PHYSICS

Honours Bachelor of Science (HBSc);
Double Major: Physics and: Mathematics; Major: Mathematical Physics, Physics; Concentration: Biomedical Physics; Concurrent Education: Primary/ Junior, Intermediate/Senior Physics is crucial to understanding the world around us, the world inside us, and the world beyond us. It is the most basic and fundamental natural science. Through both experiment and theory, you will attempt to uncover the laws of nature at the deepest level. Whether it is imaging galaxies or imaging tumors, looking at the quantum world or protein dynamics, physics is the key to unlocking the universe. You will be exposed to cutting-edge knowledge in a variety of fields in physics including quantum mechanics, lasers and optical physics, nanotechnology, materials science, medical imaging and mathematical physics to equip you well with the knowledge and technical skills needed for success. In your senior years, you will have the opportunity to do advanced research in Mathematical Physics, Biomedical Physics, Medical Imaging, Nanostructured Surfaces, and Fibre Optics. Unique Learning Opportunities: Lakehead is a partner institution with Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute providing you with access to state-of-the-art biomedical imaging devices such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and a facility for medical imaging detector development and testing (including a clean room for material fabrication). These facilities are part of specialized biomedical physics courses, as well as part of the PhysicsThunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute’s summer school in medical imaging. Career Paths: Physicist, Biophysicist, Astronomer, Medical Physicist, Meteorologist, Geophysicist, Research Scientist, Data Analyst, IT Professional, Optical Technician, Biomedical Engineer, Atmospheric Scientist, Radiologist Advanced Studies: Master of Science (MSc); PhD in Biotechnology; PhD in Chemistry & Material Sciences Sample Courses: Modern Physics; Thermodynamics; Electricity and Magnetism; Optics; Observational Astronomy; Quantum Mechanics; Fibre Optic Communications; Relativity; Nuclear Physics; Introduction to Medical Physics; Meteorology.

Specialization: Applied Environmental Water Management Water quality and adequate supplies of fresh water are important issues in Canada and the rest of the world. With increasing population growth and climate change, sustainable management of this limited and vital resource is at the forefront of science and policy. Gain the skills and knowledge required to tackle complex problems related to sustaining and improving water quality to meet the many growing demands on this precious resource. Unique Learning Opportunities: Lakehead offers a unique undergraduate program in Canada specializing in Water Resources. We also offer an applied program in partnership with Confederation College, in which students graduate with a degree and diploma in four years. Located on the shore of the largest freshwater lake in the world, Thunder Bay offers an unparalleled location to learn about water and enables us to deliver field-based experiential learning opportunities. Career Paths: Hydrologist, Environmental Technician, Hydrological Engineer, Watershed Manager, Environmental Consultant, Environmental Programs Manager, Geomatics, Fisheries, Limnology, Public Works Manager Advanced Studies: Master of Science (MSc) in Biology; Master of Environmental Studies (MES); Master of Science (MSc) in Geology Sample Courses: Environmental Field School; Limnology; Biology of Fishes; Groundwater; Environmental Biology; Geomatics and GIS; Geomorphology; Resource Management and Sustainability; Glacial Systems; Depositional Environments; Soil Sciences; Fluvial Geomorphology; Remote Sensing
