on site. Other marinas in the vicinity include Turner Marine Supply with dockage to 100 feet, repairs, but no fuel, and Grand Mariner Marina has transient dockage to 150 feet, diesel and gas. For a good local meal, head across the road from Dog River to Mobile Yacht Club for its yummy Shrimp Creole; they offer reciprocity to Dog River customers. Just a short distance from Dog River is one of Mobile Bay’s top attractions,

Dauphin Island Audubon Bird Sanctuary, an important stopover for bird migration and a site of Civil War-era Fort Gaines. Here you can pick up a ferry to Pleasure Island, home of yet another piece of military history, Fort Morgan. Some of the finest beaches on the Gulf are in this area. Though we longed to spend more time here, we had other places to explore as we head to the Florida Keys, warmed by wonderful memories of our third river trip through America’s heartland. ★ LAKELANDBOATING.COM

idway up the western coast of Michigan, tucked in the Pere Marquette State Forest between Silver Lake and Ludington, the village of Pentwater is the perfect place to spend the day, the week, or the entire summer. The serenity and natural beauty of this coastal village is on full display, and its easy-going atmosphere invites one to slow down and take a deep breath — to sit a spell. This historic port city knows how to roll out the summer welcome mat, with a fabulous shoreline, warm sand and plenty of activities for all ages. Beyond the beaches and the waters, Pentwater is also known for its vibrant music and art scenes, with jazzy tunes and creative works often heard and seen throughout the week by those exploring the village. With access to Lake Michigan and the quiet harbor in Pentwater Lake, (originally Middlesex and later renamed Pentwater from “pent up waters”), the village was founded in 1867 by Charles Mears to ship lumber. Back in the day, the channel to the 500-acre Pentwater Lake was notoriously shallow, restricting access for many larger boats. Over the years the village (and channel depth) grew, notably as manufacturing, food processing and fishing centers flourished. Once the railroad steamed into town, Pentwater became a popular destination for families to meet and play. Today, it’s a premier destination for those traveling along the shores of Lake Michigan. The village is walkable to the shoreline, campgrounds, marinas and Village Square, making it the perfect day trip for those looking to kick back and relax, with plenty of family-friendly activities, shopping and eateries nearby.

Downtown shopping

Finding Pentwater by water is easy; the striped blue and white North Pierhead Light marks the gateway at one end of the beach. Situated near both the channel and village, Charles Mears State Park is the crown jewel of the area, with views of Lake Michigan and its turquoise waters. The Old Baldy sand dune anchors the space at the back of the park, with plenty of sand and shoreline for outdoor enthusiasts and watersports to take center stage. Activities at the park include beach volleyball, live concerts and, of course, breathtaking sunsets that set the sky aflame. The Village of Pentwater is nestled between the park and the protected shoreline of Pentwater Lake, offering the best of both worlds. During the day, the Lake Michigan shoreline is dotted with anchored boats. If you plan to stay awhile, Snug Harbor Marina is a great place to dock with complete dockage and storage facilities in a spectacular setting. Heading into his 40th season, Snug Harbor Marina Owner Jack Witt, along with his sons, Jon and Andrew, consistently receive five-star recognition for the help they provide boaters. “[Boaters] are always surprised at the amount of help we give those who are docking,” Jack says. “We help handle lines, place fenders, lend shore power cords — whatever they need!” Snug Harbor Marina is a member of America’s Great Loop Cruisers Association, with 54 slips for boats 20 to 75 feet in length. This past year, the Witts added 12,000 square feet of indoor heated storage space, adding to its existing 18,000-square-foot indoor cold storage. Not only LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Parties in Pentwater often take place at The Village Green. It is the heart of town, with concerts hosted in the vintage bandshell, festivals and farmers markets galore. The “Pickin in Pentwater” event on Tuesdays is a must-attend for those with musical gifts — or for those who enjoy listening to music outdoors with a cool drink in hand. Many local restaurants also host live music during the week; Gull Landing is one of several (also check out Cottage Garden and Village Cafe & Pub) to dine like a local. Known for casual dining, Gull Landing is located downtown across from both the Municipal Marina and Snug Harbor Marina. Owner Diana Russell is a long-time resident who purchased the restaurant from her parents, who had started it 23 years ago as a hot dog stand. “Our deck is the largest outdoor bar in West Michigan,” Russell says. “Our Tiki Bar hosts the Bloody Mary Bar and Breakfast Buffet on the weekends with a great view of Pentwater Lake.”

