GEOLOGY

Honours Bachelor of Science (HBSc); Honours Bachelor of Environmental Science (HBESc); Major:

Geology, Earth Science; Minor; Concurrent Education: Primary/Junior, Intermediate/Senior Geology is the study of the Earth and the planets around us. In addition to the bedrock and loose sediment that covers it, you will investigate our planet’s atmosphere and hydrosphere, its history and life. Examine modern processes as they are occurring on the surface and in the interior of the Earth, volcanic and earthquake hazards and the formation of ore deposits. Fieldwork is an important component of geology, which means you will participate in two field schools during your program. Given our location on the Canadian Shield, some of the most amazing geology in the world is within a few minutes’ drive of Thunder Bay. Unique Learning Opportunities: Our location amidst the Canadian Shield functions as an outdoor lab and classroom. Our faculty regularly holds classes outside and organizes field trips and extended field schools to take advantage of the superior environment and give you practical training that is highly valued by the industry from day one. Career Paths: Exploration Geologist, Environmental Geoscientist, Economic Geologist, Geochemist, Geophysicist, Mineralogist, Palaeontologist, Seismologist, Volcanologist Advanced Studies: Master of Science (MSc) in Geology Sample Courses: Planet Earth; Mineralogy; Geochemistry; Field Mapping; The Earth and Life Through Time; Glacial Systems; Metamorphism; Tectonics; Soil Science; Igneous Petrology

INDIGENOUS STEM ACCESS PROGRAM

Indigenous STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Access Program is an eight-month, full time program designed for Indigenous people who wish to attend university but do not meet the admission requirements. You will develop your academic skills and knowledge in a culturally-sensitive and friendly environment while taking courses in English, Math, Chemistry, Academic Skills, as well as electives of your choice. Upon successful completion of this program, you may pursue an undergraduate degree in many of the Science programs at Lakehead University.
