process, Lakehead-Georgian really stuck out to me from the rest of the programs I applied to. I felt like it was going to provide me with many options to choose from when I graduate because not only will I be getting an HBSc but I will also be receiving a Biotechnology-Health diploma. Having the opportunity to receive both of these qualifications at the same time would greatly benefit my future. Additionally, I really liked the idea of having the opportunity to take both college and university courses; with this program you definitely get hands-on experience from the college side of things, while also having the opportunity to have more theory-based classes from the university side.

Hometown: Gorrie, Ont.

Current employer: Innovative Automation, Barrie, Ont.

I’m currently working at a company called Innovative Automation. They specialize in designing and building automated machinery, specifically for the medical and automotive fields. I’m working as a controls programmer, where my tasks include programming robots, PLC’s (programmable logic controllers), databases, HMI’s (human machine interfaces) and many other devices.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) Degree program offered through the Lakehead-Georgian Partnership is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB).

I chose Lakehead-Georgian mainly for how unique this program is, as being able to graduate with both a degree and a diploma in electrical engineering in four years is a very powerful combination. When I was in high school and looking at programs to apply for, there was no other program like this for engineering, and the idea of having both a degree and a diploma really stood out to me, as it will set you aside from other graduates. It is so valuable to be able to go to an employer and say that you not only understand the theory about how things work, but you also understand how things work practically, and you have both a degree and a diploma to prove that.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Take advantage of the vast forests and conservation land in the area while you study eco-systems, water quality and invasive species in what we call our natural laboratory. During field school placements, you will explore the region before stepping foot in the classroom to collect field samples and data for lab work during the year.

Georgian was the integrated program, which allows me to get both a diploma and a degree in just four years. I have always been deeply passionate about the environment and this program's diverse and extensive courses greatly appealed to me.

Personally, I have been fortunate to spend almost every day this summer in the labs, thanks to my work-study position as a research assistant. Spending time in the labs has been an absolute joy for me. I’ve been able to engage in hands-on research and gain valuable practical experience, complementing the theoretical knowledge gained in class. The labs have truly become a second home where I can delve deeper into my passion for environmental sustainability and make a real difference in the field.