is the marina loaded with all the amenities boaters would come to expect (laundry, pet friendly, Wi-Fi, boutique, picnic area, boat repair, storage and fuel), it also adds to the picturesque charm found along this waterfront. “There is nowhere else I’d rather work than Pentwater,” Jack says. “It is a small, quaint harbor town with a pristine beach within walking distance to the marinas, and free of large commercial enterprises. It truly is the last unadulterated jewel on the east coast of Lake Michigan.” Jack also points out the village's walkability: “For boaters, it's unusual to dock and have everything they need so close by, including restaurants, gift shops and a grocery store. It’s very convenient.” Pentwater Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Eva Gregwer explains that the accessibility is one of the things that people love about Pentwater. “Everything is close — no car needed,” she says. Wonderfully detailed Victorian and well-tended clapboard homes have survived from the early days, while tree-lined streets provide shady respite. There is a timelessness that invites taking a break mid-afternoon with a good book, especially for those who are staying in one of the stately bed and breakfasts. For those who prefer to shop during their free time, Hancock Street is the place to start. For those arriving by boat, there is a drop-off dock downtown at the end of 3rd Street, just steps to the shops.

Gull Landing is also well-known for its live music on Wednesday and Sunday evenings; it’s a stop on the jazz musician circuit, including the Grammy-winning Paul Nelson Band. “I’ve had folks bring me thank you gifts when we open the deck, so they can get their mojitos and listen to jazz while they eat fresh walleye and perch,” Russell says. Art and water often go hand in hand, and that is very true in Pentwater. The art presence sizzles throughout summer, with a steady celebration of artists and their work (often for sale). The Pentwater Artisan Learning Center is a hub, surrounded by a steady assortment of artists — both local and visiting — who come to create, share, mentor and sell. There is also an active arts council that hosts an art walk Thursday evenings. After attending the annual Fine Arts & Crafts Fair years ago (this year taking place July 14), artist Jilly Barnes relocated to Pentwater and opened Jilly’s Gallery downtown. “I was inspired by the beautiful scenery of this area and the art scene that was developing here,” Barnes says. “People who come here want to take home something to remember their time, and if it is something crafted locally that’s even better.” Meeting the artist and learning the story behind the art is also something both visitors and the artists enjoy, according to Barnes: “People instill in their kids a love for art; they like to make a connection while I do sidewalk chalk in front of the gallery. Add in the music that is often playing around town, and it’s just very cool.” Another popular artist meet-and-greet is the Gallery Stroll held the last Saturday evening of each month, with demonstrations, music, refreshments and great art for sale.

Take part in the festivities

All season long this village hums with various activities (see “Favorite Festivals” sidebar), including the Pentwater Bike & Trike Rally, Spring Fest Arts & Crafts Fair, Venetian Illuminated Boat Parade at the Pentwater Yacht Club, the Blooming Arts Garden Walk and Oktoberfest; however, the Fourth of July Celebration is very special. Russell says that for a small town, Pentwater throws a heck of a celebration. “There is an hour-long parade that is really corny, but everyone loves it,”

Russell says. Flags line the streets, high schools bands play patriotic music, and kids cheer as candy is thrown out by those marching by. “There is a great beer tent, music all day long and terrific fireworks. Pentwater, especially during these festivities, is the best of both worlds — tons of small town charm but in a resort setting with lots of amenities.” Pentwater Chamber of Commerce’s Gregwer says that there is also one event in August dog lovers won’t want to miss. Shake, Wag’n Roll presented by L.A.S.S.I (Local Animal Shelter Support Inc) starts with a morning pet stroll through town and on the beach, and then moves on to pet tricks, performances and agility training. There are also vendors and a silent auction, and all proceeds are used to benefit the shelters. “Throughout the day people and their dogs are encouraged to join in,” Gregwer says. “The costume contest is very popular.” The largest festival of the summer will be the 88th Annual Homecoming Celebration, also taking place in August. This village that normally sees between 7,000 to 10,000 visitors during the summer months swells to around 12,000, all there to “come home.” This is one of the best hometown celebrations found in the Midwest, and with the theme “Taste of Pentwater” it is truly a taste of small town America. “Of course we have folks who return year-after-year for this event, but those who are just visiting for the first time will find it very welcoming,” Gregwer explains. “In this town, everyone is very friendly, and before people know it they’ve made friends here.” The list of activities runs from a teen dance and sand sculpting competition to a preseason tailgate party (be sure to wear your school colors), live concerts, horseshoe competitions and fireworks. Most activities are free to the public. “Some people come for the day and end up retiring here years later,” Gregwer says. For those who enjoy a bit more laid back experience, events later in the season include the Wooden Boat Show in August, the Fall Festival in September and Oktoberfest. Often the waters are still warm but the crowds are a bit smaller. For many, this is their favorite time to be here, and those who drop anchor still have plenty of things to do and beauty to see. Fishing, biking the nearby trails and walking the Pentwater Wonders of the Lake are all activities that don’t require the summer sun. Come by boat and stay awhile in this charming West Michigan village. ★

omeowners Frank and Jean Popoff were drawn to the Lake Charlevoix area back in the 1980s after experiencing the exceptional sailing on this Michigan lake. But when their family started growing and the couple retired, the Popoffs decided it was time to move to a larger home. The gated Oyster Pointe Association was the perfect fit. Not only did the six-bedroom, six-bathroom home provide enough space for their growing family to visit, they also had access to wonderful association amenities. “We really love the association we’re in; it has a swimming pool, tennis courts, trails, a private marina and a basketball court where my grandchild embarrasses me on occasion,” Frank says with a laugh. As I spoke with the Popoffs over the phone, they remark: “Today is just a beautiful day; the sun’s out and the lake is flat.” Nestled on the protected shore of Oyster Bay, this Hampton-style home boasts a wraparound front porch overlooking the water, an open main floor layout offering the perfect amount of space for entertaining and a finished walkout basement.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Prepare hors d’oeuvre while family and friends mingle in the chef’s kitchen. Compete in a friendly game of pool in the billiards room. Take a break in the sauna. Or read a book in the sun room, which Jean says is her favorite space. Frank had a hard time deciding on his favorite aspect of the house, but mentions: “The fellow who built this place really had a flair for music and I’ve continued to upgrade his [audio] system. I like to sit and listen to music on the outside porch in front of the house.” The master suite is on the main floor, and three guest bedrooms are on the upper level. And if that’s not enough space, overnight guests can relax in the 500-square-foot private oasis above the three-stall garage, complete with a bedroom, kitchen and living room. The private association beach is the perfect place to soak up the sun. And if you’re ready to set sail, walk down to the 40-foot boat slip in the association marina. “The marina is the selling point,” Jean says. “That’s what really sold us: The services and facilities, with family and friends in mind.” ★

estled conveniently between the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico, Aqua Yacht Harbor on Pickwick Lake, on the Tennessee-Mississippi border, is an ideal destination in any season. Because the lake never freezes, northern boaters can keep their boat in one of the 130 dry storage spaces and 500 in-water (covered and uncovered) slips in any season. Plus, the marina’s location makes a great destination for southern Gulf boaters looking for an escape from hurricane season. “Our climate is in an area where you can boat 12 months out of the year,” says General Manager Rodney Vanhoose. “There are a few cold snaps in January and February, like there is everywhere, but we’re open seven days a week, 12 months a year.” Pickwick Lake is not landlocked, stretching from the Pickwick Landing Dam in Tennessee and the northern end of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway to the Wilson Dam in Alabama, making it easily accessible from all directions. Aqua Yacht Harbor was completely renovated in 1986,

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

and in 2015, Safe Harbor added the harbor to its collection of 70 marinas in 18 states. Vanhoose has been with the harbor since 1992 and has seen it grow into a destination for every kind of boater. “A lot of Great Loop cruisers come here while making the loop,” he says. “You can go anywhere you want and then return home; you can take trips to Knoxville, to Nashville, or go down to the Gulf and come back. Between the service repair facility, all the amenities and the way we keep the grounds and landscape, people want to be here.” The facility features a full-service marine repair shop, fuel, a 40- and 70-ton travel lift, a pool, tennis courts, pump-out, an exercise facility, courtesy vans for transient guests and fun events for boaters. With all of the services and amenities available, Vanhoose says that a trip to Aqua Yacht Harbor is where boaters “have everything they could want [so] they don’t have to deal with the stress of everyday life. We want to make it where it is a vacation.” ★

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

The 1969 47-foot Pacemaker motoryacht Judy Ann is named after my wife. I purchased the boat in 1983 as the third owner. She is used on the Saginaw River and Saginaw Bay, during annual trips to the Straits of Mackinac to visit Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island, along with many ports along the way. After having engine problems in 1999, I repowered Judy Ann with 7.4 MPI MerCruiser engines. Judy Ann is painted yellow with a white feature stripe and white superstructure. The yellow color scheme has a long history; when I bought my first boat in 1956 — a 15-foot Lyman with a 30-hp Evinrude — my mother insisted I paint the boat in a bright color so that if I got lost on Saginaw Bay it might be easier to spot. The yellow tradition has carried on through the years with all my boats. As the former owner of Pier 7 Marina in Bay City, Michigan, I have kept the boat professionally maintained to original condition. —Chuck Frantz, Bay City, MI
